By Kieran Beckles Updated on 15 February While Beaucerons are faithful and obedient pets, they have their pros and cons just like any other dog breed. At the time of writing, the Beauceron is ranked st most popular breed in the USA. Beaucerons are incredibly smart. This can make training easier as they can pick things up quickly. Watching them process the world and adapt to it is fascinating. They are typically fairly good problem solvers, work well independently, and love to learn. Melina talon. A pro for the breed is their intelligence! They are extremely smart and willing to please, and they love being active and having a job to do. We have a farm, and intend to do herding with him, and I cannot wait! For some people, this could be a con if they are not prepared to spend the extensive time to train them throughout their lives, and to let them expend their physical and mental energy. Versatility Caitlin watsonsupersleuth highlighted how the breed can excel at a range of different activities. Frequently called the Jack of All Trades, Beaucerons are a great breed if you want to dabble in a little bit of everything. Traditionally bred for herding, Beaucerons have also been used in various other sports including bite sports. Beaucerons like to be active so the more stuff they do the happier they typically are. They can be seen participating in almost everything from Agility to search and rescue. The biggest pro I have is their versatility. They can do almost anything you want them do, so they are a wonderful breed for dog sports! They excel in herding, obedience, protection sports, rally, agility, barn hunt and more. If you want a dog to compete with, a Beauceron would be a wonderful option! Congratulations, you will never pee alone again. If you have ever wanted someone to love you and always want to be with you, look no further. Beaucerons are really great about wanting to constantly be around their people, at least in the same room as you if not in your exact space. Beaucerons are intimidating looking but are actually cinnamon rolls. Typically big, loving, goofballs with their people, Beaucerons are often aloof with strangers. This can make travel and finding housing much easier. Aside from coat maintenance, nail trims and teeth brushing, Beauceron grooming is pretty minimal. They do shed a lot, but that can be managed with regular baths and brushings. I had a GSD when we first got married and he could not stand the hair. Thankfully, Talon has not come close to the German Shedder. So a Beauceron does have the potential to shed quite a bit, so that could be a con for a lot of people. Protective Instincts Talon the Beauceron Photo: talon. Another pro for me is their protective instinct. We live in a more rural area, and my kids and I are usually home alone most of the day. Beaucerons have an extremely powerful visual presence, which I definitely wanted, and they are more aloof to people they have not met. We took a lot of time from the beginning to socialize Talon with all kinds of people and dogs. So while he is great in all social situations, he still is alert and on guard when we are home and someone or something new arrives. This could be a con for people who want that Golden Retriever-type attitude. My Beauceron is friendly, but takes a little bit to warm up to someone new. They are incredibly smart, sometimes they think they are smarter than you, sometimes they are so smart they loop back to stupid. Due to their intelligence, they require a lot of mental stimulation to ensure their needs are met. They also tend to hate repetition which makes proofing a behavior hard. Size Caitlin watsonsupersleuth revealed that some Beaucerons can be clumsy and unaware of their power and size. They are big dogs with a tendency to fling their bodies around. They generally have no idea how big they actually are and no spatial awareness which can lead to things being knocked over or other accidents. Maturity Rate Caitlin watsonsupersleuth explained that having Beaucerons tend to be slow to mature — so prepare for an elongated puppy phase. Beaucerons are typically fully mature by years of age, unlike the typical for most breeds. Activity level Caitlin watsonsupersleuth warned potential Beauceron owners that the breed require consistent exercise and regular mental stimulation. Originally bred for moving and protecting large herds of sheep long distances, the Beauceron needs lots of physical and mental stimulation. This is not a couch potato dog. If you are willing to put in the training and to be active with these dogs they are fabulous. But they can be terrors without proper structure and stimulation. Nipping Talon the Beauceron Photo: talon. Beaucerons are traditionally a herding breed, meant to move sheep through various areas. This includes encouraging the less than willing through well placed nips. This behavior is instinctual for Beaucerons, especially as puppies. Proper training can help with this issue. Talon is wonderful with our two boys. He loves to play with them all day! Having a dog good with kids is definitely a pro, but Beaucerons grow extremely fast, and can soon outweigh and tower over younger kids. Being a shepherd breed, they tend to be mouthy, so you just have to make sure you are diligent in training them from a puppy to behave appropriately around small children, and Vice versa. Talon the Beauceron Photo: talon. I have an intact male who grew up with two dog in the house as well as accompanied me to countless house sitting jobs with dogs. We have almost never had a problem. Will a Beauceron protect you? Caitlin watsonsupersleuth : Without proper training, a Beauceron is no more likely to protect you than any other breed. Beaucerons are not any more prone to protect you than a golden retriever. There have been some very successful Beaucerons in bite sports and personal protection training, so if trained yes. They are instinctually observant and aloof, and will not hesitate to alert to danger. Are Beaucerons good with cats? Caitlin watsonsupersleuth : As with most breeds: with proper introductions and training around cats, yes Beaucerons will be good around cats. They are traditionally a herding breed, be cautious about chasing. My Beauceron adores cats, including my cat who has a tendency to beat him up. Are Beaucerons intelligent? Caitlin watsonsupersleuth : Incredibly so. Beaucerons are super smart dogs. They love puzzles and brain games, and are super fun to trick train because they pick things up really quickly. They do hate repetition, constantly test boundaries, and sometimes jump to the wrong conclusion, all which make training more challenging. They also tend to get into trouble testing boundaries -Beaucerons are the kind of dog you give an inch and they will try to snag a mile. They need a lot of mental stimulation and physical exercise. Are Beaucerons good first dogs? Beaucerons are a LOT of dog and can be very overwhelming for even seasoned owners. They are great dogs in the right situations, but definitely a hard dog. They are a large, powerful, and intelligent breed, so they will take more work and dedication for them to reach their full potential. You just have to know what you are getting into before you bring them home. If you prepare yourself and your home beforehand, you will have a much easier time. This is the biggest reason that I advocate for finding a great breeder. A breeder will be there for you for the life of your dog. They know so much about their breed and can help you through any issues you may have. The Beauceron is a loyal, regal dog who will mature and develop in an environment with plenty of room to run and play. A socialized early-trained beauceron makes for great family pets as well! The dog has been more well known in France, but they can sometimes be mistaken for Doberman Pinschers because of their appearance or demeanor. They were also used as trackers during World War II when sent into mining areas where there could still be explosives left behind after previous wars had destroyed them previously! They have dark expressive eyes, hinting at their intelligence and mental capacity for learning new things quickly — often seen in dogs with small stature like this one! Ears: The Beauceron German Shepherd Mix is an energetic, brave dog with cropped ears that stand high off the head. Eyes: Intense, expressive brown eyes are what make the Beauceron breed so intelligent. Nose: Their nose is black in color. Height: Male dog ranges from .Weight: Male dog ranges from 70 to pounds whereas Female dog ranges from 70 to pounds. Coat length and color: The Beauceron German Shepherd Mix is a rugged breed with two main types of colors. The dog can be fully black and tan, or it could have uneven speckled markings on various parts of its body including face, chest and legs. You get so close and personal — they will follow wherever you go! The Beauceron is a clever and loyal dog. The best way you can provide this? It sheds heavily during spring and fall, but only minimally the rest of the year. Be sure they have clean water at all times as well dental hygiene by brushing their teeth twice weekly — Beauceron German Shepherd Mix loves nothing better than chewing on things so make it easy on yourself by keeping them happy through durable chew toys like rope discs made out tough leathers which will last longer than most other materials. Temperament: Do you want your new puppy to be the perfect pet? Some people prefer not only obedience but also certification with a professional. The first thing is that they love a good-standard diet. Commercialized dog foods are made with all their nutritional needs in mind which will make them happy eaters too! Be sure to consult your vet before giving any food that might be too challenging for Beaucerons. Beauceron German Shepherd Mix requires more complex foods with higher levels of nutritional value because these make them feel accomplished when Eating something different from what was last fed on since it takes longer time periods between meals due to high metabolism rates plus active lifestyles indoors all day long! Exercise and Games: The Beauceron is a herding breed who also has strong hunting instincts. One of the smartest dogs in existence, one would think that Beauceron are just an all-around great pet. However their hunting instincts make them perfect for competitive sports like Treibball or Parkour where they can test these skills! If you want to take it up a notch though, be sure not to miss out on flyball because the Beauceron German Shepherd Mix loves hanging around with other animals while chasing after ones who jump higher than themselves or have better reflexes. Adoptive Environment: The Beauceron is a high-energy breed that thrives on interaction. They would love to spend all their time with you, going on trips and picnics! Bloat: Bloat is a serious condition that can quickly become life-threatening. It often affects Beaucerons, since their chests are deeper than those of other breeds and this may make them more susceptible to bloat attacks. Symptoms include salivating or trying unsuccessfully to throw up; pacing rapidly while breathing rapidly due an excess air bubble in the stomach , looking distressed—the list goes on! Hip Dysplasia: If you have a large dog, it is important to know that they are more likely than smaller breeds of dogs to develop hip dysplasia. This condition occurs when the ball joint at their hips pops out and causes pain for your pooch! Allergies: Beauceron German Shepherd Mix are subjected to certain allergies. Most commonly, they are beef or chicken-based food allergy symptoms that may be caused by wheat products such as cereal grains and cornmeal; although soy is also seen in some cases of allergic reaction from the protein derived from these ingredients einkorn. It can even act like your bodyguard! This breed performs well across many different disciplines such as agility trials where they excel particularly well on fly balls; Schutzhund matches where these dogs excel. Post navigation.
As a medium to large-sized dog breed, Boxers need more time to fill out and reach their full size than smaller dog breeds. As with many things, prevention is always better than treatment. Taking your Boxer to regular veterinary appointments is one of the best things you can do for their health, along with consistent love and care at home. One of the best things you can do at home is brush your dog's teeth regularly to help prevent painful periodontal disease and avoid pricey dental treatments in the future. Periodontal disease can cause bad breath and oral pain for your pup and may require your Boxer to have a dental cleaning or tooth extractions under anesthesia at some point in their lives if not attended to at home. Keeping your Boxer at a healthy weight is crucial for their longevity, overall health, and happiness. If your Boxer is overweight, talk to your veterinarian to develop a weight loss strategy so that you can get them back on track. Consult with your veterinarian about the ideal food and exercise for your Boxer. Like all dogs, Boxers have certain conditions that they are prone to. Brachycephalic syndrome increases their risk of respiratory distress, allergies, heatstroke, and sinus problems. Regular veterinarian appointments are crucial in finding and treating illness early to give your Boxer the healthiest and longest life possible. Unfortunately, veterinary bills can be costly with many treatments for emergencies and illnesses, such as heart problems, being thousands of dollars to treat. When surveyed, .The financial safety net provided by pet insurance is why pet insurance is worth it for many pet parents. Keep in mind that even healthy behaviors, like exercise, can be overdone. There is no doubt one might be tempted to get bring home one of these loving fellas. The growth in dogs has much to say about their health and potential — but how? While growing up dogs that suffer from some diseases might stagnate more than others. Boxers are a medium to large dog breed and are pretty safe from the usual bone and muscle disorders in larger dogs. However, hip dysplasia remains one of the most common issues. Reputable breeders will let you meet the parents and give you contacts from owners of puppies born in previous litters. Most Boxer puppies will correspond just fine to the ranges mentioned for their age. It is super important to not rush the growing process. Dogs that are overweight can experience problems later on in life that might have been avoided by maintaining an appropriate body condition. Moreover, the veterinarian can have the pup checked for possible health conditions causing the slow growth. Photo by otsphoto on Shutterstock Even with late bloomers, there is no reason to worry. Some dogs experience growing episodes sooner than others. The same rules apply to puppies that grow too fast. Damage due to wrong feeding can be avoided by using high-quality premium food and sticking to the recommendations according to weight and age on the labels. Never miss out on consulting your vet on the topic first — they will be glad to guide you through it! Boxer Growth Stages Until they reach adulthood, Boxers go through 3 growth stages. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. At the end of the first stage, they can reach around 4. At 1 month of age, their stuffed muscle figure comes at about 5. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Our articles on sleeping through the night and establishing a nighttime routine will give you extra tips on getting through this phase. A puzzle toy or Kong will work great at making them feel like you leaving them is actually something quite fun. Potty training All new puppy parents expect potty training to be on the cards. It will help to remember your Boxer pup is a bit of a goofball. For now, we definitely want to let your pup get used to you and settle into their new home. Teach your puppy about surfaces — Different surfaces can feel strange to pups. Use surfaces like grass, moss, paving and sand. Basically, make their tail wag and we bet yours will too. Teach your Boxer their name. Teach your Boxer puppy to sit. Remember what we said about Boxers and their jumping? Recall — Trust us. Preventing resource guarding Resource guarding is where your dog fiercely protects something they have and will do everything they can to keep hold of it. Dogs can resource guard food, a toy, even a person. You can do this by teaching them that hands and touch can be a good thing. As always, back up your soft touches with some treats. Remember that consent is also a thing with dogs! Never force your Boxer to be handled or pick them up against their wishes. Socialization exercises to do this week Training to do this week Husbandry Tasks to do this week — Fireworks — Watch the world go by outside your house — Play dress up. You will notice that there is a range in both height and weight. Use the lighter weights for female Boxers and the heavier weights for male Boxers. This principle also applies to the variations in heights. Females tend to weigh less and be smaller in size than males. Between 6 — 12 months of age, Boxers are no longer considered puppies since they start to reach sexual maturity. Boxers are considered adolescents between 6 months to 24 months, and at 2 years old Boxers reach adulthood. They will continue to grow until they are 18 to 24 months old. How long does it take for a Boxer to be fully grown? As a medium-sized dog breed, Boxers need more time to reach their full size and weight than smaller dog breeds. On average, Boxers will grow until they are 18 to 24 months old. At 2 years old, Boxers are full-grown, reaching their full height and weight. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the breed standards. If your Boxer is less than two years old, he or she is likely still growing. Insider Tip: To estimate how big and heavy your Boxer will get, you can contact the breeder. Puppies rarely exceed their parents weight and height. Boxers above this average may be classed over-weight. Check with your vet to get an accurate diagnosis since more athletic dogs will have bigger muscles and will weigh more. It is important to recognize if your Boxer adds extra weight so that you can adjust his or her lifestyle. After, you just need to deduct your weight to find out how the weight of your Boxer. However, the bigger they get, the trickier it gets for them to stand still on such a small scale. Measure at the withers shoulder whilst standing. Try it out below:.
Considering an English Cream Labrador? These gentle companions have a creamy, white coat that contrasts nicely with their dark eyes and noses. English Cream Labradors are generally medium-to-large dogs with strong bodies and thick tails. What is an English Cream Labrador? These dogs have been friendly companions and useful working dogs since the s. Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland where fishermen depended on them to jump into the cold water to retrieve ropes, nets, and even catch a fish or two. The breed spread around Europe and quickly became trusty hunting companions. You can keep your lab entertained for hours with a game of fetch in a nearby lake. Thanks to their strength and stamina, Labrador Retrievers are often used as therapy and service dogs. You may see them sniffing for contraband at the airport or helping someone with a disability manage their day-to-day responsibilities. English Labs make excellent companions who will happily tag along for hikes through the forest or spend a quiet day at home with their families. English Labradors get along great with children and their high energy levels make them perfect playmates. Caring for your English Labrador Adopting your first English Labrador is an exciting and rewarding experience. Rambunctious puppies will need proper training and socialization for when they mature into adulthood and become lovable, mellow companions. Just be sure your dog gets enough daily exercise to stay healthy. Grooming English Labradors will require lifelong grooming, and getting your dog adjusted to a regular grooming schedule as a puppy will make the process much easier. English Labradors have short, thick coats that tend to shed an average amount. To manage shedding, brush your dog several times a month with a bristle brush and give them a bath every month. Dogs that go swimming in natural bodies of water will need more frequent baths to prevent odors. Be sure to wipe their ears with a clean, dry towel to prevent infections. Treats should be given in moderation to prevent weight issues. Training Puppies will need lots of training and socialization to help manage their high levels of energy, but many owners find that their pups are eager to learn and enjoy training. Puppy training classes are a great way to work on obedience and socialization all in one session. You can also take your puppy out for walks in the park to get them used to different people and animals. If your dog starts acting hyperactive or destructive at home, they likely just need a little more regular exercise and socialization to adjust their behavior. Health Labrador Retrievers tend to be very healthy dogs, and reputable breeders will screen for common canine health problems. The average lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is years. Labs may develop a dangerous stomach condition called bloat, according to the AKC. The breed is also susceptible to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow problems, and obesity. You can learn more about Smokey Mountain Labs online. To get in touch, call or email gene smokymtnlabradors. They are intelligent and easily trained, making them a popular choice for families. They are also active and enjoy spending time outdoors. These pups typically have a calm demeanor, but they can also be playful and energetic. This easygoing nature makes them excellent companions for families with young children or seniors. All of these factors make the English Cream Lab an ideal pet for anyone looking for a loyal and loving companion. English Cream Lab Puppy Health Considerations Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around years — our English Cream Labs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our English Cream Lab puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Allergies are the most common concern, and can be caused by anything from pollen to food ingredients. Hip and elbow dysplasia are both joint problems that can cause pain and mobility issues. Eye problems can range from minor infections to more serious conditions such as glaucoma. Finding an English Cream Lab puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While they may look like they require a lot of grooming, English Cream Labs are actually quite low maintenance when it comes to their coat. A weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove any dead hair and keep their coat looking shiny and healthy. And while they do shed, it is typically not as much as other breeds. When it comes to coat care, the key is to be gentle and avoid using harsh shampoos or chemicals that can strip the natural oils from their coat. With a little care and attention, your English Cream Lab will have a beautiful coat that is the envy of all your friends. English cream Labradors can be purebred dogs, and they usually are. A pedigree dog is one that has a recorded history of parentage through a dog related breed association. They list the approved colors that puppies can be. Labrador breeders and owners have a bit of wiggle room here, as the AKC specifies that the yellow coat color may vary from light cream to fox red. This is because there are several genes that can influence what coat color a Labrador Retriever puppy grows up to display. This is true even though there are only two different color pigments that create the entire variety of dog coat colors. These are eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin is a black pigment. Phaeomelanin is a red pigment. The many shades of the yellow Labrador coat color are produced when different genes interact with the red phaeomelanin pigment. You might wonder how a red pigment could turn out cream colored, which is a great question that it took canine geneticists a long time to answer! The default color for phaeomelanin without any additional genetic influence is actually yellow or gold. Some genes can make this default color darker or more intense. Other genes will cause the color to become lighter or paler. Breeding English Cream Labrador Puppies Interestingly, canine geneticists have now identified a specific gene sequence that may produce the lighter cream yellow coat color more consistently. English Cream Labrador breeders can use this type of information to breed selectively for a more desirable coat color. However, even when a breeder is very familiar with the genetics of their personal breeding dogs, some coat color differences are to be expected. For example, some Labrador puppies may grow up to have slightly darker English Cream coats while other puppies may grow up to have lighter or even white-appearing coats. The English cream Labrador coat color is eye-catching and perhaps less customary in the world of Labrador Retriever breeding. Why is this important to remember? In America, the Lab has topped this list for more than three decades. In the United Kingdom, the Lab regularly hits the second or third most popular spot. Be wary of any breeder who markets their English Cream Labrador puppies as rare and uses this as a reason to inflate the price you pay. Always focus your search on reputable Labrador breeders who put puppy health first. Buying an English Cream Puppy Just like other trends, different dog coat colors go in and out of fashion. Longtime Labrador Retriever carers also often develop their own preferences based on experiences with past pet Labradors or with previous working Labrador dogs. The English Cream Labrador coat color is quite popular right now. You might have a wait to find your perfect puppy. Be sure you select a breeder with a proven track record for producing healthy English Cream Labrador puppies. Ask to review pre-screening health test results for both parent dogs. Also verify that your breeder will give you a record of all vaccinations and an initial health guarantee. This will give you the best chance of making a commitment to a healthy, happy English Cream Lab puppy. Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. If your GSD is older than 36 months and continues to put on weight, contact your veterinarian to ensure weight gain does not lead to obesity. How big should a 6-month-old German Shepherd be? A six-month-old German Shepherd puppy will be quite large, as many German Shepherds undergo massive growth spurts between two and five months old. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. How much bigger will my German Shepherd get? There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get. First, check your puppy's age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing! Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog and means your pup is likely still growing! Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents. What is the size of a full-grown German shepherd? An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard. The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds. Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Some dogs will be both smaller and larger than these weight ranges when fully grown due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Learn all about your puppy's physical characteristics, breed history, personality traits, and more in our comprehensive guide. Height: 26 inches Ratio: .This should give you their height. For example, 26 inches times 0. Using the other example, .Since each dog is going to be different, you need to look at their overall body condition rather than a weight range. Fortunately, there are body conditioning charts that you can use to figure out if your German Shepherd is at their ideal weight. Just look at them from the side and from above, feeling for ribs and pelvic bones when necessary. Younger dogs will also typically be on the thin side before they fully fill out as adults. Years of line breeding has produced several distinct types of Shepherds. Show dogs are known for a sloped back in which the back legs are shorter than the front. This unnatural formation can cause back and hip problems along with an abnormal gait. German Shepherds bred for show will also be thinner than their hardworking cousins. As you can see in this picture, this is a show-bred German Shepherd with an obvious curved back and short back legs. Working dogs, on the other hand, are bred for a sturdy, straight back so they can work long hours without getting sore. They tend to be thicker than show dogs and will, therefore, weigh more, even at the same height. As you can see in this picture, this dog has a straighter back and longer back legs, so it has been bred for working. Something else I wanted to mention here is that, according to some sources, Black German Shepherds are larger than their bi-colored cousins, despite being otherwise the same. So, if you have one of these rare and beautiful creatures, you can follow the same charts that were listed above. If your German Shepherd is diagnosed by a veterinarian as underweight or overweight for their age, then the first thing you should do is ask him or her to help you figure out the underlying cause of the problem. This will determine what should be done next. Do you have a giant German Shepherd? What about a tiny one? Comment below to tell us more about it! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. American German shepherds have straighter backs then German shepherds. If you have a german shepherd and their lineages are close to their German roots they will have that arch in their back. As the German Shepherd growth chart suggests, a German Shepherd dog reaches full size and adult weight after one year. A growth spurt can occur between 1. The result of this late growth is an up to 10 percent increase in height and weight. Although you can consider a German Shepherd fully grown by one year, there may be additional factors that influence the growth of German Shepherd dogs. Is Your German Shepherd Healthy? Improper development can occur for many reasons. It could be as simple as your dog responding poorly to their dog food. Your feeding schedule and portions might not be sufficient. Your dog could also have a basic nutritional deficiency that you need to correct. Yet, being underweight or overweight can signify serious health problems. Weight loss can occur when the syndrome develops. Dogs typically show signs of EPI at between six months and six years of age. Parasites Dogs are highly susceptible to parasites. Deworming medication helps to reduce the risk. Yet, almost all puppies experience a parasitic infection at least once. Upon infection, your dog is at risk of serious weight loss and other troubling symptoms. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes mellitus can affect any breed but has an above-average occurrence in German Shepherds. These dogs need insulin daily to accommodate for the inability to metabolize sugars. If your German has diabetes, severe weight loss can occur in a short period. Diabetes typically affects canines that are four years or older. It is the most common cancer in German Shepherds. Up to three percent will develop HSA. In most cases, this condition sets in at around nine to 12 years. Dietary Deficiency Do you have your German Shepherd on a raw food diet? Puppies often run underweight when receiving their nutritional requirements through raw meat. This diet is healthy and effective but needs monitoring, as not all dogs respond the same. Review the diet plan with a veterinarian and confirm there are no digestive or metabolic issues. Also, do not forget the importance of exercise! Clear Your Concerns with Coverage You put your heart into loving your dog like a child, but some things are out of your control. Health struggles can affect canines as much as humans. Even purebreds from AKC-certified breeders are not safe from serious health struggles both early and late in life. All you can do is prepare yourself to overcome complications. At week 8, they play, can be housebroken, and bark when startled. The famous GSD ears will start to stand up, and you can begin leash and crate training. They must be handled and groomed and realize that human commands and dominance are the norm. During this time, the mother will nurse the pups until they are old enough to begin eating puppy mush , which is softened kibble. Allow puppies to eat as much as they like at each meal. At 6—8 weeks, their first shot from the vet is due. Smith, Shutterstock 12 weeks is a turning point for your pup. Their coordination will come on in bounds, as will their learning and social skills. They will be eager to learn but easily distracted, so have plenty of patience. If you become angry, it will stunt development if they become fearful of you. Your pup is officially into the juvenile period now. All of his puppy teeth should be developed by now and are normally very sharp. So, beware of your fingers when playing. At 12 weeks of age, puppies can start to eat three to four set meals a day with measured amounts. Purpose-made dog-approved chew toys are best, not teddy bears or old shoes. As they grow through this period between three and six months, GSD puppies are more juvenile than babies. They will be more boisterous and energetic. But on the plus side will feed easily, be more friendly with animals and people alike, and more than likely be housetrained if you have managed them correctly. They will be stubborn at this age when training and could ignore you, or not come when called. The best approach is to ignore any sassy attitude and only praise and fuss when back to being obedient. His internal organs and systems are fully developed and functioning as they should, while the skeleton is still growing. His full set of adult teeth should be present and correct. Your GSD is now becoming independent and will want to roam different areas and interact with their world on many more levels. Be aware that they could weigh 50 lbs at 6 months, so caution is needed with control and safety as they explore. He may also seemingly forget commands that he has been taught. It is best to ignore, not mollycoddle, any fearful reactions to new things to not reinforce the negative behaviors. By 6 months of age, you can reduce the feedings to three per day, now paying attention to the total calories consumed. Between the ages of 4—6 months, he will shed his puppy coat too. He might still be a bit goofy, gangly, and stubborn when it comes to training. German Shepherd females are reaching sexual maturity at this age. They may have their first estrus heat period. So, be mindful of letting them off the lead during this time if other dogs are around. At 9 months, your GSD can be tested for heartworm and treated if needs be. Speak with your vet about this for more detail. You can add small amounts of solid adult formula into the puppy food to get him used to the texture. Making it the optimal time to stimulate them as much as you can with obedience training and work activities. Your GSD should be comfortable in all situations, and with all types of company as their bond with humans should be well established. Their unique personality and quirks should be apparent and set them apart as your dog. They will have developed vocal and body language traits that you recognize and use for their needs. If male, he will be reaching sexual maturity and cocking his leg when urinating. He might also be looking to challenge dogs and humans for the title of pack leader. The key to cementing all your hard work so far is to be consistently firm with any boundaries he tries to push. By 12 months, they should be on adult formula only. German Shepherds stop growing between 2 and 3 years. This is when they fill out too. It starts to slow at around the age of 1, but he will continue to grow until he reaches maturity. During this time, they are considered to be adolescents. This is the same for their mental maturity too. This is the same for all German Shepherd types. Females tend to mature faster, both physically and mentally, than male German Shepherds. There are different stages within this time frame before maturity. And these are the neonatal stage 1—2 weeks , the transitional stage 2—4 weeks , the socialization stage 4 weeks to 3 months , the juvenile stage 3—6 months , and the adolescent stage 6 months to 2 years. Research has shown that neutering dogs can affect their growth. But how exactly? But early indications show that early neutering can increase the length of time that the bone grows. Meaning potentially taller dogs. But this also poses questions about whether this affects the joint alignment and whether it can cause any problems. And for the German Shepherd breed and his heightened propensity for hip dysplasia, this is a concern to be aware of. But waiting for full skeletal maturity also poses risks. Because neutering for females can reduce mammary cancer. If spayed before her first heat, it can eliminate the chances of this type of cancer altogether. As they will be able to offer you tailored advice for your German Shepherd. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth The dangers of growing too fast can affect their skeletal development. Conditions caused by growing too quickly are joint dysplasia and osteochondrosis. By feeding him a kibble that is designed for large-breed puppies will help control the rate at which his bones grow. This is because they have the optimum ratio of calcium and phosphorus levels in the food. So, always feed him large-breed puppy food during his developmental stage. This is most common in German Shepherds, but also in some Labrador Retrievers. It is an inherited disorder of growth hormone deficiency, and it will make the affected pooch always appear puppy-like. Growth Distinctions of Different German Shepherds. Frequently Asked Questions German Shepherds German Shepherd Dogs are one of the most popular breeds and are my absolute favorite breed. That's why I've had five in total, three boys and two girls. From their loyal and obedient personalities to their beautiful coats and markings, they bring joy to many homes, including mine. With impressive intelligence, these puppies are easy to train and make excellent companion animals. The German shepherd is a large breed, usually weighing between pounds for males and up to 75 pounds for females. Their coats require minimal grooming but will benefit from occasional brushing. German shepherds are very active dogs who love to run around; they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. They also enjoy activities such as agility training or nose work games where they can use their smarts! Factors Influencing Weight But what about their size? German shepherds can vary in size based on gender, age, nutrition, and because of their breeding. For example, a German working line shepherd is much more energetic than the more laid-back American show line dog. A puppy from working lines may weigh less than the average on the charts. Be sure to consider factors such as gender and environment when monitoring your pup's development. A good rule of thumb is that by eight weeks of age, a German Shepherd puppy should weigh between pounds, depending on the genetic factors mentioned above. By six months, most male puppies will weigh between 49lbs — 57lbs with an average weight of 53lbs, and a female will weigh between 44lbs — 49lbs with an average weight of 46lbs. For this reason, when consulting a weight chart for a German shepherd puppy, it's essential to understand the breed, lineage, and pedigree of the dog, as well as the sex of the dog. Our puppy weight charts are specific to German Shepherd Dogs and consider all these factors. It's an excellent tool for monitoring your pup's growth and health. These charts show the average expected weight range for male and female German shepherds at different ages, from puppies to adults. Knowing the expected range can help ensure your pup grows normally and stays within healthy boundaries. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. Our chart differs from others in that you can track your puppy's weight based on his actual weight at a point in time. Many other weight charts are either for non-specific breeds, or if they are specific to a German Shepherd, they only give you the averages and a range. While this is all useful and included in our charts, what is missing from many others is what weight your puppy will likely be based on his actual weight now. Most people bring their new puppy home at 8 weeks old 2 months. The range for a female German Shepherd puppy at that age is between lbs. As you already know your puppy's weight, you can estimate how much they are likely to weigh when older using our chart. For example, if your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old. To estimate how much they are likely to weigh at 6 months old, you would find that weight on the chart and follow it down to the 6-month-old row and see that she would most likely weigh 46lbs by the time she is 6 months old and 68lbs when fully grown. Of course, these are just estimates, and all puppies grow at different speeds, as will yours. Another way this chart is helpful is if, using the same example, your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old and then jumps to 49 lbs at 6 months old, instead of the predicted 46 lbs. In that situation, you would follow that new column down and see that she is now closer to weighing 70 lbs when fully grown. They are heavier-boned, more muscular, and have deeper chests. If you know what you're looking for, you can distinguish a male from a female German shepherd by looking at their heads, as a male is larger and have a more masculine look. Using the German Shepherd Puppy Weight Charts To use this chart, find your pup's current weight along the top and go down the left side of the chart to find his age. If he is in range, you can follow that column down to see what he will likely weigh at each age milestone. For example, if your male German Shepherd puppy weighs 18 lbs at 8 weeks old, then you would find the nearest weight at that age on the chart. In this case, it's .In this instance, he would weigh approximately .Under no circumstances should you try to adjust your dog's diet or exercise to fit in with the chart; it is merely a guide. German Shepherd Weight Chart for Female Puppies Female German shepherds, on the whole, have a much narrower head and nose and have an overall feminine look, especially around the eyes. If you know what you're looking for, you can guess whether they are male or female by looking at their face. Having said that, my girl, Ava, was very tall for a female and was often mistaken for a boy, even when she was wearing her pink collar and leash! But I still think her face was much more feminine than her brother Hudson's. This breed of dog has unique growth development. During the first three months of their life, a German Shepherd's body goes through a significant growth spurt. Typically, they can double their birth weight in the first week! At 12 weeks, you can expect your pup to weigh about pounds for a male and pounds for a female. This growth spurt will continue through five months old; by the time they're six months, you'll likely have a large, goofy puppy on your hands. After that initial growth period is over, you'll find that your German shepherd will gain weight slowly from then on out until it reaches its full adult size at around two or three years old. On average, female German Shepherds reach an adult weight of pounds, while males reach pounds. German Shepherd Puppy Height Chart German shepherds come in a range of sizes, some taller than others. It can be helpful to know the different heights of German shepherds to ensure that the one you choose fits your lifestyle and needs. When looking at a German shepherd height chart, it's essential to remember that males tend to be larger than females. Depending on where they were bred, most standard-sized male adults will stand between inches, while female adult German shepherds typically reach inches in height from paw to shoulder. Below is our height chart for German shepherd puppies you can use to estimate your puppy's height at each age milestone based on his starting or current height. It also includes the average percentage of adult height reached each age milestone. If your puppy's weight is outside the guidelines, it may be less of an issue than you think. Puppy weights can vary greatly depending on breed, genetics, and other factors included on this page. While ensuring your puppy receives proper nutrition and exercise is essential, several factors can influence their weight. One way to determine your puppy's adult weight is to check with your breeder. They can make an educated guess as to what your furry friend will weigh once they reach adulthood. A reputable breeder should have a good understanding of their dog's genetics and be able to provide insight into the typical size range of their litter. This information can give you a rough estimate of what weight you can expect for your German shepherd as they grow older. Another factor to consider when determining the adult weight of your pup is their parents' size, and again the breeder can give you much more information on this. You can also speak with your veterinarian about your puppy's overall health and development, and they may be able to provide some insight into their expected adult size. It's important to avoid becoming too fixated on your puppy's weight if they fall outside the standard guidelines. Don't worry if your puppy is a little bigger or smaller than listed here, and if you still want to determine their adult weight, you can also use the puppy weight chart for a large or giant breed dog here. Conclusion In conclusion,German Shepherds are a fantastic breed of dogs, and understanding their growth and development is essential for pet owners. Knowing the average weight and height of male and female German Shepherds can help you be better prepared for your new pup's growth. With the proper diet, exercise, and vet care, your German shepherd will be healthy and happy throughout their life. Keep in mind that these charts are only a general guide — every pup is different! A 3-month-old German Shepherd should weigh between 17 lbs - 26 lbs for a female, with an average weight of .For males, it'll be between 22 lbs and 30 lbs, with an average of 26 lbs. How much does a 5 month old German Shepherd puppy weigh? A 5-month-old puppy will weigh between 40 lbs - 49 lbs for a male with an average weight of .A female GSD puppy will weigh between 35 lbs - 44 lbs with an average of .When will my German shepherd puppy stop growing? Most German shepherd puppies continue growing until they are two or three years old. You might like these. However, there are certain breeds that are easier to train than others. Thankfully, German Shepherds fit into that category because they are very intelligent and quick learners. This includes house training , crate training , basic obedience commands as well as learning tricks. We recommend attending a puppy kindergarten class as part of your German Shepherd puppy socialization strategy. Once your pup knows their basic obedience commands, you can enroll them in Schutzhund training aka IPO. Partnership and teamwork between yourself and your dog are the basis for this type of training. Note that the Schutzhund environment is not a place for dogs with aggression issues, neither towards other dogs nor people! If they pass that initial level which includes a temperament test, they can move on to IPO 2 minimum age 19 months and IPO 3 minimum age 20 months. That said, protection dog trainers recommend starting training classes that include bitework and high jumps once your German Shepherd puppy is 12 months old. Dutch and Czech are two other languages that commands are frequently taught in. Stanley, my former long-haired GSD dog walking client, started going to Schutzhund training when he was a little over 12 months old. His owners practiced commands in German with him on a daily basis, and I remember getting a print out of his German commands as they asked me to use them on our walks as well. Lots, ha! German Shepherds need a minimum of 2 hours of physical exercise per day, but generally speaking, the more exercise you can provide your GSD with, the more they will thrive. Remember, German Shepherds are high-energy, athletic dogs bred to be active all day long, especially if they come from a working line! Physical Exercise Ideas for German Shepherds As far as physical exercise, this can be a mix of walks, runs, bike rides, fetch and playtime. This is Nala, one of my former pet sitting clients. She was crazy about frisbees and balls. One of my favorite ways of increasing the energy and calories a dog burns on a regular walk or hike is by using a doggie backpack. Mental Stimulation for German Shepherds Besides providing a good physical workout, dog backpacks also burn mental energy. As you probably know, bored dogs can quickly become destructive as they figure out ways of entertaining themselves. For example, chewing up your furniture and shoes, scratching doors, raiding your kitchen trash can or digging up your flower beds. So do yourself a favor and make sure your GSD gets plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog, and that applies to German Shepherds as much as it does to any other dog breed! Former GSD client Remi pooped after a long walk. Bottom Line So, how big does a German Shepherd get? Well, German Shepherds are medium to large size dogs, so they can weigh anywhere between lbs. That said, the average expected weight for a male GSD is between lbs, and the average expected weight for a female GSD is between lbs. Both reach sexual maturity somewhere between months and are considered fully grown at about the 2 year mark. Keeping that in mind, your GSD breeder should be able to give you a good general idea of how big your German Shepherd puppy will grow to be! Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist. Buster on the left was a very cool dog we only had for a little while. We bred him a couple times, but being it was a very busy time in our own lives, we only took just this one picture of him. That's a real loss, because Buster was well worth looking at. Buster was a highly athletic running dog of pounds, and 28" at the withers, so a very big dog, and very athletic. You just almost never see that in Johnson dogs that tend to be shorter, lazier and have poor structure. Buster had fantastic structure - solid pasterns, good angulation of the hock, thick loin, straight topline, great head, just an all around well built dog of subtance with all the necessary good points that allow great agility and long-term high activity in a dog. And man oh man, could our Buster Doodle Dog run and jump! I mean this boy was a track star.Buster was also a very, very smart dog and with huge bulldog personality. He used to put his front paws on both Becky and Maria when they were sitting on wheeled office chairs in the hard floored office, and then push them all around the room, bouncing them into walls and furniture, forcing them to play with and pet him. It was so funny, because Buster was a really big dog and so insistent about it. Becky would be sitting there at her computer working, and Buster would just walk up, pull out her chair - often very much against her will, climb on her and then push her all over the office, not letting her out of the chair. Finally she'd relent and take a few moments to pet him, and then he was happy and would go do something else, but he'd always return and do the same thing again in a bit. We were at a point that if there was some important office project someone was working on, Buster just needed to be outside, or you wouldn't get anything done. Buster was a bulldog through and through and just loved to mix it up with Doc - and Doc wasn't going for it, not in the least. Buster would walk up to Doc and place his paws on Doc's shoulders - a sign of dominance one dog will sometimes do to another, as if to say, "you know I'm the top dog here, right Doc? If you're another male dog, Doc is happy to get along, but you'd better not be pulling stuff like that on him, holy smokes! So Doc would snatch Buster up and just drive him into the ground and the fight would be on, basically anytime Buster did that, and Buster never, ever, ever had any hope of winning. I mean Doc was a really serious customer in a fight - so much so it would typically all be over and done before we even had time to respond to it, and Buster would be on his back still trying to fight, but often screaming for mercy too. We'd say, "Doc, let him go now," and Doc would go walking away, another life lesson taught, the "professor of doom" headed to a nice spot on the couch. And understand, Doc never hurt Buster, and he easily could have. We'd have never tolerated that. If male dogs seek to harm each other in such scuffles we get them apart and keep them apart. We don't endorse the fighting of dogs around here by far! It was purely a dominance thing though, and once proven, that was that and Doc would walk away, no harm done. The thing is though, Buster would try again and again - maybe a few days later, maybe ten minutes later. He just didn't care how many times Doc beat him up, he'd always come back for more. It was like a game to him. He knew what Doc would do. He knew that Doc was not playing and was going to literally bounce his head off the walls for him, but here he'd come, trying it all over again a couple times a week, and always wagging his tail happily as he climbed up on Doc. During the time we had Buster, he was bred to both Bella and Lilly, both times making for some simply awesome long-legged, very correct and substantial running dogs. If you have an unfixed male Buster puppy, we'd be interested in him. If you have any Buster puppy we'd love to see some pics. Breeding dogs from a diversity of registered bloodlines - It's better for the dogs - it's better for the breed. While we do respect the achievements of more dog show oriented fellow breeders offering great praise to some of them , and while Blasco dogs have indeed stood in the winner's circle, such beauty contest victories are not our focus. We are professional breed developers, focused exclusively on hybrid, working type American Bulldogs and Bandogge Mastiffs. It is a scientific fact, outcross breeding breeding dogs together of different breeds , promotes vastly superior dog-health across a broad range of metrics. Our goal is to segregate the superior health, structural, performance and protection characteristics of the more ancient dogs, from the modern dog genome. It can be categorically stated, that all Blasco dogs, whether our American Bulldogs or Bandogges, are suitable for stable family companionship, home defense, and personal protection. Our Bandogges also being registered, pedigreed dogs , are the results of outcross breedings between American Bulldogs, South African Boerboels, English Mastiffs, Cane Corsos, Dogue de Bordeaux and other traditional and exotic Mastiff breeds. Sorry if I look a little mean, the sun was in my eyes. Except where otherwise noted, all Blasco dogs can be trained as AKC Canine Good Citizens , while retaining a strong drive towards family protection. Our Bandogges' and American Bulldogs' prey drive is subordinate to their pack drive, motivating protection of the "pack" that's you, your kids and the other animals you've taught the dog to accept. This is a big deal. It is rare that guard dogs and personal protection dogs are also trustworthy family members. Many police dogs and Schutzhund dogs that are "stable" in public on the end of a leash live in professional kennels, not living rooms. Even in hunting American Bulldogs and Bandogges do not typically kill hogs or other large game, much less your cat, chickens, goats or other domestic or livestock animals. They are bred to corral and contain, or to catch and hold a threat; i. Bandogges and other predecessors of American Buldogs were originally developed on medieval European farmyards. With no law enforcement or guns, with ruffians, scoundrels and wild beasts ever present, the Ancient World was dangerous. Children ranged many miles tending flocks, and managing unruly livestock with only their fearsome family farm dogs to protect and assist them. These dogs almost without fail will naturally distinguish between lambs to be protected and predators to be driven off or killed - a distinction clearly not prey driven. Please enjoy the site. It's admittedly long-winded. We use it as a scrap book, for memories, articles and opinion statements wanting you to know who we are, and where your dog comes from. Some basic info follows for your convenience. Please glance through it before emailing. If I'm busy you may wait a few days, but I will answer you. We also do not maintain waiting lists. Such practices attempt to get money from you as fast as possible, preventing you from shopping around. Our typical process is to email Blasco Puppy Announcements to our email contacts as puppies become available. Email me if you require clarifications. Trained adults are only rarely available. Other destinations incur additional costs. We will not ship to any venue with quarantine requirements, or to any country where dog fighting, live animal baiting, or the eating of dogs is not explicitly illegal. We provide standard day in-house evaluation before delivery. There's no cell service at the house and our landline is unreliable. We generally use email, so please don't send me call-back requests. We'll gladly speak by phone to intended buyers before you make a deposit. Just let me know that's your desire and we'll schedule a call. I'm happy to answer questions, and I answer all polite emails. That said, family and dogs keep me busy. I tend to answer emails in bursts every few days, sometimes taking as long as a week. I'm sorry about that. Nonetheless, please do email me by form or directly. Regarding the dogs pictured, some dogs are no longer with us whether having passed on, or been rehomed as adults , and we do own quite a few dogs not pictured on the site as well. Below you'll find the first few photos of our family, and our dogs, to help you get to know both of us better. There's also more pics and useful bits of information in the Dog Profiles and Photos sections. And hey, do you already own a Blasco dog? The first were hunting dogs and the second large herding dogs, who effectively protect sheep and goats. From this description of these herding dogs we quote: The lower jaw is undershot. From it grows two teeth, one on the left, the other on the right, which are only slightly exposed. These dogs have large heads and drooping ears, a strong nape and neck. The tail is thick, the bark sonorous, the jaws large; the color usually is white.I sold several dogs to folks for hog dogs. Judah with his kids. All are over pounds, "kid friendly and mother approved. Kids and American Bulldogs.Daughter Kat and son John with Doc, still a baby at 9-months with a whole lot of growing to do. Look at the peaceful demeanor of this teenage dog, totally trustworthy and gentle with children. All of our dogs develop a similar calm maturity early in life, growing in a calm, loving environment. Treat your dog like a baby bunny for the first months or so, no need to be rough to "raise their aggression. American Bulldog puppies. Our dogs meet human hands and voices at birth. E ach receives extra feedings by bottle from day-one , imprinting them as much on children as on their own mother. That says something about the bond of trust with the mother, and the early socialization these puppies already have when they enter new homes. Abi is special needs and with a unique connection to animals. She called to Mambo when he was less than a week old and still blind. He crawled feet across the floor to her a distant adventure at his age. From that moment on he preferred Abi to his own mother, often refusing to nurse off unless Abi's hand was on him. For the rest of his life, Mambo was inseparable from Abi. Of course, Mambo didn't remain a puppy for long.Mambo grew. Here's John at four hugging Mambo at under a year old. The collar is 24" making his head quite a bit larger. Mambo is over lbs. This profile shot shows Mambo's slightly longer nose. It's an important distinction between straight Johnson or Bully type American Bulldogs and "hybrid type" American Bulldogs. The "hybrid types" still achieve the heavier weights, but gain clear breathing and much better stamina. American Bulldogs like to play.John with Doc at 9-months. At this age, dog, boy and sisters had a blast. The kids would lay on the tile floor holding a leash and Doc would run them around, sliding across the floor. Doc truly loved playing with the kids. Many dogs tolerate kids, but I haven't met a well loved American Bulldog that didn't genuinely enjoy the company of little kids, forming deep and lasting bonds with the children in their families. He can catch a football, crunch up a soup bone or swallow a sock or a toy, so be sure to pick up the laundry and toys! Here the lovely wife Rebecca with Doc having just had his ears and teeth checked. Obviously we use bleach on our counters! Doc is months here, roughly pounds. This breed is not suitable for full-time crating and cages, but do okay in apartments with daily walks. Train them early and they'll be fine. Young Adult Puppies.Mambo, Doc in the rear and Pete on the right, all at or just over lbs. Pete was smallest of the litter and just look at him. He's a pound dog and can leap easily to the roof the roof of my Dodge Durango sitting on 31 inch tires a bit over six feet. Shortest dog in the litter at .Doc is also a regular flying Bulldog, but not the mischief maker Pete is. Pete was our Dennis the Menace, always into stuff, digging holes, pretending he wants to fight, but then when someone turns around snarling, throwing himself dramatically onto his back in surrender, only just teasing them. Pete is just too funny. Doc and Mambo are big fun, but a bit more serious. Not properly socializing these dogs is tantamount to attack training them. Poorly socialized, carelessly trained dogs are a high risk liability LIKELY to bite strangers in an effort to control them by forced herding and attack. To the left, Judah herds me away on Becky's command. We specialize in Bully-type, also sometimes referred to as Johnson American Bulldogs. However on occasion we do produce fantastic standard- and hybrid-type American Bulldogs. We breed for functional and balanced temperament allowing for the American Bulldog to be a family member and a companion while having the drive and intelligence to perform desired functions. At Grand Future, we typically produce large American Bulldogs. Males range in lbs and females range in lbs. We have always bred to a significantly stricter breed standard than the current American Bulldog breed standards under U. Dogs with the following characteristics are not shown at conformation shows nor bred in our kennel: 1. Full black mask — this genetic trait is usually a result of another breed having been infused into the gene pool. Usually a dog with a kinked tail itself is not at risk of health complications as a result of the kinked tail. Teeth — dogs missing more than 3 teeth. Dogs lacking full pigmentation are more susceptible to various health problems. Lack of pigment is also responsible for deafness in dogs. We have never produced a deaf dog. Interested in a puppy? We have many repeat buyers — over 30 families have purchased 2,3,4, and even 5 dogs. Our dogs generally love children and have balanced temperament. Having produced over dogs in 7 generations, we have history and data that allows us to make some conclusions that we believe are significant. The very common problem of hip dysplasia that afflicts this breed is nearly non-existent in our kennel. Our dogs tend to have normal locomotion — good movement due to anatomically sound physical structure. Our dogs have never torn ligaments such as the Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL , which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never prematurely died from heart problems, which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never been diagnosed with tracheal hypoplasia — a hereditary genetic defect common in bulldog breeds that leads to potential deadly obstruction of the airway. Our dogs tend to live long. Our foundation dog lived to the age of 15 years and 10 months old. Our dogs have never been afflicted with cancer at a young age. The earliest instance of cancer has been encountered at 8 years of age by one dog. The remainder of cases have been documented at over 10 years of age. The biggest tragedy for an owner is in having to care for a sick dog as a result of poor breeding, and be absolutely helpless as that dog passes in their arms. Exorbitant medical bills end up being paid to prolong the time together even by just a little with the beloved family member. As with any animal breeding program, our kennel is not immune from problems. This drives us to continually improve. We maintain contact and help our owners in any way we can; even at 4AM or during a vacation since we have owners all over the world in various timezones. Our breeding expertise enables us to deliver healthy, beautiful, strong, and intelligent American Bulldog puppies. We provide a contractual health guarantee against the following genetic health problems — hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL ruptures, cataracts, entropion, ectropion, heart, kidneys, thyroid, ichthyosis, cryptorchidism, epilepsy, and any neurological disorders including NCL. Our conversation with a prospective owner always involves questions to understand the kind of dog the person would like — the more details the better. If so inclined, the prospective owner can request guidance in picking the puppy based on personality and activity level, temperament, phenotype, and more. We evaluate our puppies at 6 weeks of age on a variety of parameters. We provide lifetime unlimited advice and guidance by phone to owners concerning all subjects relating to dog ownership. You can be sure you will have the information you need to succeed even if this is going to be your first American Bulldog puppy. Because we stand by the quality of our work, we want our owners to participate in our breeding program and we are happy to provide the necessary guidance. Our dogs are also ideal candidates for service animal work. Training a service dog requires a significant investment of time and money, making the genetic health and temperament of the dog even more critical. A service dog needs to be healthy, hassle-free, intelligent and receptive to training, have stable temperament to handle any type of environment, and of course lead a long life disease-free. All of these selective requirements for service dog candidates make Grand Future American Bulldogs an ideal fit. Join us in our mission of producing the best American Bulldogs possible! If trained well, a Labrador can even live happily with a cat in the same house. Twice a year, your Labrador Retriever will blow its coat, leading to dog hair everywhere in your house. If you are allergic to dog hair, you might want to think twice before bringing a Labrador Retriever home. However, heavy shedding can be controlled by grooming your pet regularly. The skin of your pet produces natural oils that end up giving a peculiar dog smell. Moreover, the years of a Labrador Retriever give off a yeasty smell. However, if the smell gets too strong, make sure you take your Lab to a vet for a checkup as it may be due to skin or dental infections. The double coat of your Labrador Retriever will block the odor, making them smell more than most breeds. Daily Exercising Needs Labradors are high-energy dogs that have been used by hunters for several years. They need their daily dose of exercise to remain fit and healthy. Once you bring an adorable Labrador Retriever home, take it out on at least two minute walks every day. As the food intake of these dogs is also pretty high, it is important for them to burn their calories to prevent health issues like obesity. While food acts as a key motivator while training a Lab puppy, the motivation may also become too strong when the puppy grows up. Never make the mistake of leaving food open and available to an adult Labrador as it will never know when to stop. Overeating can make your Labrador obese and lead to a host of health complications. Watch what your pet eats and structure its diet to give it a long and healthy life. Prone To Separation Anxiety While Labrador Retrievers love spending time with their owners, their love often turns into separation anxiety if they are left alone for too long. They are not the kind of dogs you tie outside your house. They need human company and love spending time with you. Leaving them alone can make them feel useless and lonely. Always ensure that your Lab puppy has someone to keep it company. They Need Space Labradors often need space to walk around due to their size and energy. You cannot and should not keep your pet confined in a closed space for too long. If you are planning to bring a Lab puppy home, make sure you have enough space for it when it grows up. If you live in a small apartment, make sure you take your Labrador out more often to help it move around freely. They are food-motivated dogs who will never say no to anything that is edible! Always ensure that your Labrador Retriever eats well without going overboard, irrespective of how old it is. It is also important to be mindful of the number of meals you feed your Labrador Retriever. Here is the dietary routine you should follow while feeding your Lab at different stages of its life: Up To 2 Months When your Labrador Retriever is still a puppy, it is advisable to feed it four meals per day. This is the stage where your pet does the most of its growing up. Unlike most other breeds, it is not advisable to free-feed your Labrador at this age. Labradors tend to eat a lot at all ages and you should not give them more food than what is absolutely necessary. Over 6 Months By the time your Labrador turns six months old, you should reduce its food intake to two meals per day. Do not give your Lab unlimited access to food and track what it eats all day. While a few dogs show signs of pain and lameness, others continue living a normal life. Labradors with this condition should not be bred any further. Elbow dysplasia leads to joint laxity and painful lameness. Cataracts Like humans, Labradors are also susceptible to cataracts. While they do not impair vision, they do lead to severe vision loss in dogs. It is not a major issue and your pet will recover from it in a few days. Ear infections This breed of dog office from ear infections because of the breeding ground for microorganisms such as bacteria. Hence, they are always recommended to clean their ears and keep them dry. It starts with your Labrador Retriever getting night-blind and makes it lose daytime vision over time. The health issue manifests itself in your pet by making it tired and stiff as it walks. You may also see your Lab puppy collapse during training or exercise sessions. While there is no treatment to fully cure myopathy in dogs, the best way to tackle is to keep your Labrador warm and at rest. Epilepsy This is another common health issue your Labrador can encounter, leading to mild or severe seizures. The fits can be identified by noticing your pet running around frantically as if it is being chased. If you notice such seizures in your pet, take it to a vet at once. Joint problems Labradors commonly suffer from the disease of joint problems especially at the elbow and at the hip regions. This health issue is also known as elbow or hip dysplasia. The conditions are severe because it starts affecting the joints and stop the normal movement of the body. These health issues are also responsible for inducing pain and prohibition of movement of all the body parts especially the elbow and legs. Obesity and Bloat These two health issues are quite severe for Labrador dogs. Unhealthy eating habits are highly responsible for affecting dogs severely. The stomach gets twisted or becomes swelled when the eating habits are compromised at regular intervals. Hence, feed them regularly with healthy meals. Interesting Facts About Labrador Retrievers Before you welcome the most adorable Lab puppy in the world, here are a few interesting facts that will make you fall in love with the breed even more: Labradors Almost Went Extinct A breed that is extremely popular today was once on the verge of extinction. Poodles never shed their fur which is why they are a good fit for people who suffer from allergies. They come from elite dog breeds, and their origin has been argued for centuries. Yet, since poodles are now a common breed in France, they have since become the national pet. Nonetheless, poodles are now a favorite among families and children. Dogs have always been perfect human companions. So it is still a good idea to keep a poodle. It is also a good idea to distinguish the type of poodles about their characteristics and colors. Characteristics of A Poodle The shoulder height of a standard poodle is usually around inches while its weight would be approximately 20 — 30 kilograms. In the United States, poodles are recognized by three sizes which are the tiny, standard and toy. Poodles are built with elegance which is why they are popular dogs among aristocrats and the elite. The eyes of poodles are usually known to be dark and oval shaped while their fur is dense and curly and does not shed. By nature, poodles are known to be water retrievers. This makes them excellent swimming companions as well because they love being in the water. Types of Poodle colors Poodles are known to be solid colored dogs, and these are actually a popular choice among breeders. They usually come in solid colors like black, white, red, apricot, brown, silver, grey, silver-beige and even some that come with unique spots or marks. Yet, there are also poodles that come with a mix of different colors which are identified as mismark, tuxedo and parti-colored poodles and these are usually special breeds that are now being recognized in dog shows and exhibitions and even canine registries. It is important, however, as a breeder to know and identify these types of dogs and which of these are recognized in significant dog registries. Mismark Poodles These poodles are also known as abstract poodles by a few breeders. A mismark poodle is usually mistaken to be parti-colored or tuxedo poodles because of their similarities. In short, majority of their coat is solid and with slight white patches. It is important for breeders to identify them as mismark and not parti-colored or tuxedo poodles. Tuxedo Poodles These types of poodles usually have special markings in some parts of their body which resembles a tuxedo. If you are breeding these species of dogs, the markings are usually seen to be a white colored belly. The dark colors can be dark blue and white or red and white. Parti-colored Poodles These type of poodles have been known to history to be the original color of poodles. These poodles have a larger area of their body to be covered with a white base coat and the remaining patches of random solid color, and is black, which surrounds their body. Some spots of black color may even appear on their paws and legs. When breeding, it is important to remember that to get a parti-colored poodle; two parti-colored dogs should be paired and mated to get the expected results. It is often a joy for most breeders because of the lovely colored patterns that these poodles possess. Some partis, however, may have small spots which are black as expected. Health Issues in Poodles It is necessary for any dog breeder to be aware of the kinds of health issues that their dogs may encounter. Like any other dogs, poodles have a significant list of health concerns that have since been reported in dog registries. Yes, even poodles are susceptible to these kinds of conditions, so it is best to take good care of your dogs and make sure that their medical records are up to date. This means that regular vet visits should be scheduled and accomplished for the poodle, with complete vaccines and relevant shots. A minor issue that is common to poodles is the ear infection. Poodles can also contract eye problems like cataracts because of the density of their fur around their face and head. Outdoor Activities and Training Since poodles are intelligent creatures, training is not a challenging task for most breeders. They are quick to understand what is expected of them. Poodles are companion dogs, and they usually need a right amount of exercise and outdoor activities. They often need companionship and would usually get rowdy when left alone indoors for a long time. chocolate labrador puppies for sale in southern california - Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. You will never regret your decision. All breeds of Labrador Retrievers are known for being kind and gentle — and this trait runs especially strong with the chocolate-colored sweeties. While these dogs are very friendly to strangers, they have even more affection to give to their beloved families. Your Chocolate Lab puppy or adult will be happiest spending time with their favorite people. If you have young children, a lab is a great fit, as this breed is usually quite tolerant of the horseplay of small children who are still learning how to interact with pets. Just like many people, Chocolate Labs enjoy both downtime — especially if it involves being pampered by their family — and active high-energy fun. We recommend daily exercise, which can include anything from fetch, to tag, or even frisbee games. The average Chocolate Lab lifespan is between 9 and 11 years. The most common Chocolate Lab health problem is hip dysplasia, which occurs more commonly in older and overweight dogs. This is just one of the reasons to make exercise a common part of your time with a Chocolate Lab puppy or fully grown adult. Another problem that occurs in overweight labs is joint and movement issues. The other most common Chocolate Lab health problems are: Progressive Retinal Atrophy Cataracts Elbow Dysplasia As is the case with any dog, when you bring home a Chocolate Labrador, make sure that you have a good vet to handle routing vaccinations and check-ups as well as emergency health problems. Learn more about the Keystone Puppies Health Guarantee! Chocolate Lab Coat Care In general, Chocolate Lab coat care is easy compared to many other dog breeds which require weekly or daily work. Labrador Retrievers all have double coats, which includes an under layer of short hairs and a slightly longer top layer. This coat is useful for repelling water and keeping them cool in warmer temperatures — and warm in cooler ones. Their coat is also noted to be slightly dry and oily. Chocolate Lab coat care is fairly minimal and considered low maintenance. The coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 — 3 times per month to minimize shedding. In addition to that, baths are needed fairly infrequently. What is more crucial is ensuring that their toenails are well cared for throughout the year. Meet Chocolate Lab Puppies for Sale. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued.
