Hunting dog names Yes Poodles are traditionally retriever hunting dogs! Simplicity ensures the dog will not confuse their name for another command. This is why it is recommended that you name your dog something with two syllables. Two syllable names allow for intonation and inflection changes in your voice. These changes signal to the dog that the word you are saying is not a short and clipped command but rather an identifying word that they should respond to. There is debate in the scientific community about whether or not dogs have a sense of self and can therefore determine which words you say are meant for them. Using a name with two syllables is a good way to help your dog learn to respond to this word. You should also choose a name that is not too long so you can say it quickly. Additionally, be sure that the name is not offensive to anyone you may know. Many common poodle names are also human names. Get input from other family members. It is a good idea to decide on a name together since everyone in the household will interact with the dog. If you decide on a name and want to change it, do so quickly so that the dog can learn its name without any confusion. Many dog owners have tons of nicknames for their dogs other than their formal names. Do not be discouraged if naming your poodle takes a long time. It takes time to reach the perfect name! Are Poodles hyper? They sure love to run and exercise! Final Thoughts Naming a dog is an important job. Many factors about a dog can help you choose a name. My name's Aaron. I've been trying to find a family for a while now and I have dreams of going for a walk with a new mom or dad, and maybe playing in a yard. I love my belly rubbed and hanging out watching West Wing; I'm a man of classic tastes. I love food and I don't like sharing much but I'm willing to trade recipes. I'm an Aries, I love Gordon Ramsey, and my dream is to make beer battered cod and chips someday. I can jump fences, and everyone thinks that it is not safe to wander off so I will need a secure, 6' privacy fence. Since we are unable to do a meet and greet, we recommend Aaron be the only dog. We had a DNA test done on Aaron and found out he is .Because we care about our rescues and their future, some animals have certain new family requirements before they can be released to their new home. We will ask for a video that shows the entire fence so that we can verify that there are no holes or gaps where the dog could escape. We do not accept invisible fences. Please note, the health certificate fee is nonrefundable after the exam has been done and the transport fee is nonrefundable within 2 days of departure. Considering Aaron for adoption? Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They have it in their blood, and can successfully do police work, including searching, tracking, rescue, or guard work. If you care about your flowers and plants, you should also consider building an enclosure to keep your dog away from them. When you bring her inside, provide her with toys and games to keep her busy. The vacuum cleaner will be your new best friend German Shepherd Lab Mix is a double-coated breed, which means they have an undercoat next to the skin with longer hair over the top. Dogs from this crossbreed shed a lot, especially when the seasons change. If you want to keep her hair shiny and healthy, you should take time to brush her for at least minutes, three-to-five times a week. A consistent brushing schedule will help you reduce the amount of hair around the house. Besides brushing, you should include in your schedule: cleaning her ears once a week , brushing her teeth at least three times a week , and cleaning her eyes when needed. While this sounds like a lot, on the other hand, she only needs to take a bath about once a month. Exercising her on a concrete surface could help you keep her nails in good shape and reduce the number of visits to the vet. Always buy non-toxic toys, and substitute them with new ones as soon as they start deteriorating to avoid accidents. Your dog will need some strong toys, adapted to her age. Most hybrids tend to have a balanced personality, but as your puppy could be the result of more crosses , she may not inherit the exact characteristics you want in a dog; your future dog is prone to a series of health issues, caused by her bloodline. Obesity, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases and diabetes are a lot more common with these dogs, but she could also develop epilepsy, skin allergies, bloat or cardiovascular diseases, these being common among Labradors and German Shepherds. From my point of view, most estimations work well for average dogs. You should buy your dog from a responsible breeder In most cases, a Labrador Shepherd has high potential and is a great candidate for the title of the perfect family dog. However, as mentioned before, hybrid dogs could have unpredictable coat colors, personalities, and health issues, so buying your puppy from a reliable source is as close as you can get to a clear image about your future dog. Generally, this hybrid can be 26 inches 66 cm tall and can weigh up to 88 pounds 40 kg. Taking into account the height and weight of its German Shepherd and Labrador mix parents, this crossbreed is a medium to a large-sized dog. So measurements can still vary more or less from that range. Good news for you! It will shower you with love and loyalty, and make you proud with its intelligence and playfulness. What are the extra costs? Remember these dogs can weigh an average of 80 pounds. The average chocolate lab must be brushed at least once per week and twice when you notice they are shedding. Some breeders, however, often refuse to ship their puppies via the air and will ask to meet either halfway or have you pick up the puppies at their residence. Tips to know: If healthy, the average chocolate lab can live 10 to 13 years and are suitable for both warm and cooler climates, but most prefer to live indoors where their family lives. Similar to the other Labrador breeds, the chocolate lab is just as mellow and is known to get along will with just about anyone and anything in the neighborhood, including pets, children and other household pets. When buying from a breeder, try your hardest to see the location where the dog was raised. If they refuse or make up excuses, then this could be a big red flag since the living conditions may not be suitable for breeding dogs. How can I save money? Adoption is another option you can consider rather than buying a dog. Check out your local Humane Society or even consider a local rescue group to see if they have any dogs up for adoption. This is mostly true but only because the vast majority of labs are bred and sold by puppy mills and pet stores. However, you should also consider the fact that labs sold by reputable breeders cost quite a bit more. At the same time, you can find chocolate labs in rescues and shelters too. These places offer good prices and are very good at making their pups look irresistible not to take home. However, such puppy mills also have awful breeding standards. Inbreeding and overbreeding are pretty much the norm there. Additionally, they pay very little attention to the raising of their pups and usually just keep them in small, glass tanks for countless hours, days, and weeks. All this amounts to poorly bred and even more poorly raised unhealthy pups. This is justified by the higher breeding standard, the better healthcare, and proper raising of the lab pups. So, while the several hundred or over a thousand extra dollars can seem like a steep price hike, they also guarantee a much healthier dog and lower vet bills in the future. Chocolate Labrador Price In Shelters and Rescues Labrador retrievers are so popular nowadays that you can find them in almost every dog shelter and rescue too. You may have to look a bit more for a purebred chocolate lab but those will still be easy to find too. The only drawback of adopting a pup is that you have less of a guarantee about its health. However, this can be mitigated by most shelters as they offer a full veterinary check-up and consultation. Additionally, dogs from shelters and rescues are either free or are sold for very low prices. Black labs can cost more in reputable breeders because they are more often chosen by hunters. However, chocolate and yellow labs will still have pretty similar prices. Good breeders make sure their purebred chocolate lab puppies match a certain health standard. This means avoiding inbreeding, overbreeding, and the breeding of undesirable genetic defects. This is a big reason why puppies in pet stores and puppy mills cost significantly less. Their breeders pay much less heed, time, and attention to how they breed their pups, they invest less into the logistics of finding new dogs to breed, and so on. Additionally, they invest much less into the care and raising of their pups too. All this translates into a much lower cost for you but also a much worse health for your pup. And the latter also means much higher vet bills as your dog grows up. Steering clear from puppy mills and pet stores will help you avoid or minimize the risk of any of the following:. The costs will be a bit higher at first while you get your dog the shots it requires and pay for the frequent visits to the vet. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Once your dog is an adult, it will not require as many vet visits and will only need booster shots every few years, so the average monthly costs will be much lower. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. We recommend purchasing a high-quality brand with real meat like chicken, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. The protein in meat will help build muscle and provide the energy your dog needs to stay healthy. High protein diets will also help your dog stay full longer, and it will be less likely to come looking for food. Foods with corn as the top ingredient are mostly empty calories that will leave your pet feeling hungry and looking for more food, potentially causing it to become obese. During the shedding seasons of spring and fall, you will likely need to increase the brushing to several times a week to help keep the fur off your furniture and floor. Professional grooming can also help with teeth brushing and nail clipping. This medication can also help prevent heartworm. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. If we have helped you create a budget that allows you to get one of these amazing pets, please share this guide on how much it costs to own a Labrador Retriever on social media. Featured Image Credit: scott, Pixabay Contents. All breeds of Labrador Retrievers are known for being kind and gentle — and this trait runs especially strong with the chocolate-colored sweeties. While these dogs are very friendly to strangers, they have even more affection to give to their beloved families. Your Chocolate Lab puppy or adult will be happiest spending time with their favorite people. If you have young children, a lab is a great fit, as this breed is usually quite tolerant of the horseplay of small children who are still learning how to interact with pets. Just like many people, Chocolate Labs enjoy both downtime — especially if it involves being pampered by their family — and active high-energy fun. We recommend daily exercise, which can include anything from fetch, to tag, or even frisbee games. The average Chocolate Lab lifespan is between 9 and 11 years. The most common Chocolate Lab health problem is hip dysplasia, which occurs more commonly in older and overweight dogs. This is just one of the reasons to make exercise a common part of your time with a Chocolate Lab puppy or fully grown adult. Another problem that occurs in overweight labs is joint and movement issues. The other most common Chocolate Lab health problems are: Progressive Retinal Atrophy Cataracts Elbow Dysplasia As is the case with any dog, when you bring home a Chocolate Labrador, make sure that you have a good vet to handle routing vaccinations and check-ups as well as emergency health problems. Learn more about the Keystone Puppies Health Guarantee! Chocolate Lab Coat Care In general, Chocolate Lab coat care is easy compared to many other dog breeds which require weekly or daily work. Labrador Retrievers all have double coats, which includes an under layer of short hairs and a slightly longer top layer. This coat is useful for repelling water and keeping them cool in warmer temperatures — and warm in cooler ones. Their coat is also noted to be slightly dry and oily. Chocolate Lab coat care is fairly minimal and considered low maintenance. The coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 — 3 times per month to minimize shedding. In addition to that, baths are needed fairly infrequently. What is more crucial is ensuring that their toenails are well cared for throughout the year. Meet Chocolate Lab Puppies for Sale. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. It's time to talk about Labradoodles. This combination Labrador retriever and poodle is an excellent family dog who's often sought out by allergy sufferers because of their minimal shedding. The ever-popular Labradoodle is immensely trainable and, unlike some dogs, a good fit for first-time dog owners. On the larger side, these pups can take up some space-but are great with kids and will adapt to their family's lifestyle. The standard version, which is a Lab bred with a standard-sized poodle, can grow to be about 24 inches tall and weigh up to 75 pounds. If you're searching for a dog on the smaller size, it's possible to also find mini Labradoodles, a hybrid of a Labrador retriever and a miniature poodle. The loving, loyal doodles are a fun addition to any family. They're prone to zoomies and more than happy to play with the baby. Labradoodles are healthy dogs and need exercise, though the amount of running, playing, or swimming might depend on their makeup of Labrador and poodle genes. But regardless of the genetic breakdown, you'll need to get used to trips to the groomer. These pups are hairy. A quick note: Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles aren't the same. Australian Labradoodles are crosses between a poodle, Labrador retriever, and cocker spaniel. Appearance Like many Labradoodle characteristics, your dog's appearance will depend on the generation you're looking for. To illustrate: Martinez breeds F1 half Labrador, half poodle , F1b 75 percent poodle, 25 percent Lab , and F2 87 percent poodle, 13 percent Lab Labradoodles. The half-Lab F1s will have longer, wavier hair and will still shed, Martinez says. The F1bs and F2s will have more poodle-esque hair that's tighter, curlier, and generally won't shed. They'll often look like little teddy bears as puppies. Labradoodles are often thought of as hypoallergenic -even though no dog is truly an allergen-free animal-but generally the F1b and F2 generations are considered better options for some allergy sufferers. Martinez recommends people with allergies spend time with their puppy before they adopt. His customers are required to. They'll come in around inches tall, Martinez says. As for colors, Labradoodles run the gamut. You'll find them in black, white, cream, red, chocolate, or a mix of those colors. Taking after their poodle brethren, these fluffy boys and girls need to be brushed frequently , too. Temperament Martinez loves the dogs he breeds-he owns 10 himself-and was especially effusive about how Labradoodles act around people, families , and children , even kids who might not know exactly how to pet or interact with dogs "They love people," he says. But not only can these pups live with cats -Martinez says several of his puppies have gone on to become therapy dogs , meaning they're calm and affectionate enough to visit schools, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers to offer psychological and physiological support to patients and people in need. Some Labradoodles go on to become service dogs , as the breed creator originally intended. But don't confuse them for docile dogs. They still have big personalities-Martinez describes a typical day with his dogs as "entertaining"-but mischievous behavior can be counteracted with training , which Labradoodles quickly pick up on. Genesis Service Dogs , which breeds Labradoodles to help children and adults with special needs, says the dogs will mature slower than their Labrador retriever brethren, so they'll be puppyish for about a year and a half. Then they'll become even more affectionate toward their humans. They're mostly quiet, keeping barking to a minimum, but Labradoodles' energy level can vary based on their generation, Martinez says. The dogs with more Labrador genes F1s will be more energetic than the ones with more poodle in their blood. Labradoodles will often reflect the energy levels of their owner, Martinez says, but they're still descendants of sporting dogs who like having something to do. Whether that means long walks together or playing games in the yard, a Labradoodle will be happiest with any activity he can do with you. Living Needs Labradoodles are flexible when it comes to where they live. While the standard Labradoodles are bigger, they can still reside in an apartment, though generally Martinez admits smaller dogs, potentially miniature Labradoodles, are better suited for living in smaller homes. If you do live in an apartment or smaller home where yard space is limited, make sure you can regularly fit in enough exercise and play for your active pup to blow off some steam, like a visit to the local dog park every so often. Labradoodles certainly won't turn down a house with a big, fenced-in yard , though. Martinez lets his group of pups spend plenty of time outside, where they'll be just as likely to lay down for a spell than run around on the doggie playground equipment. They do need exercise, though. If Martinez sends a puppy home with someone who works all day, he advises them to invest in a dog walker so their doodle is able to stretch his legs during the hours he's left alone. But if you have the time and like to explore, a Labradoodle could be the perfect hiking partner. And since poodles are considered water dogs, some Labradoodles like to swim , too. This breed is good for all ages, Martinez says, but Labradoodle owners will still need to put the work in with positive reinforcement training and to meet their activity needs. He subscribes to the oft-used mantra: There aren't any bad dogs, just bad owners. Care It's important to start training your Labradoodle puppy as soon as you bring him home. Labradoodles are considered smart dogs and will pick up what you're teaching very quickly. Martinez says they may even understand some commands within the first day. Labradoodles are smart enough that daily training doesn't take too long. Martinez recommends three or four sessions of 10 minutes each day to accommodate the dogs' short attention spans, which is like that of "a young child," he says. They're so easy to train and quick to learn that even first-time dog owners can fare well, Martinez says. But if you don't have the time or know-how to train, obedience school is the answer. Once he's learned to recognize the basics, your doodle will start making those classic head tilts when you mention their favorite words walk, car, treat. According to Martinez, early socialization -both with other dogs and people-is important for Labradoodle puppies. Martinez says he lets the puppies he breeds spend their early days with his adult dogs to get them used to other dogs at a young age. If your vet says it's safe, you may want to have your new Labradoodle puppy meet other humans and dogs in their first few weeks in their new home. When it comes to exercise, three to four walks a day will suffice which is why you might need a dog walker. Otherwise, swimming, hiking, or some playtime in the yard or at the park will help your dog immensely. Labradoodles do enjoy their activity, but Martinez says they'll spend just as much time lounging around to relax. Grooming is another integral part of caring for your Labradoodle, but it's probably best to outsource it. These fluffy boys and girls need regular trims. Martinez sends his dogs to the goomer for a haircut every six weeks, regardless of whether they're F1s, F1bs, or F2s. Regular brushing is a good idea, too, because you don't want your Labradoodle's hair to get matted or uncomfortable. You'll also want to keep those ears dry and clean , and don't forget to keep up with the nail trimming and tooth brushing , either. Health Here's another reason Labradoodles are good for first-time dog owners: They're a relatively healthy breed over their years of life. But being the ideal combination of Labs and poodles also means Labradoodles can be susceptible to the health problems of both their parent breeds. Labs, for instance, will commonly suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia , so the risk is there for Labradoodles as well. Doodles can also run into problems with myopathies, diseases that damage muscles , and exercise-induced collapse. For anyone looking to adopt a Labradoodle, Martinez couldn't emphasize enough: Make sure your breeder conducts DNA tests on your puppy's parents to find any genetic abnormalities. The same goes for having their hips and elbows tested and certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. If the breeder you're considering doesn't do that testing or says it isn't needed, find someone else. Martinez notes that Labrador retrievers are happy to eat just about anything and everything. While your Labradoodle will likely be a bit pickier, be sure to keep any weight gain in check since they may have a tendency to overeat if they're allowed to. History Australian Wally Conron is credited as the modern-day creator of the Labradoodle, breeding the first one in the late s. He was trying to create a guide dog that would also be hypoallergenic, by breeding a Labrador retriever and a standard poodle. Clearly, his efforts were successful. The breed exploded in popularity, and since it is the combination of the U. People seek out the Labradoodle for its trifecta of cute looks, friendly demeanor, and minimal shedding. While the Labradoodle is the seemingly ideal dog for people with allergies, Conron has said he regrets his creation. Because of the intense demand for these "designer dogs," Conron has expressed concern over the bad actors who breed Labradoodles in puppy mills-and the inexperienced and sometimes misinformed breeders who fail to prevent genetic problems from being passed on to new generations. Labradoodles have belonged to several famous owners, including golfer Tiger Woods, actress Jennifer Aniston, and actor Henry Winkler. Doodles certainly earn their keep on Instagram, so if you need some extra fluff in your life, the Dood Squad is a good place to start. Was this page helpful? By Chris Every pet owner knows that dogs love to lick. They lick their treats, they lick their bowls, they lick themselves; they even lick you! Licking can mean a lot of things; dogs are very expressive in this way. But sometimes, consistent licking of one particular area can be cause for concern. You may have noticed your Labradoodle lick its paws a lot more recently. Is your Labradoodle licking paws constantly? Why Do Dogs Lick? Licking is fairly normal behavior for dogs. In most cases, we see our dogs licking either themselves or us. Licking to stay clean is a super common behavior for not just dogs, but pretty much all animals. Licking People Dogs are practically known for licking people — or as we like to call it, giving kisses. You probably receive a face full when you get home from work each day. Your dog may also lick you to get your attention. Some dogs lick legs as a sign of affection? As we mentioned above, dogs frequently lick themselves to stay clean. You should probably thank them for taking care of some of the work for you. Dogs who play outside can easily pick up dirt, dust, and debris on their paws. They may even get chunks of mud stuck between their toes. Grass seeds often get caught in dog paws. Signs like licking paws or lip-licking can let you know that your dog is feeling uneasy or uncomfortable with the current situation. This can happen when your dog is around new people, other dogs, or left alone. In fact, paw-licking can become something of an addiction for your anxious dog. And this constant licking can give them sores and wounds. Knowing your dog is feeling anxious can help you make better decisions to ease their worrying and calm their licking. Australian Labradoodles are a different breed the Labradoodles although similar! Skin conditions can irritate your dog, so they self-soothe by licking the area. Skin conditions like these can be a result of contact with some sort of allergen. You might also try changing up their diet. Try giving them grain-free food to see if their licking eases up. Finally, dogs can get yeast infections. A yeast infection in a dog typically starts either in their ears or on their paws, so excessive licking may be a sign of this condition. Digestive Issues While it may seem like an odd reaction to us, many dogs actually lick themselves excessively when they are experiencing digestive distress and other stomach issues. Just keep in mind that your Labradoodle licking paws could be a sign of one of these conditions. Keep an eye on its bathroom habits and contact your vet with any concerns and questions. Two Labradoodles sniff each other out at a dog park. However, constant licking of a wound can prevent it from healing. This is what we refer to as a lick granuloma. Lick granuloma, also known as canine acral lick dermatitis, is a skin injury that a dog can give itself from persistent licking. It normally happens after a dog has suffered an injury. Signs of a lick granuloma include a thickened layer of skin around a wound, raised sores, and hair loss. Your dog may also lick its paw if it has a broken nail or if its paw is in pain. If your dog is constantly licking and biting its paws, you might have a flea or tick problem. This is especially possible for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors, whether in grassy fields or dense, wooded areas. Look for other signs of fleas and ticks on your dog. If they do have these insects on them, they will likely be scratching, itching, and biting other spots on their body — not just their paws. Thankfully, there are plenty of medications and home remedies you can research to alleviate flea and tick problems. Different dogs display their boredom in a variety of ways. Some dogs whine and bark at you to try to get your attention. Other dogs might sit quietly and find something small to focus on to stimulate their mind. This may look like chewing on your favorite pillow, or it could be licking its own paws. If you spot your dog licking its paws for a long period, try offering it your attention. Doing so could be an instant solution to finding all those wet spots on your furniture. But thankfully, they do give us signs that something is amiss. We just have to stay informed so that we can recognize those signs and take action to resolve the issue. If your Labradoodle is constantly licking its paws, it could be a sign of something more serious. Your pet deserves it! My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. This does mean however, that your dog requires regular clipping to keep the coat trimmed and free of knots and matting. This is important for the dog also, as their coats can get very heavy and hot and matted coats make them very uncomfortable. It will really depend on the length you want to keep your Labradoodles coat as to how much grooming you will have to do. What do I need? Hold the skin taught to protect from any discomfort, especially where you come across a knot, or matts. Like in human hair, work knots out gently, or cut through them with scissors or a matt breaker. Knots are quite common around the ears, jaw, and collar as well as behind the tops of their legs. If they wear a harness regularly, you may find matting from this too. Trim around their eyes and across the bridge of their nose between their eyes regularly — you can do this with blunt scissors, or use a little tool like the Wahl Pocket Pro, which is a little battery operated trimmer. Over bathing can reduce the oils and damage the coat. I usually bathe my dogs every weeks. It is important to use a good quality pet shampoo — dogs have a different PH in their skin to humans, so regular shampoos is not suitable for use on your pets. Fido products are expensive, but I find them very good and this is what I use on the puppies, and my own dogs. Some vets will advocate regular plucking, others may suggest trimming the hair, but regardless, keeping the hair minimal, and the ears clean, with the use of an ear cleanser or a drying agent will reduce the risk of problems. You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. If you choose to do this, be sure to get your groomer, or your vet to show you how to trim the nails correctly. Grooming How frequently you choose to get your dog clipped will depend on lifestyle, how long you want their coat to be and, your regular maintenance regimes. Besides you want to enjoy that adorable puppy shagginess for a little while! The Puppy Trim Trim between their eyes so they can see Fringe should be cut so there is an inverted"V"above the nose. If the fringe is thick, it can be neatened with thinning scissors. Trim the ear length back to about 1 cm following the shape of the ear leather. Neaten the face, especially if the beard is long. The Full Clip Ears Trim the ears, following the edge of the ear leather. To gauge the length — pull forward to the nose. The length of the ear should be just short of the nose. Taper the tip of the ear. Hair on the outside of the ear should be layered on the to about 3cm, and the tip of the ear tapered. Trim back any thickness behind the ear. The underside of the ear should be shaved or cut very short underneath to allow good air flow. Trim hair inside the ear canal. Top of the head The top of the head should be natural, and cut long enough that it parts naturally by itself. To trim, pull the hair forward and up and trim to around cm. You want to be able to see the dogs eyes easily. Leave the eyelashes long — it helps to keep hair out of their eyes. Eyes Below the eye at the muzzle, trim the top of the muzzle short at an angle just under the eyes so they can see easily. This makes it easier to clean around the eyes also. Muzzle The beard and moustache should be layered and trimmed into a circular shape, rather than blunt - aim for around cm in length. Body the body can be trimmed to whatever length suits the lifestyle. Tail should be evened up. If the body is left long, the tummy can be trimmed shorter, or even shaved in summer to keep the dog cool. Trim the hair between the pads, so the pads touch the ground. Trim the nails. Taper the hind quarters to the tail gradually. Brush and trim the tail to a natural length, and trim underneath. Private Parts Shave or trim close the dogs private area to keep clean and free from matting and any dags. While the adult coat is establishing, you will need to brush multiple times a week, and I find this the best time to give your pet his first trim. It will be difficult to keep up with the matting in the longer coat, but with a trim, it is very manageable, and the beauty of the adult coat is better realized. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. The leg will look like a column. TAIL: The tail needs to be de-matted and trimmed. It is also important to have the hair removed, either trimmed or pulled, inside the dog's ears. Click the grooming picture for an enlarged, printable version and take it with you to your groomer! Caring for Labradoodle paws Labradoodle paws are perfect for helping your Labradoodle race through fields and clamber over obstacles! But, their paws can be delicate and prone to injuries. About Labradoodle Paws Dogs, including Labradoodles, are digitigrade animals. This means they walk on their toes and their heels do not touch the ground, unlike humans. Labradoodle paws usually have four digits toes with a claw on each. Many dogs will also have a claw and a digit slightly further up each foot, known as the dew claw. Some owners choose to get these claws removed, but this is a very controversial practice, since dew claws have a purpose. The Labradoodle originally descends from two common working breeds. Both purebred Poodles and Labrador Retrievers originally worked as retrieving dogs alongside humans. Many had to retrieve game on land and in water. So, their paws were perfectly moulded for this purpose, helping them maintain balance and speed when retrieving! Grooming Labradoodle Paws Our modern Labradoodles are less likely to have a working lifestyle than their ancestors. Most Labradoodles are kept as companion dogs. But, as an active breed, they still spend plenty of time running, climbing, and exploring. It can help to prevent split nails, injuries, and excess dirt buildups. Dog fur extends over their entire bodies, including the tops of their paws. Labradoodles often have long, curly fur that will grow between their digits and paw pads. So, whether you groom your dog at home, or take them regularly to a professional, keeping paw fur trimmed will complete the freshly groomed look. Shorter hair between the paw pads and toes can also lead to less dirt buildup from walks in muddy or snowy areas. Labradoodle nails must also be regularly trimmed. Highly active Labradoodles may adequately wear down their own nails when exercising outside, but many will need extra attention. This part of the nail contains a lot of vessels and nerves. So, when cut, it will bleed and will be painful for your Labradoodle. Socialization to Paw Grooming Grooming your dog can be a calming experience for them, as long as they are acclimated to the process. So, you should groom them from a young age, and keep the experiences positive. This can mean working in small sections, and providing plenty of treats to accompany clippers, grinders, brushes, and even touching certain parts of your dog. Including their paws. Work in small steps to ensure your Labradoodle puppy is happy with you touching every part of their paw. This includes their claws, their paw pads, and even gently separating their toes. All of these are areas that you will need to touch when grooming them. Once they are happy with this, you can introduce the tools. But, there are many reasons your Labradoodle might lick or chew at their paws. Some of the potential explanations include: Cleaning their paws. Trying to soothe an injury or irritation. Response to fleas, ticks, or other parasites. Examine the pads and digits for any injuries, dirt, or pests. If you cannot find any, your dog may simply be feeling anxious or bored. Try exercising or playing with them to prevent boredom. If licking and chewing persists, it can be a good idea to take your Labradoodle to the veterinarian. Licking an injury too much can cause further problems. Your veterinarian is the best person to help if your dog is suffering from a paw injury. Labradoodle Puppy Paws As well as paws helping our dogs and puppies to move around and soften impact from the ground, many people believe puppy paws have another key use. Mixed breed dogs like the Labradoodle can be quite unpredictable as they can inherit any mix of traits from their parents. This includes their overall size and their paw shape. Labradors tend to have narrower, more rabbit-like paws than Poodles, who often have rounded paws with long, slender toes. Labradoodle paws can be more like one of their parents, or the perfect blend of both. Female dogs are generally smaller than males when fully grown. These signs could be quite obvious, such as limping or whining when weight is placed on a certain paw. Or they could be more subtle, such as increased licking and chewing, or a lowered interest in physical activity. If you notice an injury, take your Labradoodle to the veterinarian for the best solution. Labradoodle Paws — A Summary Labradoodle paws are often all unique, as their shape and size will be determined by the genetic combination they inherit! But, all Labradoodle paws require regular grooming to stay clean and healthy. Readers Also Liked. Establish a routine that you will follow through with or you will end up with a puppy with nails that may rip or cause problems walking properly, ears that have infections, and coats that are severely matted to the skin and cause severe discomfort for your dog. These are the areas that are most prone to matting. Part the hair and brush from the base of the coat in small sections. Many people only brush the surface of the coat and do not realize the dog is matting very badly next to the skin. Remember, if you cannot maintain basic brushing and grooming on your own, then you will need to budget for using a professional groomer. You should still try to clip nails and clean ears weekly at home, and give your dog a brushing at least once a week. BATHING When you groom your puppy or dog, you will want them to have a clean coat so your scissors and clipper blades work efficiently and do not wear down more quickly. Here are some general, simple tips for basic labradoodle grooming when doing your doodle at home. Eyes: Your Labradoodle should always be able to see well and not have hair hanging and restricting vision or growing up and into the eyes from the bridge of the nose! Using blunt tipped scissors, trim the hair over the bridge of nose and in between eyes so vision is not obstructed. Hair that hangs over the eyes should be trimmed neatly across the brow blending down into the sides of the face. If your dog gets eye gunk, use eye wipes every few days to keep them clean. A Labradoodle with long ear hair does NOT look like the standard for the Labradoodle, it looks more like a Cocker spaniel. Shape the ears and blend hair neatly into the top of the head. The opposite side is giving your pup the wrong food that may lead to serious growth and digestive problems. Things to consider before choosing dog food for German Shepherds puppies 1. Their growth Puppies may need different nutrients at different stages depending on their growth rate. For instance, a puppy in the weaning stage between three to four weeks will need more antioxidants which are found in foods containing Vitamin C and E. In contrast, a teething puppy will need wet dog food which is easily digestible food on its tummy to minimize intestinal upset. For instance, a younger puppy may have difficulty eating larger food pieces than an older puppy. Teething If your dog is teething, which starts at around three weeks, you may want to consider food that contains calcium like dairy and bone broth for strong and healthy teeth. On the other hand, if the dog has teething problems, wet food may be a better option than dry food until they recover. Alternatively, you add wet canned food to their kibble to make it soft and palatable. The body weight An underweight puppy has different dietary requirements from an overweight puppy. You do not want to underfeed or overfeed your puppy. Activity Level Puppies that are extremely active require foods high in carbohydrates to keep up their energy levels. Dogs over the age of one are considered adults, except for some large and giant breeds who do not fully mature until age two. You may see variations of these nutrient profiles on dog food packaging. Step 2. Read the food label The label is the most important thing you should check when deciding which puppy food to pick. Here are the 3 things you would like to read on the packaging: a. List of ingredients The list of ingredients should have the main ingredient as the first ingredient then followed by the rest according to their percentage. For instance, in the label below the first five ingredients, are chicken as the main ingredient, ground whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, ground whole grain sorghum, corn gluten meal and dried plain beet pulp. Feeding guidelines This will show you how much food and how many times you should feed your puppy. Watch this video if you want to better understand the wording on a dog food packaging means: Step 3. Are there any claims of pups reacting to the food? Do the users recommend or warn against the food? Of course, you want to go with what the majority of the reviewers say. standard poodle puppies for sale florida - The breed is active and energetic Trainability Easy to train due to its intelligence Origin Though the Poodle is often associated with France, it is believed to have originated from Germany before finding its way to France where it became a distinct breed and family companion. It is also believed that the Poodle has many ancestors, all of whom are Waterdogs from Spain, Russia, Portuguese, French, Germany, etc. One suggests that the ancestor was the Barbet from North Africa. No one knows which theory is the most accurate so the ancestry remains unclear. What we do know is that the Poodle is an old breed, going back to Ancient Egyptian civilization. Paintings and artifacts confirm this. It is also generally accepted that the smaller Poodles were developed in the 15th century. The Miniature and Toy Poodles retained the traits and behaviors of the Standard version but with smaller sizes. Each type played different roles in places like Paris. While the Standard was used to hunt and the Miniature to sniff, the Toy Poodle was an adorable companion to many rich folks. Though it was rare after World War 2 ended, it soon rose to become one of the most popular dog breeds in the US. The only distinctive feature of the white Toy Poodle is the white color. Poodles share the same intelligence, temperament, and even coat type. The only differences are sizes and colors. Thus, what you get from other Poodles is what you should expect from the white Toy Poodle. They can read your mood These dog breeds are known to be sensitive and can detect any change of emotions. This ability adds to their good rep as a family companion. During sad days, they will snuggle up and make you feel better. This also means any harsh treatments or anger from you will affect them more than many other dog breeds. You should be careful how you interact with this breed. The hairstyle was once more than a stylish trend The trademark haircut of the White Poodle Toy and other Poodles is often considered too classy and silly by many people. To the naysayers, it makes the breed look more like show dogs and less like competent pets. Back when Poodles had roles to play, the haircut helped them cross water bodies while protecting them from the inevitable chill of many rivers and streams. It is smarter than it looks A big misconception people have about this dog breed is that it is all beauty, no brains. This is further enforced by silly jokes that make poodles be vain pets with no substance. The Poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world, and all versions have this intelligence. Its intelligence makes it easy to train as it learns with ease. The hair simply grows like ours. It needs as much exercise as a bigger poodle Due to the size and role of companion dogs, the white Toy Poodle is often seen as a breed that may not require too much exercise. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Without exercise, this little breed shows the same antsy behavior as bigger breeds. It may lead to destructive acts. What separates it from others is the striking white color. The Toy Poodle, like other Poodles, has an elegant stride and a fanciful style. The coat is dense, sometimes harsh with hair that grows in curls. The small size and white color of this Poodle give it a cute, teddy bear look. Related: Color Genetics Poodles come in many colors, both standard and otherwise. Often, this color changes as they grow older. White is the most common color, although the hair type is often classified as black because White Poodles have black noses and dark eyes. This distinguishes them from Albino Poodles. Sadly, white Poodles are prone to deafness. Deafness is often associated with dog breeds with white coloration. According to generally accepted standards, this dog breed is termed Toy when it has a height that is less than 10 inches. Any Poodle taller than that officially belongs to the Miniature category. Their weight range falls between 6 to 9 pounds. Thus, you can expect that all Poodles will act the same way. Environment and training have a big role to play, however, so it is your responsibility to make sure your pet is well mannered. That said, there is a lot to consider if you want your pooch to be in a good mental and emotional state. The white Toy Poodle is loving and affectionate, always up for a snuggle with its owner. Its sensitivity makes it attune to your mood and it acts accordingly. This breed also likes being around people and is not the type of dog breed you should leave alone. A Toy Poodle wants to be around its family and partake in its activities. It is playful as well and known for its sense of humor. These dogs can keep you entertained for a long time with their clownish attitude. Expect brighter days with this adorable pup. However, you do need to be careful if you have small children. They tend to play roughly with dogs and may mistakenly injure a dog of small size. To be safe, this dog breed is better for a family with grown children. The caution aside, white Toy Poodles make good family dogs. White Toy Poodles usually have no issues with other dogs. They can live in peace with other canines and enjoy having other poodles around. You should also be careful having them around big dogs. Because of their low prey drive , they can also coexist with cats and other pets without being a threat. Are They Easy to Train? With their intelligence and love for people, this dog breed is trainable. Even new pet parents can attempt to teach these cute pooches good manners and better behaviors. They love to please their owners and are usually cooperative. Do not neglect training this breed or spoiling it because of its size and cuteness. Without training, it can become unbearable and act as the boss of the house. Train it with the same firmness as you would a big dog, but do not be harsh on your Toy Poodle. Take it on obedience training, house training, crate training, and socialization. Related: Complete Guide To Training Your Puppy Motivations and positive reinforcements will keep your pet more interested, but do not go overboard with treats. They are some of the healthiest dogs out there and rarely fall ill unless you got one that was poorly bred. You must get your pup from a breeder who is trustworthy and can provide all needed information on the health of the pup and its parents. Their healthy reputation notwithstanding, Toy Poodles are vulnerable to some illnesses that are peculiar to this breed. Symptoms include baldness and unexpected weight gain. Deafness: White Toy Poodles are especially vulnerable to loss of hearing. While this can be a struggle for the pet when it happens, deaf dogs can live normal lives and adapt to the setback. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is characterized by seizures, some more severe than others. It may be inherited or an offshoot of another illness. It has no cure but the seizures can be managed. The former is a result of an overload of cortisol. The latter is caused by a deficiency. Eye diseases: This dog breed is susceptible to different eye diseases. Others are cataracts and glaucoma. That said, you should be firm and committed to training this breed. Also, you should be cool with a pet that loves attention. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The Earliest Records of White Toy Poodles in History Though the origin of the poodle has been debated between France and Germany, it has been well established that they most likely originated in Germany as water dogs. Their intelligence, athleticism, and obedient nature led breeders to produce smaller versions of the breed, which ultimately led to the Miniature Poodle, referred to as the toy poodle until .These smaller dogs were much easier to travel with and performed well in the circus for traveling venues. The white toy poodle that we know and love today did not exist until the 20th century when they bred the breed down even smaller. At first, many birth defects, health issues, and behavioral concerns were common in the toy poodles until more strict breeding practices were implemented. Eventually, the toy poodle was perfected into a healthy, well-rounded replica of the larger poodles. Their popularity soared even more from the s through the s when many prominent public figures openly owned and showed off their beloved poodles of all sizes. To this day, white toy poodles and many other coat colors and patterns remain a very popular companion breed thanks to their loving, devoted, and friendly nature. They are also extremely popular among allergy sufferers since they do not shed. Recognition of this popular breed was established shortly after these clubs were founded. While they may come in different sizes, each variety is held to the same breed standard. Image Credit: NicoPerez, Shutterstock 2. The Classic Poodle Haircut Serves a Purpose Rather than being a distinct fashion trend for the breed, the classic poodle cut is meant to increase functionality in the water. Fur grows to a certain point and then is shed, while hair continuously grows. Image Credit: Jagodka, Shutterstock 5. Many Designer Toy Breeds Are Created with Toy Poodles There are plenty of popular pedigreed toy breeds for small dog lovers to choose from, but designer hybrids breeds have been growing in popularity over the years to bring out the best traits of both parent breeds and fewer genetic health concerns. Toy poodles contribute to many designer breeds like the Cockapoo, Yorkipoo, Pomipoo, Schnoodle, Peekapoo, Shihpoo, and more. Granted, the toy poodles came a bit later when selective breeding took place to make a more size-friendly version of the breed. They Are High Maintenance It may come as no surprise that these elegant dogs may be a bit more on the high-maintenance side. Their unique coats require regular grooming to prevent tangles or mats. Unlike a lot of other breeds, poodles do not shed, and their hair will continue to grow, a grooming session once every 6 to 8 weeks is generally the recommendation. Smaller dogs are highly susceptible to dental disease and proper hygiene is an important preventative measure. Image Credit: Natallia Yaumenenka, Shutterstock 8. White Toy Poodles Are Incredibly Intelligent Poodles are a very intelligent breed, and you can surely expect that your tiny white toy poodle will be a smart cookie in a small package. These dogs are alert, responsive, lively, and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are very devoted to their owners and will genuinely enjoy the challenges and rewards of positive reinforcement training. Although they may not have the size of the standard poodle and were bred for companionship, they do have daily exercise requirements that need to be met. Owners should expect to set aside around 60 minutes per day for this breed to expend their energy and get in some needed physical and mental stimulation. They Can Make Great Watchdogs Toy poodles may be incredibly friendly, but they can be a bit territorial and may not come off that way with strangers. If a Toy Poodle hears anything unusual or suspects anything out of the ordinary, you can expect to be alerted. They are prone to excessive barking, so it is recommended to start training at an early age to get control. Toy poodles fit the criteria for being the ideal family dog. Unlike some other toy breeds that have less tolerance for young children, these dogs are known for being great with little ones. Of course, this is based on the individual dog, and one should always remain cautious with any dog around small children. Not only are they very loving and affectionate, but they are also small and easy to train. Their intelligence and eagerness to please were one of the reasons breeders selectively bred them into this tiny, toy size. While no dogs can technically be considered hypoallergenic, since poodles have hair as opposed to fur like most dogs, they are much more allergy-friendly and are extremely popular among dog lovers that suffer from allergies. These little tikes require a good amount of activity and mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive. They will need to get in their daily dose of activity to thrive. Something to consider is that white toy poodles are very attached to their family and do not do well when left alone. This is a breed that commonly suffers from separation anxiety. They have the potential to make wonderful pets if owners are prepared to meet their physical, mental, and higher-maintenance grooming needs. Image Credit: Jagodka, Shutterstock Conclusion The white toy poodle is one of the many coat color variations of the beloved toy poodle. The poodle breed is among the most popular dog breeds that have been around for centuries. They were selectively bred into three different recognized size varieties so that dog owners could enjoy the wonderful qualities of the breed in a size that suits them best.
