Grooming If you want your Bruiser to have a shiny coat and healthy skin, grooming is a must. Many experts believe Bulldogs should be thoroughly brushed at least three times a week. We have found that most of our Bulldogs love to be brushed. Use a soft bristle or rubber brush. Start at the rear and brush against the hair. Follow this with a good rub down. This will keep his hair shiny and his skin healthy. The idea is to remove the dead hair and distribute the natural oils. Consistent grooming will keep your Bruiser healthy and out of the bathtub as much as possible. This is why we stress brushing your Bruiser. Frequent brushing allows you to avoid those skin drying baths. Whenever a bath is needed, use a deep sink or bathtub filled half-way with lukewarm water. Before you wet the coat, place dry cotton balls gently in both ears so that no water accidentally gets into the ear canals. You will clean the face later with a wet washcloth. After the shampoo is applied, you will need to rinse completely with fresh warm water and then rinse again. Any shampoo residue left behind can irritate English Bulldog skin. Next you will need to clean the face, including those delicate Bulldog wrinkles. You can now towel dry your English Bulldog and remove the cotton balls. Wrinkles English Bulldogs have wrinkles that need to be cleansed thoroughly. We have found that bathing your Bruiser is not the only time to clean wrinkles. Wrinkle cleaning should actually should be done daily. This in return becomes an ideal breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria that can eventually lead to infection. To prevent this from happening, clean the wrinkles, inside and out, daily with a wet washcloth. Remember to never use soap or shampoo on the facial wrinkles. After cleaning those Bruiser Bulldog wrinkles, gently dry them with a blow dryer set to low or cool heat. Bedding Deep down, your Bruiser really wants to sleep in your bed with you as an owner and English Bulldog breeder we know the struggle! Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. Prairie Wolf Park in Caledonia — Remains of an apple orchard at the front of the park, paved and unpaved trails — not too many people especially when we do sessions in the early morning and evening. Johnson Park Hager Park in Jenison — great place to photograph after the fall leaves are gone and before the green of spring comes out. Lots of green from pines and arborvitae toward the front of the park. Hager Park Downtown west side of Grand River — Blue Bridge down through Ah-Nab-Awen Park evening sessions only — great place for evening sessions if you want more color than a park and a little more of an urban feel to your photographs. Downtown GR west side of the Grand River Downtown east side of Grand River — Blue Bridge — central area around Monroe, Pearl and Ottawa weekend morning sessions only — great place for morning sessions, if you want your photos to have an urban feel. There is a small travel fee for this location. We usually require a morning session, as there are less people and dogs in parks in the morning than the evening. We photograph a lot of reactive dogs and have had much success at Johnson Park first thing in the morning - during a lot of these session we never even saw another person or dog. It is also possible to do a reactive dog in his own yard, if photographing at a park is just totally not possible. When do sessions take place? We are limited to how many session we do a week, or we get too far behind on editing files. So, if there is a particular date you need for your session - it is best to book the session as soon as possible. We avoid late morning to late afternoon sessions because the light is more contrasty at this time and less flattering for dogs and people alike. The exact session times depend on the season — how long or short the days are. You will receive an approximate time when you book and a firm time a few days before your session. He will never cooperate for a session. If your pups are anything like ours, they know basic obedience commands, but somehow always seem to forget when it comes to having their photo taken. Locations that are free of visual distractions buildings, play equipment, etc. Can you have a session in your yard? Yes, of course - if that is what you want. He was extremely emaciated, he had no hair, covered in parasites, and extremely afraid of everything. He could barely walk when I got him. A few months after losing another rescue of mine I was really considering adopting another dog because I needed some form of protection living in a rough neighborhood. One day, while I was sitting in my living room my neighbor knocked on my door, "Hey, there's a Boxer outside running around crazy, and the owner doesn't want it. OK, I will take a look! I saw that happy face and that wiggly butt, I was in love! I said yes! Little did I know what I was getting myself into. This dog was an absolute nightmare, lol! At first she barged out of every door, broke every collar, leash, chain, tie-out cable we bought! She was horrified of so many things. She had separation anxiety really bad, so bad she made herself bleed to get out. After a very long and bumpy road we finally accomplished what I dreamed: "the perfect dog. She is so well-behaved and excellent mannered. She even stops on a dime if I tell her to. She is my everything! I have taught her a lot, but not as much as she has taught me. She taught me patience, understanding, love, devotion, and so much more. She has won the hearts of everyone she has met AND has even made a dog lover out of the people who were "scared" of dogs or "hated" dogs. I take her everywhere with me. She loves her bath time, especially playing "torro" with the towel during drying time! She hugs me, and she gives me the gentlest kisses. She has no aggression toward anything or anyone, she loves everything! This dog is my entire world. She always rests her head on my lap and gives me those soulful puppy dog eyes. Unlike any other dogs I've ever had she and I communicate mentally or something. She and I just know what each other want. Before I got her she had never been out other than a quick potty break on a 4-foot lead. She also had been through a lot of owners. She's great inside now, though! With all that work she's perfect inside! I can leave a whole plate of food on the floor for hours while I'm not in the room and she won't touch it. No accidents, never chewed on anything, very quiet. She's my angel. Her favorite activity would be eating. She's loves food. This is a dog who has taught me to be strong, all good things are worth fighting for, never give up, and you never get the dog you want, always the dog you need. I cannot say I follow his methods, because I have been training my dogs this same way before I ever heard of him. I also train therapy dogs, and guide dogs. Not certified, or anything. I rescue dogs and train them to help those who don't want to go through the certified Therapy Dog Associations for such reasons as waiting lists. I thank god for Cesar, though, because he is one of the few proving that Pit Bulls can be rehabilitated, and showing the world everything they need to know to save their dog's life. My love for Baby Girl made me fall in love with Boxers period, which led me into rescuing another Boxer, so I guess in a way she's saved two lives. Just like me. She's been through a lot, and has come very far. Most important thing she didn't give up on me, either.
