So, how did breeders even come up with the idea of a miniature version of the Lab? Like with any other miniature version of one dog, there are a couple of ways miniature Labradors can be bred. However, we advise you to do your research right from the start to see if it really is a purebred Labrador. Unfortunately, many of these small dogs are created today as a result of crossbreeding. So, breeders crossbreed Labradors with some other smaller dog breed, resulting in a dog that looks like a Labrador, but in a smaller package. Today, there are various Labrador mixes , and we think that many of them are wonderful dogs, but these dogs should not be sold under the name of mini Labrador. Crossbreeding is quite a complex process that should only be undertaken by experienced and educated breeders. Unfortunately, many breeders today put quick money first, while not paying enough attention to the health records of the dogs they intend to crossbreed. These are all things that anyone thinking of adopting a Labrador needs to consider before they make a commitment. But there is something else about Labradors that has led to the rise of the so called miniature Labrador. The Miniature Labrador — The Appeal of Downsizing Dogs One thing that can be problematic for families and individuals who would like to share their lives with a Lab is their size. They are big, sometimes bumbling dogs. As a result, those who do not have the space, time, or budget to house, entertain, and feed a large dog might have to rule out Labradors if they want a well-adjusted, healthy companion. So the perfect solution, at least on the face of it, is a Labrador with all the appeal the breed holds, just smaller. Well, it may not be as simple as that. There are a couple of ways this can happen. First, some Labradors are just naturally small. For example, people come in all shapes and sizes. Some of us are tall, with broad shoulders and thick legs. Others are quite short in stature and petite in build. Somewhere in the middle is what you would call an average-sized person. So while we are used to seeing average-sized Labradors, there are some that will just be a little smaller. It is important to note that the little frame of these smaller Labs is not the result of a genetic mutation, malnourishment, or any other condition that makes their life more challenging than normal. These Labradors, while smaller than average, are not likely to be vastly different from a regular-sized Labrador. Therefore, these small Labradors are different to the miniature Labradors we are discussing in this article. The Miniature Labrador Miniature Labradors are actually dwarfs. Dwarfism is a genetic condition that is known and documented in Labradors. There are a few different ways in which this dwarfism can come about. First, the Labrador could have inherited the genes which lead to dwarfism from its parents. Labradors that have dwarfism due to the SD1 gene will have bent legs. Those that have the SD2 gene do not have the same bent legs, but their legs will be shorter. Alternatively, a miniature Labrador could be suffering from a problem with their pituitary gland. All of these conditions come with related health problems , such as retinal dysplasia , an eye condition which can leave the dog blind. A Labrador born with dwarfism will need a lifetime of specialized care and attention. Breeding dogs on purpose to have such conditions is clearly not in the best interest of the dog. Miniature Labrador Size As we have seen, miniature Labradors are not a breed. Discounting Labradors which are just smaller than normal, these miniature Labradors are dogs with health problems. As such, the size of a miniature Labrador full grown cannot really be predicted. Even when scientists studied a group of dogs with the same genetic mutation that leads to dwarfism, termed SD2, the size of the affected dogs could not be reliably predicted, as the outcomes were so variable. Miniature Labrador — Health Concerns We have touched on some of the issues that so called miniature Labradors are likely to encounter. Most commonly, dogs with the genetic mutations which lead to dwarfism will also have eye problems. However, the stunted bone growth in these dogs also means that their gait and ability to move around freely will very likely be adversely affected. Miniature Labrador Puppies If you have seen Labrador pups up for sale that are being marketed as micro, mini, toy, or anything else along those lines, a high degree of suspicion and caution is in order. As we have discussed, there are a few possibilities as to how these dogs have been shrunk. Most of them involve a degree of unfairness to the dog, and even to the prospective owner. First, the dog could be small because it is suffering a genetic disorder, as we discussed above. Second, the dog may not be small at all. Fake Mini It is not unheard of for these toy puppies to just be regular pups, which will grow into full-sized dogs. Try a deterrent to prevent your dog from chewing or biting. If all else fails, there are lots of products designed to deter your dog from bad biting behavior. How do they work? Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. As your Labradoodle puppy develops their adult coat and out of their puppy coat at about 6 to 12 months. Doodle coat will start to thicken and mat, this is the time to start grooming. When the pup coat is changing to their adult coat Puppy may lose a little hair and the coat may become lighten or darken. A change in curl or wavy will happen as the coat matures. Do NOT shave puppy coat off! We usually only try to use the shavers on the tummy and sanitary areas but scissors cut everywhere else. It is important is to know your groomer or have a groomer that is recommended. It is always important to leave their coat longer on the head, face, and tail. It looks good if the tail is full and top of the head is full and ears are trimmed up. I always talk with the groomer and give them firm instructions. No shaving the face or ears or paws or tail. We groom our dogs ourselves. We sometimes leave the legs a little longer with poodles it is called leaving the pants on and or leave their paws and ankles with a bit longer coat. It can be fun to give them a whole new look with a little different cut. Buy wide-tooth combs and open wirer brush and the scissors with a round tip. It is a fun coat, that you can leave long and just carefully trim around faces. Take to a groomer and you can have a full groom cut down to an inch or two or whatever you want. Comb When you brush the coat, make sure you brush in the opposite direction of the hair growth. This will allow you to remove the old hair better. Make sure you pick a comb with wide teeth on one end and fine on the other. Detangler As your pet grows into a new coat, the old hair can knot up. This is when a detangler is needed. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars.
