stuffed golden retriever puppy
It's a question that we get asked a lot so we decided to put together this guide. Its a combination of general dog buying tips plus some specific to Boxer owners. The tips below are focused around buying a puppy, however most apply if buying or re-homing an older Boxer too. Find a reputable Boxer breeder We will always suggest buying your Boxer puppy from a proper, reputable Boxer breeder. There are standards and laws in place to protect both yourself and your new pup, and it means you can be sure your puppy has had the best start in life. Of course, there are far too many breeders out there that do not abide by moral standards or even the law, so making sure you find a good breeder is important. Remember that just because a breeder is on the list does not mean you should trust them blindly - always go and meet your breeder before buying a puppy. Ask questions Speak to your breeder and ask lots of questions about the puppies. A good breeder should know all the answers and be enthusiastic when speaking about their pups. Be prepared to answer questions in return, as any decent breeder will want to know that their puppies are going to good homes. Always arrange to meet the puppies at their home - you should be suspicious if a seller wants to deliver or meet at a different location. Meet your puppy and their family This may seem obvious but you would be surprised the amount of people who are willing to buy a dog without meeting it or their parents first. It's very important to go and see the litter, the mum and dad where possible and the seller. You can get a good idea of how a puppy may turn out by spending some time with their parents - if you can, take someone more experienced in dog ownership with you to help. Of course, it's not entirely possible to know for sure how an 8 week old Boxer puppy is going to grow up in terms of temperament and health. A lot of the time a dogs behaviour can be attributed to nurture and not nature - meaning a good home generally means a good dog, especially in Boxers as they are by nature a well mannered dog. Check the paperwork Whether buying from a breeder or a private seller, your puppy should come with at least the following items: A signed copy of a contract of sale Details about your puppy's microchip Information about your puppy's vaccination and worming treatments The above should come in the form of a pet vaccination record book, which you keep and have updated by your vet going forward. Bring your puppy home The final step - where you get to bring your gorgeous new Boxer puppy home! Boxers really just need a safe, comfy home with quality food and loving owners. The reward of this amazing dogs companionship for years to come will make all your hard work worth while. We highly recommend seeking help from a trainer or going to puppy training classes especially for any first-time dog owners. The tips and tricks you pick up will be extremely valuable particularly when your pup grows up. And that's it! You can check out the Boxer Shop for hand-picked Boxer food, toys and other items to keep your Boxer happy and healthy. Recent posts. These results will help owners and vets provide breed-focused targeted preventative healthcare and better inform and prepare potential owners for what to expect from the unique breed. The Boxer dog has long been a popular dog breed in the UK, with this study finding that one in every dogs in the UK are Boxers. Previous to this study, there were concerns that their relatively flattened faces moderate brachycephaly might mean Boxers were more likely to suffer from the problems commonly associated with flat face breeds such as breathing problems and skin fold infections. However, despite these concerns, until now, there has been limited evidence on the overall health status of Boxers. They did so via analysis of the clinical records of a random sample of 3, Boxer dogs who received veterinary care in .So in that sense, many of the health issues of Boxers are just typical dog problems overall. However, the study did identify some specific conditions that Boxers were at a substantially higher risk of developing. These show that the Boxer also has some important health concerns that are specific to the breed. The study found that .Cancer was also found to be the most common cause of death .Following neoplasia, the next most common causes of death identified were brain disorders 9. The most commonly reported overall groups of disorders alongside neoplasia, were skin disorders .The most commonly recorded specific disorders of Boxers included otitis externa ear infection, being diagnosed in 7. Boxers were shown to be quite large dogs, weighing on average .Female Boxers .Despite previous concerns, there was little evidence of major health differences between white and non-white Boxers. Among the 34 most common specific disorders, females had a higher risk of periodontal disease, skin masses, and urinary incontinence than males, while males had a higher probability of heart murmurs, aggression and aural ear discharge than females. Among the 22 most common groups of disorders, females were more likely to be diagnosed with mass lesions lumps , dental disorders, and urinary system disorders, while males were more likely to be diagnosed with behavioural disorders. White and non-white dogs did not differ in the risk for any of the 34 most common specific disorders. The average lifespan of Boxer dogs overall was .There was no difference in the average lifespan of females .These results will assist veterinary surgeons to identify preventative health priorities for Boxers and provide prospective and current Boxer owners with information on health issues to look out for. This study provides modern evidence to help owners to choose and care for their Boxer dogs today based on a solid scientific grounding that should ensure better lives for both the dogs and their owners. This both suggests that less extreme brachycephalic conformation has less impact on health and also shows how disease patterns may vary considerably between breeds, supporting the value of breed-specific health data. It remains crucial that puppy buyers do thorough research regarding breed health and go to a responsible breeder; this plays an important part in improving the health and welfare of all breeds, now and in generations to come. Defining physical characteristics of this designer dog include a strong, muscular body, a short but dense coat, and a short or medium length tail. However, little is known about the history of the Aussie Boxer Mix. Despite its name, this breed did not originate in Australia. The Australian Shepherd hails from somewhere between Spain and France. The Basque shepherds who owned these dogs moved to Australia and then later moved to western America sometime in the 19th century. Aussies were originally used as herding dogs. They are agile and rugged dogs with alert eyes with a penetrating look. Although the Australian Shepherd is incredibly smart and is known to be hard working, they are not the right breed for everyone, especially first time dog owners. As herding dogs, Aussies may try to herd children and other animals, including dogs, cats and birds. The ancestors were capable of hunting big game, including wild boar, bison and bears. Over time, the Boxer has been reduced in size, but they are just as imposing. Like the Australian Shepherd, the Boxer is also a hard working dog. Known for their ability to herd and protect cattle, Boxers have also been used for police and military work around the world. While no one knows exactly when the Boxer Aussie Mix was first developed, we can confidently say that this mixed breed dog is here to stay. The General Appearance of the Boxherd Since both parent dogs are quite different in physical appearance, it can be difficult to predict exactly how your Australian Shepherd Boxer Mix puppy will look like. However, they are usually large and muscular dogs. Here are some important physical characteristics of the Boxer Aussie Mix. Well, you can expect the Boxherd to almost always be a large-sized dog. Both parent dogs the Boxer and the Australian Shepherd are large sized dogs. But how tall does a Boxherd get? These dogs typically grow to reach a height of around 18 to 25 inches. For a more accurate estimate of how heavy or tall your Boxer Aussie Mix puppy will get, ask your breeder about the weight and height of both parent dogs. Other features of the Australian Shepherd Boxer Mix will vary, depending on which parent breed they take after most. A Boxer Aussie Mix has a short and smooth coat just like the Boxer or he may inherit the medium-length straight and wavy coat of his Australian Shepherd parent. The Boxherd comes in many different colors, including black and white, spotted, speckled, merle, golden, brindle, brown and chocolate. This means that the Boxer Aussie Mix can be trained easily. However, due to their high intelligence levels, they will also need to be trained and socialized regularly. Loyalty Boxherds are very loyal and protective of their family. They will always act to protect their owners if they perceive danger. While they are naturally wary of strangers, they can be socialized and trained early to become friendly to unfamiliar people while still maintaining their guardian instincts. This personality trait makes them an excellent choice for a guard dog. They also have strong herding instincts. Therefore, they need to learn appropriate and acceptable behavior from an early stage. Otherwise, they will try to herd family members, including small kids. The Aussie also has a strong prey drive. Although this means playing fetch can be a great activity for them, they may also try to chase small kids or other household pets. They are also skilled escape artists. Therefore, they need a secure, fenced-in yard to help keep them out of trouble. Lifespan Sociability Australian Boxherds are descended from ranch dogs and are naturally protective. Pups need to be socialized at a young age to avoid any antisocial or aggressive behavior. Make sure that you establish authority early on, and make it clear that you are their master, not the other way round. The Boxherd scores well on energy, trainability, lifespan, and sociability. However, some pups have flat faces, making them more susceptible to brachycephalic airway syndrome. They are also known as the Boxer Aussie mix. One of their parents, the Australian Shepherd, is renowned for herding sheep and was bred in America. The Boxer, their other parent, has roots dating back to 2, B. If you are not much of an outgoing person, this Boxer Aussie mix may not be for you. Like many other dog breeds, when Boxherds get bored, they may turn destructive, chewing on your shoes and generally making a nuisance of themselves. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their high intelligence means they will understand commands easily, and their obedience makes them easy to live with. Their protective nature endears them to many families. However, these dogs have a strong herding background , which may lead to negative behaviors, such as chasing moving objects. Some may even grow antisocial and aggressive. Such behavior may prove problematic when the dog grows bigger. It is, therefore, important to train and socialize the Australian Shepherd and Boxer Mix early in life. If you have children, train them on how to interact with dogs. For example, they should know how and where to touch the dog and where not to to avoid any aggressive behavior. They can get along well with other pets, especially when well-trained. Things to Know When Owning an Australian Boxherd Food and diet requirements for this breed are similar to other breeds. Exercise, training, and grooming are just as important, as they affect the health of your pet. Do not let the food sit for more than half an hour. Puppies older than 3 months should be fed twice a day with hard foods. Always ensure that your dog has a healthy weight. If they start to look obese, cut back on the amount of food. Pregnant and nursing dogs should be fed extra food. Start cutting back on the food after weaning the puppies. On average, every dog requires at least an hour of exercise daily to keep them healthy. Playing fetch, running, and swimming are good exercise options. Some Boxherds have flat faces, making too much exercise a health risk. A dog with a flat face has a shortened skull with a compressed nasal cavity, which makes it harder to breathe. This is called brachycephalic airway syndrome , or congenital obstructive airway disease. During exercise, this syndrome causes: Difficulty in taking in sufficient oxygen Overheating, since the dog cannot effectively control their core temperature by panting You should avoid overexerting your dog in hot conditions, and if you have not yet bought the dog, avoid any puppies with flat faces. Go for pups with a pronounced muzzle. In doing so, you discourage the propagation of the flat face and obstructive airway disease. They understand commands easily, and due to their natural inclination to obey, training them is a cinch. As with other dogs, training is most effective when the dog is young. If you find it challenging to train your dog, try signing them up for puppy training classes. When you adopt a Boxherd, make sure you know their background. This includes asking the shelter worker or breeder certain questions: Ask whether the dog has exhibited any health issues in the past or during its stay in the rescue center. Ask whether the dog has been trained before or whether they show any signs of behavior training. Avoid bathing the dog too many times; only do it if you deem it necessary. Use mild soaps to avoid irritating their skin. Hip dysplasia, cardiomyopathy, and degenerative myelopathy are the more serious ones. Cataracts, bloat, and epilepsy are minor conditions that crop up from time to time. Male vs. Female Females are slightly smaller and lighter than males. Some females have been observed to be more laidback, but do not expect this. The character of each individual is unique, and they do not have to inherit characteristics in a ratio from their parents. The choice of gender is up to you, but if you want to raise pups of your own, you might want to get a female. If you do not, however, the genders do not exhibit wildly different characteristics, and no gender-specific behavior has been observed. Conclusion The Australian Boxherd possesses an unrivaled work ethic, can be easily trained, and is protective of their family. These dogs are perfect for everyone but the most inactive dog lovers. They have a long lifespan of up to 15 years, provided you feed and treat them right. See also:. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Australian Boxherd Highlights The Australian Boxherd is an energetic pup that loves going for a jog or trying out harder exercise like dog agility. While both parent breeds are intelligent and have been used as working dogs, they can easily fall upon reactive tendencies without consistent training and mental stimulation. Daily training sessions that last minutes any longer can cause disinterest and backfire as far as creating progress are key to helping this breed retain good manners and stay on track. It may be a wise idea to also enroll this breed in puppy classes or general obedience training with a professional. Even if there are no outstanding behavior problems, classes can keep your dog feeling accomplished and stay sharp on their skills. The Australian Boxherd can be a good fit for some well-informed beginner dog parents, but experience with high-energy breeds, particularly other herding breeds like the Australian Shepherd for example, a previous Border Collie in the family , is ideal. They can be strong-willed and need stimulation and routine exercise. Without proper stimulation, the Australian Boxherd will grow bored and frustrated — regardless of how much love there is for them. This breed easily develops separation anxiety. Dog parents who are frequently home or able to bring pups to work are a good match for this breed. This breed should receive walks for at least 45 minutes a day. A fenced in backyard to burn off extra energy is a near necessity; without space to play, they can quickly grow discontent. These breeds can be prone to behaviors humans find frustrating, like digging, chewing, and barking when understimulated. They will make it endlessly clear they are bored. Both parent breeds, however, are well known and loved. The Australian Shepherd was originally developed to herd livestock for ranchers and farmers in the western U. Today, many Aussies are still used for herding. However, they can find many other purposes: service dogs, agility dogs, or just dedicated companions. The Boxer originated from two older breeds, the German Bullenbeisser — a dog descended from Mastiffs — and the Bulldog. The Bullenbeisser was used as a hunting dog for centuries to hunt bear, wild boar, and deer; their strong build and powerful jaws were passed along to the Boxer. The breed became known in other parts of Europe in the late s. Around , the first Boxers were imported into the U. Lehman of New York. Boxers grew in popularity in the U. Through them, the breed was introduced to more people and soon became known as the favorite companion animal, show dog, and guardian that the breed is today. They have no breed standard, so their coats may be found in a variation of colors from either parent. This mixed breed will frequently inherit Merle or Tricolor patterning from their Aussie parentage, along with a fairly thick coat. They may naturally be born with a short tail. Australian Boxherd Personality The Australian Boxherd is often good-natured and loving with those they know well, but they also can be overprotective or easily startled. Training them consistently when young will ultimately improve their quality of life and yours as an adult. Australian Boxherd Health While Australian Boxherds originating from responsible breeders are often healthy, there are some genetic predispositions towards health issues to be aware of with this crossbreed. Hip Dysplasia. We're not sure if he is related being that he is the only one with long hair. What an adorable puppy! When he first came to my home he was a bit timid, but after a few days of reassurance and care you would never know it! He is patient and kind and I often find him observing the other pups. He loves to jump and play, and of course enjoys a good chew bone. Hadley loves my big dogs and does well with all the other pups. He sleeps through the night, does not mind his baths and should be easy to train. He will benefit from regular exercise and a loving family. Hadley will be a great addition to any one's home! According to www. It is possible that the name was derived from one of the dog's ancestors. The breed's principal forebears were most likely Spanish dogs that accompanied the Basque shepherds and herds of fine Merino sheep exported to both America and Australia in the early days of the colonies. At some point it probably crossed with Collie stock. It has only recently gained recognition as a distinct breed. Australian Shepherds are easy going, perpetual puppies that love to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children's companions that are great with active children. A devoted friend and guardian, for they are naturally protective. Very lively, agile and attentive - they are eager to please, with a sixth sense about what the owner wants. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and easy to train. Though aggressive when at work with livestock, the Aussie is gentle with human friends. Australian Shepherds needs lots of exercise and a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and easily bored. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without exercise. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, so they should be well socialized as puppies. Working lines of Australian Shepherds may be too energetic to be suitable pets. Some like to nip people's heals in an attempt to herd them. They are quiet workers, unlike some breeds, which are bred to bark constantly at livestock. This breed is not usually dog aggressive. They have a life expectancy of years. This breed is often sensitive to ivermectin; however, the dosage for heartworm preventive is considered safe. Be warned that higher doses of Ivermectin are also used to treat mange and caution should be taken.

As a first-time mom, Unity delivered a litter over twice the size of the average for German Shepherds, which is eight, according to the American Kennel Club. The 16 puppies are also the largest litter born through the Guide Dogs' breeding program in its year history. The pandemic has had a detrimental impact on our charity's breeding program and how many litters we can have, so these puppies are even more treasured," Matthew Bottomley, Guide Dogs' head of breeding operations, said in a statement. Breed Title Goldador Puppies Temperament Goldadors are an amazing combination of the intelligence and trainability of the Labrador and the friendly, gentle personality of the Golden Retriever. With their outgoing, friendly character and sweet disposition, Goldadors make excellent family pets around children and other animals as they have a great aptitude for understanding people. In terms of temperament, these beloved pups are highly sociable but not overly boisterous or hyper; they enjoy playing fetch but rest just as happily on your lap or at your feet while you work. Golden Labrador Retriever Puppy Health Considerations Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around years — our Goldadors for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Golden Labrador Retriever puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Finding a Golden Labrador puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. Depending on the climate they live in, Goldadors may need regular baths — however omitting shampoo once or twice a year will ensure their coat retains its natural oils. Finally it is recommended to check the ears regularly and trim nails as needed. Adopted Golden Labrador Retriever Puppies. Tomato leaves stem or unripe fruit Alcohol, beer, wine or liquor Grapes or raisins Golden Retriever Crossed with Labrador Exercise Requirements The Lab Golden Retriever Mix has an active temperament so they might get destructive if they get bored. It is recommended to exercise them at least 2 hours daily. Getting them to do physical activities every day will help keep him happy and healthy. Here are some outdoor activities that you can try with your Golden Retriever Lab Mix: Hiking: It is a great way to turn your daily walk more challenging and exciting for your dog. Swimming: Utilize your private pool and do a swimming exercise with your dog companion. Swimming does not only serve as an exercise activity to yourself and to your companion dog, but it is also a great bonding experience. It also provides relief from the heat during the summer months. Make sure you supervise your dog all the time while doing this activity. Dock Diving: This is a fun sports activity to enjoy with your dog. All you have to do is throw a floating toy and encourage your dog to jump and swim out to retrieve it. If you and your Golden Retriever Lab Mix want to upgrade the challenge, you can try joining a Dock Diving Club and compete with other dogs. Play Fetch: This is a classic outdoor game that is great to do in summer. Challenge your dog by putting a twist to the activity, you can either use a Frisbee or a tennis racquet to make the object travel farther for your Golden Labrador to retrieve and return back to you. However, you should not be working them too much because when it comes to recovering objects, both parent breeds of Golden Retriever Lab Mix can be overly enthusiastic. However, even though they are intelligent dogs and has a friendly nature, you still need to put time and effort to train them better. Both parent breeds were bred to carry things. The best way to teach your Goldador not to bark is to socialize them frequently with strangers. Use Positive Reinforcement The Labrador crossed with Golden Retriever is a sensitive type of dog, so training them using positive reinforcement will be very helpful. Make sure to avoid negative punishment-based training since this hybrid dog may end up fearing you rather than respecting you as their leader. Make it a regular routine to reward your puppy whenever they do something right. Training your Goldador consistently in a positive method will give you pet companions that are obedient and good-natured. Do Mental Exercise The Golden Retriever mixed with Lab is an intelligent dog, and they need stimulating mental activities to avoid developing any aggressive behaviors, such as nuisance barking and chewing. Without proper mental exercise, Goldador puppies will grow into a passive, timid and uninspired dog. Labrador Golden Retriever Mix and Families Despite its large size, the Labrador mixed with Golden Retriever is a great family dog because of its easy-going personality. It is extremely friendly and affectionate. The Goldador is the type of dog that goes well in a loving and active family — one that considers him as a family member. The Golden Labradors cherish the company with children. They are naturally gentle, but they can play tirelessly as long as your kids can keep up. However, due to their sheer size, supervision is still needed around toddlers and infants. The Goldadors makes an excellent therapy and companion dog. Because of their affectionate nature, they generally do well when given lots of attention and affection. These hybrid dogs love to be with people, and hence it is tough for them to cope with solitude. So give love lots of love and affection to your Goldador Lab Retriever Mix and expect that it will shower you back with love. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Temperament German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses are confident and courageous dogs. With proper training and socialization, they can be excellent family dogs. However, because of the prey drive they might inherit from their Greyhound parent, they might need extra training and supervision if they need to share a home with smaller animals. Additionally, Greyhound-GSDs are generally even-tempered and they are known to be gentle with their family members. Health German Shepherd-Greyhound mixes are generally healthy, although they are susceptible to life-threatening bloat. Owners of this crossbreed should talk to a vet about how to avoid this condition. Additionally, hip and elbow dysplasia are conditions that the German Shepherd-Greyhound cross can inherit from their GSD parent. From the Greyhound side, the most serious health concern is a genetic condition called Greyhound Polyneuropathy. This is a progressive neurological disorder that severely affects their muscles. Lifespan A Greyhound-German Shepherd mix can be expected to live between 10 and 14 years. Like all other dogs, they can live beyond the life expectancy of their parents when they are given a balanced, high-quality diet. Ample exercise, proper hygiene, and regular vet examinations will further enable them to lead long and happy lives. By enrolling in this program, dogs that are not eligible for purebred registration and are disqualified from conformation events can participate in many other AKC events. These include canine sports like Agility , Flyball , and Diving Dogs. The GSD Greyhound mix is not very common. So, professional breeders do not have enough financial incentive to propagate this cross. Final Thoughts A Greyhound German Shepherd mix is undeniably a beautiful dog with a noble quality and a pleasing personality. Nevertheless, it is a large dog with boundless energy. As we have established, this crossbreed is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Greyhound. They are both large breeds of dog, so as you would expect, the result of this cross-breeding is also a big dog. These terms are used interchangeably to describe this crossbreed. As these dogs are a mix, no two puppies will be the same. This is because it is impossible to know what personality traits and characteristics will be taken from each breed, making every dog different. Despite this, there are a few things that you can expect from this crossbreed. The main one being its size. You can generally determine the size that a litter of puppies will grow to by looking at the parents. As both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are large breed dogs, you can rest assured that the puppies will also be large. You can also expect them to be muscular, affectionate, and loyal. Is this the right mixed breed for You? Before you welcome any dog into your home, you need to decide if this is the right breed for you. Here are some of the key things that you need to consider before making that decision: Time One of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a Shephound, or any dog for that matter, is if you have the time to dedicate to this dog. Dogs are hard work, and they require a lot of time and effort if you want them to be well-behaved and loyal. This is especially important with Shephounds as both the Greyhound and German Shepherd breeds can be nervous at times. A lot of this is down to the fact that both breeds have been treated badly historically. A lot of Greyhounds are traumatized from a history of being forced to race against their will, and because of this, it can take a lot of time for these dogs to adjust to being family pets. Likewise, a lot of German Shepherds have lived their lives as working dogs, so it can take a little while for them to adjust to being pets too. You should bear this in mind when buying a Shephound. Space Another major thing that you need to consider before bringing a Shephound into your home is whether, or not, you have the space for a dog of this size. While they may be small when they are puppies, these puppies quickly grow into large dogs, so it is very important that you have enough space in your home for them. Nothing can prepare you for quite how big these dogs are, and as they grow in your home, they can quickly shrink your house. But, these dogs are large and heavy, so they take up a lot of space. If you only have a small house, or you have a large but busy house, then you might want to consider if you have the physical space to give to this dog before bringing one home. Professional Training Finally, you need to consider your provisions for giving this breed professional dog training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, so they will require training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often have a very high prey drive , and this can make them very difficult to control when you are out walking them. This can be very difficult to do, which is why you should ensure that you have access to a professional trainer to help you. But, as both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are breeds that have existed for centuries, there are lots of facts that we know about these dogs. Without a doubt, German Shepherds are one of the most striking dog breeds in the world. With just a single look, you can easily identify one of these breeds by their classic black and tan markings, wonderful gait, and simply breathtaking look. They are famous for being one of the most loyal dog breeds to exist and are also well-known for being fiercely protective of their owner and their pack. These dogs absolutely adore being outdoors, and this is one of the main reasons why they make such wonderful herding dogs. This is, after all, where their name comes from. Instead, they are better known for being used as working dogs in the military, police , and even as support dogs for people who are blind or living with other disabilities. The main reason why these dogs are so commonly used as working dogs is that they are so easy to train. German Shepherds are undoubtedly one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. Anyone who has ever owned a German Shepherd will tell you that this breed can learn a trick after only one or two goes, they simply are that smart. They are affectionate, loyal, and kind. They really do make the perfect companion, and you know that you are never alone as long as you have a German Shepherd by your side. These dogs are energetic and healthy, and absolutely wonderful with children and other pets. This is why they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of similarities between these two breeds, and this is why this crossbreed works so well. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are also a large breed of dog. In terms of height, they are very similar, but Greyhounds are a lot thinner than German Shepherds. As Greyhounds were bred to run, they are extremely skinny, to the point where you can often see their ribs. While German Shepherd dogs are bred to be a lot bulkier. Yes, Greyhounds do look very slim, but this is because they carry absolutely zero body fat. Just by looking at a Greyhound, you can see how muscular they are, and this is partly aided by the fact that they have a very short coat. Greyhounds are most famous for being fast. These dogs have been racing dogs, and unfortunately, this practice still goes on today. Due to the shape of their body, Greyhounds are able to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, which is why they have been used in racing. But traditionally, Greyhounds were bred as hunting dogs with the ability to hunt foxes, rabbits, and even deer. They are unbelievably calm, and will spend a lot of their time sleeping. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are incredibly loving, and there is nothing that this breed likes more than cuddling up to their owner and giving them lots of wet kisses. While they will be loving to all members of their pack, Greyhounds tend to choose one member to be their person, and if that person is you then you are truly blessed. They are incredibly smart, and as long as they are trained, then these dogs will not become aggressive. This is why they make such wonderful pets. Key Characteristics of the German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Shephound We have looked at these breeds independently, but it is time that we look at them together. Every Shephound is different as it is a crossbreed, however, there are some key characteristics that you can expect. One is the fact that your puppy is going to have a lot of growing to do. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are breeds that transform a lot during the first 6 months of their life. So, this makes it difficult to tell what their coat is going to look like when they grow up. It is also partly because these two breeds have very different coats. German Shepherds have incredibly thick fur, with multiple different layers, while Greyhounds have very thin coats which help make them more aerodynamic. Due to this, it is impossible to tell exactly what your Shephounds coat is going to be. If your Shephound is a mixture of a short coat German Shepherd and a Greyhound, then you can expect the fur to be mid-way between the two. However, if your Shephound is part long-hair German Shepherd, then there is no knowing just how thick their coat will be. Gentle Something that you can almost guarantee from a Shephound is that they are going to be gentle. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are docile breeds, and they are well-known for being gentle around their owners. So, this is something that you can expect from a Shephound. But, these dogs will have moments of madness. While these dogs will be calm and gentle most of the time, there will be periods where they will be hyper. When this happens, it is important to remember that Shephounds are big dogs, and they are incredibly strong. Loyal But there is one thing which you can definitely guarantee from a Shephound, and it is their undying loyalty. So, whether you are looking for a Shephound as a guard dog or a companion, you can always trust your Shephound to be by your side. However, if you are looking for a dog to use as a guard dog, then a Shephound might not be the best choice. You would be much better off choosing a pedigree German Shepherd. But if you want a dog that has your back until the end, then a Shephound is absolutely perfect. All dogs suffer from health conditions, and the majority of breeds will have genetic predispositions to certain issues. Joint Problems The most prevalent potential health condition that your Shephound might suffer from is joint problems. In particular, hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a genetic condition where there is a deformity in the hip or the elbow, which can lead to limited mobility and arthritis as your dog ages. This is a common health issue for both German Shepherds and Greyhounds, which is why this is the condition that your dog is most likely to suffer from. In fact, this is a condition that most large dogs, and even large cats, suffer with. This condition is a degenerative disease, so the earlier that you pick up on it, the better. That way, you can treat it early and prevent your Shephound from suffering too greatly with this condition. Skin Conditions Another part of the body that both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often suffer with is their skin. Both breeds are genetically predisposed to skin conditions, so there is a fair chance that your Shephound could suffer from this too. In particular, German Shepherds are prone to allergies, which can lead to a lot of scratching and discomfort. Cherry Eye Something else that these breeds are often prone to suffering with is cherry eye. This condition displays itself as a red lump on the third eyelid. This red lump is actually an enlarged and swollen gland that has become infected due to allergies. All dogs are at risk of experiencing this, and it is a very common condition. So, just be prepared that you might have to go to your vet to get conditions like this treated if you get a German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Epilepsy The final condition that your Shephound might be prone to is epilepsy. This is a condition that a lot of Greyhounds develop, so there is a small chance that your Shephound may also suffer from this. Epilepsy affects dogs similarly to how it affects humans, so if your Greyhound Shepherd develops this condition, then they may experience seizures. Dogs can experience seizures with lots of different causes behind it. Some dogs will fit if they become too hot, or dehydrated. But, these seizures could be caused by a health condition such as epilepsy or diabetes. So, you should be prepared that this condition could also develop in your Shephound. If your German Shepherd Greyhound mix does begin to experience seizures, then you should seek veterinary advice immediately. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Temperament One of the biggest influences on whether you will choose a dog breed, or not, is temperament. Everybody wants their dog to have a good temperament, and for their dog to be loving. This is why a lot of people purchase dogs based on the temperament of that breed. So what is the Shephound temperament like? As we have said, Greyhound Shepherds are incredibly loving dogs, and above all else, they are loyal. Fiercely loyal, in fact. Generally, these dogs have a calm temperament, and they are usually very gentle. Especially when they are around children and small animals. But, for the most part, these dogs are lovely. Walk them regularly, and train them well when they are young, and you will have a fiercely loyal companion for the rest of their life. Ability to Train Speaking of training, you may also be wondering how easy it is to train a German Shepherd Greyhound Mix. Well, as you might expect, it is usually very easy to train a Shephound. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, and because of this, they can often pick up tricks incredibly quickly. A lot of people are surprised at how quickly Shephounds can learn commands, and people are also often surprised at how early in their lives these dogs will begin learning. From as early as 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd Greyhound mix will begin listening to their owner and learning commands. So start early with training, and you will have a very well-behaved dog. Nutritional Requirements Shephounds are very large dogs, so they do have some nutritional requirements. You should avoid feeding them grains as this can lead to GDV a bloating condition , instead you should feed them lots of protein. Make sure their diet is well-balanced with protein, vitamins, minerals, and also high in calories. Exercise Requirements The amount of exercise that your German Shepherd Greyhound mix needs will differ depending on your specific dog. Greyhounds only need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, whereas German Shepherds can need up to 2 h ours. Find a happy medium and go with the amount of exercise that suits your dog. Cost These dogs are expensive. Shephounds are also very rare, so you should expect to spend anywhere in this region for a healthy German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Read on as we delve into some of the main breed traits of this wonderful mixed dog. The German Shepherd was originally bred for herding sheep and other livestock, but they quickly became popular as working dogs in a variety of different fields. The Greyhound, on the other hand, has been around for a long time. One interesting Greyhound fact is that, some historians believe that the Greyhound may have existed in Ancient Egypt over 4, years ago! This mixed breed is relatively rare today, which means that it can be hard to find a responsible breeder if you want to adopt or purchase one. With proper research and planning, you can find and adopt the perfect dog. This is because they are a mixed breed and can inherit any combination of physical traits from their parents. However, most Greyhound German Shepherd mixes are medium to large dogs with long legs and necks. They typically have short, smooth coats that can be any color, but they are most common in black and tan. They range in height from 23 to 30 inches, and they can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds. The Shephound is also known for its large, pointy ears. Greyhound German Shepherd Mix — Temperament The Greyhound German Shepherd mix is a friendly and intelligent breed that makes a great companion for families with children. This mixed breed is very loyal and affectionate, and they bond closely with their human families. While they can be protective of their loved ones, they are typically gentle and good-natured with children. Importantly, they famously get along with other dogs and pets. So if you have another pet at home, a Shephound could be a great choice for you. Their short, smooth coats only require occasional brushing, and they are average shedders. When brushing your Shephound, be sure to use a good quality comb that can handle tangles and knots. Unlike other Greyhound mixes , they only shed their coats once or twice a year. This will help avoid any infections. This means brushing their teeth at least once a week and taking them to the vet for regular cleanings. German Shepherd chew toys can also help to keep their teeth clean. The most common health problems for this mixed breed include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, allergies, and bloat Hip and elbow dysplasia are both hereditary joint conditions that can cause pain and mobility problems in your dog. Allergies are also common in German Shepherds, and they can cause a variety of symptoms including itching, runny eyes, and ear infections. Bloat is a potentially life-threatening condition that affects the stomach. It is important to watch for signs of bloat in your dog, such as a swollen belly or pacing. If you think your dog is bloated, bring them to the vet immediately. However, some of these can be avoided by finding a responsible breeder who screens their dogs for these conditions before breeding them. Like the Greyhound Retriever mix , this mixed breed does best on a diet of dry kibble or wet food. When choosing a food for your Shephound, make sure to pick one that is high quality and made for large breeds. You will also want to avoid foods with fillers or artificial ingredients, which can cause digestive problems in your dog. Be sure to feed your Greyhound German Shepherd mix small meals per day rather than one large meal, as this can help prevent bloat and other health conditions. What kind of food is recommended? Some good options to include in their diet include: High-quality dry kibble with plenty of protein and fat Wet food that is high in protein, such as fish or beef Freeze-dried raw food, can provide a more natural diet for your dog For treats, avoid foods with lots of sugar or grains. Instead, try to find healthy options like bits of meat or veggies. You should also avoid giving your dog table scraps, as this can lead to obesity and other health problems. This mixed breed loves to run and play, so they will need an owner who can provide them with plenty of space to do so. A fenced-in yard is ideal, but not required. If you live in an apartment or other small space, you will need to be extra diligent about taking your dog for walks and runs. This breed needs at least 60 minutes of exercise per day, but more is always better. Some good exercise options for your Greyhound German Shepherd mix include: Running or jogging Going for long walks or hikes Swimming The great thing about the Shephound, although they are active dogs, is that a long walk or a vigorous game of fetch should be enough to keep them happy and healthy. This breed is also known for being relatively calm indoors, so they are a good choice for owners with limited space or time. Both my husband and I grew up with dogs and our families are all dog lovers. Our favorite has always been the Labrador Retriever. When we moved to the country in , we had 2 black Labradors. One was a stray and the other my husband found while hunting in the woods, cold and alone. They lived to be 13 and 15 years old but sadly died only 6 months apart. We were heartbroken but knew we had to fill our lives again with another Labrador. This time we decided, since we had a choice, to bring home a Yellow Labrador. We wanted to keep the memories of our black Labs, and start with a new, different color. After doing much research, we found the perfect dog. We were fortunate to meet Charlie Tolkien from Goldberry Labradors. His knowledge and mentorship has been invaluable over the years. He is retired now but our Goldberry lines will go on for many years to come! The blocky head and muscular build of the English style Labrador is a very desirable look. Our clients always tell us, they get compliments everywhere they go. This combination made for an amazingly calm and mellow pet. We breed for health, temperament, and looks. Carefully choosing our pairings to ensure all 3 qualities. Also, specializing in the lightest color of English, Yellow Labrador. We are a very small hobby breeder, only 1 or 2 litters per year. We have no outside or inside kennels for our Labradors. Our Labs have a very large corral when they want to go outside to run and play safely, and a lake for additional exercise and fun. Though they spend most of their time on the furniture, lounging! The whelping box is literally in the middle of our living room, and someone is there to watch them every minute. From the whelping box, they move to a large playpen after a couple of weeks to give mom and pups more room until they are old enough to ween, walk, and play. They are weighed daily and closely watched to be sure every little one is eating well and growing every day. Their temperature is taken daily and monitored to be sure they are properly digesting their milk. When the puppies are 3 to 4 weeks old, they are moved to the kitchen where they get full exposure to the sounds and smells of family life and have room to play. During this time, we teach them to go outside after meals and when they wake from slumber. Our Labrador puppies are almost fully potty trained when they are 8 weeks old and ready to go to their forever homes. Our Labradors, every single one of them, are members of our family. They are loved and spoiled until the day they go to Heaven. We do not breed before doing OFA health testing after 2 years of age and stop when our reproductive Vet recommends that we do so. Remember, we are a very small hobby breeder, so you may have to wait up to a year for your Labrador puppy. You MUST look at our gallery page, puppy videos, and information on our site. You too will fall in love with our Yellow Labrador Retrievers! You may learn why so many of our clients have 2 of our dogs in their family and will always come back to us for their next family member. All Rights Reserved.

Quickly switching foods can cause upset stomach and other issues…and in the case of a puppy it can be the cause of hypoglycemia. A slow change must be made. If you opt to go with a different brand or to home cook, have enough of the 'old' food on hand for several weeks, as well as the 'new' so that that you can make gradual changeover. A quality dog bed — A new puppy will feel stress going to even the best of new homes. This is why making sure that you have a nice, soft, comfortable dog bed is important. You should show your Poodle that this is the area in which he can rest, sleep or just get away from noise when things seem to overwhelming. If you will be leaving your puppy home alone during the day, it is best to have the bed placed in the area where he will be staying. A gated off section of a room or inside a canine playpen works well. The entrance to this can be left open when you are home with your puppy can of course, closed off when you are away. In this way, the puppy will become accustomed to the area. If you will be home with your puppy, place this in the corner of room that is frequently used but not chaotic. Dogs like to have their own quiet spot, but not feel isolated. Walking and ID accessories — Along with a retractable leash and a collar for ID purposes, it is highly recommended to have a harness for your puppy. Toy Poodles no matter what the age and all Mini and Standard puppies should have on a harness and not a collar when they are on a leash. When a leash is connected to a dog collar, this can create too much tension on the neck, which can cause collapsed trachea. The trachea windpipe is protected by rings of cartilage…when this happens, those rings collapse in, causing pain and breathing problems. These can be purchased at a pet supply store and come in many unique and interesting designs so that your Poodle always looks stylish. If you are not sure which harness would be best for your Poodle puppy, you may wish to look to both 'Accessories' and 'Clothing- Harness' in the Poodle Specialty Shoppe. A Car Safety Seat - Long ago cars did not even have seat belts for humans. But now, of course, we all know how many lives they save. The very same is true for dogs. Even if you are a conscientious driver, you cannot be in control of those who are driving near you. Be sure to secure your Poodle into a canine car safety seat. All it takes is 1 second of you having to quickly brake for your Poodle to go sliding off of the seat, completely unprotected. These are also great for dogs that are prone to car sickness. A raised booster seat will assist a puppy in being able to look out of the window which reduces motion sickness. However, choosing high quality toys that can stand up to continual chewing and hold a puppy's interest is better. Puppies are full of energy and filled with curiosity; having a good supply of toys at all times will be very helpful. Puppies that are in the teething phase will be experiencing discomfort and teething toys will help to sooth sore gums and offer a chewing outlet See also: Poodle teething Grooming Supplies - Poodle care certainly involves proper grooming. This includes nails, dewclaws, bathes, drying, wrapping, trimming, clipping and topknots. See also: Bathing a Poodle Clothes - Particularly for tiny toy Poodles, protection against the elements should be implemented as needed. During cold, icy winters the use of canine shoes or paw wax helps protect paw pads from ice melt chemicals and aids with traction. A sweater or cute vest can keep a small Poodle puppy from becoming chilled. During hot months, shoes help protect sensitive paws from hot surfaces. Bowls - Plastic bowls often contain heavy dyes that can cause staining on a Poodle's coat. In addition, tiny scratches that easily develop in plastic bowls can also harbor dangerous bacteria. It is best to use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for both food and water. Dishes should shallow so that a puppy can easily reach both food and water without bumping their heads or straining to reach. Toys and Mini's may like raised bowls. However, Standards - who are prone to bloat- should only eat and drink from bowls that are at floor level. Free feed until 3 months old leaving food out at all times and then give your puppy 3 meals per day plus healthy snacks. Please choose your food wisely; cheaper foods with fillers will not offer the proper nutrition needed to aid with the rapid growth that is associated with the puppy phase. You will find that if you reserve snacks and treats as rewards for training, housebreaking and command training will go smoother. Read more: Feeding a Poodle 2- Start house training right away, keeping in mind that it is your commitment to the process that will bring about success. Generally, housebreaking takes 2 to 3 months. If your Poodle puppy will be expected to use an outdoor area, do not focus too much on indoor training when the pup is home along, since it is difficult for puppies to learn 2 different methods. Do keep in mind that young puppies should not be over-exercised since it can interfere with growth plate development; however a daily 20 to 30 minute per walk is perfect. Walks allow a puppy to release pent up energy, it expands their view of the world and is a good staring point for socialization techniques and learning proper heeling. Poodles are generally very active dogs. Aside from a walk each day, this breed loves to run , jump and show off their agility capabilities. Playing catch, Frisbee or training your Poodle to jump through hoops will keep them in good health, both physically and mentally. See also: Poodle Exercise Requirements 4- Begin a routine of grooming and care. While many puppies will balk at the idea of being brushed or having teeth cleaned, doing these tasks on a regular basis allows a puppy to become accustomed to being touched and taken care of. Taking care of the teeth during the puppy stage is important since dental hygiene will affect the adult teeth that have not yet erupted. Read more: Poodle dental care 5- Limit stress, focus on fun. One of the most important elements of Poodle care is to offer a loving, safe environment. Puppies and dogs are sensitive to their owner's moods and the atmosphere of the house in general. Puppies can become easily stressed in noisy, chaotic homes. Puppies should be given a designated area to retreat and rest if feeling overwhelmed. Often, a gated off area that is secured when a pup is home alone, but the entrance is open when owners are home works best. Speak to your pup in a pleasant voice and remember that positive reinforcement for good behavior works much better than scolding for bad behavior. Take time to puppy proof the home, clearing the floors of any small items and stowing away shoes and other objects to higher ground. This should be done before bringing a puppy home but also on a regular basis. Poodles are amazing canines, capable of high intelligence , strong loyalty and having a range of emotions. Just like people, Poodles can feel sad, depressed, excited, happy, bored, overwhelmed. The Poodle is known for being one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world within the top 5 with a unique temperament. Being so elegant, particularly the show dog, many people do not realize just how friendly and "people orientated" a pet Poodle is. They love human companionship, love to play and are truly a fantastic canine family member. Along with each Poodle having their own unique personality, owners find that their Poodle can also have some odd or particular habits or behaviors. Let's take a look at some of the behaviors of this breed and whether one should be concerned.Sleep Puppies - Poodle puppies up the age of 8 months can sleep anywhere from 15 to 20 hours per day! Their sleeping needs will decrease with age. With puppies, it is very normal to sleep quite a bit and to be extremely active while awake. It is normal for Poodles to take naps. Dogs that are left home alone during the day for more than 3 hours will usually take many more naps than ones that have companionship during the day. Senior Poodles - Senior dogs will sleep more often and naps will increase as the dog grows older. A Toy Poodle is considered to be a senior at the age of 10, a Miniature Poodle at the age of years and a Standard Poodle at 7 years old. It is important to allow an older dog to take naps whenever they wish and not to "push" playing or exercise on them. While daily walks are still very important to health, do allow a senior to rest when needed. Most Common Behaviors Seen There are many stages that a Poodle puppy enters during this fast time of growth and development. Some stages happen so fast, you can see your Poodle changing right before your eyes! Other behaviors can be present for the dog's entire life.Let's take a look at what is normal behavior for a Poodle puppy , adolescent and adult dog.The Hyper Poodle Puppy - This phase will last from 8 weeks to approximately 1 year. It will be normal for your puppy to have an abundance of energy! Poodle puppies will want to play from daybreak to nightfall. It is normal for a pup to run around the home, investigate every object they can get their mouths on and generally wear you out! Do keep in mind that a puppy will want to chew on everything, well before teething even begins. Be sure to puppy proof the house can use firm training if your Poodle is not listening to commands. Read more about how to help a hyper Poodle. The Clingy Poodle - Some Poodles can be rather shy and may wish to stay very close to an owners as opposed to venturing out even a bit to interact with others or to independently play. Over time, this can be wearing on owners and does not allow the dog to have a quality life that is full with exploration and self-confidence. Read more about what to do if a Poodle is clingy. This can be negative or positive. Some Poodles have Separation Anxiety, a term used when a dog has a difficult time coping with being home alone. Dogs who feel this way may become so happy when their owners return home that they loose control of their bladder. Since we can't be with our Poodles every moment although we wish we could , you may wish to read the separation anxiety section. The Chewing Machine - As mentioned above, puppies have an almost uncontrollable instinct to chew on everything that they can find. This is actually a very important stage, as it is a learning stage. An owner must keep the home "puppy proofed", however at the same time one must allow a puppy to explore their world, both inside and outside of the home. When teething begins, this can be an especially trying time. You may wish to read more about this in the teething section. Nipping - Nipping can become a bad habit, if training is not given to show a Poodle that nipping is not acceptable. This can interfere with many aspects, including having your dog behave when company comes over or when your dog is playing with children. Puppies naturally nip because this is the 1st form of play that a puppy learns. It will be the owners job to show their Poodle was is and what is not acceptable so that you do not have a nipping adult dog! You may wish to read more in the temperament section. Jumping on People - This comes from a good place, a Poodle that jumps up to say hello just has a lot of enthusiasm in their greetings. But, this can quickly become frustrating behavior. Read how to allow your Poodle to release pent up energy and learn self control when saying hello: When a Poodle Jumps on People. It's important to deal with this sort of behavior at the onset to correct things quickly. Learn more in the Poodle Growling section. Marking - Marking is different than having housebreaking accidents. With this, a Poodle will spray urine in the house to mark his or her territory. And the reasons behind this can be triggering very strong canine instincts. Fortunately, there are ways to stop a Poodle from marking , by using a combination of establishing proper hierarchy and responding to this in the right way. Coprophagia - Commonly known as eating feces , this is a disturbing behavior that is not uncommon with all varieties of Poodles. A dog may ingest his own poop, that of another dog or even cat feces from the litter box. Learn what can prompt a puppy or dog to do this and steps you can take to stop this. Begging - Dogs that have learned the art of begging can be relentless. If you find yourself giving in, these tips to stop a Poodle from begging can stop this behavior and lead to less stress for both you and your puppy or dog. Disobedience - Poodles can have independent streaks and if care is not taken to teach rules and guidelines, there can be issues with no obeying. Photos by Phyllis Ensley photography September is a favorite time of year for Golden Retriever fanciers, because it is once again time for our national. Ten years ago, this club hosted what is considered one of the greatest Golden nationals of all time — and probably of any breed — on the shores of Lake Erie. That national was judged by the three iconic women Michele Billings, Anne Clark and Jane Forsyth, which resulted in some amazing moments not soon forgotten. With some very big shoes to fill, and without looking backward, this hardworking, creative Golden Retriever club once again hit it out of the park and hosted an amazing event. Some of the friendliest fairgrounds people I have ever experienced. The entry this year was truly significant, with regular conformation, sweepstakes, and obedience, rally and agility entries. When you add all hunt tests, held at another location, the numbers get staggering. To quote the judge of females this year, Mr. The main criteria for the CVGRC judge committee were vast Sporting dog experience, a proven appreciation for the breed, and a reputation for being kind and friendly with exhibitors such a refreshing point. Interestingly, after 82 years this is the last regional club picking its own judges for a national, as that function has been taken over by the parent club. Only time will tell how that will work out; so far, the jury is still out. Karen Mammano and Mr. David Harper. The number of top-rated Goldens and champions handled by these two is uncountable. So, the table was set for yet another amazing Cuyahoga Golden National and — ta-da — another happened. Best of Breed. Tuesday started bright and early with Karen Mammano judging a large entry of in a very efficient and thorough matter. After a few hours of judging, she ended up with a group of very similar class-winning bitches to pick from. A little later, David Harper started 85 males. David was faced with the same problem as Karen, as the quality of the male puppies was as high as has been seen in years. In the end, sweeps finals were judged by Mr. Best Veteran was judged by Mrs. Over the next two days, both dogs and bitches were judged simultaneously. James Brown the country gentleman is there a nicer judge? Wow, did he do a consistent job. His Winners class looked pretty much as if they could have been bred by the same breeder. Brown worked his Winners class again and again before making what seem a tough but quality decision. Beth Johnson more on her later. When I asked Mr. In the other ring, working very hard but truly entertaining the exhibitors and audience, was Mr. Sam Houston McDonald. Never have I seen a judge make exhibitors feel so at ease and enjoy their experience: Thank you, Sam … Nationals are so stressful. If you want a challenge judging, try bitches at a Golden national — it is not for someone weak in the knees. One after another after another, beautiful bitches oozing type entered the ring. In my 47 years of Goldens, they were as good a group as any, and many in there will become well-known names. Then the unenviable job of picking a winner out of a group of cookie-cutter type. How did he do that? Higgans and her handler Ryan Tepara. Ryan has become a very talented Golden handler, and she looked so together for her young age, not easy with a Golden. It was electric to watch the competition between these two; you could point at either and not be wrong. Later, in a large group of 18 Brood Bitches, Mr. What an amazing accomplishment. On Thursday evening, one of the main events of a Golden national, the Top Twenty, was held. This year the three judges were breeder Mrs. Donna Edwards, breeder-judge Mrs. Donna Ernst and all-breed judge Mr. Jamie Hubbard. Beth Johnson. What do you do when there are Best of Breed Goldens to judge? You do it over two days. The 76 bitches were judged Friday afternoon, and dogs and non-regulars on Saturday. This phenomenal task was placed in the ageless and very capable hands of Mr. Carl Liepmann. Liepmann acquired his first Golden in , and has stayed active in breeding and purchasing Goldens ever since. I had the honor of finishing a Golden for Carl a long time ago and learned then that all of his Goldens needed to do equally as well in the field as the show ring, as he hunted with all of them. This year the lone bagpiper played the entire time while each Golden ran around the ring as the specials were checked in one by one. Best of Opposite Sex. Now it was time for Mr. Liepmann to get started with his 76 bitches. As is usual for him, he wasted no time getting them sorted into groups of 20 and usually reducing those to 10 to then come back for another cut. Each Golden was thoroughly examined, each one given equal opportunity to shine. Eventually choosing around 35 to join the males the following day, Mr. Even with the larger numbers, the quality was so deep that it was not easy to reduce some groups to 10 as that process continued, but eventually the final male group of around 30 emerged to compete against the females and non-regulars. Liepmann was a master of his ring, moving the dogs around to all areas of the large ring to allow the entire audience to get close looks at the final groups. After much consideration the final cut was reached, and now came the unenviable task of picking the winners. You could tell the struggle was real as each dog remaining was deserving of winning the National on his or her merits. What a group of Golden Retrievers. Well, the time came, and Mr. Liepmann picked his winners. Riese was brought out of retirement at 10 years old to show in the regular breed class, was in spectacular condition and never quit. He owned the ring like the older master he is. Well deserved. Best of Opposite: Ch. Select Bitch: Ch. At the Golden national, when you start with champions, being one of the 20 Awards of Merit is a very high honor. There are too many to list, but results are available on the Baray website www. Best Veteran. In closing, kudos must be given to this incredible Golden club on yet another amazing event. I know I missed a lot, and I apologize. Be proud of what you accomplished at this amazing national. You will not find a better breeder! Thanks Julie! She really cares about her dogs. My dog is very healthy and has a wonderful temperament. People always tell me how lucky I am to have such a great dog. How many years in dogs? How many years as a breeder? Marissa Hendrix: Our home is in Dardanelle, Arkansas. We are so grateful to the amazing breeders who have shared their great pedigrees and knowledge with us. We really love our professional handlers and trainers who believe in our dogs. What is my kennel name? How many dogs do I currently keep? Marissa Hendrix: My kennel name is Arkgold. We have 11 adult dogs, which keeps us plenty busy along with our eight-year-old daughter. We have Conformation lines and Field lines as well as offshore pedigrees that we are working with towards our goals. Marissa Hendrix — Arkgold Golden Retrievers Which show dogs from the past have been my noteworthy winners? Her wins were big ones too! Eevee is owned by Maegan and Bryceson Nunley who also have great teamwork in Obedience. Which have been my most influential sires and dams? Chuckles was handled by professional Carrie Owens who has helped to teach, inspire, and guide me in the sport. She is currently ranked No. We are excited for her youngsters in Hunt Tests and Derby work. Dash has also produced a number of working Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs. Can I talk a bit about my facilities? Where are my puppies whelped? How are they raised? We moved during COVID to a home with 20 acres, and the first thing we started to do was fence it all in and build a technical pond for our dogs. We also have a pool for them. My entire day, I am here with my dogs in an amazing space made just for them. Our puppies are whelped in our home. I sleep beside the whelping box for weeks as they grow. Every week they reach different milestones in their development and we do different things like early neurological stimulation. They have activity gyms that clang as we feed them and we play storm sounds for them, for example, to desensitize them to new things. We have a great space for them to go explore outside as well. Once they are old enough, they are microchipped and evaluated on their structure and movement in addition to doing a Volhard temperament test on them. Performance Puppies? Field Puppies? Marissa Hendrix: For Show Puppies, we analyze their movement and structure as they change and mature. Then we watch them gait… again and again… until decisions are made. Selecting Performance Puppies is more about drive, intelligence, and biddability. I think, with all puppies, we watch them grow, then guess, then second guess, and then obsess to a point of finally making a decision. Do I compete in Companion Events? Performance Events? Several puppies that we have bred compete in Performance Sports like Obedience , Rally , and Agility. Are Field Trials or parent club Hunt Tests important to me? Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers have a history and purpose founded on being a hunting dog. Preserving these characteristics and having events to be able to test and challenge these talents in our Golden Retrievers is paramount. Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers are to be shown in hard, working condition. Our breed should have the fitness to be worked a day in the field. You should be able to feel good muscle tone as you are going over the dog. Our dogs enjoy running, retrieving, and swimming for conditioning. Are there any health-related concerns in my breed? Marissa Hendrix: What is great about purebred dogs is that the parent clubs work very hard to set guidelines as to what we need to test for to make each generation the healthiest possible. These generations of health screenings allow predictability in pedigrees and guide the future of health in our dogs. Being a retriever, many studies through the Golden Retriever Foundation , the Morris Animal Foundation , and projects like Shine On Study are paving the way for the future of cancer detection, prevention, and treatment for our breed. These research efforts will be able to not only benefit our Golden Retrievers and their health, but also reveal important connections to carcinogens to help humans too. Do I think my breed is supported by a sufficient number of preservation breeders? However, this is a very popular dog breed, so preservation breeders are in the minority. Therefore, the more outreach we can do to educate and inspire others to learn about the Breed Standard and try Field Events with their dogs, the better. Is my breed well suited to be a family dog? Who are the best candidates to own my breed? Marissa Hendrix: One of the staples of our breed is what great companions they make because of their gentle nature and sweet character. Owners with an active lifestyle , wanting a great house companion of a larger size, make good general fits for the breed. Anyone considering a breed for the first time should go somewhere to interact with the breed to gauge if it is a fit for you. What is the biggest misconception about my breed? Marissa Hendrix: The biggest public misconception in general right now is that breeding ANY other breed to a Poodle other than a Poodle is an okay idea. If I could share a comment or two with judges of my breed, what would I like to say to them? Marissa Hendrix: Make sure to select for temperament as well when evaluating the whole dog. The best judges will always be those who are welcoming to newcomers, patient with young puppies, and supportive of Juniors. Do I have any words of wisdom to pass along to newer breeders? Take time to sit ringside with your mentors and watch the judging at shows to learn. Train with and throw birds for experienced handlers in the field, and also, plop your chair in the gallery at field events—and watch. As a breeder, you will be making a difference through your puppies in the lives of their families. It is your responsibility to be there for the lifetime of your puppies as support, as well as working to make sure your lines are the best possible. Breeding dogs is incredibly hard and having a supportive circle of people you trust to cry on when things are difficult will help you to survive it. Are you looking for a Golden Retriever puppy? The best way to ensure a long and happy relationship with a purebred dog is to purchase one from a responsible breeder. Not sure where to begin finding a breeder? Want to help rescue and re-home a Golden Retriever dog? Did you know nearly every recognized AKC purebred has a dedicated rescue group? stuffed golden retriever puppy - By neutering this puppy you are basically destroying its future Would you consider neutering this puppy? The RSPCA spays and castrates at this age, and apparently believes it is ethically and morally acceptable to do so. As do some breeders, rescue centres and a few vets. There is a breeder in Cardiff who was called Lisa Carson now remarried and so not Carson anymore but now Lisa Joyaa Rose I would recommend that no one buys any dogs or puppies from this woman. She neuters her Labradoodle pups, both standard and minis, at six to seven weeks of age. She states it is a contractual obligation from the Australian Labradoodle Association. Simple, do not be part of an organisation that suggests this horrific practice. There are only a few members in the UK and as far as I am concerned they are barbaric animal abusers. She is not the only breeder in this country to follow this disgraceful practice. I really hope she can sleep at night. However, I know of no other breed other than Australian Labradoodle where this is happening on a regular basis. She states it is to keep the bloodline pure. Unless I am sadly mistaken, Labradoodles are not pedigree dogs, they are what is euphemistically known as mongrels. The two main kennels involved in the breeding of these dogs in Australia have apparently been discredited. And I believe are no longer operating or trading. Why is it only Australian Labradoodle breeders do this? If I was a cynic, I would say they did it to limit the number of Australian Labradoodle puppies on the market. Thereby keeping the vastly inflated prices artificially high. More profit for the breeders. How dare they? Is that why these dogs are so ludicrously priced? Some for breeding purposes have been sold for far higher amounts. Choose a puppy who has been neutered at this age at your peril. See what the leading rescue charities and the Kennel Club have to say about this disgusting practice at the bottom of this page. I wrote this article in and this woman is still peddling her bundles of misery in .Neutering is one of the reasons this is happening. See my article and Video Clips on how to stop this. In nearly all cases aggression increased with neutering in both male and female dogs. The opposite of what we have regularly been told. If they imagine that it has no effect on the young pups then why is it that my records show that early neutering is the cause of high levels of medical and behavioural problems? That and the fact that many well-known vets and oncologists are stating that dogs that are neutered early can have severe medical conditions, cancer, spay incontinence, bone, hip, and knee problem are just some of them. Welfare organisation and the Kennel Club have stated their horror at learning this was done to puppies at this age. If you are concerned about this and other aspects of health, then read this as well I have recently written about the very real dangers of Annual Vaccinations. Read this and prepare to be shocked and frightened regarding the health and well-being of your dog. The picture on the right shows a three-week-old puppy. Would you 3 weeks later, take this pup from it mum and put it through a major operation? I saw some posts on a forum recently where this breeder in Wales Lisa Carson trotted out a previous client to confirm that the dogs she bought were perfectly healthy. That client was warned by many people including myself, but still went ahead and bought these puppies. She conveniently forgot to mention that one of them has Hip Dysplasia. When it was pointed out, she said her vet said it, was because of the way it was lying in the womb. If you believe that you will believe anything. She is still defending her decision to buy puppies that were neutered at such a tender age. I wonder if they have any idea why these puppies are born with three essential hormones. Progesterone, Oestrogen and Testosterone. Do they imagine those hormones are surplus to requirements, just an inconvenient extra that has been thrown in like the Sat Nav on a car? Imagine the outcry if it was done to our children at such a sensitive period in these puppies lives. Tinkering with nature at such a young age must have a cost and consequences I believe that it has severe and life-changing effects. As a Dog Behaviourist, I see the effects these actions have on the well-being, health and behaviour of these poor dogs. I kept records of all the dogs I treated for behavioural problems post onwards. The majority of the problem dogs I treated, were neutered before they reached social and physical maturity. The amount and severity of problems I saw increased exponentially the earlier the dog was neutered It beggars belief that any organisation. To put them through a major operation at such a critical and tender age is a national disgrace. In my humble opinion, I believe it constitutes serious animal abuse. I believe these actions may contravene the Animal Welfare Act of .The bill, possibly the most important legislative move on captive and domestic animals since the Protection of Animals Act of , came into effect on 6th April .It makes owners and keepers responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals are met. These requirements include the following: The need: 1. For a suitable environment place to live 2. For a suitable diet 3. To exhibit normal behaviour patterns 4. To be housed with, or apart from, other animals if applicable 5. To be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease I believe the RSPCA needs investigating, as I feel it may be abusing its status as a charity, by what I can only describe as intimidation. Acting as if they have official status when they have no more powers than any other member of the general public. We donate to help real cats and real dogs, NOT fat cats and dirty dogs! You could be the next innocent victim of their war on pet owners Stan Rawlinson September .Updated regularly as further information on neutering is made public. Last update July Read further articles. Castration will prevent your dog from being able to mate with a female dog, resulting in pregnancy, and it also may curtail undesirable behaviour. We also recommend that your pet is protected against lungworm before his surgery and we suggest applying Advocate treatment at least one month before his surgery is booked. Benefits of neutering a male dog Eliminates the risk of your pet developing testicular cancer, which is the second most common tumour in male dogs. This is particularly important if your dog is found to have a cryptorchid undescended testicle. Castrating your pet will prevent your pet from developing this condition. However, if during the surgery we find any abnormality of the womb, we will undertake a full OVH at no extra charge and it should be noted that this may be more likely in older pets. We also recommend that your pet is protected against lungworm before her surgery and we suggest applying Advocate treatment at least one month before the date or her surgery. Benefits of neutering a female dog Spaying your dog can reduce the chance of her developing mammary gland tumour breast cancer , the most common type of malignant tumour in female dogs. This effect is directly associated with the timing of surgery, with the maximum protective effect achieved if your dog is spayed before her first season and it has been shown that this protective effect is reduced after the first season and with each subsequent season. Spaying your dog also eliminates the risk of your pet developing an infection of the womb pyometra , a life-threatening condition that often requires emergency surgery when the patient is very ill. Pyometra is a very common condition and studies have shown that one in four unspayed female dogs will develop pyometra by the age of ten years old. Although pregnancy and whelping are natural processes, just as with humans, things can go wrong and can be dangerous for your pet. Many dogs need assisted births, which can result in large veterinary bills. Neutering eliminates the risk of accidental pregnancy and its associated health risks and costs. It also avoids the necessity of finding homes for puppies, when shelter charities already have to deal with too many unwanted dogs. Unspayed dogs will come into heat, which usually happens every six months. During this time she will be attractive to male dogs and will be pursued and harassed by them for up 10 days. Neutering will prevent your pet coming into heat and the inconvenience and difficulties of keeping her separate from male dogs. Once a female dog has had a season, she will go on to produce pregnancy hormones, whether she has been mated or not. Occasionally these signs can be severe and need veterinary treatment to resolve. When to Get a Labradoodle Spayed My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat It has been usual practice to spay your dog as soon as the animal can endure the anesthetic in recent years. However, this raises the question- How do I know my labradoodle can handle the anesthesia? There are widespread health concerns that spaying at the wrong age can lead to the development of complications. The American Animal Hospital Association advocates that you should spay puppies between 5 and 15 months old. However, it would help if you did not take this as a definite answer. Some vets recommend spaying before first heat Usually happens when the Labradoodle is around five months , while others believe this increases the risk of breast tumors. We always recommend getting a personalized assessment from your veterinarian. If you put off getting the procedure or adopt an older, unaltered Labradoodle, you must consider her heat cycle before surgery. When your dog is in heat, your veterinarian is unlikely to propose spaying. During this time, more blood flows to the area in question, complicating the surgery. As a Labradoodle owner, you should understand that this procedure has some risks. It would be best if you talked to your veterinarian about the optimum time to perform this procedure. Spend time with your veterinarian talking about your worries and aspirations for your labradoodle. Do not be hesitant to inquire. We feel that providing your veterinarian with the most up-to-date and accurate information is the best way to determine the ideal time for spaying your labradoodle. There are numerous reasons to spay your Labradoodle, the most important is that it will improve their quality of life. To begin with, you will have a happy and healthy Labradoodle. Spaying has proved to lower the risk of breast cancer, urinary incontinence, mammary tumors, joint problems, and uterine infections. Complications that are associated with pregnancy, like dystocia , are also eliminated. You can expect the behavior of your dog to be top-notch. Spaying will ensure that you will not have to relinquish your Labradoodle due to behavioral problems like aggression towards other people. Spaying a dog reduces the risk of unappealing smell associated with a dog in heat. Lastly, it will be convenient for you. You will not have to worry about raising other puppies when your pet gives birth. How a Labradoodle Gets Spayed A veterinarian will evaluate your Labradoodle and, in most cases, run a pre-anesthetic blood test. An anesthetic will be delivered if everything goes well. Most dogs will have an intravenous catheter to provide the anesthesia and offer fluid therapy during the surgery. This tube will allow oxygen and gas anesthetics to be delivered directly into the lungs. When it comes to the actual surgery, there are two options. The vet can perform an ovariohysterectomy or an ovariectomy. An ovariohysterectomy involves removing the Labradoodles ovary and uterus. An ovariectomy only removes the ovaries. Before and During Surgery A Parti Labradoodle in this cause black and white When you finally decide to spay your dog, here is what you should do before the surgery: Ensure your Labradoodle is clean before you take her to the procedure- the cleanliness of your pet can play a role in the safety of your pet during the surgery. These precautions, among other things, assist in determining whether or not your pet is ready for the treatment. During the surgery, there will be a team of veterinarians and technicians actively monitoring your pet. Surgery Aftercare You can expect your Labradoodle to take approximately two weeks to recover after spaying. Here are some pointers to help your Labradoodle recover fast and relax comfortably after spaying. At home, allow your dog to recover in a warm, quiet space of its choosing if possible to increase comfort and reduce stress. Administer food, medication , and water as directed. Limit outdoor exposure to supervised and, if required, assisted restroom breaks for at least 24 hours after leaving the hospital. Constant movement can bring about fluid accumulation under the incision. Observe the cut for signs of infection, such as redness or swelling. Do not let your Labradoodle mess with its stitches. Your veterinarian will likely send your labradoodle home with an Elizabeth collar or dog cone alternative to ensure they do not tamper with the stitches. Depending on the stitch material used, stitches will need to be removed after seven to ten days. Your veterinarian will tell you how to verify that the incision is healing correctly and when you should return for the final check. After a given amount of time, some contemporary stitches fall out on their own. In case of any complications, feel free to contact your veterinarian. On the lower end, there are low-cost spay clinics spread across the country. These low-cost facilities lack state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, which may expose your pet to more risk. If you use a low-cost service, make sure you understand what is inclusive before and after surgery. If the low-cost program only covers the surgery, you may need to see your regular veterinarian for a follow-up session. As a general rule, price should not be the controlling factor when choosing a place to spay your Labradoodle. It would help if you treated her like you would treat a companion. Talk to your veterinarian. They will advise you accordingly on your alternatives. Can Labradoodles smile? Get Started on Spaying Your Labradoodle! Spaying is a life-altering procedure. Toffee is the most perfect dood, always has been from pup to adulthood. Very calm has his doodle dashes and playful moments , not destructive, didn't need much training all seemed to come naturally very intelligent, wasn't one for running off perfect, very affectionate loves nothing better than to lie at you feet and be fussed. I have seen other male dogs that have been castrated at a later date, one of the things I noticed is they have a developed penis. Toffees is nearly none existent. This may sound daft as I am ignorant in this field. I was wondering is there a difference in an older dog being castrated e. I hope this makes sense Hi Treacle Toffee The results of very early neutering affects dogs in many ways and some hardly at all. May I just ask a couple of questions how old is Toffee, does he cock his leg, Does he appear leggier than most of the doodles you have seen, with a narrower head and lighter bone structure and narrowed chest. Is he active or somewhat over-calm. Does he hunt or tend to mope about. Is he interested in games and the natural inclination to hunt which is inherent in these dogs. To some extent you have described the perfect dog. But one that may not be acting as this breed should be acting. I sometimes see some of these that appear almost depressed and prone to noise. Many of the females are fearful as is some of the males. I must comment that if these breeders performed tubal ligation or vasectomy to protect their line. Then I think I could accept it more readily, as it is I would never ever buy from a breeder that insists on major surgery on a puppy of this age. I have to say that to my mind they tend to put their own livelihood first and the puppies second, I also believe they have not researched the facts and the possible negative outcomes of this practice. I am not a breeder I never have been and I never will be. But if I was, I think I would have more respect for the needs of these young dogs, and allow them to reach social and physical maturity, before putting them through the trauma of major surgery when they should still be with their litter-mates and mother. I May be wrong but I personally believe these actions may be driven by financial considerations. Once again Carole G has given a measured and intelligent response and pointed out the very real risks of this operation at such an early age, coupled with the fact that the pups immune system is not up to speed at this age, and the fact we are weakening there resistance by surgery before their initial vaccination and booster. It is a medical fact that neutering can increase the risk of an adverse reaction to vaccinations. My thoughts on vaccinations especially annually is a whole different ball game. Coupled with the fact that Hypothyroidism is far more common in early neutered dogs as is infectious diseases especially when spayed or castrated before 24 weeks. I think it is a no-brainer I believe what we should be doing is trying to insist that further scientific investigations should be performed, but in the meantime whilst we are awaiting these results which could take some time then we make our voice be known that this practice should cease until further scientific and peer reviewed clinical investigations have been completed. Which will refute these finding or confirm them. It stops excessive and unacceptable sexual behaviour towards bitches, people and inanimate objects Medically it prevents testicular tumours and reduces the possibility of perianal adenoma or prostatic hyperplasia. Surgical Suit I recommend a surgical suit for a female recovery. For males a surgical suit can also be worn or a pair of boys underwear with the 'hole' for the tail. This is to ensure the breed is developed properly by committed breeders. Young dogs recover quickly from the neuter procedure wanting to play, eat and toilet, and with non of the negative effects seen on older dogs. It is a well known and accepted fact that neutering your pet is a good idea. Neutered dogs make better pets, they are less aggressive and because they are not driven to find a mate, they are more focused on you. They are also found to be much healthier with a lower risk of reproductive disorders and many cancers. Better-behaved pets. Neutered pets rarely scent mark, roam and fight. Majority of bites involve un-neutered dogs. Healthier pets. Females spayed before their first heat season are at much less risk of breast cancer, a common cause of death. They have no risk of uterine infection, or phantom pregnancy, or the many complications associated with seasons, pregnancy, whelping or raising a litter. Mortality rate is minimal and complications occur less. It completely eliminates the possibility of accidental litters or even intentional breeding by uneducated owners or worse case by puppy farmers. It allows the best puppies to continue to further the breed with the focus on temperament and health. The bottom line is fewer unwanted pets, and fewer ill-bred dogs.
