Naturally, responsible dog food brands do not include these ingredients, anyway. Related Content. Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids Labradoodle puppies, those younger than 12 to 18 months, generally require higher levels of protein and fat to accommodate their growth. Senior dogs also need high-protein foods to help fuel muscle. Other factors to consider include size and activity level. Understanding the different kinds of food available and the respective pros and cons will help you make the best decision for your dog. It requires minimal effort to prepare, but commercial brands offer clear instructions on which dog breeds benefit from their food. Most brands also provide different foods for different ages and sizes, which helps dog owners easily transition from puppy food to adult food. Thus, commercial dog food brands are a fairly popular option when it comes to feeding pets. The tools you need to evaluate a dog food brand are typically available right on the packaging. The most important thing to check when purchasing kibble is the first ingredient listed on the packaging. In high-quality food, you can expect meat to be the primary ingredient. Conversely, lower-quality foods contain high amounts of meat by-products, such as chicken meal. They also often contain cornmeal, soy and other unhealthy ingredients that can promote health problems. This label sets high standards for U. In general, AAFCO-recommended brands should be selected over ones that have not received their stamp of approval. Finally, dog owners need to choose between dry dog food and wet canned food. Dry kibble is usually the recommended option as it has higher protein levels and is better for digestion. Dry food also encourages dental health and helps maintain good breath. Wet food is typically easier to digest and can help with hydration, so many dog owners choose to mix it in with dry dog foods every now and then. Raw Diet A raw food diet is one of the most controversial dog food options out there. Advocates of this diet argue that it promotes overall canine health, but disbelievers claim the bacteria found in raw materials can be dangerous. Most raw food advocates follow the BARF Biologically Appropriate Raw Food diet, which consists of good-quality meat, vegetables and healthy carbs like sweet potatoes or brown rice. It typically also includes organs such as liver, kidney or spleen , as well as some extra ingredients to optimize a balanced nutrition and flavor such as herbs or fish oil. While there are subscription services available for raw diets, many dog owners choose to make the food themselves. Fresh Diet Dog owners who want the benefits of raw diets without the risks may opt to feed their dog a fresh food diet. Like raw diets, these foods are all-natural and include a healthy combination of proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables and organs. However, unlike raw diets, a fresh diet ensures all meats are cooked thoroughly. While these diets require more effort and tend to be on the pricier side, they let dog owners monitor ingredients without having to worry about unhealthy bacteria. Another food option involves combining different types of diets. Many dog owners give their dogs a steady combination of dry, hard kibble with fresh veggies and meats, simultaneously reaping the benefits of dry and fresh dog food. You can consult your vet for recommendations on health supplements. Some Labradoodles may have food allergies that affect the type of diet they can consume. If you notice any food allergy symptoms, such as rashes or reddened skin, you should try to identify the culprit as quickly as possible. A good way to test for allergies is to conduct an elimination diet. This requires getting rid of certain foods and then slowly reintroducing them one by one to see if your dog has some type of reaction. Common canine allergies include: Beef. Fruits and vegetables Labradoodles can eat Dairy If your Labradoodle is not lactose intolerant, he can eat some dairy foods in moderation. Dairy foods provide protein, calcium, vitamin D, A, B12, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. They build strong bones, reduce the risk of diabetes, and may improve heart health. Experimenting with small amounts of dairy foods is best to see what your dog can handle. Some dogs have trouble digesting milk but can enjoy small pieces of cheese or a blob or two of plain yogurt. My dog loves small chunks of cheese but cannot tolerate even a small spoonful of heavy cream — although she is okay with some milk. World of Dogz Commercial Dog Food Aside from the foods listed above, you can also feed your Labradoodle commercial dog food. Labradoodles can eat dry, wet, semi-dry food technically wet, too , raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried food. However, you must be careful not to select a food package for a different breed with macro nutritional requirements other than Labradoodles. The most remarkable thing about commercial dog food is that it is far less expensive than homemade dog food and takes much less time to prepare, store, and feed. Labradoodles cannot eat chocolate, macadamia nuts, black walnuts, onion, garlic, grapes, or avocado. Standard market-packed sardines are the safest fish for dogs. Even onion powder in a broth can have this effect. Garlic Garlic can also make your dog anemic. Make sure any food you prepare contains no garlic flavor. Chocolate Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate and chocolate-adjacent products are toxic to dogs. Ensure you choose an organic brand. Nuts Some nuts can lead to weakness, vomiting, and tremors. Macadamia and black walnuts are the worst at this. Other varieties are also too high in fat. Avocado The avocado skin can result in vomiting and diarrhea, so your Labradoodle should be kept away from this fruit. Your dog can OD on alcohol. Sugar Dogs love sweet treats, but if you feed a sugar-rich diet, they will get fat. Yeast Dough If you bake bread at home, keep your dog away from unbaked dough. It can ferment in the stomach causing alcohol toxicosis, and the yeast can rise in the gut, causing a severe blockage. The first is to sit down and curate a Labradoodle diet that dodges the above. The second is to simply opt for packaged dog food. Specific fruits can be toxic to your Labradoodle — especially grapes and starfruit. You can feed your dog veggies — yet garlic and onion can be problematic. You can provide your dog fish — but not if it is completely raw. However, organic food is healthier than extruded kibble cooked at high temperatures which reduces its nutritional value. On the other hand, packaged dog food is easy to get, feed, and store. Wet Dog Food If your Labradoodle turns his nose up at dry kibble, you can try wet dog food as it contains much higher moisture content than dry food. Some larger dogs like it, whereas others prefer a bit of crunch. Take note, though, that canned wet food can be expensive for dogs the size of Labradoodles, as you will need to provide much more. Ensure you check the protein content, as wet food contains a lot of water. Dry and Wet Mix This is one of the most widely preferred Labradoodle food types, and you get the best of both worlds. Most Doodles who dislike dry or wet food like a wet and dry mix. Adding a few scoops of wet food to dry food changes the texture and palatability of the food, making it enticing to your dog. You can also add water to dry dog food making it easier to digest and more appetizing, especially if you have a fussy eater or a dog with general appetite loss due to illness. This gives your dog added variety — but remember to adjust the calories accordingly. You may also consider semi-moist dog food. You can use one of countless dog chow recipes to produce homemade dog food. Some dog owners enjoy home cooking for their dogs as it gives them complete control of what they feed them. However, preparing a homemade diet can also be expensive and is very time-consuming. Check out the directory of certified vet nutritionists from the American College of Veterinary Nutrition to help you find one in your area. Raw Dog Food Of course, if you grasp the idea of feeding chow made from leftover meat, you can always get your Labradoodle a prime Wagyu steak. A raw food diet consists of raw meat and organs mixed in — and raw bones. This method of feeding your dog has grown in popularity in recent years. You can prepare a raw diet at home, similar to a home-cooked meal except raw , or buy pre-prepared complete and balanced raw food, which is more convenient. While weighing up your options, you might want to consider the price of feeding a raw diet. Dehydrated Dog Food Dehydrated dog food also known as air-dried is often confused with dry dog food because it is technically dry. However, you must add water to get the food into the shape it is intended to be served. A dehydrated doggy diet is a healthy and minimally processed feeding option as it uses a low-heat and gentle drying method. It combines the convenience of dry food with the nutritional benefits of raw. It is easier to store and far more portable, but it can be costly. Freeze-Dried Dog Food Freeze-dried dog food is prepared at the factory and brought into its wet form, then freeze-dried into solids that dissolve in the water. It is dehydrated at a lower temperature. Once the food is put in a sealed package, it can take years to degrade because there is no moisture for microorganisms to survive. When you buy freeze-dried dog food, it is still raw. For example, a Labrador mixed with a Standard Poodle will need far more food than a much smaller Lab mixed with a Toy Poodle. A smaller adult female needs 1. A Labradoodle puppy needs 12 — 16 ounces of food per day divided into 3 meals initially and then 2 meals at 6 months old. Labradoodles tend to control their weight pretty well. However, some dogs may be food-motivated and greedy, especially if they carry the POMC mutated gene , which is responsible for an increased appetite in Labradors. Labradoodle Feeding Schedule You should consider the energy your dog expends during the day when creating a healthy feeding schedule for them. Mini Labradoodles, for example, will burn off energy more quickly than the standard variety. However, it is advised to offer one cup of dry dog food or its equivalent and then wait eight hours before feeding another cup to avoid canine bloat. When your Labradoodle is a puppy, you must split his intake into 3 or 4 meals. Feeding your pup can be slightly complicated because of your, and not his, schedule. Labradoodle Puppy Meal Plan Puppies need feeding more often, as they need extra calories for growth and to satisfy their energy requirements. Labradoodle puppies should be fed 4 meals a day up to 3 months of age, 3 meals a day up to 6 months of age, and 2 meals a day from 6 months to adulthood. Age of Labradoodle. There is so much to decide on, starting with the quantities! The Labradoodle is a hybrid dog cross with a Labrador retriever and a poodle. But since Poodles are bred in three sizes and can weigh anywhere from 4 to 70 pounds. So you may not be sure yet how big your little Labradoodle puppy will eventually grow. Labradoodle Puppy Feeding Timeline For young puppies under 6 months old, we recommend four daily feedings spaced at equal intervals throughout the day. After this you can move to three feedings around a year old. Protein sources should occupy the first few ingredients. Organic ingredients are a plus. Avoid fillers, by-products, artificial ingredients or sweeteners. You may also want to talk with your veterinarian about starting your puppy on a grain-free diet with one of these high-quality and popular puppy foods. Added antioxidants, DHA, superfoods and probiotics nourish your growing puppy. This food is free from known allergens such as grain and corn. It also has plenty of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, including DHA for overall healthy development. This food is free from artificial ingredients, fillers and preservatives. Best Wet Puppy Food for Labradoodles The best puppy food for Labradoodles will often be a dry kibble, but it can be a good idea to keep a high-quality wet puppy food on hand as well. It is more hydrating and can be more palatable too. It is a chunk stew that is completely wheat-free. So, it makes our list of best puppy food for Labradoodles. It can also be used as as a kibble topper or treat supplement with extra DHA, vitamins and minerals. Best Dog Food for Labradoodle Puppy If you are concerned about transitioning your Labradoodle puppy to adult dog food, you may find that the best puppy food for Labradoodles is one where the manufacturer also makes an adult food. This can make transitions much easier. One of these options may be the best puppy food for Labradoodle dogs at your home. Is kibble, cans, raw or homemade food better? Swapping Puppy Food Brands Moving into his or her new home is a challenging and exciting time for your Labradoodle puppy. Keep feeding what your pup is used to for at least two weeks. Then, slowly start mixing in the new food you have chosen for your pup. Labradoodle Puppy Diets Puppies have lots of growing to do. This means that they need more of certain minerals and nutrients for example calcium and phosphorus for bone growth. Your labradoodle pup will also need a higher amount of good quality protein. This is definitely not the case, though. This—among other things—can cause joint problems, such as hip dysplasia. Labradoodles are a cross between two breeds that are both already at high risk of developing hip dysplasia. The most important thing of all is to avoid overfeeding a Labradoodle puppy, as we will see later in this article. This is called hypoglycemia. Generally, a feeding schedule for your Labradoodle pup can look like this: 2 — 4 months: 4 meals daily 4 — 6 months: 3 meals daily 6 — 8 months: 2 — 3 meals daily Older than 8 months: 2 meals daily. Just make sure to divide the total daily amount onto multiple feedings. You can make slight adjustments to these amounts if your pup is looking a little slim or chunky. The number of calories your pup needs will also change as he or she gets older and heavier. There are a couple of different options out there. Commercial dog foods offer complete and balanced nutrition for your growing pup — this means that they have all the right nutrients in all the right amounts and ratios. If a puppy is fed an inappropriate diet, this could lead to long-lasting growth defects or other malnutrition diseases. Feeding a Labradoodle Puppy Kibble Kibble is the most popular type of dog food out there. There are only two things you need to pay attention to when choosing kibble: It should be designed specifically for puppies, and it should be high-quality. Research shows that higher-priced dog foods tend to have higher nutrient digestibility than lower-priced kibble — so it might be worth spending a bit more. Choose a kibble that contains a meat protein source as the first ingredient, and steer clear of ingredients like corn, soy, and cereals. Due to its high water content, the aromas and taste of the meat unfold better, making wet food the most palatable food there is. This comes at a bit of a cost, though: Wet food tends to be more expensive than kibble, and of course it spoils more easily. To get the best of both worlds of commercial dog foods, you can combine or alternate between kibble and wet food. The BARF diet consists of lots of raw meat and bones, as well as some veg and fruit. Supporters of raw feeding think that it will make your dog healthier, although there is no solid evidence for this yet. Raw meats are often contaminated with bacteria such as Salmonella or Campylobacter. These bacteria could potentially cause diseases in your pup. However, this is extremely rare, as the digestive tract most dogs can handle these bugs just fine. This means that there is a lot less danger of bacterial infections from raw meats. Keep in mind that cooking for a dog is not the same as cooking for yourself. Avoid spices, onions, garlic, cooking oils, and too much salt. These are dogs that will always want more food and are prone to obesity. It can help to space out meals or add one or two feedings a day if your dog is constantly hungry. Another option is to make your dog work for small amounts of food throughout the day — be it with puppy training, food balls, or puzzles. The possibilities are endless. Within a few weeks you should be able to tell if they would be content with changing to 2 meals per day. Some dogs will be happy with 1 meal per day from about the age of one year onwards. However this is a decision that should be made on a pup-to-pup basis. Your puppy will need to have access to plenty of fresh water. Our Labradoodles enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables. These include blueberries, apples, bananas, strawberries, pumpkin, beans, peas, and carrots. They also thoroughly enjoy eggs cooked or raw , tuna, sardines, and the occasional dollop of yoghurt. Our dogs enjoy a balanced and grain-free dog food, coupled with good quality fresh meats. If choosing to feed dry food, there are fantastic quality brands available. It is very easy to make food yourself for your dog when feeding your Labradoodle puppy. This enables you to give your dog a good variety of nutrients. You can search for recipes on the internet that would suit your dog, or ask your vet. Be aware of the additives that some pet foods may have in them. These can often have a negative effect on their long-term health. Raw bones are also fantastic for Labradoodles, including ribs and chicken necks. Ask your local butcher for a nicely cut dog bone suitable for the size of your pup. Your puppy will love a good bone to chew on, they are often obsessed with chewing anything and everything at this age! Bones are a great source of calcium, as well as acting as a fantastic tooth brush for dogs! We avoid feeding our dogs high-lactose forms of dairy, such as milk and cream, as these can cause gastrointestinal issues of varying severity. We also abstain from giving our pups lactose-free puppy milk. This is nutritionally redundant in the presence of a balanced diet. Our dogs do, however, thoroughly enjoy a treat of cheese or the occasional splash of yoghurt. Hypro Premium Australian made, ensuring freshness is a great option for your puppy. It is nutritionally balanced and high quality. Your puppy will be used to this already, having eaten it at our home. Another firm favourite is Vets All Natural, a rehydratable and biologically appropriate option that is mixed through raw meat. Labradoodles by nature are not greedy or voracious eaters, and will only eat if they are hungry. You can weigh your puppy regularly to keep a track of their growth. These include chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, onion, garlic, and all cooked bones this list is not exhaustive. Never feed your dog cooked bones as this can be fatal due to the bones splintering within the dogs intestinal system. We suggest that you feed him in his crate with the door closed so that he makes a positive association between the food and crate. We also suggest that you simultaneously train him to sit. Bring the food bowl and your puppy over to the crate, pop him inside and say 'sit' in a clear and firm voice, whilst using one hand to signal the command usually a pointed finger and the other hand the plant his bottom firmly on the ground. Keep that hand firmly on his bottom and use the other hand to put the bowl of food in front of him. Let go of his bottom and close the crate door. As time goes on, you will find you won't need to push his bottom down and he will respond to the voice and hand signal. This is a great time to achieve 'sit', because the food acts as the reward. A typical meal size would be grams in dry weight for an 8 week old puppy, but this does vary a little dependent on the size of your puppy. When your puppy has finished his meal, you will find that his tummy is noticeably bigger - this is normal. By the time the next mealtime comes around, his tummy should be back to normal size if it is not, you fed him too much on the previous meal. As he gets older, you can reduce the number of meals in the day, but increase the portion size. By 12 weeks old, you could have him down to three meals and by 6 months old that could be reduced to two meals. We feed all of our adult dogs twice per day - 8am and 5pm. This table provides a guideline for how much to feed your puppy as he grows, but there is no exact formula as there are other factors to consider such as activity levels and physical condition. Ideally, you want your puppy to be at a weight where you can feel his ribs, but his top line and hip bones are nicely covered. Australian Labradoodles do not tend to be greedy dogs, but maintaining a healthy weight is very important.
Pugs can become famous themselves too, such as in the case of Sir Henry, the Pug belonging to society lady Uschi Ackerman with its own Facebook page and Pug collection. These charming dogs with an often surly or melancholic facial expression win hearts in a flash with their cheerful, humorous and lively manner. They are neither aggressive nor combative with counterparts or other pets, but instead are sociable and get on well with everyone. They are adaptable and easy-going, hence make ideal companion or family dogs. The history of the Pug breed has not been clarified exactly, but presumably originates from East Asia, most probably from China. It was tradition there to breed small dogs that have short, wide and flat heads as a common feature. The first European country the Pug made it to was probably the Netherlands by sea around .The House of Orange had a special relationship with this breed after a Pug called Pompey warned its owner, Wilhelm the Silent, of an assassin by barking loudly and saving his life. In the 18th century, the Pug experienced a boom, which was reflected in paintings, chinaware, songs and stories. The cornerstone of a healthy life — the right diet from the very beginning The Pug is a small dog breed and reaches a height of around 26 to 34cm and an ideal weight of approx. You should make sure its food has an adapted amount of calories, since if not, the Pug can reach a higher weight than foreseen and develop an unstable bone structure. By nature, the Pug has a compact physique with good, strong muscles. Hence, it needs sufficient exercise and a balanced needs-based diet. In order for the little Pug to make a healthy start to its life, you should take care to ensure its puppy food contains a balanced and appropriate proportion of calories, minerals, trace elements and vitamins. How much and often to feed The best food for Pug puppies is easy to swallow, but still provides them with a complete diet. Because while this adorable dog is partially popular for that cute little face, their flattened features make finding the right food a little trickier. Chewing and Swallowing Pugs are brachycephalic , which means that they have been bred for their wider muzzles. This flat face makes it tricky to breathe, even more so while they are trying to eat. Pugs are also prone to retained deciduous teeth. Again, making chow down more of a chore. Nutrition Matters Pug puppies have different nutritional requirements to adults. They need more fat and more protein, along with additional amino acids and minerals. They should also have more omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA for brain and eye development. Feeding growing puppies the right balanced commercial diet can help keep them healthy. What is the Best Food for Pug Puppies? Puppy food is good for puppies, of course, because it includes more energy-intensive ingredients. However, you should be cautious. Research shows our understanding of specialist dog foods needs to be more nuanced. For example, researchers have found that even dogs within the same family had a 20 percent difference in energy requirements from their food. It also showed that temperature may play a role in their needed energy requirements. Basically, your dog has individual needs that must be balanced against each other when it comes to health and growth. But Pugs are one of the breeds that may be able to benefit from specialist dog foods. This is because of their conformational and health issues, and their low energy level. Bespoke meals may be able to address their obesity issues and come in sizes that are easier for their teeth to pick up. You should feed a puppy four times a day, until about 6 months of age. Then you are able to reduce to three or two times if you like. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own.
From a very young age we train our puppies in a few things that aid them in being successful adults as family members, companions, service dogs, agility dogs. The Coltriever is a mid sized dog, they weigh between pounds and are built similar to a Golden Retriever. Available Puppies Our next litter will be in September ready for their new home in early November. Usually we have… Early Learning Each of my litters is born inside my home, rather than a kennel setting. This allows them to hear the sounds and smell the scents associated with a household from the very start. They are continually exposed to the everyday sights and sounds of a family home. This includes potentially scary sounds such as vacuum… About Our Puppies I have been raising Coltrievers in Lacey, Washington since .They are a designer dog, which is a mix of Golden Retriever and Border Collie breeds. They are a mid- sized dog, weighing between 40 and 80 pounds. The conformation of a Coltriever is similar to a Golden Retriever. Their colors vary with some black… She has turned out to be the sweetest, most fun dog ever. We love her so very much!! So thankful that I found that photo of her on your website last summer — one of our greatest blessings. Shelly Tigard Or. Our dog, Scout, was an instant playmate to my kids, aged 2 and 5. They are active, dedicatedly loyal, and have an intense eagerness to please their owners just for a little attention. Their obedience is quickly reflected through their affectionate and friendly nature, thus making them good with kids. Though some Gollies might tend to be shy, they are highly sociable, being in a jovial mood most of the time. Hence, they do not do well when kept alone for extended periods. Some dog enthusiasts think that so much of cheerfulness in their character failed to make them a good guardian. This assumption, however, is not correct, since their alertness is readily apprehensible from their barking instinct. Gollies are very active and responsive, making for excellent watchdogs. They would start to bark the moment they come across a stranger around and alert their family members about the same. Care Exercise These canids need regular exercise to burn down their calories. Take them out on a walk or jog on a routine basis to channelize their energy positively. Let them play in an enclosed yard if you have one. A total of around 90 minutes of daily physical activities is enough for this breed. Grooming The coat of the Golden Collie is average to long, and their shedding is moderate to high. For this, they need high maintenance, especially if your dog is double-coated, having a long and rough outer coat with a soft undercoat. Brush them regularly, at least times a week, so as to keep their coat smooth and glossy. Regular brushing also promotes blood flow and enhances hair growth. Hence, it is better to consult your breeder about the health history of its parents. Interactive toys that make sounds or dispense treats would give your dog the incentive to work harder. Try frozen Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter. This trick should work. To prevent your dog from being overly excited when your guests come in, teach him to display a controlled behavior when the doorbell rings. Ask your puppy to sit close to the door, and press the doorbell, holding a treat in your hand. If your puppy starts to show any sign of excitement, go close to it and ask it to calm down, showing the gift, but do not give it away. Next, repeat the process and do the same, if your dog shows any sign of excitement. Give the treat as it obeys you and sits down calmly. Doing this activity from time to time would help your dog will learn to put a check to its overly wild behavior as well as refrain from incessant barking habits. I fell in love with her, Queenie. I had to know what she was, where she was from, and how I could get one. I was told she was a Crooked Rooster Coltriever. Then, I remembered Crooked Rooster! I looked it up, contacted Holly and heard back within a couple hours. We talked on the phone for over an hour and a half. I fell in love with what Coltriever stood for and where they came from instantly. We set up a time to come tour the farm, and meet the puppies. We were placed in a pen with all the little all black Coltriever angels, and immediately saw Baloo. We knew he was the one. Baloo was the most perfect little squishy guy I had ever met. We chose him and have never looked back. He has changed our life for the better and has been the most amazing buddy we could have asked for. He loves other dogs so much, and so we contacted Holly to see if she had any litters available. She did! We went to meet them, and fell in love instantly with Tibbs, just like Baloo. Holly talked us through our meet and greet with the boys and what we should look for in how they interact. Holly is always very knowledgeable about her puppies and it makes you feel very safe about making this big of a life decision. I am now obsessed with our two Coltrievers, and am excited to have them apart of our life forever! Since they are known to shed frequently, they can cause allergies and other irritations. The basic grooming processes needed are: Brushing their furs weekly with a solid bristle brush to prevent them from shedding their coats too much; Cleaning their ears weekly to prevent ear infections; Bathing of one to two times a month; and Having their nails trimmed once they get too long. For first time owners who do not have experience with grooming dogs, this can be difficult because this breed requires high-maintenance grooming. You should see a veterinarian first to ask the grooming practices necessary for your dog. You need to follow the practices always. Excessive shedding is possible, so bath should be given at most twice a month. Their skins can also dry out if bathing is done irregularly. When bathing your dog, use a shampoo specialized for their furs to keep the quality. This mix is also prone to ear infections. Prevention is better than cure, so every week cleaning of the ear should be done. Their ears are one of the essential parts of their body. They cannot carry out their daily activities if their ears are in bad condition. Also, you must also trim their nails if they got too long to avoid future injuries from scratches. There are times that they even scratch their skins, so you must always monitor their nails. Golden Border Retriever Health Problems If the parents of the mixes have disorders, the chances are high that the offspring can inherit the disorder. However, there are cases in which the puppies are healthy even if one of the parents is diagnosed with a disease. It is better to check the pedigree of the crossbreed to verify if it is free from a severe illness. In biology, there is an incident known as hybrid vigor; it means that the offspring is better than its parents in several aspects such as physical characteristics and health. When you adopt a Golden Retriever Border Collie crossbreed, these are the following disorders that can attack your puppy: Skin Allergies Heart Diseases Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Because this breed shed too much, they are vulnerable to skin allergies. Once grooming is not taken care of, allergies can follow. Aside from the allergies that the shedding will bring you, your dog can also be affected by excessive removals of coats. Even though they are medium-sized dogs, bloating is also common to them. When the food matrix is not followed correctly, obesity can happen; it is a prerequisite to severe disorders. The excess weight of your dog can result in heart problems. As mentioned, this breed is highly intelligent, one of the mental diseases that this breed can develop is the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD which can be similar to humans. It will be a nuisance not just for your dog, but to you also. If they have their check-ups regularly, most of these mixes live up to 15 years. Make sure to prioritize their health. Border Collie Mixed with Golden Retriever Food Requirements Researches have proven that the amount of food intake in an individual dog is varying. The nutritional requirement of each dog is dependent on factors like weight, height, and the activities done by your dog. In the case of Border Collie mixed with Golden Retriever puppies, there is also no suggested food servings. For this breed, table foods or the foods consumed by humans cannot be fed to them. They are sensitive regarding the food they are eating. The dog food that you must give to the puppies should contain the necessary amount of vitamins and minerals for their growth. Puppies can be fed thrice in a day. As they grow, their needs for food is decreasing. To prevent obesity in dogs, a meal given twice in a day is recommended. Make a schedule on when to feed them so that they will be used to it; make sure to follow it regularly. In feeding your dogs, make sure to check the suggested amount of servings in the pack of the dog food that you bought. Monitoring the feeding habit of your dogs is essential. Their optimum performance will be achieved if they are given the right amount of food. There are also diets designed for highly skilled dogs. You should consult a veterinarian if you are planning a diet for your dog. Make sure to match their food matrix with their activities. If you want to give your pooch a happy and healthy life, start with nutrition. Avoid food that could be harmful to their health, such as the worst dry dog food. In case you brought a puppy to your home and the little munchkin is just getting used to regular food, take a look at the list of the best puppy food brands. Older dogs should also eat healthy food which is suggested in the best senior dry dog list. Your puppies come from two different parents, which makes them more likely to grow to love dry dog food for small dogs or best large breed dry dog food. They require long hours of exercise. An average of 90 minutes a day is recommended. The hours needed for their exercise is comparably longer to the number of minutes required by some breeds. The reason for this is their highly active lifestyle. Without exercise, the level of their energy can be difficult to match. Even if you are not supervising them, they can exercise on their own. Allocate a place in your home where they can play around. They will eventually stop exercising once they get tired because these dogs know their limits. If you have a backyard at your home, it is the perfect spot for your dog to exercise. Let it run around your yard. With that simple activity, risks of developing serious heart conditions can be reduced. Besides, extra calories can also be burned; therefore, they can be less prone to obesity. As discussed, Golden Collie can make a great exercise companion. You can have them join you in your exercise routines such as: Jogging. This means they are not considered a purebred dog or a designer dog breed. Border Collies are athletic, loyal dogs with a high energy level. They love to move and work with their families. You can also meet the mother dog in-person for an idea about what to expect regarding general size and temperament. On the Border Collie side, you have a highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dog that loves to be active and loves to work. Border Collies get along well with other dogs and children, but can be reserved or slightly suspicious towards strangers. Otherwise, they will find their own entertainment, which might result in them herding your children or a flock of sheep into your kitchen. The Border Collie Mix could take all of its characteristics from the Border Collie, from the other parent dog breed in the mix, or be any combination of characteristics from both. Before bringing a Border Collie Mix home, make sure you take some time to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed of the litter. This will give you a good idea of what possibilities to prepare for in your Border Collie Mix puppy. The Border Collie is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They may be a high-energy dog breed that prefers wide open spaces, but they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. A well-exercised, mentally engaged Border Collie is also okay with being alone. In terms of climate, this dog breed does best in a moderate climate as they do not do well in hot or cold climates. With a Border Collie Mix, you could end up with a dog that is moderately adaptable like the Border Collie. Or, you could end up with a dog more similar to the other parent breed. This could result in a more adaptable or less adaptable dog depending on the cross. Having a conversation with the breeder about the other parent breed can clear up some of the confusion and give you a better idea of what to expect. Border Collies are generally healthy, but can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. You can also ask about the genetic history of the parents and check out health screenings and health clearances to rule out some conditions. On the Border Collie side, you have a dog that is highly intelligent and eager to learn. They are generally difficult for the average person to train, so you will want to enroll in obedience and training classes with your Border Collie Mix puppy regardless of the other parent breed. Even if the dog breed in the cross is highly trainable for novice dog owners, there is the possibility the puppy will pick up Border Collie characteristics and be more difficult to train. A well-trained and properly socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a well-rounded dog, so make sure you start training and socialization early. Border Collies have a weather-resistant double coat that requires weekly brushing. They also have heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change and need to be brushed more frequently during this time. Depending on the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix, their coat could require more or less grooming. Finding out about the other parent breed from the breeder will give you an idea of what you could expect when it comes to coat. Regardless of the coat, all dogs need to have their nails trimmed, teeth brushed, and ears checked regularly. For most dogs, trimming nails once a month is sufficient. When it comes to dental care for your dog , brushing their teeth daily is recommended. This will help prevent the tartar and plaque buildup that leads to dental disease. If your Border Collie Mix has ears that drop down, they are more prone to moisture and developing an infection. Regularly checking them and cleaning as needed helps reduce the risk of ear infections in your dog. Border Collies have a lot of energy and never seem to get tired. They love to be moving and working. Plus, they were originally bred to run several miles a day and they still have the energy to do so. It is important that you are prepared to handle a high energy working dog when you choose a Border Collie Mix puppy. If the other parent breed is a couch potato, your puppy could end up having a lower energy level. A Border Collie tends to weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and usually stands 18 to 22 inches tall. The other parent breed could cause this to vary. So, be sure to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix. Also, make sure you stop by to meet the mother dog. There are always exceptions, but the size of the mother will at least give you something to work with. A Border Collie typically lives 12 to 15 years. You could expect a similar range in your Border Collie Mix with the understanding that the other parent breed could affect the range one way or the other. Featured Border Collie Mix Article. Both working breeds may do different tasks, but combining them makes an intelligent, loving, obedient, and agile offspring. Getting to know the Border Collie and Golden Retriever will already give a hint of what your Coltriever would be like in terms of looks and behavior. Through generations, this sheepdog which is the definition of the term Collie in Scottish became popular. Nowadays, Border Collies are touted as the smartest and the most excellent herding dog. They have a height of 18 to 22 inches 46 to 56 cm and a weight of 30 to 45 pounds 14 to 20 kg , where the females are a tad smaller. Black and white are the most common combination seen in the breed, though. They have high energy levels that would require lots of physical and mental stimulation. The popular and affectionate Golden Retriever A lord named Dudley Marjorbanks of the Scottish Highlands wanted to create a gundog that can adjust well to rugged grounds and rainy climates. After long years of breeding, he finally got the hardworking and smart Golden Retriever. Goldens are beautiful, large dogs that can stand between 21 to 24 inches 53 to 6 cm and can weigh up to 75 pounds 34 kg. They can either have wavy or straight hair, and feathering on their chest, underbody, legs, and tail. It can be light or dark gold, and some have a paler shade that gives a cream hue. Goldens are bright and are often used in different kinds of jobs, such as search and rescue missions. What does a Border Collie Golden Retriever mix look like? The Golden Border Collie will either inherit features from both its parents or more on one parent. Since both of the parent breeds have a fairly dense, double-layered coat, so will this hybrid. Some may get the rough and corded fur of the Border Collie, while others get the wavy and silky look of the Golden Retriever. The colors of the Border Golden Retriever can vary from black, black and white, yellow or golden, light or dark brown, chocolate, and red. Most of them have markings on their face and chest. Both the Borders and Goldens range from moderate to heavy shedders, so expect the Coltriever to do so as well. How big do Border Collie-Golden Retriever mixes get? When full-grown, this mixed breed can weigh 45 to 75 pounds 20 to 34 kg , with a height of 24 to 25 inches 61 to 64 cm. With the easy-going, happy, and kind personality of the Golden Retriever, and the eager to please, hardworking, and intelligent Border Collie, this crossbreed seems to be quite a perfect canine. Are Border Collie Golden Retrievers good family dogs? Border Golden Retrievers may not be an excellent guard dog or watchdog, but you can rely on them to be top-notch alarms! If you keep a pretty garden, it may be an issue because this pooch loves digging and getting dirty in the mud. Once she sees a muddy area, distract her away from it. Is the Golden Retriever Border Collie mix easy to train? This crossbreed is very trainable as it inherited the intelligence of the Border Collie and Golden Retriever. You can start training from puppyhood to help avoid behavioral issues from developing, too. Agile dogs will do excellent at agility rings, but with this mixed breed, they can do so much more! Their high energy levels would require them to be active as much as they can. As a pet, a lot of walking, running, hiking, and swimming would be great. For mental stimulation, there are a lot of puzzle toys where you can hide treats, and the dog has to figure out how to get it. Kick it up a notch because the Golden Border Retriever is considered as a sporting and working dog, too. They can be trained and used for herding, retrieving, and other canine sports. This designer pooch has a coat that helps it adjust in all weather conditions. Bathing should only be done once or twice a month, or when necessary, to avoid drying out her skin. Weekly brushing is needed to keep her hair from taking over your house. It should depend on factors such as their size, age, daily activities, and their current health condition. A Border Collie would generally require to 1, calories a day, while a Golden Retriever needs to 1, calories. For their mixed-breed offspring, it can be anywhere between those numbers. There are also dog foods that are best for working or sporting dogs. The Coltriever requires at least 90 minutes of exercise a day. With their high activity level, you can give your fur baby up to minutes, if your time and energy allow it. A technique you can do is start slow, then increase the time of exercise gradually as you go. Health problems the Golden Retriever and Border Collie cross may inherit No matter if the dog is pure or a crossbreed, all canines are susceptible to particular ailments. The breed parents may pass health conditions to their litter, especially the illnesses that they both have. Golden Retrievers are prone to heart problems like subvalvular aortic stenosis, eye conditions such as pigmentary uveitis, as well as cancer. Other diseases that the Border Collie and Golden Retriever mix may have are allergies, bloating, and elbow and hip dysplasia. Unfortunately, ectropion is actually a sought-after trait in many commonly affected breeds. It creates a diamond-shaped eye, which gives the dog a devoted and sad expression. This leads some people to breed specifically for ectropion. Your pet does not need to be sedated. In fact, pets should be awake for the veterinarian to appropriately determine their natural eyelid conformation, or shape. Treatment for Dog Ectropion Surgery is the only effective way to treat ectropion in dogs. This involves primarily shortening and tightening the eyelid. Recovery and Management of Dog Ectropion Recovery from ectropion surgery is rapid. Eyelid swelling will peak approximately 24 hours following surgery and can take two to four weeks to completely resolve. Dogs will be required to wear an Elizabethan collar following surgery to protect the sutures around their eyes. Topical eye medications may be prescribed after surgery depending on possible underlying corneal or lacrimal disease s. Oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and analgesics are often recommended after surgery as well. Sutures from ectropion surgery are removed 14 days after surgery, and the Elizabethan collar can be removed a few days after that. While surgical complications from ectropion surgery are rare, they can include: Under-correction of the eyelid will not resolve the underlying problem and will then require additional surgeries. Overcorrection of the eyelid can actually result in the formation of entropion when the eyelid grows inward. It causes trauma to the cornea. Self-trauma to the incision site usually occurs if the Elizabethan collar is removed too soon after surgery. Acquired cases of ectropion can occur when a dog has a facial injury and sustains neurological damage. I grew up in Tampa watching my father Vincent J. Naimoli start the Major League Baseball expansion.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? She has been creating content for print and online outlets for nearly two decades. This medical condition is characterized by a dog's eyelid or eyelids rolling outward. While it is not always a serious ailment that impacts your dog's eye function, it is something to learn more about and connect with your veterinarian to see how to best handle this condition with your pup. What Is Ectropion in Dogs? Ectropion is the opposite of entropion. In cases of genetic ectropion, it is often identified when the dog is still a puppy. But keep in mind that ectropion can also develop secondary to trauma to your dog's eye, especially if there is a laceration of the lower eyelid that does not heal correctly, McKinnon says. This can happen to a dog at any age. What Are the Symptoms of Ectropion in Dogs? If you notice that your dog's eyelids are sagging or rolling outward, they may have ectropion. Another thing to look for, according to McKinnon, would be discharge that builds up around their eyes. Because the eyelid is exposed, it may appear more red than usual as well because the openness of the eyelid exposes the ocular tissues, including the cornea and conjunctiva, to the environment. The only treatment for serious cases of ectropion is surgery, McKinnon says. An ocular lubricant may be recommended to cushion the eye tissues from any environmental debris in those breeds where ectropion is a desirable trait and blink function is normal," McKinnon says. You'll want to have your vet check your pooch's eyes twice a year to ensure the condition is not becoming more serious. Eye infections can result from the exposure of the lower conjunctiva. Diagnosis of ectropion In most cases the condition can be confirmed by visual examination. A thorough examination of the eyelids is important since ectropion can often occur in conjunction with entropion Click here to learn about entropion. Treatment of ectropion Ectropion is relatively well tolerated unless it is severe and surgical repair can generally be avoided by treating inflammation with a variety of eye drops. Most cases of ectropion that are not severe will require little if any intervention other than topical drops and ointments. Extremely severe cases of ectropion will not improve without surgical repair. There are several surgical procedures that may be used to reduce ectropion. Prevention of ectropion Because of the hereditary aspect of ectropion, affected dogs will likely transmit the defect. Affected dogs should probably not be bred. Acquired cases are generally associated with traumatic injury. The best way to avoid that is to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Click here to learn why you may be using the wrong leash. Prognosis of ectropion In all but the most severely affected cases the prognosis is quite good. The condition is generally well tolerated and in most cases will respond to simple medical care. Surgical correction may be required in severe cases. Though the surgery is relatively simple it can be very delicate and requires an experienced surgeon. Should I be concerned? How will we know if my dog has entropion too? If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian -- they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.

Degenerative Myelopathy Von Willebrand Disease Perhaps the most well-known is hip dysplasia, a condition that causes the hip joint to develop abnormally. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Generally speaking, however, a once-monthly bath is sufficient for most dogs. German Shepherd Puppies For Sale.
Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Nebraska Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Research: First and foremost, make sure that the breeder is reputable and has a good track record. There are many ways to research this, including reading online reviews and talking to other dog owners who have purchased Bernedoodles puppies from them. Health: Second, you want to make sure that the Bernedoodle puppies are healthy and well-cared for. Ask the breeder about the health of the parents and grandparents, and whether or not the puppies have been to the vet for a checkup. This means they should be introduced to a variety of people, and other animals, which will be beneficial for novice owners. Puppies from a reputable breeder are going to be more expensive than those from a backyard breeder. But, in the long run, a puppy from a reputable breeder is going to be healthier and have fewer behavior issues. Meet the Parents: If possible, you should meet the parents of the puppies before making your final decision. This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of temperament and appearance. But if you need more convincing, here are just a few reasons why a Bernedoodle might be the perfect pup for you. Coat: Bernedoodles come in three different coat types: wavy, curly, and straight. Temperament: Bernedoodles are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are also very loyal and affectionate with their families and get along well with children and other pets. Size: Bernedoodles come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh anywhere from pounds, while Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh in at pounds. Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest of the bunch, weighing in at 12 pounds or less. Health: Bernedoodles are generally a healthy breed, and are not known to suffer from any major health conditions. However, like all breeds, they can be susceptible to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. But with proper care and regular vet check-ups, your Bernedoodle should enjoy a long and healthy life. Deciding which dog breed is the best fit for you and your family might seem like an impossible task. Especially if the decision making is between two amazing dog breeds like the French Bulldog and the Pug. Both look lovably alike, even though here at the Frenchiestore we know they are not the same. There are distinct differences that tell the Frenchie from the pug dog breeds apart, and in many situations, which dog you pick may boil down to these differences. What do you need to know about their differences and how can this help pick the best fit for your family between these two loving companions? Here, we will explore all the similarities and differences between the Pug and the Frenchie dog breeds, as well as what might tip the scale for you when the decision comes right down to the wire. Appearance French Bulldog v. Pug The French Bulldog and the Pug are quite similar in height, weight and body type. The French bulldog and pugs body style is very similar for the most part however the Frenchie looks stocky and athletic, while the pug looks stocky and more wrinkly just like the English bulldog breed. The pug has a large round head with big eyes and deep wrinkles. The Pug has a curly tail while the French bulldog has a naturally short tail without being docked. They really do look similar but these differences in their appearances can help you tell them apart. They make great apartment dogs and are usually friendly towards strangers. They have a lot of love to give and they are very affectionate towards their owners. They trail after you everywhere you go, almost like having a dog as your shadow. You look back and there they are even when you go to the bathroom. Due to the fact that they crave companionship and attention, leaving them alone for long periods of time will trigger separation anxiety. Do not be deceived by their small statures, they will wreak havoc to your furniture, your pillows, and everything in your home. They do not like to be left alone for too long. These dogs can be really silly and amusing, they just want to make you laugh. However, when it comes to Pug vs French Bulldog personality, the Pug is the biggest clown with its mischievous antics and the Pug never really outgrows this puppy persona. Although neither of the breeds need much exercise, sometimes, the Pug is more active than the French Bulldog and tends to bark more though not excessively. This is a factor to consider if you have noise restrictions in your apartment. Colors and Coat of the Frenchie and pug dog Pugs usually come in all black and fawn colors with a black mask while the French bulldog can be fawn, brindle, all black, cream or white. And they can be without or with a mask. There are exception to these rules such as albino pugs or French Bulldogs, they always have blue eyes and the albinism is usually caused by a prevalent health issue. Rare colors in French Bulldogs include but not limited to:blue Frenchie, blue pied Frenchie, blue fawn Frenchie , blue brindle Frenchie, black and tan Frenchie, blue and tan Frenchie, lilac and tan Frenchie, chocolate and tan Frenchie, brindle in tan points, pure black French Bulldogs, merle Frenchie, fawn merle Frenchie, blue merle Frenchie, chocolate Frenchie , choco pied Frenchie, choco fawn Frenchie, Sable French Bulldogs, Isabella French bulldogs etc. Height, Weight and Size Both dogs are small sized companion dogs and are ideal for apartment living. But there are some notable differences. The Pug measures from about 10 to 14 inches in height while the French bulldog measures from 11 to 15 inches. The Pug weighs between 14 to 18 pounds while the French bulldog weighs from 20 to 30 pounds. The French bulldog is stockier, weighs more and looks athletic when compared to the Pug who weighs less, is not as stocky and looks like a couch potato which is a bit ironic as they can be more active than the Frenchie. Pugs live between 12 to 15 years while the French bulldog lives 10 to 12 years. However, a dog can live longer if their diet, care, lifestyle and exercise is met. Both the Pug and the French bulldog do not have excessive exercise requirements. A few walks around the block and some mental stimulation is really all that is needed to keep them in shape. The Pug needs about 40 minutes of exercise per day while the French bulldog only requires 20 — 30 minutes of exercise and frequent breaks. When caring for your Frenchie or Pug, you should know that they both require frequent grooming. With French Bulldogs, you can brush their coat 2 — 3 times a week as they do not shed so much but with the Pug, their coats have to be brushed daily and outdoors. This is to make clean up easier as they shed a lot more than the Frenchie. In addition to brushing them, they both need their wrinkles constantly cleaned to avoid skin infections or tear stains, they will also require regular baths, nail trimmings and teeth brushing. Cost, Training and Health Issues of the pug and Frenchie puppies French Bulldogs cost more than Pugs, this is because a Frenchie cannot reproduce or give birth without the help of a vet and this adds to the expense. Those prices reflect the common and standard colors of French Bulldogs. Both breeds are really intelligent and can learn exceptionally well with the right motivation but they are both stubborn and challenging to train or housebreak. The Pug is the more challenging of the two and you will need a lot of patience. Both the Pug and the Frenchie are prone to a long list of health issues including breathing conditions, this is mainly due to their facial structure. But the Pug is especially prone to hip dysplasia, luxating patella, epilepsy, skin allergies and eye problems. He is also prone to a neurological disease which causes an inflammation of the brain tissues that results ultimately in death. While the French bulldog is especially prone to Intervertebral Disc Disease, this can occur from a fall. That is, the injury from falling can cause a serious disease and infection. Breeding is also very difficult for Frenchies, they are usually artificially inseminated and give birth through CS. These treatments are part of the reason why a French bulldog is so costly. Now that you have all the information you need, it should be easier to make a choice. In making this decision, you should consider your living space, your budget, your lifestyle and the amount of time you have to spend with a dog. The solution might be to get a Frug! What is a Frug? A Frug is crossbreed between the Pug and the French bulldog. And since both of his parents are bred for companionship, you are in for one of the best canine buddies ever. In looks, the Frug is very likely to inherit a perfect blend of his parents. With the wrinkled face of the Pug, large erect ears of the Frenchie, short curly tail, a wide smile and big round eyes, you can expect the Frug to melt the heart of everyone he meets. All Frugs look different and can look more like the Frenchie or the pug and it would depend on how strong and dominant the parents genes are. A Frug is very sociable, lovable and incredibly stubborn. If you are a first-time dog owner, or an inexperienced dog parent you might not want to start with such a stubborn dog breed. Frug puppies need proper training in order to develop into well-rounded sociable dogs, if you think that you are up to the task. Then, roll up your sleeves and go for it. This is because everybody wants one and because the French Bulldog which is usually the mother requires artificial insemination and the entire process is very expensive and requires deep expertise. Frugs do incredibly well as pets for a family, a couple, a single dweller, anybody. This breed is so full of character and they really want to impress you. Choose a breed and enjoy your canine journey. Leave a comment. Pug vs. French Bulldog vs. These three breeds are quizzical, lovable, and totally snuggable. Can you tell them apart? By Tracey L. Kelley After loving 19 cats, 11 dogs, and a canary, Tracey married someone allergic to all those creatures. Thankfully, she receives oodles of animal goodness sharing stories on Daily Paws! When not traveling, teaching yoga, or doing voiceover projects, she's an editorial strategist and developer for print, digital, and multimedia platforms. French bulldog vs. English bulldog is like pondering if you want ice cream or more ice cream: no matter what, there's complete goodness. She says all three of these breeds are great, fun-loving family companions. She adds that pugs are full of personality—just funny, entertaining dogs who love to love. English bulldogs are courageous, tenacious, and friendly all packed in a bruiser build. She adores this breed's shocking intelligence and clown-like nature, "as if they're trying to make you laugh! Let's take a closer look at these sweet mugs. More than 2, years ago, emperors and other royalty favored these animated pups. Ancient legends even suggest that their wrinkles resemble Chinese language symbols for good luck. Does this mean they're quite accustomed to living lush lives and being adored? Totally quirky but clever and full of licks and cuddles for their people, pugs are super with children of all ages, especially once they've graduated from puppy kindergarten. A certain, how you say, je ne sais quoi. Although originally from England and considered a toy bulldog crossbreed, this sparky fireplug took Paris by storm in the s, and became a status symbol in both high and low society circles. Charming, smart, and playful, Frenchies are easily the life of the party, so early socialization and training activities with you get their tails wagging. Got a couch? House full of kids? No problem. Want to amble across the yard and back again? Daily exercise goals met. But like all good dogs, he responds best to positive reinforcement training , and might surprise you with a special trick or two. Similarities and Differences Among the Pug vs. English Bulldog Now for the moment of truth: just how to tell these three delightful doggies apart. Fortunately, this chart might help. Take a peek! Here are some additional pointers when you're comparing a pug vs. French bulldog or, if you're totally enamored with bullies, a French bulldog vs. English bulldog. Size One reason why these pooches are such family favorites is while they might sprawl all over you, they generally don't take up a lot of room. For example: Pugs, while roly-poly, only weigh 14—18 pounds and are about 11—13 inches tall. They fit perfectly in adorable bike baskets where they can enjoy passing scenery. French bulldogs are also 11—13 inches tall, but slightly heavier at 16—28 pounds. To have the best window view, they might need a car booster seat while cruising down the highway with you. English bulldogs are more wide than tall, weighing 40—50 pounds and standing 14—15 inches high. He'd enjoy the farmers' market from the chill perspective inside a comfy stroller —as long as you feel like pushing him! Appearance Pugs, French bulldogs, and English bulldogs each look dashing, but here's how to tell the differences between them: Pugs are double-coated dog breeds with tight curly tails, and have either apricot, fawn, tan, or silver coats with a black mask, or they're all black. They're a bit longer in the forelegs, too. Frenchies are short-haired and nub-tailed, and flash multiple coat colors, such as white, cream, fawn, black, and black and white, plus a speck more flair with brindle , flecked, speckled, or ticked patterns. English bulldogs are also short-haired breeds, sporting coat colors of white, fawn, and red. They also like to bust out a few stylish patterns, such as brindle, flecked, speckled, or ticked. This big boi has the broadest chest of the three and a suggestion of a tail. Ears When you see these three running hither and yon in the dog park , it's really easy to tell who's who: Pugs' ears flop to the side like a rain-soaked blowout. French bulldogs have those famed bat ears—all the better to hear squirrels with, my dear! The ears on bulldogs are somewhere in-between: floppy but slightly angled in the direction of a rattling treat bag. Health The snorts, snerks, and snores of pugs, French bulldogs, and English bulldogs might be adorable to most fans of flat-faced pups, but you need to take great care with them. As brachycephalic breeds , they have shorter muzzles and skulls than other dogs, which creates narrow, restricted airways. This means they sometimes have trouble breathing, especially when it's hot and humid. This is what your dog is doing when panting ," Mize says. Not by a long shot. Pugs definitely put your robot vacuum to the test! Oh, and watch out for the drool! Frenchies and English bulldogs have quite a bit of it. We think each of these mushy mugs deserve oodles of snugs, but it's essential to pick a pup that fits your lifestyle. If you'd adore a spunky pup who goes the distance, pugs are one the longest living dog breeds 13—15 years! Not to be outdone, French bulldogs will be by your side for 10—12 years, and slip into an apartment or urban living vibe rather easily because they don't need a yard or a lot of space to be content. Easygoing English bulldogs will hang out just about anywhere for 8—10 years, especially if there are children in the house. Great for families or those living alone seeking canine companionship," Mize says. Was this page helpful? Which breed is healthier? Pug vs French Bulldog Popularity Although they are both rapidly rising in popularity, the French Bulldog has consistently been more regularly registered than the Pug. At least with the American Kennel Club! And there arent any signs that the Pug is likely to catch up any time soon. Which Breed Is Bigger? Both the Pug and French Bulldog breeds are small-sized companion dogs that are ideal for apartment living. However, there are noticeable differences in their shape and build. The Frenchie is stockier compared to the Pug and is the larger dog of the two breeds. Pugs on average weigh around 16lbs and stand about 12 inches high. Frenchies on the other hand are about 25lbs in weight and often nearer to 14 inches tall. Differences In Appearance The Pug has a curly, pig-like tail and small floppy ears. The Frenchie has a short, straight tail and is famous for its bat-like ears. They sit alert and upright, and are shaped like large triangles. Colors of the Pug are either black all over or fawn with a black mask. Frenchies come in a variety of shades and colors that include fawn, brindle, and white or the same color all over with a splash of white. Both breeds shed, although your average Pug will do so more prolifically. However, a good weekly groom will be enough to stay on top of either of these short coats. Their wrinkled skin areas will also benefit from cleaning at least weekly with a skin friendly pet wipe. And those potentially over crowded teeth will need brushing every evening to keep gum disease at bay. Pug vs French Bulldog Personality When it comes to the Pug vs French Bulldog contest, the Pug is a clear winner, as the biggest clown of the dog world with its mischievous antics! Despite both breeds having low exercise requirements, the Pug is more active and alert than the laid-back Frenchie and tends to bark more, although not excessively. Both breeds are friendly, affectionate dogs who love people and are good with children and other pets. However, they dislike being left alone for extended periods, which can lead to behavioral issues. Differences in Training Both of these breeds are renowned for being clever but stubborn. Fortunately with positive training methods any dog is willing to learn, you just need the right motivation. Pug vs French Bulldog Health Sadly both of these cute looking breed come with some big potential health problems. Several of them they have in common, as they relate to the shape of their faces. Dogs with short muzzles often suffer from brachycephalic obstruction airway syndrome. Their short snouts cause breathing and over heating problems. These can become worse to a dangerous extent when the weather is hot, during exercise or if they are allowed to gain too much weight. Pugs are also prone to other health issues like hip dysplasia, luxating patella, epilepsy, skin allergies, and eye problems. There is also a neurological disease unique to this breed called Pug dog encephalitis. This is an inflammation of the brain tissues causing pain and seizures, resulting ultimately in death. Intervertebral disc disease is common in French Bulldogs, as they are more vulnerable than other breeds due to their unusual shape. Breeding in both dogs is difficult, due to their narrow hips, and most female dogs are artificially inseminated, often giving birth by Caesarean section. The lifespan of Pugs is longer than the French Bulldog. Home » Blog » Pug vs. Pug vs. When it comes to adopting a small breed puppy, for sure you will come across the Pug and the French Bulldog breeds. No wonder, as both breeds are adorable looking, great companions, and ideal for indoor living. Their personality, intelligence, activity level, and trainability is also introduced. We compare their health characteristics and life span, and finally, their prices. History and Origins Despite the many similarities in appearance, Pugs and French Bulldogs have completely different origins. Pugs are an ancient breed without any doubt. This breed can date back at least years to ancient China where they were almost a sacred animal. Pugs were extremely popular among the royal family and the nobility, sometimes even guarded by soldiers. This breed only arrived in Europe during the 16th century, when China began trading with European nations. Source: a-z-animals. The smaller versions of English Bulldogs, the so-called toy Bulldogs were favored by lacemakers, to keep them warm while working. After the industrial revolution, these women had to move to France where handmade laces were still appreciated. The standing bat-ear of their dogs was soon recognized and adored by Parisian women, and the French Bulldog soon became extremely popular among the French artists. As artists were mostly supported by the rich novelty, French Bulldogs became the symbol of wealth. As both Pugs and French Bulldogs are adored by many, the idea of crossbreeding became inevitable. When you mix a Pug and a Frenchie parent, you will get a Frug! Frugs are a true mix of their parents, containing both of their most loved characteristics. Source: petguide. Due to their brachycephalic face structure, both breeds are known as loud snorers. The other main difference is the tail. Pugs have large, flat round heads, while Frenchies have square-shaped heads. When you look at their body structure, you will find that Pugs have a more round body, while Frenchies look more athletic compared to Pugs. They are similar in size, but Frenchies are a few pounds heavier due to their muscular body, and a few inches taller than Pugs. An adult French Bulldog can weigh anywhere between 17 to 33 lb, and grow as tall as 12 inches. A Pug on the other hand can weigh 14 to 18 lbs, and grow as tall as 11 inches. Source: vetstreet. On the other hand, French Bulldogs come in a large variety of colors , which we love. This gives the prospective owners a chance to express their personalities too. Besides the usual plain colors such as black, red, beige, blue, or lilac, you can also choose to adopt a puppy with interesting and unusual coat color. Merle color Frenchies have dark spots all over their bodies, while tanned Frenchies have a solid base color with red or beige markings on their paws, chest, bottom, cheek, and eyebrows. Pugs are double-coated dogs, so they tend to shed a lot, especially during the summer. On the other hand, the color of a French Bulldog is single-layered with little to no odor and minimal shedding. The coat of both breeds is short, although you can adopt a rare type of Frenchie, the Fluffy Frenchie with a longer coat and furry ears. They both are ideal as family dogs, as they are super loving and great with kids. Pugs are lazier and require shorter walks and play times than Frenchies. Therefore, Pugs are ideal for elderly owners, who are no longer capable of taking long walks or playing active games like hide-and-seek. This can lead to serious health issues at Pugs, which we will cover later on in this article. Training In your decision-making, the trainability of Pugs and French Bulldogs should also play a role. After all, you will be the one that has to live with the puppy for many, many years! When it comes to the trainability of Pugs and French Bulldogs, there is no meaningful difference though. They both are stubborn and more of a free-will breed. They respond well to positive reinforcement, especially if it includes some snacks and treats. The way to their heart is through their belly, so be prepared with a huge pile of healthy dog treats once you start the dog training. Source: post. The bulgy eyes of Pugs are a common source of health issues. Pugs are more prone to obesity, and generally have more health problems compared to French Bulldogs, although they live longer life. The average life expectancy of a Pug is years, and the average life expectancy of a French Bulldog is years. Ultimate Guide. They were originally bred from British bulldogs in England and used for bull baiting until the pursuit was outlawed under the Cruelty to Animals Act of .At this point, these small dogs simply became prized for their cuteness and they landed in France courtesy of lace workers from Nottingham who moved to Normandy after being displaced during the industrial revolution. Pugs, meanwhile, are thought to have hailed from China around BCE. It makes them one of the oldest breeds of dog and their role was to entertain Chinese emperors — a position which saw them being treated like royals to such an extent that they even had their own mini-castles and protective soldiers. Buddhist monks kept them as pets in Tibet and they ended up in Europe in the 16th century where they became popular in more royal households, including that of Queen Victoria. Short answer? Although Bulldogs and Pugs look similar thanks to their flat faces, wrinkles and small build, there is no genetic connection. Scientists have proven this by carrying out DNA tests which clearly show Pugs sharing origins with the Pekingese rather than Bulldogs. Of course, this merely serves to make the similarities between these two breeds all the more curious. There is, however, a genetic mutation linked to flat faced dogs and, in that sense, they do at least have something inherent in common. French Bulldog vs Pugs: What's the difference? These breeds are similar in so many ways. As well as having short snouts and small bodies, their flat faces make breathing difficult, the both drool and they can pack on the pounds. They also have a very playful nature but you want to know what's different about them, right? Well, pugs are generally between 10 and 14 inches tall 25 to 35 centimeters and they also weigh between 13 and 18 pounds 6 to 8 kilograms. French bulldogs are generally larger overall, between 12 and 13 inches, 30 and 33 centimeters and they also weigh more, between 18 and 33 pounds, 8 to 15 kilograms. In that sense, you could put the two breeds side by side and see which is bigger and stockier. But the differences don't stop there. French Bulldogs have sticking out, bat-like ears and a straight tail while pugs have smaller, floppy ears and a curled tail. Frenchies also come in many different colors such as white, fawn, brindle and cream whereas pugs are fawn or black. A French Bulldog's fur is fine, smooth and short but a pug's fur feels more coarse and it's generally thicker. Both Frenchies and Pugs are a joy to have around and they are among the friendliest dog breeds. They are affectionate and loving, fitting in well within any family. They also get on incredibly well with younger members of a household and if they've been socialized early any pets you may have too. Neither are particularly active, though. While they're sufficiently motivated to follow you around the house, they spend most of their lives asleep. Even so, they have plenty of time to play and, of the two, pugs are perhaps the goofiest, which is why they're known to be the clowns of the canine world. Well, you'll have little trouble training either of these highly intelligent breeds. Since they are eager to please, they are very good at learning and following your commands and instructions. You just need to be firm and consistent in your training and, in the case of pugs, be aware that they can become easily distracted: something that can be sorted with a light tap on the nose to get them to focus or the best dog treats for a job well done. The main area of concern is potty training! Both Frenchies and pugs are stubborn little dogs and it can take many, many months to get them to control their bodily functions so be prepared for a messy household in the meantime of the two, the pug is more challenging. It doesn't help that both breeds have small-capacity bowels and bladders which means they need to empty more regularly. But with consistency and patience, they'll eventually get the message. French Bulldog vs Pugs: Exercise needs There are two conflicting realities here. On the one hand, both breeds need exercise otherwise they can become obese Frenchies in particularly love to eat — and fart, as we discuss in our six fascinating Fench Bulldog facts! On the other hand, getting either breed to engage in 30 minutes of walking each day, split into two sessions may be a little tricky: neither breed will be champing at the bit to get outside for a walk. They're rather lazy and they'd generally like to chill. In many ways, you can't blame them. Flat-faced dogs have difficulty breathing so if you can actually get them out of the best dog bed and ready for exercise, don't force them to become over-active. It's always a good idea, with both breeds, to let them take things at their own pace by engaging them with the best dog toys. And be wary of leaving them alone for too long — you'll need to know how to reduce separation anxiety in dogs if you're going to bring one of these breeds into your home. French Bulldog vs Pugs: Grooming There's a big difference here! French Bulldogs are relatively low maintenance. They are light shedders so they only need to be groomed once a week using the best dog brushes and you can get away with bathing them monthly. That's not to say, they are a cheap breed to own since other factors come into play see our guide to how much a French bulldog costs to own for more details but grooming isn't going to set you back all that much. Pugs, however, are heavy shedders as we point out in our 10 facts about pugs so you really need to be investing in the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair if you have this breed. Grooming three times a week will help to prevent too much mess but be aware that black pugs tend to shed more than the fawn-colored ones because they are double-coated. More about dogs.

Prevalence: So-so His body is covered in a close-fitting, wiry and weatherproof coat. He is characterized by an otter head, and his skull is moderately broad and flat with plenty of width between the eyes and ears. His cheeks are slightly full. His expression and body posture give an alert, fearless and determined look that typifies the breed. Border terriers are strongly put together, suggesting endurance and agility. Colors include red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten. A small amount of white may be allowed on the chest. A dark muzzle is characteristic and desirable. Personality: The Border terrier is atypical of the other terrier breeds. Naturally bred to run peacefully with foxhounds, they were bred for a less dog-aggressive temperament than terriers who hunted primarily on their own. Although the standard says that "in the field he is hard as nails, game as they come and driving in attack," it also describes the border as "affectionate, obedient, and easily trained. If you are looking for just a part-time dog or one to put in the kennel, the border is not for you. They want to be part of the family. Although not constantly demanding your attention, they do want to be with you. Borders are not big barkers, but will let you know when someone is at the door. Since they were trained to follow fox to the ground, you can expect a border to be a determined digger. A border was bred to think for himself, which can be both his most endearing and most frustrating quality. Living With: Borders are not a high-maintenance breed. They do not require frequent bathing, and toweling off your dog is enough when he is wet and dirty. Too many baths tend to soften the harsh coat that is a natural dirt repellant, and they do not normally have strong odor. Use a slicker brush. A border will shed minimally, but his coat will not shed out completely without help. The border is usually hand stripped twice a year. If you choose to go with the natural look and not strip the coat, it will have a bit more odor than a stripped coat. You can clip the coat, but clipping is not done by many owners. Borders are active dogs that love and need regular exercise in fairly large quantities. Being terriers, they are also active and noisy when someone comes to the door and must be the first to meet the visitors. Border greetings are quite profuse. Chewing is something that all puppies do, but many borders don't outgrow the chewing stage. No such thing as a border-proof toy exists. Common household objects are prime targets. If you do not want to crate your dog when you go out or have your house strewn with suitable chew toys, then perhaps the border terrier may not be the dog for you. The border can get along with other dogs and cats if they were there first but remember other small furry pets like mice and gerbils may look like prey to them. Even the best-trained border will dash off after a squirrel or rabbit, so keep him on a leash. They are quite adaptable to different circumstances, and will do well in big cities, in small towns, or in the country, as long as they have their family to dote on them. Expect your Border to be a part of your family for 13 to 14 years. Since they gain weight easily, care should be taken to match food intake with proper exercise. These hills form the border country between England and Scotland. As hills are abundant in this area, farmers' stock was terrorized by the powerful hill foxes. To hunt and kill these foxes, the farmers and shepherds needed a plucky terrier with enough length of leg to follow a horse but small enough to follow a fox to ground. The dogs had to be strong and tireless with a weather-resistant coat to withstand the mists and bone-soaking rains of the hills. This small, hardy, working terrier could be found in the homes of almost all border farmers, shepherds and sportsmen in this region. The border terrier may well be one of the oldest terriers in Great Britain. Seen in many of the great hunt paintings, they have been used as a hunt terrier by the border Ffoxhounds since .As a specific breed, they were shown first in agricultural society shows in Northumberland in the late 19th century. Never having reached the ring-show popularity of other terriers, the border terrier has remained true to its original form and function. An active terrier of medium bone, his makeup depicts strength and endurance even though he is narrow in the shoulder and body, a form that leads to the function for following foxes down the narrowest of holes and following the horses all day in the hunt. The border is built to do his job. This breed has no unbalanced exaggerations. He is moderate in all aspects of his appearance. He is "rather narrow in shoulder, body and quarter. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Border Terrier Overview The Border Terrier is a small dog with an alert gaze, a powerful drive to hunt and dig , the typical high terrier energy level, and a good-natured personality. After that intro, you may be quickly hitting the back button to hunt for a different breed — and that may be exactly what you should do. The Border Terrier is not for everyone, and before taking one home, you should be fully committed to taking his antics in stride with an amused shake of your head. But for the right people, Border Terriers are wonderful dogs who play hard and love harder. Border Terriers need a securely fenced yard to keep them safe. This is not a dog that does well left out in the yard all day. To keep your Border and the neighbors happy and your yard free of holes, give your Border at least half an hour per day of vigorous exercise. Besides keeping him entertained, exercise will help keep your Border trim — this small breed is prone to obesity. With their needs for companionship and activity met, Borders are happy dogs who generally get along well with everyone from children to strangers. The Border Terrier can make you laugh and cry and laugh some more. He approaches training with an independent spirit, but he wants to please. When left to their own devices, they can be noisy and destructive. These escape artists will find the way out of a fenced yard if given the time and opportunity. Border Terriers have a high threshold for pain. Border Terriers have a natural instinct to dig. Rather than fighting it, give your Border Terrier a place of his own to dig or put his digging drive to work with fun games. Border Terriers are active and bouncy. They love jumping up on people to greet them. Border Terriers love to chew. Some will grow out of chewing inappropriate items such as furniture and shoes, but others enjoy chewing throughout their lives. Giving them plenty of appropriate chew toys is the best way to avoid expensive replacements and unnecessary vet bills. Border Terriers have a high prey drive and will chase, attack, and even kill neighborhood cats, squirrels or other small animals. Border Terriers do well with other dogs and with family cats if the cat is raised with the Border Terrier or lived in the home before the Border Terrier. Border Terriers can make excellent companions for kids, but they can be rambunctious, especially when young, and can unintentionally hurt small children. Borders were built to have a long, narrow, flexible body, the better to squeeze through narrow holes and flush foxes out of their hiding places, and legs long enough to follow the horses during a foxhunt. Early evidence of the breed includes a painting by Arthur Wentworth of two Border Terriers. You would certainly have seen him at agricultural shows in Northumberland in the late 19th century, but on the whole dog fanciers took little notice of him until the early 20th century. For most of his existence, the Border Terrier has been an unknown, and his people prefer that he stay that way if it means protecting him from the ravages of popularity. Currently, he ranks 81st among the breeds and varieties registered by the American Kennel Club. Border Terrier Size The Border Terrier is built to be big enough to keep up with hunters on horseback and small enough to squeeze into tight spaces. Males weigh 13 to .They stand 10 to 11 inches. Socialization helps ensure that your Border Terrier puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Border Terrier Health Border Terriers are generally healthy, but like all breeds , they can get certain health conditions. Hip dysplasia can exist with or without clinical signs. Some dogs exhibit pain and lameness on one or both rear legs. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. If your dog displays signs of hip dysplasia, talk to your vet. Medication or surgery can help. Heart defects of various kinds can affect Border Terriers, the most common of which is pulmonic stenosis, a narrowing of the valve that separates the right chamber of the heart from the lungs. If your Border Terrier has a heart murmur, it may indicate that he has a heart condition that will need to be monitored and treated. Heart murmurs are caused by a disturbance in the blood flow through the chambers of the heart. If disease is evident, as diagnosed through x-rays and an echocardiogram, the dog may require medication, a special diet, and a reduction in the amount of exercise he gets. The best way to avoid heart defects is to check that the breeder has not used dogs with heart defects in her breeding program. There are three different types of incorrect bites. An overshot bite is when the upper jaw extends past the lower jaw. This causes difficulties in grasping; in more severe cases, the lower teeth can bite into the roof of the mouth, causing serious injuries. An undershot bite is when the lower jaw extends out past the upper jaw. Although it is standard in some breeds, it can cause difficulties in Border Terriers and may need to be corrected with surgery. The last type of incorrect bite is wry mouth, a twisting of the mouth caused when one side grows more quickly than the other. It causes difficulties with eating and grasping. If this is the case, wait until the puppy has finished growing. Corrective surgeries can include tooth extraction, crown height reductions, or the use of spacers. Dogs with incorrect bites, even if the bite is corrected surgically, should not be used for breeding. Seizures can be caused by a number of factors and can occur at any time. Signs of a seizure include sudden trembling or shaking, sudden urination, stiffness, staring, slight muscle spasms, or a loss of consciousness. It is caused when the patella, which has three parts-the femur thigh bone , patella knee cap , and tibia calf -is not properly lined up. This causes lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. It is a condition that is present at birth although the actual misalignment or luxation does not always occur until much later. The rubbing caused by patellar luxation can lead to arthritis, a degenerative joint disease. There are four grades of patellar luxation, ranging from grade I, an occasional luxation causing temporary lameness in the joint, to grade IV, in which the turning of the tibia is severe and the patella cannot be realigned manually. This gives the dog a bowlegged appearance. Severe grades of patellar luxation may require surgical repair. Signs include weight gain, thinning coat, dry skin, slow heart rate, and sensitivity to cold. As hypothyroidism is a progressive condition, if you notice any of these signs, have your dog checked by your vet. Cryptorchidism is a condition in which one or both testicles on the dog fail to descend and is common in small dogs. Testicles should descend fully by the time the puppy is 2 months old. If a testicle is retained, it is usually nonfunctional and can become cancerous if it is not removed. When the neutering takes place, a small incision is made to remove the undescended testicle s ; the normal testicle, if any, is removed in the regular manner. Border Terrier Care Border Terriers are family dogs and should live indoors with their people, not tied out in the backyard — although they do enjoy having access to a yard. Just make sure the fence is high and secure — these dogs can be expert escape artists. Without enough exercise, Border Terriers are prone to weight gain and boredom. Boredom can lead to destructive behavior and lots of barking. They quickly learn house rules and other important dog etiquette such as housetraining , walking on leash , and greeting people politely although they may never give up the habit of jumping up. When it comes to more advanced training, the real challenges begin. Border Terriers were developed to be independent because, during foxhunts, they had to work at a distance from their handlers. To train your Border Terrier, look for a trainer who understands the terrier mentality and uses positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play, and food rewards. Given a regular schedule and plenty of opportunities to go to the bathroom outside, Border Terriers are easy to housetrain. The best place for a Border Terrier is with you. Leash training is another must. This drive does not fade with age; if anything, it becomes stronger. How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age , build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Border Terrier in good shape by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Border Terrier, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. His skin is thick and loose — something that came in handy during his fox-hunting days, as it protects him from bites. The Border Terrier coat can be red, blue and tan, grizzle and tan, or wheaten pale yellow or fawn. Some have a small patch of white on the chest. Weekly brushing and periodic stripping every five to six months of the rough terrier coat will keep your Border looking neat and tidy. Your grooming kit should include a fine comb, a natural bristle brush, and a stripping knife unless you opt for having a professional groomer take care of stripping the coat. Stripping involves plucking the dead hair by hand or removing it with a stripping knife or other stripping tool. Their coat naturally repels dirt and, with weekly brushing and a wipe-down with a damp cloth when needed, it should stay fairly clean. When you do bathe him, use a shampoo made for the rough terrier coat to help maintain its texture. Daily is better. Trim his nails once or twice a month, as needed. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth and ears. As with any dog, always teach children how to approach and touch your Border Terrier, and supervise all interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear pulling from either party. They do best with dogs of the opposite sex. Border Terrier Rescue Groups Border Terriers are sometimes bought without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one, and these dogs often end up in the care of rescue groups, in need of adoption or fostering. Other Border Terriers end up in rescue because their owners have divorced or died.

We recently finished our 6 private lessons and have moved on to our 12 group lessons. I LOVE that she listens because we've bonded through our training and not because I've bribed her with treats. Both Malancy and Brad have been amazing to work with and the training has been so consistent. We're new to group lessons, but it's already been great to take what we've learned at home and now apply it in a group setting with other dogs and dog parents going through the same program. DTE really wants you and your dog to bond and succeed. They're super professional, supportive, and non-judgmental. I also love how the training I've been doing with our dog is translating into her also respecting and obeying my husband and kids with the same commands and praise. At first, it sounded like a lot of money to me to pay for dog training, but I promise you it's worth every penny. I love knowing that by the time we fully graduate from training if not sooner , we're going to be able to take Pepper anywhere dogs are allowed without having to worry about her or fight with her to get her to obey. If we decide to go the therapy dog route after completing our initial training, I'll definitely be sticking with DTE for that training as well. He made training simple and easy to understand and was available anytime I had questions or concerns. My beautiful little Sheltie has blossomed since training began last spring. We have a ways to go to become a bit more social, but the change in my dog and in her level of confidence is remarkable! Thanks to Jason and to Dog Training Elite. I would recommend you to anyone! They have taken our 1-year old Great Dane and have helped us transform her into the best, most well behaved dog I have ever owned. Eric, Jason, and Parker are pure professionals. Thanks to them the same out-of-control Great Dane is working to become the service dog that I need. I had Parker literally meet me and my anxious kids the day after we brought our 8 week old puppy home to TN on an airplane. Parker got us set off on the right start and helped alleviate so much of our anxiety about training our first dog. Eric then helped us during dog training build the skills that we needed to be successful at home. I loved the in-home training so that we could focus on personalizing our training and getting our pup used to the daily routine of our busy home. Plus my kids could also get trained since they were the ones who needed to learn how to be consistent and clear with the commands. Here we are at 5 months old and our puppy is such a joy to have in our home - all thanks to Parker and Eric, our dog whisperers. I feel so much more confident as an owner and have no problems taking him out in public. One of my favorite things about Parker and Eric is their strong but fair approach. This training was so worth it! Highly recommend.
