All our dogs reside in our home, with no kennels. Our Tramin dogs have wonderful temperaments, and beautiful conformations, and are genetically clear and physically sound. They are all hip and elbow tested. They are big-boned and have blocky heads. Most of our dogs are European Champions. We have found that the Tramin line is healthier and lives longer. We genetically guarantee our pet puppies for 2 years and our breeders for 4 years. I have worked for vets in Kokomo and Muncie. I have shown dogs over the years as well as taught dog obedience. We breed only genetically and physically sound retrievers. Our goal is to improve the Golden Retriever breed. Our Golden Retriever puppies are wormed every 2 weeks, vet checked, started on housebreaking and given appropriate vaccines before leaving for their new homes. We can deliver for 50 cents a mile one way. You are also welcome to come to visit or pick up your puppy. We live 50 miles north of Indianapolis Indiana. You can call or text me at Reach Out About Goldens Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States for good reason. They are intelligent, loyal, easy to train, and very affectionate. They make wonderful family dogs because they are great with young children and other dogs. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized sporting dogs that weigh on average pounds, with females weighing on the lower end of this range. Their height can range from inches tall. They have a broad head, short ears, deep chest, and very muscular build. Retrievers make excellent family dogs due to their wonderful temperament. They are friendly with children and other pets. They do not mind when company comes to visit. Golden Retrievers generally have a great temperament—they are often friendly with children, other pets, and even strangers. They enjoy being the center of attention. Golden Retrievers also love affection and being petted and will nudge you gently so that you continue to pet them. It is very rare for a Golden Retriever to show any sign of aggression. Goldens are very intelligent, which makes them easy to train as puppies. They can also be trained to be therapy dogs, guide dogs for people who are blind, or search-and-rescue dogs. She is believed to be a bloodhound shepherd mix possibly retriever. Sunny was pulled from a local shelter Christmas of after a hoarding abandonment case of 27 plus fearful feral dogs left behind in a property. The home was condemned, disgusting filthy. A home in such condition, no animal or human should have to live in. Sunny and 3 others call the sanctuary home for the time being, all are doing amazing with their rehab, learning what life as a loved pet should be. Sunny struggles to settle in and takes more time then the others. She is the one that stresses easily when meeting new people but with a playful active dog mentoring her she does so much better. She slowly warms up some when it comes to people, still unsure if she wants human affection at first but will always take a treat, moves in for petting, willing to snuggle and even cuddle. Sunny loves all the dogs, is good with cats and small critters too. Sunny has an amazing personality she herself is still learning about who she is. Always best to approach her slow at first. Sunny needs a lot of confidence still, and that requires a lot of patience with no set time frame and expectations ever. Allow her to live life 1 day at a time. Sunny walks amazing on leash, barks very little but barks. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important. Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense.
It was so obvious that this puppy was blue and it was the only one in the litter. It was already sold and so was I. I then met Dawn Malcolm as I was looking for a traditional colored show type stud male. Dawn shared with me that she has a solid blue male and had a strong love for the livers and blues too. That was 12 years ago and our friendship is still very strong. I am glad we joined the Yahoo email group as I met some great people who were as interested in sharing in the goals I have set forth expanding the blue gene pool. With the help of many friends I incorporated various GSD with the blue gene to start my own lines. Over the years all have proven to be a valuable asset not only because of their color but because of their various personalities, health and structure. Some needed physical traits improved, others needed tweaking in the personality department to be what I feel is an ideal companion bred GSD which is what most average families need. She is a blue brindle born here. Many of my others carry the blue gene. Tanzietu - is Tanzies blue fawn daughter, her father is Miner so she carries long coat and can carry liver from her father. She is a puppy and will be included in the program as she matures. How did blue get into the GSD gene pool? The color has been apart of the original gene pool from the start. The puppies born of a blue GSD that are expressing the color blue themselves are born a very striking shade of blue. Shades of blue Blue is a dilution of black. It is lighter than black, and in some cases, it is very apparent that they are still blue as adults. The puppies are born a very pretty shade of blue and many of them turn to almost like a steel gray black as adults. Others are a lighter shade of blue. None the less the gene responsible for blue in the GSD is the D gene. Again, blue is a dilution of black. Therefore blue GSD are unable to produce any black on the dog. Every where traditionally seen black is, is blue with the dog has the D gene. Including the nose leather, eye rims, lips, and paw pads will all be a dark shade of blue and not black. When puppies are young their eyes appear to be very brilliant blue as all puppies are born with blue eyes but they do change over to a light yellow wolf eye or even to an amber orange eye as they mature. Is your GSD blue or carry blue? Feel free to send me a picture of your puppy or dog you feel may be blue. Keep in mind blue is the color, the patterns can be solid, sable, saddle, with and without other patterns panda, brindle, white spotting ect.Do you want to know for sure if your GSD is blue or carries blue? There are several color testing companies out there and we have used a few different companies our selves. The most recent company we have used is Embark. Not only does it test for all colors, it screens for several genetic diseases all in one test. We will be using this on many of our dogs in the next year. Thank you Embark for creating such a valuable tool for breeding. Scroll through the albums and if you do not find what you are looking for please send me a message. Keep in mind you do not have to have a facebook page to see this page. This recessive gene dilutes any black pigment on the dog including coat color, nose leather, foot pads, toe nails, lips, etc. It also affects their eye color. Blue pups have a beautiful light gray coat as babies, as they age however is usually darkens up quite a bit, the ones that darken up are called "steel" blues. To the untrained eye, they can be mistaken for regular blacks. There is also "Powder" blues, they tend to lighten up in color and always stay a very noticeable gray color. Powder blues are not seen very often. A blue pup with sable markings We have a couple blues and a few dogs who carry the blue gene. We choose these dogs first and foremost because their temperament, structure and health aligns with the goals of our breeding program. A beautiful unique color is just icing on the cake of an already exceptional dog. Our non-traditional color lines have some of the highest hip ratings in the US! We have produced non-traditional colored GSDs that compete in obedience, agility, nose work, etc. I personally love the non-traditional colored German Shepherds. These colors are been in the breed since the beginning and our foundation girl Rose just happened to be a blue! When we have sable pups ready to go home, you'll get an email from our team! At Hayes Haus, we believe it's important to consider all pros and cons that could pop up over the course of your dog's life before ever buying a puppy, and even before placing a deposit. That's why we wrote this article about the true cost of German Shepherd puppies. A recommended read no matter which breeder you end up buying your sable German Shepherd puppy from. Does coat color affect GSD puppy costs? Your puppy's color won't affect any part of the dog's price here at Hayes Haus, but many breeders do charge different prices for different coat colors. Be careful of these breeders, as they may be breeding their dogs solely for looks and appearance, rather than focusing on the dog's temperament. It's especially dangerous when suspect breeders are purposely producing blue sable puppies and similar colors with gene mutations. Reference our German Shepherd temperament article for more information on why breeding for temperament over looks is critical if you want to consistently breed good family dogs. Are rare sable German Shepherd colors more expensive? As stated above, whether your puppy is sable, black, red, white, or blue shouldn't matter when it comes to price. But with this being said, many sable German Shepherd breeders do charge more for their rare puppy colors. Health issues with White GSDs are well-documented. But as we mentioned above, there is nothing special about these uncommon coat colors. Keep reading below and we'll explain why.Adult Sable German Shepherds If you're looking for an adult sable GSD, please send us an email [email protected] and we'll keep you on our list. Since we're connected with some many Shepherd breeders across New England and the country, we're sometimes alerted when adult male and females are in need of a home. When this happens and the Shepherd is sable, we'll send you an email! The Science Behind German Shepherd Colors The color of your puppy goes beyond the coat color of their mother and father. It's not that random! In fact, the science behind the various German Shepherd Dog colors is extensive and a must-know for anyone deeply researching the breed. To learn why, read below.According to Max von Stephanitz, the German Shepherd Dog's "pleasing appearance is desirable, but it can not put the dog's working ability into question. It's clear that he didn't want the breed's appearance to come in the way of their working capabilities. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. It's actually a bit surprising that they don't have stricter standards when it comes to German Shepherd colors. They don't note any specific restrictions when it comes to AKC-certified Sable German Shepherds, but the idea of washed-out colors being serious faults suggests they prefer darker sable German Shepherds opposed to lighter sable. According to the SV, the German Shepherd Dog should be categorized by the shade of their coat rather than the pigment 'color. In the case of boxers from a reputable breeder, you will usually pay more than what an owner is charging since these breeders usually have to pay higher licensing and insurance fees as well as build kennels and other facilities that would be suitable for breeding dogs. In addition, reputable breeders will allow you to take the boxer home with a signed contract that prevents them from breeding their dog or selling it to other people. However, there are usually people who breed boxers as a side hobby and will be quite willing to make a deal with you. Although it is not recommended that you buy from these people, they usually give the dog away for free or for a very low price because they are trying to get rid of their dogs. In addition, buying from someone who breeds boxers as a side hobby may be cheaper. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Missouri To find a responsible boxers breeder in Missouri, the best thing to do is consult your veterinarian. Since there are many reputable breeders in this state, asking people who live nearby would be advisable as well. If you cannot ask anyone locally for help, then using the Internet will also allow you to look up lists of accredited dog breeders which may give you some leads on finding reputable breeders. Another important factor to consider if you want to buy a boxer puppy in Missouri is where the dog will live. Although Missouri does not have any requirements for the living conditions of dogs, it is always best to find out how big the kennel or barn will be and what the weather conditions are like in order to make sure that your boxer puppy can adapt to its new environment. Visit Your Missouri Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find boxers for sale in Missouri from a reputable breeder, it is important that you visit their kennel or farm. Although there are many breeders who advertise through the Internet and will ship a boxer puppy to your home, it is always best to buy a dog from a local breeder since they can ensure you good customer service. Visiting your Boxer breeder in person will also give you a chance to see the kind of environment your boxer is living in. This will allow you to determine if their breeding practices help promote good health and temperament as well as how they treat the dogs. It also allows you to connect with the breeder and makes it easier for you both to establish a strong relationship. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Missouri When you are searching for a Missouri boxer breeder, making sure that the boxing breeders in your area are trustworthy is just one of the most important factors to consider. You must know that not all reputable boxer breeders would be aware of how to raise their puppies correctly. References will be of great help in making sure that you will only be dealing with the most reliable boxer breeders in Missouri. For these reasons, asking for references is one of the best ways to ensure that they are professional Missouri boxer breeders. Ask Your Missouri Boxer Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Asking your Missouri boxer breeder to introduce you to their past clients is one of the most effective ways in order to determine if they are professional or not. If possible, you can also ask for referrals at this time. If these references and referrals are promising, then it basically means that they are reliable boxing breeders in Missouri. However, always keep in mind that not all reputable boxing breeders would provide these things right away especially when it comes to the safety of their puppies. Take note that responsible and trustworthy boxers breeders would look out for the welfare of their pets before anything else. This is why you must always make it a point to trust the boxer breeder in Missouri only when they are willing to hand over these things. Does the boxer breeder in Missouri that you are considering working with have a good relationship with their veterinarian? This basically means that they are responsible when it comes to taking care of their pets and not just looking at them as a source of income. You just need to remember that not all reputable boxer dog breeders would be easy to work with. In fact, you should already know this when looking for boxers in Missouri since not everyone has the same standards and expectations. This is one of the most common signs which point out that you might be dealing with an unethical Missouri boxer breeder at this time. They ask for payment during the process of the transaction. Before getting to work with Missouri boxer breeders, they must first know what kind of payment they are looking forward to accepting. If they immediately ask for payment even before doing anything, then this is one discouraging sign that points out that you might be dealing with an unethical boxer breeder at this present time. To them, money comes first and not the welfare of their pets. What good does a verbal agreement do? There are a lot of people who would prefer written contracts since these things hold both sides accountable. This is the kind of question which you should ask your breeder even before anything else. If they keep on telling you that nothing is wrong with them, this is yet another discouraging sign which points out that there might be something wrong with their facilities right now. So make sure to ask this question before agreeing to any contract. Remember that this is not just another pet since they are known to be quite destructive. So if you want them to do this somewhere else, make sure that you give them something which they could use for this purpose like chew toys and bones. But at the same time, it will also depend upon their age. If they are still young, then it might take some time before they would chew on things other than their own toys and bones. Just keep in mind that these pets would eventually grow up one day, and they will start exploring your house. This is the only way for them to learn what kinds of things are appropriate or not. You must never forget about this since this would have a long-term effect on their behavior later on in life. Just be patient when it comes to training them so everything would go according to plan. If these pets go to the bathroom inside your house, then this can lead to a lot of serious problems for both you and them. Remember that training your pet is essential because it helps strengthen your relationship with each other over time. They need enclosure crate training:Crate training works hand-in-hand with potty training which is why you should not forget about this one thing above all else. They would give you some good advice which will help improve the overall relationship that you have with your pet. Just have patience with them since they will eventually learn what you want them to do regardless of how long it may take. Enjoy your brand new Boxer puppy. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. The year-old performer and the talk show host sat down for a game of animal-related trivia during which each correct answer was matched with a Golden Retriever puppy. During the game, Fallon commented that the match was 'not fair. After sweeping his opponent, the Bill and Ted franchise star triumphantly declared: 'I'm the puppy king! At one point a pup put his paw on the movie star's face Before the trivia match started, Reeves and the show's host sat down for an interview with the latter revealed that, after running into the actor at a restaurant and sending him a single olive, he responded with a much grander gesture. Fallon recalled: 'You had the whole restaurant come over and sing me Happy Birthday. And it was not my birthday.I blew out the candle. After showing off a photo featuring the unlikely group, Reeves quipped: 'One of these things does not belong, and it was me. The topic of conversation then turned to John Wick: Chapter Four, and Reeves spoke highly of the creative qualities of the film's director. He really wants to create different kinds of environments or ways in the storytelling for the action,' he stated. The game — which has been played before on the late-night NBC talk show by guests like Jerry Seinfeld, Kaley Cuoco and Salma Hayek — sees the players facing off in animal-inspired trivia. Some might say Reeves has a bit of an edge, since he stars in the John Wick film franchise the first three films are now streaming on Peacock! Reeves stopped by the talk show to promote John Wick: Chapter 4 in which he'll play a part in saving a dog , which hits theaters next week. RELATED: 'John Wick' director says first movie's puppy death was written out of the script several times Tonight Show announcer Steve Higgins hosted the Pup Quiz, explaining that he'd be asking both Reeves and Fallon animal trivia questions, and that if a contestant correctly answers, they'll get a golden retriever puppy, and if they answer incorrectly, their opponent gets a puppy. Whoever has the most puppies at the end of the game wins. Reeves initially said turtle, but then was given a chance to change his answer and correctly guessed lizard, scoring his first pup. Just saying that right now. Fallon went with the first one, but the answer was the last one. The loss earned Reeves his second pup. Is this like a common litter? The actor correctly guessed antelope and won two more pups, for a total of four. One got antsy and ran over to Fallon. He guessed that the reason was to tell other dogs they're happy, but the correct answer was to signal to other pups that they're tall. So Reeves got two more dogs. During the Final Puppardy round, the contestants had the opportunity to take all of their opponent's puppies — even though Fallon hadn't technically won any and was just holding the ones that got away from Reeves. Chaos ensued as the contestants scrambled to scrawl their answers on an iPad as the puppies in their arms escaped. The answer was six, meaning that Reeves correctly guessed every answer except for maybe that first one, when he was given a second chance , and Fallon did not get any. They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! Related Pet Care Articles. Back to Top Labrador Retriever Temperament Cheerful and animated, this large dog breed has stamina and energy to spare, able to keep up with your family and all your activities. And thanks to their high intelligence, learning commands and tricks come relativity easy for them. Labrador dogs love having a job to do and excel at things like agility courses and, just like their name implies, retrieving items. In fact, their superior intelligence is why they often make great assistance dogs, working as therapy or service animals. A people-pleaser, Labrador Retrievers have a pleasant personality and love interacting with humans. Get ready to be showered with lots of affection! Slow and controlled introductions to other family pets will help make the transition go smoothly. Addressing any biting issues early on, providing proper socialization when they are puppies aka safely exposing them to lots of new people, places and things and working with a professional dog trainer can help avoid behavioral issues when they get older. Back to Top How to Care for a Labrador Retriever As you might expect with such a popular dog breed, Labs are relatively easy to care for and make great dogs for first-time pet parents. The toughest part about taking care of a Lab will likely be your ability to keep up with them! For more routine maintenance, brush them at least once a week. Consider using a tool like the Furminator to help brush out the undercoat and remove the excess fur. Labs who spend most of their time indoors should be bathed every four to six weeks. You can do this at home or have it done by a professional groomer. For those who get a lot of outdoor time, you should bathe them weekly. Training Labs are eager to please, making them highly trainable. You can begin obedience school with your Labrador puppy between the ages of 7 weeks and 4 months. They can learn the basics such as housebreaking, commands—sit, stay, speak, shake and roll over—and leash skills, such as heel. Labs can be leash-pullers and jumpers. To help train dogs more effectively, choose a headcollar to help prevent pulling and provide more control. A certified professional dog trainer can provide more guidance on correcting the issue. In general, Labs are extremely friendly and do well in most social interactions. As a working dog, they can compete in agility courses, retrieve fish, be excellent guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired, sniff out bombs and drugs, and help law enforcement in search-and-rescue missions. Your veterinarian can help you nail down a feeding chart to guide you on how much and how often to feed your dog based on their specific diet. Because Labs are so active and always on the go, they may benefit from a high-protein dog food. If your pup has digestion issues, you may need to seek out a different dog food formula. While treats are often used in training, be sure to limit the amount you dish out on the daily. An overabundance of treats, even if your pup is super active, is an easy way for them to pack on the pounds. Take them for runs around the neighborhood or at the dog park, in addition to regular walks and hikes at least once a day for an hour is ideal. A great way to burn off their energy is to enroll them in agility course training or let them swim in a pool, lake or ocean if you have those options nearby. Speaking of swimming, Labs absolutely love the water—they were, after all, bred to be waterdogs, retrieving fish and fowl. Lab parents should prioritize water-based outings as often as possible to ensure that their pup gets the precious water time they love. Since Labs are natural swimmers, dock diving makes for a fun exercise that will keep them entertained for hours on end. Ideal Environment Labs want love, affection and attention—and lots of it. Their ideal environment is, unsurprisingly, one where they can be smothered with cuddles, hugs and kisses. These family dogs generally do well with kids and other pets because of their amicable attitude and spirited energy. Having friends over for dinner? Your Lab is likely to steal the show with their cheerfulness. Labs are extremely versatile and tend to flourish in many different environments, from urban to rural. A game of fetch is always a fun option for Retrievers! Reputable breeders often look at lineage to eliminate health problems that can run in bloodlines and be passed from generation to generation. Elbow Dysplasia: When an elbow joint grows abnormally, your pup might experience stiffness in their forelimbs. Their mobility may be affected, and they might deal with some discomfort or pain over time. Treatment will depend on the primary cause of the elbow dysplasia, but in most cases surgery is recommended. Arthritis is common in older Labs because of their large size, which places more strain on their joints with age. There are hip surgeries that can mitigate the effects of hip dysplasia if identified early enough. Allergies: Labs are prone to environmental and food allergies, which can be, at times, rather relentless. Common signs of really bad allergies? Recurring ear and skin infections and chewing at their paws. If your Lab regularly shows these signs, check with your vet for the best way to help keep these reactions at bay. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: Otherwise known as PRA, this describes a number of diseases that can cause degeneration of the lining in the retina, which is in the back of the eye. In some cases, this condition can lead to blindness. But as a deep-chested dog, Labs are more likely to be susceptible to it. In severe cases, the stomach can twist upon itself and result in a condition called gastric dilation volvulus GDV. This is very serious and can be deadly if not treated immediately. Johns Dog or the lesser Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland not Labrador , Canada, and are longtime descendants of the now-extinct St. With their strong hunting heritage, Labradors first became popularized in the early s as a waterdog who could help fishermen retrieve fish and ducks and bring them back to their boats. Their soft mouths and gentle jaws made them perfect for delicately handling birds and fish. Eventually, they were brought across the Atlantic Ocean to England after English nobles visited Canada. There, the English continued to refine the breed in the second half of the 19th century. The popularity of the Labrador breed has only continued to grow since then. Today, modern Labs are the most popular dog in America, according to the American Kennel Club, which formally recognized the breed in .Labs are mostly sought after for their unmatched diving aptitude and ability to work in the water, largely thanks to their water-repellent coats, webbed feet and otter-like tail. You can also reach out to Labrador Retriever rescue organizations to adopt a Lab or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. No, Labs are not hypoallergenic. In fact, Labs shed frequently. Overall, some dog breeds may have less reactive dander, which may make them be seen as hypoallergenic. But it mainly depends on how your body responds and how sensitive your allergies are to any particular animal. Can Labrador Retrievers swim? Yes, Labrador Retrievers can swim; they have webbed feet, which help propel them through the water. They readily jump into the water to retrieve fish or ducks when directed. Can Labrador Retrievers be guard dogs? They perform better at jobs that require constant stimulation, like sporting activities or being a therapy or service animal. What are the most common Labrador mixes? Labs are always up for anything. For those who love to stay active and want a loyal canine companion, Labs are undoubtedly the way to go. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Built for sport, the Lab is muscular and athletic. They have a short, easy-care coat, friendly demeanor, keen intelligence, and plenty of energy. Devotion to this breed runs deep; Labs are loving, people-oriented dogs who live to serve their families, and owners and fans sometimes liken their Labs to angels. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called the St. Today, most Labs skip the hard labor and spend their days being pampered and loved by their people. However, some Labs still serve as indispensable working dogs. They also excel as a search and rescue dog or as a retriever for hunters, thanks to their athletic build, strong nose, and courageous nature. And Labs have also become the breed to beat at dog sports such as agility and obedience competitions, especially obedience. In fact, owners say their sweet, helpful Lab is likely to greet an intruder and happily show them where the goods are stashed. One role has remained constant: wonderful companion and friend. If you are considering getting a Labrador Retriever, be sure to do your research to find a reputable breeder. Labrador Retrievers are wonderful dogs, but they require a lot of time and attention. They are not a good choice for people who are not active or who do not have a lot of time to spend with their pets. Originally called St. Although their heritage is unknown, many believe the St. The second Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first, and had St. The third Earl of Malmesbury was the first person to refer to the dogs as Labradors. In Newfoundland, the breed disappeared because of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep no more than one dog, and owning a female was highly taxed, so girl puppies were culled from litters. In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in .They also top the list in Canada and England. Today, Labs work in drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, therapy, assistance to those with disabilities, and as retrievers for hunters. They also excel in all forms of dog competitions: show, field, agility, and obedience. Labrador Retriever Size Males stand .Females stand .Aside from a winning personality, they have the intelligence and eagerness to please that make them easy to train. Training is definitely necessary because this breed has a lot of energy and exuberance. The working heritage of the Lab means they are active. This breed needs activity, both physical and mental, to keep them happy. There is some variation in the activity level of Labs: some are rowdy, others are more laid back. All thrive on activity. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders, as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. However, a puppy should not be taken for too long walks and should play for a few minutes at a time. It is up to you to end play and training sessions. Without training, a rambunctious Lab puppy will soon grow to be a very large, rowdy dog. Luckily, Labs take to training well; in fact, they often excel in obedience competitions. Start with puppy kindergarten , which not only teaches your pup good canine manners, but helps them learn how to be comfortable around other dogs and people. Look for a class that uses positive training methods that reward the dog for getting it right, rather than punishing them for getting it wrong. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility, with its one-inch jumps. Labrador Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2. They've won the dog personality popularity contest for so many years, as Labs are devoted to their owners—always willing to show you their affection and receive your adoration in return—are highly intelligent, and are happiest doing any and all family activities. Their enthusiasm not only makes them fun to be around, but also makes them a hard-working breed. Labs are companionable, bonding with all family members, and famously friendly to every person and pup they meet. While they have high energy and require lots of activity , they are eager to please and highly trainable. Appearance Thanks to their role as a hunter's companion, the Labrador retriever is a sturdy dog, weighing in at anywhere from 55—80 pounds. Labs come in three colors: chocolate, black, and yellow. While black Labs were an early favorite with breeders, all three types of Labs are common today. Some breeders do offer "rare" Labs, including polar white, fox red, and even silver, but these are simply variations of the three original Lab coloring combinations. Their top coat is short and thick. Their undercoat is softer and helps provide protection from the weather, especially cold temperatures and water, a nod to their original role as retrievers. A Lab's tail serves a purpose in their heritage as well. They are thick and tapered, an "otter tail" that acts as a rudder when Labs swim. But watch out on land—this happy breed gets to wagging their tail often and eagerly, and won't stop if you happen to be in the way. Yellow Labs might be easy to confuse with golden retrievers. Though both are friendly pups and popular with families, they distinctly different breeds. Temperament "The ideal disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non aggressive towards man or animal," the breed standard says. They are friendly with new people and animals they meet. Tops in the personality department, Labs are also highly intelligent, making them very trainable. They do have lots of energy, so you'll need to stay active with them, but they are also happy to relax at home for family movie night. What many veterinarians do find, however, is that each Lab is an individual with his own personality. Some Labs are more mellow, while others can be higher energy. Some tend to be more anxious dogs. And you can even have a Lab that is a bit of a goofball. But no matter what personality your Lab puppy grows to develop, one thing is always the same. Living Needs Labs adore their owners. They will want to live indoors and sleep as close as possible to you—or even on you. They like to get outside to play, but don't leave them unattended for too long as they may prove they have a naughty side. Labs have been known to dig and chew, so invest in plenty of sturdy chew toys to keep yours entertained. If properly introduced and trained, Labs can also get along well with other pets in the home including cats , other dogs, and small animals. They are competitors, doing well in agility, field tests, and at dog shows. And they absolutely love to swim. Care When you welcome a Lab to your home, be prepared for lots of shedding. Grooming isn't substantial, but brushing your dog daily will help reduce the tumbleweeds of fur scattered about your house from their thick double coat. They should be bathed every other month to keep them smelling fresh. Brushing their teeth a couple of times a week, keeping their nails trimmed —likely once or twice a month—and checking their ears for redness or odor should also be on your Lab care checklist. A daily minute walk or a lively game of fetch will help your pup burn off some of his energy. Lack of activity could lead to undesirable behavior, but don't overdo it—this "workaholic" breed is apt to exhaust itself. Don't let Lab puppies run and play on hard surfaces for their first two years so they don't damage their joints. Of course their reputation for good behavior precedes them, but that doesn't mean you can skip training sessions with your Lab. Training is important to ensure they don't grow to become too rowdy. Introduce Labrador puppies to other humans and animals early to help socialize them properly. This, coupled with ample positive reinforcement , will allow your pup to grow into the friendly Lab many know and love. Health Labs are a pretty hearty and healthy breed , living 10—12 years. But, as with all breeds, there are some common conditions to be aware of. Elbow and hip dysplasia , heart disorders such as tricuspid valve dysplasia TVD , epilepsy , and hereditary myopathy or muscle weakness can all affect Labs. They can also face eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Owners should also be aware of a condition called exercise induced collapse EIC. Labs may also develop hot spots —or acute moist dermatitis—cold tail, and ear infections. History A bit misnamed, Labs actually come from Newfoundland—off the northeastern coast of Canada—not Labrador, according to the Labrador Retriever Club. Descended from St. John's water dogs, Labradors are a traditional waterdog used to retrieve ducks and keep fishermen company. At the end of the work day, Labs were then happy to head home to spend the night with the fishermen's families. They became increasingly popular starting in the early s, when they were brought to England by nobles who appreciated their work ethic and disposition. Public Domain It may be hard to believe, but by the s, Labs were almost extinct because of government restrictions and tax laws—the same laws that led to the St. John's water dogs' extinction, according to the Canadian Broadcast Corporation. Thankfully saved by English breeders, they were introduced to the U. After World War II, the Lab's popularity took over and grew for decades until they ultimately achieved the status of America's—and England and Canada's—most popular pooch. Fun Facts In , for the 29th year in a row, the Lab was voted the number one most popular breed. King Buck was the model Labrador retriever featured on a U. Another famous Lab is Ben of Hyde , born in .Considered the first documented yellow Lab, today most lines of yellow Labs can be traced to his bloodline. The star of the show, Marley, is actually several different Labs who played the role to reflect the various age stages of Marley during the film. His family adopted another chocolate Lab, Seamus , after Clinton's presidency ended. Was this page helpful? Post by: Mara B. These dogs had black coats, sometimes white crests on their chests, and white feet. Portraits of them look like a cross between a modern Lab and a Border Collie. Like Labradors, the Newfoundland breed had webbed toes, a two-layered, water-repellent coat, and a strong, broad tail that works like a rudder in the water, making it a superb swimmer. The Labrador Retriever has grown to be the most popular dog breed in America. The fishermen found that these dogs had great endurance and strength, so some used them to tow barges. For a while, these trusty fishing dogs waned in popularity in Canada due to a tax imposed on dog owners. Fortunately, British travelers coming to port decided to bring the dogs to England. The breed was refined by English hunters to be better suited for retrieving game and named the Labrador Retriever. Since the 20th century, the Labrador Retriever has grown to be the most popular dog breed in America. Physical Traits of a Labrador Retriever Labs have thick, sturdy bodies, broad heads, and long, otter-like tails that help them to steer themselves in the water. Their webbed toes make for better paddling and keep snow from clumping up between them. They grow to be between 21 and 24 inches at the highest part of their back and may weigh pounds. Labs have an inner coat that is thick and soft to protect their skin from wetness and cold temperatures. Their special double coat makes them waterproof! Labrador Retrievers may be black, chocolate, or yellow, and all colors can appear in a single litter. The nose of the dog will match its coat. Labs usually have brown eyes. The exception to this is that some Chocolate Labs have hazel eyes. The Labrador Retriever Personality Labradors are known for their gentleness, tolerance, and intelligence. Their easy-going nature is what makes them the top choice as American family dogs. They are generally very good with kids and other canines. Of course, being completely adorable probably contributes to their popularity too! As natural hunters, Labs are also known to be active and love exploring. Regular exercise is a great way to let out some of their energy and help them maintain a healthy weight. With lots of playtime and proper training, even high-energy Labs can be calm and obedient. A coat cleaning every once in a while will help it look shinier and healthier. Labs tend to pack on extra pounds quickly if they are sedentary or overfed. Obesity is one of the most common health issues for Labradors, and hypothyroidism and diabetes are also not uncommon for the breed. When a dog becomes overweight, exercise can be tough on their joints and cause them pain. Moderating their treats and making sure to measure the proper amounts of food at mealtime are other ways to keep their weight in check. You can also opt for dog-safe fruits and veggies as an alternative to higher-calorie, processed treats. Labs are also known to develop cataracts and have troubles with their hips, knees, elbows, and shoulders. Annual and wellness exams for these doggies should include check-ups on their eyes and joints. Important wellness procedures can be covered by a dog insurance plan. Start a quote for your best friend. Great Games for Labs Try doing these activities with your Labrador Retriever for fun and exercise rolled into one! Go Fetch! These natural retrievers love to chase after toys and bring them back — in the yard or the water! Balls, rope toys, ring toys, Frisbees, and dummies will all work well for a game of fetch. Take them to the beach, a lake, a pond, or a backyard pool and let them paddle around. Playing a game of fetch or chase in the shallow waters near shore can also be lots of fun. Just to be safe, you may want to investigate purchasing a dog life jacket. Nose work, or scent work, involves hiding objects marked with various scents for your dog to track. The activity can be especially stimulating for Labrador Retrievers because of their natural drive to hunt, but any breed of dog may enjoy it. How to teach your Lab to do nose work: Get scents. Essential oils like anise, birch, and clover are great choices for nose work. You can douse the object with the oil or inject the scent using a special syringe called a scent injector, which you should be able to find at your local sporting goods store, or online. Choose the mark. Dummies work great for essential oils. Get a few and douse each one with a different smell! You can use plush dog toys, pieces of cloth, or strips of leather for scent marking too. It can also be fun to leave a scent trail to the objects. To do this, drag the scent-marked objects along the ground leading up to their hiding place, or squeeze some drops of essential oil on the way to the chosen hiding spot. And while their faces often express a sense of worry, their hearts are full of affection and fun — and a little bit of mischief. History and Origins The Labrador Retriever breed originated not in Labrador, but on the coast of Newfoundland, in the 17th century. They were trained to bring in the fishing-nets through the icy waters for the fishermen and, in the early 19th century, were brought to Poole Harbour in Great Britain. They were so attractive and with such appealing personalities that the fishermen had umpteen offers from Englishmen to buy them. The breed with their working abilities was instantly successful as a gundog. The Earl of Malmesbury became fascinated by these dogs, known at that time as Saint John's Dogs, and he started breeding them, calling them Labrador Dogs. Today, Labradors are still used as working gundogs as well as being beloved family pets. Ideal Owner Ideal Lab owners enjoy long walks, are mud-proof and water-proof, and have the time, patience and skill to teach this breed to be a polite member of society. Although universally thought of as the ultimate, easy-going family dog and they do generally love everyone! Great for active families with children who can take part in training and exercise — and who can walk this active gundog a couple of hours every day in all weathers. Exercise Needs Labradors will adapt to the amount of time you can allocate for their exercise, as long as they are kept active. Ideally, a couple of hours a day being a good amount for a healthy adult. They love long walks with a chance to run and play off the lead. Many Labradors, unfortunately, become overweight because they are bought by families who want them for their reputation as the perfect dog with children, without realising that this is a working dog, who needs a lot of exercise and training to stay happy and healthy. As well as walks, a Labrador will revel in games and play with their owner, as they are highly social, and need to be involved in all family activities. Space Requirements The Labrador is a large, active breed who is at heart a country dog, and so needs a good-sized living space. As the Labrador size is large and their energy is high, they will appreciate a large garden and need access to the great outdoors for long walks. Nutrition and Feeding Large breed dogs, as well as having large appetites, benefit from a different balance of nutrients including minerals and vitamins compared to smaller-breed dogs. The Labrador is prone to bloating and stomach problems; smaller, more frequent meals can help minimise this risk. Your dog's diet needs to have the right balance of all the main nutrient groups including a constant supply of fresh water. It's important to conduct regular body condition scores to ensure you keep your dog in ideal shape and remember to feed them at least twice daily and in accordance with the feeding guidelines of their particular food. Proper nutrition along with care can contribute to a Labrador lifespan reaching 14 years. Grooming Labradors The Labrador grooming process is fairly easy as their coats are simple to maintain. Even though the Labrador size is large, their coat is thick and dense with a weather-resistant undercoat that can easily be kept clean with a simple brush through once a week, and more regular attention when moulting. However, they do love water and mud, and so they may need more regular grooming to keep them clean. Watch out for grass seeds in the summer as they tend to charge around the countryside! Training Labradors Labradors are generally a joy to train as they are both clever and biddable, and love working with their owner. Despite being generally unproblematic, they do still need training as they have a need to work and to keep their busy brains occupied. Plus, they can easily get overly-boisterous, and even destructive, if not given plenty of exercise, and an outlet for their hard-wired breed behaviours. Are Labradors Good Family Dogs? There is a good reason why the Labrador has a reputation as being, almost, the perfect family dog. This is a breed who loves everyone and everything. Their only drawback is that they need a lot of exercise, and so they need an active family who enjoy walking and games. All dogs and children need to be taught to get on with and respect each other, and be safe together. Even so, dogs and young children should never be left alone together and adults should supervise all interactions between them.
You can also visit your nearest rescue center and see if they have dogs for sale. If it has a short coat, you may brush your pet every other day. The maximum is around three times a week. If it has a longer coat, you should brush its fur more often to minimize tangling. You may also give it baths when needed. Use dog shampoo to keep its coat clean and fresh. This leads to several symptoms such as thinner than regular coats, weight gain but no appetite changes, and skin diseases. Your dog will also shed more excessively than usual. Upon detection of these symptoms, take your dog to the vet for proper treatment. Beagle Dwarfism: Beagle Poodles may inherit this from their Beagle parent. This is a condition wherein the dog is a lot smaller than usual. This causes serious issues, such as back and neck soreness, sensation concerns, decreased bowel control, and paralysis, at worst. When left unchecked, this will lead to arthritis and crippling lameness for your pet. Follow the recommended meal plan for your dog. Part of their playtime should be allowing them to run around and chase, due to their hunting traits. Aside from physical activity, Beagle Poodles also need mental stimulation to sharpen their innate intelligence. Thus, they need toys that will supply both of these needs. The toy is made of several chambers where dog treats can be placed. It has to figure out how to get the food in each container since not all can be opened the same way. Once the ball is thrown, the rubber material makes it bounce around more, allowing your dog to give chase. Also, it has a compartment where dog food can be placed, making your dog figure out how to get the treats from the inside. Poodle Beagle Mix Training Training the Beagle Poodle requires you to understand the intelligence and personality of both its parents. That way, you can better prepare yourself for the behavior of the mixed breed. Beagles may be loyal, but it still needs to be trained to recognize that it must follow commands from its owner. This is due to its tendency to become stubborn sometimes. It also gets easily distracted when something grabs its attention. It will run towards what it saw, completely ignoring you in the process. It must be trained to keep focused on the task at hand. Poodles are known to be one of the most intelligent breeds. Teaching a Poodle some tricks will come easy, provided that it is regularly exercised and mentally stimulated. They also bore easily, so constant activity and attention is needed. If everything goes well, a Poodle will be able to do tricks that not every dog can accomplish. You may follow the tips below: Learn how to keep their attention. When you want to begin training your dog, start by strengthening your bonds. Once you figure that out, you can quickly bring them back to you and make them focus on training. Reward their good behavior. Positive conditioning always helps a dog stay motivated. Once they learn to do a particular trick, give them rewards. You may use dog treats or give them more play time. The more they realize that their good behavior is met with rewards, the better they will perform during training and everyday life. Teach the dog to recognize you. Beagle Poodles need to be trained in obedience due to their highly distractable nature. Thus, you have to be able to establish that you are the alpha and they need to listen to you. Use dog clickers and whistles to grab their attention whenever they are straying so that you can focus more on honing their skills. Ensure regular exercise. An active dog is a more trainable dog. Allow your pet to roam around the place and make sure they get their daily dose of walks. They also love to socialize, so part of their exercise should be letting them play with other dogs and meet other people. Beagle Mixed With Poodle And Families Beagle Poodles are not only excellent pets for new owners, but they are also great companions for families. They exhibit the loyalty and serving attitudes of hunting breeds that your family will surely appreciate. They can watch over your household while you sleep and give your family love and affection during the daytime. After you and your wife get home from work, your dog will be there to relieve your stress. Their small size makes them good playmates for children as well. They love to run around and play, so if you have active kids, let them play with the dog. This allows you to give both your children and your dog their much-needed exercise. Once the dog is trained, kids can also give them commands, so that bonding times will be more fun between them and the dog. Taking care of your Beagle Poodle makes it happy, and a happy dog also means a happy household. Getting a pet that gives your family more joy is always a worthy investment. If all goes well, a Beagle Poodle will live out its lifespan not only as a loyal family dog but also as an everyday companion and best friend. We pride ourselves on providing forever. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. newborn black labrador puppies - Conclusion How do Goldendoodles react to being alone? Goldendoodles are renowned for their sociability. This pup is grown to treat their family as their pack, so they behave the same way with their human family. They have multiple traits that qualify them for being the perfect family dog for first-time owners. This breed is nothing but friendly, loving, loyal, and incredibly intelligent. Their low maintenance nature and quick learning are what make them adapt quickly to any environment. Goldendoodles are the most laidback pups you can interact with. They go with the flow and can settle and enjoy in any situation. So, these adaptable pups can definitely be left alone at home for a few hours. This also comes into play when you plan to leave them at home for prolonged hours. So, leaving them alone at home may not be as hard for them as it could be for you! Can I leave my Goldendoodle puppy alone? While adult Goldendoodles can adapt to living alone for some time, the same cannot be said for Goldendoodle puppies. The maximum amount you can leave your puppy at home is maybe 4 hours. This is because extended periods of loneliness may trigger your pup to have certain conditions that may affect their livelihood over time. This is because this loving puppy can grow incredibly attached to their owners, which results in dependency on their presence at all times. Separation anxiety can cause your pup to be destructive, be agitated, and bark aggressively. They need to relieve themselves every few hours, so if you leave them without guidance, there may be a disaster all over your house. So, how can I leave my Golden doodle puppy at home? In some situations, leaving your puppy at home cannot be avoided. In that case, you should prepare for the situation by taking the following options into consideration. This will not only make you feel safe, leaving your pup at home with someone trustworthy but also make your dog feel like they have some company. These professionals can definitely handle your pup for a few hours with extreme care and love. This will help your puppy fall right to sleep when you get back home and get dinner done for them. So, you can quickly go out for the night while your Goldendoodle sleeps away peacefully. By following through with all these steps, you will not only be relaxed when heading out but also make your Goldendoodle feel relaxed. These steps will help familiarize your pup with the idea of staying alone at home. They can also train your dog to be self-sufficient and independent. Start shorter, extend over time The first and perhaps the most critical step you need to take is to gradually ensure your pup adjusts to the time left alone. So, start small and extend the period over time. You can start by leaving your pup home alone for 2 hours and then gradually increase the time by 30 minutes. This will make sure that your pup is safe from external threats. Additionally, the indoor environment can help the Goldendoodlefeel relax and comfortable and help them feel reassured. Comfort is necessary Being comfortable is vital for a good time, and the same applies to your Goldendoodle. Make sure that the pup has immediate access to food, water, and the toilet. Always stock up on snacks and water for your Goldendoodlebefore, leaving the house. Goldendoodles will require regular grooming and upkeep. Give safe distracting puzzles toys Put soft stuffed toys and puzzles next to your pup. Toys can be destroyed and become a danger! A reasonably indestructible chew toy is a Kong. You can stuff a Kong and freeze it — giving a hour long distraction as your dog unravels the treats. Distracting toys that make sounds or have lights can keep your pup engaged for hours. Additionally, dog-friendly puzzles prove to be an interactive way to distract your intelligent Goldendoodle. These toys will undoubtedly keep them distracted from your absence at home. Make sure that your pup is relaxed and relieved of any and every energy they might have in them. This will get them tired and most likely to fall asleep as soon as you leave. Avoid hyping your pup up before leaving the house. The more energy they have, the more chaotic the aftermath could be. So, you should take them out for a walk or play with them an hour before you need to leave. Create a calm environment Creating a relaxing environment for your Goldendoodle is essential in calming them down before you leave. Keep the ambiance low and soothing, and refrain from leaving your pup in pitch-black darkness. This will scare your Goldendoodle or trigger them. However, steer clear from strobe lights as they might make your dog get hyper or make them anxious. Consider a quiet radio or Spotify playlist Leave on some soft and calming music or podcasts in the background. This will make the pup believe that there is someone at home, and that idea alone can help with their separation anxiety. However, do not leave the TV on for them. The television can be visually engaging for your pup and may cause them to be hyper. So, opt for radios or playlists instead to ensure a calm and soothing environment. Proper planning is necessary, but so is a routine or ritual followed each time the owner or family leaves home and the dog. It can be as simple as sitting for some snuggle time right before leaving, offering some soothing words and a hug goodbye followed by a treat or two. Whatever method is used, it should be done consistently so the dog comes to understand and know what is coming. With time and patience, they will know when certain words or a particular series of events happen that next, they will be home alone. It can, however, minimize the potential for problems. Because of their smaller size, they will need to be let outside to go potty more frequently than standard Goldendoodles, but a well-trained mini should still be able to make it up to 8 hours. If the Mini Goldendoodle is a puppy and not trained to use the bathroom in a designated place, then they should be left in their cage or playpen instead of roaming around the house. Leaving a mini Goldendoodle alone is much the same as leaving a standard one. However, these smaller dogs have smaller bladders and therefore cannot hold their potty breaks for as long as larger dogs. You may find it more difficult to train your mini Goldendoodle to hold it in for long periods of time. But other than that, the process for leaving your mini Goldendoodle home alone is much the same as for standards. In Conclusion Being alone is hard for everyone, dogs, and humans alike. For dogs such as Doodles that are so loving, faithful, and friendly, being away from their human family can be stressful, especially in the early days and months. Why Goldendoodles Hate Being Left Alone All dogs are natural pack creatures that do best when living in a group or pack. Every pack has a natural hierarchy within which every dog knows its place. When a member of the pack leaves, even temporarily, the other dogs get anxious and insecure because the familiar order has changed. Your Goldendoodle regards you as the pack leader. As pack leader, you provide your dog with food, shelter, direction, and security. So, when you leave your Goldendoodle alone, he might have issues with separation anxiety. What Is Separation Anxiety? Most dogs with this condition follow their owner around the home, refusing to be separated from them for even a few minutes. Usually, dogs with separation anxiety begin to show signs of stress as soon as they realize that their owner is planning to go out without them. Common separation anxiety behaviors include: Excessive barking or howling. Destructive behaviors, such as chewing items of furniture, damaging wall coverings, even chewing through wooden doors! Defecating and urinating in the home or crate, even though the dog is potty trained. Sometimes, separation anxiety is confused with another condition called isolation distress. These dogs need to have another creature around to keep them company. That could be another dog, the family cat, or a member of the human family. Goldendoodles are generally pretty chilled-out dudes that can cope with being left home alone for a bit of time once they have been acclimated to your regular routine. Most adult dogs are okay with being left for a while, as long as they know that you will come back to them. However, there are some practical things to consider when deciding how long you can reasonably leave your Goldendoodle home alone. So, how long can a Goldendoodle hold its bladder? As a general rule of thumb, a healthy adult Goldendoodle of over 18 months of age should be able to hold on for up to six hours maximum before he needs to pee. You should not expect your dog to wait to relieve himself for longer than that! Can Goldendoodles Be Left Outside? Some dog breeds, such as Siberian Huskies , are content to be left outside while their owner is out at work. Goldendoodles do not like to be kept outside. Secondly, as previously mentioned, the Doodle is prone to separation anxiety, and they need to be with their family as much as possible. For example, many pups enjoy destroying things, such as your cushions, shoes, even chewing wooden skirtings and doors. A naughty Goldendoodle might even mark your floor coverings out of frustration by urinating on them! Confinement Anxiety Also, some dogs suffer from confinement anxiety. Confinement anxiety is a similar condition to claustrophobia in humans. If your Goldendoodle suffers from confinement anxiety, it would be cruel to shut him in a crate, even for a short period. Goldendoodle puppies are like children in that they do best when settled into a routine. That way, you can let your puppy out regularly for potty stops. When your puppy is older, you can leave him alone at home in the secure, safe environment of his crate for very short periods, gradually extending that time so that your pet gets used to being left by himself when you need to go out. How Soon And How Long? That could seriously stress the little guy in the very early days in his new home. A puppy aged between two and three months can be left alone for longer, up to around two hours. Puppies aged four months can wait for around four hours, so you can leave them alone for up to that length of time. After that age, you can leave your puppy for a little longer, but never for more than six hours at a stretch. Exercise Your Goldendoodle! Goldendoodles are energetic dogs that need plenty of daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy both mentally and physically. Before you leave your furry friend at home alone, taking him out for a walk or playing fetch in your backyard can help your dog to relax and settle down when you go out. So, if possible, give your Goldendoodle something to eat half an hour or so before you leave. Potty Break A few minutes before you leave, take your Goldendoodle outside for a potty break. Something familiar can help to relax your dog, especially if that item smells of you. Work From Home If possible and practical, ask your employee if you might be permitted to work from home for a few days or hours per week. The Covid pandemic has seen many people being forced to work from their home office. That strategy has generally worked very well for employers and employees, so many organizations are content to continue with that now that lockdowns are easing. Take Your Dog To Work! These days, many companies recognize the positive effects of their staff bringing their pets to work with them. In fact, commercial giant, Amazon has over 7, dogs in their employ! Depending on what kind of business you work in, taking your Goldendoodle to work every day might be an option for you. Come Home For Lunch If you live close enough to where you work, you can save yourself some cash and solve the problem of leaving your Doodle home alone by coming home for your lunch break. So, enjoy lunch with your dog and give him a comfort break before you go back to work. Doggy Daycare Goldendoodles are happy, friendly dogs that usually get along fine with other pups. Your pet will be supervised, fed, exercised, and can enjoy a happy time playing with his new furry friends. Hire A Dog Sitter For dogs that suffer from isolation distress, hiring a dog sitter can work very well. Ask A Friend To Check In On Your Pet If you have a dog-loving friend or neighbors who are also pet parents, you could ask them to check in on your Goldendoodle from time to time during the day. Your friend could even bring their own canine companion, too, for a mini doggy playdate. In Conclusion Did you enjoy our guide to leaving your Goldendoodle home alone? If you did, please share. On average, you can leave a Goldendoodle over 18 months of age home alone for a maximum of six hours. When it comes to leaving puppies alone, it depends on the age of the pup and his capacity to hang on before needing to relieve himself. Most Goldendoodles enjoy some independence and do just fine when left alone. If your dog is properly trained and is used to you leaving them alone, then they will likely have no problems. But some dogs may suffer from separation anxiety, which can manifest itself in destructive chewing, barking, howling, whining, or going to the bathroom inside the house. Fortunately, my dog, Bailey never did this. If you are sure your Goldendoodle is suffering from separation anxiety, you should seek the help of a professional dog trainer or behaviourist. Don't try to fix the problem yourself with outdated methods such as "letting them cry it out", as you could make it worse. Yes, your Goldendoodle puppy can be left alone, but depending how old it is, will determine how long you can leave it. So, if your Goldendoodle puppy is 2 months old, it can be left alone for up to 2 hours. If it is 3 months old, it can be left alone for 3 hours and so on. But keep in mind, this is just a guideline and your puppy might not tolerate being left alone for that long. It also depends on if your puppy uses pads or is already potty trained. If they are not potty trained , you will need to come home more frequently to let them out to go to the bathroom. What I did with Bailey when I got him as a week-old puppy, was I started leaving him alone for 1 minute, then 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes and so on. If he was doing well, I would start to leave him for 30 minutes to an hour. Building up this independence gradually will help your puppy become more comfortable with being left alone and reduce the chances of developing separation anxiety. Separation Anxiety in Goldendoodles Separation Anxiety is when a dog experiences anxiety or stress when left alone. It doesn't matter if there are other people or animals in the house, as long as you're not there, they get anxious and can even show destructive behaviors. COVID puppies are dogs that were adopted during the pandemic when everyone was forced to stay home. And since their Goldendoodle owners were home all day, the puppy never learned how to be independent and develop confidence by themselves. Now that things are slowly returning back to normal and people are going back to work, these COVID puppies are having a hard time being left alone and are developing separation anxiety. So, if you adopted your Goldendoodle during the pandemic, make sure to give them plenty of time to get used to being by themselves before leaving them for long periods of time. Isolation Distress in Goldendoodles Isolation distress is different from separation anxiety in that your dog is fine as long as there is someone in the house, it doesn't matter who. But as soon as everyone leaves, they start to feel anxious. This is common in puppies and young dogs that have never been left alone before and need time to adjust. How long you can leave your Goldendoodle puppy alone matters on its age months and where you are in the process of giving it alone time. Puppies 8 weeks and younger shouldn't be left alone for more than 30 minutes. Goldendoodle Puppies 3 to 6 months old can be left alone for 1 to 3 hours. And puppies 6 to 12 months old can be left for 4 to 6 hours. Keep in mind, these are just guidelines and your puppy might not be able to tolerate being left alone for that long and might need more frequent potty breaks. It's important to start with shorter periods of time 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and gradually increase it as your puppy gets more comfortable. No, you shouldn't leave your Goldendoodle alone outdoors. Goldendoodles are not the types of dogs that can be left outside by themselves for long periods of time. Dogs are social creatures and need companionship. They need to be around people to feel comfortable and secure. When you leave them alone outdoors, they feel isolated and anxious. Unless you have a big yard for them to run around in for an hour or two, it's best to keep them indoors. No dogs should really be left outside all day, regardless of the breed. Usually, lazy people who don't want to take care of their dogs will do this. If your Goldendoodle is correctly crate trained, you can leave them alone there for a few hours. However, just like anything, this should be done gradually. Start with 1 hour and work up to 5 or 6 hours as your puppy gets more comfortable being in the crate. The crate shouldn't be a way to punish them. It is a confined space where they can feel safe and can go on their own too. It's also a way to keep them safe when you can't watch them. A Goldendoodle puppy can hold its bladder for 1 hour for every month old they are. So, a 3-month-old puppy can go for 3 hours without going to the bathroom. When Bailey was about 5 months old, he could easily keep it in for the whole night while we were sleeping and didn't need a potty break at all. An adult Goldendoodle can hold its bladder for 8 hours. It really depends on how you potty trained them and how often they go outside to relieve themselves. Tips and Guidance for Leaving Your Goldendoodle Alone There are a few things that you can do to make leaving your Goldendoodle alone a little easier for both of you: 1. Practice Leaving Your Goldendoodle Alone The most important thing you must do is to practice leaving your Goldendoodle alone. As I mentioned in this article before, there are a lot of COVID puppies who haven't had a chance to experience being left alone yet. Start with short periods of time while you're home. First, just go to another room and come back. Then go to another room, close the door, make some noise and come back. Work up the time to the first 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, 20 minutes and so on. When your puppy is comfortable with you being in another room and doesn't whine, start leaving the house for short periods of time. First, just step outside and come back in. Then step outside, close the door and come back in. Desensitize them to the sound of the door closing. You want to make it as uneventful as possible. Don't say goodbye to your puppy or make a big deal out of it when you arrive back. Work up the time you're gone to first 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 10 minutes and so on. Once you reach the minute threshold, you can step it up to an hour and then a few hours. It's important that you do this daily so your puppy gets used to it and knows that you will always come back. Tire Your Dog Out A tired dog is a good dog. This is especially true for puppies. You want to make sure that your puppy is tuckered out before you leave them alone. This way, they're more likely to take a nap while you're gone. Dogs need to tire out physically and mentally before you leave the house to make sure they don't get too anxious. For the physical part, take them on a long walk or run. For the mental part, you can do training with a clicker that makes them think. For example, place two bottles on the floor and only give them a treat and a click once they touched the right one. You can easily tire out a dog mentally in mins with this kind of exercise. Just act like it's any other day and you're going to work or run errands. The same goes for when you come back home. Don't greet your puppy right away or make too much of a fuss about it. Just simply walk in, put your things down, wait a few minutes until they calm down and then you can greet them. What happens when you make a big scene when you leave is like you are winding up a toy. Your dog gets more and more excited and anxious and the second you leave, that is when they blow up. Just think about it, in their natural environment, would their mother make a big scene when she leaves them? No, she would just leave. Do the same! I know it's hard, I always want to cuddle Bailey when I leave, but it's better for him to just stay calm. Create a Calm and Safe Environment When you're leaving your puppy alone, you want to make sure that they're in a calm and safe environment. One good trick I do is turn on the radio and the TV so there's some noise in the background. This way, it doesn't feel so quiet and empty for Bailey when I leave. Also, make sure their cage is open so they can go in and out if you don't want them to stay there while you are gone. Also, leave a few toys around for them that they can chew on. Try Puzzle Toys or a Frozen Kong To keep your puppy entertained while you're gone, try giving them a puzzle toy or filling up a Kong with some dog food and freezing it. This way, they have to work for their food and it keeps them occupied for a little bit. There are a ton of Kong Toys out there, that you can stuff with treats, kibble or even peanut butter. Consider Doggy Daycare or a Dog Sitter If you're going to be gone for a long time or if you just don't feel comfortable leaving your puppy alone yet, consider a doggy daycare or hiring a dog sitter. Doggy daycare is a great option for them to socialize, but it shouldn't be the first time they encounter other dogs as it can be overwhelming. A dog sitter is a great option if you want someone to come over and check on your puppy, take them on walks or just play with them. You can find a reputable dog sitter or dog walker on websites like Rover. Just think about how it would feel for you if you're hungry and someone locks you in a room for hours. Not fun, right? The same goes for your puppy. They need to have a full stomach so they're not too anxious while you're gone. You also want to make sure that they have access to fresh water at all times. Can Goldendoodle Puppies be Left Alone? Yes, goldendoodle puppies can be left alone, depending on how old they are. The simple formula is if your puppy is for example 3 months old, they can be left alone for 3 hours. However, all puppies are different so make sure your puppy is comfortable with being left alone. Conclusion Leaving your Goldendoodle home alone doesn't have to be a stressful experience for you or your puppy. By following the tips above, you can make sure that your puppy is safe, entertained and well-fed while you're gone. Do you have any other tips on how to leave a Goldendoodle home alone? Share them in the comments below! In general, dogs are incredibly social animals and are hardwired with a pack mentality. We can gather this information simply by observing wolves, dingoes and other wild dog species that live in tight-knit family groups with complex social lives and hierarchies. The domestic dog was slowly bred down from these wild counterparts to be even more companion-oriented so as to be able to work closely with his master performing many useful jobs such as herding and hunting. Despite most dogs no longer having dedicated jobs, today in the 21st century, we often ask a lot more of our dogs. We want them to be our best friends and closest companions and yet allow us to work full time. We want them to be the very best snugglers on the couch while we watch Netflix, but we also want them to be calm, well-behaved indoors while we are gone for hours at a time. This is quite the psychological challenge for our dear furry friends, but one that they can overcome if we set them up for success from a young age. Poodles, and therefore doodles, are known for being incredibly people-oriented and intelligent. They have often been described as almost humanlike in both their overall smarts and emotional intuition. The result is the most devoted companion you could ever ask for, but again, the downside is that this is not a breed that is content to be left alone for the entire day. The typical doodle will want to be with you in any room of the house — often waiting for you outside of the shower, following you to the bathroom, etc. To have a happy, well-behaved doodle, an owner must be prepared to spend time with their pup and should not be surprised that their doodle prefers to be at their feet or on their lap all day every day. The good news is that doodles are highly trainable and adaptable. So as long as you train them to be alone from an early age, they can adapt to your schedule within reason. When it comes to leaving a puppy alone, we strongly recommend crate training Puppies need to be confined in a safe area when away from their owners as they are prone to getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. Chewing on electrical cords, eating plants, or swallowing tiny objects all seem like great ideas to the 8-week-old puppy mind! Keeping your puppy in a kennel while you are gone not only keeps them safe, but when utilized correctly, the crate actually feels like a safe, cozy place to your pup and will help keep him calm and at rest when he must be left alone. Please note that early introduction to crate training is critical. Finding a breeder who exposes a puppy to crates and individual time before they go home definitely puts your pup one step ahead with crate training. At Jenna Lee Designer Doodles, we begin crate introduction when our pups are 3 weeks old. By the time they go home at 8 weeks, each pup spends an hour in their kennel alone daily. Assuming your pup has been properly introduced and feels comfortable in and around their kennel see our article on crate training for tips! You want to consider their potty needs as well as social and energy needs, both of which are greater now than they will be when your pup is an adult. For an week old pup, we often recommend starting with hours in their kennel at a time. At weeks of age puppies have very small bladders so they need to potty at least that often during the day. So short play sessions followed by short naps work best. The good news is that puppies grow up fast. By the time they are weeks old, your pup can stretch his alone time to 3 hours. And by weeks of age, hours is attainable. During this puppy phase, make sure your pup has frequent access to water throughout the day before you plan to leave him for a longer period of time so that he avoids drinking a whole bowl of water right before kennel time! And of course, a potty break right before you leave is critical. He will still have a lot of energy, but he will be able to go for more sustained periods of exercise and settle down for longer periods of time. We do not recommend leaving a doodle, no matter how old, alone for longer than hours at a time. As a high energy, social breed, doodles need at least some kind of interaction and activity half-way through a full work day. Coming home for your lunch break to play fetch with your pup, hiring a dog walker, or sending your pup to doggy daycare to play with some four-legged friends, are all options frequently utilized by full time employees. As social, energetic animals, how and when you give your pup alone time matters when it comes to his contentment and avoiding separation anxiety. One important factor is an appropriate amount of exercise. A tired pup will be much more willing to relax and nap when alone than a pup who has pent up energy. Doodles are moderately active dogs and need daily exercise — especially when they are young. Another way to help your dog accept being home alone is giving him something to do while he is in his crate. There are a number of long-lasting chews, puzzle toys, and snuffle mats that can occupy your doodle for at least some of the time you are away. Finally, make sure that when you are at home with your pup, you are meeting his social needs by spending quality time with him. Doodles tend to love affection as well as play time. We also recommend sleeping with your doodle in the same room as you. Dogs thrive on predictable routines, so with a little practice and training, your pup will soon adapt to being on his own for part of the day. Can Goldendoodles be Left Alone? Goldendoodles may become bored when left alone for too long, and may try and find an outlet for their intensity. Complaints such as coming home to find garbage all over the floor, destroyed pillows and shoes, half-eaten socks, and entire missing cakes and meaty roasts are all too common. Luckily, since Goldendoodles are very easily trained, these types of behaviors can be fixed with time, effort, and consistency. Need help with training? Can Miniature Goldendoodles be left alone? A crate-trained Miniature Goldendoodle can be left alone overnight for six to eight hours, and no more than four hours during the day. The Miniature Goldendoodles are highly sociable dogs that will prefer the company of their owners, rather than being alone. Miniature Goldendoodles are highly sociable dogs that enjoy human company. They simply love spending time and getting affection. They are also high-energy dogs. Many people consider Miniature Goldendoodles the perfect apartment dog. That trait makes them a good option for an indoor pet. However, they are considered to be highly attached to people. So, how long can Miniature Goldendoodles be left alone exactly? There are some factors that determine how long you can leave your dog alone for: 1. Holding in for that long can cause damage to the bladder. A one-month to a four-month puppy can be left alone for no more than two hours. A five to eight-month puppy can be left alone for no more than four hours. Puppy older than eight months can be left alone for six to eight hours. They are so devoted and simply love spending time with their human parents. If you absolutely have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle for six, eight, or ten hours, make sure they are entertained and have where to relieve themselves. However, leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle frequently for long periods of time might cause depression. Spend as much time as possible with your dog and leave them only when you absolutely have to. Energy levels and curiosity Miniature Goldendoodles are high-energy and curious dogs. This is a combination that no one asked for but still got it. If you have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle alone, make sure that he has enough toys to entertain himself. By playing, they will spend that high energy. Leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle in a playpen is okay and totally safe. Playpens are a great idea, especially if you have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle for more than eight hours to go to work. Leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle to roam around the house is a bad idea because a bored doodle is a chewy doodle. When I got my Miniature Goldendoodle three years ago, I was working a full-time job. So, even though it was heartbreaking for me, I had to leave my pup alone for eight hours. Instead, a friend of mine suggested getting a playpen. I went online and ordered a dog playpen from amazon. Playpens are a safe place to leave your dog unsupervised for a longer period of time. I use the playpen every time I have some work around the house, or when I go to work. However, you should start slowly, maybe leave your dog for an hour at first. Then, work your way up but make sure you do not go over eight hours. What can be done to make a Miniature Goldendoodle more comfortable with being left alone? Proper training and socialization are needed to make a Miniature Goldendoodle more accepting and comfortable with being left alone. Miniature Goldendoodles learn what is good and not good behavior through training and socialization. That gives them an idea of what is required of them in life. Once your Miniature Goldendoodle matures physically, emotionally, has been trained, and socialized, they will have a better understanding and will behave well when left alone. You should start slowly and leave them for twenty to forty-five minutes and progress slowly. The leaving alone process should be handled slowly because Miniature Goldendoodles are known to suffer from separation anxiety. As a pet parent, you should have a good leaving and returning ritual. You should never associate bad behavior with leaving. This process begins by taking your Miniature Goldendoodle for a walk, sharing a treat while cuddling on the couch, saying a quick goodbye, and leaving the house. Do not make the leaving process a drama. If you make the leaving process dramatic, start to cry and etc, your dog will take it hard as well. When you get home from work, give a treat to your Miniature Goldendoodle. Always say how good a boy or girl they are and snuggle for a little bit. Always perform the same leaving and returning ritual. When you notice that your dog is handling the leaving process without any major stress, increase the time. Some Miniature Goldendoodles will not accept this very good. You need to perform the leaving and coming back process until they are showing no signs of distress. Doggy daycare is similar to kindergarten. You can drop off your Miniature Goldendoodle before work and pick him up after you finish work. Doggy daycare can be provided by a business or a person. In any case, your dog will be taken care of. At the doggy daycare, your Miniature Goldendoodle will spend time socializing with other dogs and humans. I never took my dog to a doggy daycare because I spent a lot of time training my dog. Almost all dogs that suffer from separation anxiety will love to spend some fun time at the doggy daycare. There, they will socialize with other dogs and will look forward to it every day. The only downside of a doggy daycare can be the price. Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. As English Bulldog Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes them unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities and produce high quality English Bulldogs for sale. Most are moderately friendly toward strangers. Although some can be aggressive with strange dogs, the breed is quite good with other pets. Upkeep The Bulldog appreciates a daily outing but cannot tolerate hot humid weather, which can be deadly. He should not be expected to jog or walk great distances, or to jump from any heights. Most Bulldogs cannot swim. Most Bulldogs wheeze and snore, and some drool. Coat care is minimal, but facial wrinkles and any folds around the tail should be cleaned daily. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarean deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms. History With the most distinctive mug in dogdom, the Bulldog has an equally distinctive history. Some Bulldogs were also set against bears for bear baiting, purely for entertainment. In , bull baiting was outlawed, and a new phase began for the Bulldog. By all rights, the breed should have become extinct, except that it had gained so many ardent admirers that they set out to rescue the Bulldog by selecting against ferocity while still maintaining—and often accentuating—its distinctive physical characteristics. Its tough steadfast persona led it to be identified as a national symbol of England. Its amiable clownish personality belies its appearance, and the Bulldog is a popular pet. Related Content.
