We have made it our mission to find loving suitable homes for displaced, abandoned, or stray dogs with golden personalities. We work with volunteers in New England and with our partner rescue groups outside of New England. Our dogs come to us in different ways: relinquished by their owners, found as strays, or abandoned at a shelter. All of our volunteers have rescued and placed dogs for years. We are committed to decreasing the numbers of dogs euthanized at overcrowded shelters, primarily in the south. Our rescue dogs come in different shapes, sizes and colors. Most of our dogs come to us from our rescue partners in areas outside of New England, taken from kill shelters where they have landed due to no fault of their own - many are strays, others have been turned in by their owners. Because of their various backgrounds, we rarely have any medical or ownership history on them. All of our dogs are vetted age-appropriate meaning they are spayed or neutered and given all necessary vaccines. Together with our vet we will treat them for medical issues that are diagnosed. When they are ready to go to their forever homes, our dogs are transported with a USDA certified transport company and require a license to cross state lines aka a health certificate to travel. We are dedicated to finding the best possible homes for these dogs in need. September is National Preparedness Month! The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Whether it's a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or blizzard, it's critical to be prepared and have a plan in place. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Find out which shelters allow pets Do some research into where you can safely evacuate with your pet during a state of emergency before a disaster occurs. Your local police department can typically give you this information. If not, they'll likely be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Though unfortunate, it is not true that hotels must accept pets during evacuations, so please keep that in mind while planning ahead. Prepare a pet disaster kit In a suitcase or other easily movable storage container, pack food and water bowls, a manual can opener, two weeks' worth of canned food and bottled water per pet, plastic poop bags for dogs , litter and a small litter box for cats , and two weeks' worth of any medications your pet may need. You should also pack cleaning items, sturdy leashes and harnesses, toys, and a copy of your pet's medical records. For small animals and cats, have a carrier ready. Use this checklist to prepare. Create handouts Create an identification handout and a boarding instruction handout. Have both ready to go at a moment's notice. They should contain important information, such as your pet's name, age, sex, markings, microchip number, allergies, and vaccination status. If you get separated from your pet, make sure you're safe before you begin your search. If you're in a shelter that houses pets, inform a caretaker and provide them with the identification handout. Once you've been given the OK to leave the shelter and return home, contact animal control and call the microchip company to make sure all information about you and your pet is current. To make a very long story short, she went on to become the saving grace of my life and a certified therapy dog who was with me for 13 years. After she crossed over that rainbow bridge, I did a lot of research with adoption agencies and came across SGRR. After filling out the application and being interviewed I was offered a dog by the name of Daisy, a beautiful red Golden Retriever. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. That is when I realized what an amazing organization, so full of caring and wonderful people who often go above and beyond for these wonderful animals. When my Daisy girl crossed over after a few months went by I thought it time to bring another friend home. Golden Retrievers had become hard to find so I decided to take a mixed breed home which was a big deal for me being the Golden Retriever lover that I am. I never had a male or a mixed breed before so I did not know what to expect. Finnie settled right in and is a wonderful companion and friend to furry sibling Gracie. Finnie took some training but I knew in time he would be a great dog and he is a great dog. He is very different than the other dogs in my life but he is so much fun to have with us. He loves people and gets very excited with everyone and will jump up in the air like an acrobat we are working on that , but a great dog. I would encourage everyone to think about a mixed breed. The corrections he taught us were very simple and two days later Nala is having no issues with understanding what we are trying to communicate to her, thus making her training that much more effective. She was very professional and included the kids into the session. We noticed a huge difference in our 1 year old Siberian husky max with door control, lead control and lots more. With Marley our 10 week old Siberian husky, we started teaching her to use a lead and walk. She also learnt recall and taught how to tell her off properly. We are very excited to see how much more our dogs learn and improve. Emma has been amazing with answering all our questions. He has stranger anxiety and barks to demand attention from his humans. When he knows you he jumps up on you. If he doesn't know you he cowers away in apprehension and fear. He really needs guidance from his humans to feel secure. At our first lesson he responded really well and his humans told me that when guests came that evening they were able to prevent his jumping up and drop his demanding barking. Well done already! Peter walked in and immediately had all of the dog's calm no aggression within a minute even my male pom Geordie who is extremely aggressive with strangers stopped barking and growling we were speechless it's the only time in 5 years that this has happened. Rex was mouthing and play biting me quite badly he has completely stopped since Peter's visit. Peter came into our lives and taught us how to communicate with our fur babies the dog's now interact with each other in a calm relaxed way and are not aggressive towards Rex he is very respectful of their size all 4 now obey immediately it's magic. Peter also advised us to consider a change to their diet and feeding routine to help me with the aggression around meal times this has worked wonders and 2 of the dog's who were over weight have now started to slim down and are more active and healthy. Our "puppy" is not always easy, but they train her well, they're kind, they show up on time, they take great photos, and they are, overall, are terrific! Kerry is very easy to work with and reliable. She responds to our scheduling questions promptly and we love working with her. Now onto our dog.Our dog looks for Peter out the window every morning, waiting for his car to pull up because she is so excited to go on an adventure with him. Her recall has drastically improved, and we are so thankful for the training work Peter does while on the adventure. It's been worth every penny. As a puppy, Cooper would tend to get over-excited and clobber her buddies canine and human. While she has always been "friendly," we worried that she wasn't able to read social cues from other dogs and exhibit enough inhibition to keep her from being a pest. Having weekly practice with dogs while under knowledgeable supervision has been fabulous for us. The trainers at DANW are able to step in and guide Coop so that play stays fun for everyone and she is increasingly able to self-regulate and play or just co-exist happily with a variety of dogs. It's so nice to know that our pup is getting the practice and training she needs in an environment that isn't full of too many dogs and extra noises that might make it harder for her to calm herself, as might be the case in a crowded daycare. Her outings are without a doubt the highlight of her week. I'm sure she enjoys her hikes with us but her joyful helicopter tail when she sees Simone or Verena pull up in front of the house is truly next level. Morning and evening updates and sometimes more! As new puppy parents, we were anxious to leave our doodle Wally for our first vacation away but after speaking with our trainer, we were confident that Wally would be in the best hands. Jessica met with us ahead of time at her home to get to know Wally and answer any questions we had. We booked a test run weekend ahead of our 10 day vacation to help Wally adjust to her home and time away. During the test run, Jessica sent us so many photos and texts of our sweet smiling pup that we could actually enjoy our weekend in Bend. We also scheduled a few adventure day camp sessions with Jessica between the test run and the vacation to make sure Wally felt extra comfortable - this was absolutely worth it and Wally adores Jessica. Over the 10 day vacation, Jessica was an incredible communicator, sent us detailed notes around training and how he was adjusting. We felt so good that Wally was enjoying his adventures, learning tons and having a vacation of his own! Although they said he was smart and well-behaved, he didn't really pay that much attention to training. I was very nervous to trust someone with our fur baby, not only just for a day adventure, but for adventure boarding as well. Mindy Cook has been fantastic with our boy, and he absolutely loves her! Our dog is a one year old Golden Retriever that is full of energy. He goes on a weekly adventure with Mindy, and comes home a very happy and sleepy boy! She always works with him on the adventure no jumping, recall, etc. It is great socialization for our young boy. We also had our dog adventure board with Mindy and her family. Her dog and ours were fast friends. He was able to stay in her home and be a member of her pack for a week. As first-time dog moms to a high-energy Vizsla pup who developed some dog-dog reactivity, we struggled to get Obi off-leash exercise in a safe way, especially since he tends to range and his recall was pretty spotty. We had tried other non-trainer-led solutions with too many dogs and not enough management and it created more issues than it solved. We were excited about the prospect of adventures being guided and managed by positive trainers with a small number of dogs. Cyrus gives thorough reports on how the day went, works with us to resolve any issues, is super communicative and flexible, and works really hard to make sure all the dogs have a great time. Do your pup a favor and sign up for an adventure! We left our young, energetic, and sensitive male Vizsla with her for about a week for our first vacation in over a year. She took impeccable care of him and provided him with lots of enrichment, hikes, love, and rest. She sent us lots of photos and videos so we could see what awesome things he was doing with her. Jess was excellent at making us feel comfortable that he would have good interactions with the other dogs, as he can be a bit dog-selective in who he likes to interact with. She has a great yard and house set up with lots of dog management tools in place, as needed. She also worked on some positive reinforcement training that we requested such as recall and calmness around other dogs. We will definitely board and train with Jess again! It was everything we could have asked her and more. Jess is a super nerd when it comes to dog training and is highly skilled at managing and training all types of dogs. We felt completely comfortable that Obi would not be put into situations that were overly stressful. Jess truly treats every dog in her care like her own. John is wonderful: so kind and communicative. Love all the pictures he sends throughout the adventure. Seger, our Pointer, gives it two paws up! Her trainers, Verena and Fernando, are wonderful with our high energy puppy, Winnow. The opportunity to swim, run, fetch, and play with her dog pack is one of the highlights of her week. She has had weekly adventures for months, with plans to continue indefinitely. Her recall has improved noticeably since working with Verena and Fernando. The convenience of having Winnow picked up and dropped off, safely and reliably, is a huge plus. To top it off, we get helpful, regular feedback from Winnow's trainers after every session. We feel that it is money well spent on the training, exercise, and fun for our very active pup. I have a young, active, small lbs dog who needs a lot of cardio. As an alternative to doggy day care, my dog trainer recommended Dog Adventures Northwest's adventures as a means to tire her out in a consistently positive environment. She was absolutely right - the adventure days are the best! My pup gets out for much needed socialization and play time while gaining confidence in new environments and practicing safe off-leash behavior. As a younger puppy, we also had Kerry do some puppy training sessions to help Mavis master some of her good canine citizen skills. Kerry shared some tips and tricks with us for exercises and training to do at home. Additionally, if she notices anything off about Mavis, she is sure to let us know and always gives us great advice. While bulldog puppies do begin to walk earlier at times, typically during week four we begin to see some major walking. The new found mobility is a joy to watch but does present some different types of responsibility as our bulldog puppies certainly can get themselves into trouble! During this week, we will start to perform some basic socialization steps to ensure that they are prepared for their new homes. Week 5 The puppies are now able to run, chew, and yes, sometimes bite! With the physical progress there are certainly ample teaching opportunities to develop these little guys into well behaving bulldogs. During this time we continue to analyze each puppy socially and develop unique, social profiles of each bully. The puppies start to focus less on physical survival and devote much of their time to playing with their littermates. This is a great learning environment for the puppies! The puppies will also undergo their first round of vet checks to ensure they are developing physically sound bodies. Socially, we continue work with the puppies to ensure they are exposed to the many different environments of the new homes they will be going to all while balancing a high level of biosecurity to ensure they are not exposed to harmful diseases to ensure for a healthy English Bulldog! The puppies are now old enough and confident enough in themselves to begin developing expectations. Being held and being fed are no longer special occasions rather they are rights to life that are demanded. We will make a decision with our vet the age in which the bulldogs are able to be taken home. The primary variable within this decision is physical development. As it turns out, teaching commands early in the leash training process greatly aids your English Bulldog in learning to walk on a leash. Rewards help encourage good behavior. Getting used to the leash and all it entails will be tough for your English Bulldog at first — practicing indoors before moving on to the great outdoors will help make the transition much easier. Choose a Room with Minimal Distractions To practice walking your English Bulldog on a leash indoors, first choose a room with minimal distractions. That way, your furry friend can focus on the task at hand rather than everything else in the environment. The American Kennel Club recommends suiting up your English Bulldog in his collar or harness, attaching the leash, and then practicing walking a few steps in the room at a time. Take it slow and stay patient — he will likely get confused at first. If your English Bulldog is doing well with walking every few steps, try going a few more steps at a time or going a longer distance. Continue practicing walking on a leash indoors with your English Bulldog for several days or longer, until you feel your English Bulldog is ready to graduate to the next step: walking outside. Choose an Area with Minimal Distractions Again, try to start in an area with minimal distractions. For example, you may want to begin by taking a walk around your back yard or along the street in your neighborhood. Begin Your Outside Walk When practicing walking on a leash outside, it may be easiest to go at a time after your English Bulldog has had a play section, or when he is somewhat tired. To begin your walk, hold the leash in your right hand, with your English Bulldog positioned on your left side. As you begin to walk, encourage him to follow the toy. After a few feet of walking, stop, let your English Bulldog play with his toy, give him some praise, and deliver a treat. Continue to repeat this process. To reiterate: Position your English Bulldog on the left side of you. Hold the leash in your right hand. Encourage your English Bulldog to follow the toy as you both begin to walk. After a few feet, stop. Let your English Bulldog play with his toy. Give a lot of praise and a few treats. Again, around the yard or a bit down the block and back will suffice. English Bulldogs may begin to pull on the leash if they become distracted by everything around them. Preventing Pulling To prevent pulling, make sure never to move forward unless the leash is slack between you and your English Bulldog. If he continues to walk while the leash is slack, offer praise and treats to continue to encourage the behavior. Dealing with Pulling So, what should you do when your English Bulldog pulls on the leash while walking? While your feet stay planted, wait for your English Bulldog to return to you before continuing the walk. Turn around and begin walking in the opposite direction until your English Bulldog resumes the correct walking position with no pulling. Continue to repeat the process as needed. Additionally, always try to keep your English Bulldog focused on you. Make sure that he has the most of his attention on you, even if other things are going on in the environment. To do so, always make eye contact with your English Bulldog whenever issuing a command or speaking to him. When you say his name, make sure he looks back at you and makes eye contact. At this time, you can walk longer distances — around the block, down to the store, further through the neighborhood- and see how your English Bulldog does. You may have to adjust the distances on your walks accordingly. Walking your English Bulldog in different and unfamiliar locations will allow him to not only further practice his walking skills but will also allow him to become more social and comfortable. Just as you may experience pulling from your English Bulldog while walking, you may experience some other minor troubles, like lunging or barking. Handling Barking While on Walks While on walks with your English Bulldog, you may notice he has a habit of barking at things, like other dogs, other people, or just foreign noises and sights in general. Further, try to redirect his attention before he begins to bark by offering him a treat. Handling Lunging While on Walks Lunging while on walks is a definite issue with herding breeds, but it can also be an issue with English Bulldogs. Just like if your English Bulldog excessively barks on walks, try to redirect his attention with a treat before something comes along he could potentially lunge at. The best way to circumvent that issue is to try and stop it before it happens. Final Thoughts When you think of English Bulldogs, you may think of their stubborn nature.

A cloudy appearance of the eye Dilated and unresponsive pupils Poor vision What To Do Glaucoma is a serious condition that is painful for your dog. It requires immediate vet care. A more severe case of glaucoma will require surgery to release fluid and relieve pressure on the eye. This causes the eye tissue to dry out and become very uncomfortable. Sometimes dry eye syndrome clears up on its own. Other times, it is a chronic issue that requires lifelong treatment that includes daily eye cleaning. In some cases, a specific cause for uveitis is not found. In other cases, uveitis can come about as a result of trauma, infection, parasites, or an underlying autoimmune or inflammatory disease. It can appear in one eye or both. The most common symptoms of uveitis in dogs include: Extreme eye redness Squinting or being unable to open the eye Avoiding bright lights A cloudy appearance in the eyes Bleeding or tearing in the eye best identified by a veterinarian What To Do When left untreated, this serious condition can lead to permanent blindness. In some cases, the healing process will take several months to fully resolve. This build up of fluid causes the eye to appear gray and cloudy. Most commonly, a corneal ulcer is caused by a scratch, like from an accidental scratch with a brush, or trauma. Underlying issues that cause eye redness include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and even some cancers. An illness such as distemper is another possibility. But before you panic, there are a couple of things you can do before placing a call to your vet. You can also check around the eyes and eyelids to see if you can spot any dirt specks or loose hair, but only do this if your dog will tolerate it. Should you spot something, you can wipe it away with a lukewarm wet cloth. Eye issues can progress very quickly, but your vet will be able to give you some instruction or let you know if a visit is required. A Schirmer test is conducted to make sure the eye is producing enough tears to stay lubricated. The vet will place a filter paper inside the lower lid of the eye. A few minutes later, the vet will remove it to check its moisture content. If your vet suspects a corneal injury or corneal ulcers, then they might use a fluorescein stain test. For this test, a dye is dropped into the eye, which allows the vet to see any injuries that would otherwise be too small to notice. The vet may also find it necessary to do a blood test to check for any underlying illnesses that could cause eye issues. Wipe from the inside corner of the eye outwards, and try not to touch the eyeball itself. Keep a close eye on your dog no pun intended , so you can help notice any problems as soon as possible. Avoid letting your dog hang their head out of the car window. For the cool canine that loves car rides, you can purchase a pair of doggles to protect their eyes from dangerous debris. Younger dogs should see the vet once per year, while an older pet should be checked out twice each year. While most cases of red eyes in dogs are temporary and not very serious, there are some more emergent causes like glaucoma and uveitis that could cause permanent blindness. But others need an immediate trip to the vet. Corneal Ulceration The cornea is the clear membrane over the front of the eye. If your dog gets a foreign body in her eye or manages to scratch the cornea, it can allow a bacterial infection to attack. The bacteria dissolve the cornea as they grow. This is very painful. Note: If you have a Brachycephalic flat-faced breed, her eyes stick out more than is healthy. So Brachy breeds often develop ulcers that are chronic. The symptoms may be less obvious. The eye should return to normal in 12 to 24 hours. If you see these signs, please take your dog to the vet as soon as you can. If your dog swims in the sea or a chlorine pool, that can do the same. This will usually be fairly mild. It should resolve quickly once you move away from the irritant. Red Eyes And Dog Allergies If your dog has atopy allergy to pollens, etc she may get hay-fever like symptoms, such as: Inflammation. Is it time to go to the veterinarian? Short answer: maybe. You will rest easier when your vet figures out why your dog has red eyes, and your dog will be a lot happier if he is cured. Furthermore, things can get worse quickly and it is better to be safe than risk your dog going blind. What Causes Red Eye in Dogs? Dogs get red eyes for a lot of the same reasons that people do. Some reasons are relatively harmless — like allergies or dryness. Other reasons, like eye infections or glaucoma, are emergencies that need immediate treatment to avoid permanent vision loss or blindness. If your dog has red eyes and is blinking, squinting, tearing up and avoiding bright lights, there may be something in his eye.
