Whether you have a puppy or an older GSD you are most likely going to have to train your German Shepherd not to pull on leash. Leash pulling with German Shepherds is often a result of their curious nature compounded with their high energy. This is especially true in new environments where they tend to get over-stimulated wanting to sniff and survey everything around them. I know from experience that the more excited your dog is to walk the more pulling is going to occur. When Allie was a puppy the beginning of walks were like a pulling festival. However, once we got toward the middle of the walk and she was less excited she walked next to me naturally without any hassle. Their size makes a difference because this task gets more and more difficult the heavier they get. The most ideal time to engage in leash training is after exercise or active play. This is when your GSD has already expended excess energy and is going to better listen and focus. As per my example in the beginning of the article, if I had tried to leash train puppy Allie before her walk when she was all excited and worked up, both she and I would have gotten frustrated. But after her walk she was much calmer because her energy had been expended so it was easier to get the desired behavior from her. Home is a familiar environment that is less likely to get your GSD as excited as another new location. The key is that you want to minimize new things that will distract and over-stimulate your German Shepherd during training. A flat collar would be most comfortable for your German Shepherd. I prefer a belt-type flat collar because a clip-type collar might break under substantial tension. However, there are many other types of collars to consider depending on your needs. For your leash, select a sturdy one that feels comfortable in your hand and is comfortable to grip tightly. The ideal length of an everyday walking leash is 4 to 6 feet for most people. Get them over that excitement before starting your training sessions. Allie walks on my left side. The side closest to your dog will be your treat hand and the other would be your leash hand. Capture their interest by getting them to sniff the treat and then slowly walk a few steps to see if they will follow. If they do, give them the treat and praise them for doing a good job! Continue practicing this and gradually build up distance. Whenever your GSD attempts to pull, stop walking completely, and repeat the command. Set longer and longer distances and praise them for each milestone. Final Thoughts Teaching your German Shepherd to walk nicely on a leash is by no means a quick and easy task. Just be patient and enjoy the process. Once you perfect the walking behavior, you can safely and enjoyably engage in many other activities with your dog. Of course you will wish to lead train and socialise your puppy, but exercise on lead should be no more than that. Maximum time walking the dog at a fast trot of a puppy up to six months of age should be barely five minutes at one instance equivalent to a short stroll around your local block or park and then rest. Certainly they can play and romp in your back yard or in their kennel run, but they will stop when they feel tired, rest and then play again. The color and the controversy The white Pug is in fact yes a Pug. Contrary to what some negative breeders are saying, YES, they can be registered with the AKC, but because of the Pug parent Club, they are not permitted in the show ring. This is only reserved for the standard Fawn and Black colors at this time. So what is the big deal some might ask, or how did this color come into existence.Well good questions. Lets start with what is the big deal. To those of us serious about the Pug breed it is important to us, to enter in fresh and new bloodlines. For so many generations only the Fawn Pug was considered right and proper, and any other color or variation was put down right away. And we are finding out, that many of these colors and variations have genes attached which are now again being realized, because frankly, responsible breeders are not killing puppies, if they are too dark or too light anymore. The big deal is we are now seeing colors that represent the Pug breed in every way as far as structure and personality, but they have a different color, and in our opinion it is amazing and awesome. The white color is brilliant and unique. It also gives people with a great love of Pugs to have a colorful collection, while still enjoying the calm loving nature of the Pug breed. Now for the question of how this color came in to existence.Nobody truly knows. There is photographic evidence of white Pugs that belonged to royalty. BUT, we do not have proof in lineage that these dogs were bred, or used in any kind of kennel registry. Most white Pugs today can credit their heritage to a small breeder in Pennsylvania, that somehow had a White Pug born and then he duplicated it. His name was John Lapp, and some of his dogs made their way to the west coast where breeders there worked hard to duplicate the color, by using only Pugs in their programs and then breeding these whites into existing Pug lineages. With many "new" breeds being created for no other purpose than to make a quick buck, and shows zero heritage or lineage, using dogs that for whatever reason were not good enough to be bred up with their own kind. Please also do not believe some ignorant "show" breeders who state quite openly that white Pugs can not be registered, or are not Pugs, but an abomination created mixing with another breed. They are NOT. They only issue chance in the DNA is the coloration, which is apparently present.
