Our Frenchie Claude loves getting out and about, so we go for walks twice a day. When we first started leash training, he was extremely stubborn and sometimes would even refuse to walk at all. On other times he would pull and act so manic that we struggled to control him. However, once we had learned how to leash train our French Bulldog life got a lot more enjoyable. I actually looked forward to going to the park rather than viewing our walks with trepidation. French Bulldog puppy leash training I am going to assume you already have a leash or harness. Some owners prefer harnesses that fit around the body, others a collar and leash combination. With the guide below, the aim is to understand how to leash train a stubborn French Bulldog from a puppy so that he will follow you or walk by your side at all times. He should not be refusing to walk or pulling you in all sorts of different directions. And before you start; patience, repetition, and consistency are the three key elements to leash training your Frenchie. Get your Frenchie puppy used to the leash indoors The first aspect of leash training is getting your Frenchie puppy used to having a collar or harness on. Handy Hint: If your Frenchie is frightened and starts to get anxious, stop the leash training immediately. A scared dog is very hard to train, so for leave it for a couple of hours. Your job here is to use distraction and praise to get them used to wearing it. We found that the best way was to put the leash and collar on Claude and then play with him in the house. This lets him associate having a leash on as being a positive and fun thing to do. As he walks towards you, reward him with a treat. Pick the right time for your first outdoor leash walk As with any dog training, sometimes the timing is key. A Frenchie who is excited and full of energy is going to be far harder to train. A game of indoor fetch is a great way to tire a high energy dog out, and help them focus later on the leash walk. Try leash training outdoors for the first time Outdoors will be far more challenging mainly due to there being plenty of distractions. The aim is to get your French Bulldog puppy paying you constant attention when they are on the leash. Do the same thing as you did indoors. To keep them focussed on you only, make constant direction changes with verbal commands and treats. This can include zig zagging, or stopping, turning, and heading back in the other direction. Keep it random and keep it interesting. Make things fun when they get stubborn French Bulldogs love to play see what I mean here and you can use this in your leash training to great effect. If your French Bulldog puppy gets difficult on the leash, wants to go in different direction, or completely refuses to walk, then make things fun. The easiest way to do this is to start acting excitable; quicken your step, run a little, wave your arms, make silly noises — this will intrigue your stubborn Frenchie and in most cases they will follow you to see what the fuss is all about. Dealing with scary noises including cars One of the most important factors in leash training is getting your Frenchie used to the scary sights, sounds, and smells of the great outdoors. Leash training is a great opportunity to expose your French Bulldog to things it needs to get used to. The same goes for other dogs, wildlife, and loud noises. Claude is now fully leash trained and loves his walks. One of the biggest things we had to get Claude used to was cars driving past us. Our Frenchie would cower and be scared. It was the repetition, reassurance, reward, and continual exposure to traffic noise that got him over this fear — it did take 3 months though for him to be completely at ease with road traffic noise. Handy Hint: Find out why I recommend you use Frenchie harnesses and not collars particularly when training young Frenchie puppies. It takes time and patience. Here are two common problems with a suggested solution. Pulling on the leash For the first 12 months of taking Claude for walks he was a huge puller. Frenchies are excitable, and ours would pull because he knew he was going to be off the leash at the park once we got to our destination. Handy Hint: Read my views on whether Frenchies are good to walk without a leash and what you need to be careful of before doing so. It took some time for it to stop and also coincided with him maturing from puppy to adult. During the first year of leash training, I would always stand dead still as soon as he started pulling. Once I came to a stop, I would call him back to me, get him to sit, and reward him with a treat. I would then start walking again. If he started pulling, I would repeat the process. Over time our Frenchie learned not to pull. Chewing on the leash Almost every puppy will chew on the leash. This could not be further from the truth! Frenchies can develop bad habits at any age, and the older they do, the harder those habits are to shift! But a word of warning; French Bulldog leash training is much harder than people think. When you have a young puppy, they grow very quickly. They will get quicker and stronger as they get older meaning they will end up walking a lot faster than you. It could take a couple of months to get it right, but it will be worthwhile. Rolling over Another way that your Frenchie may show you affection and love is by rolling over for a good belly rub. When he does this I see it as a sign of him being submissive so the other dog knows that he is safe and ready to play with. Sleeping close to you Some owners prefer to train their dogs to sleep on the floor or even in another room, but if your Frenchie is trying to join you on the bed or prefers sleeping in your room, this is another massive indicator that they love you. You know a French Bulldog loves you when they want to get up close and personal and fall asleep with you. As an extension of this, being able to nod off easily around you and going out of their way to sleep near you means they not only trust you and view you as someone safe, but it also shows that they view you as family. During the last few weeks mom has done an amazing job of getting her babies strong and their mobility will have come on leaps and bounds well not quite yet but by 3 weeks of age your German Shepherd puppy will begin to trotter around. Especially those with large litters will start introducing some solid foods. This helps relieve some of the pressure for the devoted German Shepherd mom. As the pups start getting more confident on their feet they will be running around and playing enthusiastically. At 4 weeks old they will begin to wag their adorable little tails. They will be able to show more control of their bowel movements as they take themselves away from their brothers and sisters to perform their business. When mom returns to her babies the litter will noisily greet her. Around 4 weeks of age your puppies will need to be wormed again. From this week onwards human interaction is very important in order to form relationships with people. Including different noises and smells. This exposure will ensure your German Shepherd puppy turns into a confident, friendly individual. Mom will also be doing an important job of teaching her puppies to not bite too hard. By 5 weeks old German Shepherd puppies will be eating a lot of solid foods, several times throughout the day. We would not recommend this as the puppies will miss out on continued bite inhibition training from their siblings and mother. This can result in a puppy who bites too hard which can be challenging to manage as they get older. In the USA your puppy will be due their first combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 6 weeks old. This vaccine helps to immunizes your puppy against hepatitis, parvo, distemper, parainfluenza and coronavirus. Most puppies will also need to be wormed again at 6 weeks old. Their last week together will consist of plenty of socialization and playing. Most breeders will arrange a 7 week health check up with the vet to make sure your bundle of fluff is fit and healthy to go to their new home. In the UK some breeders will arrange for the pups first 8 week vaccination to take place during this check. Although some vets advise against it. By the end of this week German Shepherd puppies are ready to leave their mothers and move into their new homes for good. The week you get to take your new puppy home. This will be a very exciting time, but you may also be feeling a bit nervous. There will be some challenged along the way for new puppy owners and your puppy will take some time to adjust to life without its mother and siblings. In the UK the first combined vaccination will help to immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. The first puppy injection in the UK typically will happen between 8 and 10 weeks. Some breeders would have trained the puppies to poop and pee on newspapers or puppy pads. From the moment you get them home it is important to show your German Shepherd puppy where to pee and poop. Puppies naturally like to pee where they have done so before so to avoid building history of peeing in your home is best if you can to avoid it. The more you can avoid accidents from happening as much as possible from the start the faster the puppy training process should be. The most successful way to potty train is to reward success and ignore accidents. Just clean them up quickly and thoroughly. Your puppy will love nothing more than being praised. After a hard day of play the peace and quiet of a crate will enable your pup to have a well-deserved nap. If your German Shepherd puppy does need to go to the toilet in the night make sure you keep it short and to a minimum. Establishing a daily routine is the best way to get your German Shepherd puppy to sleep through the night. Part of this schedule will involve mealtimes. Your 9 week old puppy will need four meals a day. Split these up throughout the day and try to stick to similar times. This is to stop encouraging your puppy to wake up earlier and earlier because they associate waking with food. You should always reward your puppy either vocally, with a favourite toy or treats for good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour. Puppies and dogs want to be praised so they respond very well to positive encouragement. Punishing puppies and dogs may have a short term positive effect on their behaviour but long term you could be setting them up to fail. It is very important to socialise and expose your puppy to other humans, dogs and different scenarios whilst they are young. This maybe hard before your puppy has had all its vaccines however getting many different people to come and visit you at your home will enable them to get used to visitors. Before their full vaccinations you can also, you can take you German Shepherd puppy out and about with you to expose them to the outside world as long as you can carry them. If you live in the USA, your puppy will be due their second combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 9 weeks old. In the USA a minimum of three sets of the combined vaccine are required for your puppy. Although you cannot put your puppy down outside until after their final vaccination. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. This is great time for you to introduce them to the big wide world and develop their social skills which you have already been building the foundations. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can. This will help your German Shepherd puppy to grown into a confident well-rounded dog. At 3 months old your German Shepherd will go down from four daily meals to three. These three portions will be larger than what they are used to which may cause stomach upset. If your German Shepherd puppy does get an upset stomach, try going back to four smaller meals for a couple of days and they try the three larger portions again. This can be a challenging time as your adorable German Shepherd puppy turns into a furry crocodile. Luckily the teething stage is only a phase as with human babies and short lived. In most cases your puppy biting should stop around when they are around 7 months old and have their adult teeth. She will need a quality puppy food, house training, attention to grooming and exercise. Step 1 Provide her with a quality puppy food. You can find high quality puppy food at pet stores along with the adult food. She needs a balanced food high in protein for her body function and continued growth. Carbohydrates are also important for all that poodle energy. Because poodles are prone to bloat and skin irritation, stay away from foods containing wheat, corn and soy. Avoid byproducts, such as necks, organs, stomach lining, bones and feathers. Kibbles are a good choice to control plaque buildup, but wet puppy food provides additional water, an important nutrient. Both are fine to use separately or together. Feed your toy poodle pup three to four times a day since her stomach is small and cannot handle large amounts of food in one feeding. Step 2 Use a leash for potty training. Poodles are not difficult to housebreak because they are intelligent and easy to train. Begin by putting her on a leash and then taking her to the door. She will soon learn to go to the door when she needs to go out. Get in a habit of taking her to the same spot outside. This intelligent pup will eventually return to the spot on her own. Be consistent and take her out the first thing in the morning, after napping, after each feeding and before bedtime. Don't scold her if she has an accident. If you catch her in the act, take her outside immediately and praise her when she relieves herself. If you decide to use a puppy pad instead of going outdoors, walk her to the pad each time. Accidents are rare, if you are consistent. Step 3 Groom her consistently. Brush your pup every other day. Your poodle's hair can tangle easily and it grows quickly. Clean her ears once a week. Pull out the hair in the ear canal gently and wipe the outer ear with a moistened cloth. Take her to a professional groomer for her regular clippings, ear cleaning and toenail care.
