Leave it to freeze overnight. Then, take the toy and your dog to a safe spot where they can enjoy licking and chewing their giant-size pupsicle! Place their soaked kibble in the Kong and freeze for them to soothe their inflamed gums and aching jaws while they chew and squeeze away the pain. Encourage your dog to hunt for her meals by hiding small piles of her kibble around your house in safe, easy-to-reach areas so she has to use her nose to find them. Scatter a couple of handfuls of kibble in the places where your dog hangs out during the day before you leave for the day or when you want to keep her entertained. You determine how easy or difficult you want the game to be depending on where you decide to hide the treats. At first, you might need to leave the food in more open areas as your dog learns to play and sniff for their treasure. Tug can help build confidence in German Shepherds when played correctly. All you need for this old-school game is a tough rope toy and some space to move around safely. To entice your German Shepherd to grab the rope, wiggle it like a snake, let her take hold of it, and gently begin tugging the rope. While your dog sinks their teeth and puts her bodyweight into the pull you get a bit of an upper-body and cardio workout. Or aim higher by working on naming all of her toys in her toy box so she can get them by name when you ask. Either way… Your German Shepherd is capable of learning almost anything that you take the time and patience to train. Remember, your German Shepherd is so smart for a reason. Having doggie friends is essential for German Shepherds, especially puppies. Sometimes your German Shepherd just needs to play with other dogs and socialize. You can schedule playdates with other well-behaved dogs with your friends and family for some puppy entertainment. Many doggy daycares will provide discounts if you purchase multiple play days to keep the price reasonable and provide your German Shepherd with more opportunities for entertainment. There are separate play sections for puppies and larger, adult dogs, so your dog is matched to their appropriate playgroup. Never underestimate the value of a healthy play session to keep your German Shepherd entertained. Sneak in a new toy. Sneaking in a new toy for your German Shepherd can keep them entertained as they enjoy the surprise. Do you have a dog that loves to play with toys? Even busy German Shepherds need to calm down to recharge and relax. Teaching a German Shepherd how to calm themselves and channel their energy into resting and relaxing is actually difficult. If your German Shepherd becomes nervous, anxious, or overactive when you leave home, try these ideas to help comfort them, especially puppies. To make the game interesting, leave some tins without food, but still cover the compartment with a tennis ball. This makes your dog use his nose more and gives them a surprise when they find the food in some compartments but not in others. Frozen Kong Delight By far, my German Shepherd enjoys this mental exercise the best, as the food seems to last longer and keep her quiet. Get out your trusty, indestructible German Shepherd-proof Kong toy. Place a mixture of moistened kibble in the center. I like to add a few spoonfuls of unflavored Greek yogurt mixed into the food for extra encouragement. Set this in the freezer for a few hours to stiffen up. When frozen, give it to your dog for a tasty mealtime surprise! If you buy a few Kongs, you can keep them in your freezer for times when you want or need to keep your German Shepherd busy and entertained. Tupperware Surprise These old plastic food storage containers make useful indoor activities for your German Shepherd. Put them to use with this game. Place several pieces of plastic food storage containers upside down, without their lids, over a handful of kibble. You can put the food storage containers all in one room or place them in multiple rooms for a seek-and-find activity. Encourage your dog to go find the kibble, and help them find the first few to get them started. They must figure out how to turn the container over with their paws or nose, which is tricky for some dogs, especially puppies. Use this mental exercise inside or outside, depending on the weather. This game also uses empty cardboard tubes from paper towels or toilet paper. Place their kibble on brown shipping or craft paper, or even a clean paper towel. Next, wrap the kibble up securely and place the wrapped kibble inside the cardboard tubes. Encourage your dog to explore the tubes. As simple as this sounds, the activity keeps my German Shepherd busy as she delicately removes the kibble from the boxes or toilet roll tubes filled with kibble and paper. No worries. This game really gets an active Shepherd moving and keeps them occupied! Start slowly and toss one ball away from you. While your dog goes to chase that ball, get another ball toy ready in your hand. As they return the first ball, toss the second ball across the grass for them to have another sprint. Only play a handful of rounds, and then let your dog have a rest and some water to avoid them overheating. Instead, use these summer activities to exercise your German Shepherd in the heat. Place their kibble meal or another dry treat inside the toy to help provide a challenge to their minds and bodies. As your dog chases the toy around and works to get their reward, they burn calories and have to use their brain power to work the food loose. You can wash this treat dispensing toy, so if your dog is a first-class drooler, you can easily clean their germs away. This is a mentally-stimulating game for an indoor German Shepherd activity for a puppy or even a bored German Shepherd. Release them from their stay position and respond with excitement and praises when they find you. Hide in easy-to-find spots at first and find more difficult hiding places as your pup picks up on the object of the game. You can start by keeping your pup in a down position as they watch you hide the treats. When they understand the point of the game, you can make it more challenging by keeping them in another room and letting them in only when all the treats are hidden. It also requires very little space and involves more concentration and nose work. To play the shell game, take 3 cups and some treats, and sit across from your dog. Place the cups upside down on the floor and keep a treat under only one. Shuffle the cups before arranging them in a row. Turn over the first one your pup touches. If they get the right one, let them have the treat. If not, re-shuffle the cups and play again. Find-and-Retrieve Find-and-Retrieve is not just a game of obedience and concentration. This game involves teaching your dog the proper names of things, finding those things on command, and handing them over to you. To play this game, start by teaching your dog the name of one toy. Then, make the game more difficult by asking them to retrieve the ball from other places. Here are other things you can do to interact with your puppy, strengthen your bond, and help them to develop physically, mentally, and emotionally: Walking Walking can be a good way for your GSD pup to learn more about the world outside of your home. Allow young pups to walk at their own pace and try not to be too harsh on the lead. Let them stop to sniff and interact with whatever they might find interesting. This will form a huge part of their socialization. German Shepherds typically like water if they are exposed to it and learn how fun it can be. Swimming is also an excellent way to have fun with your growing dog since it is easy on the bones and joints. Being in water will also help strengthen muscles for even better skeletal development. Puzzle Toys Puzzle toys for dogs are not only excellent for mental stimulation but also for independent play. Depending on the toy, it could also help prime your German Shepherd for nose work, combat boredom, and control their impulses. They can compete in these companion sports as early as 6 months old or you can simply join local clubs to engage in these activities for fun. This helps avoid issues like hip and elbow dysplasia in the future. Until your German Shepherd has developed into adulthood, you should generally avoid activities that involve plenty of jumping. Staircases and other steep angles are safe enough for regular use but not as a means to exercise. Additionally, when running or walking, opt for turf and soil rather than concrete. German Shepherds are also one of the most intelligent and most social dog breeds you can own. With a little forethought and some simple additions to your household or routine, you can keep your pup or older dog happy, healthy, and out of trouble until you get home. As social animals, dogs can be prone to separation anxiety. What does that mean? Separation anxiety is fairly common in German Shepherds. When a German Shepherd, or any other dog, suffers separation anxiety, they become sad, scared, or otherwise upset about the absence of their human companions. This can result in behavior problems such as barking, howling, and crying for hours, which can be disturbing to neighbors. Separation anxiety can also cause a dog to begin tearing up and chewing your belongings—shoes, clothes, and even your furniture, for example. It can also be so stressful for a GSD that he begins to have accidents in the house. The pups get used to this royal treatment and showers of love and affection. The sad truth is that some never do. They may see the separation as punishment, or they may become overly worried about you. After all, the German Shepherd takes great pride and enjoyment in being your companion and protector. Keeping your German Shepherd active and busy can help relieve a lot of anxiety all on its own. But they are also great ways to help anxious dogs feel safer and more in control while you are away. And that is exactly what GSDs love most: working! Some involve a little extra effort on your part and some may require new toys or special equipment. Not every suggestion will work for every dog or household, so be ready to try different approaches to find the perfect mix for your German Shepherd. There are many ways to do this, but here are some suggestions to get you started. Crate train your GSD early. Crate training helps dogs learn that the crate is their safe space. Do not use the crate for punishment. Always make crate time fun with toys, treats, soft bedding, and praise. As den animals, GSDs appreciate having a private, safe space such as a crate to help relax and reduce stress. Section off a part of your house for alone time. Your GSD should be taught that certain areas of your home are safe. This is a lot like the crate suggestion above, but it allows for more space to play and stretch out. This can be a bathroom, laundry room, or bedroom, for example. Start by using a baby gate, not shutting the door. Start slowly, leaving your GSD alone in a crate or safe zone for just a few minutes. Leave a treat or new toy with her, some food, water, and soft bedding, then walk away for 3 — 5 minutes. Do this several times in a row, piling on the praise and love when you return. After a few days, extend the time you leave your GSD alone, but always come back and give tons of love. When you leave toys, food, water, and soft bedding with your German Shepherd in his safe area, you are teaching him which objects are his, too. This can be a long walk or job, a rousing game of fetch, or a few rounds on an agility course. Whatever it is that your German Shepherd likes to do for fun with you, do that before you need to leave for work or school. Begin this routine well before you have to start leaving your GSD alone every day. Since dogs are pack animals, they can sense your stress level and your anxiety. Try to remain calm. Instead of being dramatic about it, just give your dog a normal amount of affection, put him in his safe zone or crate, and then leave. Do not look back, do not open the door to check on him; just go. The calmer you are during departure, the less likely it will be that your dog will become anxious. If you followed some of the suggestions above, you should be well on your way to achieving dog parent nirvana. It can be as simple as a box of toys in the closet that gets switched out every week or month. Simply pick up the old toys and put them in a box, then bring the new box down. In another month, you can do the switch again. Keep it interesting by adding a brand-new toy every week or so, just to keep Spot on his toes. If your German Shepherd is attached to one or two specific toys, keep them out of the rotation. Those are the perfect comfort objects and should always be available and within reach. Some common favorite toys include rope toys, stuffed animals, and refillable treat toys. Just keep an eye on your dog and see which toys she gravitates to during sleepy, relaxed times. Time for Television If your dog is used to hearing the television going or a computer running videos all day and night, this is likely a comforting sound to her. Some dogs like exciting shows with lots of noise, while others prefer relaxing shows with calm human voices or sounds of nature. Believe it or not, some dogs actually enjoy watching television, not just listening. If they still seem to enjoy the background noise, try the radio instead. You can either turn on regular radio stations, use online stations with specially created playlists, or you can queue up your own playlist on your computer or other device using songs your dog is used to hearing you listen to. The options are limitless, and the familiarity will help soothe an upset or lonely dog. Hide Surprises Many German Shepherds love hide and seek games with their humans. Too difficult of a puzzle and your GSD could get frustrated and unhappy. Interactive Toys There are a ton of great interactive toys on the market these days. The hardest part is letting your dog have a turn with them! This is an exciting phase for both owners and puppies alike! At two weeks old, puppies should have their ears open, be alert, and start opening their eyes. At this stage, puppies start to stand, walk, and sit without falling over. With this rapid increase in function, puppies can begin to socialize with each other and their mother. Puppies begin to explore the world around them. They can hear, smell, and see and their canine teeth are growing in next to their incisors. When they play, four week old puppies will begin to exhibit distinctive body language such as play bows, as well as growling. Four week old puppies are much more independent. At this age, puppies begin the weaning process, transitioning from milk to Life Abundance All Stage Dog food. Week 5 WEEK 5 A five week old puppy continues to learn from and socialize with their mother and litter mates. During this time, puppies learn more bite inhibition through play. The weaning process also continues at five weeks. Your five week old puppy should gradually be moving on to solid food instead of nursing from their mother. They have freedom out in the play yard through a dog door. Start learning to go outside to potty. Week 6 WEEK 6 Mom usually will not let puppies nurse at this stage and wants to be away from the pups. Some puppies complete the weaning process by 6 weeks old. At this age, they are still socially developing and learning how to be dogs. Because they are so keen to learn, we work more on potty training and no bite. From coat to color, personality to temperament, grooming to health. What is a Red Labradoodle? The Red Labradoodle as a Hybrid But what you need to know first is that, underneath all that fur, your Labradoodle dog carries genes from two purebred dogs. The Standard Poodle and the Labrador Retriever. This is why the Labradoodle is called a hybrid breed as it has parents from two different purebred lineages. There is technically no such thing as a purebred Labradoodle. A red Labradoodle that has one miniature Poodle parent and one Labrador Retriever parent is called a mini-Labradoodle. Because the Labradoodle is a hybrid dog breed that was first developed in Australia, sometimes this dog is also called the Australian Labradoodle. Red Labradoodle Genetics Canine genetics can be a complicated topic. Luckily, only Labradoodle breeders need to master the genetic issues that can help breed the healthiest pups. Every dog has two pigments: black eumelanin and red phaeomelanin. This is because dogs also inherit other genes that can change these two colors. Some genes will change black until it looks brown, blue, grey or some variation. Others will modify red until it looks yellow, golden, cream, orange, tan or some variation. So this explains how the red Labradoodle gets that red-spectrum coat. But what determines eye and nose color? Eye and nose color in your Red Labradoodle Eumelanin is the gene that determines nose and eye color. Other genes can change the black of eumelanin until it appears brown, hazel, amber, or some other color. A well-bred, true hybrid red Labradoodle will always inherit dark brown eyes and a black nose. The Australian Labradoodle Association of America has some great pictures that show the different eye and coat colors that Labradoodle dogs can inherit. Hybrid dog breeding is not a new science. Nearly every purebred dog breed we know and love was originally a hybrid one! In the case of the Labradoodle hybrid dog, this influence comes from the Standard Poodle and Labradoodle Retriever. This is why it is so important to meet and interact with both parent dogs before making a commitment to a puppy from a particular litter. Luckily, both Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers are great family dogs who are good with children and incredibly smart, loyal and people-focused. This is one primary reason why the Labradoodle has become such a popular choice! Red Labradoodle Health At the time of publication, there is no research suggesting that Labradoodle health is influenced by coat color. There is a genetic screening test for this. The test can determine whether a Labradoodle puppy is a non-carrier not at risk , a carrier not at risk but can pass the gene along to puppies or at risk. The reason this is important is that an Australian Labradoodle who is a carrier or at risk may be more likely to develop genetic alopecia. A heritable hair loss condition that typically shows up between the ages of 4 months and 24 months. Alopecia related to coat color dilution causes breakage of the hair shaft and increases the potential for bacterial infections folliculitis. The best way to pick the healthiest puppy is to learn all you can about known genetic health issues in each parent dog and ensure your breeder has done all required pre-testing. Other recommended tests include cardiac, thyroid or sebaceous adenitis SA. Known Labrador Retriever genetic health issues Labrador Retrievers that will be bred should first be tested for hip and elbow dysplasia, exercise-induced collapse EIC , eye issues and D locus dilute DNA. Red Labradoodle Grooming Any Labradoodle dog may inherit one of three coat types: wool, fleece or hair. Wool Labradoodle coat type The wool coat type is the most like a typical Poodle coat — dense, wiry, curly and mostly non-shedding. This coat type is the most difficult to maintain because shed hair can quickly cause tangles and mats. Expect plenty of at-home and professional brushing and grooming! Fleece Labradoodle coat type The fleece coat type gets its name from its feel — silky with soft waves or curls. This type may not shed or shed seasonally. This coat type can be looked after fairly easily at home with regular brushing and clipping to keep hair out of the eyes, ears, paw pads and private areas. Hair Labradoodle coat type The hair coat type is longer and straighter and more like a traditional Labrador Retriever coat. This coat will shed, emit an odor and could trigger allergies in those sensitive. Regular brushing will also be essential to keep shedding manageable. What determines red Labradoodle coat type? Which coat type your red Labradoodle inherits will depend on each purebred parent dog. In general, F1 breeding programs will produce the greatest variation in coat types in a litter. Different Labradoodle breeding program types Different Labradoodle breeders may choose to specialize in earlier, later or multi-generation Labradoodle breeding programs. Early-generation breeding programs are called F1 or F1b programs. These will breed by crossing a purebred Standard Poodle with a purebred Labrador. While F1b programs will cross a purebred Poodle with a hybrid Labradoodle. There is now also an F1bb breeding program that crosses a purebred Standard Poodle with an F1b Labradoodle. These puppies have a very high likelihood of having a non-shedding adult coat. Later-generation breeding programs are called F2 or F2b. These programs will cross two early-generation hybrid Labradoodle parent dogs. Multi-generation breed programs are called F3. This type of breeding program crosses later-generation hybrid Labradoodle parent dogs. Labradoodle coat type genetic test Knowing what type of breeding program your puppy comes from impacts coat type, which is one of the main reasons why Labradoodles have become so popular. White paws, bib, and tail tip set against another color. Large areas of white on another color. A second color on the eyebrows, muzzle, chest and paws. Each individual hair has bands of light and dark pigment. Narrow irregular stripes of color. Finally, some red Aussie Labradoodles carry the merle gene and have red merle coats. Red Labradoodles can be anything from bright gold to a deep rusty hue, via several shades of warm apricots and marmalades. A caramel Labradoodle can be many shades, from a warm cream color, through to a bright fiery red. Again, the answer is in their eyes and on their nose. Caramel Labradoodles have light hazel eyes, and a brown nose. If that all sounds strange, then the next section will make it all make sense! All Labradoodles also carry a set of genetic instructions to make either black or brown pigment. But not both. So: Labradoodle puppies who make yellow pigment and black pigment are red. And Labradoodle puppies who make yellow pigment and brown pigment are caramel. In either case, the exact shade of their fur varies depending on a range of other genes as well. But the color of their nose always reveals whether their coat is black-based or brown-based, and therefore whether they should properly be described as red, or caramel. Red and white Australian Labradoodle dogs Red Australian Labradoodle puppies with white patches of fur also carry White Spotting genes. There is thought to be a series of White Spotting genes. Alternative options in the series are responsible for white trim markings, particolor white markings, and extreme white markings. Red Australian Labradoodle Temperament So there are some pretty clever genes controlling Labradoodle coat color, but do any of them affect their personality too? The answer to this is apparently not. There is no genetic evidence or even anecdotal evidence that Australian Labradoodle color affects their temperament. In the Labrador Retriever breed, black coats are closely associated with highly skilled working dogs, and yellow coats are closely associated with calm service dogs. This is due to breeders pursuing both of these traits simultaneously, not because they are somehow connected at a genetic level. But, it has always been a trend rather than a rule, and most Australian Doodles are now so many generations removed from their closest pedigree Labrador relative, this trend has been lost. Aussie Doodles are active, friendly, smart and affectionate. They enjoy human company, playtime, and training games. Early socialisation. And meeting their need for physical activity and mental stimulation.
