I want to subscribe to your mailing list. Submit Thanks for submitting! Doodle What? Hi everyone, thanks so much for coming to check out our website. There really aren't enough lovely things I can say about these amazing dogs. The perfect family companion for young and old and everyone in between. They are loving and funny, loyal and energetic. Most people are aware of the origins of Labradoodles, they were created with a purpose, and that purpose was to develop a breed that had the service dog capabilities of the Labrador combined with the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle. And so the Labradoodle was born. They are continuing to prove themselves as amazing assistance, therapy and service dogs but have also become a beloved companion animal for many different types of owners. Growing up on a dairy farm I have always had a passion for animals big and small. Now as an adult with a family I love to share that passion with my two boys and husband. With my breeding program I aim to produce amazing, quality puppies with good health and wonderful temperaments. Please contact me for any questions you might have. Voice does not work very well in our area. Plus the love and care at the home-away-from-home we provide our breeding girls when they come and have their pups with us. As we do not believe that our labraddodles should be kept in kennels, we are commited to remain an intimate family Labradoodle breeder. Our focus as a Labradoodle breeder in Western Australia will be to offer quality, sound, healthy dogs as genuine family companions and never compromise the wonderful qualities of the Labradoodle breed. We believe that the Australian Labradoodle will continue to develop as a very sound and genetic disease free breed. Unlike many of the breeds developed long ago that are riddled with serious genetic health issues because there was no health testing available, or the technology was not there to do the required health testing. And of course they would have to be people dogs who enjoy human interaction above all else. If you are interested in a particular combination of parent labradoodles, get in touch with us and we can discuss if your wishes are possible. Our dogs are a very big part of our life and we have great joy and pleasure from spending time with them at home and taking them on walks. We love to teach them new things and marvel at how eager they are to learn. They come to us happily and enjoy being at their home away from home place and also glad to be back with their own family once the novelty of looking after puppies has worn off! It is always such a pleasure to share the love of the girls when they come to the farm, it really enhances our lives. Check our Puppy pages to see what is in the pipeline. These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! Our Bernedoodles are from excellent bloodlines and all Pedigree information traces back to their AKC lineage. Our Dams and Sires have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. These dogs will have a higher success rate for non-shedding, and are recommended for families with allergies. F1 Bernedoodles all have loose wavy coats that are typically minimal to light shedding, while F1B Bernedoodles coats can be loose wavy just like the F1 or curly and there are both coat types within the F1B litter. The F1B Bernedoodle is typically minimal to non-shedding. The coat of a Bernedoodle can vary from straight, loose wavy or curly. An F1 Bernedoodle will have a loose wavy coat, while an F1B Bernedoodle litter has both curly and loose wavy coats within the litter. The coat colors of Bernedoodles can vary based on the color genetics of the parents. We will also have Parti Bernedoodles. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. The Bernedoodle can be independent and does great being with family engaging in play, then happily laying on their own with a toy. It is still unknown how long Bernedoodles will live as it is a newer cross. The expected lifespan is hoped to be years. As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. Look for a puppy kindergarten class locally or join the AKC S. Puppy Program , training based on positive techniques. You do not have to be an AKC purebred puppy to participate in their S. Puppy Program. Find a class here. Due to their pedigree, Bernedoodles are very affectionate , incredibly loyal, and good-natured, which are the traits they inherit from Bernese Mountain Dogs. Bernedoodle puppies are also very well-mannered, a trait common among Poodles. At least not to the level this magnificent breed deserves. Bred from Great Mastiffs and other types of guard dog breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog was brought over to Switzerland approximately 2, years ago by the Romans. Aside from being known for having a loving personality, these breeds are only one of the four kinds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. These dogs were generally known as farm dogs that worked hard. Eventually, the Bernese Mountain Dog breed mixed with the Poodle breed led to the creation of the incredible Bernedoodle dog breed. Types of Bernedoodles. Life Span Did You Know? These large, fluffy dogs are known for their non-shedding coats and lovable personalities. Bernedoodles tend to be a great addition to any family! Because Bernedoodles bond so closely with their families and enjoy nothing more than being around them, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing daily along and cleanings at the vet as needed are an ideal start to a good dental care routine for your Bernedoodle. Standard Bernedoodles can range from moderate to high energy. They tend to sit in a more moderate activity range and have bursts of higher energy when they play. These dogs are known to play hard and energetically until they are tired, but are not usually considered high-energy dogs. Daily walks plus playtime and some time to run should be enough for a Bernedoodle. But, these dogs will likely be up for more activity if you are. They will love the opportunity to spend more time being active with you. A fully-grown Standard Bernedoodle usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Standard Bernedoodles generally live for years on average. A Bernedoodle is also sometimes called a Bernese Mountain Poo. Featured Bernedoodle Article.
The simple answer is that we rescue unwanted and abandoned purebred Boxers and place them in safe, responsible, loving, forever homes. The reality encompasses so much more than the simple answer. Boxers entering TBRO are often sick or injured, some are suffering from neglect or abuse. Some come from loving families that can no longer care for them. TBRO volunteers care for each and every one of these boxers. Upon entering TBRO, each boxer is vetted and brought current on shots, and heartworm and flea prevention. When necessary, they are treated for heartworms, parasites, and other illnesses and injuries. Needless to say, our vet bills can be very high. Yes, We Rescue Boxers! History From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. Temperament One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. Environment If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Exercises Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Grooming Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Arizona? Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. She is petite in height but true to her breed traits, strong, feisty but very affectionate. She really enjoys her human companionship so she would do best in. She can be goofy and comical, mischievous, playful and sometimes stubborn but very endearing. She loves, loves, loves toys, especially when you are interacting. Because she loves toys so much and wants to be the queen of them all, we recommend no young children and she should be the only dog as she is not a fan of sharing and does not like other dogs. She was adopted out in March, but her owner who lived alone, became very sick. He described her as adorable and a great companion. Penny does have some ear issues and will likely require ongoing medication to manage this. Penny loves to laze around and although she enjoys walks, she is a home body and prefers to be indoors in her bed or cuddling on the couch. She is housetrained and good in the home. She would like a family who will provide her all the comforts of home and prefers not to be crated, but would rather curl up nicely in her own bed or cuddle up next to you. Penny is current on all shots, spayed and microchipped. Apply to adopt Penny at lovar. September 11, , am. Fatal crash closes Interstate 10 in Marana Keep scrolling for a ranking of the most popular dog breeds in America In a press release posted online, the college said: "The English Bulldog has risen sharply in popularity in the UK over the past decade. However, its distinctive and exaggerated short muzzle, protruding lower jaw and stocky body shape has been linked with several serious health and welfare issues, including breathing problems, skin and ear diseases and eye disorders. Here are five dog breeds that prefer to spend their time napping rather than running around outside. English bulldogs like to stay inside because they can overheat easily if they are out in the sun. They are also extremely friendly, loving, and low maintenance. Chow Chows are so lazy that their behavior is often compared to that of a cat. They are also very independent dogs, so they will not mind when you leave for work in the morning. Shih Tzus are often happy to just wander around the house and only need to be let outside for an occasional bathroom break. Cavalier King Charles spaniels were originally bred to sit on the laps of royalty. This dog breed likes to spend its time relaxing and being adored by its owners. Boston terriers are great dogs for people who live in apartments or small spaces. They only need one short walk every day to keep them fit and healthy The RVC's VetCompass program compared the health of random samples of 2, English bulldogs and 22, dogs of other breeds. It found the bulldogs were more than twice as likely to have one or more disorders in a single year than other breeds. Some of the most common health problems included skin-fold dermatitis, cherry eye a prolapsed eyelid gland , protruding lower jaw, and brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome severe breathing problems related to a dog's flat face shape , which was 19 times more common than in other dog breeds. The bulldog was developed centuries ago in England for use in fighting bulls. Characteristically powerful and often vicious, the breed almost disappeared when dog-fighting was outlawed in .However, enthusiasts saved it by breeding out its ferocity. The vets argue that the public should embrace the breed's more natural look, saying: "In the future, the English Bulldog should become recognised and loved for having a longer face, smaller head and non-wrinkled skin, representing a more moderate and healthier conformation. Until then, prospective owners should 'stop and think before buying a flat-faced dog'. Bill Lambert, health, welfare and breeder services executive at the Kennel Club, said in the statement: "As this research shows, there are increasing numbers of Bulldogs bred outside any sphere of influence and in a certain way because it is perceived to be 'cute', with little regard for health and welfare. A collaborative approach to tackling these issues is crucial; we must continue to work together with breeders, vets and welfare organisations to reduce and ultimately eliminate the health problems faced by brachycephalic flat-faced breeds, as well as reduce mass demand for these dogs. The AKC only analyzes data dealing with purebred, registered breeds, so sadly, your sweet mixed-breed pal isn't counted in the final tally. Still, the list includes a great variety of dogs, from tiny lap dogs and mighty hunters to prime show dogs and companions for royalty. The sheer amount of breeds that are ranked is a reminder of the diverse taste of dog owners in America, and the many different types of pups that we love. Several obvious factors create a breed's national popularity year in and year out: ideal size, maintenance, hypoallergenic coats, disposition, temperament, and of course name recognition. If you are owning your first dog for companionship in a city apartment, easy choices are reliable, compact French bulldogs or Boston terriers. Choosing the first family dog for small children and ample backyard space make retrievers or labradors a traditional option. What to Consider Before Owning a Dog According to the mental health publication HelpGuide, playing with a dog can elevate serotonin and dopamine levels. But taking care of dogs, particularly the younger ones, can also be physically taxing and financially demanding. With that, you need to be emotionally and financially prepared before you take home a pooch. Here are some things you need to consider before getting a dog. Apart from paying the puppy price in the Philippines, can you pay for everything your dog will need, from food to medicine and veterinary care? Remember that these are not just one-time expenses. If you live in a condo or a small apartment, does your landlord allow dogs? Is there a fenced yard where they can play off-leash, or is there enough indoor space for your dog to roam around safely? If you live in a house with stairs or a balcony, or on a busy street with no gate, consider these danger zones. Think about how you can put up safety measures for your dog and make your home as pet-friendly as possible. Moreover, you must also prepare for your personal space to be invaded once you have a dog. No matter how much you clean your house or train your dog, there will always be a mess when there are dogs around. You feed and groom them. You potty-train them, clean after them, take them out for walks and playtime, and bring them to the vet for their check-ups. In short, dogs will take up a lot of your time and energy. You may have to sacrifice your me time or hobbies for cuddles, walks, training, and playtime with your dog. If you live with a roommate, a significant other, or family members, they must also be on board with your plans to be a fur parent. Its distinctive underbite creates its homely appeal. This breed also charms its owners with its affectionate and friendly demeanor. The life expectancy of a Shih Tzu is 10 to 18 years, so you can enjoy many happy years loving and taking care of it. Training is needed, especially at a young age, to help them manage their territorial tendencies. Golden Retrievers are commonly described as friendly, intelligent, and confident. Aggression is rarely observed in them, and they have a very gentle disposition. Owing to their mild and friendly personality, Golden Retrievers make great emotional support dogs and guides for the blind. The American Kennel Club describes them as kind, active, and outgoing. Back then, these dogs were used for hunting, detection, and tracking. These days, they function as therapy dogs and guides for the disabled. While pleasant and friendly, these dogs bark a lot. They could use some training here. Usually bred for companionship, Bichons are playful yet gentle dogs that get along well with kids and other pets. This makes a Bichon Frise a lovely addition to a family with children. They love cuddles and lots of playtimes since they have an athletic disposition. You can say that Beagles are people pleasers because they love making friends with strangers. Yes, this breed is sociable and natural people pleasers. When you have one, expect that it will demand your undivided attention. However, Poms can be quite willful, dominant, and stubborn. You can curb such dispositions by giving your pet training early on. While it undergoes training, you may witness how intelligent your Pom can be, as it responds well to commands and cues. A Dachshund is your best bet! Dachshunds make excellent watchdogs and loyal companions at home. Well-trained dogs of this breed are also good with kids. The Dachshund is one of the cheapest dog breeds in the Philippines. Chihuahuas prove that. While affectionate, they tend to be very protective of their owners. They may bark at strangers or anyone who comes near their owners. However, their aggression can be dealt with through early training. Note: The prices above are just estimates. Many dogs in shelters and rescue facilities are waiting for their forever homes. Abandoned aspins and other pups also deserve the same kind of love and attention that purebreds receive. Dog Adoption Tips But before you proceed with the adoption, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. Was it a stray dog, or did its previous owners surrender it? Was it abused? Check Its Health This should be easy, as reputable shelters and rescue organizations maintain updated records of their dogs. They also have veterinary partners to ensure the pups are in good shape. Before you leave the shelter, ask if the dog has received obedience training. The cheapest dog is the one you adopt from a friend or neighbor. However, if you adopt from a dog shelter or rescue organization, it may impose some fees for the adoption process. Good thing the fee already covers the following costs of owning a dog:[4] Updated vaccination Treatment for ticks and fleas Spaying or neutering What is the Cost of Owning a Dog in the Philippines? It takes a village to raise a dog. As mentioned, having one under your care is akin to raising a child. You feed them, get them their shots, and shower them with love and attention. To help you with your budget, take note of the following costs. You may be tempted to feed your pup human food such as leftovers. But remember that your food contains ingredients that may be harmful to animals. Your food and treat expenses will depend on your pet's size. For instance, if you have a small dog such as a Pomeranian, a 20kg sack may last up to two months, especially if you properly portion the servings. You can get cheap ropes and squeaky toys online. But do your due diligence first and check if the toy has choking hazards or components potentially dangerous to your pup. You may get your pup a cozy bed. Prices will depend on the size of your dog. Avoid losing your pup by getting it high-quality collars and leashes. The prices of dog hygiene supplies like tear stain wipes, towels, blankets, and pet spray also vary depending on the brand. Dogs also need vitamins and supplements to stay healthy and to keep their coats looking good. You can also buy a Dog GPS Tracker for peace of mind, especially if you have a dog who loves to roam around the neighborhood. If you have a Chow Chow, a poodle, or a Siberian Husky, expect to pay a higher grooming fee. So prepare to add a few hundred pesos for a home grooming session. Other than that, the veterinarian may also recommend some examinations, such as Parvo and heartworm tests. Blood tests, skin scraping, deworming, fecalysis, and a urinalysis may also be required. It can also help reduce undesirable behaviors, like aggressiveness or marking, usually brought on by their heat cycles. Also, the insurance premium is affordable. Some insurance coverage for dogs may also include cash assistance and burial assistance. The 5-in-vaccine protects dogs from canine distemper virus, two types of adenovirus, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. If you want to save money on this vaccine, check with your barangay or local government to see if it offers free pet vaccination services. The cost of medical emergencies varies depending on the procedures and medicines needed. My husband and I are dog lovers and wanted our child to be the same. Besides, kids exposed early to dogs are known to grow up as more responsible individuals. Who wouldn't want that? Getting a New Dog I was 3 months pregnant when we decided to get a new dog for our child. My husband's 1st choice was a Great Dane. But when we did our research , we discovered that this breed's average life span is only 7 years. That was only half of the life span of other breeds and we're scared of the potential untimely heartbreak. The next breed that we considered was my dream dog - a Newfoundland. It's known to be the friendliest dog breed , and is reported to be perfect for families with young children. Unfortunately, getting one would cost us Php 80, to Php , Although we can afford it, the price is ridiculous no offense meant! Getting a Newfoundland is still on my bucket list, but not now. We did more extensive research, and that's when we realized that a golden retriever would fit our lifestyle and goals. We considered everything - from our budget to our daily routines. Indeed, a golden retriever would be a perfect companion for our child. Meeting Mhershey for the First Time On July 9, , our veterinarian friend called to inform us that he knew a reliable dog breeder with a golden retriever puppy. We immediately called the breeder, and that same night, we went to his house to see his last puppy. When we got there, we were immediately impressed with the kennel's condition - it's spotless and organized. It didn't have that kind of smell most of you would probably imagine when talking about "dog kennels. They were all placed in a sizeable adjustable tent with an air conditioner. There were also three adult golden retrievers. One of them was the puppy's sire. His name is Parker - a very handsome golden retriever who's obviously a conformation type. Actually, we can tell that all the adult goldens in that kennel are perfect for conformation shows, judging by their appearances and how they were taken care of. Then we finally saw the golden retriever puppy. I immediately noticed her snout was longer than a usual GR pup, but we no longer cared. We instantly fell in love with her! There was this "sudden positive connection" when she looked at us. Her coat was close to white, a much lighter shade compared to many golden retrievers we see in magazines and on television. They call it " English Cream , " which is uncommon in the Philippines. But during that time, we didn't know this yet. The affection we felt for that puppy was pure. From the moment we saw her, we already knew she was the one. We never had the chance to name her. After asking the breeder questions about her dam he doesn't own the pup's mother , we already settled everything because we're excited to take her home. Inside the car, she was quietly sitting on my lap, and her head was resting on my 3-month pregnant tummy. This "car habit" continued until my growing tummy and her body could no longer fit on the passenger seat. Mhershey used to sleep between me and my husband until she got bigger. Mhershey and her first toy - a stuffed golden retriever puppy Princess, the hairless Shih-Tzu, and Mhershey, the 3-month-old golden retriever - their first and last photo together Because Mhershey doesn't like rough floors. I bet she was listening to her baby bro. We started her dog training at 3 months to prepare her for the baby. She's the sweetest and most intelligent dog we ever had. She became not only our son's best buddy but also his big sister and most reliable babysitter. Mhershey and our son's first photo Mhershey guarding her baby brother at a park Partners in Crime: Mhershey and her baby bro checking out a vacant room Baby bro trying to wake up Mhershey Baby bro suddenly approached Mhershey, who was about to be groomed by Daddy. He thought his dad was about to do something "bad" to his sister. She has already won many contests and made her name known to a few significant people in the field. One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog.

Emily has been a proofreader and editor at a variety of online media outlets over the past decade and has reviewed more than articles for The Spruce Pets for factual accuracy. These smart, social dogs are known for their amiable temperaments and their patience. Traditionally bred as hunting dogs, Labs also are among the most popular service dogs, acting as guide dogs for blind people and as therapy dogs. By socializing these dogs early, you can tap into their natural instincts as protectors and companions. Socialize Puppies Labs are natural born people pleasers. Introduce your Lab puppy to as many new people and places as possible during the early months of its life. Keep each new meeting and experience positive and upbeat. Doing this will reinforce your Lab's natural tendency to be friendly and accepting of everyone. If you have young children in the home, be sure to socialize them to the animal as well as the reverse. Although Labs are patient and tolerant, they may still nip at a child who teases or hurts them during play. Make sure everyone knows the boundaries and rules. Exercise Every Day Labrador retrievers are high energy dogs, which is part of the reason they are such great pets for active families. But if Labs aren't given sufficient exercise, they can quickly become bored. This often leads to destructive behavior and other common behavior problems , such as barking, chewing, and digging. It's also why Labs are not well-suited for apartment living; they're too big and too active. Plan on giving your Lab an hour or more of exercise each day. Most Labs love long walks or a game of fetch. These are the perfect way to burn off your Lab's energy. Take advantage of their innate trainability by starting an obedience program as soon as you bring your Labrador retriever home. You can work on basic obedience commands on your own, or sign up for a dog obedience class with a local dog trainer. Classes are a great way to train your Lab while socializing at the same time. Since Labs get to be fairly large and have a tendency to pull on the leash, make walking on a loose leash your first priority. You should also teach your Lab to "come," "drop it," and "fetch," so you can take advantage of its natural tendency for retrieving. Use Positive Reinforcement Training Their eagerness to learn, playfulness, affectionate natures, and their love of treats make Labrador retrievers fantastic candidates for positive reinforcement dog training. Reward their good behaviors with a small treat, a game, or some cuddle time with you. You'll find your Lab is soon offering you the behaviors you like with little prompting. If you decide to use treats in your training, remember that Labs have a tendency to become overweight. Plan on a Long Adolescence One of the most endearing qualities of Labrador retrievers is that they remain very puppy-like long after they've reached adulthood. The downside is that their energy level and tendency to get into mischief continues well into adulthood as well. Therefore, it pays to have behavior management tools handy. The training to become a service animal will vary depending on what the dog will be doing; some are trained to be animal companions to sick children and adults in the hospital, while others are trained to serve as seeing-eye dogs. Others may provide assistance to people with mental illnesses, or behavioral problems. Check the requirements for licensing and training where you live; some places have more strict rules and requirements for service dogs than others. Problems and Proofing Behavior Many Labrador retrievers are happiest and the most well-behaved when they have a job to do. Consider getting involved with a dog sport or training your Lab as a service animal or pet therapy dog. Crate train your Labrador so it doesn't have the run of the house when you're not there to supervise Provide your Lab with a variety of interesting toys and chews to keep it from getting bored. Continue practicing basic obedience commands; it reinforces your Lab's training and provides mental stimulation. No matter what training you decide on, keeping your Lab busy and active is sure to keep one of those famous Lab smiles on its face. Labrador retrievers under primary veterinary care in the UK: demography, mortality and disorders. Canine genetics and epidemiology vol. How does it feel to be a new puppy parent? You must be chuffed. Take a look at these first few articles. All the ingredients you need for a happy home. But for now, beside your bed is the best place for your puppy to sleep — it will help them feel safe. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the bathroom at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialization Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the yard Besides the gnomes and questionable yard furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own yard is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and yard to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favorite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. Print Early obedience first step to better hunting dog Labrador puppies start out sweet and innocent. All you want to do is cuddle up with your pup and love them! And you should! But rest assured the innocence will not last. As your pup gains confidence and courage, they will begin to test you in many ways. That is why you must obedience train your Labrador puppy. Early obedience training is key to establishing borders and boundaries that will help your puppy grow, learn, and adjust with a good attitude. There is no shortcut to doing this, just use the name often when you talk to your puppy. Over time, the pup will start to respond to the name. Socialization, while not technically obedience training, is the single most important thing you can teach your puppy during the first few months of life. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to this post. Tools needed to obedience train Labrador puppy You will need a few tools to teach your puppy obedience. The products I recommend I believe are a good value or good investment for anyone working to train or maintain training on their retriever. When possible, I include links to the product. Some of these links may be Amazon or other affiliate links in which I am paid a small commission at no cost to you. All opinions and recommendations are my own. Collar — You should purchase a size appropriate collar for your new puppy. You may have to buy new ones as your dog grows, but it is important for your puppy to get used to wearing a collar early on. A simple nylon adjustable collar works great. Chain collar — If your puppy is more than a few months old, a chain or prong collar is extremely helpful in teaching obedience, but they must be used correctly. For more information on how to put a chain collar on your dog correctly refer to this video. A longer lead, called a check cord, is also useful for teaching HERE and retrieving. You can learn more about that here. Heeling stick optional — While optional, a heeling stick can be especially helpful in teaching basic obedience. Treats — Treats are good for teaching very young puppies. I use treats for pups under 12 weeks of age, but treats should be discontinued rather quickly. When to start basic puppy obedience training Obedience training can and should start within the first couple weeks of having your puppy home. Young puppies are ready and willing to learn and teaching obedience to a young puppy is much easier than teaching it to an older dog. How long should obedience sessions be? Most labs do not enjoy obedience training. For this reason, we aim to keep obedience sessions short, especially if your dog is under 4-months of age. Five to ten minutes of obedience a day can work wonders. Especially if you are consistent. Using rewards or praise to teach obedience Many people like to use treats or rewards for obedience training. And this can work, especially with very young dogs. But for hunting dogs, over the long-term treats can become a problem. We do not want our dogs, or the dogs we train to be obedient only because they are getting a food reward. We want them to be obedient because they understand their place in the family and respect the owners. To get these lasting results, we use praise words and petting and a reward that retrievers live for — retrieves! Well-timed praise is a particularly important part of dog training. A message that it is okay to ignore me the first 9 times! This simply means that after a few minutes of formal obedience training, we release the dog with an OKAY command and that means they can run around and be a dog. We then throw a bumper or plug a for the dog to retriever. We do this a few times with a lot of excitement and allow the dog to retrieve the bumper. For retriever breeds, this is often more effective than a food reward. Be careful that you are not letting your puppy get into bad habits with retrieving. For instance, if your puppy often goes out to retrieve the bumper but then runs away with it, or picks it up and drops it, do not continue doing retrieves. While retrieving is a reward for many Labs, it is not an excuse to engage in behaviors that are not going to be acceptable in the field. If you want to learn more about how to properly teach your Lab to retrieve, check out How can I teach my retriever puppy to fetch? Introduction to leash and nylon collar The very first step for any puppy obedience is to introduce your puppy to a regular collar and leash. This should be done in two separate steps, first the collar and then the leash. Introduce the collar by putting a nylon type collar on your puppy. This is normal and you should not react to it. Introducing the leash is a little different. We like to do this outside. After a few sessions of this introduction, you can start holding the leash by the end and walking with the puppy. When the puppy tries to run or walk away, hold tight to the leash, and just let the puppy get used to the resistance. Some puppies have a hard time with this and will growl or whine and whip themselves around at the pressure, but most will not. Remain calm and after a few sessions the puppy should get used to the resistance of the leash. Do not allow the puppy to pull you around. That will make for some bad behaviors that you will need to correct later. If you cannot control your puppy with just a regular collar and leash, you may need to move to a chain or prong collar to keep control. What commands to teach Lab puppy There are only four basic obedience commands that you need to teach your young puppy. Remember when it comes to commands, less is more. OKAY — this is a release command, basically tells your dog were done training, go be a dog. As your puppy grows and learns more, there are some other commands that may be needed, but for puppies I like to start with just the four above. Dog training requires consistency Before you start with obedience training, I want to make a note about the importance of consistency. Obedience training only works if you are consistent. This means that when you say a command, you expect the puppy to perform the command, and are willing to take steps to make the puppy perform the command. If you do not remain consistent in this expectation, you will confuse your dog and get poor results from your training. You and your family must be consistent! How to start obedience training Lab puppy The first command you want to start teaching your puppy is SIT. This is quite easy to teach with a small puppy but gets a little tougher as they get bigger. Then release the puppy with the OKAY command. Repeat this process several times, then stop. If your puppy is weeks old, you can repeat this training several times a day for only a couple minutes at a time. This will be a two-person job for a little while. The other person will put the food down a few feet from the puppy. Then release the puppy to eat saying OKAY. As the pup learns and understands the command better, you will no longer need a second person to hold the puppy. You must be a little careful here because young puppies do not have great bladder control and making them wait, even a few seconds, can mean the difference between an accident and them doing their business outside. But this is a great way to teach impulse control and manners to your puppy. I do not want to have to fight for a position by the door. You can usually start working on this within a week or two of teaching SIT. A great way to teach this command to young puppies is to use two people and sit in a long hallway, one at each end. Take turns calling your puppy with a HERE command. A toy or treat can often help the process. Let your puppy run around a bit but hold onto the end of the cord. Occasionally, call you puppy with a HERE command. It can be helpful at first to crouch down to encourage the puppy to run towards you. Then release the puppy with an OKAY command. Do this a few more times and repeat daily until the puppy is coming to you without you needing to pull the cord. It is also the command most of our clients struggle with the most. Mostly because they are using the wrong tool for the job. For heeling work, it is important that you work with a chain or prong collar. This will give you more control and stop the pulling and surging that many people struggle with. Using a chain or prong collar and a six-foot leash, start walking your puppy at your side. If your puppy is young, be sure to use a puppy chain collar which is smaller than chain collars for adult dogs. And make sure that you are putting it on correctly! An alternate tool to a chain collar and leash is the Wonder or Command Lead. These work great for teaching HEEL. As you start walking use gently tugs on the chain collar with the command HERE to keep your puppy at your side. If your puppy surges or pulls ahead, simply make a degree turn and start walking the other direction giving a sharp, upward tug on the chain collar and saying HEEL several times until the dog is back in a heeling position. Many of our clients have told us they never left their driveway the first few days! But if you are patient and consistent, your dog will quickly learn that if they want to go for a walk, they need to stay at your side. If you want to learn and progress in more obedience work, check out these obedience drills for retrievers. Final thoughts on how to teach your lab puppy obedience Teaching your puppy obedience may take a lot of patience, time and work, but it is such an important thing to do. You will never regret the time! A well-mannered dog is such a joy to be around both in the home and in the field. How to obedience train Labrador puppy. Tweet on Twitter Do you teach your Labrador tricks? Do you love to see well trained Labradors enjoying displaying their skills? Or do you feel uncomfortable watching their performance? In this article we are going to look at whether teaching your Labrador tricks is a good idea. And what good things teaching tricks can do for you and your dog. What Are Labrador Tricks? So teaching a dog to sit is an obedience training lesson, but teaching him to shake hands or dance in a circle is referred to as a trick. So why do we teach them, and why do some people object? Some people look down their noses at those that teach their dogs tricks. I know because I used to be one of them. I used to think it undignified and pointless teaching dogs to copy their humans with a handshake, or to roll around on their backs. But the idea of embarassment is a very human one, and dogs actually enjoy learning tricks if they are taught in the right way. More than this though, I now understand that there is huge value to be had in teaching your Labrador to carry out a specific behavior in response to a specific cue. Why Teach Labrador Tricks? There is nothing pointless in training a dog to respond to a human being. The point is, your Lab is learning something new, and so are you. Every time we train a new skill, we get better at it. Lab tricks improve your ability to train your dog. And every time your dog learns a new trick or game, he is using his brain. Not to mention strengthening the relationship between you. Labrador Tricks Training When we train a Labrador to do tricks, we use positive reinforcement training. This method of training enables us to teach our dogs something new, safe in the knowledge that they will enjoy the learning process and strengthen their bond with us in the process. Clicker training is great for teaching tricks. It provides the dog with a stream of feedback which identifies for him when he is getting it right. A clicker is a little box which makes a clicking sound. It comes under the category of an event marker — because it literally marks the event you are looking for. Giving your dog a clear sign of when he has got it right. When you combine this noise with something your dog finds rewarding, like a tasty snack, then you increase the likelihood of him doing it again. Capturing Labrador Tricks Capturing Labrador Tricks is a method which can be used for basic tricks or those that your Lab already does by himself. You simply wait for him to do the behavior you want, then click and treat. Capturing the correct moment and making it even more rewarding for him. For example, some Labradors like to spin around in circles. If you want to turn this into a trick, you can mark and reward when your Labrador does a rotation. Doing a click and treat when he completes a single spin. This will encourage him to do it more often. Say this word every single time to build up an association. After a few sessions, try saying spin when you have his full attention. If he spins click and give a high value reward. Make sure to click and treat for the behavior when it is offered without the word too, to encourage him along the way. After a time your cue word will become a command, which you can say and he will respond to. But remember, keep rewarding your dog for most of his obedient responses to keep him encouraged and the game fun. Luring Labrador Tricks Luring Labrador tricks involves using a lure, usually some food, to guide your Labrador into the desired position before rewarding him. Luring behaviors can be a little tricky to learn, to make sure that you get the method and timing right. You can use the lure to teach your Labrador to sit, and find detailed instructions for how to do that here. Shaping Labrador Tricks Shaping your Lab tricks is the most common way of building up complicated tricks. We look at shaping in detail and give you instructions for how to use this skill in our clicker training heel for dogs and puppies article here. You can find out lots more about how to use all of these different skills to train your Labrador tricks in our dog training techniques article here. Fun Labrador Tricks Anything which your Labrador learns to do can be called a trick. There are a lot of Labrador training tricks you might enjoy, and here are some of our favourites: things to do with a box Here is a fun game to play with a dog on a rainy afternoon. Its called things to do with a box. And whilst it might seem trivial, this game is a brilliant training tool and great practice for the beginner clicker trainer. Any of which can be described as Lab tricks, but all of which are fun learning and bonding opportunities for you and your dog. What Tricks Can Labradors Learn? Labradors can learn to do pretty much anything which is within their physical capabilities. The sky is the limit. And even if the trick you are training seems pointless, stay happy in the knowledge that everything you teach your dog will be making you a better trainer, owner and companion for him. Have a go at training your labrador to do some tricks. You may be surprised at how much fun you have. Teach your dog to spin, shake hands, or anything else that appeals to you. Labrador Retriever pups are working dogs. This means they live to please you for a treat. The more you engage them with different puppy training behaviors the happier they will be. The answer to that is definitely maybe! Not all purebreds are bred for intelligence. For example, if a Labrador Retriever breeder chooses to breed their dogs for a certain look then they may overlook intelligence as one of the important characteristics in order to get a specific Lab look. We however breed for intelligence, health and temperament. So in our case, yes, our Purebred Lab Puppies are easier to train than many because we choose the parents and their puppies specifically for their smarts!

The Trustees are volunteers who are dedicated to the welfare of the Labrador Retriever and cover all of Scotland and the North of England. The Rescues mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Labrador retrievers and promote and advance responsible pet ownership. The Rescue also prevents rehoming by providing training and support to owners. For many years the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular breed of dog in the UK. Because of this, there is an ever increasing number of Labradors who need homes. The Labrador Retriever is a loving, loyal dog who makes a wonderful pet. Many people purchase Labradors not realising their daily needs for exercise and human interaction. As an Organisation we believe that match making each individual Labrador to the perfect owner is of the utmost importance. Whenever possible the Labradors are rehomed straight from their existing home to the new home as this is less traumatic for the Labrador. The majority of Labradors we rehome are much loved and only a sad change in circumstances or a crisis has caused the rehoming. There are of course some welfare cases and sometimes the Rescue has to remove a Labrador from an abusive situation. We also work with Government agencies and other non profit organisations to assist them in finding Labradors who would be happier in service or a working dog environment. The Rescue must have a solid relationship with these organisations and know the training methods used and retirement plans for the dogs before we will assist them in finding specialised dogs. We have placed Labrador Retrievers who have gone on to become Narcotics dogs, Cadaver dogs, Explosive dogs, Search and Rescue dogs and Assistance dogs. Our preference is to place Labradors in companion homes but in some cases, some Labradors are actually happier working. We are not judgemental and understand that families who have provided loving homes for their Labrador sometimes have to give them up through no fault of their own, and could never have predicted being in this situation. Jim T. The whelping box features a sliding door and puppy rails that are fully suspended from the floor to maximize floor space and ease in cleaning. Also included is a full solid floor for both the whelping box and weaning pen to keep your carpet and hard floors clean. Puppies are able to exit the whelping box and enter the weaning pen area to play, eat, and most importantly, poop. Your puppies will naturally develop better strength, health, and potty skills by using the weaning pen. This arrangement simulates the natural puppy den where they are able to have the space to sleep in, a porthole area, and a new safe area to explore. This gives your litter the additional space they want and need for: Eating, Playing, and Pooping. Many breeders have wanted the half door to use with the weaning pen and whelping box so we decided to include it in this combo. The weaning pen is the same size as the whelping box. Box walls come as a single completed unit eliminating slots, cracks or crevices where feces and urine could accumulate. Assembly simply requires 4 screws screws included with every box and a screwdriver. Assembly can be done in under ten minutes. The Weaning Pen is the same size as the whelping box and includes a set of walls as a complete unit and a floor. Patent No. It is very important to get the correct size of box for your breed. The size of the box determines the height of the puppy rails which are tailored to protect your puppies from getting pushed up against the sides of the box. Frequently purchased with this item:. Get Free Downloads! A whelping box should be in a room that is fairly quiet, climate controlled and has a door that can be closed. Animals should be kept away unless mom shows no signs of stress by their presence and they are past their two week quarantine and are are healthy. To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, you will need to be able to sanitize the floors and, possibly, the walls with either high heat or chemicals. A room with carpeting may not be a good option. How to Interact with Mom and Puppies in the Whelping Box For the first few days after the puppies are born, keep things pretty calm and only familiar people should visit. Shoes should be removed before entering the room. I use a pair of Crocs as my puppy-safe shoes because they slip on easily and can be disinfected with bleach. Once the puppies are days old and showing no signs of illness, strangers from all walks of life should be invited to handle the puppies Read about Neonatal Handling. Dura-Whelp is made of corrugated plastic which makes it light, fairly inexpensive and easy to fold up and store. Plus, if you need to contain a medium to large breed mom, you would still have to add a wire pen around the box. Although Dura-Whelp is less expensive than some of the others, it is still a bit of an investment for something that is only useful for a few weeks. View fullsize Dura-Whelp whelping box with weaning pen extension View fullsize Prototype of fence rail frame and EPDM waterproof pond liner flooring Next we tried to build our own. I wanted something modular that could easily grow with the puppies and also contain mom. I also needed a way to keep the puppies from pushing the pen all over the place. I used horse fence rails attached by metal brackets around the pen and also as the bumper rail and I tried EPDM pond liner for the durable, waterproof flooring. Overall, this design worked pretty well except that the frame was a bit heavy and the pond liner flooring did not work because poop stuck to it like cement. Plus, the 6 inch tall bumper rail was not high enough to contain the puppies for more than 13 days not sure their eyes were even open when they started escaping! I made a bumper rail with PVC pipe which I zip tied to the wire pen. Then I used linoleum for the floor which I clipped to the pen with A-clamps. View fullsize This was one of our ideas for a whelping box and weaning pen. It worked ok but there were a few challenges But I discovered a few problems with this design. First, my most obvious mistake was that, under the bumper rail, there was just the wire pen no barrier and newborn puppies are small enough to easily fit through the spaces in the bars. This worked really well. Another problem is that when Mom leaned against the PVC bumper rail, the pieces would come apart. Unless you are careful to keep it clean during the whelping process, you will probably need a second, clean box for the weeks the puppies will live there. Baby pools are handy, relatively cheap options. It is important to add the bumper rails to prevent mom from accidentally suffocating or injuring her puppies. This is another style of bumper rail for a baby pool whelping box. NOTE: If pieces of the foam noodle come loose, they could be a choking hazard. For this size dog, this pool might be a little small but it seems to work. One problem with baby pools is trying to keep blankets in place so this is a clever homemade solution. This is a very simple, down and dirty design. This box appears to be painted wood. What is clever about this one is that it looks like the corner brackets are removable making this easy to assemble and disassemble. Yes, you could choose to use a kiddie wading pool for whelping, or you could also build a basic wooden box. Both of these will hold the pups while they are small, still dragging themselves around on their bellies, but there are so very many other things to consider in order to safely contain the bitch and her puppies, that I would be doing you a huge disfavor if I were to say that a basic box or kiddie pool were all you needed. Whelping box with puppy rails and fleece pads for bedding. Thanks to Debbie Bjerkestrand for sharing her photos with us! The best thing, will be for you to design your whelping box to fit your bitch and your available space, while designing your entire set up so that it will also to fit the growing and changing needs of the litter and dam over the next couple of months. Whelping Box Dimensions — ideally the box should be at least a foot longer than the bitch is long when measured from nose to rear. A box that is too large could mean the newborn puppies might get lost, unable to find their way to mom; and a box built to small increases the odds of the bitch lying or stepping on a wee one. Side Height — the height of the side wall is most effective when it is designed to be adjustable, so more height can be added when the pups begin to walk and climb out of the box. Laurie Ward shared this photo of her whelping box with the puppy rails clearly visible. Floor — Whether you want or need a floor in your box will depend on the floor surface where you are whelping the litter. I whelped my litters in my basement, and while these were clean, dry cement floors in newer homes, the floors were also cold to the touch depending on the season. I often added a sheet of Styrofoam insulation under the floor of the whelping box as well for added protection from cool drafts and chilling. Newspapers are cheap but be prepared to go through a ton of them so start saving up early on. These loose strips get shuffled around by the bitch and the puppies moving about, the strips will stick on top of stool and wet spots, keeping the pups and mom from lying in or crawling through any mess. The strips are lightweight so they easily move around to help keep things cleaner in the box. Towels or blankets can be used but there are definite disadvantages. Very young puppies can get trapped and lost underneath and then can easily be crushed by their mother or may suffocate if they become wrapped or rolled in the material. Unfortunately one cannot get one mat large enough for the entire box so several must be pieced together. It does need to be cut to size to fit the box, and needs a good washing to remove all the residual chemicals and to soften the nap. A good option for lining the whelping box for newborns are lambskin crate pads. These are artificial lamb-like fur pads that come in various sizes and are easily found in most dog catalogs. These pads absorb liquids to keep puppies from laying in wetness, and are easily cleaned in a clothes washer. They are thick so the puppies can cuddle in them for extra warmth and the pups get good traction when crawling to get closer to their mother. You can buy lambskin crate material in bulk from some companies so the exact dimensions of your whelping box can be matched when ordering your pads. Links following this article are included for a couple of sites who offer this material. Photo by Laurie Ward of mom and pups snuggling in the whelping box. Location, Location, Location…. Where to place the whelping box for the birth? Where to keep the whelping box as the pups get older and begin to eat solid foods and poop, and poop, and poop? Convenient and quiet — where ever you decide to whelp and raise your litter, make it in a convenient place for you to be able to monitor the bitch and the puppies. I recommend whelping puppies inside the house, and as the whelping itself can take a long time and often seems to happen at night, having a couch or lounge chair nearby for cat naps is high on my priority list! Ideally, the location should be quiet with the least amount of family activity. If you have lots of family members or small children, probably the basement, laundry room or garage is best. Bitches with newborn puppies can be very temperamental, protective and are easily disturbed. Giving the bitch a quiet and secluded place to nest with her puppies is going to simplify many things for you and for her. Temperature — you will need to be able to control the temperature of the whelping room or at the very least, the whelping box itself, as the biggest threat to newborn puppies is chilling. A draft free room, away from frequently opened doors and windows during cool weather is a good start. A heat lamp that can be raised or lowered to adjust the temperature for warmth should be placed strategically in one corner of the whelping box. I strongly urge you to use either a heat lamp or a puppy heating pad as opposed to heating the entire room and subsequently the dam to keep the puppies from chilling. I always keep a thermometer fastened securely to the whelping box and near the floor under the heat lamp so I can monitor that the area is warm enough to prevent the puppies from chilling but not overheating. Both options are viable and a matter of personal preference. Diarrhea following delivery is common, especially if the bitch eats placenta during the birth process. Additionally, the bitch will have a vaginal discharge following delivery, sometimes this is heavy and often it is messy. Weaning pen attached to whelping box. Notice the fleece pads in use for bedding in the whelping box and the newspaper strips being used in the weaning pen. Thanks to Debbie Bjerkestrand for sharing her photos with us. Once this process begins, Mom stops wiping their little butts and cleaning up after them so — well — poop begins to happen! Around days of age, caring for Gordon Setter puppies becomes a challenge, and you need to have a plan ready to enact for how you will handle the much-needed expansion. Unless you live in a temperate climate, you like me, will most often be raising those puppies completely indoors with a trips outside to play when the weather permits. This is where a weaning pen comes in. Weaning Pen — this is an enclosure that can be constructed from same material as the whelping box, an exercise pen, or any other puppy safe fence like material that will confine the pups in a larger space so they have more room to run and play and to also use as a potty area, thus keeping the whelping box a clean area for sleeping and eating. The size of the area you need for a weaning area will depend on the size of the litter, obviously twelve puppies would need more room than four. Bedding for the Weaning Pen — the trick to keeping puppies clean and sweet-smelling is to find the right bedding for soaking up the pee and poo that comes right along with their cute wiggly little butts. After years and years and many different choices my favorite bedding for weaning puppies, will always pine shavings never cedar shavings as they are toxic. This means that my puppy weaning pen needs a solid 3 or 4 inch tall rail to hold the shavings inside the pen, rather like bedding in a horse stall. Urine will soak right into the shavings keeping it out-of-the-way. I am used to buying bales of pine shavings at a farm feed store, so places that sell horse and cattle supplies will often carry them. They are bagged in paper or plastic and are about the size of a bale of hay. I want the large, flaked, actual wood shavings not the small, fine stuff that is used in hamster cages. The drawback is that the flakes get everywhere as they drift and float about or stick in hair and on shoes. But cleaning up those stray shavings sure beats cleaning up stinky puppy poop papers! I use a poop scoop to clean out the puppy piles frequently and when the shavings start to appear dirty or wet I scoop them out with a shovel, disinfect the floor with some bleach and throw down a new 2 to 3 inch deep pile of shavings for pups. Newspaper strips — can also be used as bedding in the weaning pen. I know it is possible to by newspaper in rolls for this use so you may have success purchasing this online as well as locally. There should be an open puppy door to allow the pups free access to move freely between inside and out. Puppy play area and weaning pen. Thanks to Laurie Ward for sharing this photo of her indoor set up. As the puppies grow, having a much larger place for the puppies to roam and play is important for muscle development and socialization skills. Puppies kept in a small whelping box until they are 8 weeks old will have poorer muscle development, could have coordination problems, and be socially delayed compared to pups who are allowed to run, play, and explore both inside and outside. People socialization is extremely important between 4 to 8 weeks of age for Gordon Setter puppies, so spending as much time with them as you can both inside and outside is critical, as are inviting neighbors and friends by to visit with them. This is the time when your puppies need to be introduced to as many sights, sounds and smells as you can safely find for them, so be sure to enlarge their world to include time outside the weaning pen too. Debbie Bjerkestrand shared these photos of her puppies outside at play. In addition I found a couple of sites with whelping box plans to give you a variety of things to look at as you decide what it is that you want to include in your set up. Typically, they are not meant to treat a particular illness, but can help lessen the severity of certain clinical signs. Because commercial diets provide the right amounts of vitamins and minerals, owners must be cautious giving certain supplements to their dogs. This is because certain vitamins like A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble vitamins, meaning that your dog can develop health problems if he is overdosed. Over the past few decades, joint supplements have been very popular for dogs, and fiber supplements and probiotics have recently played an important role in various gastrointestinal ailments. Each stage has specific nutritional needs, and supplements can play a crucial role in supporting their health and well-being. Here is what you need to know about each stage and which supplements may be needed for a puppy, adult, or senior dog. Puppy Stage During the puppy stage, Golden Retrievers grow and develop rapidly. They require a diet that is high in protein, fat, and other essential nutrients. Supplements that can benefit Golden Retriever puppies include probiotics, which can help promote healthy digestion and support their immune system. Joint support supplements can also help support the development of strong bones and joints, which is important for large breeds like Golden Retrievers. Adult Stage During the adult stage, Golden Retrievers need a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Supplements that can benefit adult Golden Retrievers include probiotics, which can promote healthy digestion and support their immune system. Omega-3 fatty acids can help maintain healthy skin and coat, while joint support supplements can help prevent joint problems later in life. Antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E can also be beneficial for adult Golden Retrievers, as they help to support a healthy immune system and prevent oxidative damage. Senior Stage As Golden Retrievers enter their senior years, they may require different supplements to support their health. Joint support supplements become even more important as they age, as they may be prone to arthritis and other joint problems. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help support cognitive function in senior Golden Retrievers, as well as maintain healthy skin and coat. Antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E can also be beneficial for senior dogs, as they help to support their immune system and prevent oxidative damage. Conclusion From probiotics to fiber and joint supplements, there are simply too many products available to remember them all. Be sure to check that you are feeding your Golden the right amount of food as well. Read our Golden Retriever Feeding Chart to learn more. There are so many things to love about Goldens. From fun playtime and exercise to grooming and the type of food you feed them, Golden Retrievers are some of the sweetest family dogs you'll ever meet. With the average lifespan of this beloved breed between 10 - 13 years, good nutrition and quality supplementation significantly increase their quality of life. Because much like people, dogs have special nutritional requirements. In fact, even different dog breeds have unique needs from other dog breeds. It's one of the reasons why many dog owners seek out breed-specific nutrition. When you're able to dial in the exact amount of vitamins, minerals, probiotics, antioxidants, enzymes, and other nutrients your dog needs, their coats shine brighter, their skin is healthier, they see better, and their overall wellness is noticeable. Some specialty dog foods don't use as many fillers and binders but still only have the basic essentials for your pet. They all mean well, but the one-size-fits-all approach only gets you so far. As we mentioned before, each breed has unique and specific nutritional requirements to help them be at their best. Golden Retrievers are friendly, intelligent, and devoted dogs. They require grooming regularly to keep their coats clean and healthy, and they shed. And their active levels of play mean they need the nutrition to keep up with you and your family. The most common types of supplement for Goldens are hip and joint supplements and probiotics. Like all large breed dogs, Goldens have a predisposition for hip dysplasia, an excruciating hip condition that can lead to arthritis and loss of function. With their long hair and heavy coats, Golden Retrievers can also benefit from a skin and hair supplement. Healthy coats keep allergies down and help prevent excessive itching and scratching. Many supplements contain ingredients like glucosamine, fish oil, antioxidants, and probiotics. These valuable nutrients help keep your dog's nutrition in the optimal zone, which greatly improves their quality of life. This produced a large litter of mainly black-colored pups with the exception of a single yellow pup. Each breeding pair was specifically picked by the Baron to further the retriever characteristics as well as the beautiful golden-yellow coat. As the breeding program went on Red Setters and Labradors were added to the pairings to bring in some of their retriever traits. Some historians believe a sandy-colored bloodhound may also have been used in some of the early breed pairings. Every Golden Retriever today are descendants of Nous and Belle. Often considered to be the 4th smartest dog breed behind Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds. They make amazing watch dogs… but not great security dogs. Golden Retrievers have webbed feet… It's what makes them amazing swimmers. Over the years Golden Retrievers have captured the hearts of millions of people all over the world. ALLERGIES: Goldens are also more prone to allergies than short-haired dogs, since their long hair picks up allergens on floors and grass, and they are more likely to cover more ground when allowed to run outside, giving them a better chance to encounter more. If left unchecked, it can turn into anxiety which leads to behavioral changes. Once your dog develops a mood disorder, it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to correct it. The only sign which a veterinarian can pick up on is an irregular heartbeat. The good news is that the condition is treatable with medical intervention, and if you take your dog in for annual checkups, your vet is likely to pick up on it. The right supplement, specifically formulated for your Golden Retriever, will not only save you money on 'generic' ingredients it will also help reduce unnecessary vet bills due to a lack of required nutrients for your dog's best overall health. Supplements cannot "treat" or "cure" any diseases, illnesses, or issues. Be wary of any supplement that claims to be the answer to every problem your dog may have. Supplements can assist your dog's natural functions in helping them work better. Which means a healthier, happier dog. Specialty dog foods don't use as many fillers and binders. Similar to humans and extra sugars, dogs turn extra protein into fat easily. Also beware of anything claiming to be a multivitamin for dogs if the ingredients look like a human multivitamin. Dogs and humans don't have the same vitamin needs. Try to walk your Golden and find a place for him to run every day. Golden retrievers are among the more active breeds and require more exercise than most. Whether you're in the pet store or on Amazon, make sure to use brushes made for long-haired dogs, and set aside a little time every week to brush those locks. Their hair should never be clipped or shaved. The more space to run, the better. If possible, a house with a fenced yard is ideal. As with Any pet or child, be sure to keep all cleaning agents locked away. E-mail Share Do you have concerns about the well-being of your Golden Retriever? Do you care that they obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals to live a long and healthy life? Knowing what's best for them can be challenging. To your good fortune, we have created a list of some of the most effective supplements and vitamins available today that will aid in maintaining any Golden Retriever's health. Pure Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil Taking your Golden Retriever on a diet of geniune, wild Alaskan salmon oil is a great way to help them stay healthy and strengthen their immune system. Your dog's resistance to cancer and other ailments will be significantly bolstered! Omega-3 fatty acid—rich fish, such as tuna and salmon, have been linked to a decreased risk of depression in people, and this is the same concept. These may not seem like much, but because they are so crucial for the immune system's overall defense against infection and the inflammatory response, they have been found to reduce cancer risk. It's no secret that probiotics have gained popularity in both human and animal health. People and animals carry both "good" and "bad" bacteria in their digestive systems. When there is an ailment or inflammation, harmful bacteria, called pathogens, can push out the good bacteria and cause more illness. The immune system can react more quickly and effectively to potential threats when supplemented with probiotics, colonies of live beneficial bacteria. Glandex Soft Chews Your Golden's allergies or digestive issues may stem from a problem with his anal glands. No matter the case, Glandex Soft Chews are among the leading fiber supplements on the market and can significantly improve anal gland health. These are small, marble-shaped glands located in a dog's anus. They secrete a thick, foul-smelling fluid that facilitates defecation. Soft and chewy, Glandex is packed with pumpkin and fiber. Because of the water absorption properties of these supplements, the resulting stool is more substantial and healthier. These bowel movements let your Retriever's anal glands discharge themselves naturally, reducing the risk of infection. Glucosamine is a natural substance that aids cartilage development; however, it might lead to nausea in some dogs. So, these joint chews might be healthier for your Golden Retriever if they already have stomach problems. Due to its impressive track record of enhancing mobility in senior pets, CMO chondroitin is dubbed "The New Glucosamine" and is included in these tasty chews. The MSM in this medication is another excellent component for alleviating joint pain, especially arthritis-related stiffness. Additionally, giving your Golden Retriever these joint chews is an excellent strategy to foster their hip health. Krillex Joint Supplement Most dogs will suffer from orthopedic diseases at some point. Orthopedic problems, like hip and elbow dysplasia, run in the family for Golden Retrievers, and elderly Goldens will probably acquire arthritis. Supplements targeted at the joints have been shown to slow the deterioration of joints, enhance joint function, and decrease pain and disability. For example, Krillex Joint Supplements are a multi-purpose supplement that can be taken as a single chewable tablet. Conclusion There are certainly far too many products on the market for most retriever parents to keep track of them all, including probiotics, fiber, and joint supplements. Your healthy Golden could use one of these supplements. Thus familiarizing yourself with the best brands is in everyone's best interest. Featured Golden Retriever Products. Glucosamine and chondroitin Folic acid Remember that all of these nutrients must be given in proper amounts. This way, your dog will think of the vitamin as a treat instead of a medication. This will make feeding much easier, especially if you have a picky dog. With that, a supplement with a lot number means it has undergone quality control procedures. This also means that the manufacturer is monitoring the movement of the product, so it can be pulled out of the market even before it reaches the end of its shelf life. If canine supplement sellers make too-good-to-be-true promises, you should consider looking for another product. These claims are often unfounded and can potentially pose harm to some dogs. Big brands often have a network of laboratories, advanced manufacturing facilities, and experts that guarantee the efficacy of the vitamins. As much as possible, look for canine vitamins made by pet brands. These brands are also tried and tested by thousands of dog owners around the world. Second, the fact that the brand is willing to refund your purchase says a lot about their confidence in their products. Tips in giving vitamins to your Golden Retriever Is your Goldie picky when it comes to vitamins? If the vet recommended a tablet or pill form, the following hacks would help trick your dog into taking the supplement: Mix it with food. Slather it with peanut butter. Another trick pet owners recommend is covering the vitamins with peanut butter. This will mask the undesirable taste of the pill or tablet. Place it inside a strawberry. Conceal it in a piece of cheese. Bait and switch. You can trick your dog into taking the supplement by giving it a few treats in a row then tossing the pill at a constant speed. Frequently Asked Questions Q: What vitamins are bad for dogs? A: While vitamins and minerals are often regarded as beneficial for canines, there are some that you have to be careful with. You should always watch out for the iron, calcium, and Vitamin D consumption of your Golden Retriever as too much can become poisonous. Q: What causes a weak immune system in dogs? Many pet owners also swear by a vitamin supplement to give their pets an added dose of nutrition. Q: Is Vitamin D good for dogs? A: Both dogs and humans need Vitamin D for good health. Excessive Vitamin D consumption can lead to joint issues, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive drooling, and poisoning. Q: Can I give my dog human fish oil as a supplement? A: Most human-grade fish oils are safe for dogs, but you should always mind the serving. If your dog starts to vomit or have diarrhea, you should stop giving fish oil right away. Final words The best vitamins for Golden Retrievers will help keep your dog safe from infections and various illnesses. Always listen to the vet instead of purchasing a supplement without professional advice. Do you want to make sure they are getting the supplements they need for a healthy life? It can sometimes be difficult to know what is best for them. Lucky for you, we have compiled a list of some of the best supplements on the market today that will help keep your Golden Retriever at their best! Things to Consider When Buying Supplements for Your Golden Retrievers There are certain things that you need to be careful about when you are buying supplements for your dog. Always Read the Labels Carefully The most important thing that you need to do when buying supplements for your dog is to read the labels carefully. This will ensure that you are getting the right dosage and that the supplement is safe for your pet. Some Supplements Can Interact With Other Medications Another thing to keep in mind when buying a supplement for your dog is that some of them can interact with other medications they may be taking. If you are unsure if a supplement will interact with another medication, it is best to talk to your veterinarian before giving it to your pet. Some dogs have allergies and can have adverse reactions to certain supplements. A Word about Reviews and Ratings Online Reviews and ratings online are something else you should be weary of when buying supplements for your pet. It is important that you read through them all carefully before making a final decision on the supplement in question, especially if it has a high rating or too many reviews claiming how great it is. This could mean there are not enough negative reviews out there because they were left by people who had issues with the product and did not want to post their review. Always take this into consideration as well! Take a Vet's Advice The best advice that we can give you when it comes to buying supplements for your Golden Retriever is to take a vet's advice. They will be able to tell you what the dog needs and what specific supplement would be best for them. So, if you are unsure about anything, always go to the vet! Not only will they be able to tell you about some good supplements but they will also guide you regarding the amount of supplements you should give your dog. Choose a Product That Has Variety of Ingredients Another thing to keep in mind is that you want a supplement with variety of ingredients. This will ensure that your dog is getting all the vitamins and nutrients they need for optimal health. It will also help to prevent any allergic reactions your dog may have. This company is known for their high quality supplements and they also have a variety of products to choose from. So, whether you are looking for a joint supplement or something to help with skin allergies, US Producers likely has what you need. Choose a Supplement Specifically Tailored For Your Dog's Needs In addition to choosing a supplement with variety of ingredients, you should also choose one that is specifically tailored for your dog's needs. For example, if your dog has joint pain, you will want to find a joint supplement that contains chondroitin and glucosamine. This will help to reduce the inflammation in the joints and help your Golden Retriever feel better. Make sure they actually need the respective supplement because you start giving it to them. This will reduce their chances of having an adverse reaction to it. There are several medical issues that Golden Retriever's face. The most common of these, is cancer. This can be in the form of lymphoma, tumors or cancer of the blood. If your Golden Retriever is diagnosed with cancer, you will likely have to start them on chemotherapy treatments. So, it is important that you keep this in mind when choosing a supplement for them. This will greatly increase your dog's chances of fighting off diseases and illnesses, including cancer! If you have ever heard about omega-rich fishes like tuna or salmon helping to reduce depression in humans, well this is basically the same principle. The fish oils found within these types of fishes are extremely beneficial for us because they contain essential fatty acids which our bodies cannot produce themselves but we still need them nonetheless. These fatty acids are then converted into prostaglandins. These may not sound like much but they play a critical role in the inflammation response and our body's general immunity to infection which is why they have been shown to help prevent cancer! One of the best on the market and one that has been shown to be highly effective at improving digestion in dogs, is Purina FortiFlora. This product will help keep their stomach healthy and improve how they digest food. In addition to using this for your Golden Retriever if it develops an upset stomach from eating something non-edible such as grass , you can also use this for prevention purposes. By doing so, it may actually reduce these symptoms before they occur! If your Golden Retriever already suffers from chronic constipation or gastric issues, this probiotic supplement can also be used to help improve their digestion. This is because it contains live active cultures which will colonize your dog's gut and actually reduce the harmful bacteria causing these digestive problems! Glucosamine are natural compounds that help build cartilage but they can upset the stomach of some dogs, causing vomiting. So if your Golden Retriever already has digestive issues it may be better off with these joint chews instead! These soft chews contain CMO chrondoitrin which is an ingredient known as "The New Glucosamine" due to how effective it is at improving mobility in older pets! This product also contains MSM, another excellent compound when it comes relieving joint pain, especially stiffness caused by arthritis. Plus, these joint chews are also a great way to promote healthy hips in your Golden Retriever. They contain antioxidants which help reduce inflammation and pain in the joints as well as Omega- fatty acids which can help lubricate the joints and improve overall mobility. If your dog is starting to slow down or has trouble getting up, it may be time to start him on a supplement like this! If your dog suffers from a heart condition or kidney problems, you should consider supplementing their diet with triglyceride omega fatty acids. These capsules are an excellent source of Omega- fatty acids which have been shown to improve heart health and help reduce the risk for kidney disease. They also contain antioxidants which can help protect the cells in the kidneys from damage. In addition to helping improve heart health and protecting the kidneys, these supplements can also help improve cognitive function in older dogs. This is because they contain DHA docosahexaenoic acid - an Omega-fatty acid that is known to support cognitive health. So if you're noticing your Golden Retriever isn't as sharp as they used to be, consider adding these capsules to their diet! Plus, since they are in capsule form, it's easy to add them into your dog's food without any fuss. Just give them one or two capsules a day and you'll be helping keep their heart and kidneys functioning properly! It contains cranberry extract which has been shown to be effective at preventing and treating UTIs. In fact, it's so effective that it's often prescribed by veterinarians to dogs with recurring UTIs! In addition to cranberry extract, this supplement also contains D-mannose. This is another compound that has been shown to be helpful in preventing and treating UTIs. D-mannose helps flush out the bacteria causing the infection, making it an excellent choice for quickly clearing up a UTI. This supplement also comes in chewable form, making it easy for your dog to take. Just give them one of these daily and they'll be on their way to a UTI-free life! These supplements come in the form of chews, and they are packed full of nutrients that are essential for healthy skin and coat. Some of the key ingredients in these chews include Omega- fatty acids and biotin. Both of these ingredients are known for their ability to promote healthy skin and coat, making them an excellent choice for keeping your dog's fur looking its best. Plus, these chews also contain antioxidants which can help protect your dog's skin from damage caused by free radicals. This can be especially helpful if you live in a dry climate or your dog spends a lot of time outdoors. Greenies supplements are also chock-full of nutrients that can help improve the health of your Golden Retriever's teeth and gums. We are fortunate enough to be living in a time where we can get supplements for almost all types of issues that our canine friends can suffer from. So if your golden retriever is suffering from any one of the above mentioned issues then you can get the supplements delivered right to your doorstep. You can also find supplements for other problems that your dog might face. All you have to do is go online and do some research and you are bound to find a good supplement that will work for your dog and help in relieving your dog of that that respective medical issue. More Health. But as with all dogs, Goldens require a certain amount of care and attention to stay healthy, strong and vibrant. Regular veterinary visits, along with proper nutrition and exercise are important, as is understanding the underlying health issues associated with this breed. The Use of Supplements: A Natural Rx for a Healthier Golden Supplements containing vitamins, rich minerals and other antioxidants have a positive impact on the lives of Golden Retrievers. That's why more veterinarians are recommending their use as part of a proactive approach for managing the long-term health and well-being of Golden Retrievers. Some of the benefits supplements may provide for your Golden Retriever include: Help alleviate certain types of cancers, in addition to heart disease, diabetes, cataracts caused by diabetes, and glaucoma. Ease chronic hip, joint, and muscle pain and help animals suffering from arthritis. Support an active and healthy lifestyle that can prolong your dog's life. Be an important tool to fill the nutritional gaps in your dog's diet. Help save money by limiting costly treatments and surgeries. Ease suffering in older animals and help improve their quality of life. A Brief History of the Golden Retriever The golden retriever was crossbred in the late 's to be a super hunting dog for the wet and rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands. They share bloodlines with a variety of sporting dogs including Red Setters, Yellow Retrievers, Bloodhounds and a Tweed Water Spaniel that has long been extinct. The Golden, as it is commonly known, was officially recognized as a breed in the U. The breed established its presence in the s and '40s, as hunting dogs and at field trials and shows, then also in obedience trials. While the early dogs in North America were mostly darker shades of golden, lighter shades have also become popular in later years. Friendly and affectionate, the Golden Retriever has been called the perfect family pet because of its playful nature, and desire to be around people, especially children. Some Fun Facts about Golden Retrievers Their strength and willingness to work hard makes them ideal search and rescue dogs. Loyal, patient and forgiving, Goldens are one of the best service and guide dogs. The Golden Retriever is one of the smartest breeds, ranking only slightly behind Border Collies and Poodles in intelligence. Health Issues Golden Retriever Owners Should Know About Eye Disease Golden Retrievers are prone to significant eye problems, most of which are genetic such as cataracts and Pigmentary Uveitis PU , the latter often causing glaucoma, which causes both blindness and migraine-like pain. Pigmentary Uveitis is a serious disease becoming increasingly more common in this breed. Joint Disease Golden Retrievers are prone to a painful genetic hip deformity known as hip dysplasia. The breed can also have genetic elbow deformities and rupture of the cruciate ligament in the knees. These conditions can lead to crippling arthritis and require surgery. Cancer Goldens are prone to lymphosarcoma cancer of white blood cells and hemangiosarcoma cancer of blood cells. Heart Disease Sub-aortic Stenosis SAS , common in Golden Retrievers, is a narrowing of the aorta - the great vessel that carries blood away from the heart. It often shows up first as a slight heart murmur, cause sudden death, even in younger dogs. The breed is also prone to cardiomyopathy which can cause heart failure. Obesity Golden Retrievers are prone to obesity, especially in dogs with hypothyroidism. Obesity causes widespread inflammation of tissue through release of pro-imflammatory adipokines, and aggravates other diseases such as joint pain. Immune-mediated Disease The immune system commonly attacks the thyroid gland in Golden Retrievers, causing hypothyroidism. It has been estimated that 1 in every 4 Goldens have this disease. Care Information for a "Golden Life" Some important ways to keep your dog in top shape and mentally fit is to make sure its needs are looked after in the proper manner. This is more than just a routine; it's a healthy lifestyle that will reap great rewards for both you and your dog for years to come. Nutrition Golden Retrievers need a diet rich in high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals to support their size, physical activity and help reduce risk of disease. Foods with Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids help fight natural inflammation occurring not only on the inside of the body but on the outside as well! This is shown externally by less shedding and shinier coats. As physical and mental activity slows with age, a geriatric i. Absorption of nutrients by the gut becomes diminished with advancing age, making it necessary to enhance the diets of senior dogs while lowering caloric intake. Because aging bodies make less antioxidants, incorporating more antioxidants in the diet may also benefit your aging Golden. Exercise Golden Retrievers can't wait to get outside to run or go for a walk! Exercise is critical to their mental health and physical well-being, and also helps prevent weight gain - which commonly occurs due to inactivity and overeating. Grooming Routine grooming of your Golden allows you to inspect their coat, teeth, eyes, ears, and nails for signs of problems. They should also be bathed regularly but not so often as to remove the protective oils in their coat that could lead to skin problems. Have your vet examine your dog if you suspect they have an underactive thryroid gland. Housing While Golden Retrievers relish the outdoors and are ready for anything, they prefer being where you are. They crave companionship and are not overly territorial or aggressive toward other animals. Living with and being around people calms them and makes them happy. Share This Guide: What People Are Saying About Supplements and Their Pets Pet owners just like you are incorporating supplements into their animal's care more than ever before, and with exciting results. Our vet doesn't understand how, but Buddy can see even though he has the big bright green glow from the PRA and the fog from the cataracts. He doesn't get eye infections anymore and there is less brown crud in his eyes. He is walking a little better, putting more pressure on the leg and not limping as much. The results were amazing! Cocoa has regained 50 percent vision in her left eye and she can now catch treats! We were told when her PRA was diagnosed that she would lose her sight completely within a year. It's been two years now and, although she can't see at night, she still sees during the day and you would never know she has a problem with sight. I was told she would be blind within 5 months. I am so thankful she was able to receive this supplement. Thank you so much! This is definitely a plus! Almost two years after his initial diagnosis - there has been no further development of his cataracts. I'm grateful to be among those who can speak personally for its benefits.
