Our puppies have been exposed to different stimuli and sounds such as other animals horses, chickens , people, vacuum cleaners, children playing and crying, TV, shooting, and other loud noises. I also play a sound socialization CD daily. This helps produce calm, confident, less aggressive, and less stressed puppies. We use the Puppy Culture program to socialize and raise our puppies. We have had many buyers contact us after a few months to tell us that their puppy is the smartest, most agile, best-natured, beautiful dog they have ever owned. Quotes from new owners include: "He literally is the most handsome golden retriever I've ever seen. He is the best thing ever and I love him tremendously. He is beautiful, well behaved and very intelligent. He is a fantastic and loyal addition to our family. Karla is great to work with. She is prompt in responding to any questions, makes herself available and makes the process of picking and getting a puppy quite seamless. I have always been an animal person and grew up with many family dogs that I loved. Wilson is an entirely different story. I've never felt more attachment or love to an animal the way that I do for him. He has the most magnetic personality that makes it hard not to smile around him. I am pretty sure he would turn into a fish if he had the opportunity. He's so active and healthy, but when we are inside he's so calm and cuddly. He is also very loved in return. He is a favorite in my family and friend group. Many friends often demanding to come over and see him or walk him. He touches everyone's life with his love and his beauty. He will be celebrating his 3rd birthday in less than a month! Thank you again for letting me share my life with such a wonderful dog. I am forever grateful for you and your goldens. All of the famous loving and gentle characteristics of other Goldens are found within the Block Head Golden Retriever. As a matter of fact, Block Head Golden Retrievers can be born within the same litter as Goldens with more wedge-shaped heads. These British Goldens usually have a much lighter cream-colored coat than when compared in American or Canadian Golden Retrievers. Also, they tend to have longer more feathery coats as well. However, the biggest differences found within these pups lie with their physical builds. The Block Head Golden Retriever has a much broader head than other retrievers. Along with that, their eyes are often much rounder and darker than other Goldens whose eyes tend to be more almond shape and lighter in color. Block Head Golden Retrievers are less prone to cancer. In a study on Golden Retrievers, English Golden Retrievers were shown to be affected by cancer at a .Studies have also shown that this sub-breed live longer lives than other types of Golden Retriever. The only colors of Golden Retriever that are recognized by the American Kennel Club are light golden, golden, and dark golden. Cream-colored or white Golden Retrievers are not certified colors. Block Head Golden Retrievers are more commonly found among white and cream-colored retrievers. Block Head Golden Retrievers are walking garbage cans! Not to say that they smell bad, but these dogs will eat anything and everything. Do not be fooled by their wily charm and lovable face. As a matter of fact, you may spend your whole life looking and not find a single one. They are amongst the gentlest and kindest souls of any living creature on the planet. Not only that, but they are exceptionally loyal and faithful dogs who live to make their masters and families happy. They are also very intelligent dogs. Normally, intelligence and stubbornness go hand-in-hand when it comes to dogs. However, such is not the case with the Block Head Golden Retriever. Their desire to please overrides the usual stubborn urges. In turn, Goldens are very easy to train. They can also be trained to help out elderly individuals or other family members with disabilities. We cannot recommend this dog enough when it comes to finding the perfect dog for any family situation. To the Block Head Golden Retriever, other pets are just playmates and family members. However, just like any breed, there are some key things to note when properly raising one. Seldom will you find a picky eater among this bunch. Being larger dogs, cups of high-quality food a day should be more than sufficient. And we recommend spacing out their feedings as well instead of leaving constant food in their bowls. They might not have the full-on energy of a Husky or Australian Cattle Dog , but they definitely love to play. A good solid hour of play each day will satisfy their exercise requirements. These dogs are also known for their puppy-like personality even late into their twilight years. To minimize their shedding, you should brush your Golden fully times a week with a slicker brush. However, there a few conditions that the breed is more prone to than others. Hip and elbow dysplasia are the two biggest areas of concern for these dogs. This more commonly found in larger dogs. This can lead to arthritis and other problems down the road. These are inheritable genetic conditions as well. So, if your Golden is experiencing these conditions, you should avoid breeding them. Another big cause of concern for this breed in particular is gastric dilation-volvulus—more commonly known as bloat. If you realize your pup eats too much too fast, just make sure they get a good rest or nap immediately afterward before letting them run off and play. Minor Conditions. Related Articles: Block Head Golden Retriever Puppies While it is easy to identify this type of Golden Retriever when they become adults, it is hard to recognize it when they are puppies. Often the pet owner will have no idea they have a blockhead golden until the puppy has been home with them for several months. The attribute that defines this type of puppy, which is their head shape and size, is hard to distinguish when they are puppies. It is also hard to tell whether a litter of Golden Retrievers will include any block head puppies or not. Of course, if you have two block heads that breed together, there is a higher likelihood that at least some of the puppies would have this defining feature with them. But this is not guaranteed. However, block head Goldies are bound to show up in litters that is the least expected. In some cases, dog owners have seen that it is more common to get a block head Golden Retriever among different colors of Golden Retrievers, especially the light colored ones. Rather than focusing on the block head feature of the dog, it is important to look more at the variety of Golden Retriever that you would like to bring home. This means you should take a look at these dogs and see if they have the specific characteristics you want, rather than hoping to purchase a puppy that has a block head, but may turn out to be a slender head. This is common with many different breeds of dogs, though for some reason Golden Retrievers seem to get lumped together in one group. When it comes to the varieties that are with the Golden Retriever though, the differences are cosmetic and will not affect the temperament or the health of your dog. The two main types include: Block Head Golden Retriever The Block head Golden Retriever is recognized because it has a larger head, often with better fur, compared to the other breeds that are out there. This type of dog is graded as a show dog due to these features. When they are a baby, they may not look much different than the other varieties, which can make some pet owners wary about purchasing one until they know for sure. As the dog gets bigger, it is easier to see the different shape and size of the head become more prominent. This type of Golden Retriever holds more of the standard look for this breed. This does not mean there is anything wrong with the slender head breed. But because the other breed has been designed to do well at shows and being shown off, it is the more common, and the more popular, breed to work with. Slender Head Golden Retriever If you are looking for a show dog, then you will want to use the block head Golden Retriever to do this. The reason for this is that they are showy and have bigger heads. This does not mean that they are necessarily any better than the second option of Golden Retriever, the Slender Head Golden Retriever. For this breed of dog, the domed or narrow head is going to be found. This is preferred for some pet owners because they look pretty cute with this kind of head. The only difference between them and the block head breed is the side of the head. They have the same temperament and the same health factors so that should not determine whether you choose one or another. It is all a matter of personal preference. Different Varieties of Golden Retrievers In addition to the two main types of Golden Retrievers that we talked about above, there are a few different varieties of these dogs as well. They are all lovable and great additions to have in your family. But it is up to the personal preference of the dog owner to determine which one is best for them. This is the one that looks quite a bit different than some of the other breeds. The hair is a bit shorter and thinner compared to some of the others. The coat is often darker since the lighter color sometime seen will come from their long light-colored overcoat. This is good news if you want a dog that is not going to shed all that much, though you do lose out on some of the fluffiness that comes with this variety. This type of dog is also going to be a bit taller than some of the other varieties of Golden Retrievers. Their weight is a little bit more as well. This is not a huge difference, but if you would like the dog to be a little bit smaller, then you may want to choose one of the other breeds, especially the American Golden Retriever. This is a breed that is seen in many parts of Europe and Australia. They have some beautiful coats that come with long and feathery fur, which is a distinctive feature of this breed. This version is a little bit smaller than the Canadian variety, even though the differences are not that large. There are only a few differences between the English and American varieties of these dogs. They have the same kind of temperament and the same size. The biggest difference will be in the build. You will quickly notice that the British variety will have more power and muscles, along with rounder and darker eyes compared to their American friends. The color of the coat is often lighter as well. American Golden Retriever These breeds have less muscles compared to some of the other varieties. This makes them look lankier and they often have narrower bodies and heads as well. They may have a darker coat compared to the British breed, though the color is more lustrous golden. They may also have some feathering, giving your family a big fluffy dog to love on all they want. When this type of Golden Retriever starts to run around, you will notice their gait is smooth, free, and powerful with a lot of coordination along the way. Their feet can also converge on a center point of balance as they run around. This will help them be a good show dog, even if they do not have the block head that is generally accepted for this. Keep in mind that this is for the American standard, which is different than some of the other options. All of these varieties of Golden Retrievers can fit under either the block head or slender head variety. It will depend on the litter and breeding that are used. It is possible for one litter to be a combination of both of these types based on the genetics of the parent. It may take a few generations of breeding in a specific way before you get a full litter of block head puppies, though this is not a guarantee either. All Golden Retrievers are a wonderful addition to your home and family. And when you are looking for a loyal and faithful dog that is able to keep up with everything your family likes to do, then the Golden Retriever is one of the best options out there. Whether you choose to go with a block head or a slender head Golden Retriever, you are getting a pet that your whole family will enjoy. Related Articles:.

Available: Now Hey everyone! Chance was an owner surrender to the animal shelter and was in rough shape. Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care. For the complete list please see our Boxer Breeders List page. Boxers are best known for their short coats, but they also come in long-haired varieties. Prices vary on the type of coat. The price of a boxer puppy may also vary because of the place you get the Boxer. For example, most breeders in or around Georgia charge significantly more than a breeder who is located in another state or country. Prices will also fluctuate depending on whether or not the puppy is show-quality. Boxers are known for being loyal to their families and being intelligent. They are generally very friendly with children, strangers, and other animals unless they have been trained to be aggressive American Kennel Club. They require moderate exercise but do best in homes where someone is around during the day because they do not like being left alone especially if they have never been apart from them before. Overall these characteristics make the Boxer a great family pet. These clearances can be found by looking up the parent dogs on the OFA website offa. They should also show you where and how they were raised and keep them until they are at least eight weeks old to ensure that they have been properly socialized, which is crucial for a Boxer puppy. Ask about any hip or eye problems in their lines. Where and how many generations of champion bloodlines do they go back? This is usually more important for those who want to breed their new puppy as it shows they have a lot of knowledge about the breed and can provide you with knowledgeable information. Are there any known health problems in their lines? Most responsible breeders will be able to tell you that they care for all of their dogs and even give them regular check-ups and if not, this is a red flag. Visit Your Georgia Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find a responsible breeder, it is important to do some research. A decent Boxer breeder should be more than willing to tell you about themselves and their dogs. When you visit your Georgia boxer breeder in person, look for cleanliness and organization of the house or kennel. The area should not have any bad odors, and the puppies should appear healthy with shiny coats and bright eyes. They may be very active, which is normal but if they seem lethargic this could be an indication of illness or improper nutrition. It is also recommended that you ask for references from previous customers as well as veterinarians who have seen these dogs before. This will help ensure that you make a good investment when looking for a Boxer puppy. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Georgia Once you have found a breeder that meets the previous criteria, it is time to ask for references. A responsible Boxer Breeder will be able to provide any information about their dogs that you request. Ask them if you can speak with past customers of theirs so that you can find out how they were trained and cared for as well as the personality of these dogs. This way, you are making sure that this potential dog is right for your family before you make any final decisions. References can also be found online. If you find nothing, this may be a red flag since anyone can put anything on the internet. Make sure to contact them directly instead of through their website or Facebook page to avoid scams or other dishonest sellers who use these outlets for marketing purposes only. This allows you to get a more honest opinion about the breeder and their dogs without worrying about repercussions later on. We all know that there is little recourse for unsatisfied customers but rest assured knowing that these people will not hesitate to give you an honest answer if given permission to speak freely. Meeting past customers will also give you a better idea of what type of dog they have put into your family. Meeting the previous owners allows you to look for certain traits in a potential puppy, such as energy levels or age appropriateness. Another good way to find out about your breeder is to ask them if they have a veterinarian that they use for their dogs. A responsible boxer breeder should be able to provide you with this information without hesitation since taking care of their animals is important to them. If the Boxer Breeder does not have any sort of medical history available about their lines, this might be a red flag. If they are unwilling or unable to answer these questions, this could also mean that they are hiding something from you or do not know the answers themselves. These individuals may be backyard breeders or puppy mill owners who are looking to make a quick buck and care little about the health of their animals or their customers. A few signs that your Georgia Boxer Breeder is unethical include: They Do Not Have References: If you ask your breeder if they can provide any references from past buyers and they refuse, this could mean several things; Either they do not know how to get in touch with them unlikely or there is something wrong with these dogs that no one wants to talk about. Inquiring further will help you identify which it is but under either circumstance, it is best not to work with this kind of breeder. They Have Inflated Prices: Another way to spot an unethical boxer breeder is by the prices that they have listed on their dogs. If these Boxer dogs seem much more expensive than other breeders you have looked at, this might be a sign that something is wrong with them. This could involve health issues or genetics, but it is likely just a scheme to get more money from you without putting in the proper amount of time and care into these animals. Very Little Information about Their Breeding Program: Ethical and good Dog Breeders will do everything that they can to supply you with as many details about their breeding program as possible. They want you to feel safe and comfortable knowing what types of treatments the dog will receive and what they will be born into. There is no excuse not to provide you with this information; if your Boxer Breeder does not, then move on to another one. If you want a full-bred Boxer dog, make sure that you tell them before you purchase the animal. Many responsible breeders ask their customers for preferences when it comes to the age or sex of their dogs so that they can match up your needs with the right puppy. Responsible breeders will not only be able to answer this question, but they should also be able to provide you with information on what type of issues other puppy owners have experienced. If the breeder claims that all of their Boxer Dogs are healthy, then you should push for further explanation. If none of the puppies or adults have any medical concerns then that should be something that makes you feel safe. However, if there were previous owners who dealt with anything severe in the past, this information should still be available somewhere. This can include genetic conditions or simply problems with allergies or skin rashes. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy When you look at a breed as hearty as the Boxer, it can be easy to underestimate how much work and time this dog will need to be happy and healthy. However, if treated properly and cared for well by their owners, these dogs can make excellent pets; which is why it is so important that you take the following steps before bringing your pup home: The biggest thing that you want to do before you bring your Boxer home is to make sure that the living conditions are appropriate for this breed. You will want to have a large, fenced-in yard where your dog can move around freely and play. If you live in an apartment or condo, then it may be time to start looking into other options; Boxers need room to run which cannot be provided adequately in these types of environments. Another important thing that needs to be prepared is the area where your puppy will sleep at night. Not only should it be isolated from any drafts or cold air, but it should also provide warmth during the winter months. Be sure to look into buying bedding or blankets specifically designed for dogs if necessary. Your Boxer will also require training as soon as possible. This breed is known for having extremely high intelligence, but it does not come naturally to them; you will need to work hard to train your Boxer Puppy and give them boundaries that they can grow up comfortably within. You should start this process as early as possible so that it becomes second nature by the time your pup turns into an adult and needs more rules and regulations than just potty training. Potty Training Your New Boxer Puppy The most important thing that you need to teach your new Boxer is how to use the potty appropriately. You do not want to deal with any accidents in the house, and making sure they are trained properly will ensure that this does not happen. The best way to accomplish this is through crate training; it may be a very foreign concept for many owners, but it is also one of the most effective methods when it comes to house-breaking puppies. It is recommended that you put your Boxer Puppy into a crate at night while you sleep and then carefully take them out first thing in the morning so that they can use the bathroom right away. Do not allow them too much time without being taken just before bed because they might make a mistake in your absence. Another important step that you should take is to keep your puppy on a strict schedule; this means taking them out for walks regularly and making time every few hours to play with them, feed them, and then let them use the bathroom once more. This will ensure that they do not have accidents inside of the house because their body will be used to getting into the habit of relieving themselves outside. You need to make sure that there are no areas where they can get injured or choke on something by accident. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. They Crave Attention And Company Despite the large sizes, boxers are extremely affectionate and require companionship from their human family. On the flipside of their loyalty and attention-loving personalities, boxers can develop separation anxiety when left alone for extended periods. Boxers are effortless to care for, and grooming is very easy, even for first-time pet owners. The reason primarily comes down to their short coat and very little shedding. Brushing these big boys once a week is all you need. However, they are high energy bred, so they will need their daily exercise without exception. Boxers Love The Warmth Although boxers originated in Germany, this breed of dogs does not do well in cold climates. Their short coat offers them very little protection from the chilly cold. A pair of canine winter boots will also come in handy when he goes outside during the cold winter months. Despite their size and fantastic breed, boxers are not very expensive, which is fantastic. In rare cases where the boxer comes from champion lines, the cost can be a bit higher. In addition, the age and overall health of the boxer can also affect the average cost of the boxer. Boxers from reputed breeders can also come at a higher price than rescue homes and charity organizations. This includes the cost of puppy food, grooming, and essential pet supplies. If you were to include vet visits, insurance, a pet walker, and other ways to pamper your boxer pup, then the cost would be significantly higher. Boxers have an average life expectancy of 9 years, which is relatively short for a canine. However, with the right diet, exercise, and health checkups, especially dental care, your boxer can live up to 12 years without any problems. Final Thoughts This list of the top boxer breeders in Georgia should give you a head start to finding the right canine friend to add to your family. The breeder and sellers on this list are credible, so you can check them out with full confidence. All the best for hunting the right fur baby! Questions about Boxer puppies for sale in Atlanta GA? We are currently overwhlemed with requests to rehome dogs. In many cases these dogs are relatively young and due to inadequate training, boundary setting and guidance are reactive towards dogs and people. In some instances, they come with a bite history. It is virtually impossible for us to rehome these dogs. Often if they have the experience, visiting grandchildren for example, may make taking on a dog with these issues very difficult. As a result, these dogs are ending up in kennels at great cost to the rescue, with little chance of ever finding a home willing to give them a chance. All of these dogs have been totally failed by their previous owners. If you take on a dog at any age, it is a commitment for the duration of their life. If the dog displays behaviours that you are not happy with, it is your responsibility as a dog owner to put in the required work. This may be done by reaching out to a qualified behaviourist or trainer and even if you get professional help, you will still need to put in the work in terms of putting what you have learned into practice, and by repetition. Dogs are sentient creatures; they are not disposable. They are not there until you meet a partner, or until you move away, get a new job or your relationship breaks down. They are for life. Along the way this seems to have been forgotten. Dogs are family and deserve the time and commitment you would put into any family member. We can help with a list of approved trainers and give advice to help you work with your dog but sadly are not in a position currently to help rehome these dogs. Do the right thing by your dog, get help and don't expect rescues to pick up the pieces because you have failed your best friend. They would do anything for you, so we think they deserve the same. Tasha Desperately Needs A Home Tasha arrived in the UK in and has been in kennels ever since that's nearly 5 years, unwanted and unloved! When she first arrived she was only a puppy but she was afraid and panicked as she was carried away from the van, went to bite the person carrying her and managed to escape and was running loose for 2 weeks. We do believe that this is the reason as to why she doesn't like people she doesn't know. She was caught and now she knows everyone at the kennels she is a happy contented dog. Tasha will need someone who is prepared to visit the kennels maybe a few times to gain her trust. Once she trusts and is settled shewill be your faithful companion. She loves other dogs so would perhaps be better being rehomed where there is another dog in the home. She will follow other dogs and settles quickly in the presence of a happy relaxed dog. She has no interest in cats, she just wants to be by your side. Please give Tasha the chance of having her forever home, she has waited far too long. If you are interested please complete an adoption form so that a volunteer can contact you. Most of these dogs are finding their way into the UK through unscrupulous breeders in eastern Europe or coming in via questionable rescuers with no rescue back up here in the UK. Most that we have helped so far, have been picked up as strays here in the UK. Welcome to Wallace Kennels Dog Rescue A small family run rescue established since dedicated to helping stray and unwanted dogs in and around the Essex area. About Us Wallace Kennels is a small family run Dog Rescue with help from a team of dedicated volunteers without whom we could not function. The kennels have been in operation for over 45 years. It was initially a thriving boarding kennels and cattery run by Vera Robinson who was awarded an MBE for her tireless work in .She sadly died in and her son Mark and daughter-in-law Dee have continued to run and renovate the kennels ever since. Wallace Kennels are the stray dog pound for the Boroughs of Brentwood and Chelmsford and will occasionally take over-flow dogs from other areas as and when needed. We also take in unwanted and abandoned dogs for rehabilitation and rehoming once ready from the general public - space permitting. The kennels can accommodate up to 60 dogs at any one time but try to keep to more manageable numbers to ensure that all the dogs get the care and assistance they need and deserve. We pride ourselves on getting to know our dogs and aim to find each and everyone that comes through our doors their forever home, however long that may take us. We do, in principle, have a non-destruct policy but sadly on very rare occasions, for a variety of reasons, it may not be possible to save someone - these decisions are taken jointly and with much sadness. We are a non-profit rescue that rely solely on the goodwill and generosity of the public in order to stay open. We are extremely grateful for any donations no matter how small - every single penny helps us to continue doing what we do, improve our facilities and stay open. Different Colors of Golden Retrievers People who want to buy a golden retriever will be able to choose between different colors of coat. The most common ones are English cream, but there are also red light or dark , Irish cream, white, brown, mahogany, and dark colored. Their coat will also come in different types. You will find retrievers who have a short hair, ones that have long hair, and many who have fluffy coats, making them look extremely cute and huggable not to mention much larger than they really are. Types of Golden Retrievers There are different types of golden retrievers. Their common traits tend to be their large, strong bodies and dense, wavy coat. But they have a long history of pedigree breeding and so have been segmented into different regional variations. There are three common types, each with their own distinctive characteristics. British This type is very common throughout Europe, particularly in Austria. Out of the three major types of the breed, the British ones are the biggest because they have been bred to have broader skulls and more balanced, muscular bodies. Out of all the three major types, the British Golden Retrievers are the closest to their origins as hunting and gun dogs because of their large musculature and great endurance. American This type is leaner and less muscular than the other types, with coat that take on much darker colors that feather really well. The American golden retrievers are well sought because of their distinct walking patterns, which tend to take on a free, smooth, and powerful trot due to the fact that their feet have a tendency to converge towards the center of their line of balance. While they tend to be of the same size as Canadian types, they tend to look taller due to their leaner musculature and straighter stance, not to mention the coat that tends to hug the body better. Considerations for Owning a Golden Retriever Owning a dog is a big responsibility, and is not something that should be taken as lightly as one would when it comes to buying an appliance or a toy. Golden retrievers are very loyal, loving, and fun to be around, but they have specific needs and quirks that you need to consider before buying one. You Need to Have the Room If you live in a small shack with narrow spaces and lots of tight corners to bump into, you may want to think twice because goldens are medium to large-sized dogs that can have as much as 24 inches at the shoulder and could grow as heavy as 75 pounds. They have very active tails that can easily sweep cups or vases off tables when excited. You will have to ensure that your house is uncluttered if you want a golden in your life. You Have to Be Physically Active as Well These dogs were originally bred for hunting and sports, so they tend to have a lot of stamina and will require at least 20 to 30 minutes of consistent exercise daily. They are susceptible to depression and separation anxiety if left alone all day, so make sure you are able to make yourself or a family member present for her at least every 5 hours. Hide Your Shoes Goldens are excessively playful, and they have been bred to carry things with their mouth. This results in a breed that will chew on just about anything that they can clamp their mouths to — shoes being the most common. So if you are planning to own a Golden, you have to keep your shoes, telephones, game consoles, pillows, toys out of reach. Neutering Can Pose Health Risks to a Golden Experts at the University of California have conducted research that point to neutering having negative effects on the health of a Golden Retriever. Some of the likely complications include increased risk of getting joint disorders and cancer. So if you want a golden and want to prevent it from breeding, you have to consider alternative methods such as tubal ligation or vasectomy. Health Risks for Goldens As with most large breeds, there are specific health concerns that you need to be wary of. They are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as eye disorders. Goldens are too nice to be guard dogs. They may growl and bark protectively, but an intruder has a chance of pacifying them because they are just that nice. Really Good Reasons to Own a Goldie Despite the somewhat lengthy, detailed list of concerns above, a golden retriever is still one of the most recommended dog breeds for Connecticut families due to a number of reasons: Safe Around Kids — The part about not being aggressive enough to be a guard dog? Kids that young are never to be left alone, dog or no dog. Perpetually Clingy — this type of dog is perfect for people who want something to hug and cuddle with regularly. They are eternal puppies who will always love to run to your arms and greet you with a hug. They can adapt well to the presence of other people and animals, including cats, rabbits, and other animals that normally pick fights with dogs. Very Smart — they are not going to help you do taxes anytime soon, but as far as dogs are concerned golden retrievers are very smart. Being bred to hunt and retrieve, they can be easily trained to do basic dog-related tasks and tricks. They can be trained to serve as companions to limited-ability pet owners. It should be easy to know if a Golden Retriever will find a place in your home, based on the pros and cons outlined above. One important thing to remember is that all dogs, regardless of breed, will require attention, care, and love from their owner. If you can provide those, then the rest will naturally follow and you should be able to spend many exciting years with your pet. Why Us Only a short few years ago, English Cream Golden Retrievers in America were rarely entrusted to breeders when European breeders thoroughly trained and mentored them. American Golden Retriever standards are still maintained in America, and that only by a handful of breeders truly breeding to the standard. Unfortuately, like the American Goldens, The English Cream Golden Retiever lines have recently fallen into the hands of breeders that are not even remotely interested in breeding to standard. Have you ever known someone that decided to breed their dog because they thought their dog was so great, that his lines needed to be passed on. Of course, that is no reason to breed a dog. There are many health tests, pedigree analytics and breed standards to meet. English Creams in recent years have been bred to small backyard gene pools or even regional gene pools that have produced weaker genetics, non-standard coat types, colors and temperaments not to the standard. We have put years of know-how, investment and careful consideration to make sure you get a breed-standard English Cream Golden Retriever. Our family works together as a team. We have a large family where everyone uses their talents in our family business. Dad is the glue that holds us all together. Mom keeps all the wheels running in the breeding business and the kids all use their specific talents, and have become experts at their "golden" puppy jobs over many years. Our Story We had a young family and had a dog bite happen to our then youngest son. After that happened, we found the English Golden Retrievers to be the perfect family dog. We absolutely love them and know that you will enjoy them as well. How to Reach Us We know that your puppy will be your family member for life. The greatest part of our job is the magical moments that you first get to hold your English Golden Retriever puppy. It often brings tears to everyone's eyes. If you are interested in one of the puppies, please reach out. We are diligent to follow up with every inquiry. We look forward to hearing from you. We first started breeding goldens in .We found a wonderful mama dog and had her bred to a handsome, healthy sire. Our first litter of puppies was born, and we realized we had fallen into something that we loved. Alisa and the girls knew that our lives would never be complete again without puppies in it. Poor Zach, who loves to build things, realized that if he wanted his garage back and to keep puppies out of his bathtub on cold nights he had better get started on a really nice dog house. Ha ha. Everyone was happy. Breeding can be an interesting field to navigate. There are many different breeding philosophies and many types of breeders but deciding what our program would look like was as simple as laying out our core values. Eight years later our program has grown. We now have four of our own beautiful dogs and several more in wonderful guardian homes. Breeding still brings us joy. We anxiously await every litter and love our time with your pup. We are excited to meet you and be a part of your journey. We carefully select our Dam and Sire for good health and wonderful personalities. We believe that nutrition is key to healthy happy dogs, so we offer good, high quality foods to mother and pups and carefully supplement with meat scraps. We live outside of Buhl, Idaho with lots of room for puppies to roam and play. We don't kennel our pups except at night for safety reasons. The puppies are a part of our lives from day one, and they will be well socialized to inside and outside environments, children, cars rides, and other pets. We believe in doing preliminary potty training as well as simple obedience training - even in the first 8 weeks. We allow the mother and pups to be together from day 1 to day 56, as they learn best from each other. We feel confident that these puppies will be happy, healthy, and well socialized. We would love to hear from you! Lily and Fisher's He is the perfect dog for our family. He is mellow indoors with us and adventurous outside. He came to us so sweet and content and well cared-for. His crate training and potty training have gone well too! It was a bit miraculous that we found each other, in a different state and pretty quickly, but Alisa was so responsive and informative. We are so grateful for the addition to our family! Winnie's Family I've had a great experience from the very beginning. Alisa is very communicative and answered all of my questions. She was kind, friendly, knowledgeable and easy to work with. It's clear that she's an experienced breeder. I also love knowing my golden girl has a health guarantee. Getting to meet my puppies mother and litter mate was a wonderful experience for us. Not only are her dogs healthy, but they are happy and well loved too. I have nothing but great things to say! Wrenly's Family I met the Atkinsons this past December after I had been talking to Alisa about how I was interested in getting a puppy. Since then they have all become family. With every step and question Alisa was there with an answer and let me see my pup multiple times before I even brought her home. They have given me the best experience and truly care and love their dogs like family! A lot of that is because of the breed of course, but also from the socialization and love and attention the Atkinsons give their dogs from the very beginning. Highly, highly, highly, recommend Atkinsons goldens to anyone interested in a puppy. We live a couple hours away and they were so good about sending us pictures, updating us with how our little guy was doing every few days and even a FaceTime date on Christmas Day to surprise our girls. Key Takeaways: Black long-haired German Shepherds are rare and have unique genes responsible for their coat length and color. These dogs exhibit loyalty , intelligence, and adaptability and make excellent family pets. While generally healthy, they may encounter common health concerns like dysplasia, allergies, and heart disease; preventative measures and regular vet checks are advised. As intelligent dogs, they respond well to structured, positive training with early socialization and consistent routines. Consider reputable breeders or adoption from shelters when looking to welcome a black long-haired German Shepherd into your home. Origins of the Black Long-Haired German Shepherd The origins of German Shepherds can be traced back to late 19th-century Germany, where a concerted effort was made to standardize and refine the various herding dog breeds found throughout the country. A cavalry officer named Captain Max von Stephanitz is credited with creating the modern German Shepherd breed, selecting dogs for their intelligence, strength, and versatility. Over time, different variations emerged, including the striking black long-haired German Shepherd we know today. However, Von Stephanitz wanted to breed the long hair out of the German Shepherd population because he believed it was too much maintenance, especially when it came to a hard-working farm dog. The long-hair gene remained despite his efforts but, at the same time, long-haired German Shepherds became quite rare. Today, black long-haired German Shepherds can be mainly found enjoying their lives as rare and cherished family pets. The Genetics Behind Their Unique Coat The distinctive coat of the black long-haired German Shepherd is a result of a recessive gene that both parents must carry to produce a long-haired offspring. Additionally, the all-black coloration is also due to a separate recessive gene that affects pigmentation. Temperament and Personality Traits Black long-haired German Shepherds are known for their loyal, intelligent, and protective nature. Just like short-coated sable or tan German Shepherds, they make excellent guard dogs due to their strong instincts and unwavering devotion to their families. These dogs are also highly trainable, making them ideal candidates for various roles requiring specialized skills. They thrive on human interaction and enjoy spending quality time with their families. Socialization from a young age is vital to ensure that these dogs grow up to be well-rounded, confident, and friendly. In addition to their loyalty and intelligence, black long-haired German Shepherds are also known for their adaptability. They can quickly adjust to different environments and situations, making them suitable companions for families with diverse lifestyles. This quality makes them excellent therapy or emotional support animals for those in need of a comforting presence. Despite their protective instincts, black long-haired German Shepherds tend to be gentle and patient with children when raised alongside them. The temperament of black long-haired German Shepherds is a harmonious blend of loyalty, intelligence, adaptability, and affection. With proper training and care, these remarkable dogs make loving companions who will stand by your side through thick and thin. Health Issues Specific to Long-Haired German Shepherds While black long-haired German Shepherds are generally a healthy breed, they can still be prone to certain health issues. Some of the most common concerns include: hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, bloat, allergies allergens can include certain foods, environmental factors like pollen or dust mites, and flea bites , pancreatitis, To prevent or manage these health issues in your long-haired German Shepherd: Schedule regular veterinary check-ups for early detection and treatment of potential health problems. Provide a balanced diet with high-quality, age-appropriate food to maintain optimal weight and overall health. Ensure your dog receives regular exercise to keep their joints and muscles strong and maintain cardiovascular health. Keep up-to-date with vaccinations and parasite prevention measures as recommended by your veterinarian. Be vigilant about potential signs of illness or injury in your dog, seeking prompt veterinary care if you notice anything unusual. Start training early in their lives to establish good habits and reinforce desired behaviors. Here are some tips to help you effectively train your canine companion: Establish a routine. Consistency is key when training any dog, so try to create a daily routine that includes designated times for training sessions, exercise, and playtime. This structure will help your dog understand what is expected of them and reinforce good habits. Use positive reinforcement. Reward your dog for exhibiting desired behaviors by offering praise, treats, or playtime. This approach reinforces good behavior and encourages your dog to repeat it in the future. Be patient and persistent. Training takes time, and every dog learns at their own pace. If your German Shepherd struggles with a particular command or skill, be patient and continue working on it until they grasp the concept. Remember to keep training sessions short and engaging to maintain their focus and interest. Gradually increase difficulty. As your dog masters basic commands, gradually introduce more challenging tasks to keep them mentally stimulated. This can include teaching them tricks, practicing off-leash obedience, or enrolling them in specialized classes like agility or scent work. Socialize early and often. Expose your black long-haired German Shepherd to various environments, people, and other animals from a young age. This exposure will help them become more comfortable in different situations and reduce the likelihood of fear or aggression-related issues. Address unwanted behaviors immediately. If your German Shepherd exhibits undesirable behaviors like excessive barking or jumping on people, address the issue right away by redirecting their attention to an appropriate activity or offering a firm but gentle correction. Consider professional help if needed. These experts can offer valuable guidance and support throughout the training process. By following these tips and maintaining a consistent, positive approach, your black long-haired German Shepherd will develop into a well-trained, confident, and obedient companion. Remember that training is an ongoing process that not only teaches your dog good manners but also strengthens the bond between you and your beloved pet. Be prepared to answer questions about your lifestyle and living situation, as responsible breeders want to ensure their puppies go to suitable homes. Alternatively, consider adopting a long-haired German Shepherd from a breed-specific rescue organization or local shelter. The black German shepherd is a rare and highly sought-after variety of the standard German shepherd dog breed. Although multiple color variations of GSD exist, black German shepherd puppies are one of the most popular thanks to their sleek, handsome coats. The pitch-black color that gives these dogs their magnificent appearance is the result of a naturally occurring recessive gene. This means black German shepherds have naturally existed for quite some time, but they are much rarer than their black and tan counterparts. When properly socialized from a young age, black German shepherds make wonderful companions and excellent guard dogs. These large doggos are best suited for experienced owners with large homes and fenced-in yards. If you are looking for a handsome companion that can double as a guard dog, the black German shepherd is a fantastic choice! Keep on reading to find out more about this rare variety and decide if it is the right canine for you. Black German shepherds are a color variation of the standard German shepherd dog. While they may look completely different, these dogs are the same breed, and the black variety is recognized in the official GSD standard. While purebred black German shepherd puppies can compete in dog shows, they are often overlooked in favor of the classic black and tan look. These dogs were later used by the military as messengers, sentries, guards, supply carriers, and rescuers. Black shepherds tend to be slightly larger than the average GSD, and most have a straighter back. When it comes to features, you can expect your black German shepherd puppy to have a clear-cut head, pointed ears, a long snout, almond-shaped brown eyes, and a black nose. Males are usually around 24 to 26 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. Female dogs are typically smaller and stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh from 50 to 75 pounds. The average GSD can be black and tan, black, sable, grey, red and black, or even black and silver. In German shepherds, black coats are caused by a recessive gene. This means a puppy needs to inherit two copies of a recessive gene from both mom and dad in order to have a black coat. For example, if you mate two sable German shepherds that carry this recessive gene, a quarter of their puppies will have a black coat. However, if you breed a black German shepherd with a sable dog that carries the gene, roughly half of their litter will be black in color. Breeding two black German shepherds is the only guaranteed way to produce a litter of completely black puppies. Bear in mind that all German shepherd puppies change color as they grow. Coat Texture These pitch-black canines have a medium-to-long double coat. The coat can be either straight or wavy and will shed all year long and go through two blowouts — once in the spring and again in the fall. If you decide to welcome a black GSD into your home, be prepared to welcome lots of loose doggy hair as well! Since these doggos shed a lot, invest in a powerful pet hair vacuum cleaner and be prepared to vacuum every day to keep your home clean and tidy. Black German Shepherd Temperament And Character Black German shepherds are best known for their loyal, courageous, obedient, and watchful temperament. Thanks to their protective nature and working history, they make amazing guard dogs that will fiercely protect your family and your home. A properly trained and socialized black GSD puppy will get along well with people outside the family but remain a loyal guardian and protector. They are naturally wary of strangers, so early socialization and consistent training are a must! Although they are working dogs at heart, black GSD make wonderful companions and even get along with children and other pets when properly socialized. An anxious or stressed black shepherd will turn to destructive behavior to relieve their frustrations. As a result, your black German shepherd pup may decide to chew woodwork , destroy your home, or bark loudly. While they are not the best choice for first-time owners, black shepherds make fantastic family pets and companions when properly trained and socialized. Because they tend to get so attached to their people, these pups are better off in homes where someone is usually around to keep them company. Activity Level Highly energetic and agile, these handsome solid black pups need regular exercise to stay healthy and in good shape. Apart from at least two daily walks, your black German shepherd pup will also enjoy running, jogging, hiking, cycling, swimming, or any other activity that allows them to spend time with you. Caring For Black German Shepherd Puppy While they are not harder to care for than standard German shepherds, your black GSD still needs a lot of love, care, and affection to stay happy and thrive. It is crucial to design a consistent care routine for your pooch and keep track of regular veterinary check ups to detect any health problems early on. When creating a care routine for your GSD puppy, pay special attention to the following factors: Exercise The black German shepherd is a highly energetic dog that needs at least one hour of intense exercise every day. Enrolling your puppy in agility classes is a great way to keep them exercised and can be a fun and entertaining experience for them. Games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, tug-of-war, and hide and seek are also great options and will keep your pooch exercised and entertained. Intellectual Stimulation Black German shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that can easily become bored, frustrated, and destructive when not mentally stimulated. A bored or anxious black shepherd can cause serious damage to your home and belongings. Companionship Loyal and devoted to a fault, black GSD puppies make superb family dogs and companions. They form strong bonds with their people and are happiest when they can spend time and interact with their families. While they are large and intimidating at first, these pups are loving companions that crave affection and attention. Black German shepherd puppies need company and are best suited for homes where someone is around all day. Grooming The black German shepherd is a high-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. If your pup has a medium-length coat, brush them two to three times a week to remove loose hair and keep their coat in pristine condition. Use a de-shedding tool to remove loose hair and minimize the shedding during spring and fall. To further reduce shedding, bathe your GSD with an anti-shed dog shampoo every two months or as necessary. You should also brush their teeth at least three times a week and trim their nails every other month. Diet An ideal diet for black German shepherds should be formulated for a large-sized dog with high energy. When choosing the best food for your pooch, make sure it contains higher levels of protein, a moderate amount of fat, and easily digestible complex carbohydrates. Keep in mind that black German shepherd puppies grow extremely quickly between the ages of four and seven months, which makes them susceptible to bone disorders. Feed your pup high-quality, low-calorie food to prevent them from growing too rapidly. Known Health Problems As a breed, German shepherds are considered generally healthy. Black GSD and all other German shepherds are prone to the same health problems, including: Hip Dysplasia: This is a hereditary condition that causes malformation of a hip joint. Affected dogs may or may not show clinical signs of this condition, but in most cases, dogs experience pain and lameness in one or both hind legs. Elbow Dysplasia: This is another hereditary condition commonly seen in large breeds. This condition is caused by varying growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow, resulting in joint looseness. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus: Also known as bloat, GDV is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dog breeds, particularly if they are fed one large meal a day, eat rapidly, drink a lot of water after eating, or exercise just after a meal. Degenerative Myelopathy: This is a progressive disease of the spinal cord. This condition affects the part of the cord that gives information to the brain regarding the rear legs. Lifespan The black German shepherd has an average lifespan of around 9 to 13 years. With proper care and regular veterinary checkups, these pups can reach their senior years in good health. Training A Black German Shepherd Puppy Black German shepherd puppies are highly intelligent and obedient, which makes them very easy to train. These pups are fairly easy to housetrain, and they also learn obedience commands after just a few repetitions. Like all other dogs, black German shepherds thrive on reward-based training and a lot of praise. Positive reinforcement training techniques are highly effective for training puppies and adult dogs and are much more reliable than dominance training. Besides training, you should start socializing your black GSD puppy as soon as you bring them home. Since these pups are naturally aloof with strangers, early socialization is essential and will help your dog to become friendlier to other people. Try to expose your puppy to as many people, places, situations, animals, children, and sounds from a young age to help them grow into an outgoing dog. Properly trained and socialized black German shepherd pups make wonderful companions to people of all ages and families with children. Due to their large size and highly energetic nature, these dogs are best suited for large homes with spacious, fenced yards. While they can live outdoors, black shepherds should primarily be kept indoors so they can regularly interact with their people and stay close to them. In addition, because of their high social needs and potential to develop separation anxiety, they thrive in families where someone is at home often and able to keep them company. However, when compared to other varieties, black German shepherds are quite rare and hard to come by. Finding a reputable breeder might require a bit of research on your part, but all the extra effort will pay off in the long run. Since black German shepherds are rare and in demand, be mindful of puppy mills and unethical breeders who just want to make a quick buck. However, the exact price depends on a lot of factors, namely the breeder, supply and demand in your area, and pedigree and quality of both parent breeds. Black German shepherds make wonderful family pets and companions. Naturally loyal and devoted to their owners, they like to be close to their people and spend lots of time by their side. Plus, due to their protective nature, black German shepherds make excellent watchdogs and will always feel the urge to watch over you and your family. The black German shepherd is a rare and absolutely stunning color variation of a standard German shepherd dog. Loyal and protective of their owners, these dogs make fantastic family companions and can also serve as vigilant guard dogs. If you want to bring a black shepherd pup home, be prepared to: Exercise your pooch for at least one hour every day Start training and socialization from a young age Groom your dog at least three times a week Do you own a black German shepherd dog? Just a few months ago, your little ball of fluff was tumbling around, getting into mischief. This article will help you determine when to switch your puppy to adult dog food, how puppy and adult dog foods differ , how to select the best adult dog food, and how to transition foods smoothly to ensure that your pup is set up for a life of good health. According to AAFCO, puppy foods should be higher in protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorous than adult dog foods. These macronutrients and minerals help support lean muscle and bone growth. They also provide enough caloric density to enable the puppy to grow and perform basic bodily functions such as breathing, digestion, and movement. Many puppy food manufacturers also include higher amounts of compounds like omega-3 fatty acids to support proper brain and eye development as your puppy ages. Large-breed puppies need specially formulated puppy foods that contain less fat , calcium, and phosphorous to moderate their rate of growth. This helps prevent skeletal diseases such as elbow and hip dysplasia that can result from growing too quickly. You need to ensure that your puppy has the extra protein, fat, and minerals they need to support their growth and development and prevent various bone, joint, brain, and eye disorders. But aside from breed size, you also need to consider whether they are spayed or neutered or if they are a highly active dog that needs more calories. Breed Size Because of their faster growth rate, smaller breeds such as Chihuahuas , Yorkshire Terriers , and Pugs reach adult size sooner than larger breeds such as Golden Retrievers , German Shepherds, and Dalmatians. The guidelines below will help you to determine when to start feeding adult dog food: Small breeds under 25 pounds when fully grown reach adult size at months of age. These breeds will be ready for adult dog food at months of age. Medium-sized breeds such as English Springer Spaniels , Australian Shepherds , and Border Collies are pounds when fully grown, and they reach adult size at months of age. With growth rates between those of small breeds and large breeds, medium-sized dogs will be ready for adult dog food around months of age. Large breeds are over 50 pounds when fully grown. There are many large breed dogs, from the Boxer to the Great Dane , so the point at which these breeds reach mature size and weight can vary between 15 and 24 months of age. With the wide range of breeds under this category and a generally slower rate of growth, these dogs will need to stay on puppy food until they are months old to ensure they have enough protein and other nutrients during this stage. They also need to get those nutrients in the proper ratio to support the growth and proper development of their larger skeletons. Activity Level Athletic dogs may benefit from staying on puppy formulas longer, as the extra protein supports lean muscle growth and function, and the extra fat and higher caloric density can allow energy for high-intensity activities. Spaying or Neutering Breed size is not the only factor when determining when to transition your puppy to adult dog food. Because puppy foods contain a higher calorie density, feeding the correct amount during the remaining months of puppyhood is very important to prevent obesity as the puppy matures into an adult. Spaying or neutering does not usually slow the growth rate of your puppy, but it may affect the growth plates in the bones of large breed puppies, setting them up for joint problems later in life. In addition, unspayed female dogs who will be bred early in life may need to stay on puppy food longer to support gestation and lactation following whelping. Switching Too Early or Too Late Because the timing of switching your puppy to adult dog food is so important, there can be negative consequences from both switching too late and switching too early. Dogs that are taken off puppy food too late may be more predisposed to obesity and associated health problems later in life, given the fact that puppy formulas have more fat and calories per cup than adult dog formulas. The extra protein and calories in puppy foods can also increase the rate of growth in certain dog breeds if they are not fed a breed-specific puppy food formula. If these breeds are left on puppy formulas too long, they can be more predisposed to developing joint problems in the future. Similarly, if your puppy is taken off a puppy formula too early, they may suffer from nutritional deficiencies and growth abnormalities, failing to reach adult size around the expected time and increasing their risk of future bone, joint, brain, and eye issues. How to Pick the Right Adult Dog Food When it is time for your puppy to transition to adult dog food, how should you go about selecting the best adult formula for them as they become young adults? The young adult stage is typically considered years of age, as middle age starts by year in many dog breeds. While most dogs are generally quite healthy during this stage in their lives, feeding them appropriately during their young adult years can help lower the risk of obesity, arthritis , and dental disease as they age. Choosing a Brand The many adult dog food companies are not all equal in terms of quality. Dry Food vs. Wet Food The next step is to decide whether you would like to feed your dog dry food, wet food, or a mixture of the two. Both types of food have positive and negative aspects, and the choice to use one, the other, or both depends on the specific needs of your dog. For example, wet food: Has a higher moisture content than dry food and may be better for dogs that do not drink much water. Has a lower calorie density per volume than dry dog food, allowing dogs to feel fuller on fewer calories, which helps control their weight throughout their lives. Is often more palatable and appetizing than dry food, so it may be a great option for picky eaters or for stimulating the appetite of dogs that are less interested in food. Can be beneficial for dogs with oral abnormalities or dental disease, as it is easier for them to chew. By contrast, dry food: Can be a more economical option than wet food. Is a great option for easier portion control and for dogs that tend to graze throughout the day rather than consume a full meal in one sitting, as dry food will not spoil as rapidly if left out for long periods of time. Is beneficial for dental health, as the crunchy pieces act as an abrasive against the teeth during chewing and help prevent tartar buildup and thus tooth and gum disease. Can be easily used as a tool in puzzle toys for enrichment and mental stimulation. Is be used in slow feeders for reducing the rate at which dogs are able to consume their meals. When your pup eats more slowly, the risk is lower of them swallowing too much air and developing bloat, a potentially dangerous condition. Nutritional Requirements The final step in selecting the best adult dog food diet is to examine the Guaranteed Analysis panel on the bag or can of food and ensure that the formula meets a few major nutritional requirements. Other formulas have glucosamine for joint health or probiotics for gut health. Some dogs are sensitive to chicken and do better on beef- or salmon-based formulas. If you are unsure of the additional needs for your dog outside of the key ingredients and nutrients listed above, consult with your veterinarian. This will help ensure gut regularity with less physical activity. Remember that dog treats and other sources of calories in the diet need to be included when determining the appropriate amount of food for your young adult dog. How to Switch Your Puppy to Adult Dog Food Once you have selected the best adult dog food for your puppy, you are ready to transition them slowly onto their new diet. Because rapid diet changes can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs, such as vomiting and diarrhea , it is recommended to introduce the new food slowly over a period of five days or so. Continue to feed your puppy as many times per day as they are used to throughout this process. If your puppy develops vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite, stop feeding the adult dog food and see your veterinarian. How Often to Feed Your Dog For large-breed puppies, it may be best for them to continue to eat three times per day. For medium-breed puppies, they should continue to be fed twice daily when they have been transitioned to adult dog food. For small-breed puppies, you may consider transitioning them to eating twice daily instead of three times per day after they are fully on adult dog food. This may involve providing more attention and playtime for your dog as they become accustomed to fewer feedings per day. Consider extra walks, extra playtime, or brushing to distract them from feelings of hunger. Some dogs may benefit from high-fiber adult dog food to increase feelings of fullness between meals. Your dog may also enjoy cleaned, raw fruits and vegetables such as sliced carrots, cucumbers, or apples without the core or seeds. If you have any questions about transitioning your puppy to adult dog food, contact your veterinarian. In addition, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist can be a great resource for any issues that come up, and they can help develop the best diet and feeding schedule for your new family member. Some examples of dry dog food are dog biscuits, kibble, and flaked cereals. Before serving dry dog foods to Bulldogs, warm water or broth is frequently added to this to improve the texture and enhance the flavor. Canned Wet Food: Canned wet food is sometimes preferable to dry food because it has a lot more moisture and thus will keep your dog hydrated. Moreover, wet dog food is also more likely to be appreciated by your English Bulldog puppy because it is usually more flavorful. However, wet food may increase the likelihood of dental issues. Homemade Diet: Homemade diets can help you save money. This diet also allows you to have more control over the macronutrients your dog consumes. As a result, with a homemade diet, you can rest assured that your dog is only consuming the best ingredients. Raw Diet: Raw dog food can be purchased as a frozen log, or it can simply be prepared at home. However, keep in mind that it should be prepared using quality meat and healthy fats. When it comes to choosing the right food for a Bulldog puppy, you need to be sure that it has high-quality protein to allow its body to function properly. If you accidentally drop something on the floor, these canines will gobble it up. However, some foods are incredibly toxic and dangerous for English Bulldogs to consume, even in small amounts. Here are some foods that you should avoid feeding your Bulldogs: Chocolate: This delectable human food includes theobromine , a poison that impairs the kidney, heart, and other important organ functions of a Bulldog puppy. If consumed in large amounts, xylitol can cause severe liver damage to your Bulldog. Raw Bread Dough: This is extremely poisonous. Milk and Other Dairy Products: Providing milk and other dairy products could lead to puppy diarrhea and other digestive system problems. These human foods may also set off food allergies, which may result in crusty scabs around the mouth of your dog. Grapes and Raisins: These may be enticing to dogs as treats or snacks, but they could also contain mold and fungus, which can result in gastrointestinal discomfort, seizures , lethargy, or kidney failure. Tomatoes: These contain tomatine , a poisonous alkaloid that can cause muscle weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of coordination, and seizures. Avocado: This tasty human food contains persin, which takes dogs some time to digest. It may cause severe stomach pain, breathing problems, and a buildup of fluid in the chest. Mushrooms: If your English Bulldog puppy consumes wild mushrooms, you should treat it as an emergency because it can result in neurological symptoms, kidney and liver failure, and even death. Macadamia Nuts and Walnuts: These delicious Hawaiian treats rank among the most hazardous human foods for dogs. These nuts can cause hind legs to become paralyzed for anywhere between 12 and 24 hours after consumption. Aside from the listed foods, there are other foods that your Bulldog puppy should stay away from. Therefore, when your dog transitions from a puppy to an adult dog and also when they get closer to seniority, it makes sense to switch to a different diet. It could take some trial and error to find the best food for them. You can use the following transition chart as a guide for your English Bulldog puppy: Day. While the feeding guide on the back of the bag of food is a good guideline on how much to feed, puppies will go through growth spurts where they will be hungrier and need to eat more. Feed your puppy so that they stay thin, but not emaciated. If you see ribs sticking out, then increase the amount you are feeding by 10 percent. If you have any questions about how much you should feed your puppy, talk with your veterinary care team. How long do I feed puppy food? Puppies should be fed puppy food until they are done growing. Puppies stop growing at different times based on their size: Small- and medium-sized puppies: These pups grow faster and are considered mature around 9 months of age. Large breed puppies: These pups take longer to be skeletally mature and are considered to be done growing around 15 months of age for large breeds, like Labrador Retrievers , and months of age for giant breeds, like Great Danes , Mastiffs and Newfoundlands. That means that you will need to feed large breed puppies a food specially formulated for their needs for longer than you will need to feed puppy food to small or medium breed puppies. Adults Photo: Chewy Studios Age 1 year to years Two of the most common questions puppy parents have are 1 how long to feed puppy food and 2 when to switch to an adult diet. What do adult dogs eat? Adult dogs need at least 18 percent of their daily calories to be protein, and at least 5. An adult dog can eat up to 50 percent of daily calories as carbohydrates, but 2. How to choose adult dog food With so many options available on the market today, it can be difficult to choose a food when you switch to adult dog food. The statement should say that the food has been found to be complete and balanced based on formulation or AAFCO feeding trials. The size of your dog: Another consideration when choosing a food for your dog is the size of your dog. If you have a large breed dog, feeding a food that has been formulated for large breed dogs, like Eukanuba Large Breed Adult Dry Dog Food , can help support joint health. Is the haircoat full and glossy? What about stool quality and quantity? If everything checks out, then the food is likely good for your dog. How much food to feed an adult dog When it comes to how much to feed, start with the feeding recommendations on the back of the bag and see how your dog does. How to switch to adult dog food The most seamless way to do this is to purchase a bag of adult food when you purchase the last bag of puppy food, and gradually mix the two dry foods together, increasing the ratio of the new kibble over the course of about a week. The important thing to realize is that because puppies are still growing, they need more calories and nutrition than adults. In fact, feeding an adult diet to a puppy could lead to nutritional deficiencies. Likewise, feeding a puppy diet to an adult could cause excessive weight gain and its related issues. This is important to avoid, since obesity is the most common nutrition-related issue for canines. Knowing when to switch to adult dog food will help your puppy grow into a happy, healthy dog. Most tiny dogs should reach their adult weight, such as it is, around months old. Fully grown, they generally weigh between 12 and 25 pounds, and they will typically reach this adult weight at months of age. These dogs will reach a total of around 25 and 50 pounds at around months of age. At months of age, these dogs will reach their adult weight of 50 and pounds. These dogs will typically reach their adult weight between 12 and 24 months. Puppy foods have greater quantities of certain nutrients, including calories, because puppies require more macronutrients and minerals than an adult dog of the same size and weight. This important stage of growth and development requires a lot of energy, after all! This is why puppies are at risk for nutritional deficiencies and malnourishment if they are fed adult dog food. Adult dog foods have been designed to accommodate the decrease of energy levels and growth that comes with maturity. For starters, puppies need more protein and fat than an adult dog of the same size. They also require higher concentrations of certain minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. For this reason, puppy food is more calorie- and nutrient-dense. You will find essential nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and chloride all in greater concentrations in puppy food. Sometimes puppy foods are also supplemented with things such as extra omega-3 fatty acids. These can support healthy eye and brain development. Keep in mind that larger breeds can be at a greater risk of developmental diseases as a result of overly rapid growth. This is why large breed puppy foods have a little less fat, calcium, and phosphorus. They also have a very carefully balanced ratio of calcium to phosphorus. This ensures that they develop and grow at an appropriate and healthy pace. With that in mind, the best way to transition is slowly. This can even potentially lead to your dog refusing or disliking that particular type of dog food, because they associate it with feeling sick. So ease into it. A few days later, increase the amount of adult dog food to 40 percent, and reduce the amount of puppy food to 60 percent. Follow this pattern of increasing the amount of adult dog food, and make sure that you are removing the same amount of puppy food that you are adding in adult food. And if you run into any difficulties getting your dog to eat the new food, make sure to check out our guide on how to get your dog to eat. Just make sure you make the switch at the appropriate time based on the breed of your dog. One breeder I know takes theirs off puppy food at 6 months. Everyone has their own idea as to what to do, and you can ask several vets and get different answers. I just said what we do and it works well for my bullies, you do something different and it works well for you. Dobermans and other breed of dog need puppy food longer, because they grow different than bullies. Everyone has their own idea as to what to do. Click to expand.Debating dog food is always futile because each dog is unique even within the same breed. My vet recommends Science Diet which, to me, is crap food. I don't debate him because he has lots of healthy patients following his recommended diet regimen. I normally don't go by vet recommendations when it comes to dog food. I do my own analysis by matching all my research on dog food with all my research on the dog breed and coming up with the typical baseline and adjusting from there depending on my specific dog determined by parentage and day-to-day observation. And, the month standard is typical for english bulldogs according to their growth rate and body structure, matched with the puppy formula from everything I've read on the topic. Of course, we adopted our one and only bulldog at age 3, so we never had to apply it. If I was to get a puppy, I wouldn't bother with puppy formula and go straight to all stages food. But that doesn't answer the thread topic. A Doberman is completely different. A Doberman typically achieves most of his weight and height before the first heat cycle. So that's typically 60 pounds and 24 inches by 6 months of age - a very rapid growth spurt - and they usually don't grow much more than that in the next 6 months, usually just filling out muscle, with a maturity level achieved by 12 months. Doberman baseline is only 9 months on the puppy formula and I always opt for the puppy formula for dobies due to this growth spurt, although we had our dogs on puppy food until 12 months because they were from what many would consider a "warrior" line and did not achieve close to their expected weight until then. Doberman do not have a weight standard - you may see AKC dogs between 60 and pounds - which is different from english bulldogs who have a standard of lbs. So, all this spiel just to say - this is what's typical, then know your specific dog and adjust accordingly. They are very people-orientated and form a strong bond with their owners and family members, meaning that if left alone for long periods of time they can suffer from separation anxiety. As indoor dogs, English Bulldogs are relatively low-maintenance and only require gentle daily exercising. Due to them being part of the Brachycephalic breeds short faced it is important to take extra precautions in the summer months, especially when exercising. They can overheat very easily so it is vital to keep them in cool and shaded areas within your household. A breed that loves their food but are at risk of becoming overweight easily if not given daily exercise. It has been known that English Bulldogs live longer if cared for correctly and fed a good, high quality diet to suit their individual needs. As they are a Brachycephalic breed they are more at risk of suffering from and developing allergies, so we would always recommend feeding them a grain free diet. This is due to the shape of their faces and the folds around their eyes and muzzle. Catching the problem early or preventing it from starting is important as skin allergies, especially an ear or eye infection, can be quite difficult to clear up once they have flared up or the longer you leave them. When you bring your new English Bulldog puppy home you should make setting up a routine a priority — this will help with the settling in period. You should stick to the food that the breeder has had the puppy on for the first week before gradually switching over, over a four-week period so your puppy does not experience digestive upset. Once your Bulldog reaches around eight to ten months old you can go onto the adult food and feed twice daily. It would also be beneficial to occasionally feed one of the other flavours from the sensitive range but we would recommend that the main part of the diet is the salmon. Grooming A low maintenance breed when it comes to grooming as they only require around three baths per year. They only shed a moderate amount of hair, but you should brush them weekly and you should clean in between their folds and wrinkles daily to prevent any bacteria causing infection. Thanks to its peaceful and loving nature, the popularity of the English Bulldog has soared in recent times. Through its displays of charm and affection, this is one breed of dog that is likely to bring love and warmth to any home. The potential benefits of raw Swapping Puppy Food Brands When you first bring your Bulldog puppy home you should feed him the same food that he was getting from the breeder or shelter for about three to four weeks. This will give him time to acclimate to his new surroundings and get used to being separated from his mom and siblings. Mix about three-quarters of the puppy food he eats now with one-quarter of the new food for the first two to three days.
