Many a dog owner has played with their pup until they themself were exhausted and, much to their chagrin, their pup was still raring for more. As puppies, this can be the same for English Bulldogs but, as a brachycephalic breed, they do have their limits. This especially goes for activities like running and jogging. Similar to all breeds of dogs, English bulldogs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. When it comes to running and jogging, however, they do have their limits due to several factors. Yes, they can run, or jog, by your side, but for very short distances and under the right circumstances. They are also prone to joint problems, especially their knees and hips, and running or jogging puts a lot more pressure on these joints and can hurt them even under normal conditions. Most English bulldog experts agree that they should only be allowed to run around for 30 to 40 minutes, and less on a hot, humid day. More than this and you risk that they will dangerously overheat, have difficulty catching their breath and cause damage to their joints, including their hips and knees. There are exceptions to the rule, of course. If your English bullie buddy is a fully-grown adult with minimum health problems and the temperature outside is moderate they may be able to run around a bit longer without any risks. This would be something that you, as their dutiful and loving owner, would need to evaluate and decide on your own. This is a question that must be answered on an individual basis. That being said, 30 to 40 minutes is the advised amount of time to exercise your furry buddy so, for example, if you want to take them on a short jog or run at a moderate to slow speed simply make sure that you go as far as will get you back to your home in 30 to 40 minutes. Weather is also a factor when running or jogging with your English bullie. Yes, it definitely can be, unfortunately. These are malformations of the hip and elbow joint that can make it difficult for English bulldogs to walk and move around, let alone run or jog. If your English bullie already has these problems running and jogging will undoubtedly worsen them. Furthermore, as they get older more severe joint problems can arise as well, such as degenerative spine disease. Running and jogging can exacerbate these problems significantly, causing much pain and discomfort for your beloved pooch and the possibility of expensive veterinary visits too. Like everything else we talked about this depends on several factors. What you need to consider is that English bulldogs go through several growth phases during their first year of life. If they are allowed to run or jog indiscriminately, it can cause permanent damage to many of their joints and lead to lifelong problems and pain. That includes their knees, hips, shoulders and other joints. Their heart and lungs are also developing and running or jogging can have a detrimental effect on these vital organs too. Which is worse? That being said, we recommend not jogging or running with your English bulldog or, at most, only engaging in this activity once in a while and only if your buddy is an adult in good health. There are many different activities that your English bulldog boo can do with you safely and still have a fun time. Here are a few toys that you can use to play with your bulldog bud and help them get their daily dose of exercise. These are great for tugs-of-war and fetching! American bulldogs less so, however, as American bullies are larger with longer legs and somewhat fewer overall health problems than both their English and French counterparts. I recently reserved an English bulldog puppy. He was born 4 days premature by C-Section and has 7 other littermates. His mother is a red and white, kc registered family pet and his father is a kc registered red and white stud dog who participates in shows. My puppy opened his eyes around 2 weeks old and started walking around 3 weeks old. Fast forward to now, he is 6 weeks old tomorrow. When we saw a video of him walking at 3 weeks old, he seemed to have some weakness in his back legs but we passed it off as normal because he had only just started trying to walk. His siblings seem to have some leg issues too. Another pup in the same video had one leg that seemed to go out to the side, as if stretching. They walk on wooden floor and the grass outside. They are being weaned onto puppy food and are drinking from a bowl etc. Everything else with my puppy is fine, his eating and drinking habits, his toiletry habits etc. They are all booked in to see the vet on Monday and then I am viewing my pup on Tuesday. Sort of like the reaction an elderly Epsom couple had last month after eight dogs, half of them belonging to Levesque, all unleashed, charged them on a neighborhood street, leaving Arthur and Anne Bouchard with puncture wounds on their skin, blood on their clothes and worry in their thoughts. He motioned Levesque to move over, away from the prying local media, seeking a private conference 20 yards down the street. She wants the nasty notes circulating on social media, portraying her as the owner of devil dogs, to stop. It just turned into a great big fiasco where dogs got hurt and people got hurt, and it was because of us not having the dogs on leashes. Passler is friends with Levesque and her partner of 16 years, Anne-Marie Saunders, their common love for dogs creating a powerful bond. They regularly walk their dogs, mostly boxers, together. Events only got worse after that first episode. Levesque said she stayed behind to comfort the young woman while Passler proceeded down River Road. Levesque arrived shortly after the damage had been done. Passler, who received his summons last week as well, declined to comment. The Bouchards in a recent interview said they had just started their walk, with Molly, their golden retriever. Their recollection was frightening and confirmed by a neighbor, Dan Prescott. Essentially, Anne and Arthur were run down from behind, with Arthur covering Molly on the ground and punching at the boxers, Anne standing, screaming and kicking at the pack of canines. Prescott raced from his house with a pair of oak sticks. It was a wolf pack. Arthur suffered several puncture wounds, including one that needed a butterfly stitch. Anne suffered a puncture wound on her hand. And two friends, both passionate dog lovers, were forced to look hard at themselves. The police held them accountable. I look for control of the dogs, and this person did not have control of his dogs. She was eager to defend her dogs. She defended her decision not to leash the dogs after the first confrontation last month, saying she had leashes with her in a bag and, besides, the dogs had always been well behaved. She wanted to set the record straight that her dogs were not pitbulls, as some in town had thought. She said they love meeting snowmobilers on the trail, love to swim, love to run and play. She was right. They wagged their stubby boxer tails and competed for attention, never revealing a dangerous side. Nevertheless, Levesque lowered her defensive shield and acknowledged that the only thing that really mattered in this case was a simple law, a statute, created to prevent injury. Can be pricy. Even More expensive if buying ready and frozen. Takes freezer space Raw Disclaimer I am a little bias towards raw food. I used to own a pet food store specializing in raw food for cats and dogs and I have been feeding my own Pugs raw food for over twelve years. Obviously, I am very happy with the raw diet and its outcomes as switching to dry food would have been easy and cheap. I believe it is the better choice for myself and my dogs. I believe I have presented the facts fairly objectively as far as the other feeding options go. There is no standard or way to measure what natural is and what the added value of it is other then the origin of it. Natural color could come from some secretion of an insect. Special Needs Puppies These little ones need the most nutritious and high-quality food you can find. If you want to find an economic way to feed your dog, please do it later in his life. Allergies Pugs are relatively sensitive to allergies. In some cases, this is due to an external source such as home detergents, but more often than not it has to do with their diet. There are a few brands that you can try with low, or no grain. If you are feeding your pug home cooked food or a raw diet, taking the carbs and grain out would be easy. Our Pugs were and are on a raw diet from day one and we never had any issues with allergies, except for one time. We started noticing that Preston had pinkish skin around his paws and around the nose fold. Since we owned a pet food store specializing in raw food, at the time convenient, I know we tried different types of meats, but nothing helped. It took us some time to realize the cause. We had our baby daughter at the time, and since she was very close and intimate with Preston, and he was eating raw, we made sure to wipe his mouth and feet with baby wipes after every meal. The baby wipes were the culprits. We switched them both to hypo-allergenic wipes and the skin went back to normal… Hip Dysplasia Pugs are ranked as one of the breeds with the highest chances of suffering from Hip Dysplasia. This can lead to trouble in walking and running and arthritis may follow as well. If your Pug is suffering from Hip Dysplasia to any extent you may want to either supplement their diet with Chondroitin and Glucosamine or to choose a brand that is made for joint support. Vets and nutrition. Having said that, if I needed nutritional advice, I would go to a nutritionist and not to my Doctor. The nutrition training vets get in many schools is provided by agents of the commercial food companies who are bias at best. Skipping meals Dogs will sometimes skip a meal. It is natural for them as food is not something that was always available on daily base. It is not typical for Pugs but it may happen. If it happens it will probably be a one meal deal. If your Pug misses a few meals in a row you may want to consult a vet. Treats and snacks I try and think of treats and snacks the same way I think of candy for my daughters. If the amount of treats your Pug is rivals the actual food, in quantity, you should reconsider or at least re calculate it. If you are using kibble both at meals and as treats for training, and your stubborn Pug ends up consuming a lot of treats, just take it off the next meal. The same goes for snacks. They should be a part of the total daily feeding and not extra. How long can a pug go without eating? An adult Pug can probably survive many days without food, but no Pug would stand for it. Unless your Pug has a medical condition, he will surely let you know he is hungry. Do make sure that your Pug is not deprived of fresh drinking water at all times. More so if the weather is hot and if he is on a dry food diet and has no other source of hydration. What if my Pug is overweight? Pugs love to eat and have a tendency to eat too much. A chubby Pug is very cute, but at some point, it becomes a health issue. Overweight Pugs may suffer from a wide range of conditions and or aggravate others. All of our guardians live very close to us and we give them all the support they need. Little did he know that he was the beginning of a wonderful breed of dogs. Sultan was the first recognized Labradoodle. For over twenty years Labradoodles have made excellent service dogs as well as family pets. They have great personalities, are very smart and easily trained. They have also given severe allergy sufferers a new alternative, allowing many of them the ability to own and enjoy a dog of their own for the first time. Hybrid vigor is the phenomenon that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. A very good family pet, yet not always allergy friendly. Most first generation dogs shed to some degree. First generation backcross Labradoodles F1b are the result of breeding a first generation F1 Labradoodle back to a Poodle. This results in a much more allergy friendly coat. F1b Labradoodles are no-to-low shed dogs. Multi-Gen Labradoodles are the result of breeding a higher generation Labradoodle to another higher generation Labradoodle. They are often linked with goldendoodles, which are a similar crossbreed created by mixing a golden retriever with a poodle. Labradoodles have been around since at least the s in the United States and began to appear in films shortly thereafter. While Labrador retrievers have always been popular service dogs because of their gentle nature and trainability, they are infamous shedders, which could be problematic. Poodles are also highly intelligent, so the hope was this crossbreed would create the perfect service dog. As we have already suggested, Labradoodles were bred in the hopes of creating a service dog that would shed less profusely than popular service dogs such as Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers. Both of these breeds are already considered excellent as service dogs. They are highly intelligent and also eager to please, which means they are highly trainable rather than being headstrong. They have a gentle personality, so they bond with people quickly and get along well with other people and strangers. This means that in addition to being well-suited to complete the tasks required of service dogs, they also have the right temperament to be in public places and around strangers. The big problem with these types of retrievers? They shed—a lot—as anyone with either of these breeds at home will tell you. What Are Labradoodle Coats Like? There are generally three types of coat that you get with a Labradoodle: wool, fleece, or hair. Wool Labradoodles with a wool coat are often called curly Labradoodles, and they are the ones that most look like they have the coat of their poodle parent. The curls vary in tightness, but they are generally tight enough that they are low shedding, with any hair they let go of getting caught up in their coat. These dogs need lots of grooming, and need to be brushed preferably on a daily basis to remove excessive hair. Nevertheless, these are the best types of Labradoodles for anyone with an allergy. Fleece Labradoodles with a fleece coat are often referred to as shaggy, which is probably the most common type of Labradoodle coat. The curls within the fleece are wavy, but vary from a modest wave to a fairly tight curl. The coat is low shedding, but these dogs do still shed—though much less profusely than you would expect from a Labrador. Hair This is the least common coat type among Labradoodles and looks a lot like the straight-haired coats of purebred Labrador retrievers but a bit scruffier. They also tend to shed just as much as purebred Labs. This type of coat is not always readily noticeable on a puppy Labradoodle, and will only start to become apparent when they get to about 12 weeks of age. Pups with these coats only tend to result from first-generation mixes of Labradors and poodles. Are Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? Even if you get yourself a Labradoodle with a nice wool coat, it might be a stretch to call them hypoallergenic. All dogs shed their hair just like all humans and will release some of the allergy-causing dander as they shed. But some dogs, such as poodles, have coats that shed much less and leave less dander lying around. The hair is caught up in their coat and has to be brushed out. So, while dogs with these coats are definitely better for people with allergies, they are not technically hypoallergenic. Brushing How often you need to brush your Labradoodle depends on what type of hair they have and also whether they stay outside or they are an inside dog. When you do brush them, brush to the skin, working from under the coat. Work from the feet up to the body and the tail to the head. Brush in the directions of the hair, starting with small amounts and adding small amounts of the coat as you stroke. The hair actually acts as insulation for these dogs, and if you remove it, you can end up letting them overheat rather than cooling them down. Around the head, you will probably want to cut the hair down to around five to 10 centimeters, leaving it with a full coat on top of the head and shoulders. Keep a round shape around the ears, blending in. The hair around the mouth and nose should be cut into a neat circular shape, and the eyebrows trimmed at a sloping degree angle from the forehead down to the cheeks. Make sure to leave enough brow to create a visor long enough to reach down the bridge between the eyes. On the legs, cut down to between 10 and 15 centimeters, making a kind of tube covering the roof straight down rather than following the curve of the ankle. But do make sure that the hair comfortably clears the ground. Trim the tail hair to match the legs. If you do want to shave, then focus on the under ear area, going from ear to ear cutting a chin strap. You can also shave them from groin to sternum, their inner rear legs, armpits, and potty patch. Any cuts and pulls can traumatize your dog and cause them to become very difficult at grooming time.
