For years dogs have been over vaccinated in direct correlation to the incidences of cancers and other diseases. It is super important to realize that while we want to stress how important it is to socialize your puppy during their first 16 weeks of life, it is also equally important to learn about doing this safely so that your puppy is not exposed to the harmful pathogens that can cause them to become very sick, like parvo. Parvo is notorious for killing puppies and it sadly can be found in places like PetSmart, Petco, dog parks, vet offices and the pound. They will get the first round here before you pick them up. You will take them for the second round at weeks old and the third and final vaccine will be administered at weeks old. Review the vaccination guideline attached below from Dr. We discourage the leptospirosis vaccine strongly and want you to know that if this is administered, the health warranty on your puppy will be in jeopardy. We also encourage you to separate the rabies vaccine by 3 weeks from all other vaccines. Vaccinations are an important part of your puppy's preventative health care. Vaccinations should be given at 8, 11, 14 weeks or 7, 10, 13, and 16 weeks of age if vaccine. Some high risk areas may require an additional parvo booster at 24 weeks of age. Rabies vaccination is done at 4 to 6 months and is required to license your doodle with your county. We recommend the 3 year rabies vaccination schedule instead of the 1 year, only vaccinate if you dog is healthy and do not vaccinate and administer deworming on the same day. Once the initial series of puppy vaccinations and first annual vaccinations are completed, immunity from modified live virus MLV Most Vaccines persists for life or at least years. You can have titer testing done to see if you need to vaccinate again. An antibody titer test is a measure of the concentration of antibodies in the blood, as determined by a test involving repeatedly diluting a blood sample and exposing those dilutions to an antigen. The shorthand is to refer to all measurements of antibody concentration as titers. Three series of vaccinations may be given starting at weeks, given 4 weeks apart, to about 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age usually at 1 year 4 mo will provide a lifetime of immunity. Schultz controlled studies, he found that dogs maintain immunity to CDV, CPV-2, and CAV seven to nine years after vaccination, as proved by protection against virulent challenge. There is no confusion on this point. Schultz noted that the canine distemper, canine and feline parvovirus, and canine adenovirus core vaccines are all modified-live virus vaccines. In general, he said, modified-live virus vaccines provide longer-term immunity than killed virus vaccines do. Limit Exposure First and Foremost: Until your puppy has received all three sets of vaccinations, use caution and good sense in limiting exposure to the very real diseases that await new puppies. I cannot emphasize this enough. Make no Mistake: Parvo, Distemper and other infectious diseases can threaten the life of your puppy. They are deadly and they ARE out there. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, I strongly discourage Puppy Parks, Pet Stores or open public places where other dogs may have defecated. During a veterinary visit, do not allow your puppy on the floor. Keep him on your lap or in a carrier until he is put on the examining table. Your puppy will need to be vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. His vaccination program will continue with your veterinarian. Rabies inoculation is a single dose, usually at four months of age or older, with a repeat vaccination every one to three years. Check with your veterinary facility. Socialization is so important at this time- actually most critical between 4 and 16 weeks- but ongoing for the first year. Pay special attention to this time frame- this is when your puppy learns to grow to be a confident friendly adult. Careful, positive exposure now to all those things he will encounter in his adult life, from car rides to children of all ages to individuals outside of his family, and walks and cats too, and other unfamiliar dogs is essential for a happy well-adjusted dog. I want to mention that at 12 weeks of age, your puppy will experience an ultra-sensitive shy stage. Try not to introduce too much at this time- especially things that could be perceived as fearful, aggressive or over stimulating. You will be walking a fine line between proper socialization and health concerns. Stay vigilant and use good common sense when exposing your puppy to the world. Never, never use pet rest areas; Dog Parks and pet stores are a big no until all immunizations are complete. A darling little girl from a previous litter, Ivy, died 3 weeks after being with her new family. They were anxious for her to go to a dog park with friends despite the warnings and contracted Parvo. She died 36 hours later. So, please, take care while sharing your world — enjoy all the new learning experiences with your puppy while sensibly protecting him. Crate Training I encourage all new puppy owners to use a crate for their puppy. Buy a crate that will accommodate your puppy when he is fully grown. Choose one that has a divider to limit his space initially. This will help with housebreaking. I particularly like the wire crates that have 2 doors; one on the side and front for more placement options. Any time you cannot keep an eye on your puppy, putting him in his crate will keep him safe. Make going in the crate fun! I always give my dogs and puppies a small treat when entering their crate. Never use the crate as a form of punishment Whining: your puppy may or may not whine initially while in his crate. He has been exposed to a crate for several weeks and is familiar with going in and out at will. Do not give in; stay strong- they will learn that being in their crate is a part of everyday life and never a bad thing. Crating, both at night and when you are unable to supervise, is the safest option for your lively and inquisitive puppy. It will also protect your home, woodwork, rugs, table legs, chair rungs, sofa corners, tennis shoes, homework, book bags and anything else that your puppy is convinced is a toy and needs a good chew. Tip: Bitter Apple spray will help deter your puppy from choosing sprayed surfaces as chew toys. Housebreaking This is where your crate becomes an invaluable tool. No animal willingly soils his environment crate. Limiting his space helps to train your puppy to hold his business for longer periods of time. Your puppy will not know how to tell you he needs to go outside so I suggest taking him out every hour or so until he is older and able to go for longer periods of time. Key times to encourage your puppy to potty outside are: When he wakes up-in the morning and after a nap- after playing for an hour, after eating, and of course, hurry when you see him running in circles! Try to take him to the same spot each time and shower praises on your clever puppy when he goes. Remember, he will not know to go outside exclusively for many months. Positive praise for the job well done works. Punishment for accidents, and there will be accidents, may make your puppy fearful and confused with the whole process causing setbacks in the progress he has made. Note: Please remember to give this little puppy time to understand what it is that you expect from him. But most of all, kindness and patience should always temper all parts of the training process. Feeding 4 times a day until they are 4 months of age 3 times a day until they are 6 months of age 2 times a day after 6 months, even as an adult dog Your puppy has been eating Paw Tree chicken and oatmeal formulation. Paw Tree has several very good flavors for puppies. He should continue with this dry food for the first 12 months. At that time his long bone growth is complete. If you wish to change brands at this time, choose a good quality food mixing it in slowly with the Paw Tree until he is acclimated to his new food. Remember that any change in food and your puppy will have gastrointestinal upset which will interfere in housebreaking progress. Otherwise, puppies need to be fed times a day. Plenty of fresh water should be available all day, especially during meals. They are at risk and most prone to drowning. Many pups will leap before they look or simply fall in. Their inexperience, curiosity and fearlessness prompt them to explore but are usually unable to climb out of even small bodies of water. The steep sides of pools and hot tubs are especially dangerous. Your Doodle comes from two breeds that adore a swim and the water is just about the best thing there is, but until they are old enough to find their way out of it, supervision is a must. You will have to teach them where the pool steps or exits are located and help them learn how to navigate their way to safety. Biting When puppies play with one another and explore, they use their mouths; they naturally do the same when they interact with people. Biting in puppies is absolutely normal and therefore a challenge to convince your new pup that it is not acceptable behavior to treat his human as he would his littermate. Do not forget when teaching your pup not to bite, that nipping and mouthing is simply common puppy behavior and that the worst thing you can do is physically punish a pup for something that is natural for him. Discouraging this natural behavior can be trying at times however take solace in the fact that once puppies acquire their adult teeth this behavior disappears. Most normal puppy biting just goes away on its own. Labradoodles are not known for being mouthy dogs so keep in mind that this stage does have an end. Meanwhile, the best approach to this problem is the use of positive distraction and the encouragement and praise of acceptable behavior. Have a favorite toy at the ready and get those teeth into something other than your hand, toe or shoe. Blowing in their face will distract them as well. Building a good relationship on trust rather than fear will create a bond with your puppy that will last his entire lifetime. Your puppy only has you. Socializing your puppy is essential for them to learn crucial life skills and help them grow into a well-behaved and well-rounded adult. What Vaccines Do Puppies Need? Dogs need a wide range of puppy shots over the course of several months. So, what vaccines do puppies need? It affects both puppies and adult dogs. It can also be transmitted by shared water and food bowls, chew toys, and other equipment or surfaces. However, it can be prevented with proper immunizations. Many vets refer to the most important puppy shots as DHPP. This actually includes immunization for canine distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus, and canine parainfluenza. Some vets administer DHLPPC shots, which include all of the diseases we mentioned above and the additional leptospirosis and coronavirus vaccines. Canine Hepatitis The infectious canine hepatitis or adenovirus is an acute contagious disease. It affects the liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and the eyes. In severe cases, it can lead to liver failure and ultimately death. Most common symptoms of canine hepatitis are fever, excess thirst, vomiting, jaundice, loss of appetite, enlarged stomach, or liver pain. The most common symptoms of canine parainfluenza are dry or moist coughs, low fever, nasal discharge, lethargy and lack of energy, and loss of appetite. Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria. Most commonly, pups are infected from drinking water from lakes and rivers that are contaminated with infected urine, coming in contact with infected wildlife or farm animals, or from contact with rodents or other dogs. Common symptoms of leptospirosis in dogs include fever, stiffness and pain in muscles and joints, shivering, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, excessive thirst and urination, extreme dehydration, jaundice, difficulty breathing, or kidney failure. Parvovirus Parvovirus is one of the most dangerous, highly infectious diseases that often affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Parvo causes gastrointestinal complications like lethargy and depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, severe diarrhea, fever or hypothermia, severe weight loss, weakness, stomach pain, and rapid heartbeat. All of these symptoms lead to severe dehydration and affect the immune system. Canine coronavirus CCoV has been around for ages. The most common symptoms of canine coronavirus include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Bordetella Bronchiseptica Bordetella bronchiseptica is the leading cause of kennel cough. It can also be transmitted between dogs and cats. Lyme Disease Just like humans, dogs are at a risk of contracting Lyme disease through infected tick bites. The most common symptoms of Lyme disease are loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, lameness of limbs, swelling of joints, or overall stiffness, discomfort, and pain. It can also lead to kidney failure, or severe cardiac or neurological problems, which can prove to be fatal. Rabies Rabies is one of the most dangerous viral diseases. This disease attacks the brain and spinal cord, and if not treated quickly, it typically leads to death. The most common symptoms of rabies in dogs are anxiety, aggression, becoming restless and irritable, sometimes becoming overly excited or very uninterested, fever, difficulty swallowing, excessive drooling, stumbling, seizures, or paralysis. Puppies usually receive their first rabies shots around 3 months old, and they should be boosted as required by the law in your state. Heartworm Puppies and dogs can contract heartworm even just from a single mosquito bite. Heartworm spreads worms in the heart and pulmonary arteries, sometimes even to the liver and kidneys. As these worms can grow as long as 14 inches, they can block the arteries and injure the organs. However, your dog might start showing symptoms like lethargy, coughing, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing at later stages. When Should You Start Puppy Vaccinations Typically, puppies go to their forever homes with at least some vaccines that have already been administered at the shelter or kennel. Now your job is to continue with the puppy vaccine schedule. Whether you adopt your pup from a shelter or a breeder, you can usually count on their previous caretaker having administered at least some age-appropriate vaccinations. Typically, puppies receive their first puppy shots around 6 to 8 weeks of age. Always ask from the breeder or shelter about all the vaccines your pup has received and take this information to your vet. This way you can schedule the next shots in a timely manner. But how many sets of shots do puppies need? During their first weeks, puppies should receive 3 to 4 sets of shots, each of them around weeks apart. New Puppy Vaccination Schedule Chart So, as you can see, there are many vaccines that puppies should receive within their first year.

Most Australian Retrievers that you come across will be first-generation pups. Australian Retriever Traits and Temperament Since Australian Retriever breeders are still in the beginning stages of developing the breed as a whole, these designer mixes have not been bred for any specific characteristics. These dogs can possibly act like an even combination of both parents, closer to the happy-go-lucky Golden Retriever, or more like a hard-working Australian Shepherd. Here, we will discuss the traits and temperaments of both breeds since your Australian retriever puppy could inherit any combination of them. Australian Shepherds are working dogs, bred to herd and in rare instances protect livestock. They live for the work. Rarely does an Aussie have an off-switch — they are constantly on the go and are extremely high-energy dogs. Their loyalty to their owners is unparalleled yet they tend to be suspicious of outsiders — human and animal. They may have a medium to high prey drive. Australian Shepherds are excessively intelligent and can be a poor choice for a family dog if there is little mental stimulation in the home. Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, are family dogs through and through. They were bred to retrieve game while their owner hunts but their prey drive was pretty much erased. While they are high energy and easily excitable, they are also content to lounge on the couch and cuddle with someone. However, when the doorbell rings, they will be off like a shot. An even mix would be an extremely smart dog who is energetic, loyal, and easy to train. These dogs tend to inherit the intelligence of the Australian Shepherd and require a stimulating environment. Understand that both parent breeds are high energy and if your household does not meet these criteria, this may not be the dog breed for your family. Australian Retriever Again, an Australian Retriever can get any physical trait from either parent. They could get the cow brown eyes of the golden retriever or the bright blue that some Aussies present with. They could have shorter fur or longer fur, though either way, it is going to be thick and require heavy brushing. They will typically have feathering at the paws and ears. These dogs will also shed excessively, especially if they take after their double-coated Aussie parent. One positive thing that these mixed breed designer dogs could inherit from their Australian Shepherd parent is their coat color. While Golden Retrievers typically come in that tell-tale gold, or occasionally red, Australian Shepherds come in all sorts of fun colors: black, white, brown, grey, blue merle, and red merle. Since the Australian Retriever is not currently undergoing selective breeding for any specific color, they can have any combination of these. The body type of an Australian Retriever is just as variable as the color of its coat. They could exhibit the athletic body of the Golden or the deep-chested frame of the Aussie. They could end up with little bits of both. The one physical characteristic that they all seem to share, however, is a rounded snout rather than the slim, pointed face of the purebred Australian Shepherd. They will all have silky ears and long tails attributed to both parent breeds as well. Expected Lifespan of an Aussie and Golden Mix Mixing these two breeds does have at least one benefit. While Golden Retrievers are large breed dogs and often live a shorter life about years , Australian Shepherds are considered medium breed dogs and have a longer lease on life years. The resulting crossbreed gets an extended life expectancy of years. This could be due to the fact that mixed-breed dogs tend to live longer than their purebred counterparts. Mixed breed dogs are known to have longer life spans, fewer physical issues, and a significantly lower chance of contracting diseases. Please note, that this does not negate the need for regular veterinary care or vaccines. Diet Requirements for an Australian Retriever In terms of the dietary needs of an Australian Retriever, the recommendation of your veterinarian is best. If the veterinarian has no preference, choose a well-balanced diet. A large breed-specific diet may be needed. Sometimes, large breed dogs like Golden Retrievers grow a little bit too quickly. Speaking of bones and joints, it is not a bad idea to start a joint supplement such as glucosamine chondroitin when the Australian Retriever is young. Both Golden Retrievers and Australian Shepherds are prone to early onset arthritis as well as more severe arthritis as they age. The joint supplement will not prevent this from happening but it will slow the process down and strengthen the joints. Another food suggestion for an Australian Retriever would be a weight control or maintenance diet. Both of the parent breeds are prone to obesity due to their incessant reward-motivation. Golden retrievers are known to just love food. Sometimes, they receive one too many training treats or they have an insatiable appetite. The amount of food that an Australian Retriever should receive is relative to the weight of the dog. All dog food bags have a feeding guide on the back that lists the amount per weight. A dog of this size group should not be having more than 1. Double check the bag for correct feeding instructions. Golden Retrievers are known for eating quickly and indiscriminately. It would be a safe bet that an Australian Retriever would be just as happy to gobble down food. A slow feeder bowl is a must-have for quick eaters as it allows the dog to slow down and keep them from regurgitating everything they just swallowed. Energy Level and Exercise Requirements These dogs, regardless of which parent breed they take after, are going to be the canine equivalent of an Energizer bunny. Golden Retrievers are known for their exuberant energy and Australian Shepherds seem to be inexhaustible. Add these together and you will have a dog who needs constant physical stimulation. Australian Retrievers will require walks per day and that does not mean a mere walk around the block. They will benefit from hikes, off-leash running at the park, and other various activities like swimming. These dogs may not have an off-switch and will need constant movement. If your family does not meet that level of physical activity, this is not the dog for you. They inherit the intelligence and task-driven nature of an Aussie while also taking on the reward-motivation of a Golden. Obedience training should be a breeze and these dogs would do very well as service animals for active individuals. There will be some possible pit-falls in training, though. Australian Shepherds are known for separation anxiety and resource guarding which they could potentially pass on to the Aussie and Golden mix. With early intervention and behavior-specific training, these two major issues can be avoided. In addition to separation anxiety, an Australian Retriever may exhibit general anxiety or suspicion around other people. While they will be extremely loyal to their owner like Velcro , they will typically not exhibit the over-the-top friendly nature of their Golden Retriever parent. If your family is highly social with many guests coming in and out, this crossbreed may not be the right choice for your next puppy. Resource guarding is nothing to scoff at either. Dogs who exhibit resource guarding can easily move from food or toy guarding to full aggression towards people or other animals. Once they start, resource guarding and aggression are very difficult to eradicate. If you have small animals or children, this may not be the dog for you. Since this is such a new mixed breed of dog, the breeders have not yet begun to breed healthier dogs. Golden Retrievers and Australian Shepherds each come with a plethora of health concerns and the resulting crossbreed could possibly be at risk of all of them. The first main concern is cancer. Golden Retrievers are known for their predisposition to cancerous lumps and bumps. They can seemingly come out of nowhere and can be terribly aggressive. A second life-threatening and scary health concern is epilepsy from the Australian Shepherd. This parent breed is prone to seizures which can start at any point in their life and can vary in severity. Epilepsy is very close to another health problem that could be inherited from the Aussie parent — the MDR1 gene. This stands for Multi-Drug Resistance and there are a significant amount of Australian Shepherds who inherit this. This is a genetic disorder that causes extreme reactions to different drugs and chemicals such as certain antibiotics, flea and tick preventions, and a few anti-inflammatory drugs. These extreme reactions can range from skin irritation to seizures to spontaneous death. Australian Shepherds could also contribute certain eye problems to their mixed breed progeny. Several of these can result in damage to the retina and most of them will cause partial or complete blindness with age. Not all of these eye issues will be evident at birth but some will, such as distichiasis eyelashes that grow incorrectly on the eyelid inwards toward the cornea. One last tally in the column of the Australian Shepherd parent is the potential for allergies. Goldens are not as likely to present with food or environmental allergies but, thanks to the Aussie parent, an Australian Retriever has a much higher chance of presenting with allergies. This may happen early or later in life but it can result in skin issues and stomach upset. Allergies are an obnoxiously expensive condition for your dog to have. Now, we have discussed health concerns that could come from only one parent. What about the issues that are present in both breeds? Neither of the parent breeds are known for impeccable health records. An issue that these two parent breeds could pass on together is hypothyroidism. This is an imbalance where the production of thyroid hormone is too low. This disease affects the entire body. A dog will present with clinical signs like weight gain without appetite increase, slowed heart rate, skin and fur issues, and lethargy. Both the Golden Retriever and the Australian Shepherd are prone to hip dysplasia, as well. This irregular growth of the hip socket is obvious from the very beginning of puppyhood. Very quickly, hip dysplasia results in a tell-tale bow-legged stance and an odd gait. After a lifetime of this malformation in the joint, the concern for arthritis pops up. However, even if an Australian Retriever is lucky and skips the hip dysplasia, they still have the possibility of early onset arthritis as they age. Arthritis is painful and also requires daily anti-inflammatory medication to relieve said pain. One health concern that is not gradual is an ACL tear. This is not a hereditary issue but, due to the high energy level of an Australian Retriever and the possibility of bad knees, this mixed breed has a high risk for this injury. An ACL tear occurs when a dog tears a ligament in their knee after running and stopping too hard or landing a jump incorrectly. This injury requires expensive surgery, and months of bed rest which would be next to impossible for an Australian Retriever , and often reoccurs in the opposite knee later on. Again, mixed-breed dogs tend to have a longer, healthier lifespan than their purebred counterparts. It is still too early to determine whether an Australian Retriever would escape from any of these health issues unscathed. To be honest, the first specimens of this new crossbreed only just died in the past years. This breed will typically be found in shelters due to accidental breeding versus breeders intentionally awaiting a crossbreed litter. You will be hard-pressed to find a legitimate breeder rather than a puppy mill. Your best bet is to look through a rescue that is specific to Australian Shepherds or Golden Retrievers. Other Golden Retrievers Mixes. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. You will still need to brush them frequently to prevent knots and tangles in the long fur. I recommend a good slicker brush, such as the Hertzko self-cleaning brush from Amazon. This brush is excellent for getting rid of tangles and knots without hurting your doggo, as the fine bristles do not scratch. They also retract back into the brush to avoid getting damaged when not in use. Looking at the appearance of long-coated GSDs, one would assume they require a lot of washing. The lack of an undercoat makes it too risky to wet the topcoat as the dog can get cold. Double Coated or Single Coated? The only German Shepherds with a missing undercoat are the long-haired ones. In some rare instances, a short-haired German Shepherd might have a very thin undercoat and might be disqualified from the show ring for the same reason. You can afford to have a single-coated pet if you live in a warmer climate. With the absence of an undercoat, they are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. That said, you should not pay a premium price for an open coat since such a coat type is considered a fault. Open Coat at a Glance Technically has an undercoat; however, it is practically non-existent as it is extremely thin. Cannot enter dog shows. Long Coat German Shepherds with long coats do the best in winter time. The extra long hair helps this breed stay warm during the cold months. Long tufts of hair featured along their body such as their tail, ears, or legs, help to keep them warm as well. The outer coat is soft and might not have an undercoat at all. It just depends on each individual dog and their heritage. But like the short-haired GSD do have a double coat. German Shepherd Coat Colors When we think of the dog breed German Shepherd, the color we often first associate them with is black and tan. But in reality their are dozens of different colors they can be. There are also unique and rare patterns such as Panda German Shepherds, and uncommon colors you may have never thought a GSD could be such as red or pure white. Black and Tan This combination of colors is the most common on a German Shepherd. It is what we often see in photos and how we imagine them. These colors can often lighten as the dog gets older. When they are first born they often have more black covering their pelts. Adult German Shepherds have about an equal amount of both colors. The black is on the top of the back while also on their noses and parts of the face and ears. The brown is on the bottom and on their face, legs, neck and tail. In some cases they can even develop a grey strip that runs along their backs. This is more common with females. Their backsides are black while their stomach and feet are mostly silver. With this coloring there can be stripe like patterns that fade along their face or around their upper stomach. Their tails can be either both colors or mostly silver. Black Labradors or Newfoundlands are normally the dogs breeds we often think of when it comes to having all black fur. But a few German Shepherds can in fact have a full solid black pelt. This color breed is rare and you do not see them around very often. They also tend to be larger in size and therefore more powerful. Black and Red These two colors usually look the same on a German Shepherd as the black and tan does same pattern. Shades of red can be more of a rusty color, orange, or a deep red. Both these colors black and red are produced because of a dominant gene making the effect recessive. This color combination is often favored among breeders for its gorgeous coat shades. Their are multiple bi-colors variants. The first is Rich Bi-color which means they have another color along their legs and face. Black Bi-color Melanistic is when their paws and legs are brown. Sable Sable is more of a color pattern then an actual color. But Sable can come in many different shades including black, fawn, brown, silver, tan and about any other color you can think of that German Shepherd coats may have. Sable is a dominant color and is unique and beautiful. Sable often means that, although the rest of the hair is a different color, each fur will have a black tip. Although in some rare cases they can have black over their entire body. The most common colors for Sable are black, brown, and even silver. In rarer cases they can be red which are usually covered with a layer of black hairs. Panda This rare piebald pattern adorning a GSD is a true wonder. We do not see Panda German Shepherds often and when we do we may not realize what type of dog breed they are. It occurs when crossbreeding a black and tan dog with another dog of solid color. It is no surprise these dogs are popular and beloved. Blue These German Shepherds can at times remind us of wolves with their black-blue tinted fur, especially if they have longer fur. Their noses are usually bluish. They are quite beautiful and because of their blue fur usually have lighter colored eyes such as gold or amber. This blue color can also be called a shade of grey such as steel or silver. These dogs are very popular because of their lovely coats. Their can also be different color combinations associated with this color including Blue and Sable, Blue and Tan, and Blue and Black. Liver Similar to the Red German Shepherd this dog has a reddish pelt, almost strawberry blonde or light brown. A unique feature involving a Liver German Shepherd is their noses which tend to be pink or brown. This is unlike darker German Shepherds who have black noses. They can have color combinations such as Liver and White and Liver and Tan. This coloring is due to a recessive gene. This dog often has amber or golden eyes because of their lighter fur tones. Their bodies are predominantly black with a secondary accent color on the lower legs that can be tan, cream, gray or silver. All of these black areas, also called points, on the legs and toes should be richly pigmented. A dog is not considered to be bicolored unless it has these distinctive black markings and they can appear on both dual- and sable-patterned dogs. Sable The word sable means the color of black. The definition of a sable pattern refers to guard hairs being tipped with black. The more guard hairs and the longer the tipping, the darker the dog. Black sables are dogs with heavy tipping and less ground color. Agouti is a term that refers to the banding or grizzling of hair coloration that can be seen in varying amounts in the neck, shoulder, tail, croup and border markings in saddle-marked dogs. Some German Shepherds have so much grizzling in the black blanket or so much undercoat showing, that they are hard to distinguish from sables, and some sables that carry the partially-hidden, saddle-pattern recessive gene have so much of that recessive showing through that they look like washed-out saddles. Melanistic coloring refers to the masking of a color or pattern with black. Sable-colored German Shepherds are infamous for changing colors multiple times before reaching maturity. Liver, blue and Isabella are not recognized because of the color of their leathers; and the solid whites are omitted due to the absence of black in the hairs on top of their backs. Reverse Mask and Maskless German Shepherds The reverse mask aka wolf mask German shepherd is not a mix or hybrid, but rather a dog presenting a pattern that appears when both parents carry the gene for this coloring. These patterns date back to some of the earliest German Shepherd foundation dogs and still appear in certain lines, today. Rin-Tin-Tin was another reverse-mask without the stripe German Shepherd. The reverse mask can also present with or without the wolf stripe running down the nose. Some dogs are born with the wolf stripe but it fades with maturity—while others maintain the stripe. In this day and age buying a puppy essentially sight unseen can be scary and I realize that so in an attempt to make everyone comfortable with the process I take as many pictures and videos of the puppies as possible.
