It's left open. He goes in during the day when I'm at work but I leave him out at night. He fusses once in but goes in pretty easily. Sunny can be bitey in play and will need a family that can handle this. He is still learning that he can not have my food. He has not counter surfed but he does want what you have! Sunny isn't barky. He barks for a few minutes after going in his crate and if new ppl or dogs come in the house. We have not met any kids. However the home he came from had kids. Sunny seems to be doing better with eating. We feed in morning and night. We have added wet food and joint supplements to his food. His hips pop. They ride great in the car. Sunny does bark at people and dogs he sees in the yard or house who are familiar but ultimately wants to meet them and play. Sunny does also do this on walks but has become a lot better with training and exposure. He did good getting in a bath. Wants to drink out of the shower hose. No thunderstorms yet. Sunny definitely needs training. Group training would be good for Sunny. He knows sit but doesn't always want to sit! We have introduced, stay, lay, leave it used a lot on walks to help with barking with me which is essentially heel and come. He has not mastered any of it. He does great walking with a gentle lead. Sunny is getting better! We use a gentle lead and he does better with not pulling. We don't have a favorite game. Favorite toy anything he can chew. He is a big chewer. Benebones and nylabones. We don't allow squeaker or plush toys or tug rooted right now because he was a little obsessive, harder to redirect and liked to eat them as he destroyed them he likes lick mats, kongs and toppls. Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog with two copies of the b gene will actually look brown. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little b gene to produce chocolate puppies. Like this: Statistically, one quarter of their litter would be chocolate colored. And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. And — you guessed it — we call them E genes. Just like B genes there are two versions of the E gene, big E and little e. Big E is the dominant gene. It does not interfere with the B genes. Little e is the recessive gene. It has the potential to mask the B genes that would otherwise give us black or brown coats. And the result is a yellow dog. How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate Only the little e gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. It could have two dominant genes EE two masking genes ee or one of each Ee. Only the middle of these three dogs will be yellow. Nine Different Possible Labrador Genotypes! Every Labrador has a combination of B and E genes — called their genotype. There are nine different possible genotypes. Here they are in full: Can you see why each combination of genes turns out the way it does? Because as you can see, the second dog down the list may look black but he could throw brown puppies, and the fourth dog down the list may look black, but he could throw yellow puppies. The fifth dog down the list is also black but he could throw yellow and brown puppies. Puppy colors are easier to predict when both parents owe their appearance to the recessive genes b or e. Mating Two Yellow Labradors Two yellow Labradors mated together will never throw brown or black puppies. All their offspring will be yellow. This is because yellow dogs do not possess the big E gene which is needed to switch off the masking effect. Mating Two Chocolate Labradors Two brown Labs mated together will never throw black puppies because brown dogs do not have the big B gene. But two chocolate Labs can produce yellow puppies, if each of the parents carries the little e gene — like this: In the mixed litter, statistically one of half of the puppies will be chocolate and one half yellow. Depending on their genotype, two black Labradors can indeed have yellow or chocolate puppies. Remember from our grid above that there are four different possible genotypes for a black Labrador. The genotype refers to the genetic code that the dog carries. And the four different possible black genotypes down the side to represent the father. Inside the grid are the puppies that could be born from each combination. If and only if, both parents carry a little e gene, then some of the puppies may be yellow. Remember that your puppy needs two little e genes one from each parent in order to be yellow. If only one of two black dogs carries the little e gene, all their puppies will be black. Yes it is, check out the bottom right hand square in the diagram above! Notice that it can only happen if both parents dogs have this genotype: EeBb. In other words, they both carry a little e and a little b. This is good example of how complicated, and unexpected, Labrador colors can be. It's essential that visiting children are supervised by you, they sit while holding puppies, they are gentle and they listen and understand their parents. We have ongoing projects so it's not safe for children to explore our property, run through the rock areas, play near the rock edges on the grass or climb on things. As long as your visiting children understand it's for their protection and they listen we love having them visit too. Puppies love to run and play. Part of this running and playing is nipping and running off hoping they will get chased in return. It's very normal for a puppy to do this because this is how puppies play all day with each other. Part of puppy training as a puppy grows and develops is to train a puppy to not behave this way with children. Please explain to your visiting children that a puppy chasing and nipping will essentially stop once they stop running. The simple process of running can make a puppy excited and ready to follow and play. For this reason we do not want children running around the yard and we prefer they wear long clothing covering their legs incase a puppy nips them. Corbin has come a LONG way since he arrived in Canada last summer and moved into a home for the first time in his life. He was a feral dog in Texas in his previous life, and lived with his sister on the edges of society, always between people, surviving by not being caught until one day he was. Suddenly this regal dog found himself trembling on the cold hard floor of a shelter, on the list to be killed. Its easy to understand why its hard for Corbin to feel safe around anyone but other dogs, but for the past year hes been developing an appreciation for life as a domestic house dog and his true character has slowly been emerging. Corbin will always feel most comfortable in the company of other dogs, and loves most of the usual things dogs love. Hes wild about going on walks, especially in the forest, and will happily spend his day hunting and harassing rodents. He loves sprinting freely across a grassy yard now, something he never had the chance to do in Houston. A frozen marrow bone in his crate delights him for a few hours of luxurious chewing. Watching him revel in life is an absolute joy! He enjoys head and butt scratches, and will sometimes even ask for affection. However, the instinct to stay out of reach runs deep in this handsome dog. He will not come when called; he will at best follow other dogs who do, but even then will stay at distance from accompanying humans. He isnt at all aggressive in the least, just very shy and wary. Every day he grows more confident, so much so that now hes ready to take on any bicycles and pickup trucks that have the nerve to pass him on the street. Corbins best life includes a large fenced-in yard and at least one, preferably more, other friendly dogs. Hes pretty curious about most things, even if hes a bit scared, so hed probably do ok in a either suburban or rural environment. A busy city would be too much for someone whos afraid of people getting close enough to touch him. Hes not a dog to adopt if youre looking for someone to play fetch with. Corbins the boy for someone whos content to make a deserving dogs dreams come true, where he can lounge peacefully in the sunshine, chase chippies and explore the neighbourhood with his pack mates. Corbin was born with bad hip dysplasia on one side, and doesnt like to use his rear right leg. He still gets around fine on 3 legs and can run faster than you!
