Written by Simon Wilson in Beagle Mixes Last Updated June 22, Beagle golden retriever mix is a cross between two of the most popular breeds globally — the beagle and the golden retriever. This mix is adorable and full of energy like their parent breeds, making them great for families with young kids and other pets. They are also very intelligent, which makes training them a breeze. History of the Beagle Golden Retriever Mix The beagle golden retriever mix is a fairly new crossbreed, only becoming popular in the last few years. However, we can look at the history of their parent breeds to better understand where they come from. The Beagle The beagle is a scent hound originally developed in England to hunt rabbits. They were bred to have a strong sense of smell and be tenacious in their pursuit of prey. Over time, the breed became popular in other countries and used for different purposes. In the United States, they are commonly used as hunting dogs, while in Europe, they are more often kept as pets. Recently, breeders found the beagle is an excellent parent breed. Bonnie — our Lemon Beagle right after Crufts The Golden Retriever The golden retriever is a much newer breed, having only been developed in the late 19th century. They were originally bred in Scotland as gun dogs and were used to retrieve games that had been shot. Nowadays, golden retrievers are among the most popular breeds globally the third most popular breed and are kept as both working dogs and pets. Golden Retriever dog enjoying outdoors Beago — The Beagle Golden Retriever Mix Beago is a cross between the two breeds, the beagle and the golden retriever. As such, they inherit the best traits of both parent breeds. This Golden Retriever-Beagle mix is a medium-sized dog typically weighing between 30 and 50 pounds. They have a short to medium-length coat that can be either straight or wavy. The most common coat colors are brown, black, and white, but they can also be found in other colors like red and blue. They are very affectionate and love to cuddle. This Golden Retriever-Beagle mix is also very playful, energetic, and lively. They need plenty of exercise and love to play fetch or go for hikes with their human family. Beago is an intelligent breed that is easy to train. They are quick learners and respond well to positive reinforcement training methods like treats or verbal praise. The Golden Retriever-Beagle mix has long, floppy ears and a tail usually carried high. They have a broad head with a square muzzle. Their eyes are typically brown or hazel. The most common coat colors are brown, red Golden Retriever coat , black, and white, but they can also be found in other colors like red and blue. Their coat only needs to be brushed once or twice a week to remove any dirt or loose hair. They should also be bathed as needed, but not too often as it can strip their coat of natural oils. Beagos only need their nails trimmed every few weeks. Beago Exercise Needs Beagos are very active dogs that need plenty of exercise. They love to play fetch and go for hikes or runs with their family. The Golden Retriever-Beagle mix should be taken on a daily walk or given access to a dog park or a fenced-in yard where they can run and play. However, like all breeds, they are susceptible to certain health conditions. These include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and allergies. Beagos have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Beago Training Beagos are an intelligent breed that is easy to train. Beagos should be started on basic obedience training as early as possible. Beago Nutrition Beagos should be fed a high-quality diet appropriate for their age, activity level, and size. Puppies and young dogs will need more calories than adults. Beago Puppies Beago puppies are adorable and make great family pets. A beago puppy inherits the best traits of the beagle puppy and the golden retriever puppy. A beago puppy is a friendly, outgoing, and loving dog that loves to play. They need plenty of exercises and do best in a home with a backyard. Beagos are intelligent and easy to train. With proper care, they can live a long and healthy life. They are friendly, outgoing, and affectionate dogs that love to play. While the Beago is an outgoing dog that loves people, it may not be the best fit for every family. Families with small children or other animals should consider another mixed breed as the Beago may be too energetic for them. Families who are not active or do not have a yard for the great dog to run around in should also consider another popular breed. Final Thoughts on Beagle Golden Retriever Mix The Beago is an excellent breed for active families and has a yard for the great dog to run and play in. They are friendly, outgoing, and easy to train. Just get your Golden Retriever-Beagle mix from a reputable breeder. We hope you have enjoyed reading about the Beagle Golden Retriever Mix. Do you have a Beago? Tell us about your experience in the comments below! I've been living with and owning beagles for over 15 years now, and during that time I've learned a lot about myself and the beagles. I love to write about my beagle experiences, and I hope that by sharing my experiences, others may find use in my learnings and experiences. Read more about My Beagle Buddy. Simon Wilson Linkedin profile. These sweet-natured dogs are always patient with children and are tolerant towards their family as well as strangers. The Beagos are calm and docile dogs with an eagerness to please. They are neither hostile towards other pets nor are they timid or nervous. They make great family dogs that hate spending hours alone. Being light-hearted and lively, these dogs love working with people. They remain focused on their task until they become tired. They may also show some of the retrieving behavior of their Golden Retriever parents, such as fetching the newspaper, or waking up their family members. When intruders come around, they will bark to alert their owners. Care Exercise The beagle retriever mix is an active breed of dog that needs an hour of vigorous exercises regularly. It loves outdoor activities, which means it would be more than happy to go for a walk or a jog. Playing sessions involving a game of fetch in the backyard is also needed to keep your pet mellow and mentally satiated. You should provide your Beago with plenty of soft toys so that it can keep itself busy inside the house. Remember, a Beago is happiest when it has something to play with. Grooming Caring for this dog requires nothing extraordinary. Regular brushing is needed to remove the loose hairs from its coat, keeping them from settling all over the house. An occasional bath is necessary to keep it looking clean and smelling good. Its long, fold-over ears need to be frequently cleaned to prevent ear infections. To clean its outer ear, apply a pH-balanced ear cleaner using a cotton ball. Trimming its nails once a month as well as brushing its teeth times a week will help in keeping your pet in good condition. Health Problems Like most crossbred dogs, the beagle retriever mix is prone to some of the breed-specific health issues affecting its parents. Therefore, you should be aware of dog ailments such as hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, cancer, and heart diseases. Training These are highly trainable pets with the ability to learn quickly. The golden retriever and beagle mix dogs need exposure to new people as well as other pets when they are young. This will help them become a sociable and well-rounded pet. You can enroll your Beago puppy in obedience classes that will help your pet learn some of the rules of living in a family. Feeding When it comes to feeding your Beago, you may consider giving it commercial dry food garnished with a little bit of canned food, cottage cheese, or meat to add flavor. You may also give a healthy raw-food diet or a home-cooked diet, but make sure that the nutritional balance is correct. The daily amount of dry food required by an adult Beago is 1. Beago Retriever Description The Beago is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Beagle and the Golden Retriever. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He is three years old in this picture. His mom was a Golden Retriever and his dad was a Beagle. He looks mostly like a pound Golden Retriever with silky ears, feathers on his legs and a full flag of a tail. I think he has the best of both breeds—Golden Retriever happy, but the Beagle makes him less hyper than some Goldens. He's not much of a barker or howler either. He is all-around friendly, mellow, and very, very good with all kids. Jerri is not a watchdog at all—he thinks the only reason anyone would come to his house is to play with him or bring him treats. Not the smartest dog we ever owned but certainly the most loving and easygoing. He has nice long legs and big feet. He is real mellow and has a really, really playful side, too. We are having so much fun with him. His tail is long and turning black and when he barks he sounds loud, but no baying yet. He likes to chew and play and dig. He follows his nose all around like the hound that he is. His feet are webbed and thick and he likes to bounce up into the air. He is learning a lot; he sits and stays a little and gets down. We call him a Golden Reagle. Both parent breeds are renowned for their loyalty and intelligence, though both are also susceptible to a myriad of health concerns, which are less common in their Beago offspring. These dogs display many of the best traits of both parent breeds, making them excellent pets and hunters that are sure to continue growing in popularity. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Those that are intended for showing or hunting could cost substantially more. Adopting a dog from a shelter can save you a substantial amount of money while giving a lucky pup a second chance at a great life. See what their reputation is like and read any testimonials or reviews you can find. When you go to look at the puppies, look around the facilities and see what kind of conditions the puppies are kept in. This makes them incredibly easy to get along with. Naturally, with both sets of genes, Beagos can be expected to turn out equally friendly. These dogs tend to be quite affectionate and will take love from just about everyone. If you leave your Beago alone too much, it could become destructive out of boredom and anxiety. Are These Dogs Good for Families? With hunting deep in their genes, it can be hard for a Beago to turn off its prey drive. As such, smaller animals like cats and even small dogs can often set a Beago off, resulting in a chase. Naturally, this can be quite dangerous for other little critters. Granted, if you properly socialize your Beago often from an early age, you might be able to avoid such behaviors, but a strong prey drive is inherent in this breed. They have tons of energy thanks to their hunter parents. Both Golden Retrievers and Beagles are known for their outstanding endurance, and the Beago inherits this trait from them. All that energy is going to need an outlet, so you should expect to spend a good minutes exercising your Beago every day. If you skip this, your Beago could get bored and start displaying destructive behaviors that can be difficult to untrain. Luckily, their Beago offspring also display this affinity for training. Beagles have very short coats that need little upkeep while Golden Retrievers have much longer coats that require a bit more maintenance. If your dog takes after the Beagle side more, then it will probably only need its coat brushed once per week. For Beagos that have more of a Golden Retriever coat, brushing up to three times each week might be necessary. Keep them clean and make sure to always inspect for buildup, redness, mites, and any other signs of poor ear health. Minor Conditions.
Rescue Me! Grooming Your Mastiff Mixed With Boxer Boxer Mastiffs are easy to groom overall but generally shed in large amounts, which is why you should schedule days that you thoroughly brush their fur. Daily brushing is essential even for your short hair because it eliminates and lessens dirt accumulation as well as hair accumulation in the house. Ear and teeth hygiene should be an everyday priority to avoid dirt and bacterial accumulation in the ears and cavities or tartar, which could lead to infections in the future. Some of the conditions to take note of are: Hip Dysplasia: This is a genetic disease wherein there is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, which causes immense pain for the dog. If left untreated may cause crippling and painful arthritis of the joints. Due to excessive gastric content, the stomach of the dog becomes overstretched. It may cause severe pain when moving. Ectropion: This condition is more common in Mastiffs. The lower eyelids appear droopy due to an abnormality and may result in conjunctivitis or keratitis. Make sure you make arrangements with members of the family to ensure an adequately measured amount of food for your puppy. Choose gifts that have low calories instead, so that obesity is avoidable. The best choice of food would be those that are rich in protein for proper muscle building and repairing. Protein can be obtained through dog food alone, or you could ask your local vet for additional snacks and supplements. You can find protein in meat such as chicken, lamb, fish, and beef. Meat meals are concentrated forms sans the moisture but offer the same amount of protein as well. Fats are essential for eye and brain development because of the rich sources of Omega-3 Fatty acids. Chicken meat and fish oil are excellent sources. Avoid giving your Boxmas foods rich in common allergens such as corn, soy, dairy, wheat, and potatoes. Also refrain from giving any food coloring, as these may compromise the immune system. Never give them table food because it might cause different allergic reactions ranging from skin allergies to difficulty in breathing. To give your Boxer crossed with Mastiff better nutrition, check the following high quality and nutrient-packed dog food available on the market: Fromm Large Breed Puppy Gold Formula: This is a brand that ensures there are no allergens or irritants included. Specially formulated for puppies who are known to grow over fifty pounds, protein and fat levels are moderately incorporated. DHA-rich salmon oil is a bonus for brain and eye development. There are additional vitamins and antioxidants as well as a grain-free formula. Protein and fat levels are lower compared to different brands in the market but still packed with needed nutrients and vitamins to ensure proper growth and development. Royal Canin Boxer Adult Dry Food: This product boasts of high-quality proteins and nutrients, as well as the incorporation of L-carnitine. This combination helps your Mastiff mixed with Boxer maintain its overall built, burn fat efficiently, and avoid obesity. Orijen Puppy Large: The ingredients are fresh and high in protein. It consists of chicken and turkey, as well as fish. Your dog may be big or small, but you need to keep it happy and healthy all the time. Never give them the worst dry dog food that is low in nutrients and filled with by-products, and opt for best dry dog food instead. For the littlest of munchkins, check out our list of best puppy food brands , and for gray-coated, wise grandpa-doggos, opt only for the best senior dry dog food. Your stunning mixed heartthrob carries the genes of their super-gorgeous and incredibly different parents. But that means that you are in luck as you can offer your little charmer both the best dry dog food for small dogs and the best large breed dry dog food. Let them have a final say in which kibble they nibble. In line with the diet, also schedule a daily exercise regimen for your Boxmas. They are highly energetic and exuberant by nature, which means they require at least an hour of intense activities and exercises. This program includes running, walking, playing fetch, obedience exercises, and jogging. Never contain your Boxer crossed with Mastiff in a small space such as apartments or condos. Fulfill their need to stay fit by choosing a home that has adequate running space if you plan to adopt a Boxmas. Another option is to take trips to the park or jog around the neighborhood. If left idle for too long, they can be agitated or easily distracted and tend to destroy or chew on things out of frustration. Here are some toys to help exercise your Boxmas: OxGord BazooK-9 Tennis Ball Launcher Gun: Since your hybrid is energetic and loves running, this tennis ball launcher is a perfect toy when visiting parks or playing in the backyard. Invest in this versatile product so that it also saves you energy from having to throw the ball. It prevents the potential risk for periodontal disease. KONG Wubba Dog Toy: Made of nylon and has two balls inside one chewable and one squeaky , the Wubba dog toy will be a Boxmas favorite because of its durability and appearance. There is no need to continually throw away and replace toys when you purchase this product. Your hybrid will engage in chewing and decrease any risks of periodontal diseases as well. It can be a challenge for most owners because of the intelligence plus energetic combo, but with patience and determination, your hybrid will follow proper orders in no time. Boxers are easy to lead and train. This trait will save you a lot of time and effort. Make sure to familiarize yourself and your pup with play biting and attacking an intruder or stranger. If you can, plan for the whole week instead. It can be a challenge to keep their attention focused on the training, but with perseverance and patience, everything will eventually pay off. Encourage positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement will always be one of the best and most endorsed strategies to train a dog because it taps into the mental aspect. Your hybrid will automatically think that the specific actions you want your dog to do will earn a treat. Apply this in all tricks and strategies you wish to impart. Another thing to remember is always to have a big space for them to move around when around children to avoid any unwanted accidents. Your hybrid is a large dog and might be prone to crashes if confined in a small space. You can renovate your backyard and put obstacles or toys, or you may visit the park and play with other dogs. But in general, Boxer Mastiffs are very loyal, fun, active, and protective. The temperament from both parent breeds ensures that there is no aggressiveness or violence along with, of course, proper training. Older members of the family can pitch in and help training the big fellow, and this also allows more exposure to different people. This plan will avoid the unwanted one-owner type of dog in the future, as well as agitation and idleness. As an owner, it is your responsibility to ensure a healthy diet, proper living space, frequent trips to the vet, and specific training to help your hybrid live the best years of its life. Should a Boxer Mix take after their Boxer parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and friendly dog that loves their family and loves being active with them. Boxers are known for their energetic and exuberant personalities. They bond closely with their families, tend to have a cheerful disposition, and also tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are friendly dogs, they do have the instinct to protect their families. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar temperament in a Boxer Mix. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix is a good start. You can also meet the mother dog to get a feel for her temperament and to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should be socializing puppies while they have them, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Boxers are moderately adaptable dogs. Because of their energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. But, they can adapt to apartments as long as they get exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Although all dogs are sensitive to heat, the Boxer is even more so because of their short snout. And, because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that could affect the adaptability of a Boxer Mix, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Knowing more about the other parent breed will help you get a better idea of what range of potential characteristics to expect. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A Boxer Mix can inherit any combination of the potential health issues common to one or both of their parent breeds. Or, they could inherit none of them. From the Boxer side, potential health conditions include degenerative myelopathy, thyroid deficiency, hip dysplasia, and heart conditions. Boxers also tend to have sensitive digestive systems, which often makes them gassy. As a brachycephalic dog, they will also snort and snore. Because they are a barrel-chested breed, they are also at a higher risk for bloat in dogs. This can become dangerous, especially if the stomach flips, so you want to make sure you reduce the risk when you can and know the symptoms so you can get help as soon as possible. Since reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies, they should be able to answer your questions. Despite their high energy, Boxers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are intelligent, they pick up on things quickly and can get bored easily. But, they are eager to please their owners and tend to respond well to training. The other parent breed could make a Boxer Mix even easier to train or more difficult to train. You want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what range of trainability to expect. A Boxer Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both of them. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Ears should be dry, clean, and free of debris or pests. Unfortunately, many dog owners overlook dental care, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed. Daily walks plus playtime and other activities should be enough for this dog. However, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Boxer Mix to also be a high-energy dog. However, this is a potential range, so you will still need to be prepared to deal with a Boxer Mix that is high-energy. A Boxer usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so you do want to ask about them. A Boxer generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you can likely expect a similar life span in a Boxer Mix. Featured Boxer Mix Article. Be extra cautious with online transactions! Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Nadelhaus breeds German Shepherds puppies year round and while the majority of puppies we sell are short hair, we do have occasionally have long haired puppies. We breed all our German Shepherds in the black and red color. If you are looking for a long haired adult German Shepherd, we can also import long-haired German Shepherds direct from Europe. Contact us for more information. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Not every dog that is available for adoption will be featured on our website. Consequently, I have probably read the Golden Retriever standard hundreds of times and yet, every time I read it, I discover something new that somebody, somehow, snuck into the standard without me noticing. Usually, I find the hitherto unnoticed word in the middle of the standard. However, this time I found it in the very first sentence of the standard, right before I was getting ready to judge a very large entry of Goldens. The night before my assignment, I just happened to turn on HBO in the hotel room and a really cute movie starring Golden Retrievers had just commenced. It featured a litter of darling Golden Retriever puppies who were surprisingly coordinated for their approximate four-month-old age range. The next day, as I was reading the standard before my assignment, I realized what it was that had bothered me the night before. In fact, the puppies were more athletic than their parents. The parents looked like they had too much bone, too much coat, too much length of body, and too little agility. In their defense, they were highly trained and were supposed to demonstrate emotional, humanistic traits for the movie, not hunting dog traits. The above revelation made me start watching other Sporting breeds as they ran and played—a luxury afforded me by virtue of owning a boarding kennel. Obviously, different Sporting breeds move and hunt differently. The Golden is slightly longer than tall as measured from breastbone to point of buttocks , i. Apparently, a lot of exhibitors felt the same way. Rolling or dipping toplines, ewe necks, and shoulders set too far forward start to become the norm, all because of the quest for ultimate TRAD. However, Goldens were bred for stamina and endurance, and navigating rough terrain of the Scottish highlands—not for racing and sprinting across flat fields. So, even though it is not specifically stated in the standard, the Golden is a Retriever with a leg-to-height ratio—the distance from the elbow to the ground should equal the distance from the elbow to the withers. And the proper gait for a Golden in the show ring is a working trot at a moderate speed on a loose lead. For those of you who are confused about the many styles of Golden Retrievers, the Conformation Judges Training Video has several examples of the different styles. This phrase has been in our standard since recognition of the breed. Letter to Judges regarding correct coat and grooming practice 3. Size Disqualification in Golden Retrievers 4. Rescuing a German shepherd is very rewarding. However, they are also very sensitive to change and may be stressed or traumatized by their recent experiences. Since they are so devoted to their people, it may take them some time to adjust to a new family after losing the only home they once knew. However, once settled into their new home, they will develop beautiful bonds with their new family. German shepherds need time to transition from the shelter to their new forever home. But once they do, they will soon get into the groove of a new routine as they get to know and trust their new family. Transitioning a German Shepherd into Your Home One of the most important things to know is that there will be a transition period. The dog you take home will need help to become a comfortable, happy, trusting dog again. This transition time is a period of decompression. Dogs leaving the shelter need time to decompress from the stress. Some may have even been neglected or abused and need extra time to recover. By providing a safe, quiet home, and a regular routine, you can help the dog transition. This transition time can take two weeks or longer, depending on the dog. Understanding that dogs need this time to adjust, helps new owners set their expectations. How to Prepare for your Rescue Preparing your home ahead of time will allow you more time to spend with the dog and also make it easier to establish a routine from the get go. Dog proof your home as you would for a new puppy. Buy some of their current food, if possible. In not, a sensitive stomach food can help the transition. Schedule a vet visit and if the dog takes medication or supplements, make sure you have it on hand. Buy collars, leash, harness, durable chew toys, dog bed, dishes, and high value training treats. Decide where you will feed the new dog, preferably a quiet place away from other pets, at least initially. Provide them with their own fresh water inside and outdoors. Provide a large dog crate to give the dog their own space and also contain the dog while you learn how they behave indoors. Decide where the dog will sleep. When the dog arrives: Set the dog up for success by establishing trust and boundaries as soon as the dog arrives. Go for a walk around the neighborhood to help the dog burn off excess energy and relax some shelter dogs are locked up for long periods and the dog may be super excited. This will also be your initial bonding time. Big praise if they do go-your first training session together. Initially keep the dog leashed indoors helps the dog to continue to feel safe and is an extension of the trust that started being built on your neighborhood walk until you see how they act. The leash helps them feel secure while you set the pace for their first exploration in your home. It will also help you identify any triggers or fears to household objects that they might have. Begin to potty train by leading the leashed dog to where you want it to relieve itself. When it does, give lots of praise and treats. Even if its housetrained, expect some accidents. Begin simple, low pressure training when the dog arrives such as waiting for meals to be set on the floor or having the dog sit before going outside. While the family is seated, allow the leashed dog to approach and greet people rather than people approaching the dog. The dog may be excited to see someone they met previously at the shelter and gravitate toward people more familiar. Allow the dog plenty of time to sniff everyone and go from person to person. When the dog is comfortable and relaxed, family members can begin petting the dog under the chin since over the head pets and reaches can startle under socialized dogs. When to Unleash the Dog Once the dog has been shown the home and potty area and has met and is comfortable with everyone in the family, try dropping the leash to allow the dog to explore. If the dog has fear or triggers, try to remove the triggers until the dog gets more comfortable and confident. Once you and the dog are comfortable with the pup walking around the house with people coming and going, the leash can come off. You may want to leave it on if still being used to potty training, especially puppies. Feeding Tips: Give the dog a quiet place to eat away from people and other pets. Gradually test how the dog tolerates people approaching during mealtimes. Reserve some food back to handfeed as treats. To prevent resource guarding after you are comfortable with the dog, hand feed from the dog bowl so they get used to you handling their food. Introducing the Dog to Other Pets: If possible, have the dog and cat tested. Some shelters or rescues will help introduce dogs at neutral locations so get help if you need it. When introducing new dogs, get someone to help walk them separately at a neutral location. Once you see the dogs are comfortable within eye sight of each other, walk them closer together. If the dogs seem unreactive walking past each other, walk them together. Once they can be walked together, initially keep them separate at home. Slowly while leashed, allow them to meet indoors and outdoors or with one behind a fence. Use caution when bringing a German shepherd into a home with cats that may run and trigger prey drive. Since crates can be comforting to anxious dogs, rescued dogs often enjoy them especially when there is a comfy bed and chew toy inside. Leaving the crate door open during the day so the dog can come and go helps provide the dog with a sense of security. When to Start Playing with the New Dog Wait a couple weeks before introducing balls and other exciting toys to prevent the dog from getting overly stimulated or becoming possessive during the decompression period. The goal here is to have the dog in a mental place where it listens to you and is comfortable before adding lots of stimulation that could encourage resource guarding or play biting and jumping. If the dog tries to engage you in play, gets the zoomies, bows to you, etc. The bottom line, once the dog is settled in and knows you are the pack leader, and that it has to share its toys, you can begin playing games. We hope these tips ease the transition from the shelter to your home. If you need help, most shelters and rescues have experienced people to offer lots of advice. Talking to other people that have rescued German Shepherds is also helpful. Please feel free to share. Final Thoughts 1. Deciding to Adopt a German Shepherd Dog Adoption comes second after purchasing among the methods of owning dogs. But why do dog owners seek to adopt rather than buy? The most obvious reason is that people seeking to adopt a dog are concerned about animal rights and their need for a caring and safe home. It is a fact that the number of dogs in rescue shelters and needing a home is decreasing. According to an article in Animals journal, this downward trend is linked to responsible dog ownership, spaying and neutering practices, the increased cases of adoption, and lost dogs being reunited with their owners. Despite this decrease, a substantial number of dogs in public and private rescue shelters still look out of their cage mesh every day, hoping that someone will turn up and decide to take them home. Another significant number is at risk of being euthanized because they are aged and sick and cannot find someone to adopt them. This is a decline from 3. Around 1. This is also a decline from 2. About 3. Dogs account for 1. Approximately , pets from shelters are reunited with their owners every year in the US. Six hundred twenty thousand of these are dogs. From more recent data, the March report by PetPoint , a cloud-based application that gauges the demand for dog and cat adoption among pet owners each month records a decline in both the number of dogs taken into shelters and those adopted from these shelters. A decline was also recorded in the number of dogs euthanized in the same month. See the details in the table below. Total dogs taken into shelters in March Total dogs adopted from shelters in March Total dogs euthanized in March Total dogs reunited with owner in March 65, .Wanting to give these dogs a safe and caring home is the primary reason why you may choose to adopt a German Shepherd as listed here in these three key reasons for adopting a GSD: Adopting a German Shepherd reduces the number of dogs waiting to find a safe and loving home. Like all other dogs, German Shepherds impounded in public shelters risk being euthanized in days, according to most state holding laws. Every German Shepherd that is adopted leaves room for another dog that needs shelter, and the adoption cost helps in the care of other dogs in the shelter. In fact, GSDs are often listed among the ten most common dog breeds in rescue shelters. This reason alone would be good enough to choose a German Shepherd for adoption. Nevertheless, there are also breed-related reasons upon which you can decide on adopting a German Shepherd. Consider these two: German Shepherds are intelligent dogs, and even though you usually adopt them as adults, they can still adapt and learn new skills. German Shepherds are loving and loyal. As soon as they realize that you are their new companion, they will bond and be devoted to you. When researching how to adopt a German Shepherd, and subsequently deciding to adopt, you should also assess your suitability for the same — onto step 2. Assessing Your Suitability for Adopting a German Shepherd A survey by the AKC rescue network indicated that the three top reasons people surrender their dogs are because they discover that the breed is not the right one for them, they lack time to dedicate to the dog or have changed their lifestyle. These reasons underscore why it is important to understand if you will be a good parent to your adoptive GSD before proceeding with the adoption process. One way to assess your suitability for a German Shepherd is to understand the key breed traits and needs and your readiness to adapt and meet these needs. For a quick overview, here are 5 GSD traits that can help you gauge if you are a good fit for the breed. High-Energy Dog As a high-energy dog, the German Shepherd needs an average of 2 hours of exercise daily. Lack of exercise can cause them to become destructive. Would you consider signing your GSD for agility classes? Leash walking alone will not be enough for your German Shepherd. You will need to vary his exercise needs with off-leash running and play, frisbee, fetch, flyball, or agility. Intelligent As a smart dog, the German Shepherd needs constant mental stimulation. Ask yourself: How much time and patience would you devote to teaching your adoptive dog new commands, games, and tricks daily, considering that the dog may already have learned different behaviors in the shelter or with a previous owner? Are you willing to hire a professional to help with training if you find yourself unable to accomplish the same? Would you enroll your adoptive GSD in dog sports or obedience classes? Costly to Own German Shepherds can be costly to own. If you have a medium energy, smaller sized GSD with a weight of around 66lb 30kg and you choose to give a top-quality food like Royal Canin German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food, the suggested daily amount is around 4 cups a day given in two servings. Each cup is 0. The key question to ask here is: How much are you willing to spend to own a German Shepherd? Food costs are only the start as you will need to consider veterinary fees, vaccination costs, deworming and flea treatments, toys, beds, pet insurance, and other equipment. For the full costs of owning a German Shepherd, I have an in-depth article here that will give you a far better idea of what you will be looking to pay. Health Conditions Even though German Shepherds are generally healthy dogs, they can be prone to some health conditions such as hip dysplasia and Degenerative Myelopathy. For example, a study found that German Shepherds were 4. Ask yourself the following questions: Are you ready to offer the best health care for your German Shepherd dog by ensuring regular vet visits and the recommended nutrition for better health? Can you afford to take out a suitable dog insurance policy? This is highly recommended for both your budgeting and peace of mind. Would you still be dedicated to caring for your German Shepherd if he developed a health condition? Heavy Shedding The German Shepherd is a heavy shedder who molts all year round. Their level of shedding is also higher in spring and fall in preparation for the heat in summer and the cold in winter. The questions you should assess yourself on are: Do you have time for regular grooming your German Shepherd, especially in the spring and fall, when they shed more than in other months? I like this tool, as you can see from the photo of my GSD below! It reaches through her outer coat safely and removes all the loose fur underneath. You can now find a reliable rescue or shelter. You can also talk directly to GSD owners who have adopted pets. You can use this to judge if the German Shepherd you identify is the right one for you. I give you an overview of these options. You can contact all these rescue centers and seek information regarding the possibility and terms of adoption. Instead, volunteers house the German Shepherds in their homes or foster homes. They may also board them with kennels or dog sitters until someone can adopt and take them home. Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a public charity non-profit and all-volunteer rescue that works to rescue dogs from risky situations and find them a loving and safe home. They are not a shelter but instead keep the GSDs in foster homes. This rescue initiative does not take in stray dogs and will only take GSDs surrendered by their legal owners. BrightStar German Shepherd Rescue is another all-volunteer non-profit organization working to save German Shepherd Dogs by caring for them or finding them foster care until they can be adopted. The rescue shelter is based in Rochester, New York. They receive dogs from shelters or owners who can no longer care for their dogs and place them in foster homes. They also study the GSDs for some time before making them available for adoption. They welcome stray dogs and receive those transferred from other organizations and those from shelters and owners who surrender their dogs. Search Pet Adoption Websites Apart from the rescue groups listed in breed club networks, you can also search adoption sites, filtering your search to focus on the German Shepherd breed. Here are three examples of adoption sites you can target: Petfinder is an online directory of adoption organizations and animal shelters across the US, Mexico, and Canada and a database of animals in need of a home. Adopt a Pet is a non-profit adoption advertising charity site with headquarters in Indian Hill Blvd. The site helps homeless pets in shelters to find a new owner and home. You can search the site by specifying the breed, location, and distance you are looking for the pet, sex, and age. Dogtime has its headquarters in Los Angeles and has a long history of rescuing pets, among other initiatives. Adopt Through Animal Welfare Societies Animal welfare societies are non-profit organizations working for the welfare of animals in the light of animal rights and ethics. With a shelter or rescue where you can adopt a German Shepherd identified, you can now proceed to step 4 — making contact by phone and visit. Contact and Visit the Chosen Shelter or Rescue Center Your search for the right place to find your adoptive German Shepherd will probably conclude with a phone call and a visit. This should be geared at determining if it is the right place to adopt from and if a German Shepherd you have identified through your search is the right dog for you. When you visit, you should be keen to notice signs of unreliable rescues or shelters. Here are a few indicators to look for when determining if a rescue or shelter is reliable. Legal Registration As entities interested in the welfare of homeless dogs, reliable and genuine dog rescues and shelters should be legally registered as a C 3 organization. This means that, by the US International Revenue Code, these organizations are exempt from federal tax. A Long History of German Shepherd Rescue Without implying that new shelters and rescue centers cannot be reliable and reputable, one with many years of existence has made valuable experiences about adoption and separated the best adoption practices from not too good ones. For example: A shelter with years of experience may want to visit your home and ensure the German Shepherd will have a safe and loving home before letting you complete the adoption process. These questions may cover issues such as: Whether the dog was a stray or surrendered by its legal owner and why. If the dog has undergone all the recommended vaccines and tests. If the dog has any health and behavioral issues. As such, they will require you to follow certain procedures and sign an adoption contract. Reliable shelters and rescue centers: Will not allow you to adopt a dog without any written contract. Giving you a German Shepherd without a written contract should be a clear red flag. Will not require you to commit to a certain dog before you have visited or expressed your willingness to commit to it. Instead, some may grant you a trial period and require you to return the GSD should you be unable to take care of it. Adoption Cost German Shepherds can be costly to buy , but not so with adopting. Usually, animal welfare societies, shelters, and rescues cover all the costs of caring for the dog, even though some will ask you for a minimum adoption fee. Any rescue or shelter asking you for an adoption fee equivalent to a buying price would be breaching its non-profit status. The March Petpoint report also referenced earlier suggests that older dogs are adopted for less than younger ones. This implies that you may pay a little more if you adopt a puppy and less if you adopt an adult GSD. Some rescues may ask for a little more in adoption fees. Your move to contact or visit a shelter or rescue will presumably conclude with identifying a GSD for adoption. This means that you can now proceed to step 5 — completing your adoption application. Completing the Adoption Procedures In this adoption step, the animal welfare society, rescue, or shelter where you intend to adopt your German Shepherd Dog will require you to complete the following final adoption procedures. Make an Application An application is a written expression of your intention to adopt a German Shepherd. Most organizations will ask you to fill out an application form online or otherwise with details related to the following areas: Personal and contact details names, sex, age, address, home, work phone numbers, email, etc. Reasons for adoption Plans for training your German Shepherd Nature of family and lifestyle Previous pet ownership The declaration of having a certificate of good conduct Your occupation Your knowledge and involvement with dogs and dog clubs may be specific to the breed Your willingness to sign and be bound by an adoption contract See the BrightStar German Shepherd Rescue and the Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue application forms as examples. Visit the Center Visiting a center with dogs for adoption may already be done during the previous searching step. But some centers will only allow you to visit once the application has been made. This is the case with the Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue, where you first apply, wait for a response from the rescue, then proceed to identify a dog on their website before contacting the adoption counselor. Meeting with the prospective adoptive GSD is only arranged after that. In whichever step you visit the center, the expectation is that you will identify your future dog. Introducing the Dog to Your Family Introducing your adoptive German Shepherd to the family including other pets you may already have can be done in two ways. Some shelters will just proceed with a home visit. Once this is done and they are sure that the GSD and you are a good fit, then signing the adoption contract follows. Adoption contracts may have clauses requiring you to return the dog to the shelter if, for any reason, you are unable to take care of it. At last, you can now move to the final exciting step — bringing your dog home! Make sure you have purchased everything you will need, such as a comfy bed or crate, toys, leash, collar, harness, bowls, food, and treats. You can head over to this page for my personal recommendations on gear that I use. This will create a solid basis for a loving, loyal, and long-lasting bond between you and your new friend. However, if you have decided to adopt and you are suited to the breed, at least you now know how to go about it. If you still have doubts, you can also consider adopting a miniature German Shepherd. You can now proceed to find a shelter or rescue center with GSDs for adoption, visit the center, and eventually complete the adoption process by making an application and signing the contract. I hope this article has helped you understand exactly how to adopt a German Shepherd step by step. Before you know it, your new gorgeous companion will be ready to come home. Good luck! Related Posts You May Like:. Myth Myth 1: I have small children, so I want a puppy. Without a doubt, this is the most common reason people want a puppy. A sweet, small puppy just seems like the best choice for sweet, small children. You know that cute Kodak commercial with the puppies climbing all over the giggling little boy? Have you ever noticed how short it is? Puppies have needle-teeth that they happily sink into anyone who walks by. They also have sharp nails that scratch when they jump up -- and on little Ryan, those front feet land right around his face. Puppies leave "presents" that your toddler always seems to find before you do. Puppies wake your children during the night. And suppose you get a puppy when little Morgan is 2. In six months, Morgan will be about 1 inch taller and 3 pounds heavier. However, the 8 month old puppy will now be as tall as Morgan and outweigh her by 30 pounds. And those baby teeth will have been replaced by big snappers that need to chew. Of course, puppies and small children do successfully cohabitate. Seems to make sense, except the exact opposite is true. All puppies are cute; all puppies love everyone. Purebred is not the same as well-bred, and sometimes it feels like the disreputable breeders grossly outnumber the responsible ones. We insist on a fence or leash walks. I know you believed he was perfect, but you also believed in Santa and honest government then, too. He died in my freshman year of college, and has since, in family lore, gone on to be canonized as "Saint Max". Bow your head when you say it. Everyone in my family seems to forget the time St. Max was hit by a car he was chasing. Or the time he bit the kid biking by. Or how he used to sneak in and sleep on the furniture when no one was home. Or the time he had diarrhea all over the hardwood floors. Or how he used to eat the Christmas ornaments off the bottom half of the tree. Myth 5: German Shepherds stop being puppies around a year old. Try 2 or 3. And you know that wonderful mental image you have of the stoic and noble shepherd sitting on the hill surveying his domain? Myth 6: I want a dog without dominance issues, so I want a female. Myth 7: White GSDs are mutants. Well, if they are, more breeds should mutate. Myth 8: My 8 month old German Shepherd is biting people. The secret here is to look at the last 4 letters in the breed name: herd. German Shepherds herd. This is called this mouthing. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to fix in most dogs. If the problem is really out of hand, you may need to call in a trainer for a few sessions. That sound you hear is all the people with rescued dogs falling over laughing. At some point during the day, someone may remember to bring him food and water. The only attention he gets is when they yell at him for barking - or worse. Finally, they take him for a car-ride--dumping him in a wooded area where he can have a "fighting chance. He finds water somewhere. He raids trash cans and gets sick. Then he sits in the loud, scary shelter run, starting to lose faith that his family will ever find him. The kennel people are nice, but he is one of a hundred needy dogs they have to care for so he gets no real attention. Finally, the shelter calls us. And you take him home. You not only bring him into your house, you give him his own bed and bowl, and maybe a crate where he feels safe. You speak quietly to him. You feed him regularly AND give him toys and treats and nylabones. He sleeps in your room. He may even have a big brother or sister to play with. He gets kisses and hugs all the time for "no reason". And when he goes out in the car, he always comes back. GSDs are particularly sensitive about the connections with their people so once they have the attention they so desperately crave and need, they do whatever they can to ensure they never, ever lose it. People with rescue dogs learn to function with a 70 pound shadow following us everywhere. That said, there are some dogs who just never learned to connect with people, but that becomes apparent very quickly--long before we place him with you. If everyone prevented irresponsible breeding, we'd be happily out of business. Do not humanize your dog--no one's asking you to neuter yourself. Neutered male dogs roam less, mark less territory, and are generally less aggressive. Spayed female dogs avoid the messy and annoying heat cycles, and are not at risk for unwanted pregnancy. And both males and females are less likely to get certain illnesses. It happens every day at your local animal shelter. But most parents are not as eager for their children to see that. Reprints and modifications for breeds permitted as long as you give us credit! History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? The double-coat, with a thick undercoat that sheds twice annually, loses hair continuously but can be maintained with regular brushing one or two times weekly. What are the German Shepherd Dog colors? Black, tan, solid black and solid sable. How long do German Shepherd Dogs live? Lifespan: 10—12 years What are some German Shepherd Dogs facts and information? The German Shepherd held the number one spot in American popularity for many years. Although presently it has dropped from the top spot, the German Shepherd remains as one of the most versatile dogs ever created, serving as a police dog, war dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, narcotics- or explosives-detecting dog, show dog, pet—and even shepherd. What is the breeding process at Snowy River Doodles? Our breeding program focuses on producing puppies with excellent temperaments, sound health, and beautiful coats. We carefully select our breeding dogs from top-quality lines, ensuring the highest standards in health and temperament. Our puppy has begun potty training and crate training. What does that mean? We use a litter box placed in their pen starting at three weeks of age and gradually make the pen larger as they begin to recognize the potty area. This trains the puppies to potty in one area. When you go home, that area will be outside. At six weeks, they begin spending time outside. At this time, they also start eating at least one meal a day in a crate by themselves and they spend some time in a crate for a few hours during the day. We put an old towel and chew toy in the crate with them. Do you ship? No, we no longer ship puppies. We feel that there are enough labradoodle breeders across the country to find one locally and there is no need to put a puppy through this stressful process. I am willing to meet owners at the Philadelphia or Harrisburg Airport if you wish to fly in and take your puppy back home with you under your seat. Please inquire if you are interested in this. There are additional fees and requirements. Our Labradoodle puppies are raised in a loving home environment where they receive early socialization and basic training. We introduce them to various sounds, surfaces, and experiences to ensure they are well-adjusted and prepared for life with their new families. Can I visit Snowy River Doodles to meet the puppies and their parents? At Snowy River, we prioritize the health and safety of our puppies. Only families with deposits will be able to visit once puppies are 6 weeks old. And meet the parents at that time. His parents are Tally and Huey. It means a coat is 'plushier' than the short coat, and is preferred more in the show ring. It's basically is a longer, fuller coat. This term can be used on a Stock Coat short or Long Stock long coat dogs, depending on who is using it. Image: Chelsey V. The undercoat will be thinner in the summer and thicker in winter. As a puppy, you can not tell how long it will be. Long and full is desired with sort of a lions mane. It will not grow as long or thick in hotter climates. These dogs are stunning and in high demand. It parts down the middle of the back. It is soft, sort of fly away hair, light and very long. There is never an undercoat. It has long hair or feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. A puppy inherits only one gene form each parent. A long coat has been considered undesirable for many decades, and historically there were just short stock dogs used in breeding and selection. This puppy was considered a fault in the litter. A long coat is demonstrated only when a dog is homozygous on gene "l" - has pair of recessive l alleles at this locus. This is done to have more predictability in breeding, as mating between heterozygous dogs is highly unpredictable and has a large variety of possible outcome from producing puppies of pure short stock LL , to carriers Ll and Pure Long Coat ll. While this seems like a great idea to outcross all heterozygous on the Locus L dogs from breeding programs, this will take some time. Many "plush" dogs are very active in breeding, as frankly, they look great and thicker coat is an added benefit to those breeders that still do not accept Long Coat dogs. Large probability is only scary to those that do not understand how to predict the outcome. We enjoy learning and studying and have pretty clear understanding of what to expect in our breeding. Vom Geliebten Haus. It was not long before people realised that this was a dog of extraordinary intelligence suited for working. The first registered dog in the studbook was Horand von Grafath. Two of these were Freia vom Park and Stephen vom Park. Others were imported to Melbourne around , with other states soon following. During the ban, which continued for another 43 years, a number of GSDs were smuggled into the country. The ban was lifted in , with some restrictions remaining until .The breed then enjoyed a surge in popularity, with record numbers of GSDs being shown at national shows during the s. The popularity peaked during the s, when the GSD became the most common breed in Australia in terms of registrations of puppies. Today the breed is still one of the most frequently registered. In , the GSD standard was amended to include the Long Stock Coat variety, which was previously ungraded in the show ring. From 1 January , Long Stock Coats were separately registered, could be exhibited as such, and compete independently from Stock Coat varieties. The standard for both varieties is identical except for coat description, representing a major change in breed history. Appearance The GSD is medium-sized, slightly elongated, strong and well muscled; the bones are dry and the overall construction firm. The length of the body is greater than the height at the withers by about 10 —17 per cent. The normal coated GSD should carry a thick undercoat and the outer coat should be as dense as possible and be made up of straight, hard, close lying hairs. The correct coat is weatherproof, allowing the dog to work in all conditions. The long-haired GSD has longer hairs, particularly around and inside the ears and on the back of the legs and feet. The trousers are long and thick and the tail is very bushy. The top coat should be long, soft and not close fitting, with feathering on the ears and legs, bushy breeches and bushy tail forming flags below. It should be short on the head including the inside of the ears, the front side of the legs, on the feet and toes, it is longer and heavily coated on the neck, almost forming a mane. The hair lengthens on the back of the legs to the pasterns or hock joints; and on the back of the thighs it forms distinct breeching. Black and tan gold with the black saddle pattern and black mask on the face is the most common colour. Sable dogs red or grey would be the next most common colour. These dogs have black tipping of the coat in a similar saddle pattern, but it can be more extensive over the body. Black dogs are less commonly seen these days. The undercoat is, except in all-black dogs, usually grey or fawn in colour. Small white markings on chest as well as a lighter colour on the insides of legs is permissible but not desirable. The nose must be black in all colour types. The colour white is not permitted in the standard. White is a recessive colour that virtually is never seen in the current bloodlines. Early on, white was undesirable as it was too easily seen at night and could not be readily distinguished from the sheep. It possesses instinctive drive, resilience and self-confidence, and is suitable as a companion, watch dog and protection, service and herding dog. The GSD is recognised for is its excellent character, marked by its courage, intelligence, devotion and nobility. GSDs love human companionship and owners will find that this breed just wants to be with, and please them. GSDs have a distinct personality marked by an intelligence and fearlessness that does not generally tend to make immediate friendships. Although it is normal for these dogs to appear aloof, they should be approachable and never hostile when with their owners. GSDs have a keen sense of humour and enjoy playful games that keep their active minds alert. Once you accept this breed into your family, you will gain an intelligent, loyal pet that will give you a lifetime of love, affection and fulfilment. GSDs are a double-coated breed, with a coarse, water-resistant outer coat and a heavy, woolly undercoat. The outer coat hairs are shed regularly while the inner coat hairs are shed twice a year, more heavily in spring, and may require daily or weekly combing when dropping coat. The breed requires no clipping and only occasional baths. Suitability GSDs, particularly bitches, are generally very good with children. Male dogs, unless raised with young children, may not be as forgiving of minor insults or injuries. Adult GSDs will generally tolerate a degree of rough play from young children. The GSD requires lots of contact with people, particularly in the early formative stages up to 20 weeks. With poor socialisation, or a lack of firm and consistent handling, they can become spoilt and unruly. With a GSD, one should be consistent, kind and firm. Adult GSDs are active and will require lots of exercise, puppies on the other hand, should not be over exercised; rather, gradually increase the exercise over time until, as young adult dogs, they are being taken on daily walks. GSDs also need a lot of space, such as a fenced yard or decent sized dog run. As with most working dogs, GSDs can become easily bored and even destructive if not given adequate outlets for their energy. Health As with most breeds there are genetic diseases, but responsible breeders do regular health checks before breeding. Even though both parents may have stock coats, some of the progeny may have long coats. The chart below shows the possibilities. The pictures below show puppies we have bred. This is the desired coat according to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America Standard and can vary from very short to plush hair with an undercoat. They usually have longer fluffy hair around their ears and on the rest of their bodies and are beautiful animals. Our Karma carries this recessive gene and in our litters the Coated puppies have often been among the first to be chosen! The gene involved in this type of puppy is a simple recessive gene making Coated dogs somewhat rarer. Both parents are required to be coated or carry the recessive gene in order to produce long coated puppies. Even after many years of carefully planned breeding, a few coated puppies are occasionally born into a litter from Stock Coat parents because each parent is carrying the recessive gene. Some breeders try to breed this out of their bloodlines. Long Coat puppies can appear in litters from two stock coated dogs because each parent is carrying a recessive gene. Both of these dogs could be bred to different mates who do not carry the gene, and both could potentially produce litters without any coated offspring. A Long Coat puppy can often be an indication that the whole litter is going to be a good one. This is because the sires and dams who have produced the litter are carriers of strong genetics from their ancestors. Puppies with this recessive gene generally have a strong-boned body structure, are exceptionally good-natured and are of sound character. It is not uncommon to see police and military service dogs that are coated. This is because Coated dogs can be purchased cheaper while still having the genetics to meet the requirements of other working dogs. The reason why a Long Coat is considered a fault is because when used on a farm with mud or herding, their long hair catches and holds more mud, dirt, debris, cockleburs and other clingy weeds and vegetation. There is a little more grooming maintenance and more hair to shed. However, there is a good market demand for Long Coats and we know breeders intentionally breeding for Long Coats. The hair parts down the middle of the back and flows down the sides of the dog. Many have never seen or heard of this type of coat. In the past, they were allowed to participate in Schutzhund, but were disqualified from the show ring and breeding. Regardless, a German Shepherd dog still requires an undercoat or it is considered to be a fault. A Long Coat has a longer coat, with tufts in the ears, feathers on the feet and has an undercoat. Plush Coat German Shepherds do not have usually feathering of any type. A "Plush Coat" is considered very desirable for Conformation. The Plush Coat German Shepherds have a much longer length of hair compared to the standard coated dogs and a much fuller undercoat as well. Their hair is thicker, fuller and just longer overall than a Stock Coat. Often a Plush Coat will carry the Long Coat gene. Note: Until , there were three distinct German Shepherd coat types: smooth haired, longhaired and wirehaired. The wirehaired variety has since disappeared. Remember that regardless the type of coat, a German Shepherd will still shed!

These trends are based on owner-observed differences between Labrador colors. Labradoodle Temperament Of course, the temperament of the individual Labrador parent will be a large influence. Chocolate Labradoodles are usually also quite friendly, playful, and energetic. Although they can be somewhat reserved around strangers. This particular trait is common in Poodles. But it can be dampened down by regular socialization. Labradoodles are strong and active. They are often chosen for hunting and farm work as well as for public service. In addition, Labradoodles make excellent seeing-eye dogs, guide dogs, and other types of service dogs. Training Requirements of the Labradoodle Labradoodles are easy to train and they respond best to positive reinforcement training. Plus, Labradoodles require frequent interaction and positive reinforcement training. This is something recommended for all breeds. They also benefit from lots of activity. This can help reduce behaviors like jumping around small children and other guests. Chocolate Labradoodle Health There is little detailed evidence to suggest the chocolate color has any link to overall health. But, a limited amount of research shows that chocolate Labrador Retrievers are becoming less healthy as a breed. And therefore, dying much younger sooner than black or yellow Labradors. Genes The gene that creates a chocolate coat is recessive. So, breeders that want to guarantee a high proportion of chocolate-colored puppies in their litters must mate two chocolate-colored Labs. As a result, the gene pool is much narrower and the risk of inheriting health conditions is higher. This includes problems like obesity, ear infections, and skin problems As a result, it is possible that your chocolate Labradoodle may suffer from the same health conditions as its Labrador parent. Inherited Health Conditions Ultimately, any health issues your dog inherits will depend on the genetics of the parents. And how purebred the parents are. If your dog was bred from a purebred Labrador and a purebred Poodle, it can be tough to determine what kind of health problems your dog might have. After breeding further generations of chocolate Labradoodles together, it may be easier to determine which health conditions are genetic. Health Testing Always select a breeder who has tested the chocolate Labradoodles for known genetic health problems. According to the Canine Health Information Center, you may want to test your chocolate Labradoodle for problems such as: hip and elbow dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability As puppies, Labradoodles look like tiny, fuzzy teddy bears. In reality, this cross-breed can be a great deal to handle for first-time dog owners or those looking for a more hands-off canine companion. What does this mean? The Lab Poodle mix awkwardly straddles the worlds of purebred and mutt. On the one hand, Labradoodles are purposely bred and sold for tons of cash. On the other, the cross-breed is not recognized or regulated by any major dog organization at least in the United States. Many breeders also turn to in-breeding to achieve desirable puppies. Yes, Labradoodles can make incredible pets, and there are countless well-intentioned breeders out there. Unfortunately, this also means many Labradoodles end up causing discomfort for misinformed households. The Labradoodle might boast a Poodle-like coat, but hair type has nothing to do with canine allergens. Instead, your allergies are probably triggered by the dander a. If you or a family member requires a hypoallergenic dog, then the Labradoodle might not be the best option! While the regular Labradoodle is just a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, the Australian Labradoodle includes genetics from the Cocker Spaniel and other unknown breeds. Labradoodles come in a variety of colors and patterns, from stark white to tri-colored. In this regard, the Labradoodle definitely takes after the Poodle. Despite what many lovers of the cross-breed believe, Labradoodles can also have more than one type of fur. While the most popular coat texture is wavy, you can also find puppies with extremely curly and straight fur! With consistent socialization and training, though, these traits can be easily managed. A well-adjusted Labradoodle is friendly, mellow, and ready for anything the world has to offer. Labradoodles who have not been taught to manage their excitement, especially around strangers and other dogs, can quickly cause issues. Before bringing home a Labradoodle puppy, take note that poor genetics often lead to behavioral and temperamental issues. While this is true for any dog — purebred, hybrid, or full-on mutt — it is a well-documented problem within the Labradoodle community. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Most Labradoodles are fairly large, reaching up to 65 pounds, so these eager playmates will easily mow down small children. Labradoodles are bred to be friendly and relaxed around strangers, making them terrible guard dogs. Because of its generally low prey drive, the Labradoodle is a great option for households with cats or small dogs. Please reference the feeding guidelines of your chosen food — every formula has slightly different serving recommendations. You should also aim to go on two long walks per day. While puzzles are a great way to meet these needs, adventure walks meandering walks or hikes where your dog can sniff and explore a new environment are also an excellent choice. A lack of room to run around and burn excess energy can rapidly breed destructive habits. The combination of high intelligence and overall friendliness makes the Labradoodle great for experienced and first-time dog owners who are willing to invest in lifelong training. Even naturally friendly dogs can suffer if not properly socialized from an early age. Like Poodles, Labradoodle coats can be cut in a variety of functional and fashionable ways. However, the lack of standardized breeding and immense popularity means many Labradoodles carry poor genetics. Labradoodles are most affected by conditions common among Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Regular vet visits can help keep your pup healthy and catch early signs of disease. Here are the most common health conditions known to affect Labradoodles: Minor Conditions. View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Labradoodle Puppies Image Credit: Danii Brown Photography, Shutterstock Labradoodle puppies are highly intelligent and social, and tend to be good with children and other pets. They are also known for being easily trained and make great family pets. Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes, coat types, and colors, which can range from straight to curly and from black to cream. Labradoodles, like all hybrid breeds, can exhibit a range of physical and behavioral traits from both parent breeds, so it is important to research the background of the individual dog to get a sense of what to expect. These are smart and loveable dogs that enjoy following commands and completing tasks. This is another reason that Labradoodles are used as service and therapy dogs. Their gentle dispositions combined with their intelligence and love for people make them ideal for anyone, from first-time dog owners to those with a house full of pets. They are low-maintenance dogs that are happy to spend time with their families. They can suffer from separation anxiety if they are left alone for too long. This can manifest through barking, howling, pacing, urinating in the house, and being destructive. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They get along well with kids, but their large size and playful natures could overwhelm small children. If this breed is properly trained and socialized, they make loyal companions that are devoted to their families. Labradoodles love people and other animals alike and get along well with other pets in the home. Their gentle and accepting personalities make them ideal for a home with other animals. The best way to ensure that your Labradoodle will be friends with the other animals in the household is to raise the animals together. Puppies will grow to love and accept other housemates as family. Adding a Labradoodle puppy to a house with other pets is easier than adding an adult Labradoodle to the mix. That said, while it may take longer for the adult dog to become familiar with everyone, they will be happy to do so. Training and socialization when the Labradoodle is a puppy, though, are crucial to their success living with other animals. However, there are several requirements to be aware of when welcoming this dog into your home. Here are a few things to consider about owning Labradoodles. When you bring your puppy home, they should be kept on the same diet that they were eating previously. This will help you avoid any digestive distress from a sudden change in food. A high-quality, protein-packed kibble will work well for puppies and adult Labradoodles. There is no one universal dog food that will offer the same nutrients to every dog. Just like people, different dogs need specialized diets suited to their needs. Treats are always welcome by Labradoodles and are motivators during training. A handful of dry kibble offered piece by piece will also work, depending on how food-motivated your dog is and how much they enjoy their food. They can go from sleeping on the sofa to up and waiting at the door to go outside in seconds. They require exercise to be healthy and happy but also to avoid them becoming bored. A bored Labradoodle will make up their own activities, and these may not always be the things that you want them to be doing. A minute play session per day in a fenced-in area where the dog can run or chase a ball will provide the mental and physical stimulation that they need. However you choose to do it, your Labradoodle will enjoy the exercise and the time with you. They like learning new things and following commands. Their trainability makes them reliable and competent service dogs. If you welcome this dog to your home as a pet, there are a few things that you can do to help them be the best they can be. Socializing your new puppy is the most important step to take from the time that you bring them home. This encourages your dog to not fear new experiences, people, or places and instead, to be intrigued by new things. A puppy socialization class is a good place to start. Playdates with your friends and their dogs will help your dog learn to make friends. Obedience classes will teach your dog basic manners and how to follow simple instructions. From there, you can move on to agility classes, to help your dog get the exercise that they need while focusing on an activity. Patience and repetition are required from you so your dog associates learning with a positive experience. If you get this done professionally, it will include a haircut, nail trim, and bath. Regular nail trims are important for paw health. Overgrown nails can be painful and make walking difficult for your dog. In addition, the popularity of Labradoodles has increased, leading to overbreeding and irresponsible breeding. If you have a Labradoodle, these are potential issues that could arise down the road. Regular veterinary exams are important for the prevention and detection of these conditions. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? A Labradoodle is a popular designer dog breed. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. However, it did not become popular until when the mix was specifically bred to create hypoallergenic guide dogs. Featured Labradoodle Article.
