Temperament and Behavioral Characteristics Having a cheerful and loving disposition, they are amicable and get along well with people of all ages beginning from children to the elderly folk as well as other dogs and pets. They enjoy being in the company of their family members, also showing eagerness to please and satisfy their owners. In fact, leaving them alone for prolonged period may affect their personality in a negative way. They are great attention seekers loving to be noticed by their masters always—a quality that might compel them to be jealous of the little ones in the family. The barking trait of the American Eskimo dog and Poodle is highly inherent in this breed making them let out a howl the moment they spot an unfamiliar face, hear any strange noise or are suffering from pangs of loneliness. Though they have a good compatibility with children, it is essential to teach the kids to handle them with care, thus requiring an adult supervision during their interaction with these dogs. Just like its American Eskimo parent, this breed too enjoys cold weather, while some of them might also have fun playing in the snow. Care Exercise They do well in homes and apartments provided they are exercised on a regular basis. Taking them for a brisk walk or engaging them in exciting games would be helpful in ensuring a healthy physical and mental development. However, do not over exercise them as they tend to get exhausted after thirty minutes of running. Grooming Though the American Eskimo-Poodle mix sheds less, its coat should regularly be brushed to prevent the curls from getting tangled. A slicker brush would be appropriate for this purpose. Bathe your pet only when required, also keep its teeth, eyes and ears clean to check infection of any kind. Trimming and clipping of the coat should be occasional depending on the hair type. In fact, those with a wavy, long and curly hair would require a haircut quite frequently mainly during the winters in comparison to the rest. Health Problems Though it is not known to suffer from any serious health concerns, it might have some of the ailments of its parents such as hip dysplasia, luxating patella and Progressive Retinal Atrophy American Eskimo or epilepsy, thyroid problems and gastric dilatation-volvulus Poodle. It also has chances of contracting eye infections at frequent intervals. The Eskipoo puppies should be imparted with socialization and obedience training to help them develop a pleasing personality. The trainer should be firm and patient enough to handle this active breed well. You can also teach your pet to housebreak and help him get rid of separation anxiety if it is too high in him. Feeding It is essential to provide the Eskipoo with dry dog food divided into equal meals. Apart from this make sure you give him a well-balanced diet having sufficient amount of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and other minerals. Is the Eskipoo right for you? The Eskipoo dog breed is a cross between the American Eskimo and Poodle. These dogs are small in size, with round eyes that are mostly blue, with a short black muzzle, floppy ears, and a dense coat. Due to its happy temperament and good nature, it has been a popular pet choice for all ages. The Eskipoo is believed to have come into existence in the late 20th century. However, little is known as who first bred the Eskipoo and when. Some believed it could first be traced back to Egyptian and Roman times, while some researchers believe they originally came from Germany. What does an Eskipoo look like? An Eskipoo is a small-sized dog with a round head. It has a floppy and large triangular poodle-style ears and a black nose. Its eyes can either be brown or blue. First, you can get an Eskipoo with a short and smooth curly coat like a Poodle. Second, you can have an Eskipoo with a long and thick coat like an American Eskimo. Most of the time, their coat is medium-length and could either be quite dense or way with a double layer. Since they often have a dense coat, this breed is more suitable for colder environments. The Eskipoo is also available in many coat colors. Below is the rundown of their available colors. White: This is the most common color available for an Eskipoo. Black: You can also see Eskipoos with black-colored coats. Some have pure black color, while some can have tints of blue or red. Brown: They also come in a variety of shades of brown that range from light to dark brown. Cream: They also come in light-off white or deep tan color of cream. Grey: Some Eskipoos have grey coats, or sometimes their coat changes to grey color before they turn five years of age. What is the Eskipoo temperament? When you make an Eskipoo your pet, you can expect it to be affectionate, playful, energetic, and gentle. Because of their friendly and cheerful personality, they can be a great addition to your family. Their size makes them ideal for apartment, house, or condo living as long as they have adequate time to get sunshine and fresh air and go for an exercise outside. Additionally, their jolly and loving disposition makes them suitable for all ages, including elders and children. But always remember to supervise them if you let them play with children, especially the toddlers. Moreover, if you have other dogs in the household, the Eskipoo can easily get along with them, as long as you keep them socialized with each other. There is a downside, though, in their clingy nature. As a result, they can get bored and start chewing on your house furniture or bark excessively. This breed also tends to bark or howl at unfamiliar sights, faces, or sounds. But this can be resolved with proper training. Senior citizens or retirees who love a gentle yet fun-loving pooch and challenge themselves with moderate activity during the day can greatly benefit from the Eskipoo dog. Is an Eskipoo a good family dog? The Eskipoo is an incredible companion dog who will give you love, loyalty, and affection, making them a good family dog. Their playful nature makes them a joy to be around. They also do well with children. They like to lick your child in their little fingers and head and cuddle them. How big does Eskipoo get? Eskipoos can grow up to 9 and 16 inches .How much does Eskipoo weigh? They can weigh between 10 and 20 pounds 4. Does Eskipoo shed? Depending on their inherited traits from their parents, they can be curly and single-layered like the Poodle or fluffy and thick-layered like the American Eskimo. Sometimes, their coat is in between. Even so, to avoid tangling or matting their coats, you need to brush them frequently using a slicker brush. Moreover, Eskipoos rarely drools. But if they do excessive drooling, it may be a sign of a problem that needs medical attention from a veterinarian. How often should you bathe an Eskipoo? Once every 2 to 3 months is adequate; however, they often need brushing to keep their coats in good shape. The recommended brushing is between 4 to 5 times per week. What are the grooming requirements of an Eskipoo? As mentioned earlier, this breed is low maintenance. To take care of its coat, you need to brush it at least 4 to 5 times per week. The recommended brush to use is a soft brush and a wide-tooth comb. Again, bathing is only required once every 2 to 3 months. Only bathe them if dirt is visible in their coat. The reason for not bathing them all the time is to preserve any natural oil from being washed out, which keeps its coat naturally shiny. If it takes after its Poodle parent, you also need to bring it to a professional groomer every 2 to 3 months for a haircut. In terms of brushing their teeth, you should do it daily. Their nails, however, should be trimmed every two weeks. You should also regularly check their ears and eyes and remove any dirt around them to reduce any risks of infection. Does an Eskipoo bark a lot? Eskipoos are social dogs who love to be in the company of humans. They hate to be left alone and can become destructive to your belongings or bark excessively when this happens. They also bark a lot when they see unfamiliar faces, hear unusual sounds, or experience a different environment. But with proper training over time, this behavior can be changed or minimized. Are Eskipoo hypoallergenic? But, this is only true if they inherited the genes of their Poodle parent. If this is the case, prepare for some shedding. The shedding is most especially experienced in-between seasons. Having an American Eskimo dominant gene will give them a thicker coat and more hair to shed. If you have allergies, make sure you get the one whose genes are more dominant to its Poodle parent. Similarly, you can try to adopt it for a few days and see if your allergies respond to it. Since Eskipoo is a high-energy dog, they will require a healthy diet of excellent quality kibble. This breed is prone to having dental issues, so giving them dry kibble is strongly recommended to keep their teeth strong and healthy. You can also give them wet food if their dental issues make it impossible for them to chew dry kibble. Eskipoo behavior problems Generally, Eskipoos are great and lovely dogs to have when trained well. However, there are potential issues in their behavior when their training goes awry. Below are some of the most common behavioral problems in Eskipoos. Too much barking There is a potential behavioral problem with an Eskipoo barking a lot. This means their potential as apartment dogs can be limited. They have an innate ability to bark at the signs of trouble. Suffer from separation anxiety Eskipoos need attention most of the time. If left alone for a long period, they have the tendency to be depressed and have separation anxiety. This leads to them being destructive to your belongings. Stubborn Another thing you need to know about Eskipoos is their stubbornness. This breed wants to get things their way. Too Energetic This breed has so much energy, which means they need a lot of daily exercise and playtime. This means that you need to be ready to invest lots of time, affection, and energy to make them feel loved and maintain their well-being. Is Eskipoo easy to train? The potential issues stated above of the Eskipoos mean that owners may need to seek professional help, especially when these behavioral problems start to manifest. Training is important at an early age, especially in the areas of separation training and socialization. Eskipoos are people pleasers, which makes them easy to train. But they need a trainer who can teach them with patience and consistency. They respond very well to positive reinforcements. Hence, in training them, you should provide them with treats such as food and even vocal praises to reward them if they do a great job. These dogs are also pretty intelligent, adding to the ease it takes to train them. Their parents are both working dogs, which means they thrive when given a job to do. And often, they do a good job to please their owners. What is the average lifespan of Eskipoos? Eskipoos, on average, can live up to 10 to 13 years. What are the common health problems of Eskipoos? The average lifespan of an Eskipoo can be reduced, however, if they suffer from health problems. The following are the most common health problems of Eskipoos. This condition is a common occurrence among dogs, but smaller breeds are more affected. This condition can be treated with medication and physical therapy. But, in severe cases where your dog feels significant pain, surgery may be necessary. Cataracts As your Eskipoo age, it may develop cataracts as humans do. Unfortunately, no pill or eye drop can reverse the damage in the lens. Squamous cell carcinoma Squamous cell carcinoma is developed due to the lesions of the nail bed or toe of the dog. When the lesions get irritated, it may lead to some serious condition known as Squamous cell carcinoma. Only surgery can heal this condition. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in dogs. Seizures often happen when the brain changes its activity, such as when the dog gets too excited for feeding or as they wake up or fall asleep. Exercise after eating increases its risk. And since Eskipoos are known to be hyperactive, they tend to develop this medical condition. How much does an Eskipoo cost? The cost of Eskipoos will always vary on several factors such as their breeder, the location, and of course, the supply and demand. If you live in a place where Eskipoos are popular but with only a few breeders, the price for each pup may increase, especially if you want a healthy and quality dog. Some breeders also charge more if an Eskipoo has rare characteristics such as having blue eyes or colors of apricots and browns. Where to buy or adopt an Eskipoo dog? If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, you can buy from reputable and trustworthy breeders. However, if you opt to find Eskipoos in rescue centers, your chances of getting them are high. Hence, they tend to abandon them and leave them in a rescue shelter. If you want to find an Eskipoo pup in a rescue shelter, you need to understand their personality and needs and think long if you have the commitment and ability to meet their needs. If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, the best places are the following websites. Lifespan Sociability You should know all there is to know about this mixed dog breed before deciding to buy one and introduce it to your household. There is no set price for these cute mixed breed dogs, but you can expect to spend quite a bit when it comes time to adopt one. The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for an Eskapoo pup is health. This will make the price of your Eskapoo pup even higher. Veterinarian costs, pet essentials like food and water bowls, and accessories like toys and treats are also expenses that need to be considered. This is one of the things that makes them such great family dogs! They Handle Season Changes Well Due to the hypoallergenic and water-resistant characteristics of the Poodle and the thick double-coat of the American Eskimo, Eskapoos can handle cold and damp weather well. They are also built to deal with warmer weather, which makes them great four-season dogs. They Are Food Motivated This mixed breed is food motivated, making it easy to train them with the use of treats. Food will get them to do just about anything you want them to do, whether that means fetching your newspaper in the morning or sitting quietly by the door when a visitor enters your home. Their curiosity can get the best of them, at times but keeping them busy will minimize destruction within the house. A house with a fenced yard is ideal for these frisky dogs, but they can live in an apartment setting if they can walk and play outside regularly. This mixed breed can be easily trained, and they are always yearning to learn something new. Families that are regularly away from the house all day may not be the best fit for this dog. Their playful attitude makes them fun to be around, and their social personality makes it easy to introduce them to strangers. These dogs are alert and vocal, making them excellent watchdogs at home. They are loyal to their family members and will stay by your side at every opportunity. Are Eskapoos Good for Families? If they take more after their Poodle parent, they could have hypoallergenic qualities that family members with allergies can appreciate. They can also learn how to get along with cats, but they need to be trained not to chase them. A post shared by Andrey Bityukov a. Here is what you should know before adopting a new Eskapoo puppy of your own. They do tend to have sensitive digestive systems, so choosing a grain-free food will minimize the risk of constipation and nausea. After a year of age, you can switch to a quality food made for adults or all life stages. Your dog will expect a long walk every day, in addition to time playing fetch or doing another physical activity outdoors. After outdoor exercise, your Eskapoo should have no problem relaxing inside with the rest of the family. Interactive toys should be provided on rainy days and during times when your pooch needs to stay indoors more than usual. Obedience training can begin as early as about 2 months old , so you should start as soon as you bring your new pooch home. They need to practice obedience training throughout their lifetime to reinforce the behaviors that you expect of them. When older, Eskapoos can do well on the agility course, which offers exercise, mental stimulation, and a great opportunity to socialize with other dogs. If they take after their Poodle parent, they will likely need haircuts regularly to keep tangles and mats at bay. If your Eskapoo takes more after their American Eskimo parent, you can expect them to shed frequently and you will likely have to brush or comb them daily. But unfortunately, there are several serious conditions they are prone to that you should be aware of. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? These fluffy little dogs are affectionate and gentle. People tend to fall in love with their playful, energetic personalities. Although the Eskipoo is not currently recognized by the AKC, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. These little dogs love to play, love to cuddle, and love nothing more than getting attention from their favorite humans. Their affectionate, gentle nature and playful, friendly personality make them a great fit for families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they do tend to be open and friendly with strangers once introduced, they also tend to bark to alert you of people, animals, etc. Although they are high-energy dogs, Eskipoos are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes with fenced yards where they can run. Also, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. Because these small dogs bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not do well with long periods of time alone. This can also make them prone to separation anxiety if you do not work on this with them when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an Eskipoo include luxating patella , diabetes, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, and eyelash abnormalities. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents, and about any health tests that have been done. Eskipoos are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Although they can get bored easily, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They thrive on positive praise and reward, and tend to work hard to gain attention from you. The Eskipoo coat still ranges from the curly Poodle coat to the longer, thicker American Eskimo coat. An American Eskimo coat will shed moderately year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath is all this coat needs. Nail trims once or twice a month keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily dental care , like brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste, helps prevent dental diseases later in life. Although these dogs tend to be little, they are not couch potatoes at all. In fact, they are high-energy dogs that require walks, playtime, and some time to run every day to be happy and healthy. Thankfully, they also tend to be versatile and athletic dogs that are up for almost anything if it means spending more time with you. Just make sure puppies finish growing and developing, and you get vet approval, before you tackle more intense, higher-impact activities. A fully-grown Eskipoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Eskipoos generally live for years. An Eskipoo is also referred to as a Pookimo and an Eskapoo. Featured Eskipoo Article. Active families of all sorts; adaptable to apartments Temperament: Intelligent, Playful, Affectionate The Eskapoo inherits traits from both of their parents. You could have a dog that is very similar to a Poodle or nothing like one. They are usually medium-sized dogs, but their weight can vary widely. Most are the descendants of a Toy Poodle, but other types of Poodles can also be used. These dogs are pretty intelligent, which often makes them easy to train. They are active and require a bit of mental stimulation, though, so they can require more time from their owners. Because both of their parents are working dogs, they thrive when given a job to do. Many of them love water, taking after their Poodle ancestry. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Few breeders specialize in this breed. The large majority of breeders produce purebred dogs or one of the more popular mixed breeds. Most of the time, these puppies will be most common at shelters and rescues. Of course, the odds of a specific mixed breed showing up at an animal shelter near you are low. You may have to expand your search range and do a bit of travelling to get the dog you want. You may be able to locate a breeder or two that produce these puppies. However, this does mean that you have to tell them what to do. They need to work their brains and flex their intelligence. They are not dogs that you can leave alone for long periods. Great ways to keep them entertained include things like obedience training, puzzle toys, and canine sports. Setting up a miniature agility course in your backyard is a great way to keep them busy and entertained. On top of mental stimulation, these dogs need quite a bit of physical exercise as well. They work best for active families who have enough time to exercise these dogs properly. Barking and chewing are a common problem if they are not well taken care of. These dogs often keep their playfulness into adulthood. They often enjoy playtime over cuddling on the couch. They work best for families that would instead take a hike than a cuddle on the couch, as well. Generally, the Eskapoo is pretty calm and not extremely hyperactive — like some toy breeds. They do behave well inside and adapt to apartment living as long as their other needs are met. Without proper training, they can be a bit noisy. They will bark at people as they walk by and then love them the second they walk in the door. Active families with many people coming and going are often best, as this decreases the amount of time the dog is alone overall. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their smaller size does lead to some difficulty with more minor children. This can lead to fear-based barking. One bad situation can lead to the dog not trusting small people for the foreseeable future. With the proper socialization, these dogs can get along with small children as long as they are supervised. They are great dogs for families with older children, especially if they are active and spend time romping around in a fenced-in backyard. They will happily follow children around and play, even well into their adult years. They are an excellent choice for elementary-aged children due to their smaller, manageable size. However, active families are best. They are good with dogs of all sorts as long as they are socialized at an early age. Like all dogs, they need to be introduced to other puppies starting at a young age to ensure that they know how to communicate with other canines appropriately. Otherwise, they will often be fearful of other dogs, which can cause aggression. However, when introduced to a wide variety of different breeds, they will often do just fine with smaller and larger dogs. Many of them are pretty pack-oriented and do best when they are with other dogs. They often have a pretty high prey drive, making them unsuitable for homes with cats and similar pets. They will chase these animals, especially since they have a high activity need. Of course, they will also chase other small pets, like rabbits. They can often stay healthy on a high-quality, commercially available dog food. Look for foods with high amounts of meat. The ingredient list of each food starts with the highest ingredient by weight and moves down from there. Check each ingredient list to ensure that the first few ingredients are meat. Of course, keep in mind the water content of the ingredients as well, which may artificially push them higher on the ingredient list. For instance, whole chicken contains a lot of water, which is removed while creating dry dog food. There may not be very much chicken in the food after considering the water content. The FDA has linked some heart problems to grain-free foods. However, anything is technically possible. They are very active dogs and work best in an active family. It is recommended that you plan on strenuous exercise at least an hour a day. This can be a long walk, job, or playtime. Many of these dogs love games like fetch, which can help wear them out without wearing you out. Training for some canine sports can also fulfill this need. Ample exercise is recommended. Otherwise, these dogs can exhibit destructive behaviors like digging and chewing. These dogs enjoy a fenced-in backyard, especially if you play games like fetch. However, they can adapt well to an apartment as long as their needs are met. A dog walker is almost required unless someone in the family is at home for much of the day and can take them on multiple walks. While these dogs do need lots of exercise, they cannot be put in a yard by themselves for an extended period. They need to be with their people. As people-oriented dogs, they can get a bit stir-crazy if they are isolated for long periods. They will learn commands quickly and obey them most of the time. They love obedience training and thrive in classes of all sorts. It is recommended that you enroll them in classes at a young age to challenge their mind and keep them mentally stimulated. Many train their dogs for canine sports like agility simply because they run out of ways to stimulate them otherwise mentally. These dogs make excellent therapy animals and can compete with success in just about any dog sport. The type of grooming they need primarily depends on what type of coat they have. However, most of them will have a high grooming need. Dogs with Poodle-like coats will need to be trimmed regularly by a groomer. Daily brushing is often required to prevent matting, even if your dog gets trimmer. A pin brush is often the best option for this, but it will depend mainly on the type of coat your dog has. Your dog may or may not shed. Some may shed a whole lot, while others will only shed a little bit. If your dog sheds, you will need to use a brush to remove much of the dead hair. They may shed more on some occasions than others, so you may need to increase your brushing sessions during these heavy-shedding periods. Too many baths can strip the oils from their skin and cause skin problems. For this reason, we recommend bathing them only when they are visibly dirty. For instance, dogs that roll in mud will need a bath. Dirty pond water and similar excursions will also call for a bath. Keep bathing to a minimum and use a sensitive shampoo that is formulated for dogs. This is especially true if trimming is required. Like all dogs, they will need their teeth brushed a few times a week and their nails cut when required. However, their nails can be done by a groomer if you are uncomfortable. Many purebred bloodlines have tiny gene pools, which is why breeds are pretty predictable. A Labrador Retriever will always act like a Labrador Retriever. However, this also means that rare genetic conditions become common. Mixed breeds can inherit genes from two different breeds, which effectively doubles their gene pool. This makes them a bit less predictable. However, it also has a direct effect on the genetic conditions they can inherit. They are much less likely to end up with a genetic condition that affects either dog breed. However, there are a few problems that may be prone to. For instance, patellar luxation is common in most small breeds. Since this dog is a bit smaller, they are more prone to it as well. This condition involves the kneecap being slightly misaligned. Usually, the kneecap sits in a unique groove. This can lead to pain walking, limping, and similar issues. It can be fixed with surgery, but this is often very expensive. There is a genetic component to this disease. However, it is present in both parent breeds so that a Eskapoo can inherit it from their parents in some cases. Ask any breeder about the parents of the dog and whether they have been health tested appropriately. Minor Conditions.
Wet food.As well as it being tasty, there are certain things to look out for when hunting for the best wet food for your puppy. For example, large and giant breeds are particularly prone to orthopaedic problems if they do not eat an appropriate diet while they are growing. That's why you can find food designed specifically for larger breeds. This is easy with wet food but is not as noticeable on treats. The more they eat, the more it will cost you. You should also be aware that your pup will need more food as they grow, and they grow incredibly quickly. You should also always consult your breeder. All dogs can be prone to allergies, but some breeds are more susceptible to developing allergies and the German Shepherd is one of these. Many things may trigger an allergic reaction in German Shepherds, including food products like animal proteins, wheat, eggs, soy or milk and environmental pathogens that are present in their everyday environments such as pollen, dust, perfumes or moulds. Some German Shepherds can also be allergic to flea saliva, leading to a condition known as flea-allergic dermatitis. When this condition occurs the dog will develop irritated skin after just one flea bite, leading to incessant itching, red spots on the skin and inflammation. German Shepherds are known for having thick fur, so brushing and checking their skin daily or weekly is vital to keep on top of any changes. If you think your German Shepherd does have an allergy, seek the help of your vet as soon as possible. I immediately fell in love with her photos and had to meet her in person. Monica is a joy to work with and so accommodating considering we picked our pup up while vacationing on the 4th of July. All of her animals are well cared for, and born into a great environment on her farm. Both parents were on site, and had a great temperament. Monica was very knowledgeable about the breed, and willing to answer any questions during our exchange. She exceeded our expectations of a reputable breeder, and I highly recommend her. Although my husband and I both work full time, our little pup is already picking up on things so fast, including potty training and basic commands we have used with her. Both our fur babies are getting along famously, and we are proud to have her in our little family. Thanks again for everything, Monica! After picking her out, we visited her a couple of times to start bonding. Monica was a wealth of information regarding GSPs. Molly is a healthy and much spoiled member of our family. Molly is not a hunting dog, although you see that aspect of the breed every time she spots a pelican or a squirrel. Beautiful stalk and point. My wife fell in love with Mama JuJu the catahoula bulldog and her new litter. Beautiful dogs. The family enjoyed the horse, goats, and ducks. They were easy to work with. Hawk is a good hunter. He has jumped several deer and tracked a blood trail. He has a great build for the breed. Couldn't be more pleased. I was searching for a GSP and came across Monica. After one phone call, I knew I was at the right place. We got our little girl, Ellie from her last month and we have been in love since the first photo. She is the most cuddly, smart, sweet, beautiful I've ever had. We could not be happier. Monica is the most helpful and wonderful lady. You can tell she really loves what she is doing and her dogs. Whenever someone asks for a reference on where to get a GSP I do not hesitate to recommend her. We could not be happier with our girl. The dog is one of the smartest dogs I have ever owned and a pleasure to train. I'm training her myself and she shows a real prey drive already. She will point almost anything and retrieves on land and in water already. Monica is so pleasant to deal with and was great to work with. I highly recommend her. Submitted by: Lynn Winstead on Jul 10, I stumbled across this web site by accident and it was the best thing that ever happened! Our beloved GSP Eve had just passed away, and while not really looking I saw a pic of Monica's pup's and fell in love. She is the happiest and smartest dog I've ever owned. And she loves her pool and our lake. Old Orchard Farm is a beautiful place and Monica and her husband are wonderful people. Monica put a lot of time into her animals and you can tell.I recommend old orchard farm everyday when people ask about my beautiful loona! He was born on Valentine's day this year!! As soon as the pups were old enough we were able to go visit and pick out which pup we wanted to join our family. Monica was very helpful with any questions we had and didn't rush us at all. Very friendly and personable! After we picked out our Kaiser, we were updated frequently with pictures, videos, and emails. Kaiser is almost 5 months now and we have never had any health problems with him. They kept us updated and informed on our puppy as we waited to bring him home. They sent us pictures and videos. We brought home a wonderful puppy names Huck. They provided us with plenty of first time pet owner tips. I recommend Old Orchard Farms. I have also ran into other gsp owners who got there pups from Monica and were all very pleased with her and their pet! Overall I give them a ! I searched for a long time and never once saw Old Orchard Farms come up, but I sure am glad I kept looking!! Being so far away we had to handle most of the business over the phone. Not only for their wonderful hospitality but also for their high quality dogs. I will be doing business with them in the future for sure!! Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Fill out the below form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Officially, there is only a single type of Boxer dog recognized by major kennel clubs. However, fanciers and breeders have set the distinctions between Boxer dogs bred in different countries. The differences between the types of Boxer dogs in each region are heavily dependent on preferences. Breeders from each location have been cultivating specific characteristics or traits that they want the breed to exhibit. International kennel organizations also contributed to their variation as they prioritize the characteristics of a certain region over the other. Among the three types of Boxers, this is the second variant that has been merited as a standard in by The Kennel Club KC , one of the oldest canine organizations in the world. This substantiates why the UK standard leans more to the characteristic of this Boxer type. One of the defining characteristics of UK Boxers is their small feet, high knuckles, and slender legs which give them a more elegant look. It is considered to be the smallest and slimmest among the three. Nonetheless, the masculine physique which is the core trait of Boxers is still evident. Its slender body also provides more room for agility and precision in moving. It is also expected for UK Boxers to be biddable, calm, fearless, and self-assured. Oddly enough, the standard for this type of Boxer was only established after the two other Boxer types were standardized. Among the three, the German Boxer remains to be the more robust and largest type in terms of muscle mass and bone structure. Their physique has a more defined masculine figure with longer and stronger legs. These traditional Boxer features are probably retained through time since most German Boxers are still bred for their natural talents in herding and hunting. Another key characteristic of German Boxers is that they have a shorter snout compared to American Boxers but wider than the UK Boxers. According to most Boxer breeders, German Boxers are calmer and easier to train compared to the other types of Boxers. The traits and characteristics of the American Boxer were officially acknowledged in by the American Kennel Club. The most defining trait of this Boxer type lies in its coat. An American Boxer has a smooth, tight, and shiny coat that has no wrinkles. With this unique trait, it would be easy to distinguish an American Boxer among other variants. Boxer fanciers claim that American Boxers have a more elegant and balanced look. The reason could be because most American Boxers are bred to be show dogs or champions of conformation events. When it comes to temperament and behavior, the American Boxers are said to be playful yet constrained, patient, and stoic towards family members — especially with children. Also, they are said to be the most energetic Boxer among all types. If you have been searching about Boxers, you might have also heard about black Boxers although there are none in reality. Let me explain to you in this section the different coat colors and markings that Boxer dogs have. Fawn Boxer Dog Fawn coat color can exhibit a range of hues, including shades of yellow, tan, red, and mahogany. It is one of the two standard coat colors recognized by kennel clubs and possibly the most iconic. Too much white on the coat is considered a fault. The common markings for fawn Boxers are white flash and a black mask. The black mask refers to a black muzzle that can also be seen on German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Brindle Boxer Dog Brindle is not a color but a pattern. This is characterized by the presence of streaks of irregular and darker color against the light color background of the coat. For Boxers, the background is usually a color ranging from fawn to deep red. The appearance of the brindle coat will vary depending on the thickness and thinness of the color strips. Some may look like almost solid fawns while some may have more defined patterns in their body. Depending on the shade of the brindle, a Boxer dog may be called a light brindle, golden brindle, fawn brindle, red brindle, or mahogany brindle. The concentration of brindle patterns in Boxers can also be classified into three: tiger brindle, reverse brindle, and seal brindle. The streaks of irregular darker hair patterns are spread across a light background. On the other hand, reverse brindle dogs have strips of irregular lighter color against a darker color background. They differ from a seal brindle Boxer who sports a heavy concentration of dark streaks on their coat. However, for the record, there is no such thing as black Boxer dogs in reality. Purebred Boxer dogs do not carry the black color gene so it is impossible for them to have a black base. Boxers can only either be fawn to mahogany , brindle, or white. The black Boxer dogs that are advertised are brindle in nature. Remember the seal brindle that I mentioned earlier? When the streaks of the darker color patterns are too tight that they seal or shut the light background off, the coat appears to be solid black. In other words, the black coloration is nothing but an illusion. Worst, due to the hoaxes about white Boxers, they were even culled back then. Contrary to popular belief, white Boxers are not albino. Albinism occurs when a dog lacks pigmentation on its body. However, that is not the case for white Boxers. Similar to seal, the white coat for Boxers is produced due to an unusual patterning in the body. In short, they just have large white patches. White Boxers are either fawn or brindle with a large area covered with white markings. Boxers with this coat color typically do not have other markings in their body including a black mask. Those with patches of other colors in their body patches on the eyes, black mask, ears, back are called Check Boxers and are considered to be particolored. Boxers that have more than a third of white color in their coat or are all white are disqualified on conformation shows. The good news is that the AKC now recognizes the white coat color but is still considered to be non-standard. White Boxers are allowed to have limited AKC registration but are prohibited from being used on breeding. Knowing the type of Boxer you have would be easy if you bought from a reputable breeder. However, if circumstances do not allow the aforementioned ways, you can also try observing the unique characteristics of each type of Boxer. As discussed earlier, English or UK Boxers have long, slender legs which give them an elegant look. One of their defining characteristics is their high knuckles and small feet. If your dog sports this appearance, it is probably a UK Boxer. If your dog is large compared to other Boxers you see, there is a high tendency that it is a German Boxer. This type of Boxer is the biggest among the three. It has a dense bone and a larger and more masculine frame compared to the UK and American Boxer. Spotting if your Boxer is an American type would be easy. The defining trait of an American Boxer is its slick, smooth, shiny, tight coat. In terms of temperament, it would be hard to distinguish the three types of Boxers as they exhibit similar behaviors: confidence, patient, calm, and watchful. However, the German Boxer is said to be the calmest Boxer among the three. The American Boxer on the other hand is the most energetic type. If your Boxer sports extraordinary demeanor and composure unlike other Boxers, there is a great possibility that it is a German Boxer. Subsequently, if it acts like a bomb of energy, it is probably an American Boxer. Although all of the types of Boxers can join dog shows, some are more favored by specific kennel clubs. Conformation shows usually set guidelines following the standards provided by these organizations. Thus, Boxers that perfectly adhere to the standards are more favored than the others. If you want to join Boxer shows, the first thing you need to do is to identify the type of Boxer you own as well as the kennel club that sponsors the event. The prices of the three different types of Boxers have no significant differences. Boxer dogs with champion blood are more expensive than ordinary purebred Boxers. When it comes to coat color, the most expensive Boxer puppy would be the one with a seal brindle. As discussed earlier, a Boxer with this coat creates an illusion of a solid black color. Due to their rarity, Boxer dogs with seal brindle color are highly valued and priced. Places to Find Different Types of Boxer Dogs for Sale and Adoption In buying a Boxer dog, you should only transact with reputable breeders and avoid buying from backyard breeders and puppy mills. A professional Boxer breeder only aims to enhance and further the characteristics of the breed. Here are the places where you can find reputable and professional Boxer breeders. This online marketplace is regulated by the AKC itself so you have the assurance that all of the Boxer puppies sold are bred ethically and professionally. Most of the advertised Boxers in this marketplace came from the bloodlines of American Boxers. They have a acre facility dedicated to breeding German and UK Boxer dogs. This breeder is interested in breeding German Boxers that is why all of the dogs in their facility have German pedigrees. Unfortunately, a great number of Boxer dogs also end up in rescue centers. If you are eyeing to adopt one, here are the places where you can apply: American Boxer Club Rescue Directory — The parent organization of Boxer clubs in America has a complete list of the numerous Boxer rescue organizations across the country. There are dedicated shelters for each state and region of the US. Adopt-a-Pet — This is an online pet database that is dedicated to rehoming Boxer dogs. There are hundreds of Boxers posted on their sites every day that are available for adoption. It is affiliated with over 12, pet shelters across the US and Canada. All types of Boxer dogs English, German, and American are pretty common. In fact, kennel clubs do not consider these types as exactly legit. The terms American, UK, and German Boxer dogs are mostly used by breeders residing in a certain location. The boat only tips in terms of coat color. Contrary to popular belief that white is the rarest color for Boxers, seal brindle Boxers are the real gems. The tight patterns of a dark streak of hairs give an illusion of solid black coat color. Due to their rarity, they are also considered to be more expensive compared to other colors. What Is a European Boxer Dog? A European Boxer dog is another term used to refer to German Boxers. They are more masculine and have larger body frames. To be fair, all Boxer dogs are equally good. However, there are unique traits evident to each type of Boxer dog. The physique of a German Boxer dog is more robust than the other types, giving it an impression of a more reliable guardian. On the other hand, the unique features of American Boxer shiny tight coat and UK Boxer high knuckles and slender feet give them a more elegant look. If you are after a sport or a working dog, German Boxers would be preferable. On the other hand, if you would like to join conformation events, the American or UK Boxer will be your go-to. In addition, you should also consider your region as judges favor a certain type of Boxer depending on their origin. For the behavior and temperament, all three are lively yet calm, easily trained, and self-composed. However, breeders and owners testify that American Boxers are more energetic compared to the other types of Boxers. Your preference and lifestyle will be your criteria in choosing which Boxer matches you. Aside from their slight differences in size and appearance, they are all Boxer dogs that exhibit elegance and vigor. Their temperament and behavior will heavily depend on the environment they are raised in and the training they received. In terms of Boxer types according to coat colors, you should carefully weigh your options and refer to what the standard says. If you aspire to enter show events, you should not choose a Boxer puppy that is white or has white patches that cover more than a third of its body as such traits are considered faults. You should take note that a Boxer is not a dog for beginners. It is a breed that requires proper training and attention. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. There are just two purebred Boxer colors: fawn, and brindle—with or without white markings. Different levels of these pigments determine the different colors. For example, black can produce a grey or brown coat, and red can produce a yellow or cream coat. Dogs have 8 genes that determine coat color. Each one is responsible for different types of color. Examples: an agouti gene creates coat patterns. What about the fawn color? How do experts define fawn coat color in dogs? Fawn Coat Color Boxers have variations of the red coat color pigment, not the black. The red-based fawn coloring can range all the way from light tan to dark mahogany. Brindle is dominant over fawn, but the combination of genes in an individual puppy determines its coloring. As with fawn vs. Certain colors can be linked to health conditions. The most common relationship most people know about is white color and deafness. White color and hereditary deafness are linked in many animals. This is because lack of pigment is genetically connected to inner ear degeneration. Some dog breeds, such as the Dalmatian, are more prone to hereditary deafness than others. What about a flashy fawn Boxer dog with a large amount of white coloring? Deafness Any dog, regardless of breed or color, can be born deaf or become deaf later in life. Breeds with a high rate of congenital deafness often have a significant amount of white coat coloring, but color is not the only cause of deafness. Boxers in general do not have a high incidence of deafness. If a Boxer has a large amount of white, especially on the head, then the risk for deafness does increase somewhat. What about temperament? Boxers are a much-loved breed with a long and interesting history. The Boxer dog we know today was first developed in the s in Germany. The ancestry of the Boxer can be traced to a very old breed called the Bullenbeisser bull biter. The Bullenbeisser was crossed with smaller dogs to create the modern Boxer. Boxers belong to the working dog group and have been used as guard dogs, military dogs, and even guide dogs for the blind. How large will your fawn Boxer dog get? Boxer Description The Boxer is a sleek and athletic medium sized dog. An adult male boxer weighs between 65 and 80 pounds. The breed standard calls for females to weigh about 15 pounds less than males. The Boxer has a distinctive head with an alert and intelligent face. Both the fawn and brindle Boxer dogs have short, smooth coats that require minimal grooming. Boxer Personality and Training As a working dog breed, the fawn Boxer dog has an alert and intelligent nature with a strong work ethic and a love of exercise and activity. Experts recommend that you enroll your Boxer in formal puppy training classes and socialize your dog around other dogs, animals, and people. As a working breed, Boxers enjoy stimulating and interactive organized activities like agility and obedience trials, sheep herding, and lure coursing. Boxers also make excellent therapy dogs. Boxer Health We talked about a slight risk for hereditary deafness in white Boxer dogs. What about the fawn Boxer dog? While there are no known health issues connected to the fawn coat color, there are a few inherited health conditions common to fawn and brindle boxers. Like many dog breeds, Boxers can be prone to the joint conditions hip and elbow dysplasia. Dysplasia is a joint deformity that can cause chronic pain in your Boxer. Boxers can also be prone to two genetic heart conditions: aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is an electrical conduction disorder that causes the heart to beat erratically and can also be life threatening. Other issues Boxers can also be at risk for certain kinds of cancers, thyroid problems, and a neurological condition called degenerative myelopathy. While Boxers can be prone to some potentially serious inherited health conditions. The good news is that there are health tests including genetic health tests for many of them. But before you fall in love with a particular puppy, make sure to choose a responsible breeder who follows the health testing guidelines outlined by the official breed club. Boxer health tests can take the form of blood and DNA tests, X-rays, and heart monitoring and echocardiograms. Health testing information should also be certified by an official canine health clearinghouse like the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. A healthy puppy should have clear eyes, clean ears and nose, a shiny coat, and well-formed stools. Boxers are one of the most popular dog breeds, and for good reason! They are loyal, energetic, friendly, intelligent, and brave. The Boxer is a handsome dog breed and fans can have definite preferences for what their Boxer should look like. The fawn Boxer dog can be solid colored or fawn and white. The fawn coloring can vary from light to dark and the amount of white can vary as well. Remember to take your new best friend to puppy kindergarten to ensure that your dog is well trained and socialized. Already have a fawn Boxer dog? Tell us about your Boxer in the comments! The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Animals —dogs especially — have played such a major role in my life and the lives of my children, as evidenced by the fact that my two children Kiersten Gromley and Bryce Gromley are co-owners of Plumcreek Acres LLC and other animal-related activities. My daughter, Kiersten, has been showing dogs, hogs, and goats for 14 years and has recently branched off to help the judges at the shows. Kiersten also helps handle the dogs and gets them prepped and ready for the ring. I credit her work drive on being raised here on the farm with animals. My son, Bryce, age 20 is also active in the show world, and with his love of animals, we have ended up having a small zoo. Bryce is the owner of all the Irish Setters. Bryce has also branched out with fresh natural pork and grass-fed beef. If you are interested in all-natural pork or grass feed beef please send us an email. I am proud of all I have achieved in life, but I am most proud of the children I have had the honor to call my kids. Our kennel is fully licensed and my personable puppies are raised on 22 acres of open field, giving them the unique opportunity to run freely and swim in nearby creeks. My puppies are renowned for their superior pedigree, fun-loving personalities, and loyal companionship. A large part of what makes the quality of these pups so high is the use of Dog Bloom Supplements , and I highly suggest that all puppies purchased from Plumcreek Acres stay on them for the remainder of their lives. Breeds The link has been copied! The Husky Pug Mix, also known as the "Hug," is a fascinating mixed breed that combines the best traits of two popular dog breeds: the Siberian Husky and the Pug. This hybrid dog has been growing in popularity in recent years, and it's easy to see why. In this article, we'll delve into everything you need to know about the Husky Pug Mix, from their appearance and personality to their health and grooming needs. This unlikely pairing results in a unique and charming dog with a captivating blend of physical and personality traits. As the popularity of mixed breeds continues to rise, the Husky Pug Mix has become a sought-after choice for those seeking a unique and loyal companion. But what makes this hybrid dog so special? Typically, a Husky Pug Mix will have a compact and sturdy build, with a weight range of 30 to 60 pounds and a height of 16 to 22 inches at the shoulder. Their coat can be short to medium in length, often featuring the distinct markings of a Siberian Husky. Their facial features can vary, with some having the wrinkled face and pushed-in nose of a Pug, while others inherit the sharp and wolf-like features of a Husky. One of the most captivating aspects of the Husky Pug Mix is its appearance. These dogs are a delightful blend of both parent breeds, with physical traits that can vary greatly between individual dogs. These dogs are highly social and love to be around people, making them excellent family pets. Their Siberian Husky heritage contributes a playful, energetic, and intelligent nature, while their Pug ancestry brings a loving, loyal, and easy-going temperament. Despite their high energy levels, Husky Pug Mixes can also be quite laid-back and are known to enjoy a good cuddle. However, these dogs can also inherit a stubborn streak from their Pug parent, so patience and consistency are essential during training sessions. Husky Pug Mixes require a moderate amount of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. A daily walk, coupled with some playtime in the yard or at the park, will help keep your Husky Pug Mix mentally and physically stimulated. However, like all mixed breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds. Some potential health concerns to watch for in a Husky Pug Mix include hip dysplasia , eye issues, and breathing difficulties due to their shortened snout. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet can help mitigate these risks and ensure your Husky Pug Mix lives a long and happy life. If your dog has a short coat like a Pug, grooming will be relatively easy with regular brushing to remove loose hair and keep their coat looking shiny. If they have a longer coat like a Siberian Husky, more frequent brushing will be necessary to prevent matting and keep shedding under control. Additionally, regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are important to maintain your Husky Pug Mix's overall health and well-being. Now that you know all about the Husky Pug Mix, you might be wondering if this unique and lovable breed is the right fit for you and your family. When considering a Husky Pug Mix, it's essential to take into account their exercise, grooming, and training needs, as well as their friendly and outgoing temperament. If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate, and energetic companion who will bring joy and laughter to your home, the Husky Pug Mix might just be the perfect match! Training and Socialization The intelligent nature of the Husky Pug mix makes them highly trainable, but it's essential to start early and be consistent. Use positive reinforcement techniques, such as praise, treats, and play, to encourage desired behaviors. This breed may inherit the Pug's stubbornness, so patience and persistence are key. Socialization is crucial for a well-rounded and confident Hug. Expose your dog to a variety of people, animals, and environments from an early age to help them become comfortable in different situations. Enrolling in puppy socialization classes or obedience training can be a great way to kick-start the process. Exercise and Activity As mentioned earlier, the Husky Pug mix has moderate to high energy levels, and it is essential to provide them with daily physical activity and mental stimulation. Aim for at least 45 to 60 minutes of exercise per day, which can include walks, jogs, hikes, or play sessions in a fenced yard or dog park. Keep in mind that the Pug's brachycephalic short-nosed features can make the Hug more susceptible to overheating and breathing difficulties, especially during hot weather or strenuous exercise. Monitor your dog closely and provide them with plenty of water and shade to avoid heat exhaustion. Mental stimulation is just as important for your Husky Pug mix. Engage their minds with puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions. Teaching them new tricks or commands can be a fun and rewarding way to bond with your Hug while keeping them mentally sharp. Pug crossed with Husky Training Properly training your pup is just as crucial as its regular exercise needs. You may need some patience on your part while training this dog breed since they may inherit the willfulness of their Siberian Husky parent. This is for your dog to learn the proper etiquette at a young age and avoid developing aggressive behaviors when he grows up. Remember to keep the pace of the training slow as your pup is still young and his body might still be fragile. Later on, when your pup is ready physically, you can increase the pace. Use Positive ReinforcementEven if this mixed breed has a tendency to become stubborn due to its Siberian Husky lineage, avoid taking extreme measures. The use of positive reinforcement goes a long way in getting your Pug Husky mix to behave. Using negative punishment-based training will not do any help, but instead, your pup might just end up not respecting you. Make it a regular routine to reward him whenever he does something right. Implement simple rules that they can follow and in return and give them praises and treats for obeying the rules. Remember not to overfeed them with food treats as this hybrid has a high tendency to be obese, especially if it inherits most of his Pug parent breed characteristics. This means that when they breed, their puppies can look very different from one another! Husky Pugs can look very different from each other! Average size Huskies are described as being a medium-sized dog breed and Pugs as a small-sized dog breed. As a result, the Husky Pug mix lies somewhere in between, but it is usually on the smaller side. Due to the size difference between an average Husky and Pug, it is hard to predict exactly how big a Pusky will grow. The average height of a Husky Pug mix can loosely be described as between 10 and 24 inches 25cmcm and the average weight as between 18 and 60 lbs 8kgkg. If both the parents are on the larger size, then you can usually expect larger puppies and vice versa. As the size range is so large, we recommend that all puppies are seen by a vet to determine what weight is healthy. They will be able to assess the body fat that is present and recommend a more specific healthy weight range. This is particularly important as the Pug breed is prone to obesity. Coat appearance Huskies and Pugs have quite different coat appearances. Whilst Huskies are recognised for their wolf-like coats and markings that perfectly suit a snowy landscape, Pugs usually have a solid colour coat appearance either fawn or black with very dark markings around the snout. In fact, Husky Pug mixes will often have the marking of either the Pug parent or the Husky parent, but not both. This can lead to a large variation in the appearance of puppies within the same litter. In general, Husky Pugs will have coats that exhibit a broad range of colours from grey, white, and black to fawn and chocolatey brown. Dark markings around the face and snout will often be present but will vary between individual puppies. One thing that Huskies and Pugs do have in common is that they are both double-coated breeds. As a result, Husky Pugs will have short-to-medium length double coats that have a smooth, straight texture. Their ears can either be erect or floppy and it often depends on their coat appearance. For example, Pugskies with coats that resemble their Husky parent will usually have the floppy ears of a pug and vice versa. Husky Pugs can have a wide range of eye colours, from dark brown to striking blue. The famous heterochromia that is often associated with Huskies is also possible in Husky Pugs, meaning they may have eyes of two different colours. Husky Pugs will have a stocky build. Their tails can either be curled or straight but straight is more commonly seen. Husky Pug Mix Grooming Guide Husky Pugs are a double-coated breed and require a good grooming routine to keep them looking healthy. Grooming is also important as it allows you to check their body frequently for any changes that are unnoticeable by sight alone. Their grooming routine will vary depending on the length of coat they inherit from their parents: If they have a shorter coat resembling that of a Pug, then you might be able to get away with weekly brushing. Brushing with a suitable tool will remove loose hairs and dislodge any dirt that has gotten stuck. Not only that, but it will prevent matting from forming which will be painful to remove down the line. If they have a longer coat like their Husky parent, then grooming must be done several times per week. Loose hairs can get tangled much easier in longer fur so regular grooming is needed. We recommend for Husky Pug mix owners to invest in the following tools to make grooming easier: An undercoat rake: Essential for double-coated breeds, this tool removes loose fur from the undercoat quickly and painlessly. A dematter tool: If your Husky Pug mix has a longer coat, they will be prone to getting matted fur. A dematter tool has lightly serrated edges that remove matted fur without causing pain to your Husky Pug and without damaging the coat unnecessarily. A pin brush: Pin brushes should be used for regular grooming to remove loose hairs and stimulate new fur growth by massaging the skin. If your Husky Pug has facial folds, they must be cleaned regularly to remove dirt that builds up within them. Husky Pugs should be bathed roughly once every weeks, or as needed if they become excessively dirty. Their teeth should be kept clean with daily brushing or dental chews. Their nails will need clipping as required, although an appropriate exercise routine will help to keep them filed. Husky Pug Mix Temperament Despite clear physical differences, the Husky and the Pug share many of the same personality traits. This means it is relatively easy to predict the temperament of a Husky Pug. Keep in mind that all dogs are different and that no two Husky Pugs will be exactly the same. Husky Pugs are a friendly crossbreed and are very affectionate with their owners. They love to be the centre of attention and will often follow their owners around, hoping to be involved in family activities. Husky Pugs are usually quite social and will befriend anyone they come across. They are a great breed for living with children, but interactions with young children and babies should always be supervised as with all dog breeds. This makes the crossbreed an excellent choice for family homes that have many visitors. Not only that, but with the correct socialisation, Husky Pugs can happily interact and live with other dogs. Socialisation should be started at a young age, although the crossbreed is quite adaptable and will often learn to accommodate other dogs at an older age too. Whether a Husky Pug can live with a cat really depends on the individual dog. Huskies are known for having a high prey drive which often leads to them trying to hunt cats that they live with. On the other hand, Pugs are much more friendly towards their feline companions and can usually live with them in harmony. With the correct socialisation and precautions put in place, it is possible for Husky Pugs to live with cats. Overall, the Husky Pug is a dog that will instantly be loved by anyone who meets it thanks to its friendly personality and tendency to seek attention. The average life expectancy of a Husky Pug mix is years. The Husky Pug is prone to developing, or being born with, certain health conditions due to its parent breeds. Being aware of these conditions will make it easier to identify them should they occur in the future. The most commonly seen health conditions in Husky Pugs are listed below: Pug Dog Encephalitis PDE — Most commonly found affecting Pugs and their crossbreeds, this rare auto-immune disease causes inflammation of the brain tissue. It is a progressive disease, meaning it will become worse with time, and is usually fatal. Symptoms include seizures, blindness, and depression. It is thought that PDE occurs in Pugs who are closely related , and genetic testing can be completed to reduce the chances of a Pugsky inheriting the relevant genes. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — A skeletal condition that causes the hip and elbow joints to deteriorate over time due to abnormalities. Pugs rank as the second-highest breed affected by hip dysplasia specifically. Treatment is possible with surgical intervention, although prevention through careful breeding programs and good weight management is preferred. Cataracts is usually age-related but in rarer cases, Husky Pugs may develop juvenile cataracts. Pugs that have been bred to have flat faces are highly affected by this condition which causes chronic discomfort and the tendency to struggle to breathe during exercise. The Pug parent of a Husky Pug should be a responsibly bred Pug, that has been bred for health rather than appearance. Dermatitis — Husky Pugs with facial folds or tightly curled tails are likely to get dermatitis which is the irritation of the surrounding skin. If untreated, dermatitis can cause hair loss and may progress into an infection. The recommended health tests for the Husky Pug mix are: Ophthalmologist evaluation eyes Blood tests to check for common vitamin deficiencies such as zinc Allergy tests Physical examinations We recommend that your Husky Pug mix is neutered at the appropriate age and that they receive vaccines against preventable diseases. It is important that you take the steps to prevent them from getting fleas or worms using over-the-counter medication. This is because there is a stark difference in the energy levels of both parent breeds. On one hand, the Husky is a highly energetic breed that can play for hours on end. On the other hand, Pugs are often couch potatoes that will happily snooze the day away. As a result, Husky Pugs have a moderate exercise requirement, but individuals may have more or less energy depending on their temperament. Husky Pugs will enjoy one long walk per day or around 90 minutes of physical activity which includes playtime. It is recommended for Husky Pugs to live in a home that has an easily accessible yard for them to run in, although it is possible for them to live in apartments so long as their exercise needs are fulfilled. Husky Pugs are susceptible to heatstroke thanks to their shorter snouts and dense coats. During the summer months, avoid walks and playtime during the hottest part of the day and make sure fresh water is always available. This will help them to maintain a healthy weight and prevent issues in later life. Husky Pugs will benefit from consistent obedience training, starting at a young age. Both the Siberian Husky and the Pug are regarded as being stubborn breeds, meaning training will be challenging if it is left too late. Thankfully, both parent breeds are quick learners despite the myths that pugs are unintelligent. Final Thoughts Overall, the Husky Pug mix is a loving and affectionate crossbreed that easily fits in with most family households. They are not overly energetic but will still enjoy a good play, and will live a long and healthy life with the proper care. Do you own a Husky Pug? If your Hug takes after the Siberian Husky in stature, they will likely be closer to 60 pounds during adulthood. Dogs that take after their Pug parent may be half as small and weigh in at the pound mark. Chances are that they will give you a hug or try to explain the nature of humans embracing each other. But most Hugs will work hard on the farm or at the workplace, whether pulling or herding something or keeping a human they love company. A puppy might even turn into an adult that exhibits a delightful mixture of both Pug and Siberian Husky traits. Your Hug may thrive in a highly active environment, or they might be happier relaxing at home much of the time. It all depends on their size, activity level, and personality. If your Hug takes after the Siberian Husky, they will expect to spend a great deal of time outdoors exercising. No matter the stature, most owners note that their Hugs are excellent escape artists. They try to make their way out of fences, doors, and kennels. Are These Dogs Good for Families? But they can also thrive in a single-person household as long as that person is adventurous and active. Hugs love playing with children and tend to be gentle with small children even after they are fully grown. These dogs are highly inquisitive, so owners should make puzzle toys and chewable items out for their Hug puppies. Hugs should be taught the other animals are to be accepted as soon as they are brought home for the first time. Consider making play dates with pet parents of dogs and cats that have already been socialized. Things to Know When Owning a Hug Puppy Owning a Hug puppy means experiencing pure love and joy, whether enjoying a weekend of camping or spending a day on the couch watching movies. You should know about everything from feeding and training to grooming requirements and potential health problems before deciding whether to adopt a new Hug puppy. Look for a food that features whole meat as the main ingredient. You should also look for something that is labeled to meet the nutritional needs of puppies specifically. You can expect to feed your Hug pup up to a cup and a half of puppy food every day until they reach adulthood at about 12 months of age. Hugs that take more after their Siberian Husky parent might need to be walked once or even twice a day, in addition to regular play sessions in the yard or visits to the dog park. Hugs that tend to take after their Pug parent may only need three to five walks each week to feel content and satisfied with their lives. The breeder you adopt your Hug puppy from may be able to provide you with some insight into which parent they will most likely to take after. So, if exercise needs are important to you when adopting a puppy, take the time to talk to the breeder about this issue. Hugs need something to do, like their working dog Siberian Husky parent. Hugs do well when it comes to agility training, so if you find that your pooch is highly active, consider enrolling them in agility courses. You can even set a homemade agility course up in your yard. Just use chairs and a broom to create a jump and use cones or plastic bottles to create poles for your pooch to weave through. You may need to brush your Hug a few times a week if it takes after its Siberian Husky parent. If it takes after its Pug parent, you can get away with weekly or even bi-weekly combing. So, you should know what to look for now to help keep your pup happy and healthy throughout their adulthood. Minor Conditions. Common colors include fawn, black, silver, and white. Coat Type Medium length, straight and double-coated. Temperament Intelligent, energetic, sociable. Can be stubborn at times. Exercise Needs Moderate to high. They need at least minutes of exercise daily. Health Issues May inherit issues from either breed, such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, and breathing difficulties. Training Difficulty Moderate. Not suitable for hot climates. And with the two dogs being so different from one another, the results can change dramatically! Many people argue that first-generation breeds tend to have more health issues and can have bad temperaments. Whether or not you see this as a bad or good thing is up to you. All reasons will be covered in detail throughout the entire article. Check out the Husky Chihuahua Mix! The most unique mix ever? Great family dogs and good with kids Very friendly and are rarely ever aggressive Can make great watchdogs for your family Are generally small dogs, not needing too much space or exercise IF containing more pug genes This was just a quick snapshot of just a few of their positive traits which might make you want a Husky Pug mix. The Husky and the Pug are two breeds that could not look more different even if they tried! The best way to describe the Hug dog is almost like a mini-husky that has Pug features and shape! Many people ask how big does a husky pug get, and are interested in the full-grown size of the Hug dog. This depends on which parent genes the crossbreed takes on more. Weight This is similar to height, as the two breeds are so drastically different. The weight ultimately depends on the size and height of the Husky Pug mix. The average weight of a Husky Pug mix can range from as little as 15lbs all the way to 60lbs. Coat, Color, and Markings Huskies have medium to long thick double-layered coats and contrary to belief the Pug also has a double-layered coat! Although their coat is short with a smooth glossy feel. Their color and markings tend to stay separate. Huskies are typically white, gray, black or red with very bold markings, especially on their face, around their eyes, and head. Pugs are typically fawn color with a dark snout. Husky Pug mixes will usually either be one or the other. Their colors and markings are usually either that of the pug parent or the husky parent. Nose and Snout The snouts of each parent breed could not be more different. Huskies have a long prominent snout, and the Pug snout is pretty much non-existent. Ears Pugs tend to have small floppy ears whereas Huskies have large triangle standing ears. With Hugs, you can see a range of ear shapes. An interesting observation, commonly seen with Husky Pug mixes is that when the coat color and markings of the Husky parent come through more, the ears tend to be floppy like the Pug. On the contrary, when the coat color and markings of the Pug come through, the ears tend to be standing upright triangles shape like Huskies. Pretty cool! Eyes One of the most visually striking parts of the Siberian Husky are their eyes. Husky Pug mixes have been seen to have the piercing blue eyes that the Husky can have. In even rarer cases, you will get a Hug puppy that has one brown and one blue eye. What also has a big effect on temperament is what the parents were like. If one of the parents had any behavioral issues this could pass down to the offspring and cause them to show similar behavior. We know that both the Siberian Husky and the Pug are both very friendly, loving and affectionate. Both breeds love attention. Huskies are considered by many to be the No. The Hug will definitely want all the time they can possibly get from you and the family. The Husky is very social and can easily make friends with other dogs or strangers without being aggressive or suspicious. The Pug, on the other hand, needs strong socialization training in order to be like this. Pugs are not generally aggressive BUT they can be to unknown dogs or strangers. So, how much does a Husky Pug mix Cost? Here are some of the basic things to look for when getting a new puppy: Use a trusted breeder that has references you can check on. If the breeder has been recommended by a veterinarian, this is the best. A good breeder will not pressure you into making any purchases. If the breeder seems too pushy for your money. This is not a good sign. Make sure the breeder has had the necessary healthy check-ups and test for the new puppy Proper certificates and health documentation should be present for the parents of the husky pug mix. If the parents are there, you should go and see them. Get a feel for their temperament and their general health and well-being. Unfortunately, there are many illegitimate breeders using online websites to make a quick profit. Do the same checks as you would otherwise when looking in person. Grooming is an important part of keeping all dogs healthy and you will have to groom your Husky Pug mix frequently. If your Hug inherits the shorter, smoother coat from the Pug parent, then you should brush them once or twice per week, which will remove any dead hairs that need to come out, as well as removing any dirt dust or hair tangles. The longer the hair, the more dead hair there will be in the undercoat. Exercising a Husky mix with Pug Huskies and Pugs are very different when it comes to their exercise requirements. The only way you will really know by monitoring your Hug as they grow up. Siberian Huskies need around 2 hours of intense exercise per day. They have extremely high energy levels and they need to channel this through physical and mental exercise. When Huskies do not receive the exercise they need and desire, they tend to become very destructive and badly behaved. As the parents are so different, the only way you will know how much exercise your Hug needs, is to monitor and gauge them as they grow. Pug mix with Husky Diet Requirements Siberian Huskies tend not to have big appetites and despite their size, are not greedy. When a Husky is feeling remotely full, they will leave their bowl even with food still in it. Oftentimes, people consider Huskies to be very fussy eaters. Pugs, in general, are pretty normal eaters, they typically do not have issues eating, they can sometimes be fussy, or have sensitive stomachs, but usually, they have normal eating habits. While they may not be as smart, many owners say that their Pugs are quick learners and can be very obedient once trained. However, both breeds, especially the Siberian Husky have a stubborn streak in them, which means training can be very challenging. If your Husky Pug mix has more Husky genes, training will not be easy and you will be tested from day one! The truth is your puppy is ready to be trained instantly and should be to instill the correct behavior. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. Establish the hierarchy Both the Husky and Pug look to appease their owners, but you first must establish yourself as the leader, this will also help with all subsequent training. Remember that you are in charge and your puppy has to do things when you want them to. All training should be Positive Reinforcement Based The absolute best way to train all puppies is through positive reinforcement. Do not punish your puppy when they get it wrong, praise them when they get it right. Praise can be a small treat , or by making a big fuss out of them for a few seconds. Reward them the second they get any training correct. Consistent training every day will be needed Training should be done every day as much as possible. Once your puppy knows these commands, it makes more difficult training a lot easier and feasible. Recall and sociability training should start as soon as possible after basic commands. Recall and sociability training will be super important for a well-behaved crossbreed. Shift your focus to recall training and sociability after your Hug gets the basic commands. This will be just as useful for a Husky Pug puppy as well. It walks you through training, step by step. Unfortunately, despite the generous lifespan, this crossbreed is prone to many health issues that can be difficult to fix. The Husky is a generally healthy breed with typical health issues affecting most dog breeds. There are a few common problems that affect Huskies more and I will list them below. Pugs, on the other hand, are known to have many health issues. Unfortunately, this breed is likely to suffer from many different problems throughout their life. Pug Dog Encephalitis PDE is common amongst Pugs and is considered an aggressive and fatal inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system.
Breeds The link has been copied! Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As an admirer of one of these lovely furry companions, you may question how much it costs to buy and own a Labrador Retriever. We'll explore the upfront price of purchasing a puppy and the routine costs associated with pet ownership. We'll also cover various factors that can impact the cost of a Lab and provide tips on how to reduce the cost of owning one. The cost of a Lab can vary depending on several factors such as its age, color, purpose show or field , whether it's a purebred, and more. Routine Care Expenses Owning a Labrador Retriever requires some routine care expenses, which should be taken into account when considering the overall cost of having a pet. One of the essential expenses is veterinary care, which includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, and emergency medical care. Labs are prone to specific health issues, such as hip dysplasia , eye problems, and skin allergies, which may require additional medical attention and expenses. Another routine care expense for Labs is feeding. As they are a somewhat larger breed, they require a substantial amount of food to maintain their weight and energy levels. Additionally, treats, chews, and supplements can also be added to their diet, increasing the overall cost of nutrition. Proper grooming and hygiene are essential to keep a Lab healthy and comfortable. Remember that training and behavioral classes may be necessary to ensure your Lab is well-behaved and socialized, which can also be costly. These expenses should be considered when determining if a Lab is the right breed for you and your budget. How much a Labrador Retriever puppy costs depends on multiple factors, such as the breeder's reputation, the location of the pup, the bloodline, and more. Additionally, the cost may increase if the puppy comes with additional services such as health certificates, microchipping , or first vaccinations. Your pup will also need feeding, grooming, and bathing factored into their expenses, as well as beds, toys, chews, leashes, collars, harnesses, and much more. Consider the following: Buying From a Breeder vs. While adopting a Lab may be less expensive, it is essential to note that some shelters may have restrictions and requirements that need to be met before adoption. Keep in mind that the price of a Labrador based on color may vary by region and how popular that specific color is in that location. However, buyers should be cautious and avoid buying from dishonest breeders who may be selling mixed-breed dogs as purebreds. Breeders Reputation Reputable breeders who prioritize health, temperament, and breed standards usually charge more for their puppies. It's crucial to research the breeder thoroughly and ensure that they follow ethical breeding practices before making a purchase. This includes checking their breeding practices, requesting health certificates and pedigrees, and visiting their facilities in person if possible. Buyers should also be cautious of breeders who offer extremely low prices, as that might be a sign of unethical practices. Estimated Size The estimated size of an adult Labrador retriever is around about .Average Price To Buy A Lab Puppy From A Breeder The average price to buy a Lab puppy from a breeder is different from one person to the next, according to the reputation the breeder has in the community, the dog's bloodline, and their location. Again, the color of the Lab plays a significant factor as well. In addition to the cost of the puppy, there are also other expenses associated with owning a Lab. This includes routine care costs such as food, toys, grooming supplies, and veterinary visits for vaccinations and check-ups. Owners should also budget for unexpected expenses such as emergency veterinary care or unexpected illnesses. Remember that a reputable breeder may charge more for their puppies, but they are more likely to provide you with a healthy, well-socialized puppy from a good bloodline. Average Cost To Adopt A Lab Puppy Adopting a Lab puppy is generally less expensive than buying one from a breeder, but the costs can still vary widely. However, it's crucial to research adoption agencies thoroughly to ensure that they are reputable and the dogs are healthy and well-cared for before making a decision. You don't want to bring a sickly pup into your home, just to end up spending more on medical bills than you had anticipated. However, the costs don't stop there. Once you have your furry friend, ongoing expenses include food, vet bills, grooming, and more. In addition, Labs are known for their love of exploration and adventure, which means they have a penchant for getting lost. You don't want to get a new puppy with the understanding that the breed may be high maintenance, and then you lose track of your dog. The collar uses GPS and cellular technology to track your dog's location in real-time, so you can quickly locate your pet if they ever wander off. The collar also includes additional features such as activity monitoring and geofencing to alert you if your dog leaves a designated area. While the initial cost of the collar may seem high, it can save you money in the long run by preventing the loss or theft of your beloved Lab. Labrador Retriever Breed Guide Labrador Retrievers are outgoing and generally have a friendly disposition toward others. They are loyal, affectionate and make excellent family pets. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which makes them great for first-time dog owners. Due to their friendly nature, they also make excellent therapy dogs and are often used in service roles. Labrador Retrievers generally come in three colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. The coat is short, dense, and water-resistant, which makes them excellent swimmers. Labs can be medium to large dogs that weigh about 55 to 80 pounds on average, with the males usually outweighing the females by ten pounds. Typically, they're around two feet tall inches , and the males will have about a one-inch height advantage over the females. The average lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is around 12 years, although some can live up to 14 years. They are all around healthy, but like all dogs, there are specific ailments that you're more likely to encounter with a Lab, like obesity, ear infections, and hip dysplasia. As for lifetime care costs, they can vary depending on factors such as food, vet bills, and grooming expenses. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Labrador Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog from a shelter is usually less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder. Typically, dog shelters will include initial vaccinations, any spaying or neutering services needed, along with essential veterinary care up front. That helps cut down on some of the initial costs that owners usually spend when they first bring a puppy home. However, it's not uncommon that breeders will also at least include the first vaccinations for the pup upon its release to your family. Another option to reduce the cost of owning a Lab is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may already be trained and require less attention and socialization than a puppy, which can save on training costs and time. Moreover, older dogs may have lower veterinary bills since they may not require as many check-ups or preventative care as a puppy. Finally, another way to save money on the lifetime costs of owning a Labrador Retriever is to invest in preventative care. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary check-ups to catch potential health issues early on. While preventive care may require an upfront investment, it can ultimately save money by avoiding expensive medical bills down the line. Final Thoughts: The Cost of Owning a Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds to own, but they can be somewhat high maintenance after you bring them into your home. However, there are ways to reduce costs, such as adopting from a shelter or rescue organization, buying an older dog instead of a puppy, and being mindful of routine care costs. Regardless of the price, it's important to protect your Labrador Retriever with a GPS-tracking dog collar like the one offered by Fi, which can provide peace of mind and ensure the safety of your Lab. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Once your dog is an adult, it will not require as many vet visits and will only need booster shots every few years, so the average monthly costs will be much lower. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. We recommend purchasing a high-quality brand with real meat like chicken, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. The protein in meat will help build muscle and provide the energy your dog needs to stay healthy. High protein diets will also help your dog stay full longer, and it will be less likely to come looking for food. Foods with corn as the top ingredient are mostly empty calories that will leave your pet feeling hungry and looking for more food, potentially causing it to become obese. During the shedding seasons of spring and fall, you will likely need to increase the brushing to several times a week to help keep the fur off your furniture and floor. Professional grooming can also help with teeth brushing and nail clipping. This medication can also help prevent heartworm. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. If we have helped you create a budget that allows you to get one of these amazing pets, please share this guide on how much it costs to own a Labrador Retriever on social media. Featured Image Credit: scott, Pixabay Contents. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Less - The Labrador Retriever is a medium to large-sized , short-coupled, powerfully-built dog with a short, dense, water-resistant coat; small, drop ears; and a short, thick otter-like tail carried level with the back or with a slight upward curve. The length of body is equal to or only slightly longer than the height at the withers, and the distance from the elbows to the ground is equal to one-half the height at the withers. Balance, outline, intelligence, temperament and movement are of overriding importance. The Labrador Retriever is a breed of moderation, thoroughly sound, and willing and able to do its work. The Labrador Retriever is a dog without exaggeration, so light, weedy dogs; long, low-stationed dogs; and cloddy, lumbering dogs are to be equally penalized. The Labrador Retriever is an enthusiastic hunter with a good nose and a soft mouth. They excel in all performance activities. Another essential characteristic of the Labrador Retriever is the short, dense, double coat that protects the dog when retrieving from water. Labrador Retrievers are noted for their excellent temperaments. This breed is friendly, outgoing and eager to please. They are extremely intelligent and easily trained to perform a variety of complex tasks. These dogs were brought to England, probably on fishing boats. Originally black in color, the first recorded yellow Labrador appeared in a litter born in .Chocolates were also recorded at about the same time, but never achieved the same level of popularity as the blacks and yellows. Originally bred to retrieve from water, the modern Labrador Retriever has proven to be one of the most versatile breeds, excelling in hunt tests and field trials, in obedience and agility events, and also as service dogs. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:.

Lifespan Sociability The Shepherd Inu is a hybrid breed that combines two purebreds. This is usually done to bestow at least some of the beneficial traits of one breed onto the other, to create a dog that is even better suited to a particular application. Because they are not purebred, you may also find them in a local shelter. Adoption costs vary by shelter but are usually a low adoption fee. The Shiba Inu can be prone to aggression, having been used as a personal protection dog in Japan and having been bred to hunt. The German Shepherd has also been used as a protection dog so you need to take precautions to try and ensure that your puppy will be suited to family life. Because the breed is not recognized by Kennel Clubs, it can be difficult to find breeders. Ask other owners and speak to breeders of either parent breed. Look for breed groups on social media and dog forums. It was first reared as a hunting breed in around B. C although its ancestors date back to as early as B. It was bred to hunt birds and small game, flushing them out from their hiding place so that their handlers could better hunt them. During World War II, heavy bombing attacks wiped many of the dogs out, with many of those remaining falling foul of distemper, which is a viral infection. Extensive breeding programs have helped rescue the breed from the brink of extinction and the modern breed most closely resembles that of the Shinshu variety. Following the war, many people shunned items that were associated with Germany, and because the breed bore the name German Shepherd, it fell out of favor. In some countries, breeders changed its name to Alsatian. It is now one of the most popular breeds in the world and is ranked as the second most popular breed in the USA. The temperament of your dog depends on which parent breed is dominant, but it also depends on socialization, training, and the temperament of the individual, as well as other factors. They can make excellent family pets, superb working dogs, and great all-around companions, depending on what you are looking for. It should be noted that this hybrid is not recommended for novice owners. The German Shepherd has long been utilized as a guard dog, while the Shiba Inu is regarded as being prone to aggression. Experienced handlers may be able to get the best from the breed but novice trainers can struggle. Are Shepherd Inus Good for Families? As such, it is not recommended to have one around young children. Although your dog may never pose a threat to your children, they can be wary of strangers. They can also be very protective of their family, which means that they can become alarmed when children are playing with others and the games get particularly loud or boisterous. If you do get a Shepherd Inu and have a family, ensure that it is well socialized from a young age and that you have a firm grasp on training. Do not use aggressive training techniques, but you will need to be assertive and masterful. Puppy and training classes are considered beneficial because they teach owners how to train the dog and encourage good behavior. They also allow socialization in an environment with other dog owners. This means that they may not be best suited to life in an apartment because they are likely to bark a warning whenever they hear neighbors passing or your neighbors opening their doors. The cross can be territorial and may be protective over items, people, and even areas that they believe belong to them. The exact amount you need to feed depends on age, activity level, and the current and target weight of your dog but you should expect to feed approximately two cups of good quality dry food per day. Follow manufacturer instructions when feeding wet food, and if you feed a combination diet then make sure that you adjust the levels of dry and wet food accordingly. German Shepherds, in particular, are known for their prowess in canine sports and agility. In fact, they have a canine sport that was created specifically for them. Schutzhund is designed to test everything from agility to strength and the bond between the dog and handler. Because Schutzhund has been opened up and allows dogs of any breed to enter, you can enroll your Shepherd Inu mix to take part. On the one hand, you have the responsive, alert, and typically obedient German Shepherd. On the other, you have the somewhat stubborn and headstrong Shiba Inu. Depending on which your puppy takes after, you could have a dog that is difficult to train or one that picks up commands quickly and listens when you issue a command. The German Shepherd is ranked as the third most intelligent dog breed, behind the Border Collie and the Poodle. It is this responsiveness and intelligence that has seen it employed in so many service roles. Be assertive and masterful when training. It will need brushing at least twice a week throughout the year and will suffer from serious bouts of shedding at least once a year. Regular brushing removes dead hairs and can detangle knots, reducing the amount of shed hair left on sofas and clothes, but there will always be some hairs to deal with. Because your dog cannot brush its own teeth, you will also have to help ensure good dental hygiene. Brush teeth at least three times a week, ideally starting when your dog is a puppy to get it used to the process. This will usually need doing every two or three months, depending on how much time they spend walking and running on hard surfaces. If you struggle to cut nails, you can ask a professional groomer or even your vet to assist with this. Proponents of hybrid breeding claim that hybrid vigor reduces the chances of a hybrid from developing the hereditary conditions of either parent, while opponents claim that the hybrid has an increased chance of developing the hereditary diseases of both parent breeds. German Shepherds are somewhat prone to arthritis, which can be painful and debilitating. As a large breed, they are also more likely to develop joint dysplasia. Given the ancient history of the breed, the exact first crossbreeding of the Shiba Inu is challenging to pin down. However, because of its history, it stands to reason that the Shiba Inu was crossbred long before it became popularized in the late s and early s. This popularization is likely when the Shiba was first crossbred with other dogs. Captain von Stephanitz created the German Shepherd by blending together various German herding dogs — he was looking for the ultimate herding dog. Unfortunately, the Shiba Inu German Shepherd is a very active dog requiring at least 45 minutes of daily exercise, with multiple off-leash or free-roaming opportunities. The average lifespan of a Shiba Inu German Shepherd mix is between 8 and 12 years. Friendliness: Friendly with kids and other domestic pets. Nature: Loving and devoted. Shepherd Inus are attentive and protective, with a gentle but firm demeanor. They flourish in active roles that allow them to work out each day; without enough physical activity, they may become bored or destructive toward their home environment. These dogs love being around family owners because of how considerate they can be when it matters most — which makes Shepherd owners adore this breed even more! The Shepherd Inu is an excellent family dog, with the ability to recognize people who come around frequently. They are not lapping dogs or attention seekers; however, they do require some time to spend alone every day in order for their minds and spirit to be at peace! The face is usually somewhere between the two in terms of shape and muzzle length, but there are some pups where you can clearly see their German Shepherd parentage from behind those large ears or droopy tail that trails after them as they go about doing what dogs do best — hunting! There are some pups who inherit traits from both parents while others can be much clearer in terms of their inherited dispositions. This dog has an air of elegance about them with their long body and compact shape! Facial Look: The Shiba Inu German Shepherd mix has a fox-like face that would be preferable to have if you are an admirer of this dog breed. Is it red and white? Or just black with some light patches on it that may or may not be what they seem to be at first glance. They have an intense loyalty to their family and people that borders on obsession but can be trained out if need be to behave otherwise. As intelligent as they are energetic, these dogs require plenty of exercises to maintain both physically healthy sides — going for walks or runs with you each day will do wonders! If you want the best care possible for this furry friend then make sure their coat is well maintained through the bathing season! You should keep this breed of dog away from toddlers who may be too rough or inconsiderate when they play. Friendly with other Pets: A Shiba Inu GSD Mix has a natural instinct to chase after small animals without hesitation, so it would be best not to mix your new pup with cats. However, you can attempt at an early year if possible. Well, this is an exception that proves the rule because these particular dogs seem to be getting on pretty good terms here! However, they can be territorial and will warn you if another dog comes near them first-time or frequently enough to warrant attention from their owner. Despite this negativity surrounding the breed in general society has branded them as aggressive — which is rare for these animals! Exercise: These little bundles of energy are the perfect companion for anyone who needs an active, enthusiastic friend. Shiba Inu German Shepherd Mix will keep you on track with their love and lots of playtimes! And while most people think that all hybrid animals need at least 75 minutes of exercise per day just like any other animal would need more than its own kind in order to stay healthy. Because of their German Shepherd ancestry, these pups have a natural inclination to get safeguarding of ones who own them. They were originally bred to be watch-trained, but make great guards as well! Food Requirements: You may be wondering what the importance of choosing good dog food for your dog is. Your pup needs qualified advice to grow and develop properly. The basic health issues of this breed are as follows: Glaucoma. If a Shiba Inu Mix takes after their Shiba parent, they will be a small, intelligent, affectionate, energetic, and sometimes mischievous dog that loves spending time with their favorite humans. The Shiba Inu is an affectionate and loving dog with their families, but tends to be more reserved around strangers. As long as they have been properly socialized, they will warm up once introduced. They get along well with children and other dogs, but their high prey drive means extra socialization with smaller pets in the household. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a Shiba Inu Mix. Meeting the mother in person can give you an idea of what her temperament is like and allows you to see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started some socialization and training, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Shiba Inu are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes as well as apartments as long as they get enough daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. They are sensitive to heat and very cold temperatures. They also get bored easily and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Shiba Inu Mix. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed so that you are aware of any quirks they may potentially pass on. A mix could end up inheriting none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds; good breeding practices make a huge difference. From the Shiba side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Shiba Inu Mix include sensitive skin, skin allergies, glaucoma, and hypothyroidism. Although the Shiba Inu is an intelligent dog that can pick up on things quickly, they also tend to have a strong will and a stubborn streak. This can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle alone, so puppy training classes are recommended. The other parent breed could make a Shiba Inu Mix easier or more difficult to train. A Shiba Inu Mix can end up with a coat just like one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both of them. If they end up with the Shiba coat, they will shed moderately year-round. Daily brushing and a monthly or occasional bath are usually enough to keep a Shiba coat looking great. Cutting nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis, with careful cleanings when needed, help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed can help prevent dental diseases later in life. Shiba Inu have a more moderate activity level, but will have a lot of energy when they play. If the other parent breed is lower or higher energy, then you will need to be prepared for that potential range in a mix. A fully-grown Shiba Inu usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. poodle puppies toy - Snow Capped Shepherd Rescueis a Denver, Colorado based, volunteer-run non-profit c 3 organization. We do not have a shelter, instead all of our rescued dogs are housed with caring foster families…a temporary stop on their way to happily-ever-after. The problem. The reason so many dogs and cats have to be rescued in the first place is that there are not enough homes. Too many dogs and cats are sadly born to die. Do your part, spay and neuter your pets and encourage others to do the same. The solution. We rescue White German Shepherds of all sizes, ages and personalities. These dogs come to us from former owners, shelters or as strays. Sadly, shelters and humane societies are over-run with homeless pets and tragically must euthanize thousands of adoptable pets every month to make room for more. Why would you need to buy a pet when so many are in need? Foster homes provide care and love for these wonderful dogs while we work to find them permanent homes. Plus, by living in a true home setting, our adoptable animals become better prepared for their new adopted families. Matching responsible guardians with our adoptable dogs takes place through our adoption process. We carefully interview potential adopters to ensure that the right match is made. We ask questions about lifestyle, desired activity level, work situation and gather other pertinent information from potential adopters. Too often pets end up unwanted because they were never a good match for their previous home in the first place. At Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue, we look for people who intend to provide a home for a lifetime and understand what that requires. Visit their website for more information on how your kids can have fun at camp too! That way, you have a reliable reference to start from if you need to adopt or help a German Shepherd in need of a home. The Rescue is run by volunteers with a heart for saving homeless GSDs and finding new loving families for them. Others are surrendered to the Rescue by owners who can no longer keep their dogs for varied reasons. Some reasons include moving out of the area or a lifestyle change. Front Range Rescue welcomes any volunteer willing to lend a hand. There are different ways you can help the Rescue: Become a foster. The process starts with filling out a foster form. Walk dogs in boarding facilities. Provide transportation to vet appointments. Assess the homes of potential adopters. Make a monetary donation. German Shepherd lovers who wish to adopt a dog from Front Range Rescue should meet certain conditions and provide specific details. The adoption process commences when you fill out the application form. All items on the form must be completed for it to be processed. You must provide the name of your veterinarian or at least one you previously worked with. You are required to provide references who will be contacted by phone. Volunteers at Front Range Rescue have an answer for potential adopters in weeks. A meeting with the dog and the eventual adoption will follow after that. We are always looking for new volunteers — providing temporary foster homes for these dogs is the big need, but there are many more opportunities to help. Please consider joining our efforts. We also help owners who, due to unforeseen circumstances, find themselves unable to keep their dogs. Adopting Your New Canine Family Member All of the Front Range adoptable dogs are home fostered, or in cases where no foster home is available, some may even be boarded. Approved Applicants will receive detailed info on how to meet select dogs. Our entire adoption process typically takes no more than weeks from your submitting the application until you have a dog in your home. We rely solely on volunteers to place our dogs. Our volunteers have busy lives with their own families, jobs, school, pets, etc. We DO NOT discuss individual dogs with applicants until the adoption process has been completed because there is often more than one applicant interested in a particular dog, and we do not want to promise the same dog to more than one applicant. You can take home a shelter dog the same day. The first step is to submit a completed application. Your application does not obligate you to adopt, nor does accepting an application represent approval of that application. You do not apply to adopt a particular dog. The more open you are to gender, color and age, the more likely you are to find a dog with us. Next, we call your vet and your references. We are looking for people with a history of good pet care. Ideal applicants have lots of experience working with GSDs or large breed dogs. We want homes that accept that they are rescuing a dog and are willing to work with the dog to make him a good citizen. Yes, you will have to do some work. We will schedule a home visit. Once you have been approved to adopt from us we will contact you about suitable dogs and put you in contact with the foster parents. Since the foster parents know the dog the best, they are a key part of the process in determining which home and family is best suited for their foster dog. We get dogs into rescue on a regular basis and they are placed with previously approved adopters who have been waiting for their forever dog. It is best not to focus on any specific dog until you have been approved. We welcome your interest in a dog that may steal your heart but please remember that the dogs posted on our site today will most likely go to homes of applicants that applied weeks ago. Once dogs are available, we work with our current, approved applications until we find the right family for the dog. Once you are ready to adopt, we will give you all the information we have on the dogs for which you may be a good match.

I adhere to the Code of Ethics set forth by the Golden Retriever Club of America when it comes to breeding, and put a lot of time and research into planning each litter. My goal is to produce beautiful, healthy Golden Retriever puppies with stellar temperaments that can excel in any venue whether it be conformation, agility, obedience, therapy work, or any other activity, but most importantly, as treasured companions.
