You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. Most of them have little need for personal space. My clients most commonly describe their bernedoodles as happy, goofy, smart, charming, curious, friendly, social, enthusiastic, cuddly, and loving. Despite my efforts to breed only the best purebreds, some offspring may inherit stubbornness or sensitivity from the Bernese. Their training requires patience, a light touch, and positive reinforcement. Further, from the poodle they can inherit an extremely high level of energy. In general, the bernedoodle is an intelligent, social, fun crossbreed with character and charisma. On the whole, bernedoodles tend to be quite similar to goldendoodles in nature, with the most notable difference being that the bernedoodle can be headstrong. This is more pronounced at the puppy stage, and tends to disappear when the bernedoodle is older and trained. Every dog has a different personality, but the two breeds have much in common, and those traits make them excellent family pets. Appearance Bernedoodles are usually pure black, black and white, black and brown, or tri-colour black, white and brown , but I have seen other colours. Their overall appearance combines elements of the Bernese and the poodle. Beyond colour, well-chosen parents tend to blend the traits of the poodle and the Berner in a fairly consistent way. In short, bernedoodles tend to look like shaggy teddy bears! Many clients want a tri-color bernedoodle, with markings as similar as possible to those of the Bernese mountain dog. That look is challenging to achieve, and people may have a long wait for it. Personally, I love bernedoodles of all colours. Temperament is far more important to me than colour and colours can fade. Coat Every bernedoodle has a different coat. The majority have a wavy coat that sheds minimally, if at all. Most people with allergies to dog dander i. However, the straighter the coat, the more it sheds, and the less suitable the dog will be for people with allergies. Bernedoodles with a curly coat are similar to the poodle and will not shed. While there are no guarantees, even if you have serious allergies to dander, you should do well with a curly-coated bernedoodle. Breeders can often tell by the time a dog is a few weeks old what type of coat it will have, and can help match you to the best coat type for your situation. If you are allergic to dog saliva, and your skin breaks out in hives when licked by a dog, you will most likely be allergic to all bernedoodles regardless of coat type. Since there are no absolute guarantees with coat type, responsible breeders will give you some time to see if you are allergic to your puppy and will allow you to return the pup if it is not working out. Since most bernedoodles shed little, if at all, they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting, and must be clipped every few months. Sizes Bernedoodles come in different sizes, depending on the parents and the vagaries of genetics. Females are usually smaller than males. A Standard Bernedoodle results from crossing a standard poodle with a Bernese mountain dog. They will generally be 50 lbs and up, and around 23 to 29 inches at the shoulder. Most standards are in the 70 to 90 lbs range. A mini bernedoodle results from crossing a miniature poodle with a Bernese mountain dog. They generally range from 25 to 49 lbs, and are 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder. A tiny bernedoodle results from crossing a toy poodle with a mini bernedoodle. They range from 10 to 24 lbs, and are about 12 to 17 inches at the shoulder. These ranges capture the averages, but sometimes a pup will fall outside the expected height and weight. In terms of temperament, mini and tiny bernedoodles may have a slightly higher energy level than the standard, to reflect the same in the miniature and toy poodle parents. However, using calm poodles, regardless of size, tends to produce docile bernedoodles. Different Generations F1 is a first generation cross in which the pup is 50 percent Bernese mountain dog and 50 percent poodle. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. F1b is a backcross in which a bernedoodle is bred with a poodle. The puppy is 25 percent Bernese, and 75 percent poodle. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. Some breeders have backcrossed a bernedoodle with a Bernese, which results in a dog with more of the Bernese traits. I prefer not to breed this backcross as there is a greater likelihood of shedding. F2 is a second-generation cross in which an F1 bernedoodle is crossed with another F1 bernedoodle. If this is done for seven generations, a breeder could apply to register this dog as a purebred. The closer the generations come together, the more consistency there will be in the lines, but the genetic problems of the purebreds are more likely too reappear, and hybrid vigor diminishes. Some F2 pups may have an improper coat instead of the fleecy softness we love in the doodles. While bernedoodles vary in appearance and coat type, an experienced breeder will be able to give you an idea of what the pup will look like as an adult, based on what the parents have produced in the past and what traits they see in the pup. Health and Lifespan As a breed, the bernedoodle is still young, so there is limited information about longevity and health concerns. Of the hundreds of bernedoodles I have bred in the past decade, only few owners have reported a genetic health concern. Therefore, I am confident that hybrid vigor is indeed creating a healthier dog that will be with you for a long time. At this point, I can only estimate an average lifespan: I predict standard bernedoodles will live years, mini bernedoodles up to 17 years, and tiny bernedoodles up to 18 years. Usually, the smaller the dog, the longer it lives. While bernedoodles tend to be healthier than their parent breeds, they can still be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye problems. Skin problems, such as hot spots and allergies, are also seen in this mix. Like any other breed of dog, they may get cancer. Genetic testing can reduce the risk of many diseases. A reputable breeder will perform a number of tests and provide evidence of the successful results. This investment is usually reflected in the higher cost of the puppy for the buyer. A higher upfront cost will most likely reduce vet bills down the road. Bernedoodle Mismatch I believe the bernedoodle is a suitable dog for most people, with a few caveats: This is a very social dog that thrives on plenty of human interaction; if you have limited time for a dog, this may not be the breed for you. A low- to non-shedding coat means more time, effort, and money spent on grooming. If your bernedoodle should happen to inherit the higher energy of the poodle or the stubbornness of the Bernese — or both! This is caused either because the canines come in a bit crooked or the lower jaw is a bit narrows and as the puppies continue to grow and develop that self corrects. In recent years, owners have been more drawn to mixed breeds thanks to rescues becoming more popular, and the health benefits of breed variety in a dog. Many mixed breeds are becoming standard, such as the Goldendoodle, Bernadoodle, etc. What is a Pugweiler? A Pugweiler is a puppy of a Pug and a Rottweiler. It does not matter which parent is which, but combining the two creates a miniature version of a Rottweiler in coloring, with a pug face usually. History of the Pug Pugs are an ancient breed, with roots dating back to B. They were bred as companions for the wealthy. The Pug was recognized by the AKC as a breed early on in .The Pug is classified as a companion dog, which is exactly what they do best. They have an easy going temperament, thrive for companionship, are affectionate and playful, and love to be the center of attention. History of the Rottweiler Rottweilers are commonly believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds. The Roman Empire is believed to have created the breed when they needed a strong dog to move and guard their herds all across Europe. Using Asian Mastiff type dogs, they are believed to have bred the first distant relative of the Rottweiler, leaving them behind in Germany when they abandoned the area. The formal history of the breed dates back to , when the first standard Rottweiler was bred by the International Club for Leonbergers and Rottweiler Dogs in Germany. Breeding a small breed and large breed can be dangerous, and combining the two different personalities could create behavioral and health issues. Dogs of the Pug Rottweiler mix can take after either parent breeds in any aspect, making them inherently hard to predict. However from photos we have found online, most pugweilers seem to take the face and body of the pug and the coat of the rottweiler. Advantages of crossbred dogs We mentioned early that mixed breed dogs are becoming more popular, and with good reason. Not only is rescue becoming more popular, but mixed dogs are oftentimes healthier than purebred dogs. To put it simply, mixed breed dogs take the best and worst things from their mixes, creating a lower chance of the negative things affecting them. Purebreds, on the other hand, take the good and bad of the one breed, which means the bad can affect them more, as it is not offset by other good. A study found that purebred dogs have a significantly greater risk of developing many of the hereditary disorders in their bloodline. This does not mean all mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebreds, or that purebreds are unhealthy. With proper genetic testing and breeding, purebred dogs can be extremely healthy, and mixed breed dogs can have many health conditions as well. Pugweiler health conditions While mixing up the gene pool can help lower the risk of some ailments or diseases, health problems still naturally occur in both breeds. Pugs are notoriously one of the least healthy dog breeds out there. Pugs are prone to and commonly known to suffer from: Skin conditions Wrinkles are a breeding ground for bacteria and require routine cleaning Allergies Pugs are very prone to skin allergies which cause itching Respiratory issues such as Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome, which obstructs airflow in the airways, usually brought on by heat or exercise Seizures Bone and joint problems Many issues can occur here, including slipped discs, hip dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and more Eye issues Such as bulging eyes, entropion, blindness, glaucoma, etc. Rottweilers are a fairly healthy breed, but also have their own ailments. They live around years, which is average for a large dog. Rottweilers are known to suffer from: Hip Dysplasia due to their large size Arthritis Eye issues progressive retinal atrophy PRA ,cataracts, eyelid deformities, etc. Entropion Heart problems Fairly high rate of cancer Combining the breeds can result in any of the following issues from either breed. Most notable, eye issues and bone and joint issues occur in both, making them likely to occur in a crossbreed of the two. Because of this, the two are both suitable to be house pets. Pugs are content to be lazy and lounge around on the couch. They even make great apartment pets, though they can be a bit noisy. Rottweilers are a bit more of a protective dog at first, but with proper introductions, can do well with just about anyone. They may not do well around small pets or children, and require a bit too much exercise to be kept in an apartment. Combining the two creates a dog who will likely need exercise, but not too much that it may cause a health issue, should live in a house, and be slowly introduced to small animals, other pets, children, people, etc. This all depends on the genetic makeup of your Pugweiler, and the dog itself, of course. Grooming a Pugweiler Pugweilers will require frequent grooming, as both breeds are very prone to shedding. Because of this, you will want to monitor how much time they spend outside in humid or wet conditions. How to Get a Pugweiler Pugweilers are not a commonly bred mix for a number of reasons, including health issues and the unlikely pairing, but it is still possible to find them, though not often from reputable breeders.
