There are several different methods you can use to make sure you are teaching your dog the absolute right ways to potty train them in the safest and easiest way possible. The great thing about French bulldogs is that they are a clean breed that does their best to avoid having accidents, so if you have a set training schedule your dog or puppy will be up to date with their training in only the matter of a few short weeks. The 5 steps and potty-training schedule The first thing you should do is set a regular schedule for your French bulldog puppy. This will help them know when to expect their time to go out. Step 1. Schedule regular and consistent potty breaks You should take your puppy out first in the morning when you both wake up, after playing for a long period of time, and after eating dinner and drinking from their bowl. This is how we did it, and how we got there in the end. Step 2. Watch for the signs that they need the toilet Once you get acquainted with your French bulldog, you will be able to see the oncoming signs of them having to go to the bathroom. Some of these warning signs are fairly obvious, such as pacing around the room in a circle, pacing back and forth from the same rooms, whining at you, barking loudly, sniffing around you, and staring you dead in the eye. Step 3. Take them to their potty-training pads or outside If your bulldog is exhibiting any of these signs, then you should immediately assume that going to the bathroom is their top priority and get them to the potty pads or outside. This is where puppy training pads come in — and I recommend the best ones lower down this page. Step 4. Step 5. Reward them for success Once your puppy has finished going to the toilet, you should reward them with a treat. This will positively reinforce the good behaviour and lead to quicker results. Items You Will Need for Potty Training To properly train your French bulldog puppy, there are certain items you should have that will make the process easier. Pet training puppy pads When we first brought Claude home, we used puppy pads in his crate. This works two-fold. Firstly, they are scented, but secondly you can use them as the area for them to relieve themselves on. You can buy pet training puppy pads on Amazon. Decent dog leash It almost goes without saying but will obviously need a leash so that you can walk the dog to the proper toilet location if going into an unsecured outdoor area. Dog treats for rewards You will also need treats to positively reinforce your puppy for going to the bathroom when you tell them to. Toys will also help to positively reinforce your puppy into thinking that they are doing good with their potty training. In the crate we placed the training pads in one half, with his bed to sleep on in the other half. We bought a larger crate view which crate we recommend that we needed for his size at the time, as knew we would need it still on certain occasions as he grew older. I would also recommend you equip yourself with cleaning rags and an enzymatic cleaner to rid your house of the unpleasant aroma. Further tips on potty training including the psychology! You really need to know your dog on a personal level and understand their mindset. The puppy may learn to hold their defecation in for a longer period of time so they can squeeze some more outdoors time with you. Claude is now successfully trained to go to the toilet outside. If you are not home with your puppy at points during the potty-training phase, it would be a good idea to make sure your French bulldog is put into a restricted area, but also making sure that they are comfortable and have enough room to move around freely. Like previously mentioned, French bulldogs are a mostly clean breed that will avoid going to the bathroom in certain areas, such as where they sleep every night. If you find that your new Frenchie has had an accident inside the house, make sure you clean the area fiercely and thoroughly to get the smell out. If the dog continues to smell that smell, they might think it is okay to go in that same spot in the future. If you find that your Frenchie has unleashed one of his loads inside your house, you should gather the poop up in a small bag and deposit it in the part of the yard that you want your dog to go in. Their nose will become accustomed to the smell in that particular area and they will have an instinct to go to the bathroom in that spot of the yard. To make sure your French bulldog knows which areas are acceptable for going to the bathroom and which ones are not, be sure to take your puppy to the same area for a significant length of time. Once your bulldog learns that said area is acceptable for going to the bathroom, you can move on to a different area. Your bulldog will learn to remember which areas area acceptable bathroom spots and which ones they should steer clear from. This can actually make them more nervous, and lead to even more mess. Not only will these behaviours scare your dog and ruin their relationship with you, but they will also hinder the potty-training process and they could be aggressive towards you. You should also avoid using any cleaners that come with a scent of ammonia. Urine contains high acidic amount of ammonia. If your puppy smells this, they will most likely use this area in the house as a spot for going to the bathroom. How long to potty train a French bulldog? This is where I want to set you some realistic expectation. Whilst we started training Claude to go outside to the toilet from day 1, it took us 6 months until he stopped having accidents inside. Yes, he was stilling using the training mats regularly indoors, but to be honest, I think we should have just avoided using those altogether, and just focussed on his outdoor routine. It took us around 6 months to potty train Claude the Frenchie puppy. It took him 6 months so up to his 9-month birthday before he was fully trained. Are French bulldog easy to potty train? Are French Bulldogs hard to potty train? It can be hard and will take time. Our personal experience of toilet training I remember taking Claude to puppy socialisation training at 8 months old, and him peeing on the floor in front of all the other puppies. I was like an embarrassed parent! And this was despite the fact all the other puppy breeds were the same age as him. He got there in the end though! How long can a French bulldog hold its pee? How long a Frenchie can hold its pee and bladder will very much depend on their age. For example, a fully-grown French Bulldog can hold its pee for around 8 to 10 hours. French Bulldog puppies can hold their pee for a maximum of 4 hours. They will be peeing a lot in your house until completely toilet trained. My French Bulldog is still not toilet trained This is a common problem by owners of adult French Bulldogs who are not toilet trained. If you cannot get your adult Frenchie to hold their pee and stop peeing indoors and have exhausted all of the advice in this guide, I would recommend you seek the support of a pet behaviour specialist. You can see several examples of our amazing Merle Bernedoodles below. Where does the merle gene come from and how it got in the poodle gene pool? I get this question all the time. I have done a lot of study of the merle gene in the poodle gene pool and believe that it was not caused by introducing another breed into the gene pool but, in fact, it is a mutation that occurred naturally. Merle is probably the most mis-understood and hotly debated dilution gene in the poodle. Many believe it must be a recessive gene because it doesn't affect the appearance of red, apricot and red or diluted colors such as blues and silvers. In addition, it can be hard to see or not evident at all on black and brown dogs cryptic. Not only is its appearance illusive to breeders but it has confused scientists and it is still not completely understood. The merle pattern has been studied many times and the last study released in emphatically stated that merle was caused by a mutation in the gene called SILV or PMEL.The research was believed to be so solid that tests were offered to breeders to identify Merle in their dogs. However, as of March the company who owned the patent for the test, Idexx, stopped offering tests as they discovered the scientists identified the wrong gene. SILV is not responsible for merle. The gene they decided was merle SILV actually turned out to be for a form of piebaldism- not merle. One theory is that piebaldism may be issue when connected to merle- or it may be piebaldism itself that is the issue. Another theory is "The Misidentification Theory. However, it is said - rightly so - that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. Then there is the "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This theory is actually a subcategory of the Misidentification Theory. Merle is what is called a "modifier. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on. The final theory I have is that that merles have been in the breed and that mere is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed, and that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. When I called AKC to register Chuck and asked about the color code to give him they said to give him code and This refers to a a red and white dog with black markings. This leads me to believe that when looking at the color pedigree 5 or 10 generations back you would not know if the dog was actually a merle or a parti meaning merle could be in the pedigree without proper identification. Merle can affect all coat colors. The merle forms of brown and black are usually called "red" though this is not correct; red and merle are genetically different and "blue" as patches of blue are formed throughout the coat. Merle is a dilution gene just like the blue, chocolate in a traditional color but without the color of blue DNA. Merle has its own colours and DNA; a blue merle is a dog who has blue patches on its body, red and some are chocolate or "cookies and cream". Dogs who are recessive red can still be affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or, if the dog is a clear recessive red, are not visible at all. Combinations such as brindle merle exist, but are rare. In addition to altering base coat color, merle also modifies eye color and coloring on the nose and paw pads. The merle gene modifies the dark pigment in the eyes, occasionally changing dark eyes to blue, or part of the eye to be colored blue. Since merle causes random modifications, however, both dark-eyed, blue-eyed, and odd-colored eyes are possible. Color on paw pads and nose may be mottled pink and black. Color on the nose may be black, blue, or red. You can see a perfect example of a chocolate merle in our stud Chuck. Merle Bernedoodles What is a Merle Bernedoodle? What are the most common Merle patterns in Bernedoodles? How is a Merle Bernedoodle produced? Merle is a term used to describe the pattern of a dogs coat. Merle is a dilution gene, that is, it lightens whatever the coat color would otherwise have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat, but leaves patches of undiluted color scattered over the dog's body. Also, the lightening seems to work primarily on the black pigment in the coat. Merle refers to the pattern in the coat and is not a color as such. The white and gray patterns that appear on a black make them appear to have a blueish cast. These are called blue merles. Merle is a color combination in dogs' coats. Although most breeds that can have merle coats also typically have white markings such as around the neck, under the belly, and so on , and often tan points typically between the white and the darker parts of the coat , these are separate colors from the merle; some dogs do appear completely merled with no white or tan markings. Merle can also alter other colors and patterns besides the usual red or black. Utah Bernedoodles. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. Low maintenance coat with wave and considered minimal to no shed. F1b is a Bernedoodle bred with a Poodle. F1b Mini Bernedoodles will have a higher success rate for no shed, and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. We microchip puppies prior to going home. Microchipping is a very easy, affordable process that a veterinarian can easily do. Males tend to be larger than females, but beyond that, there is not a major difference between the genders. The differences are quite subtle, and both males and females make amazing pets. We think temperament is more important than gender when matching dogs to owners. If your Bernedoodle is very active outdoors, you will likely find a shorter clip easier to maintain. But many owners enjoy the look of them in a fuller coat. A curly coat is less likely to shed but more likely to become matted if not brushed regularly. Daily brushing will be required, as well as professional grooming every weeks. So be specific and show the groomer photos of how you want your dog to look. Also Avoid bathing your Bernedoodle too often, as it strips essential oils from the coat. There is no such thing as a fully-hypoallergenic dog; Bernedoodles tend to be allergy-friendly. Most people with allergies to dog dander i. Every Bernedoodle has a different coat. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy type coat that is low- to non-shedding. If you are allergic to dog saliva you will most likely be allergic to Bernedoodles. You will know if you are allergic to saliva if your skin will break out in hives when a dog licks you. We always suggest that if allergies are involved, customers should meet some Bernedoodles if they can. This has happened very rarely. Yes, you can find a copy of our contract here. We live on 30 acres with a pond, 20 acres of that is fenced in to give our females plenty of room for exercise and roaming, swimming, we keep them supplied with bones from the local butcher to keep them occupied for hours! We do have a kennel area, heated and cooled, where they spend the nights and for times we leave for a few hours. Our puppies are raised in our nursery area and brought into the house or to the front yard daily [weather permitting] for playtime and socialized by any of our 6 little girls:] they also have a doggy door for outside access. They will be up to date on shots and deworming, they will have a shot record, a vet certificate, a signed health contract, and a small food kit. Our puppies will range in coat types from curly to wavy.

They are very loyal, intelligent and love to be kept active, so can be easy to train. They suit very active households as they need a lot of exercise every day. They are great dogs for owners with a lot of experience and time as, like most dogs, they can get bored easily. Unfortunately, German Shepherds do have a range of health issues due to the way they have been bred, which can end up being costly to owners and cause serious problems for the dog. Common health problems in German Shepherds German Shepherds are great dogs for the right owners, but they are at risk of certain conditions and illnesses common with the breed. Making sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening can reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by some of these upsetting conditions. This means that these types of dog have been bred over many years to look a certain way, but that these changes to the way they look have started to cause them health problems. For German Shepherds, this is mostly due to the shape of their back legs and hips. There is a screening test for this. There is a screening test. Inherited eye diseases — including cataracts and multifocal retinal dysplasia. There are screening testing for these. Epilepsy — a brain disorder causing seizures. Pituitary dwarfism — a hormone deficiency which causes severe growth problems and reduces lifespan. Haemophilia A and B — bleeding disorders that stop blood from clotting and cause wounds to bleed more than they should. Screening tests are available. This list is not exhaustive, and there are many other conditions that German Shepherds have been shown to be prone to. German Shepherds and barking As with any dog, German Shepherds are likely to bark. Their main purpose was for herding and guarding so they can be quite vocal when people walk past or enter or exit the house, but how much noise they make will vary from dog to dog. Training and socialisation Regardless of the age of your German Shepherd when you adopt it, you need to have clear boundaries to help keep them safe and happy. As with all training — consistency is key! Everyone in the family needs to follow the same rules. German Shepherds are very loyal to their owners and can be protective of their family. They can have a strong guarding instinct, so careful training and socialisation will be needed to prevent any guarding or aggressive behaviours. As with any dog, your German Shepherd will need to be well socialised with people, other animals and different objects and environments from a young age. Try to keep the time your German Shepherd is alone to an absolute minimum as they thrive on company and will worry about you if you leave them too long. You should never leave any dog alone for longer than four hours. Exercise Be prepared — German Shepherds are very active dogs! They need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and occupied. This will also stop them from barking out of boredom or having a nibble on the furniture. Your German Shepherd will need a minimum of two hours of exercise every day. This should include walks and off-lead exercise in a safe area, with extra playtime and training on top to give them a good variety. You can find out how much exercise your dog needs , or even find exercises you can do together online. Our vets recommend spreading exercise across the day rather than trying to do two hours all in one go. German Shepherds are a great breed if you enjoy long walks and spending loads of time exploring outside. If there are times when you are unable to give them the exercise they need, then arranging for a relative, friend or dog-walker to come and help would be essential. Grooming Be prepared for a lot of shedding because German Shepherds have such thick coats! Ideally, you should give your German Shepherd a brush or comb down a few times a week to keep their coat looking healthy, prevent matting and reduce the build-up of dead hair especially if they have a longer coat. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet high standards. Set up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. White-coated German Shepherds were once banned from registration in their native Germany, but in the United States and Canada the coloration gained a following and a breed club was formed specifically for white German Shepherds, calling their variety the White Shepherd. The variety is recognised as a separate breed by the United Kennel Club. It descends from the American White Shepherds; the first stud dog of what was to become the breed was an American dog born in and imported to Switzerland. They are especially well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspects. Their coats are mostly bi-colored except for some points that have a third color tan. These tan markings are often found on the cheeks, above the eyes, on the sides of the chest, and the inner parts of the legs. They can follow different patterns, such as a full-coated color scheme with a little bit of white or a majority white coat with a tri piebald pattern.
