Starting from day 3, and until day 16, I follow The "Super Dog" Program for our puppies - an early neurological stimulation program described by Dr. Carmen Battaglia. It has numerous benefits later in life for puppies. Often, puppies that were born the smallest overtake the bigger ones. Even at this tender age strong individual differences can be noted among German Shepherd puppies. Also, there is difference in their color and markings, and long-hair German Shepherd puppies can often be identified at this age. The new mom is very attached to her puppies at this age and is very reluctant to leave them even for the shortest time. She spends a lot of time sleeping with the puppies nursing peacefully, and is also very happy to be busy cleaning each puppy several times a day and flipping them around gently with her nose. At about 2 weeks of age German Shepherd puppies actually start looking more like puppies, and not just fat black sausages with feet attached. We use undiluted evaporated goats milk from a can, warmed up to be pleasant to the touch. Most puppies readily accept the bottle, and we consider this to be very important bonding and social time as well. Three weeks of age is my favorite age of all. The puppies now can be recognized as German Shepherd puppies. They are alert, playful, and there is a lot of wrestling, tail-wagging, and even barking going on as they explore their surroundings and interact with each other and their mom, all of which is extremely cute. I will often just sit in the whelping box with them, letting them play with my clothes, climb up on my lap, and generally just enjoying their carefree company. We also provide them with various toys starting at this age, and make sure that they listen to loud music, banging on the door, vacuum cleaner, etc. They weigh around 1. At first, they may not have a lot of success with it, as some of them try to suckle on the meat, but in a few days they master this new type of eating very well. We also continue giving them goats milk, but in a shallow saucer pan now, and with some rice baby cereal added, so that they can practice lapping. At this age, the mom is no longer so keen on constantly staying with her puppies, and only visits them to feed them and for a clean up. We continue changing the bedding twice a day now, knowing very well that in about a week it will become times a day, as the mom will not be able to keep up with her cleaning duties any more. We wash soiled towels with a little bit of bleach and a little bit of perfume-free detergent. Four weeks of age is even more fun as the puppies keep developing, but the amount of cleaning starts to increase in geometrical progression, and it becomes a full time job to keep the puppies well fed and clean. The mom is only visiting now and then at this point, and enjoys spending her time in the office, so that she can hear and see the puppies, but not necessarily be with them. With mom visiting for a few brief feedings each day, we feed them three times a day with the following diet: 1. Cottage cheese 2 tbsp per puppy , mixed with plain yogurt 1 tsp per puppy , evaporated goats milk, rice baby cereal 1 tsp. Raw tripe, or beef liver cooked with all kinds of vegetables At about 5 weeks of age the duty of keeping the whelping box clean becomes nightmarish, and this is a good time to introduce German Shepherd puppies to the outdoors. This is a room that is a part of the house, but has free access to the outside world. This room is equipped with a wooden resting platform so that puppies do not lay on concrete, with a heating lamp above it, and the floor is completely covered with a layer of pine woodchips. The outside area is about 6 x 6 ft and the floor is made of paving stones. There is another wooden laying platform here. This is a very important period when we introduce our German Shepherd puppies to more noises, show them the way in and out of the house, introduce them to the other dogs, play tug-of-war, etc. Also, we introduce raw frozen sardines and "The Honest Kitchen" products to their diet, and will occasionally feed kibble, soaked well in warm water and mixed with green tripe from a can At 3, 5, and 7 weeks of age our German Shepherd puppies get dewormed with a high quality wormer, to be certain that they are free of intestinal parasites. At about 6 weeks of age the puppies get their first combination 5-way vaccine including Parvo and Distemper , and at 7 weeks of age we start welcoming visitors who are interested to come and look at the puppies. This gives me an opportunity to observe the dog while also evaluating what the dog needs versus what his guardians are providing. In this case, it quickly became clear that Ford was not getting the amount of exercise that he needed. On average, a dog that is under two years old needs a good 45 minutes of exercise every day at a minimum. I made a couple of suggestions as to alternatives to a traditional walk. I am a big proponent of what I call a dogskiing; having a dog pull you while on a harness while the human is on rollerblades or a skateboard. This gives the a dog the ability to pull as much as it wants and to go for as long as it needs. The bonus for the human is you can usually burn three times the amount of energy as a traditional walking, so the time needed is far less. Over the course of the session, I witnessed multiple activities or encounters that would be much easier to deal with if the dog was getting the amount of exercise he needs. Either you can decide where, or they can. I spent the next few minutes going over some basics of the fetch as well as how to reward the dog so that he dropped the ball on his own. For many dogs this will trigger a guarding response. By rewarding the dog and marking the various steps of the fetching exercise with the command word, the families mother was able to get him to fetch and drop the ball within a matter of minutes. I had previously recommended that they practice my Petting with a purpose strategy, but she mentioned that she had not been doing that lately. Petting with a purpose is one of the easiest things a dog guardian can do that has the biggest impact. Once it becomes habit, we do it without even thinking. But each time we do, we reinforce the leader follower dynamic that we want. I also recommended that she start practicing the leadership exercise I showed her in our original session. It takes a little time but has big payoffs when mastered. Another issue that I noticed both humans struggling with was defining their personal space. When the families father came in through the door, the dog jumped up on him in an excited fashion while the father petted the dog. Whenever you pet a dog, you are reinforcing whatever it is doing at the time. In this situation they were encouraging this excited mental state which makes it more difficult for the dog to listen and obey. By simply stopping and ignoring the dog when it is in an excited state of mind and then promptly petting it when it settles down, we can communicate to the dog that the only way to get our attention is through good, calm behavior. I spent a few minutes walking the mother through a simple stay exercise. This is probably one of the most underrated and underappreciated commands that a dog guardian can instill in their dog. Not only is the command extremely beneficial to apply, it helps the dog practice development of self-control. To really master this exercise, I suggested that the mother practices it for a couple of minutes at a time, 2 to 4 times a day every day for a solid two weeks or until Ford will reliably every time. With some consistent practice, she will be able to get him to stay for longer periods of time and throughout distractions. Another great way to get a dog to develop some self-control is to ask them to sit or wait before engaging in an activity that they are excited for. A great example of this is letting the dog outside. I spent the next few minutes showing his guardians how to communicate that the dog needed to wait for permission before passing through an open door. Another great way to help develop a healthy leader follower dynamic is to ask the dog to wait while food is in its bowl for permission to eat. This gives the human the ability to eat first which puts them in more of a leadership position. I also suggested that they practice leaving these items on the floor in the living room when they have time to give Ford their complete attention. By consistently disagreeing with the dog when it shows interest in these items, we can help the dog learn that they are to be left alone. When dogs live in groups, security is typically handled by the senior ranking dog. Because Ford frequently beat his guardians to the door whenever there was a knock, the dog likely felt that was his job, giving him the perception that he has more authority than he actually does. If the family can arrange for a dog walker or dog skiing or other energy burning activity early in the day, they should see a noticeable improvement in his responsiveness and overall behavior. I was encouraged to see the dog starting to show her more respect and attention. As a petite woman with a nice, positive energy and a more soft-spoken voice, she was disadvantages as far as how dogs perceive authority. Neither of these traits is good for both house dogs and dogs that are meant to work or show animals. Unsocialized dogs also tend to have more behavioral problems. They act out in situations in which they are not comfortable. This can mean chewing, barking, or even viciousness. Other dogs are the best trainers for a new pup, so keeping them with their littermates and parents will help them grow and develop into confident, well-behaved dogs. They are bred to be experts at detection, which is great for policing, and agility. While these traits are inbred and instinctual, they also need to be developed. These puppies are spending time with their mother and littermates, with whom their skills are already becoming apparent. The parental dogs provide a good example and play with siblings will mimic and develop these skills. The same goes for agility. There is no better training ground for a pup than an open space with their siblings. If your dog is primarily an outdoor family pet, it is highly recommended that you bring them indoors when temperatures reach that marker. There are many ways to prevent this from advancing into something worse. It is as simple as warming up your Golden when coming in from outdoors. Even if indoor temperatures are low and your dog seems to be chilled, there are solutions to warm them up. Whether it be an extra step before going outdoors, returning indoors, or just making smart decisions when the climate is cool. These precautionary steps include: Making sure your Golden Retriever is completely dry prior to going outdoors. Cleaning them before they return inside. Always staying with your Golden outside Avoiding shaving their hair during winter Making sure they are dry before entering the cold outdoors is logical. Think about it; if you walk out with your hair wet when it is cold, you instantly feel the chill of the cold. Same goes for your furry companion. If they are wet and walk outside into cold conditions, the chances of them becoming cold is greater. This could also increase the risk of hypothermia. Toweling off any snow or ice particles on their paws or legs can help them dry faster and essentially help them warm up quicker. Not to mention it will keep your house tidy. This will also prevent the dog from ingesting any chemicals or salt that they could have picked up along the way on their paws. Stay with your dog while they are outside so you can watch for any signals that they are cold. If possible, keep your Golden Retrievers fur long and thick until warmer weather. Their hair is what helps keep them warm. Winter Apparel and Accessories for Dogs Our dogs depend on us to keep them warm in the winter and colder months. Below is a list of a few items that do just that. Depending on how cold it is in your region, one or more of these items can greatly increase your pets safety and comfort in the cold. Warm Sweaters and Jackets. A winter coat is not necessary for most Golden Retrievers. Golden Retrievers that are healthy and active do not need to wear a winter coat. But, there are factors to consider such as age, health status, temperature, activity level and climate, that will determine if your Golden Retriever needs to wear a winter coat. Here are 5 factors you need to consider that will help you determine if your Golden should wear a winter coat: 1. Activity Level Putting a winter coat on your Golden Retriever may seem like a good idea, but it will likely cause your dog to overheat! This is especially true if your Golden is healthy and active. Double-coated breeds like the Golden Retriever are protected from the elements. This includes cold weather. The outer coat consists of guard hairs that repel moisture and dirt, and the inner coat is thick and dense. However, you still need to be mindful when the temperatures become extreme. Age of Your Golden Retriever When it gets cold outside, you need to pay special attention to your Golden if they are a puppy or a senior. Puppies: Young puppies do not have a fully developed immune system yet and tend to get cold faster. They are unable to regulate their body temperature, like a healthy adult dog. A winter coat is beneficial for the outdoors, and a sweater may be needed to keep them warm indoors. Recovering From Injuries or Surgery Any dog that is recovering from an injury or surgery should be taking it easy to help speed up healing. Having added warmth from a winter coat while taking a short walk or going outside to pee may be beneficial to keep the immune system strong. Acclimating To A New Climate If your Golden Retriever is used to living in a warm climate and has never experienced cold weather, a winter coat will be beneficial. Just because your Golden has a double-coat does not mean they will be able to tolerate the cold. This is especially true if your Golden is used to living in sunny and warm areas. Having never experienced cooler temperatures will make your Golden susceptible to feeling cold. The same is true for Goldens who spend a lot of time indoors. A winter coat will help them stay warm and slowly transition them to their new colder climate. But, what about your Golden Retriever? At what temperature will my Golden Retriever need a coat? Cooler temps. Below 32 degrees Fahrenheit 0 degrees Celsius : When the temperature reaches below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, you will want to pay close attention to your puppy, senior, or sick dog. They may need to limit their time outdoors as well as wear a winter coat. Below 20 degrees Fahrenheit .A winter coat will help keep your dog warm, but time spent outside should be limited. Most Golden Retrievers enjoy the snow and the colder temperatures that winter brings. But, they can get cold and show some subtle and obvious signs that you need to watch out for.
