All of our puppies are raised with their mama in the middle of our home with our three fantastic, dog savvy children our puppy whisperer's , following Puppy Culture and other puppy imprinting protocols, allowing for the foundation that is critical for developing their amazing gentle and loving temperaments and preparing them for the world. All of our adult dogs in our program live in trusted amazing guardian homes, to insure they have a wonderful lifestyle, where they will continue to live when they retire. All of our puppies are raised personally by us, in our home. We strongly encourage ALL of our puppy buyers to purchase a copy of Puppy Culture so they can follow along with us as we raise their puppy, and so they can continue our hard work, once they bring their puppy home. The half an hour every night it takes to teach puppies to take treats so that you can later reward them effectively. The 3 hours a night it takes to go through the whole litter for their first box game. The 15 minutes per puppy that it takes to teach them that you grabbing their prized possession is the best thing that could ever happen. These are the activities which give them the tools to seek enrichment and interact with their world in a confident manner. This is what makes them brave. We provide special bedding that allows our puppies to have traction while crawling on their tummies. Proper traction in the whelping box is crucial for proper hip and knee development—as research is proving the connection between hip dysplasia and environment factors such as whelping box material. Our puppies are weighed twice daily to ensure they are taking in enough milk and growing properly. We start doing car rides with them do desensitize them to the motion of being in a car. Around week three, we introduce food to them and give them a potty tray in with their bedding. This is because they instinctively start leaving their nursing bed to eliminate. Within a week, puppies will using the litter tray more often than their bedding. We complete the ENS program and continue petting and holding our puppies. You may not think much can be done with such a young puppy—but it is quite the opposite. At three weeks old, studies have proven that puppies have virtually no fear. They do, however, have a strong startle reflex. Dropping metal dog-food-dishes, banging around, vacuuming, sneezing, coughing, dropping a stack of books… anything that will cause the puppies to startle. We use a speaker and play Canine Audio Therapy noises. In addition, we clip puppy nails to start their acceptance of feet handling. And lastly, we are sure to remove puppies, one at a time and spend individual time with each one. This helps begin a healthy bond with humans, as well as reduce separation anxiety later in life. Studies have proven that physical activity in young puppies actually helps their brains grow the ability to learn and bond. So during this time, we make their living space larger. We continue exposing them to new obstacles and sounds as well as give them challenges to overcome. We set up problem solving scenarios such as an simple barrier between them and their food that they must learn to go around, to find food. Problem solving and learning are crucial at this young age, and we have a lot of fun creating ways to do it! As the puppies approach 5 weeks of age, however… the game changes. The puppies now develop true fear responses, so we use more caution in exposure. During this sensitive time, we are watching closely for individual reactions so we know if we need to help a particular puppy overcome a fear stage of a particular sound, item, smell or texture. They are coming into a peak time for socializing and continuing positive experiences. This is a great age to introduce them to as many appropriate people as possible. We also introduce more less-stable objects such as miniature agility equipment, which helps build their self confidence. We have the puppies evaluated by Pat Hastings at this age. She looks at the structure of the dog including the head and a little bit of temperament. This is a very important day for the litter because this is when we decide if we are keeping a puppy for our breeding program. Puppies visit the vet, are vaccinated, microchipped and puppy bags are packed! Home-raised, hand-held, child-tested Australian Labradoodles from Oregon. When selecting a breeder, this may be the most important factor to consider after you have ensured that your breeder has puppies with the correct bloodline and heritage. Why does it matter how they are raised? They are just puppies. What can they really learn when they are so young and fragile? In fact, research has shown that the overall success and happiness of the puppy is mostly formed during the first 12 weeks. If you would like a puppy to grow into a dog that is social, has the correct temperament, confident, obedient, and happy, the process will start while the puppy is under the care of a responsible breeder. And that is why we use a puppy curriculum that uses both Puppy Culture and Empowered Breeder programs. We want the best or our puppies. When we say that we work hard to ensure that our puppies are loved and cared for during the first few weeks before they go to their new home, we really mean it. It is our belief that this attention and care will manifest itself in our puppies' being ready to be a wonderful addition to their new family. This whole process actually starts before the puppies are even born. The week prior to the puppies being born, we spend time with the mother loving and caressing her side so the puppies get a jump start in responding to human touch. We ensure the mother is well fed, restful, and kept in a tranquil nursery allowing the puppies to arrive in the best environment possible. The First 16 Days.When they arrive they are so sweet. Unable to walk, helpless, eyes and ears closed, making sweet sounds, sleeping in little piles, and drinking all the milk they can before falling back asleep. It is during these first 16 days that we keep the puppies safe, low stress, well fed, and weigh them often to see that everyone is doing well. We spend a lot of time touching and handling them to get them familiar with human touch on each part of their bodies. We also use Early Neurological Stimulation ENS exercises daily to improve the puppies blood pressure, ability to deal with low tress, and nervous system development. The mother is placed on a special diet and we work to help her manage the stress involved with caring for the litter to not allow the puppies or mother to be placed under too much stress. All of this to help the puppy develop even during this small window that you would think there is nothing to do with them except watch over them and the mother. Week .Becoming Individuals Around the third week we see the puppies transition from helpless furry puppies and begin to establish themselves as individuals. They begin to see and walk in what seems like slow motion. Soon they start to hear sounds and begin the process of exploring their littermates and their surroundings in the den. It is at this time they also begin to use the bathroom on their own, making noises at littermates, and crawling begins. We continue to have a lot of contact with the puppies by touching and playing with them. All this is done in the safety of the whelping box. Introducing new toys to help them explore new textures and shapes. Daily Individual time spent with each puppy outside of the den also helps each puppy to learn and grow on their own. Potty stations are set up to help start to learn potty training. It is amazing how quick they pick this up. It is during the third and fourth week that we begin to enrich the puppies emotional development. The den becomes bigger and new things are introduced to allow the puppy to learn how to be startled and recover from their fear quickly. Simple exercises like dropping things, running the vacuum cleaner, music, tv, introducing new objects, and sounds all to help show the puppy not to fear but explore. All of this allows the puppy to grow into a dog that doesn't fear new things but sees them as not harmful and should be explored. We introduce low stress learning and problem solving training to help the puppy learn how to solve frustration and stress in a meaningful way without aggression. We want them to seek out new challenges, solve them, and we try to give them the opportunity to learn these early skills to be a well balanced dog that loves to explore and embrace new things. You teach puppies how to speak? No, what we teach them is how to begin to understand to communicate with humans in the proper way. We do this through clicker training. Teaching the puppies to respond to a marker a clicker and learn to offer a behavior. This teaches them to ask for what they want in the correct way. In other words, they gain a voice and learn how to speak to us. The goal is for the puppy to learn that the way to get what they want is to go through their owner and thus learning how to communicate with a human. After several short training sessions the idea is that the puppies learn the way to speak to a human is to first sit down. Then they get the love and attention they desire. Overcoming Fears Week 5 brings new challenges as the puppies enter a period that fear may become more real to them and can often leave lasting scars and imprinting. During this period we are careful to continue developing the puppies ability to respond to fear quickly by introducing new things for them to learn from but always looking for the newfound awareness of things can now be scary. So we introduce objects and challenges and then look for areas the puppies may need help overcoming a fear within an environment of low stress. Thus building the puppies confidence as we individually help them to overcome a partial fear and still continue to be a seeker of exploring new things. Temperament Testing and Encouraging Their Curiosity During this period we begin Temperament testing to better understand and help our puppies develop before going to their new forever homes. So we introduce them to as many things as we can without impacting them in a negative way. Helping them to learn about unstable and elevated surfaces, objects over their heads, etc. All designed to teach life lessons and help with coping with everyday challenges when they are older. Potty training continues with giving the puppy the opportunity to do what they know to do and keep the den clean. This comes very natural to the puppies. With this stage of the puppies life there are several other areas that need to be addressed such as biting, resource guarding, and handling. So we work with each of the puppies discouraging biting, learning how to share resources through training sessions, and we continue to help the puppy to remain comfortable with being touched on all parts of their body. All of these offer huge rewards for dog owners as the puppy has already been conditioned to learn how to copy with these challenges during this period that it is much easier for them to learn. Thus helping to eliminate unwanted natural instincts not wanted by most owners. Individual Training In Week 7 and 8 we begin to look for areas that the individual puppies may need help with and address these areas with additional love and training. Week 8 will often bring another period of fear development. We continue to ensure the puppies are not exposed to any single event that could have lasting negative impressions. Making sure that none of the positive training is undone during this short period before they head to their forever homes. Colorado Mountain Labradoodles utilize early neurological stimulation, as well as the puppy culture method which represents a gold standard in puppy rearing and early socialization. They quickly learn standard obedience commands, such as sit, down, come and stay. They thrive on being mentally and physically engaged. They love playing and interacting with people and other dogs, especially in games involving chase, fetch or hide-and-seek. Families also find that our labradoodles enjoy participating in competitive canine activities, such as tricks, agility and obedience. As with almost any breed, their socialization and training should start at an early age and continue throughout their life. They share a love of water with their field Labrador and Poodle ancestors and often will enter water without prompting. All of our puppies receive love and care from everyone in the family. In fact, according to the American Kennel Club , German Shepherds are the second most popular dog in America, sitting just behind the ever famous Labrador Retriever. Beloved for their intelligence, eager-to-please nature, and stunning beauty, German Shepherds serve not only as incredible family companion dogs, but also perform a variety of service work including military work, police work, therapy dogs and more. But what about the long haired German Shepherd makes him so unique? While most of his characteristics, temperamental traits and health issues align with the classic, short haired German Shepherd, the long haired German Shepherd does have a few differences you should be aware of. While long haired German Shepherds can be born into a litter with short haired German Shepherd siblings, the long haired pup will be considered a defective coat type, oftentimes leading him to be sold for cheaper. This is because the long haired German Shepherd is not considered an official type of German Shepherd, and is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, nor is the coat considered part of the breed standard. He is a top choice for families and works proudly as a service dog, military dog, police dog, and therapy dog for those in need. Furthermore, there are hardly many differences between the long haired German Shepherd and the classic German Shepherd, outside of coat type. This means that temperament, exercise, health issues, and lifespan are all relatively identical. Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule. Perhaps one of the more interesting facts about the long haired German Shepherd, and the most prominent trait that sets this dog apart from the classic German Shepherd dog, is that the long haired GSD does not have a double coat. The classic short haired German Shepherd, on the other hand, has a dense double coat with a wooly undercoat and a rough outer coat that is designed to help protect him from the elements. Contrairly, the long haired German Shepherd has a silky coat that grows in one layer. This coat can grow to be over two inches long, and can shed heavily. This shedding means that the long haired German Shepherd may not be the ideal dog for those who suffer from allergies. As we mentioned above, the long haired German Shepherd can often be born into a litter with short haired litter mates. In fact, this is a common occurrence. The long haired gene in German Shepherds is a recessive gene and any dog can carry it, even short haired GSDs. This means that two short haired German Shepherd parents can produce a litter of puppies with both short and long coats, and even breeders who are careful to select a specific pedigree of parent dogs to breed can wind up with long-coated German Shepherd puppies. However, because the long haired gene is a recessive gene, it means that both parent breeds must carry the long haired gene in order to pass it on to some of their pups. For many people looking for a companion dog, this is of no importance. However, if you are looking for a German Shepherd to register and show through the American Kennel Club , you will want to forgo a long haired German Shepherd and stick with a classic short haired German Shepherd bred with qualifying features. Just like the classic German Shepherd dog, the long haired German Shepherd is an intelligent, athletic, and work-oriented purebred. He hails from ancestors who were once used as intelligent and independent herding dogs, which means that the long haired German Shepherd is quite driven. That said, and like all dogs, the long haired German Shepherd requires plenty of training and socialization. Without training and socialization, the long haired German Shepherd can become anxious, destructive, and even develop serious behavioral issues. Because the long haired German Shepherd is so intelligent, he requires a hands-on owner that understands the history of working breeds. Long haired German Shepherds do best with positive reinforcement training techniques like treats and praise, which will not only help him better retain information, but also help strengthen the bond between him and his owner. Training can begrim from the moment you bring your dog home and should continue on throughout his life. Just like with routine and proper training, your long haired German Shepherd should also be socialized at an early age. This is especially true if you plan on having him around company, other dogs, children or strangers. Without proper socialization , a German Shepherd in general can become wary of strangers and be prone to behavioral issues that can lead to fear-based aggression. Be sure to socialize your long haired German Shepherd as early as possible to help him build confidence in the world around him. Get him used to being handled and played with by strangers and children, and introduce him to other dogs. As we just discussed, a long haired German Shepherd can make an incredible family dog, so long as he is properly raised and trained. German Shepherds are known to get along well with children. They are playful, affectionate and protective of their families, which makes them excellent additions to homes of anyone looking for a guard dog or a dog that looks out for their family members. Refrain from leaving young children alone with your German Shepherd, and work with age-appropriate children on how to understand basic canine body language. Just like classic German Shepherd dogs, the long haired German Shepherd is an energetic, athletic and intelligent purebred. He does best in homes with backyards where he can run and play freely, and an active owner who is able and willing to take him on long walks, hikes and adventures each and every day. The best exercise for a long haired German Shepherd is going to be any exercise that is at least an hour or two a day. It can include swimming, jogging, hiking, long walks, or free play at a dog park. Even though the long haired German Shepherd is not eligible to compete professionally based on his breed standard, he will still enjoy learning to play sports and partaking in agility courses and other activities that not only test his physical abilities but also challenge his mind. Without the proper exercise , a long haired German Shepherd can become bored, depressed, anxious and destructive. For the most part, there is very little difference between the long haired German Shepherd and the short coated German Shepherd outside of physical appearance. However, one of the biggest differences due to their different coat types is their ability to withstand certain elements. The short coated German Shepherd, with his wooly undercoat, is better equipped for outdoor play in both hot and cold weather conditions. Double coated dog breeds have a built-in insulation that keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The long haired German Shepherd, on the other hand, has only a one layered coat. For this reason, a long haired German Shepherd can be more susceptible to certain health issues like heat stroke and hypothermia. When outside during more extreme weather, be sure that your long haired German Shepherd is equipped with the tools he needs, including access to fresh, cool water, a place to get out of the sun or cold, and clothing like dog sweaters or jackets when appropriate. The opposite is actually true. Long haired German Shepherd dogs actually shed a bit more, and experts point out that owners will likely notice much more hair coming out of their coats when brushing them. This means they should be brushed two to three times a week as opposed to the one time a week for their shorter coated counterparts. You can help reduce shedding by ensuring your long haired German Shepherd is on a quality diet, as well as keeping up with routine grooming , brushing and bathing. Refrain from bathing your long haired German Shepherd more than once every few weeks. When you do bathe him, be sure to use a quality dog shampoo free of dyes, parabens, or chemicals that could strip his skin of the natural oils it produces. Oatmeal Pet Wash. Logically speaking, it makes sense. As a herding breed, shepherds have to be cognitively capable of problem solving to some extent in order to determine how to move all their wooly charges where they need to be. Unfortunately for us, most people who own German shepherds do not also own sheep! Dogs do chew while teething, but most chewing occurs because a dog is simply bored. Why Dogs Chew Our dogs all have the genetic code to hunt and kill prey, yes, even the tiny teacup Chihuahua believes he can catch that rabbit twice his size. Thousands of years of evolution does not simply disappear because we bred Sparky to be 2 lbs. Because our dogs survived by using their predatory drive to catch food, that drive still lingers to this day. To catch a rabbit, Sparky has to sniff around and find a trail, stalk his prey, chase, grab, rip apart, and chew up the pieces. Every dog has the genetic code to perform those steps, and even if they are not forced to catch their own food to survive your pet still enjoys doing those behaviors. Address the source of the behavior. If your dog is chewing or showing any other types of destruction it is important to ensure they are getting enough mental stimulation. There are a number of different chews that may help your dog alleviate some of that need to gnaw on something. Bully Sticks Our primary choice should be bully sticks given in moderation. Because bully sticks are capable of being gnawed on for extensive periods of time, and they are fully digestible so your pet can chew them up and eat them , your dog will tackle some of that basic instinct to bite. These are not intended for complete consumption, so if your dog breaks off chunks remove the antler pieces as they could present a choking hazard. Kong Toy Another type of work-to-eat toy that is mentally stimulating for dogs is the classic KONG toy, when used properly. Instead, fill your KONG with a mixture of pumpkin and peanut butter, and then freeze. Because the mixture is frozen it will take longer for your pup to eat, and when it melts the pumpkin keeps its texture without getting watery and making a mess. If we address the source of a behavior, and simultaneously provide an alternative to the undesired behavior, the likelihood of success is much greater. Lets use our teacup Chihuahua as an example again: if Sparky has stolen a dish rag and is chewing it when I get home, and I snatch it from him and spank him with it, there are a few different behaviors that could follow. Sparky could immediately aggress towards me, because I have activated his fight or flight instinct. Alternatively, Sparky could cower in fear, and my bond with him could potentially be damaged. Though he may not cower in fear for the rest of his life, Sparky may always show a fear of soft toys with a texture similar to that of the dishtowel, or may become fearful every time I am near the dishtowel while doing dishes or cooking. This is causing undue fear and punishment when Sparky has done nothing wrong. Sparky becomes accustomed to me angrily snatching away the dishtowel, and begins snarling anytime I come near him when he has a toy expecting the same results as the dishtowel. I used Sparky as an example because a 2 lb. German Shepherd. Though they have been domesticated, anything with teeth can bite, and when you are working with a large and potentially dangerous animal it is important to make sure that you are giving that animal proper feedback and avoiding creating dangerous behavior patterns. Why punish a behavior when the results will most likely create more problems and not even aid in a solution? Empathize with your dog, they are intelligent animals that need lots of mental stimulation to live an enriched life, and if we are not providing well enough for them they will seek it elsewhere. Rather than blaming your dog, ask yourself if you are doing enough to keep them satisfied. By preventing the problem from occurring in the first place, and giving them safe and effective alternatives, your pup will be on the road to success in no time. They will grow to similar sizes with the males from both varieties being larger than the females. Both dogs will require the same amount of exercise around two hours a day. Separation anxiety is an issue that is prevalent in both types of GS. They both have a protective and possessive nature — this will be particularly apparent when looking after their family. Both are susceptible to the same health conditions: hip dysplasia and heart disease. As long as you buy both from responsible breeders who use healthy dogs to breed, they should have similar lifespans. The Short Haired German Shepherd has a double coat that consists of an outer coat and an undercoat. The medium-length coat is usually covered by an undercoat, or guard coat. Other long-haired GSDs only have a long, single-layer coat, with a missing undercoat. If a German Shepherd is lacking an undercoat, it is considered defective by the AKA and will not be allowed to participate in their exhibitions. Thanks to their double coat that protects them from cold and is waterproof, the Short Haired German Shepherd is more suited to working outside and to work in general. Due to their aptitude for working, the Short Haired German Shepherd is more likely to behave in an aloof manner to strangers. The breed was refined by Captain Max Von Stephanitz to be the breed we know and love today. They are well known for their movie roles such as Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart. It was appearances like this that helped to bring the breed back into favor after the First World War. These dogs are loyal until the end. They form extremely strong bonds with their family members and would protect them with their life. This devotion sometimes leads to an aloof nature with strangers. They are highly energetic dogs and need at least two hours of exercise every day. This pup loves joining you on walks, hikes, runs, bike rides, swims and any activity really. You name it and a GSD has probably done it. As their coat has that double layer, the Short Haired German Shepherd is much more suited to being out in colder, wetter weather. Brushing them two to three times a week should help remove some of the loose hair but you are still going to find fur everywhere. During shedding season. During this time of the year, you need to brush them every day. Photos Appearance and Size This is an athletically built dog. They should stand between 22 to 26 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 50 to 90 lbs. Males are generally larger than females and have a distinctly masculine look. They have a long muzzle and ears that face forward and stand erect. Their back should be straight, the slope that we have seen develop over the past years is incredibly bad for the health of the dog. They have a double coat. The outer layer should be dense and close to the body. It is preferred to be straight but a slight wave is allowed in the breed standard. The coat colors are generally black, black and tan, red and black, sable and grey. Breeders prefer darker, richer colors and many light colorations are not accepted by the breed standard. Temperament Short Haired German Shepherds are prized for their character and temperament. They are an allrounder that are able to complete almost any task you set them. This is why they have excelled as working dogs in many fields, including the police and the military. This dog is fiercely loyal and protective — they will look out for their family and are always alert. They may be slightly too possessive at times and this can cause them to be aloof towards strangers.
