Lifespan Sociability The Silver German Shepherd is a real spectacle—and among the rarest of all shepherd colors. Because of its rarity, you may have trouble finding a breeder near you. But always do a local search—and be prepared for the cost associated with the color. Also, they may have you sign a puppy contract stating that you will return the pup if you are ever unable to care for them. Finding a Silver Sable Shepherd at a shelter is unlikely, but still possible. If you do, you will likely have to go through a rigorous application and screening process. If you purchase a Silver Sable Shepherd this way, you can expect them to come with all applicable health care, including spay or neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping. Silver coloration in Shepherds is caused by genetic dilution. The silver color of this particular German Shepherd is the result of a recessive gene in the bloodline. Just because there might be a silver puppy in a litter does not mean that they all will share the trait. Silver Sable Shepherds are incredibly rare. You might have some real trouble locating a Silver Sable German Shepherd. When you do, you want to secure the puppy as quickly as possible—as there is high demand for them. Even if the brothers and sisters of the litter do not share the color, this can make the particular puppy cost more than the others. The ultimate cost is up to the breeder to ensure the quality of the animal. Silver Sable Shepherds are stubborn. Because the Silver Sable German Shepherd is so remarkably intelligent, they tend to have a stubborn streak. For inexperienced owners, their energy levels and intelligence can be intimidating, making training difficult. Silver Sable Shepherds are incredibly family-oriented. Like any other German Shepherd, the silver sables are intensely loyal to the members of its family. Silver Sable Shepherds are perfect for a wide variety of work-related tasks. Because of their sharpness, they do well and work-related tasks on police forces and other special duties. It truly is remarkable what these animals are capable of. Conclusion If a Silver Sable German Shepherd sounds like a perfect fit for your home life, you can start looking at breeders in your local area. If you have your heart set on this rare coloration of an excellent dog breed, we wish you the best of luck in your search. Featured Image Credit: J. Romanova, Shutterstock Contents. Saber is a certified therapy dog as well - he loves people and loves to visit. .Saber at Three Below doing therapy and some casual shots Starting to fill out! He has had reds and tans too! Good thing she never looks at my websight or she'd kill me lol: Michelle and saber winning it all st the fair news paper article Saber doing agility walked right on the equipment first time Sabers brother at only 8 months old. .Like this male Saber consistantly produces bigger and better then himself Sabers 2 year old brother and letter from owners Good Morning Robin, I figured since Max just turned 2 I'd update you. He was born on 17 Dec , to Blaze and Ziva. Had him at the vet's on Monday and he weighed in at pounds, so his weight has been pretty steady for the past few months, but he has grown taller. Currently he likes to rest his chin on the dining room table when he watches me on the laptop. Always ready in case there is an opportunity to be pet. Loves riding in the car, and gets along great with other dogs, but still apprehensive with new people, or with someone he hasn't seen in a while. I always bring treats with me to help with the introductions. Loves going with me to different businesses where allowed and has never been a problem. Great on hikes, and he carries his own backpack and supplies. The picture was taken this morning while he was waiting for his breakfast. As you can see, the silver is starting to really show. We get stopped all the time when we're out and about because of his looks, and I'm always asked if it's ok for them to take his picture because they've never seen another German Shepherd like him. I've had too many offers to sell him to count. The vet's office is really surprised at his disposition because he takes the poking and proding without incident considering his size. As always there are people worried about him because of his size, but they soon learn their fears are unfounded. Overall I'd have to say he's been a great dog. Saber sons from his first litter out of a very small female! Both at 10 months old are over lbs and 30 " high at the shoulder. The rare tri color sable male is lbs the black and silver at 10 months old. When we take them for walks they strut like the world is looking at them. I wanted to get another puppy before he passed away, so that our older dog could help raise the puppy. After a while, I found your website, and looked through it, repeatedly. I was impressed by what you detailed. Large GSDs, with calm temperaments, good health, and long lives. I then researched your reputation. I am a trained investigator, being suspicious is a career hazard. I could only find one, single complaint.I wasn't really looking for a "breed standard" GSD.I was looking for more. Another white shepherd, with a straight back and good hips. I called you, and discussed what I was looking for.A large white GSD, with a good protective drive, lower prey drive, and a mellow disposition. Well, it is a year later. And we have gotten far more that what I had hoped for. Physically, he is an amazing example of a German Shepherd. He is a solid pounds, with incredible muscle tone, and a massive head. He has yet to start filling out. I expect him to be at least pounds. In all honesty, I have been a bit startled by how quickly he grew, and how large he has become. My veterinarian, who has been practicing for 35 years, has remarked that she has never seen another dog like him. She is very impressed with his bone structure, his stance, and how proportional he is. His strong, straight back; his massive head, his size, and his strength are all things that she has noted. She has suggested that I breed him, because she believes that it would be a shame not to pass his genetics on.He is, quite simply. When we take him out in public, he creates quite a stir. People routinely approach us to compliment him, and how beautiful he is. He has been described as "gorgeous", "regal", and "majestic". The fact that our eight year old can control him in public only adds to people's fascination with him. He is very obedient, and was easy to train. He is very intelligent. He is affectionate, very loving, and very playful. Despite his size, he is quite gentle with those he loves. His protective drive is very appropriate. He is wary of strangers until properly introduced. He physically places himself between my children and other people. After being taught by our older shepherd, he now regularly patrols the perimeter of our property. I have included a few pictures. Unfortunately, it is hard to get good angles of him, because he thinks my taking pictures is some sort of game. The pictures truly do not do him any justice. We will be picking up another puppy from you. Quite frankly, I think that you have managed to produce amazing examples of what GSDs should be.Large and powerful; extremely intelligent, loyal and gentle; superior health and longevity, with a very appropriate protective drive. You have surpassed all of my expectations, and our family thanks you.Andrew Sadowski. Are they healthy dogs? Strong, rich colors are generally preferred in this working bred dog. This may be why silver grey dogs are less common. Washed out colors, including blues and livers, are considered a serious fault. The white coat color is undesirable within the official description, and even leads to disqualification from the show ring. Where Do They Come From? The black and silver German Shepherd is essentially the same as any other color of German Shepherd Dog. The history of the German Shepherd Dog, of course, can be traced back to Germany. Cavalry Officer Max von Stephanitz decided he wanted to breed the ideal herding dog. Von Stephanitz spent 35 years dedicating his life to improving the breed. Expanding from its pastoral herding roots to showing its utility as a service dog and in police and military canine units worldwide. The Genetics of the Silver German Shepherd Coat color genetics are complex, with the exact genes responsible for silver coloration yet to be fully identified. Within the German Shepherd breed, the gene for sable is dominant over all other colors and patterns. The first registered German Shepherd Dog was sable in color. While you may see a working silver sable Shepherd, that would be a very unusual color combination. Different colors Bear in mind as well that the final color of a puppy will only be clear once the outer coat has fully developed. This means that a relatively dark coated puppy could develop into a mature black and silver German Shepherd Dog. They are large dogs, weighing between 50 — 90 pounds and standing between 22 — 26 inches tall. And have a muscular, strong body, with pointed ears and a dense double coat. You may have seen parent dogs advertised as black saddle silver German Shepherds, but what does that actually mean? Any German Shepherd Dog with silver coloration is less likely to have a silverback German Shepherd pattern. Grooming The double coat of the German Shepherd does require brushing every few days to remove loose hairs. They will also shed twice a year, leaving a significant amount of hair behind! Color vs Temperament There is no link between the gene for silver fur and the typical temperament traits of the dog. German Shepherds have a reputation for being fiercely intelligent, intensely loyal, and enthusiastic about work or exercise. This is a brave and courageous breed, as well as being more aloof than some others. They are good around children they know, and often take on a guardian role for those within their own family. Training and Activity All German Shepherds are intelligent dogs, regardless of their coat patterns. Their high level of intelligence means they are a joy to train, and enjoy positive, reward-based training methods. These are active dogs, and require regular daily exercise. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for German Shepherds. Be sure to challenge yours with activities such as agility, or learning tricks, as a way to keep both their mind and body stimulated. Unfortunately, all German Shepherds can be prone to a range of health conditions. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are both common in the breed. Parent dogs should have been given a score for their hips and elbows. By selecting parent dogs with high scores, you can reduce the chances of your puppy developing these conditions. This is the result of abnormal cartilage growth. Other health conditions that can affect this breed include: Degenerative myelopathy.

Do every chore you need to do before your pug arrives. This way, your pug would have all the attention it needs as it settles down for the first time. Avoid doing the following things. Allow it to settle and be familiar with its new home first before doing so. Start to crate-train your pug. Crate training is essential for pugs for many reasons. For instance, it will help them learn much quicker and have toilet training at the same time. You can do this by putting your pug into its crate the first thing after it arrives at home. You can add a nice treat for your pug to eat in the crate. Begin the house training. As soon as your pug starts to settle, try to make some schedule for house training. It would be best if you do it at the same time of the day. This way, your pet will learn to abide by a specific routine. You can also do this with potty training, mealtimes, playtimes, and other activities. Thus, you may find it overwhelming to choose which one would be best. Research to find out more about your chosen Pug breeder. Though we offer you a list of Pug breeders, you still need to get to know your chosen one. You can contact the phone number and visit their website to learn more about what kind of breeder they are. If you can, it would be better to visit their address. This way, you can avoid going into business with unreputable breeders. Ask the right questions. Once you have your breeder, reach out to him or her and ask the right questions. Visit your future pup in its current home. If you have connected with a breeder, chances are it will give you weeks to prepare your home. In those weeks, the breeder will also prepare the puppy. Between those weeks, you should get invited to meet and bond with your future pup. When you do, try to see and check the environment and how your puppy reacts. Such things will tell you a lot about how the breeder has been treating the puppy. Your breeder should ask more about you. A good breeder wants the puppies to be under good parents in the future. Wool: also known as curly, slightly coarse feeling to the touch - an allergy friendly coat. Hair: also known as flat or slick coat, this is a shedding coat and is NOT allergy friendly. Grooming requirements of Australian Labradoodles: There are several factors to consider in grooming your Australian Labradoodle. One is: how long do you want to keep the coat, or what look are you going for? The "shaggy" look is most popular and they can be groomed just a couple times a year. If you keep your pet indoors most of the time you can get away with an occasional bath and brushing every few days. If you want the shorter look, which requires less brushing you will want to groom your pet every couple of months. The next thing to consider is coat type. A curly wool coat is not one you can keep "shaggy" but would tangle and mat if let grow long - they should be groomed every months, depending on care given. A fleece wavy coat will allow for the two different grooming options I spoke about and is the most desired Labradoodle coat. The other coat options we do not breed as they often produce shedders - that is why we breed multi-generation Australian Labradoodles, to produce the best coats and temperaments. Girls are more than boys, smaller is more than larger, red, chocolate, multicolor, caramel is more than black. A curly or loose curly coat is more than a wavy or straight coat. A fluffy face more than a retriever face. So the most expensive would be a curly small girl with a fluffy face and the least would be a bigger straighter, bigger boy who is black. If you decide to pass on a litter, you may, but the prices will be whatever they are at the time you choose a pup. Our pet price is listed by each puppy on the website at choosing time with most families receiving discounts which are available for special needs, police, firefighters and military families. A Labradoodle, Goldendoodle or Doubledoodle?? As we learned and improved, we brought the size down and made multigeneration labradoodles and goldendoodles in a variety of colors. Considering that the 2 breeds in a doodles makes them healthier than a pure bred hybrid vigor, a doubledoodle poodle, golden retriever and labrador retriever mixes the breeds a little more as they have three breeds instead of two breeds. Australian doodles began in Australia, by adding Cocker Spaniel into the bloodline creating a silkier, better proportioned doodle there is no Australian shepherd in them. We prefer every litter to be multigeneration Australian Doodles for the best look and best health. We don't match parents by whether they are a labradoodle, goldendoodle or doubledoodle but by their attributes. Some couples make pups with light eyes, or a deep red color. This will be an extraordinary time. Assess your allergies. We have NO way of knowing what puppy will work for you. Everyone is so individual. Your allergies are your responsibility. Please be wise, we love our pups and don't want you to have to rehome pup. No refunds If there is a slight chance pup won't work, please don't get a pup. They are not an object to try out and return. Email us at doodlesndanesofsandiego gmail. Keep in mind that the Wait list is typically a months wait to have the puppy in your home. Feel free to call cel or email as sometimes we keep a few back for possibilities for our breeding program or extra training. We'll watch pups grow with pics online until they are about weeks old when we choose. You may choose with videos and chatting with us or come in person on choosing day. When pup is weeks We often have tech or tech user issues, If you don't hear from us, please txt us at After puppies are born, we will post pics of pups on the web site as they grow. If the puppy you want is not available, you have the option to roll your deposit to another litter. You'll keep moving up the wait list. You can remain on the wait list as long as you'd like but the puppy price will be whatever it is at the time you choose a puppy. Puppy will be ready to go home at about 8 weeks. While you are waiting, watch as many Cesar Milan shows as possible. Read the tab titled "Before Bringing Puppy Home" on our web site. Order puppy vitamins through our website or at www. Add a few tablespoons water and a teaspoonful canned food to the dry. Can you afford the puppy? Pet insurance and a Puppy plan is recommended. Your vet can help you with which plans are best. Boy or a Girl? Typically, boys are more laid back, flexible with change and puppy-like longer. They are not as tidy and take a little longer to potty train. Girls are often quicker to potty train, cleaner and have more patience with all that human talk and training. They tend to be higher maintenance, less goofy and more inflexible with changes. Both make marvelous pets. Two same gender pups that you get as pups do well together otherwise we prefer opposite genders if you're adding a new pup to older dogs in your family. Human bonding and trust is key to a successful future relationship. With children and a lot of loving, we were helping pups be human bonded before we knew there was a military program for this. During day each puppy participates in this early stimulation program causing increased neurological stimulation, a stronger immune system and improved lifelong health. A lot of the time, cheaper dogs are not properly bred and will have health problems. Demand for Labradoodles has been growing for the last couple of decades without breeders producing more of these dogs. This means somewhat high prices. It is normal to have to pay extra for a breed that is in demand. Shipping Costs Are Expensive If you buy a Labradoodle from a breeder in a different state, they will fly it to you, which will cost hundreds of dollars. However, it should not be your first choice. Breeder Reputation If you want to save money and take risks, you can get your puppy from a breeder who is not well known. A Labradoodle should live for 12 years and should be a healthy dog. You are more likely to end up with a sickly dog if you try to save money this way. Breeders and Health Checks A breeder should take their dog to the vet and have a full physical exam to make sure the dog is healthy. Blood tests can find Brucellosis and heartworms. Antibiotics and other medications can treat these diseases. The dog will also get a fecal exam to check for things like worms, which could make the dog unable to have children. The dog needs a CERF Canine Eye Registration Foundation certification that proves it does not have cataracts or other eye diseases that can be inherited. Hip Checks A dog will also have its hips X-rayed multiple times. A dog with genetic hip problems should not breed. Genetic Tests While a breeder cannot perform every possible test, they can perform more than one of them. They can make reasonably sure that the litter of dogs will be healthy and long-lived. A breeder might use genetic tests to see if their dogs have genes for diseases common to their breed. Labradoodle Prices in the US Different states have different prices, and so do different breeders in each state. Differences between states are probably much less than differences between breeders. Some of these things never have to be replaced. Others, like toys, have to be replaced many times. What Do Food and Treats Cost? It depends on the size of your dog and the price of the food. Sometimes, food is reasonably cheap. You might spend much less than that each year on a small Labradoodle. The best way to feed your dog properly is with high-quality dog food. It is a highly nutritious brand that can help your puppy develop into a strong, healthy dog. NomNomNom is a meal delivery service for dogs. If you tell the company about your dog, their nutritionists will create ideal food for your dog. While NomNomNom is expensive, it may be worth it. Remember that the healthier your dog is, the less likely you will need to take it to the vet for an expensive treatment. It is made from decent ingredients and includes chelated minerals so that your dog can digest it easily. It is not quite as good as more expensive dog food, but it is still healthy. Taste of the Wild Dog Food Taste of the wild is one of the most popular premium dog food brands. It is made out of real roasted meat, not only beef but bison and venison. Taste of the Wild Dog Food also contains antioxidants from real fruits and vegetables and chelated minerals for easy digestion. Grooming Costs Professional groomers save time and do a great job, but they cost a lot. You can reduce the lifetime cost to a few hundred dollars in total if you groom the dog yourself. You will need a brush , nail clipper, and hair trimmer. Make sure to give your dog a treat when it obeys you. Veterinary Costs Sometimes, a medical procedure can cost thousands of dollars. If you take your dog in for regular checkups, you can treat health problems before they get worse. Surgery and Insurance A lot of the time, your Labradoodle will live its whole life without ever needing surgery. However, surgery can cost thousands of dollars. Coat Color and Price You can find Labradoodles in a wide variety of coat colors. If you want a rarer color, you may have to pay more. Certain multi-colored coats that many people want are more expensive. Labradoodle Colors Not all breeders charge more for Labradoodles of specific colors. There is no clear answer to how much a Labradoodle of each color costs. Usually, the rarer the color is, the more expensive. Blue Labradoodles Blue Labradoodles are a somewhat rare type of doodle. They are not truly blue. At first, Blue Labradoodles are black. Later on, they acquire a grey and somewhat blueish tone. They are not likely to have blue eyes, but a few do. Black Labradoodles Black Labradoodles are more common than Labradoodles of many other colors. The nose, paws, and eyes are all black. Red Labradoodles Red is the rarest of all colors for Labradoodles. A Red Labradoodle is difficult to breed. Sometimes, a cream-colored Labrador and a darker Poodle produce a Red Labradoodle. The combination of a red coat and a black nose makes these beautiful dogs. Breeders can easily find a darker poodle and a darker labrador. Tuxedo Labradoodles Tuxedo Labradoodles are fancy dogs that have part black and part white coats. The belly and legs are white, but the rest is black, giving the impression of a tuxedo. Cafe Labradoodles These coffee-colored or beige dogs get their color relatively late, after one to three years. They look very cute with their rose-colored noses. Chalk Labradoodles Chalk Labradoodles are even closer to white than cream Labradoodles. Their fur is an off-white color without much yellow coloring, and their nose is black. Caramel Labradoodles Caramel Labradoodles have a lot of yellow and some reddish fur. Unlike yellow or Red Labradoodles, they have brown noses. The dogs have a lot of brown fur and some large black patches. Parchment Labradoodles Parchment Labradoodles are the color of coffee with a lot of milk in it. They have pink noses, and as puppies, their fur is the color of milk chocolate. Silver Labradoodles Silver Labradoodles have a mix of charcoal and silver fur. There are often patches of one color inside another. Coat Color and Traits It is not a myth that dogs with different colors behave differently. Dogs of different colors behave somewhat differently and are vulnerable to different health problems. There is not yet much scientific evidence for this, but that does not mean it is a myth. For example, black labradors quite likely have a somewhat shorter life expectancy. Behavior and Health By Color While there is not yet much known about Labradoodle behavior by color, we know more about Labradors. You might expect a Labradoodle to act like a Labrador of the same color, but this might be only weakly true. Chocolate Labradors are energetic, somewhat hard to train, and somewhat short-lived. They are slightly rare. Despite their great energy, they are not usually used as service dogs. Yellow labs vary in color, from almost white to almost red. They might be the friendliest. Black labs are calm and affectionate. Hunters often use them. They are the most common color. Red labs are the darkest of yellow labs. They are similar to yellow labs in health and friendliness. White labs are usually healthy as long as they are particularly light-colored yellow labs instead of albinos. The fairly few white labs that are albinos often have serious health problems. Silver labs are chocolate labs that have a silvery color. They have the same health problems that chocolate labs do. Very cheap Labradoodles may have health problems if they were not bred responsibly. While food is a significant part of the cost, it is much less than half of it. Feed it a premium brand, this will keep your dog much healthier. Veterinary costs can be high. Prevention is cheaper than treatment, so give your dog all the vaccinations it needs on it. In its early history, the Italian Spinone was generally a healthy breed. However, indiscriminate breeding practices due to ignorance, lack of concern, and monetary gain changed the landscape dramatically. Our beloved breed has some issues that need to be addressed. These are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and thyroid conditions. A DNA testing is also appreciated. Any dog that has had a history of unexplained seizures or any other obvious hereditary medical conditions must never be bred. Remember that these are serious health conditions that will severely impact the quality and length of life of any affected puppies. Health screening of breeding stock cannot guarantee that your puppy will be excluded from any of these problems but the risk factor is mitigated substantially. It is important to insist on a minimum set of standards when acquiring a Spinone puppy. A good breeder should be able to demonstrate testing of these issues by either providing a link to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals records, CHIC records through AKC or they should be able to supply copies of the certified paperwork they received after the test screening was completed. If they do not, or are not willing to provide this information, search out a breeder that is willing to disclose this information. Your breeder should offer a minimum of 1-year written guarantee against genetic health conditions. No matter where you purchase a pup, please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to keep feeding it the same food that it has been eating at its previous home. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source Talk to the person or organization that you are adopting your puppy from to see what food they are feeding it. They should willingly provide that info and they may even send you home with some if you can't find any to buy. If you can't find the right food in your local pet supply store, consider ordering it online. However, you would need to order it ahead of time so that you have it on hand when the puppy comes home. If you want to feed your puppy a different food from what it has been eating, you will need to switch its food over the course of several days. Feed that mix for several days. Finally, you can give the puppy all new food. If you are content to give your puppy the food it was originally eating, it's fine to do that. Every puppy will have different nutritional needs. Because of this, it's a good idea to discuss proper nutrition with your vet. They can suggest great foods to give your puppy and how much it should be eating. Go to source The right portion size depends on the size of your puppy and its metabolism. Ask your vet to teach you how to body score your puppy. This will allow you to do a quick visual check to see whether your puppy is losing or gaining weight. Tip: If your vet suggests a specific food but doesn't tell you how much to give your puppy, follow the instructions on the packaging. Doing 3 or 4 feedings per day allows your puppy to get enough nutrients without overwhelming its digestive system with a huge amount of food at once. This is especially important when your puppy is under 6 months old, as they have delicate systems. Go to source Don't just leave the food out all day. Take the food away after the puppy eats for about 10 or 15 minutes. Lab puppies should always have access to fresh water so that they can stay adequately hydrated. Put out a dish of water and dump it out, clean the dish, and refill it daily. Some puppies are really messy with their water dishes. To prevent a mess, try putting the water dish on a tray, so that spilled water won't go right onto the floor. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Well-bred Labradors are relatively low maintenance, fit and healthy dogs. But your Labradors continuing health and well-being does depend entirely on you. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, grooming, preventive measures and regular visits to the vet are the real key to maintaining a high level of wellness and good health. All these actions are your responsibility and solely under your control. Daily routines will be diet control, exercise and physical inspections. Weekly routines will be grooming, ears, eyes, teeth and nail care. Quarterly routines could be shared between visits to the vet, a canine dentist and bathing. And the annual routine will be vaccinations. Just remember that prevention is always better than cure, so doing your best to prevent any illness and catching problems at the earliest possible stage is the goal to aim for. The following are all areas where you only need a little knowledge to effectively take care of your Labrador well. And if you cannot dedicate this time and effort, then in the nicest possible way, you might be better suited to a pet with less demanding care requirements such as goldfish. Making Safe Your Home and Garden Labradors are a lively and inquisitive breed, especially during their first three years so you need to keep dangerous household items out of their reach. Conceal electrical wiring…we all know of their infamous love for chewing. Sharp teeth and electricity do not mix! Keeping Nails Trim Most Labradors will need a nail trim every 2 to 3 months, although some may never need it. Regularly walking your dog on hard ground, especially sidewalks and roads, will have a natural filing effect and keep your dogs claws in order. This can make them sore and bleed. Ear Care What with a Labradors slightly drooping ears and their love of water, the inside of their ears can sometimes retain too much moisture, causing bacteria to build up and infections to form. I shall be writing an article on this very soon. Just some of the problems a Labrador may have with its teeth are gum disease, loose teeth, cracked or broken teeth, root abscesses and a build up of tartar. These can be very uncomfortable for your dog and can lead to further problems if neglected. Therefore, you need to inspect their teeth regularly, take measures to clean their teeth and even visit a professional canine dentist every 6 months or annually for a thorough check up and any necessary treatments. Treat their teeth like you would your own. Dealing with Parasites Controlling fleas, ticks and other parasites is essential for keeping your Labrador healthy. Immediate problems include extreme irritation and skin sores, but extreme infestations can lead to more dangerous problems including Lyme disease and tape worms. If you stick to a regular grooming schedule as you should! Simply brush your hand against the lie of your Labradors fur and watch for any small moving dots and check for any clearly visible ticks. There are many safe and effective over-the-counter flea control products , many of which contain formulations to prevent ticks at the same time. Finally, depending on where you live in the world, you may need to put your Labrador on medication for heartworm. Where mosquitoes are a problem, they can pass on heartworm and this can be fatal. Even the medicine for heartworm makes your dog very ill so prevention is definitely better than cure! Diseases such as distemper, rabies, hepatitis and parvoviros to name just a few. Your puppy will have had his first shots at five or six weeks before you got to take him home, and he will need a few further shots over a period of up to 18 weeks. A rabies shot usually follows at 6 months of age or so. After this, your adult Labrador will need just a single booster each year to stay protected. For many facts on vaccinations and the schedule you should follow when vaccinating your puppy, please click here. Dogs need a balance of vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins different to that of a human and feeding them on human leftovers can lead to malnutrition, as can a diet based on cheap filler packed dog food. You should perform a little research to find and use a recognized healthy brand of dog food that will cater to your Labradors needs. To help with this, please see our articles that list 4 of the best foods for Labrador puppies opens in new window or the best dog foods for adult Labradors opens in new window …yours really will thrive on these handpicked, quality foods! Additionally, the best thing you can do is set up a feeding schedule for your dog, twice per day being the recommended, and be mindful of any extra treats. Your Lab should always be well fed but not over-fed. I shall discuss this more in a later article. An Important Note On Drastic Changes In Eating And Drinking Habits If your dog is off their food, drinks way too much or way too little for a period of time more than 36 hours, you should call your vet as this is almost surely a sign of an underlying problem. They are voracious eaters and will eat just because they can, not because they need it. Excess weight can lead to all sorts of issues including arthritis and heart problems. To prevent this, control their diet and give them plenty of exercise for them to burn off those calories. They really do need very little exercise of just a few short minutes a couple of times per day. Too much exercise for a puppy can cause skeletal formation issues and plays a large part in joint problems. Take it easy until your puppy is at least a year old. Bedding and Shelter A Labrador should always have a soft surface to lay upon. To prevent this you should get your Lab a large sized dog bed or line a crate to offer a soft and comfortable place to rest. If your Lab spends any amount of time outside, you must provide shelter to offer an escape from the sun in summer, and preferably the shelter should have a raised floor so the wet and cold is kept away in winter. If your Lab puppy gets used to sleeping in a bed of yours or your children, it will be a hard habit to break and will more than likely end in separation anxiety and night-time whining. You want your Labrador to be comfortable alone for periods of time and should start forming this habit ASAP. Training The importance of training your Labrador cannot be overstated. A dog is a dog and not a human. You need to teach your dog how to behave and what your instructions are asking them to do. Before a puppy can become a trusted, well-behaved dog they have a lot of learning to do…and you a lot of teaching! To learn from the written word, I am part way through building the ultimate resource in the form of this site. Routines for feeding, exercise, grooming and visits to the vet are all easily managed with a little knowledge and by planning a schedule in advance and sticking to it. Spending quality time with your Lab is also key, especially regular grooming sessions. You should also attempt to learn your dogs normal living habits, how much he eats, drinks and sleeps. However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. They come to understand this as a desirable behavior. Preventing your puppy from going to the toilet within the home. So, why is using a crate to train your puppy to go outside so effective? Initially, this should be every hour or so. As labs grow older, you can reduce the frequency as they learn to hold and release independently. Step 2: House Training a Lab Puppy Housetraining or potty-training small labs can be, well, frustrating. As a pet owner, there are simple ways to train your puppy to understand ideal behavior quickly. Instead, they simply forget that they should control it. This helps avoid any issues early on. Keep small labrador puppies off the carpet. How to Feed Your Dog for Optimal Growth Feeding your labrador puppy a balanced diet could be an entire guide all on its own. It can feel overwhelming because you do have many options when it comes to feeding your dog. For example, if you work from home, it would be easy to feed your dog homemade dog food. Similarly, you might work a and yet want to reap the health-related benefits of a raw diet. Make sure to speak to your vet first. You do have choices for what to feed your puppy and you can mix and match these. Popular feeding options for any animal include kibble, wet food, raw food, and home-cooked food. Remember, a puppy is still growing, and they need a complete profile of nutrients and minerals to support their development. There are many commercial brands of dry food or kibble to choose from and you can adjust what you buy based on the ingredients. Do your research and find a brand you trust, with as much bioavailable nutritional content as is helpful. These can harm your puppy. In order to maintain good health and prevent simple ailments, your puppy can also benefit from taking a supplement. Some families choose to mix scraps or raw food with kibble to provide moisture and decrease the amount of food versus the calories consumed. Any veterinarian will tell you that a hard and fast rule is not necessarily the type of food but the amount. Obesity is a condition that can lead to many health issues for this breed. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. However, early dog training can eliminate common problems with puppy temperament and help make sure that your fur friend is always as friendly and happy as possible through the years. Puppy socialization simply means making your puppy open to and familiar with new experiences. You want to provide stimulation and encounters with experiences that they will probably face as adults. The window of opportunity to make sure your puppy is always a happy and friendly pooch closes around 14 weeks. Pre-Vaccination Lab Puppy Socialization Any veterinarian will tell you that a puppy is all done with their vaccinations after 12 weeks of age. The main point is to keep your puppy away from other dogs who may not yet be vaccinated or the excrement and markings of other animals that could carry data diseases. You can head to an off-leash dog park to allow them to explore and meet other fur friends. You can also take them beyond your backyard to the countryside to enable them to swim or set up obstacle courses and play with them. Another thing that people forget about is spaying or neutering their dogs. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with behavioral issues and can also reduce the onset of certain health conditions. At the same time, spaying or neutering a puppy too early may also lead to health issues. For many people, this is a worthwhile and even enjoyable trade-off. A happy, sociable dog is always the result of consistent training. Training your dog is a significant aspect of their early years. The different stages include: Get it — Using positive reinforcement, trainers will help your dog carry out actions without commands. Teach it — This stage harnesses the progress you made in the previous stages. Your dog now knows the word and the action that goes with it. Proof it — Proofing is where many people get stuck. Your dog will learn to listen and obey commands at this stage even when they are engaged in other things. Maintain it — Consistently using the techniques you learned to keep your dog following the same desirable behavior. All breeds of dogs respond best when you train them. Every labrador retriever relies on their human taking control and showing them how to respond in any situation. You can be sure that if you follow these tips that you will be taking proper care of your new puppy and will be able to make sure that your puppy will live a long and healthy life. Share on. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. AKC has a program called alternative registration and is not to be confused with Purebred Alternative Listing. I know this program works because I used it for my Great Pyrenees. I called AKC and they walked me through the steps. My Pyr is a very healthy, intelligent, and beautiful dog. The reason his sire and Dam were not registered was that the breeder wanted a quick buck. Anyways after AKC did the research they found he had a titled lineage. I know that I will catch some slack for going through a pet store but I have my reasons for doing so. I feel that getting a pet from a store is much like getting a pet from a shelter because what happens to the PUP if no one buys it. Either way, I went off subject. AKC will register your dog if it has a valid lineage. Oh and AKC has a Pedigree look-up so you can do the research yourself before you call them. Answer by jess It is not true. The only way to get papers is if both parents of the pup are registered and the breeder registered the litter the puppy is in. Know better? Give your own answer to this question!

Queen Victoria developed a passion for Pugs which she passed on to other members of the Royal family. Pugs are loyal, loving and affectionate with their families. They are playful and lively and sure to keep you laughing. Pugs are known for being very sociable and are gentle companion dogs. Pugs get along well with other dogs and pets, and they behave impeccably with both children and visitors. With few exceptions pugs are play well with and enjoy children and are sturdy enough to cope with them. Pugs are often described as multum in parvo, or "much in little", due to their small size but big personality. They are rarely aggressive but strong willed. Pugs can be quite and docile or vivacious depending on what sort of mood their owner is in. They are very sensitive to the tone of the owners voice and are a very intelligent and trainable dog. They do require regular and consistent training. Healthy pugs can compete in sports such as Agility, Flyball and Obedience. Pugs are in the toy class of dogs and have a wrinkly, short-muzzled face and curled tail. They have a fine, glossy coat - in silver, apricot, faun, or black. They have two very distinct ear shapes - "rose" and "button". The preference for breeding is the "button" style. Pugs' legs are strong, straight, of moderate length, and are set well under. Their ankles are strong, their feet are small, their toes are well split-up, and their nails are black. The muzzle is relatively short, blunt, not upfaced. The nose is fairly large with well open nostrils. Eyes or nose should never be adversely affected by over nose wrinkle. Pinched nostrils and heavy over nose wrinkle is unacceptable. The mouth is slightly undershot and the wide lower jaw with incisors almost in a straight line. Wry mouth, teeth or tongue showing - are all highly undesirable. The average lifespan is years. Pugs are very special and require extra attention and care. Nose roll - must be kept clean and dry with a twice weekly wipe and dried with a tissue. Eyes - Pugs eyes are large and prominent and prone to injury. Particularly, care must be taken around rose bushes, grasses and branches on walks, sand, dust, cats etc. Any injury, inflammation, squinting, winking or closed eyes must be checked by the vet. Hot Weather Alert - Pugs may be prone to breathing difficulties - particularly in hot weather. They are often unable to efficiently regulate their temperature through evaporation from the tongue by panting so awareness of this is important and due care taken. Pugs must not be left outside in extreme heat. Indoors with airconditioning is a must. It is a sad fact that Pugs do not cope with sustained heat. Winchester - Winchester Repeating Arms Manufacturing - it's how the West was won, with their lever action rifles! Bonus Lab Name! Endal - The most decorated dog in the world, Endal was a yellow Labrador retriever. Make sure that the name works for your dog, lifestyle and family too. It should be short, one or two syllables at most. And it should have longer vowels and harsher consonant sounds, to help with communication and training your new baby yellow Lab. What would you name these cute yellow Lab puppies? But consider this: the Labrador retriever is the number one most popular dogs in the US and has been for the past 26 years and counting—wow! What this means is that you are likely to run into plenty of other Labs and their owners at the dog park, beach, hiking trails, and even your local fire hydrant. Yellow Lab Naming Tips Here are a few helpful hints to guide you towards picking the right name for your yellow lab. First, you may want to try to stay away from any name that sounds too much like the name of a fellow family member or friend. Also, in some cases, choosing a shorter name three syllables or less can be easier to say and also easier for your lab to hear. Finally, you may want to think twice before picking a racy or confrontational name that could be taken the wrong way by others. Both are great options, but of course, the choice is all yours! You can find more name suggestions based on popular dog names here. While there are no specific, set-in-stone rules, some of this advice might help you narrow down your choices and settle on the right name for your pup. Rather than understanding specific words and phrases, dogs learn to associate sounds with things. This means they will learn to associate the sound of their name with them! You can make this easier on your dog by keeping their name short—no more than one or two syllables. This will make it easier for them to recognize their name and distinguish it from all the rest of the background noise in life. Consider Using Nicknames If you want to give your dog a longer, quirkier name, consider how you are going to abbreviate it. It is best to consider this from the beginning. They will also need to learn important commands such as sit, stay, leave it, and fetch. So, when choosing a name, try to avoid names that sound too much like these important commands so that your dog never gets confused. Dogs find it easier to distinguish sibilant or blend consonants, such as S or SH, or something hard and commanding like K or C. For example, names like Carl, Simon, or Shelly are all good choices, as they start with consonants that are easy to differentiate from background noise. While it might seem funny at the time, you may come to regret it later. Now, imagine your kid, or a young dog walker, having to do the same. The process of teaching a dog their name is the same as teaching them other commands. However, you are teaching them that the response that you want from their name is their attention rather than a specific gesture or action. Use the same process of positive reinforcement to teach them to stop what they are doing and look at you when you say their name. Avoid using any kind of punishment when training your dog, especially when you are teaching them to recognize their name. This can result in negative associations, and that is the last thing you want them to have when it comes to their own name. Start with short micro training sessions daily just 5 to 10 minutes or so during which you have your dog in an attentive situation, and then say their name. When they respond to you, give them a treat. Take them out on the leash even if it is only into the backyard , and let them explore. Then, while walking your dog, call their name. When they do turn towards you, you can say their name again and then reward them for their response. With this kind of reward-based training, your dog will quickly learn to associate their name with good things, and they will always want to give you their attention. While it can be confusing for dogs to have their name changed, there is nothing wrong with renaming a dog when you bring them home. While older dogs will take longer to grow accustomed to the change, a new name can actually help them bond with you, especially if they came from an unhappy living situation. Can you give dogs human names? Some trainers recommend not giving dogs human names. This is because it contributes to our tendency to anthropomorphize dogs. However, this is more a problem with owner attitudes than dog names, and there is no reason not to give your dog a human name as long as you raise them with the right outlook. The Verdict Choosing the perfect name for your dog is a big responsibility, and it can be hard to settle on one that suits your dog just right. Hopefully, you have found some inspiration on this list. While there are no particular rules for choosing a name, there are some principles of good practice to follow. Crixus is the best dog I have ever had. I can't believe how smart he is. Sadly, she passed away shortly after this photo was taken at the age of 8 years. He is a 3-year-old male German Shepherd. The dog on the right is Elsa. She is also a purebred German Shepherd, but due to her coat type her ears were too heavy and just would not stay up. They love to have their picture taken. To make a long story short, the end result was that he had a very large nearly cantalope size splenic tumor which ruptured ultimatley causing his untimely passing. He was playing and being his usual self at 8 in the morning and not even 12 hours later, he took his last breath. This came from our vet. As soon as Ace began to mope around we called our vet right away. They told us to bring him in right then, which we did and they got right down to business. He weighed his usual 90 pounds and had no hight temperature, but was breathing hard and would not move. Our vet examined him and said he was in a very grave state. His gums and tongue were fading in color so much so that she called the emergency vet and alerted them to our impending arrival. We took him there and they too, were on the ball. They did an ultrasound and it confirmed our vet's suspicions. He passed away before the ultrasound was even complete. These tumors grow very rapidly and 9 times out of 10 they are cancerous. We never had the first clue. Our hearts are broken, and we miss him terribly, but if this at least helps raise awareness, then our Ace's loss was not all in vain. We believe that even the most simple things can be made to be enjoyable and unforgettable. German Shepherds are great family dogs or dogs for a couple like us. After a few years of training with Sequoia, we found the most valuable lessons from our in-person and online dog trainer Zack Kiser from American Dog Pros. Put a life jacket on your German Shepherd for their first few times swimming to help build their confidence. German Shepherds are prone to eye conditions like Pannus which can be negatively impacted by UV sun rays. Dog sunglasses and dog goggles like Rex Specs are helpful tools to combat the UV. We also love using Rex Specs dog sunglasses when hiking in the snow to avoid the bright white glare in her eyes. Another bonus is that you have extra peace of mind when your dog is playing fetch with sticks or running through bushes and brush.
