It is very much a family and extended ohana endeavor when babies are here! As a dog trainer, behaviorist, breeder, and most recently the creator of Pono Puppy Method on Maui, I have witnessed first-hand the need and desire families have for high-quality Labrador Retrievers in the state. My background is in raising service dog puppies has grown into a love for the willing, loyal, and highly trainable Labrador spirit. Not finding what we were looking for in Hawaii, we imported our foundation bitch, Sandy, from Australia. Our stud dogs reside in Portland, Oregon and we maintain a close relationship with the breeder there, ensuring that we breed to the healthiest males with the laid-back temperaments and personalities we are seeking. All of our studs are champion show dogs and have produced many amazing litters. While you may not be seeking a dog for the show ring, you have the assurance that he will have the qualities that true English Labradors should have, including health, temperament, and conformation. It is our mission to provide healthy, well-mannered, quality Labradors to families in our beautiful island state. She has never met a dog or human that she doesn't love, and vice versa! She is clever, smart, and oh so sweet. The perfect Labrador temperament. She has had 2 beautiful litters so far. Her kids have gone on to become service dogs, preschool nanny dogs, military family pets, Mahi Pono Farm worker support dog, and even truffle hunters! Such versatility. Fully health tested and clear for breed related health problems. Tikka has the perfect Labrador temperament, build, and disposition. She has "mothered" kittens, chickens, and ducks! We are looking forward to her becoming a mama to her own puppies this fall. Embark DNA tested and clear. Hips and elbows pending tikka Always happy, just like her mama Sandy. Just look at that smile! I see therapy dog potential for sure. She is very intuitive and attentive to her humans. Standing at stud at Devonshire Labradors Huck Proven sire, champion in the show ring and a perfect family companion. Huck passes on his laid back, loving personality to his offspring and has sired many successful service dogs. He is the epitome of man's or woman's best friend. He has spent many months each year aboard a fishing boat in Alaska, as a hunting companion, and as the perfect family pet in his Maui home. This is the temperament you want from your Labrador! Playtime is structured and scheduled throughout the day with plenty of breaks for napping, a puppy's favorite pastime. Video Almost perfect manners at 7 weeks! These puppies have learned to volunteer good manners, aka "sit", for attention, meals, and treats. They are not being cued or commanded to do anything. The guest simply waits for manners, then rewards with attention. The right answer is always "sit". Good job, Fruit Basket Litter, .Finding their feet Flooring and footing is specially designed for young pups to avoid slipping and sliding. Learning to walk is difficult enough so we make sure they have the most success early on. Playtime grows with the puppies As the pups develop, they need more challenges. A favorite is always the slide. It not only challenges the body, but the brain and confidence levels, as well. Opportunities like this build enrichment seeking pups, ready to take on the world! Socialization Socialization Socialization We use the developmentally, scientifically proven approach of the Pono Puppy Method. This is an early enrichment program that gives the puppies a head start in their development socially, physically, and emotionally. This helps our puppies grow up confident, balanced, and ready to take on any endeavor their human family presents to them. Pups are exposed to sounds, sights, smells, humans of all sizes, and as many Auntie and Uncle dogs of varying types as we can recruit along with many other enriching activities stimuli. We even teach the puppies to swim and enjoy the water! Puppies will have had at least 3 car rides, some exposure to the leash and collar, and will have learned to volunteer good manners. Puppies have their very own room in our house and will be allowed to explore the living spaces when they become mobile. They are raised as part of the family, not in outdoor kennels. We believe that this is important to help prepare them for life as family members in their new homes. Further, all have good clearances for hips and elbows and eyes through OFA. Puppies will go home with their first sets of shots at 8 weeks of age and will have been wormed regularly as infants. Pups are weaned naturally with goat's milk mush made with quality puppy kibble, goat's milk, and a regular dose of prebiotic. Mama does a great job of letting pups know when she is no longer willing to nurse and we allow her to dry up naturally. Pups will be fully weaned onto a high quality puppy kibble well before they go home. Training open door policy open door policy We literally start training as soon as puppies can hear. We introduce sounds and help build their startle response along with desensitizing them to normal household sounds like the vacuum cleaner. I introduce the clicker as soon as I notice that the pups are operant, usually around 3 weeks. At that time, they learn to offer manners manding in exchange for treats and attention. Pups will be comfortable sleeping in and volunteering time in crates. However, you will need to expand on this training once they are away from the rest of the litter in your home. I highly encourage you to seek out more information and videos of these processes on the Pono Puppy Method website www. Typically, our girls are more than happy to let visitors see and hold her pups from very early on, but only for a short time. Mama sets the limit here and we listen to her. Now that you know some of the best German Shepherd breeders in New Jersey, you must be wondering how much you will need to pay for a good puppy from a reputable breeder. The price of the German Shepherd Puppy can vary depending on several factors, including the breeder, the location, lineage, and their purpose in life. If you are getting a dog from a high-end breeder with a prestigious line of German Shepherds, you will of course need to pay a much higher price. As this dog breed is extremely intelligent and useful in many disciplines of working life, they are not usually purchased as pets, so you will have to expect to pay a little bit more, as their price increases because of this. Also, the price of a puppy will significantly rise if the breeder has done all the health tests and has each certificate to prove this. These dogs are less likely to suffer from any health conditions later in life, and are therefore, much more expensive. On the other hand, if you are looking to buy a service or police dog, then you can expect to pay a lot. Even though they can be really pricey, these dogs are worth it, believe me — their intelligence, capabilities, great temperament, and companionship make up for the money invested. We have done this research and compiled all this important information in order to help you choose a perfect breeder that will provide you with the best possible puppy. We hate to see our readers regret their decision of getting a puppy, just because they ran into a breeder that does not care about his dogs and clients. A true lover of dogs will never let their pups end up with just anyone, but will make sure that the potential buyer actually loves owning dogs and has the appropriate conditions for raising such a dog. On the other hand, a reputable breeder will also make sure that all his puppy parents are in perfect health, so the future puppies will also be healthy and happy. These are just some of the things you need to be careful of when looking for a German Shepherd breeder. Once you have that little fur pup with you at home, I am sure that you will forget all the stress and time spent in the process of searching for the right one, and he or she will bring light and happiness into your life. She has been creating content for print and online outlets for nearly two decades. This medical condition is characterized by a dog's eyelid or eyelids rolling outward. While it is not always a serious ailment that impacts your dog's eye function, it is something to learn more about and connect with your veterinarian to see how to best handle this condition with your pup. What Is Ectropion in Dogs? Ectropion is the opposite of entropion. In cases of genetic ectropion, it is often identified when the dog is still a puppy. But keep in mind that ectropion can also develop secondary to trauma to your dog's eye, especially if there is a laceration of the lower eyelid that does not heal correctly, McKinnon says. This can happen to a dog at any age. What Are the Symptoms of Ectropion in Dogs? If you notice that your dog's eyelids are sagging or rolling outward, they may have ectropion. Another thing to look for, according to McKinnon, would be discharge that builds up around their eyes. Because the eyelid is exposed, it may appear more red than usual as well because the openness of the eyelid exposes the ocular tissues, including the cornea and conjunctiva, to the environment. The only treatment for serious cases of ectropion is surgery, McKinnon says. An ocular lubricant may be recommended to cushion the eye tissues from any environmental debris in those breeds where ectropion is a desirable trait and blink function is normal," McKinnon says. You'll want to have your vet check your pooch's eyes twice a year to ensure the condition is not becoming more serious. Unfortunately, ectropion is actually a sought-after trait in many commonly affected breeds. It creates a diamond-shaped eye, which gives the dog a devoted and sad expression. This leads some people to breed specifically for ectropion. Your pet does not need to be sedated. In fact, pets should be awake for the veterinarian to appropriately determine their natural eyelid conformation, or shape. Treatment for Dog Ectropion Surgery is the only effective way to treat ectropion in dogs. This involves primarily shortening and tightening the eyelid. Recovery and Management of Dog Ectropion Recovery from ectropion surgery is rapid. Eyelid swelling will peak approximately 24 hours following surgery and can take two to four weeks to completely resolve. Dogs will be required to wear an Elizabethan collar following surgery to protect the sutures around their eyes. Topical eye medications may be prescribed after surgery depending on possible underlying corneal or lacrimal disease s. Oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and analgesics are often recommended after surgery as well. Sutures from ectropion surgery are removed 14 days after surgery, and the Elizabethan collar can be removed a few days after that. While surgical complications from ectropion surgery are rare, they can include: Under-correction of the eyelid will not resolve the underlying problem and will then require additional surgeries. Overcorrection of the eyelid can actually result in the formation of entropion when the eyelid grows inward. It causes trauma to the cornea. Self-trauma to the incision site usually occurs if the Elizabethan collar is removed too soon after surgery. Acquired cases of ectropion can occur when a dog has a facial injury and sustains neurological damage. I grew up in Tampa watching my father Vincent J. Naimoli start the Major League Baseball expansion.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? Eye infections can result from the exposure of the lower conjunctiva. Diagnosis of ectropion In most cases the condition can be confirmed by visual examination. A thorough examination of the eyelids is important since ectropion can often occur in conjunction with entropion Click here to learn about entropion. Treatment of ectropion Ectropion is relatively well tolerated unless it is severe and surgical repair can generally be avoided by treating inflammation with a variety of eye drops. Most cases of ectropion that are not severe will require little if any intervention other than topical drops and ointments. Extremely severe cases of ectropion will not improve without surgical repair. There are several surgical procedures that may be used to reduce ectropion. Prevention of ectropion Because of the hereditary aspect of ectropion, affected dogs will likely transmit the defect. Affected dogs should probably not be bred. Acquired cases are generally associated with traumatic injury. The best way to avoid that is to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Click here to learn why you may be using the wrong leash. Prognosis of ectropion In all but the most severely affected cases the prognosis is quite good. The condition is generally well tolerated and in most cases will respond to simple medical care. Surgical correction may be required in severe cases. Though the surgery is relatively simple it can be very delicate and requires an experienced surgeon. Should I be concerned? Generally, the best ways to treat underlying conditions and change the diet or lifestyle are to encourage muscle development. If your dog is truly too skinny, you can help them gain a bit of weight relatively easily, but if you have a naturally petite dog, you make your pup overweight by altering it. Of course, there will be variance in size, but on average, you can expect your male dog to be between 20 and 28 pounds, while a female is usually a bit lighter at 17 to 26 pounds. Is Being Underweight Always Bad? Sometimes, you have a particularly tiny dog for the breed. It is probably fine if your dog is proportionately small, though your vet will confirm this. How to Know if My Bulldog is too Skinny: One of the easiest ways to tell if your Frenchie is too skinny is to look at their body type. Look down on your pup from above. Do you see their ribs protruding? Visible ribs are a telltale sign of being underweight. Is your dog slowing down due to a lack of energy? Is your dog not toileting enough? These are signs that there may be a problem that you will need to address. If your dog is too skinny, it is probably a cause. You could cause skinniness, or it could be caused by a medical condition that will need treatment. Thankfully, most causes can be treated. Not Eating Enough: The classic reason for being underweight is not feeding your dog enough. Or, your pup may not be eating enough for some reason, such as pain or a medical condition, even if you are providing the right amount of food. Feeding the Wrong Food: The food you feed may be inappropriate. If you feed something your dog is intolerant to, you can cause all sorts of issues. Worms or Other Parasites: Worms or other parasites can also cause weight loss and an inability to put any weight on. However, not all parasite areas are visible. A vet should be able to diagnose parasites if they are present. Other Medical Conditions: Other medical conditions can lead to weight loss and being underweight. Cancer, kidney problems, heart disease, allergies, and even anxiety may also cause problems with weight loss or putting weight on for your pup. If you notice these signs, you probably should reach out to the vet for a thorough evaluation. Are They Eating Regularly? Irregular eating habits or suddenly changing habits usually shows that there is a problem. Too much water could imply diabetes, while not enough could be related to kidney issues. Problems with drinking can become quite serious if left unchecked. Are There Toilet Issues? Going too much and having runny stools implies that their stomach cannot handle the food consumed. You may even notice worms in the stool. How is Their Energy? You should not hesitate to go to the vet if you notice that your pup struggles to find the energy for normal daily habits. Are There Any Other Concerns? Suppose you want to fatten up your Frenchie. In that case, you have three primary options: You can put on fat and build muscle, or you can treat an underlying condition or cause that is causing weight loss in the first place. How you do each is a bit different. However, both options will increase calorie content, so fat or muscle can be developed. Building Muscle: Building muscle is done just like it is in people. And, by exercising, you encourage the muscles to develop as well. While it might seem counterintuitive to exercise to help add weight, Frenchies are meant to be stocky and muscular. Gaining Fat: If your dog is truly underweight or too skinny, you may need to up the fat content on its body. Gaining fat is as simple as upping calories. Stick to high-quality foods with high-quality ingredients. Ideally, all dogs would be fed a raw, whole food diet, but this is expensive and time-consuming. If you are feeding kibble, make sure that you pick those that have real meat as the primary ingredients and avoid filler ingredients. Treat Underlying Conditions: Finally, if you want your dog to gain weight, you must ensure no underlying causes to keep weight off. Ensure your dog gets a clean bill of health, and putting on weight should be as simple as upping food intake and adding extra calories. Before you head off to start fattening up your dog, there are a few more things to consider. Adults require food twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Puppies under the age of 8 months generally eat as much as six times daily. Your Frenchie should be eating between 25 and 35 calories per pound of body weight per day to stay healthy. It could be that your dog is naturally petite or is naturally larger than average. Frenchies are small dogs, so even a few pounds of weight change can make a big difference. At the end of the day, a healthy weight will help your pup live a happier, longer life and is worth the effort. This is because they are descendants of the Molossus dog, which were muscular as well. You also want to ensure their food is high protein, as this will help nourish and build healthy muscle. If they need some extra weight, you can feed them a little extra until they are at their ideal weight. Otherwise, they will get obese, and French Bulldogs cannot handle extra weight very well. French Bulldogs are dogs that will eat the food that is laid out for them. They will eat, even to the point of getting sick, as they like their food. You also want to avoid feeding them food with any unnecessary grains. Furthermore, you want to avoid foods with corn and soy ingredients, as most dogs end up being allergic to these foods. Feed Your French Bulldog Occasional, High Protein Treats Rather than feeding your Frenchie store bought treats, you can try feeding them some high protein treats that you make at home. French Bulldogs are able to eat eggs, which are low in calories and high in protein and other great nutrients. You can also let them have some plain yogurt as a little treat. You can even opt for some plain, cooked chicken without any bones in it as a treat. Most dry dog foods will have recommendations on their packaging that advise how much of that particular food you should feed your dog based on their age and current weight. It might also advise how much to feed them to help them gain or lose weight. The typical healthy weight range for a male French Bulldog is between 20 and 28 pounds, while for a female, the range is between 16 and 24 pounds. It can be a little difficult to keep your French Bulldog active, but it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to keep up a consistent effort to do so. For starters, they should be going for walks every day. Similarly, your Frenchie may not be a big fan of rain or snow. If you can find them sweaters or boots, and be sure to pack water on a hot day, it may help them get used to walking in inclement weather. If you are able to break up their walking time into a few shorter walks every day, that would be best. Furthermore, it allows you to bond with your Frenchie. Consider toys like rope toys that you can encourage your Frenchie to pull on and wrestle around with. Throwing balls around, even balls that have little holes for treats, will have them running around your home excitedly, which will be good enough exercise to help them gain muscle. It could also be nice to even let them out in the yard and have a couple of outdoor toys to play with so they can be active outside without having to go on a walk all the time. The only reason you should be trying to bulk up your Frenchie is to ensure they are as healthy and happy as possible. Thus, trying to push them to bulk up more and more will be unhealthy. If you are able to see your French Bulldogs ribs when you look at their midsection, you will know they are underweight. Recap How to Bulk up French your Bulldog is a fairly easy process, but you must respect that their genetics and their naturally small stature will only let them bulk up so much. Ensuring they get exercise and fun play time and a healthy diet is always the best course of action to support a long and healthy life for your Frenchie. Recent Posts. July 4, Porky Paws How to make French bulldog muscular? How to get your French bulldog into shape There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to make a French bulldog muscular will vary depending on the individual dog's genes, diet, and exercise routine. However, following a few simple guidelines should help to get your French bulldog into shape. First and foremost, it is important to ensure that your French bulldog is eating a healthy diet that is rich in protein. Dogs need protein to build muscle, and a diet that is deficient in protein will not be conducive to muscle growth. In addition, it is important to make sure that your French bulldog is getting enough exercise. A minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day is recommended, although more exercise is always better. Finally, you may want to consider supplementing your French bulldog's diet with some muscle-building supplements. These supplements are not essential, but they can help to give your dog an extra edge in terms of muscle growth. Some popular muscle-building supplements for dogs include whey protein, creatine, and BCAAs. There are a few things that you can do to help your Frenchie become more muscular. First, make sure that the dog is getting enough exercise. A good workout will help to tone the muscles and increase strength. Additionally, you can give your dog a diet that is high in protein. This will help to build muscle mass. Finally, you can also consider purchasing a weight vest for your Frenchie to wear. This will add some extra resistance and help the dog to tone its muscles even more. Tips for feeding a muscular French bulldog One question that is often asked by French bulldog owners is how to make their pet more muscular. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, there are a few tips that can help. The most important thing to remember when trying to make your French bulldog more muscular is that diet is key. You should feed your dog a high-quality diet that is specifically designed for dogs. A good exercise routine will help your dog to tone his muscles and build strength. If you follow these tips, you should see a noticeable difference in your French bulldog's muscle mass in no time. How to correct common weight problems in French bulldogs Like any dog, French bulldogs need exercise and a balanced diet to stay healthy and muscular. However, because of their unique build and body type, French bulldogs can be prone to weight problems. Here are some tips on how to help your French bulldog stay muscular and at a healthy weight: 1. Make sure your French bulldog gets plenty of exercise. A good rule of thumb is at least one hour per day. Feed your French bulldog a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein. Avoid feeding your French bulldog too many high-calorie treats. If your French bulldog is overweight, gradually reduce their calorie intake until they reach a healthy weight. Encourage your French bulldog to play and run around as much as possible. How to make sure your French bulldog is getting enough protein The first step to making your French bulldog muscular is ensuring that he or she is getting enough protein in their diet. You can give your Frenchie a high-quality protein source like meat, eggs, or fish, or you can give them a high-quality protein supplement. The second step to making your French bulldog muscular is to make sure they are getting enough exercise. French bulldogs need around minutes of exercise per day in order to stay healthy and maintain their muscle mass. You can give your Frenchie a variety of exercises to keep them healthy and muscular, such as playing fetch, going for walks, or playing in the yard. If you follow these two simple steps, your French bulldog will be on their way to becoming a muscular powerhouse! Keep in mind that you should never just change their diet or increase the portion before you consult a vet. Their diet should include meat sources such as chicken, turkey, beef, rabbits, duck, or lamb. You should also add vegetables to every meal to help them stay healthy such as add peas, carrots, and green beans. If your Frenchie has a sensitive stomach, you need to get them something that will not upset their stomach. You can learn more about my recommended foods for Frenchies with Sensitive stomachs in this guide , but here is a quick recommendation that will be good with most Frenchies. There is also a wet formula that is done especially for dogs who like to eat food with a soft texture. Check Latest Price More Exercise You may think that getting too much exercise is the only way that exercise could be making your Frenchie too skinny , but getting too little exercise can also, surprisingly, cause your Frenchie to be quite skinny. If your French Bulldog is not getting enough exercise, then this could be one of the reasons why they are too skinny. Exercise will help your dog build muscle mass and also help to boost its metabolism. Start making a schedule for their walks and playtime, and try to stick to this schedule as much as possible. You can involve them in activities and exercises such as swimming and running. You can also try some weight exercises such as weight vest exercises or weight dragging and pulling exercises. Find the Underlying Cause If you cannot find a reason why your French Bulldog is too skinny, then it is best to take them to the vet to perform some tests and determine if there is an underlying health condition that is causing your dog to be too skinny. Here are some of the conditions that can cause your dog to lose weight: Cancer. Exercises such as this one can also help tire a high-energy French Bulldog. If you are using strength and muscle training on your French Bulldog, you must consult with a veterinarian first. If your French Bulldog is older, injured, or out of shape, it might be necessary to begin a muscle-building program for them. In the event of muscle loss, your French Bulldog loses strength, its immune system is weakened, and its recovery time from illness or injury is slowed. An older Frenchie, an injured Frenchie, or a Frenchie who is sedentary is more likely to experience muscle loss. How to make your French Bulldog gain muscle? Exercise to build muscle in dogs Make sure you start slowly and gradually increase the resistance and volume while exercising your dog. The best way to avoid injury is to follow this advice. Exercise should also be enjoyable for your French Bulldog. Before starting these exercises, a warmup should be performed with your French Bulldog. During a warmup, you might walk slowly for five to ten minutes before increasing the speed. You might also play fetch or something similar to warm up. This will accelerate the heart rate and increase blood flow to the muscles, preventing injury to a cold muscle. It is also a serious dog sport, believe it or not. You might want to start your Frenchie by dragging a small amount of weight ten to twenty meters. Repeat after 2 minutes of rest. When conditioning your French Bulldog, starting slowly and gradually increasing the weight and repetitions should be a rule of thumb. Several other options for pulling conditioning, such as pulling a skateboard or a sled, or pulling a sled or scooter, are available. A parachute can even attach to a weight vest for extra resistance—link to Weighted Harness. Tug of war Crouch and pull back while they use their strength against you. Most dogs enjoy playing this classic game. Some dog trainers oppose this game because they encourage dominant behavior. Swimming It is one of the best exercises you can give your French Bulldog if you want to keep him in shape. The equivalent of 10 minutes of dog swimming is the equivalent of 1 hour of walking. The whole body is worked, and resistance is provided, especially the front end, which does not require much work from walking alone. With the support from the water, your Frenchies joints and bones will be relieved, and it is also low impact, therefore suitable. An attached lure or toy hangs from a tree branch or pole attached to a spring. Little French Dog is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. Half of these amino acids are manufactured by your Frenchie, but the remaining amino acids must be obtained through diet. It is possible to have a weakened immune system due to a lack of essential amino acids. In addition to low energy, your French Bulldog may have poor skin and coat conditions, and injuries and wounds may take longer to heal. Ideally, you will want to feed your French Bulldog high-quality proteins, meaning those that are easily digestible and absorbable. This is the case for poultry, such as chicken. The topic of dog food can be a contentious one. If feeding a premium kibble, make sure that meat is listed as the first ingredient. Corn or wheat are common ingredients in many foods, which act as fillers. Your French Bulldog would not receive the energy they need because it has very little nutritional value. A very popular diet is the raw meat diet. However, there is no guarantee that it contains the right proportion of protein. Raw meat sometimes contains a high-fat content. In and of itself, fat is not necessarily harmful. Dogs can use this as a source of fuel provided they are active. The low-fat content of chicken makes it an ideal source of protein for your French Bulldog. Rest and Recovery It is important to provide your French Bulldog with ample recovery time between exercise sessions so that you do not overwork your Frenchie. Strength and muscle-building sessions should be limited to three times per week to ensure that your French Bulldog gets adequate recovery time. It is advisable to wait one day between sessions and to go for a light walk. They also suffer from more inflammation as they get older. Age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia. Creating a dog strength training routine that prevents muscle loss is great for building muscle in older dogs. The strength training routine should include the following: Exercises such as swimming are great for joint-friendly resistance training. Playing Frisbee, fetch, and tug-of-war are great ways to be active The cross-training exercise is an energetic and fun cardiovascular workout Walking for 30 minutes a day Regain Muscle After Injury, Surgery, or Illness Muscle atrophy is a natural consequence of illness, surgery, and injury. Pain, disuse, and weight transfer all contribute to muscles losing strength. It is also possible for dogs to suffer from cachexia, a condition in which muscle loss occurs due to heart failure, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. You can help your Frenchie recover faster and regain mobility by incorporating a muscle-building routine. Be Skeptical of Supplements Many people are still unsure about dog supplements. Do they contain any real health benefits? If your dog is unfit, you would not be alone in considering buying something to help it reach its ideal form. According to some experts, many supplements can be harmful to dogs, even though some might work. Thus, caution is advised. The best food and an exercise regime can help your dog see results, but it still takes time to see an impact. You should not give up on your French Bulldog just because it continues to resemble the runt of the litter instead of the leader of the pack! Take before and after pictures to be able to evaluate their progress. Conclusion Exercises that build muscle and improve strength are beneficial to all dogs. Older French Bulldogs with muscle wasting or Frenchies competing in canine sports to build their conditioning are included. For muscles to grow and repair, a quality diet that includes high protein levels and rest, and recovery is crucial. So simply take the age of your Bulldog in weeks and draw a vertical line. Where it intersects the graph line is the average weight of a French Bulldog at that time. Also, these are the averages for both a male and a female. As far as dimensions, they will typically be between 27 and 31 cm in height. Note that typically, the male Frenchie is a little heavier than females. The first few days and weeks will not be something you have a lot of control of. After this point, the responsibility of her falls squarely on your shoulders and you need to ensure she is provided with a wholesome diet. Generally speaking though, your French Bulldog should have the below included in her diet: Carbs — To ensure a decent blood sugar level the diet of your dog should be quite low in carbs. Fat — Canola oil, chicken fat and flaxseed are a great source of fat. The food that you provide your French Bulldog whilst they are still growing will have an impact on their growth rate. There is more to it than that though. I mentioned earlier that a lot rides on those first few days and weeks and also genetics. Did you see how big the mother and father were? Are they drinking? Do they appear active and full of energy? Your Frenchie will carry on growing up to around a year it does vary a bit. There are other health complications related to an overweight French Bulldog. They are more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes for instance. Is Your French Bulldog Overweight? There are some ways to determine whether your French Bulldog is overweight: They may look more podgy than muscularly defined. A good idea is to take photos which most people do these days and compare month on month. The French Bulldog already has problems with its breathing and being overweight will not help this. If, after some exercise, you notice their breathing is labored then it is a sign that they may be overweight. Other people have commented that an over-weight Frenchie will take less care in itself. Is Your French Bulldog Underweight? This is less common with this breed but it is something to look for. Again, comparing their photos against last month, etc. Look at their body, can you see their rib cage? Unfortunately, an underweight Frenchie can be a symptom of something more serious, such as a kidney-related disease. Do you mean you want them physically bigger or more muscular? There is nothing you can do about the skeletal size of your French Bulldog. The outcome is almost set by the time they come out of their mother. You must be very careful not to over-feed the Frenchie. Being overweight will cause problems with their already complicated breathing in hotter weather. Any Other Reasons? Did you check the history of their mother and father? There are some types of French Bulldog that are thinner than others. For instance, a lot of Russian imported dogs do have a much thinner look and will always look like this, whatever you do. Whereas, American French Bulldogs have more of a pug-like look to them. Should I Contact My Vet? However, a common mistake a lot of people make is not providing the whole picture to their vet and actually ending up misleading them. Make a diary of both their food intake and their exercise routine. Also, take frequent photos of them. It will give you all the information you could ever want about this rather unique breed! Along with a balanced diet, there are also certain supplements and activities that can help to add muscle bulk to your pet. Muscle-Building Diet The most important part of bulking up your pup is ensuring that their diet is carefully managed. Start by making sure your pup is eating a balanced diet that includes a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Look for a good quality dry kibble that contains the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your pup needs to stay healthy and strong. This kind of physical activity can help to improve their overall strength and muscle tone. Some of the most common supplements include creatine, which helps to increase energy and endurance; and whey protein, which assists with the growth and repair of muscles. Look for a supplement that meets the nutritional needs of your pup and consult with your veterinarian to ensure that it is safe for your pup. A good rule of thumb is to start out with low intensity exercise and gradually increase the intensity as your pup gains strength and endurance. In conclusion, with the right diet and exercise program, along with the use of supplements, your French Bulldog puppy can grow up to be a strong and healthy pooch with plenty of muscle mass and energy. To ensure that your pup is healthy and that they stay that way, be sure to consult with a professional before taking on any intensive exercise program or supplement routine. With the right approach, your pup can continue to thrive and stay in top condition for years to come. Related Info And Products:. Contact Welcome Located in New Hampshire, we are a small family-owned kennel and have been breeding Labrador Retrievers for over 20 years. Our kids are now grown and gone and we have migrated back north to scenic Warner, New Hampshire to build our forever spot here for ourselves and the dogs. We raise sound English-style Labrador Retrievers. Before we consider a dog as breeding or stud quality, they are judged for temperament and conformation and must pass OFA hip and elbow clearances and eye clearances. Our Labradors are part of our family; we raise our puppies in our custom whelping room that is sanitary and climate-controlled. The room has gentle music playing and a bit of traffic every once in a while to show off the new additions when it is safe for visiting. We do our best to place our puppies in a home that best suits each puppy by conducting temperament screening and aptitude tests. We spend an enormous amount of time with these puppies and have had great success in evaluating the "right fit" of puppy to family. Goals My goal as a breeder is to produce a sound quality Labrador Retriever as close to the AKC standard to my liking. Every breeder has a preference to coat, size, movement, attitude, face and tail. The most important thing to remember in breeding is to keep in mind the purpose of the dog and ensure that they are physically able to get the job done for which they were bred. Our Boys. Because of their short snouts, they often experience a lot of breathing problems, though those wrinkled faces are absolutely adorable. Vote up the cutest, sweetest Pug pictures below. These cute Pugs are known especially for their muscular bodies and vibrant personalities. For that reason, a pug puppy makes a great pet for the whole family. Big Eyes. By Manish Pandey Newsbeat reporter A new study suggests that pugs face such serious health conditions they can "no longer be considered a typical dog from a health perspective. The study compared the health of 4, pugs and 21, non-pugs. UK pugs are almost twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually, compared with other dogs. Brachycephalic, or "brachy" dogs - like pugs, bulldogs or boxers - are bred for their distinctive looks. In recent years, pugs have increased in popularity, with a five-fold increase in Kennel Club registrations of pugs from .Health issues Overall, pugs were found to be around 1. The findings do not "come as a surprise" to Dr Myfanwy Hill, a veterinary surgeon who works at the University of Cambridge. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Researchers argue that the health of the dog should be prioritised over people's desire to own one That causes a lot of the problems pugs face - including issues with breathing, skin and their back. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome - a breathing issue - was the disorder with the highest risk in pugs, with the designer breed almost 54 times more likely to have the condition. Dr Hill says the narrow nostrils pugs have, is like "trying to breathe through a really narrow straw" and makes simple things like breathing "much harder work". She adds the "common image we have of pugs" where they're smiling and have their tongue sticking out, looking like they're panting, is not the "joyful" image we may think. Dr Hill says "they have more skin than they need for the size of their face", which can cause skin infections to occur, creating soreness and itchiness. And the "attractive tail" that people like actually shows a "malformed vertebra" which can result in more slipped discs. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Even if it looks cute, an oversized tongue can cause problems The research also showed pugs have a reduced risk of some conditions, including heart murmur, aggression and wounds. But researchers suggest their findings indicate many pugs may suffer from seriously compromised health and welfare. He says it's important to "focus on the health of the dog rather than the whims of the owner when we are choosing what type of dog to own". Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Experts say their body shape must shift towards a more moderate, and less extreme, shape if health and welfare issues for pugs in the UK are to improve What can you do? Dr Hill says people who buy dogs do so "in good faith" and it's important "not to attribute blame". But there are things that can be done for existing pug owners - like looking out for symptoms of breathing difficulties, such as excessive panting or lots of noise during breathing. In summer months, pugs are more at risk of heat-related problems because they have less airway - so need to be kept cool, she says. And while the "barrel-shaped bodies are really cute" - weight management is important because "an overweight short face dog like a pug is at even greater risk". And we need to make sure that they live long, happy and healthy lives," Dr Hill adds. Listen to Newsbeat live at and weekdays - or listen back here. Related Topics. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Cheyletiella Dermatitis Walking Dandruff : This is a skin condition that is caused by a small mite. If you see heavy dandruff, especially down the middle of the back, contact your vet. The mites that cause this condition are contagious, which means all pets in the household need to treated. A diagnosis of PDE can only be made by testing the brain tissue of the dog after it dies. PDE usually affects young dogs, causing them to seizure, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. This can happen in a few days or weeks. They are prone to a condition called idiopathic epilepsy : seizures for no known reason. If your Pug has seizures, take him to your vet to determine what treatment is appropriate. Nerve Degeneration : Older Pugs that drag their rear, stagger, have trouble jumping up or down, or become incontinent may be suffering from nerve degeneration. Since their front legs often remain strong, some owners buy carts to help their Pugs get around, and the veterinarian might be able to prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms. If your Pug squints or the eyes look red and tear excessively, contact your vet immediately. Corneal ulcers usually respond well to medication, but if left untreated, can cause blindness or even rupture the eye. Dry Eye : Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and pigmentary keratitis are two conditions seen in Pugs. They can occur at the same time, or individually. Your vet can perform tests to determine if this is the cause, which can be controlled with medication and special care. Pigmentary keratits is a condition that causes black spots on the cornea, especially in the corner near the nose. If the pigment covers the eye, it can cause blindness. Your vet can prescribe medication that will help keep the eyes moist and dissolve the pigment. Both of these eye conditions require life-long therapy and care. Eye Problems : Because their large eyes bulge, Pugs are prone to a variety of eye problems, including proptosis the eyeball is dislodged from the eye socket and the eyelid clamps behind it ; distichiasis an abnormal growth of eyelashes on the margin of the eye, resulting in the eyelashes rubbing against the eye ; progressive retinal atrophy a degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells that leads to blindness ; and entropion the eyelid, usually the lower lid, rolls inward, causing the hair on the lid to rub on the eye and irritate it. Allergies : Some Pugs suffer from a variety of allergies , ranging from contact to food allergies. If your Pug is licking at his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, suspect allergy and have him checked by your vet. Demodectic Mange : Also called demodicosis, all dogs carry a little passenger called a demodex mite. The mother dog passes this mite to her pups in their first few days of life. If your Pug has a weakened or compromised immune system, however, it can develop demodectic mange. Demodectic mange can be localized or generalized. In the localized form, patches of red, scaly, skin with hair loss appears on the head, neck and forelegs. Even so, you should take your dog to the vet because it can turn into the generalized form of demodectic mange. Generalized demodectic mange covers the entire body and affects older puppies and young adult dogs. The dog develops patchy skin, bald spots, and skin infections all over the body. The American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology recommends neutering or spaying all dogs that develop generalized demodectic mange because there is a genetic link. Staph Infection : Staph bacteria is commonly found on skin, but some dogs will develop pimples and infected hair follicles if their immune systems are stressed. The lesions can look like hives where there is hair; on areas without hair, the lesions can look like ringworm. You should contact your vet for appropriate treatment. Yeast Infection : If your Pug smells bad, is itchy and has blackened, thickened skin, he may have a yeast infection. It commonly affects the armpits, feet, groin, neck, and inside the ears. Your vet can prescribe medications to clear this up. Hemi-vertebrae : Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, can have misshaped vertebrae. Sometimes, only a few of the vertebrae are affected and the dog is able to live a normal life. Others will stagger and display an uncoordinated, weak gait between 4 and 6 months of age. Some dogs get progressively worse and may even become paralyzed. The cause of the condition is unknown. Surgery can help. Hip Dysplasia : This malady affects small breeds as well as large breeds, including Pugs. Many factors, including genetics, environment and diet, are thought to contribute to this deformity of the hip joint. Affected Pugs are usually able to lead normal, healthy lives with proper veterinary attention. Legg-Perthes Disease : This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Pug has Legg-Perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation : The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Vaccination Sensitivity : There are reports of Pugs suffering from sensitivity to routine vaccinations. Usually, symptoms include hives, facial swelling, soreness and lethargy. A dog that is sensitive to vaccines can develop complications or die, though this is rare. Watch your Pug carefully for a few hours after being vaccinated and call the vet if you notice anything unusual. Pug Care Though playful and rambunctious, the Pug is a low-maintenance companion, making it ideal for older owners. Because they are a small, quiet breed and are relatively inactive when indoors, they are a good choice for apartment dwellers as well. Light sleepers may also want to invest in a pair of ear plugs — Pugs are prone to snore. How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. These dogs love to eat, eat, eat. This, combined with their small stature, puts them at risk for obesity. As a Pug owner, you must show great restraint. Do not indulge him with food. Feed appropriate portions , limit treats and encourage exercise. For more on feeding your Pug, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Pugs are typically fawn-colored or black. The fawn color can have different tints, such as apricot or silver, and all Pugs have a short, flat, black muzzle. Pugs shed like crazy, especially in summer. The wise Pug owner accepts this, and adjusts her wardrobe accordingly, wearing light-colored clothing that better hides hair. Following that, regular brushing and bathing helps keep the coat in good condition and shedding to a minimum. A monthly bath is sufficient, though some owners bathe their Pugs more frequently. These folds are hotbeds for infection if allowed to become damp or dirty. The wrinkles must be dried thoroughly after bathing, and wiped out in-between baths. Some owners simply use a dry cotton ball; others use commercial baby wipes to wipe out the folds. Because they protrude, the eyes are vulnerable to injury and irritation from soaps and chemicals. Like many small breeds, the Pug can be susceptible to gum disease. Regular brushing with a small, soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste helps prevent this. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Though small, the Pug is not delicate like some toy breeds, so he is a good breed choice for families with children. However, children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer will be disappointed with a Pug. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and pets. Properly trained and socialized , the Pug enjoys the companionship of dogs , and can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pug Rescue Groups Pugs are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Pugs in need of adoption and or fostering. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. poodle puppies tennessee - My last dog, Winston Churchill, was a Frenchie, and he was waaaay different as a puppy from my 12 week old Samantha. I've had Samantha since she was 8 weeks old. She's super clever, but is very difficult to wind-down. Samantha is a biter. Not "mouthy" in the cute way puppies sometimes lightly gnaw on everything - she's liertally biting me to the point of broken skin. Her teeth are sharp! She mostly bites my hands and toes especially when I'm walking , but she's started biting my nose, chin and cheeks now, too. I know that she's teething, and I've used the positive techniques of replacing my body parts with chew toys, trained on "no bite" and "leave it" which only gets me so far unless I always have a treat handy , a spray of water to the face, putting "yucky" products on my hands and feet, and yipping loudly in pain. I don't think she's agressive, since she's usually in play mode. She never licks - only bites. It's hectic. Can anyone advise on Olde English puppy mentality or on a successful way to stop the biting? Click to expand. We just had a discussion today about this. Temperament Olde English Bulldogges are docile, but capable and protective, fearless and athletic, fierce-looking, determined and courageous, bold and friendly around their family and friends, but fearless adversaries to anyone who threatens their masters or property. This breed likes to chew and should be supplied with plenty of toys and bones. Nylabones and rubber Kong toys are highly recommended. Rawhides, soft rubber and stuffed toys are unsafe, for they are easily shredded or swallowed whole. Olde English Bulldogges are so eager to please that they may overexert themselves in an effort to do whatever is asked of them. An owner who displays a natural authority toward the dog, socialization and obedience training are important. It is best to channel high energy individuals to some type of work and exercise. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Height, Weight Height: Males 17 - 20 inches 43 - 51 cm Females 16 - 19 inches 40 - 48 kg Weight: Males 60 - 80 pounds 27 - 36 kg Females 50 - 70 pounds 22 - 31 kg Health Problems May be susceptible to bloat —a painful and often fatal condition that can be brought on by too large a quantity of food consumed at one time. As with all large breeds, hip dysplasia sometimes occurs. Breeders are working hard to keep it out of the Olde English Bulldogge; therefore, no dog with bad hips is bred. Living Conditions Olde English Bulldogges will adapt to almost any lifestyle. They should be protected from the extreme cold and heat, although they are not as susceptible as the AKC Bulldog. Exercise This breed needs to be taken on a daily pack walk to satisfy its migration instinct. When properly conditioned they can be active dogs, however, they are equally happy with moderate exercise. They can stay in relatively good shape with good muscle tone with only light exercise. These dogs are naturally slow, and because of their unique structure, they should not be encouraged to jump or engage in strenuous exercise as young pups. This breed is an average shedder. In he became disenchanted with English Bulldogs due to their breeding and breathing problems. David's goal was to produce a dog with the looks of the 18th century bulldog, with the temperament of today's English Bulldogs, yet healthy, without breathing problems, or all the other aliments today's English Bulldogs are prone to. This new breed can now breathe. Cesarean section births are not necessary. Artificial insemination, due to male ineptness and lack of drive, has been replaced by natural ties. Lifespan is over eleven years. All breeding stock has had hip x-rays. No dog with bad hips is bred. David says he is now achieving his goal of producing a Bulldog with the health and temperament to be able to serve people, instead of forcing people to serve him. David Leavitt is breeding them to more of a working lines type dog, while OEBKC is breeding the dogs as more of a family oriented dog. Your dog is special! Chances are that you chose her because you like OEBs and you expected her to have certain traits that would fit your lifestyle: Lively, with a friendly personality Good with children Protective of family; good watch dog Always on the go, with a keen eye for adventure Confident, steady, and fearless However, no dog is perfect! Of course! She is a loving and happy companion. She is a strong and powerful breed that requires ample exercise and a confident leader that provides continuous socialization. His goal was to produce a dog with the appearance, health, and strength of the original bull-baiting breed. The Olde English Bulldogge has fewer breathing problems and less trouble with birthing than the parent breeds. The OEB is a courageous and alert guardian that will defend family and home. The Bulldogge is generally outgoing and friendly with a desire to please — making her easy to train and a wonderful family pet. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Bulldogge. By knowing about health concerns specific to Olde English Bulldogges, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Olde English Bulldogges to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Olde English Bulldogges. At the end of the booklet, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your OEB looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your Olde English Bulldogge is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Olde English Bulldogges are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination, which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Olde English Bulldogges. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Roundworm egg as seen under the microscope. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Bulldogge is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. When the dog breed is more rare, or has not been studied because of geographic or other isolation, we have no stockpile of documented history to draw upon when making preventive healthcare recommendations. We can however, make some educated guesses based on disease risks for dog breeds that share conformational or genetic links with your Olde English Bulldogge. Based on these similarities, the following disease risks may carry higher risk, although supportive research has not been identified. Notice how the lower lid curls in towards the surface of the eye to cause irritation. Eyelid Abnormality Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your Bulldogge is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Allergies In humans, an allergy to pollen, mold, or dust makes people sneeze and their eyes itch. In dogs, rather than sneeze, allergies make their skin itchy. Commonly, the feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for this condition. Allergies, swimming, overgrowth of hair in the ear canals, or an accumulation of earwax can all predispose your dog to ear infections, which are painful and annoying. Bulldogges are very often afflicted by allergies, which cause itching and inflammation in the ears and elsewhere. The earlier we diagnose this disease, the less discomfort and pain he will suffer. Be sure to call us if you notice him scratching or shaking his head, a foul odor from the ears, or if his ears seem painful to the touch. By monitoring for ear infections and treating them early, we also reduce the likelihood of eardrum damage that can lead to deafness. Most ear infections tend to recur until we work together to control the underlying cause. When swallowed, these objects often get stuck and have to be surgically removed. Some of what your dog eats may be toxic and can poison him. If you notice that he is vomiting or not acting right call us immediately. Heart Disease Olde English Bulldogges are prone to multiple types of heart disease, which can occur both early and later in life. Veterinary dental care and weight control go a long way in preventing heart disease. You may notice that he has lameness in his hind legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis — the sooner the better — to avoid discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes considered in severe and life-limiting cases of hip dysplasia. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering. You might notice that he runs along and suddenly picks up a back leg and skips or hops for a few strides. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from popping out of place. Illustration showing a tear in the cranial cruciate ligament of the knee joint. Knee Ligament Tear The cranial cruciate ligament is one of the four tough bands of tissue that hold each knee together. A torn cranial cruciate ligament is a common injury in active dogs, which includes your OEB. Usually surgical correction is done to stabilize the knee and help prevent crippling arthritis. Physical therapy and multimodal pain management are necessary to get the best outcome. Keeping him at the right weight, feeding a high-quality diet, and avoiding too much twisting of the knees like playing Frisbee are key in avoiding this painful injury. Laryngeal Paralysis Older Bulldogges may develop this disease, in which the vocal cords become paralyzed and hang down into the airway. Watch for noisy breathing, especially when exercising or in hot, humid weather. In severe cases a pet can collapse and have difficulty breathing. Mild cases can be managed with changes at home and possibly medication. The thyroid glands rest on both sides of the neck alongside the windpipe. Signs can include dry skin and coat, hair loss, susceptibility to other skin diseases, weight gain, fearfulness, aggression, or other behavioral changes. Treatment is usually simple: replacement hormones given in the form of a pill. Taking Care of Your Olde English Bulldogge at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your OEB live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Olde English Bulldogges generally have good teeth, and you can keep them perfect by brushing them at least twice a week! Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. She can be sensitive to warm temperatures; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem.
