Post Views: .Stenchie Staffy French Bulldog Characteristics Both Staffies and French Bulldogs are sturdy dogs and together they create small to medium-sized dogs; their legs are short but their bodies are solid. One of the most distinctive features of the Staffy French Bulldog is its bat-like ears that are usually almost or fully erect on the top of their head; it gives them a unique and appealing look. In terms of grooming, the Staffy French is easy to maintain due to its short fur. Brushing once or twice a week will keep their coat glossy and looking healthy. Talking of health, the French Bulldog cross Staffy has two main health issues every owner should be aware of; congenital heart disease and hip dysplasia. If there are health issues with the French Bulldog parent, such as brachycephalic flattened face and short muzzle , this can also create other genetic health problems. They also make great family pets; their main aim is to please their owners. Socialising this hybrid dog from a young age is also advised, as their aggressive side can come out if not properly trained. Amy Jacks Amy has been writing for as long as she can remember.
Greetings from the Wysongs! As English Bulldog breeders , Mitch and Erica Wysong have dedicated themselves to a lifelong journey of changing the culture and societal pressures of poor breeding practices within the English Bulldog Community. Mitch and Erica believe in producing a healthy English Bulldog puppy first and foremost. Through years of research and development, Bruiser Bulldogs is leading a new movement away from the overdone, wrinkled bulldog that has been long plagued by health problems. By embracing a healthier, more athletic look they are able to ensure that each and every English Bulldog Puppy for sale by Bruiser Bulldogs is supported by a platform of health tested, clean genetics. Upon adoption, each family that takes on the responsibility of a Bruiser Bulldog enters into an active and vibrant communal family of bulldog owners. Mitch and Erica believe it is their responsibility to provide emotional and mental support for the lifetime of each and every English Bulldog puppy they produce. To ensure the success of every adoption, Bruiser Bulldogs will always be committed to helping Bruiser Bulldog adopters care for their English Bulldogs to the best of their ability. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. The number of Boxers being surrendered by families and in the shelters is overwhelming. We continue to receive owner surrenders a week, along with multiple pleas from surrounding shelters for Boxers in need. So many Boxer are coming from families that are no longer able to financially care for them, just don't want them, many are dealing with illness or the Boxer's pet parent has passed away, and many just are moving. Without the funding or foster homes, sadly we have to turn away these surrenders. Please Foster, Fund or be a Forever Home. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. She has been an absolutely lovely pup around kids of all sizes and ages, dogs, and cats as well! She will make her future forever home so lucky. Below is a report from her foster. She adapted right away to our routine. We get up around and let the dogs out to do their business. She gets breakfast around AM and is a great eater. She then plays in the yard for a few hours before taking a long nap on the couch. She has dinner around PM and then goes outside one more time before bed. She has not had an accident in our home since we have had her. Mrs Maisel loves to play but is respectful when other dogs need a break from go go go energy. She is calm when meeting members of the household and when on walks and responds very well to a no command. She would also do well in a home with runners and hikers, her tongue hangs out of her mouth after a good long play or activity session. Mrs Maisel is an option for a home who has had prior experience with dogs, especially those who have prior experience with larger breed dogs. If there are children in the home, they should be over the age of 8 and knock-over proof as Mrs Maisel can get excited and play bowling alley with little ones. Petey Donor Spotlight: Doreen Murotsune For many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. In addition to being an active Strut Your Mutt teammate for each of the past 5 years, Doreen browses the boxers in our care and sponsors many dogs whose stories warm her heart. She not only sponsors dogs with single or repeat financial gifts, but also inquires about dogs with prescription diet needs and then purchases those diets on an autoship schedule, having the food mailed directly to foster homes. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Tennessee? Jim T. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep your dog feeling and looking his best. Most people recommend feeding this breed two meals each day, spaced about twelve hours apart. This will help to ensure the dog is provided with the proper nutrients he needs. It is also important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care. It is suggested that his teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week. Failing to keep his teeth clean can contribute to health issues. Although properly cleaning his teeth will take some practice to get good at, in time, this will become easier for you and your pup. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

And just to keep us guessing, puppies might fade or darken as they mature. Check out at all these colors: white, chalk, cream, gold, apricot, caramel, buff, parchment, red, cafe, chocolate, lavender, pewter, and black! The First "Designer Dog" A mixed breed dog is every bit as delightful as a purebred dog, and some argue, healthier mentally and physically by virtue of hybrid-vigor. By matching two completely different breeds, it is assumed the healthy traits will be dominant, and because there are more trait options, the genetic make up of the dog is better. Advantages of Multi-Generational Labradoodles Labradoodle breeders usually choose multi-generational breeding as a way to not just improve on the breed but also for the consistency in their litters. The puppies coming from these parents are generally sociable, gentle, non-aggressive, intuitive and highly intelligent. They have the qualities needed to make excellent service or therapy dogs. See this article to find out why. One of the main advantages of multi-generational Labradors is that the breeders have had years of breeding these dogs through several generations, so their results are not coincidental or random. How easy are they to train exactly? We answer that here. The coat quality and style may not seem important to one individual but can make a huge difference to an individual suffering from allergies. Parents have often commented on how each of their children is different, and they often wish they could take the best qualities of each child and combine them for the perfect child. The way in which you raise and train your pup can influence their personalities a great deal. Grab your copy today to be on your way to transforming your puppy into your dream dog. Are Multi-Generational Labradoodles more expensive? When it comes to the price for these dogs, you really do get what you pay for. See actual price examples here. There are many wonderful Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, and Labradoodles around, and many of them are probably very affordable. Do Multi-Generational Labradoodles have longer lifespans? Labradoodles do have some health issues but are generally healthy dogs overall with lifespans of 12 to 15 years. Although they are the result of generations of careful breeding, there are still some health issues that both Poodles and Labs are prone to developing. We Hope You Enjoyed! A multigen Labradoodle is usually at least three generations removed from their closest purebred Labrador or Poodle ancestor. When breeders talk about multigen Labradoodles, they might also use confusing terms like 1st generation Labradoodle, and F2b Labradoodle. But once you understand the simple rules of labelling doodle generations, they are a useful source of information! What Is A Multigenerational Labradoodle? Breeders usually use the term multigenerational Labradoodle or multigen Labradoodle to describe an F3 Labradoodle or beyond. Or in other words, a puppy whose closest purebred ancestor is a great grandparent or further. An F1 Labradoodle puppy can also also be described as a 1st generation Labradoodle. F2 Labradoodles have two F1 Labradoodle parents. Their closest purebred ancestors are their grandparents, and they are two generations removed from them. Therefore, an F2 Labradoodle is also sometimes called a 2nd generation Labradoodle. F1b Labradoodles have one F1 Labradoodle parent, and the other parent is either a pedigree Labrador or pedigree Poodle. More usually it is a Poodle, to increase the odds of each F1b puppy having a non-shedding coat. Back crossing can be performed on later generations too. An F3 Labradoodle is three generations removed from their closest purebred ancestor. Or in other words, their closest pedigree Labrador or Poodle relative is a great-grandparent. Which is why most breeders switch to describing litters as multigenerational instead! Well, the reason is all to do with fixing desirable genetic traits in the next litter. And for many breeders, an important example of this is coat type. Does a multigen Labrdoodle shed? Labradors have heavy shedding coats, whilst Poodle coats shed very little. F1 Labradoodles can inherit either coat type, but creating multigen litters from proven non-shedding Labradoodle lines increases the odds of puppies with non-shedding coats. Multigen Labradoodle temperament Multigen Labradoodles can also be more reliable in other respects. But using the friendliest F1 Labradoodles to create an F2 generation, and using the friendliest individuals from that generation to create an F3 generation, increases the odds of multigen Labradoodles also being exceptionally friendly. What About Multigenerational Mini Labradoodles? The first Labradoodles were a Labrador and Standard Poodle mix. They varied in size from 40 to 80 pounds. Since then, interest in Labradoodles with a Miniature Poodle parent has also increased. Miniature Poodles weigh just 10 to 15 pounds, which means the potential range of adult sizes in a litter of F1 Mini Labradoodle puppies is wide. Creating a litter of F1b Mini Labradoodle puppies with one Mini Labradoodle parent and one Mini Poodle parent increases the likelihood of small, non-shedding puppies. And producing multigenerational Mini Labradoodles after that will further decrease the likelihood of puppies over a certain size in each litter. Labradors and Poodles are both prone to some genetic health problems, and in particular hereditary orthopedic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. All Labradors and Poodles used for breeding should first be tested and cleared for: hip dysplasia eye disease and the faulty gene that causes exercise induced collapse. So, always ask your breeder for proof of the results of these tests. What is it about each of them that they were so keen to capture in another generation? These questions are particularly important for multigen Labradoodles because in a sense, there is no right or wrong answer. Whilst another person might be seeking an energetic dog they can go running with or train as a gundog. The breeder is likely to have picked parents who match their idea of the best Labradoodle temperament. You need to find out if your idea of perfection is the same! Types of Labradoodles There are lots of ways of categorizing Labradoodles, but a really interesting one that is relevant here is designer Labradoodles vs Australian Labradoodles. Multigen Labradoodles also fall into this category, albeit somewhere on the fringes of it. Australian Labradoodles, on the other hand, are more than just an Australian Labrador Poodle cross. Australian Labradoodle is the breed name adopted by Labradoodle enthusiasts who are trying to get the Labradoodle recognized as a new pedigree dog in its own right. To achieve this, they need to breed true. That is, each new generation of puppies should come from the previous generation of Australian Labradoodles, with no more outcrossing to purebred Labradors and Poodles. And all the puppies should match the same physical profile and behave in a reliably similar way. Multigenerational Labradoodle Summary Multigen Labradoodles are at least three generations apart from their closest pedigree Lab or Poodle relative. Breeding multigen Labradoodles is an opportunity to create litters with less variable qualities than F1 Labradoodles. Do you already have a multigen Labradoodle? It is highly recommended to understand the underlying cause in order to effectively solve the problem. Why is my Labrador not putting on weight? Labradors are known for their large structure and are not meant to be skinny. Therefore, if you notice your Labrador is skinny, it is likely that there is an underlying issue. As a Labrador owner, it is important to understand the actual reasons behind sudden weight loss. Some of the primary and common causes include: 1. This would be the case if your Labrador has been skinny since puppyhood and has not suddenly become thin. When you are providing the appropriate amount of food, and there are no other issues, then a skinny appearance may not be a cause for concern. Diet If your Labrador is not gaining weight, you should consider consulting with a veterinarian and replacing its regular diet with a healthier one. It is possible that you are not providing the appropriate amount or quality of food, which is causing your Labrador to become skinny over time. Before offering meals to your Labrador, make sure that it is not allergic to any specific food item. Exercise Labradors require a lot of daily exercises. If you are underfeeding them then they will lose too much weight. Discuss with your vet how much you should feed your lab for their exercise level. Illness This is the first reason that comes to mind for many dog parents when they notice weight loss in their Labrador. While illness can be a cause in some conditions, it is not always the case. If you notice any physical signs of pain or disease, it is important to schedule a visit with the vet without delay. Stress As we know, Labrador Retrievers are a social breed and are more prone to separation anxiety or stress if not given proper attention. It is possible that your Labrador is experiencing some pressure and this mental condition is preventing it from gaining weight. Often, fear and new surroundings can cause stress in Labradors. How thin should labs be? Dog owners may feel concerned if their Labrador is too skinny. If the ribs and vertebrae of your Labrador are visible, it is an indication that your Labrador is skinnier than average. Before introducing any medication or special food, it is important for dog owners to know the ideal weight for their Labrador. The ideal weight for male and female Labradors will differ depending on their activity level and energy, but there are standards. For male Labradors, 60 to 80 lbs are considered the ideal weight. If your Labrador is skinnier than this weight, it is considered too skinny. For female Labradors , 55 to 70 lbs are the ideal weight. If a female Labrador weighs less than this, it is considered too skinny and weak. What to feed a dog to gain weight? A skinny Labrador is not a cause for concern when there are no severe underlying diseases. You can easily fatten up your dog with some good practices. The key is to focus on their diet and exercise routine. Feeding your Labrador at regular intervals will help. Sweet potato and pumpkin Sweet potatoes and pumpkin are healthy ways to help your dog gain weight. They can increase the amount of fat and fiber in their meals and improve their digestive system. You can also give them canned versions of these foods, but be sure to monitor the quantity as too much can cause your Labrador to become overweight. Regular exercise There is a misconception that exercise is only for weight loss, but it is crucial for achieving the right weight goal for your Labrador. It is highly recommended to exercise your Labrador regularly to maintain a healthy weight. Provide fresh food It would be beneficial to replace the dry kibble of your Labrador with fresh food as it has a stronger scent that is more appealing to dogs. This way, your dog will eat properly and not be thin anymore. If you choose to provide fresh food such as vegetables to your Labrador, make sure it is not spoiled. It is also recommended to serve warm food rather than cold or frozen food. Proper routine Food is processed differently by dogs than by humans, however, the two are quite similar. Individuals who eat within a couple of hours before bed, for example, have a higher probability of gaining weight. Eating just before bed prompts the body to store the nutrients as fat. Serve your dog with eggs Eggs are the best food for dogs when you want them to gain weight. Eggs are rich in fats, and protein, and serve the dog with amino acids. The presence of fatty acids is not only healthy for the body but also for the hair and skin of your Labrador. Additionally, eggs contain many nutrients and are easy to digest as a snack. Choosing food rich in eggs is also a good option when you want your Labrador to fatten up. There is a wide range of recipes to make rice for dogs when you want them to fatten up. However, dogs cannot rely on rice alone as it is not rich in protein and nutrition, but you can serve it with other meals. Providing rice as a snack food will boost the overall weight gain process of your Labrador. Are Labs Naturally Skinny? The shape of a Labrador Retriever is iconic and easily called to mind for most of us. That they all mostly fit the same template is due to a clear description of the ideal Labrador conformation set out in their breed standard. It also requires Labs to have a moderately wide chest, and be short coupled which means the distance from their ribs to their pelvis is relatively short, compared to dogs on average. These features have the combined effect of making the Labrador look more naturally heavy and bulky, than thin and gangly. This is partly due to natural variation in size, and lifestyle factors. Different Labrador Shapes: American vs English Breeding choices and different opinions about how the ideal Labrador looks on either side of the Atlantic has led to two distinct types of Lab — English and American. They both belong to the same breed, but English Labs tend to be broader, stockier, and more heavy set. Whilst American Labs tend to be taller, longer, and slimmer looking. In the U. A smaller proportion belong to the English type. So the general perception of Labrador body shape in the U. The American Kennel Club describes the ideal weight of Labs in working condition as approximately 65 to 80 lbs for males and approximately 55 to 70 lbs for females. But around 70 to 80 lbs for a male and 60 to 70 lbs for a female is typical. This is where overall body condition comes in. Labradors at a healthy weight have a discernible waist from above, and from the side their belly is tucked up slightly higher than their chest. Vets also examine body condition by touch — applying pressure over the ribs to assess how much fat is covering them, for example. Dogs in healthy condition have ribs which can be easily felt under a thin layer of fat. Overall body condition is a better way of identifying whether your dog is at a healthy weight than putting them on the scales alone, because it works regardless of what sex your Lab is, how tall they are, and whether they are big or small in stature generally. Even using a body condition score chart, we tend to underestimate their size. In fact, only half of us ever get it right! However, if you can see any of these changes in your dog it is possible that they are underweight: Visible ribs, vertebrae or pelvic bones. Or being able to feel any of those bones immediately under the skin with no fat covering them at all. Loss of muscle mass. The underline of their body the shape of their ribs and belly sideways on following an S-like curve. In ideal condition, the underline of adult Labradors slopes up towards the hindquarters, but in a straight line. If any of these apply to your Lab, we recommend asking a vet to check them over. One is not eating enough calories to replace all the energy they burn in a day. Other reasons include parasitic infection such as leashmaniasis and parvovirus cancer kidney disease and hereditary muscle wasting conditions such as muscular dystrophy, and myopathy. And as you can easily imagine, none of these are treated as simply as by giving the dog more calories in their diet! However, being too skinny during their growing months can also have a damaging effect on things like bone development. Sometimes the simplest way of doing this is by overfeeding their usual diet a little every day, until they reach a healthy body condition. But your vet might also recommend switching to a more energy rich diet. All Labs should have an owner that pays attention to their welfare so closely, and cares about them so much. The truth is that a lot of dogs we perceive as being underweight are actually in a healthy condition. A vet will be able to determine whether they are really too skinny, and if so why, and how to safely fatten them up. Readers Also Liked. Q: What is a healthy weight for a Labrador Retriever?
