Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. While they will love a leisurely walk around the block, they will also need something a little bit more intensive to really get their blood flowing. Even just throwing a ball around in the backyard so the dog can get some sprints in will be enough to help get some of that excess energy out. A typical recommendation is for a Goberian to get at least an hour of exercise every day, if not more. Instead, a couple of half-hour sessions will be good as well! Just a Goberian doing some exercise. Remember that grooming does not necessarily mean shaving, even though it may seem tempting, thanks to all their shedding! However, shaving a double coated dog can actually make shedding worse. In fact, a Goberian should never be shaved except in cases of medical necessity. Both the Siberian Husky and the Golden are double-coated, meaning that their coat has two layers. One that is a bit more coarse and thick on the outside, and the inner layer, which is more soft and downy. Having a double coat actually provides protection from sun damage as well as protection from extreme cold and heat. Shaving makes it more difficult for double-coated dogs to regulate their body temperature, and it can cause the fur to grow back coarse and even somewhat sharp to the touch. That aside, grooming for a Goberian will entail taking the pup to the groomer to get a bath and a good brush out. Or you can do it at home! Groomers will often be able to use an awesome deshedding shampoo and conditioner, which helps reduce shedding in the long run! He has more pronounced husky physical characteristics, but with a softer looking face and ears that go up and down depending on his mood. Kona, meanwhile, has a coat style that is similar to a Golden Retriever with a long flowing coat, with colors such as black, cream and white. Wag suggest that Goberians will usually have a rounded head in proportion to his body and ears that hang down, while his body will typically resemble that of a Golden Retriever but his legs and tail will appear more like that of a Husky. For instance, some Goberians may show the openness of a Golden Retriever but the high prey drive of a Siberian Husky. Goberians tend to be social dogs that like to be around people, especially members of their family. Really a perfect mix of Goldens and Huskies. He has piercing blue eyes, a long curly tail, black and white coat, and thick tough paws. It is only when I see him standing next to a Golden that I realize the similarity in body type. Also, he is always smiling and has floppy ears, which he certainly gets from his golden half. Hudson has to be near humans at all time and loves to shove a tennis ball in your lap until you submit to play fetch. He is a social chameleon though. When playing with a Husky, he adapts to their mouthy neck biting play style, and with goldens he flops around on the ground and lays belly up! Sully I have to lean quite heavily towards the Husky side for Sully. Kona konathegoldenhusky highlighted a stubborn streak that is something often attributed to the Husky breed. I think most of the time we see a pretty even mix between the two breeds, but at times she might show more Golden traits. She is a very social, gentle, and affectionate dog and will always seek out attention from anybody around, which probably comes from the Golden Retriever side of her. This probably comes from her Husky side. We can take a look at how our three Goberian dog owners tire their dogs out. High [exercise needs] … very high. He is the mix of two very active breeds and requires roughly miles per day. Thankfully, he is a very social dog and can get a large amount of his energy out at the dog park. In addition, he loves to be offleash in Central Park. His recall is temperamental. He displays the husky stubbornness every now and then. We are able to stick to a good, regular routine with his exercise fortunately as his dad loves outdoor time. Unsurprisingly he enjoys 7 — 9 miles over 3 walks on an average day, more at weekends if we head out to countryside, though I think he would be fine with less. No looking back! We try to take her, at the very minimum, on a walk every day. We love taking her outdoors on hikes, trips to the beach, and playdates with other dogs. These activities are crucial to her health and well-being. Do Goberian Shed A Lot? However, each Goberian will have different levels of shedding, something which is emphasised by our Goberian contributors. Surprisingly, he sheds far less that his purebred parents. Their coat is thick but feels more similar to a long haired lab. It is waterproof and dries quickly. Affectionately known as Goberian Glitter. Yes and no. For these two to three months of the year the shedding is a mess and covers everything in sight with her white undercoat fur. However, for the rest of the year she has very little to no shedding at all. Overall, the shedding is very manageable if we stay on top of it. Do Goberian Rerquire Grooming? By sticking to a grooming regime, you can regularly remove dead hair from their coat. We do use a professional groomer every 8 weeks, but more to check nails and hygiene trim. Are Goberian Hard To Train? Siberian Huskies can be a little trickier. With an independent streak, some Siberian Huskies can prove difficult to train. Goberians are likely to be smart dogs but they could also inherit this stubborn streak from their Husky parent. They are extremely intelligent. Not hard to teach them commands, however they are not extremely food motivated and tend to be a bit stubborn. If you find toys or balls to get his interest, you are in the clear. The largest challenge has been walk training. They are truly built to pull, so it takes some time to teach them how to walk side by side as companions. He is smart. Super smart. And equally as stubborn! Teaching all the early basics was straight forward and he was potty trained in the first week at home. I think with the right training method and lots of patience you could teach them almost anything. Kona konathegoldenhusky required time to adapt to potty training. It was actually pretty easy! She is an extremely smart dog so she was able to quickly pick up on most things. Kona is also very food-motivated, which definitely made the training easier. I think the hardest part of her training was the potty training. Golden Retrievers are perhaps the quintessential family dog thanks to their goofy but loving personalities. Siberian Huskies are active dogs that like to be around their owners. Therefore, Goberians are perfectly-suited to active, young families. Extremely [family friendly]. Loves children and babies and is very delicate. He once passed a toddler and made sure to give them a gentle kiss on the face as he passed by. As with all breeds early introduction and setting boundaries plays a major part and he now sees everyone as a potential playmate, probably a bit too trusting at times! Kona is a very loving and social dog, but is also extremely loyal and protective. I think the Golden Husky breed combines excellent traits from both breeds that can lead to a great family dog. Some of the symptoms of separation anxiety include barking, howling, whining, chewing, digging or even defecating inside the home. We have a doggy cam and he now just snoozes. He allows us to willingly leave him at groomers etc without fuss so his anxiety levels appear low as he trusts us to come back. Are Goberian Fussy Eaters? Sully developed fussy eating habits from around 7 months old, around the same time he realised he could manipulate us with a bit of strong will as his preference was, and will probably always remain, bits of human food. More often than not a treat will just bounce off his head or he spits them out! So you may find it hard to unearth a Goberian breeder. Alternatively, you may find a Golden Retriever Siberian Husky mix at your local rescue shelter. Having said that, here is some advice from our dog owners for anyone looking to get a Goberian of their own! They are a newer breed and there tend to be a lot of variation from looks, temperament and size. Either way- they are the mix of two tremendous breeds and regardless of how the genes shake out — you will have yourself one of the best companions you could find. Do your research on how the breed would fit into your family and lifestyle and engage with other owners if you can. Most likely you will need to go on a waitlist and be super patient. Their last week together will consist of plenty of socialization and playing. Most breeders will arrange a 7 week health check up with the vet to make sure your bundle of fluff is fit and healthy to go to their new home. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. This is great time for you to introduce them to the big wide world and develop their social skills which you have already been building the foundations. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can.
