Depending on the mixture of the dark and fawn hairs, Brindle Frenchies can be very dark or very light. They usually have a black nose and dark colored eyes. Brindle is by far the oldest and most common pattern in French Bulldogs. To this day, it is one of the few accepted colors and patterns by kennel clubs along with fawn, white and pied as opposed to blue, chocolate and lilac colors. The first one has to be their funny and lovable personality! Frenchies are without the doubt one of the most social and friendliest dog breeds, who are also very smart and easy to train. Not to mention their cuddles are the best! Black brindle Frenchie puppies may also have a white chest or other small areas of white. Depending on the amount of fawn hairs, these streaks may appear either all over their bodies or on certain areas only. Blue brindle Frenchies are much more common than solid blue Frenchies, in fact the brindle patterns may appear on a blue puppy later on as they age. Blue brindle Frenchies also tend to have a white chest or other small areas of white. Pied Brindle Frenchies look the same except for the light fawn brindle patterns in the colored patches, mostly on their back. The way the patches are distributed and the proportion of the white and the other color on the coat can be quite variable from Frenchie to Frenchie. Chocolate brindle French Bulldog Chocolate brindle French Bulldogs have a chocolate brown base coat with light fawn streaks all over their bodies. The chocolate gene is considered rare in the Frenchie world so these puppies are quite unique. Reverse brindle Frenchies are much harder to come by than brindle Frenchies. Tiger brindle French Bulldog As the name suggests, tiger brindle French Bulldogs have a heavy pattern of light fawn streaks all over their dark-colored bodies, resembling the coat of a tiger. Lilac brindle French Bulldog Lilac Frenchies usually have a solid light grey coat, but sometimes light streaks may appear on them producing a lilac brindle French Bulldog. These Frenchies are very unique as their parents have to be blue and chocolate, or at least a carrier of the rare chocolate gene. Do Brindle French Bulldogs Shed? Brindle French Bulldogs, like any other Frenchie tend to shed throughout the year, more so in the spring and fall. During this period, they change their coat almost completely, replacing it with shinier, brighter and nicer fur. It's important to brush your puppy's hair at least two or three times a week using a Furminator. That will remove the undercoat that has fallen out but is still in the hair. When looking for a brindle Frenchie, you will most likely come across cheaper offers than the prices detailed above. Make sure to do your research and get your brindle Frenchie from a reputable breeder, and you will have a happy and healthy furry family member for at least a decade. But before you jump the gun, there are some things you should know about this breed that will help you make the right decision on whether this is the right pup for you. What Is a Brindle French Bulldog? A Brindle French bulldog is a rare breed with more captivating colors and patterns than a regular bulldog. Since brindle is a pattern and not a color they are in essence a patterned breed. These patterns are determined by their genes. And while several genes contribute to the brindle color, the K-Locus gene is mainly responsible. But there are several types of Brindle French Bulldogs that have distinct features and names specifically related to their pattern. They typically have a white or cream color coat with a pattern of dark patches. Blue Brindle French Bulldogs Blue Brindle Frenchies are known to have a blue grayish color coat along with a light brindle pattern. The difference here is they usually have at least one patch around their eyes. Their nose and nails are often a shade of brown while their eyes are often blue. Tiger Brindle French Bulldogs Tiger Brindles often resemble that of a tiger with their dark color coat and dense pattern of white hair. These lighter colors can sometimes go unnoticed, and they can be mistaken for one color bulldogs. Are Brindle French Bulldogs Purebred? According to the AKC, acceptable colors include fawn, white, brindle, and brindle and white. The reason they are on the more expensive side is that French Bulldogs are often difficult to breed. So pups are delivered via C-Section. Which adds to the expenses. Because Brindle French Bulldogs are so rare, you should do your research and consider all of your options before you purchase one. Breeders have to be careful when delivering these pups because of the common health-related issues that comes with them as well as common delivery problems that come with C-sections. You want to be weary of any breeder looking to make a quick buck and get rid of their puppies as soon as possible. Breeders within the program have been recognizes as being formal and precise when screening and breeding their pups. On average, Brindle French Bulldogs typically live anywhere from years. This is likely due to the number of health-related issues that are common to the breed. Common Health Problems of a Brindle French Bulldog The decision to get a French Bulldog is not one that should be taken lightly due to their complicated history with genetic health conditions. Other common health-related problems include: Allergies. Brindle relates to a specific patterning that can appear on a Frenchie. In order for the Brindle pattern to appear a certain set of genetics need to be present this is located in the K Locus. What Colors can a Brindle French Bulldog be? This is the combination which you will see most often on a French Bulldog and is also the most common combination seen. There are however a number of other colors that can have a Brindle effect. This requires the dilution gene which lightens the base coat color. This is often referred to as the Blue gene and is found in the D Locus. Due to this being a recessive gene it is much rarer and requires both parents to pass on the coloring. The Brindling effect on a Blue coat will lead to lighter and darker shades of Blue throughout. Breeders often try to avoid the Brindle pattern but it is highly popular with pet owners due to the beautiful patterns it can produce. Reverse Brindle French Bulldog Reverse Brindle relates to a phenomenon where the Brindle effect appears to be in reverse due to larger areas of lighter color. Whilst this would appear as though it would be down to separate genetics it is no different to a regular Brindle. The amount of Brindle appearing on a dog can vary wildly which leads to some being described as Reverse Brindle. Whilst these parts of the Frenchie will not be Brindle it does not stop the rest of the coat from showing the Brindle effect. This can result in the darker areas of coat being Brindle with White areas. This can create a very unique look in that there are patterned spotted areas on a most white dog. Similar to other shades these can also be affected by the brindle pattern. You will however be able to note brindling of the Lilac coloring. This relates to the Brown gene also known as Testable Chocolate and the Cocoa gene. These are very similar in looks and the only way to tell the difference is usually through a DNA test. You should expect to see lighter shades of chocolate mixed in with darker in this coloring. A standard brindle Frenchie is likely to be the cheapest type of French Bulldog available. Once you start mixing in rarer colors the price is likely to rise but still be below there non brindle versions. This is due to Brindle being undesirable in the eyes of a number of breeders who are breeding purely for coloring. The below gives an idea of the prices you should expect to see from a reputable breeder. However if they were crossbred then it is perfectly reasonable that those offspring could also be Brindle. It is therefore important if you want certainty to look at the lineage and you can also find out more information through DNA testing. They were originally bred from the English Bulldog breed and were referred to as Toy Bulldogs. It was the lace industry cantered around Nottingham where they were at the height of popularity. They were largely migrated to France along with the lace industry itself where they were renamed Bouledogue Francais. From here they were popularised and often referred to in tandem with the nightlife of Paris at the turn of the 20th Century. There are many iconic images of women working in Parisian Brothels accompanied by their French Bulldogs and it was captured within postcards of the time. Eventually the popularity of this breed began to spread worldwide and has been popular amongst a range of people. They were once the pet of choice of Tatiana Romanov of the Russian Royal Family and there is even one recorded as going down sadly on the titanic. Whilst good breeding can alleviate some of the issues below is a list of common health problems, how to spot them and manage them if possible. Allergies Whilst not unique to Frenchies they are known to suffer more than other breeds. Also it can show through watery eyes, ear infections or sneezing. If you suspect allergy issues it is best to discuss with a vet around possible treatments. This usually results in snoring and noisy breathing. It can however lead to retching, regurgitaion and vomiting and it certainly lowers their tolerance to heat. Skin Fold Dermatitis Whilst we love their wrinkles and skinfolds it can lead to issues within these folds. Ear Infections Due to the shape of the French Bulldog they can have issues in keeping their ears clean. Often these areas become breeding grounds for bacteria. In order to clean them the first rule is not to put anything inside the ear, this often just compacts any dirt within the ear. It is best to use an ear cleaner to break down the dirt. Corneal Ulcers As a result of the eyes standing more predominately on their face they are at risk of eye issues. They can also be born with small amounts of tissue sticking out of their eye.
