However, we argue that there does not need to be such an extreme change of diet as some vets recommend. Overfeeding Most dogs and especially puppies will get loose stools when they are over-fed. Usually, stools caused by overeating look like cow patties. When we have a female nursing a large litter of puppies, we intentionally feed them far more than they are accustomed to in order to keep weight on them. All of them will have cow patty type poop while we are heavily feeding them. Their poop returns to normal when the feeding returns to normal. Even adults struggle to maintain normal poop when they are overfed. Overfeeding puppies will have an even stronger impact. We have had families with our puppies call us reporting that their puppy has begun having chronically loose poop. The first questions we ask are about what the poop looks like and the weight of the puppy. If the puppy is over the weight ranges in our growth chart , the puppy is having loose cow patty looking poop, and the puppy is acting normally in other ways, the culprit is almost certainly too much food. There are too many breeds to keep up with normal weights for all breeds at all ages. Check with a reputable breeder who knows your breed to determine normal growth rates. Also, consider that various lines within breeds can grow at different rates. Another very important fact to keep in mind is that unlike people, dogs will grow too fast before they will grow fat. Dogs especially puppies do not always look fat when they are being overfed. In fact, unless they are grossly overfed, they usually appear normal to the untrained eye until they are an adult. Not Enough Fiber A second very common cause of frequent loose poop and diarrhea is an inadequate amount of fiber in the dog food. Many puppies cannot tolerate rich foods especially grain-free foods until they are older and have more mature digestive systems. Many puppies and dogs need SOME grain in their food in order to maintain firm poop for life. Give about two tablespoons for a pound Golden Retriever. Puppies and 5 Star High Protein Dog Foods In our early years of breeding, we were committed to feeding the very best puppy foods to our puppies. We still have the same commitment. However, we have learned quite a bit about which foods actually are the very best. Anyway, for several years, we started our puppies on several of the most expensive foods on the market. Then, we used Acana before they changed their formula and moved their facility out of Canada. With almost every litter, there was at least one puppy that struggled with loose stools. To combat the stools, we added fiber either rice or pumpkin and the problem resolved. We decided to try a food with a little grain. We were pleasantly surprised that our puppies did much better on foods with some grain. Higher levels of meat protein are healthy for dogs. Dogs were created to eat meat. The higher the protein, the more loose poop you will see. However, higher amounts of meat protein also make a food more nutritious. You must feed the right balance of protein and fiber. When we started feeding TLC to our puppies, we had virtually no loose stools except for the very occasional bacterial overgrowth that is discussed in the next section. If changing foods, make sure you scroll down to read the section on how to change foods. Having firm poop is important. However, it is even more important that you not sacrifice on good nutrition. They are very similar. There are only two differences between the puppy food and the adult food. The first difference is that the puppy food has a little bit more protein and a little less grain. The second difference is that the adult food has glucosamine. For the purposes of controlling loose stools, the additional grain in the dog food is all that matters. These foods fix the loose poop because they are low in protein and high in fiber. These veterinary diets are fortified with the necessary vitamins because most of the primary ingredients have little intrinsic nutritional value of their own. Sensitive stomach foods can be a good temporary fix, but there is no reason to leave most puppies or dogs on such a food for life. Look for a food with SOME grain for the long term. However, it is highly unlikely that it is necessary to keep your dog on an extremely high fiber, low protein specialty diet for life. Dogs that are fed the same food on a daily basis will probably not have the correct kind of good bacteria in their gut to properly digest a brand new food. They need to be acclimated to the new food gradually over a few days instead of having an abrupt change. Adding probiotics will also make the food change go smoother and quicker if need be. Take it slow. Bacterial Overgrowth A third common cause of puppy diarrhea is bacterial overgrowth. All puppies and dogs have bacteria in their digestive track to some degree. A good immune system will keep these bacteria under control. However, bacteria will tend to overgrow in puppies and even in dogs in at least three different common conditions: when a dog is under stress, when he is habitually eating junk, or when he has a poor or immature immune system. Unfortunately, puppies often meet all three conditions, especially when first changing homes. Stress A very common cause of bacterial overgrowth is stress. Some of our dogs have had this type diarrhea occasionally when they first start going to dog shows. However, once we return home, the diarrhea goes away on its own and the more shows dogs go to the less likely they are to experience the accompanying diarrhea. It is also common for some puppies to experience diarrhea when first changing homes. Our socialization program at Summer Brook is so intensive that we have very few that experience diarrhea shortly after leaving us. If a strange dog nips or bites your puppy, or even plays too roughly, this can cause a fear scar that will recur in the future. Often in the form of aggression towards other dogs. Or, take them to see a busy road or loud school yard, but start very far away, gradually moving closer as long as you know your pup is happy with the sounds. But, you can provide lots of love, soothing words, pats, cuddles, treats, and the reassurance that your puppy can always turn to you for comfort and protection. Introduce the Food Dish The best food dish for a puppy this age is a flat, shallow pan. You have to balance the needs of a whole family of dogs and help them transition from being fully dependent on their mother to be ready for adoption. Weaning is a big—and messy—part of that process, but seeing your puppies digging into a bowl of food is a great reward. Puppies do a lot of growing in their first year, especially in the very first weeks and months. This usually happens around the 3 to 4 week mark. Now, even though the baby teeth could indicate that your new puppy should be able to switch to dry kibble, it might not be that simple. Obviously, soaking the dry kibble will make it all soft and mushy, making it so much easier to consume. Soaking puppy food is very simple and straightforward. Simply measure the correct amount of puppy kibble in a bowl check the feeding instructions on the packaging! About the timing — usually 10 to 20 minutes should be perfectly enough to transform the dry kibble into a soft mush. Although it might be tempting to soak the kibble longer, we strongly advise against it. Keep in mind that moisture is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. So, if you leave the kibble soaking for hours on end, it might do more harm than good. Not to mention, flies and other insects will surely find their way to the soaked puppy food if you leave it out for too long. However, we do recommend you give it a good stir before serving it to your pup. This will make it super mushy and soft, and give it a nice, smooth consistency. Make sure that the food is warm enough, but not uncomfortably hot. Moreover, since puppies are still learning good eating habits, you might want to serve their soaked kibble on a flat plate or surface. High rimmed bowls can prove to be quite an obstacle for small puppies, so make sure that the food is accessible for your little pal. Overfeeding can quickly lead to excessive weight gain, which in turn paves the way for a whole range of health issues. Similarly, underfeeding will leave your pup malnourished, and can cause a different set of health and developmental problems. How much food your puppy needs is based on their age, size, and estimated adult weight. The easiest way to do this is by checking the feeding instructions and calories on the back of your dry kibble packaging. As we mentioned earlier, soaking dry kibble during the transitional period is super helpful for a variety of reasons, one of them being the digestive process. If a puppy has so far only consumed a liquid diet, immediately switching to dry kibble may cause some issues. On the other hand, it might not. It really is individual and what works for one pup might not work for another. When to Stop Soaking Puppy Food? So, when to stop soaking puppy food? When can puppies eat dry food? When to stop soaking puppy food varies from pup to pup, and even puppies from the same litter may adjust at a different pace. Generally, we can expect puppies to be fully weaned by 6 weeks of age or slightly later. Usually by the 8 week mark, puppies should have all of their baby teeth, and they potentially could eat only dry food. Based on this timeline, puppies can eat soaked food for up to 12 weeks of age. This will give the puppy plenty of time to be fully weaned and also adjust to eating dry kibble. Of course, there are also instances when your puppy gets home sooner than that. We also strongly recommend you soak the dry puppy food to make it more appealing, and easier to eat and digest. At 6 weeks old, your puppy can already eat according to scheduled mealtimes, around 5 to 6 meals per day. From 8 to 12 weeks old, puppies should eat around 3 to 4 times a day. Around the 8 to 12 week mark you can also start transitioning your puppy from soaked food to dry kibble. Be sure to ask your breeder exactly the type of food your puppy has been eating so far, and continue to feed the exact same food at home. As with any dietary change, you want to make the transition as smooth and seamless as possible. The process for this is quite simple — once your puppy is fully weaned and only feeds on soaked kibble, you can start adding smaller amounts of water to the food each day. Before you know it, your puppy is inhaling all of its dry kibble with no problems. Still, keep in mind that the process from soaked food to dry kibble will take time, even up to several weeks. The key here is to transition your puppy from soaked to dry food as gradually as possible. On the other hand, if you do notice that your pup has a hard time adjusting to the texture this fast, you can reduce the water content over a longer period of time, around every days. Puppies can usually start eating dry food around 8 to 10 weeks of age. By 8 weeks old, puppies are generally fully weaned, and they should also have their full set of their baby teeth. It usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes to soak dry kibble into a nice, soft mush for a puppy. We recommend you soak only small portions of dry kibble at a time, the exact amount that your puppy will eat during the mealtime. For this reason, only soak one portion at a time, and feed it to your pup in the next 10 to 30 minutes. But, as a general rule of thumb, puppies are usually ready to switch to dry kibble around 8 to 10 weeks of age. If your puppy is still eating soaked kibble, be sure to gradually transition them from soaked food to dry kibble over a period of time. Patience does pay off, so be sure to give your pup as much time as necessary for them to get used to solid foods.
