There are a number of things that can cause a dog to be reactive to seeing other dogs; territoriality, insecurity or fear, aggression and excitement. My initial goal for the session was to determine which one of these factors was influencing pepper. I sat down with peppers guardian to discuss the situation as well as her day-to-day routine. This means the dog thinks it is in a leadership position and is often related to why the dog doesnt listen when corrected by their guardian. Enforcing these rules and boundaries in a timely fashion is how we can communicate to the dog what is and is not allowed. Additionally reinforcement of these rules is a great way to start redefining the leader follower dynamic between human and dog. After suggesting a few rules and boundaries I went over some nonverbal communication methods for peppers guardian to start using. However to a dog, this yelling is interpreted as the human agreeing with whatever the dog is barking at. But by using nonverbal forms of communication that mimic what dogs do amongst each other, we are able to help the dog understand that we disagree with the barking. Next I ran through a leadership exercise that I like to use. This exercise involves the dog leaving a high-value treat alone that is laying in the middle of the floor. By giving the dog as much access as possible and asking it to restrain itself, we can help the dog learn to develop the ability to self-restrain. We started out in the kitchen and I was able to run through the exercise a few times successfully. Instead of responding the same way that she did with me upstairs, Pepper attempted to circle and or go around her guardian to get the treat. As soon as the dog communicated this, I had peppers guardian give the dog permission to take the treat. We ran through the exercise a few more times to make sure that both Pepper and her guardian were using the right technique and understood how the exercise was conducted. To test this new skill set, Peppers guardian called her next-door neighbor and asked her to come and knock on the door to trigger the response the dog usually displays whenever anyone arrives. Often when a dog barks and rushes the door, the human feels embarrassed and rushes to the door themselves. The dog usually interprets this rush as the human is nervous therefore it is right to bark at the intruder. In either case, the dog has the wrong idea. As soon as the neighbor started knocking, I got up and walked in a normal pace to answer the door. Once I was at the door I turned around to face the dog, then started marching directly at it. This surprised Pepper and caused her to back away from the door. As soon as Pepper crossed the threshold from the tile in the entryway to the carpet in the living room, I stopped moving forward. By stopping precisely when the dog crossed the threshold I wanted it to stay behind, I was able to communicate to Pepper what I wanted in a way she understood. Once Pepper was behind the boundary, I started walking backwards towards the door while keeping my front facing the dog. As soon as I got to the door, I reached to the side with my hand and started to jiggle both the deadbolt and the doorknob. Each time Pepper heard a new sound, it triggered a response from her and she started to move forward. To communicate that I disagreed with this movement, I took a sudden and deliberate step directly at Pepper each time she crossed the boundary. It took three or four corrections before Pepper sat down behind the boundary and waited for me to open the door. By waiting for the dog to stay behind the boundary, Pepper was better able to restrain herself and keep her energy level at a reasonable level. This distance allowed me to open the door and greet the neighbor without Pepper rushing or jumping up on her. This time Pepper did not bark when she heard the knocking, but instead rushed to the doorway ahead of us. She used the same movement that I did to get Pepper to back away and move behind the boundary. Each time she jiggled the handle or deadbolt Pepper started to move forward, so she disagreed with the dog by moving towards it the same way I did. It took a minute or two before Pepper got it and sat down behind the boundary to the door. In time, Pepper will learn to sit and wait for her guardian to handle answering the door and wait behind the boundary until the guest passes it before engaging with them. Sprints German Shepherds are incredibly athletic dogs, with a lot of energy. They were originally bred as working dogs, and have a history of herding. This means that sprinting exercises are excellent for them, as well as being a lot of fun and very mentally engaging. Sprinting can significantly enhance their cardio fitness, as well as help build muscle and strength. It is also a great way for them to use up their energy, and it is highly mentally stimulating for them, especially if the sprinting is turned into a game. The best way to perform this exercise is by using a tennis ball launcher or similar. Something that will throw an object far away at a very high speed, for your dog to chase. In order to catch it, your dog will have to sprint really fast. The best surface to do this on is grass, or any other surface with good traction so that your dog does not slip and fall! Exercise Routine: You should perform this exercise around three to four times a week, allowing for breaks and rests in between sets of sprints. You should avoid doing it during hot or humid days. Make sure your dog gets plenty of water afterward! They are also highly intelligent and love completing exercises and training, as they were originally bred for working. Weave poles can be really fun for your dog, and they will significantly enhance both speed and agility. They are also great for teaching focus, and for getting your dog to follow your lead instantly. There are plenty of weave poles available in the market, and you can easily set some up in your garden, or take some with you to the park. The grass is the most ideal surface for this exercise. To perform this exercise, follow these steps: Set up the weave poles in your garden, yard, or similar. You can adjust the difficulty, starting off with wider spaces between the poles for the easiest level. Use treats to lure and guide your dog from one end of the poles to the other, by walking in zig-zag between them. Insert a command word, so that your dog knows it has to go through the weave poles, to the end, in order to get a treat. Slowly increase the speed. Eventually, you can stand at the other end, give the command, and your dog will perform the exercise. Start timing your dog and upping the difficulty. Reward always at the end, once your dog has made it through the weave pole. If your German Shepherd ends up being really good at this exercise, you could maybe even end up in an agility competition, who knows! Instead, you can wait until your GSD bites during a positive activity before stopping it. This will help to anchor the result better. For example, if your German Shepherd puppy fiercely takes a treat from your hand, you can withhold the second treat until he learns to take it gently. You should act upset and convey that what he has done has hurt you. Use positive reinforcement to encourage proper behavior by rewarding with a treat. Your German Shepherd will quickly learn that good behavior is rewarded with good things. Alternatively, you might spend the ninth month teaching him a fun party trick! Teach Your German Shepherd to Spin By dangling a tasty treat in front of your German Shepherd and moving it in a circle until he starts to spin, you prime him for a command anchor. After a week or so, you teach your German Shepherd to follow your finger without first using a treat. Of course, you will still need to reward him after he obeys the command. By the third week, you should be able to ask your dog to spin without using your finger to guide him. It might take an extra couple of weeks, but I recommend this as an addition in the ninth month because it allows you to continue training your dog to learn previous commands better. You can train him to go to different places, hold or release objects, and fetch toys. You can now develop this further and teach him to roll over on command. Your one-year-old German Shepherd continues to learn at the same rate as he has since he was six months old. What will change is that your dog will interact with other people more frequently. You can train him to do additional tricks to give him a more appealing presence. This will deter him from merely barking for attention. You should also review previously taught commands and see any weak associations you can reinforce. If anything, this is the period where you tailor his training to your convenience. But now is the time when your German Shepherd must learn to be harmonious with your life. From the month mark onwards, you must train your doggo to be compatible with modern adult life within reason. Picking up the puppy The journey with your new retriever pup starts the day you pick him or her up from the breeder. Hopefully you have done your homework and selected a litter of puppies with parents who have proven trainability. If you have a pick from the litter, you will want to take some time to observe the puppies. Even so, most trainers will tell you that picking a puppy is a complete crapshoot, meaning there really is no way to know how good the dog will be while looking at them as a puppy. Genetics and a proven pedigree are the best way to stack the odds in your favor from the start. Beyond that, if you have a good breeder, they are the next best source for information regarding the pups. A good breeder will give you a recommendation based on what you plan to use the pup for and your family situation. While you can put a puppy in a crate to transport them home, leaving the litter is a traumatic time for most puppies. Being held on the way home is a good way to start bonding with the puppy. Use this time to hold, pet and play with your new puppy. Bonding with the puppy is important and this is a good time to do that. Socialization is key for retriever gun dog puppies While socialization is important for all dogs, it is essential for retriever puppies destined to hunt. Socialization is the act of putting your retriever puppy in new situations and allowing the puppy to figure it out. Your puppy may handle new situations well, or she might show timid or frightened behaviors. This is not the time to coddle your future gun dog. Dogs are very aware of their owners and if you act or acknowledge your puppies fear, they will likely think you are scared too. This is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve with socialization. We want puppies to learn to adjust quickly to new situations. We want them to learn how to figure out new conditions and handle them without fear or hesitation. Puppies need to be socialized to people also. Let your puppy interact with people of all ages, including children. In addition, it can be helpful if they are also socialized to other dogs and cats. And yet we see too many retrievers with little to no retrieving desire. Sometimes this is just the result of bad breeding, but it can also be the result of poor introduction to retrieving or using the wrong items for retrieving. Many people like to play fetch with their puppy using a ball or Frisbee. But if your puppy is destined to be a hunting partner, this is going to make some retrieving problems down the line. We may use a ball to encourage a very young week old puppy to retrieve, IF, and only IF, the puppy is struggling with retrieving desire. Otherwise, we strongly discourage ongoing use of these items. Gun dogs and duck dogs are working dogs and they need to retrieve birds that fall to the ground. The rolling action of the ball or frisbee will create an excitement and energy that will make retrieving birds seem boring. We have found that dogs that have only retrieved balls or Frisbee often struggle when they need to retrieve a bumper or bird. Expose your Labrador puppy to common hunting elements A retriever that is going to be expected to hunt, should be introduced to hunting equipment and elements at an early age. Hills and mounds, flat areas and shallow divots are terrain that a hunting retriever should learn to traverse with ease. In addition to land, different water is also an important factor. Lakes are good, but you should also try to expose your puppy to dirty water. Water with lily pads, cat tails and algae are all things a duck dog will need to handle to work. Hunting equipment Labrador retriever puppies need to learn all about the equipment you use when hunting. Doing this when they are young and continuing the exposure as they grow, will make this second nature to them. Boats and blinds If you hunt out of a boat or blind, introduce your puppy to it. For boats, start on land. Get your puppy comfortable getting in and out of the boat. Throw retrieves from the boat. Similarly, introduce your dog to the blind as a good thing. If you are using a dog blind or hut, make sure your spend lots of time getting your pup comfortable going into and out of it. Make it a fun place to go to get retrieves. Duck or goose decoys If you will use decoys when hunting, take time to expose your puppy to them. Many times over the next few months, put some out on your lawn and let your puppy learn what they are. Eventually, move them to water and again allow your pup to explore them. Throw retrieves through them and teach the dog that he can ignore the decoys. Guns This is one of the most important things that you need to exposure your new puppy to. And it really needs to be done right. The last thing you want to do is create a gun-shy dog. That is very difficult to fix and the dog may never be able to hunt if the damage is too deep. Basic obedience for your gun dog puppy Your puppy is ready to learn obedience early on, and you will find that if you start when they are only a couple months old, they will learn quicker and be more obedient as they age. This will make a huge difference as they get older. Teaching HERE to young pups will require a long lead. Squat down a few feet from your puppy and say HERE as you gently pull them to you. Praise is essential with young pups, but the praise should be given when the puppy does something right. For instance, you say SIT and push his bottom down. You can use treats to teach your puppy obedience and reward him or her for obeying commands. But treats should only be used for very young puppies under 4 months. Many Labs will soon learn to only obey when given a treat, that is not the lesson you want your dog to learn. It can be difficult to discipline a cute little puppy, but it is essential. The West German type German Shepherd dog is the most sought after type. This is the number one variety of German Shepherd dog that previous GSD owners, consumers, enthusiast and new first time owners are actively seeking. You might assume that the cheap dogs are not as healthy or desirable, and the more expensive ones are a better, safer choice. Breeders know this. Many breeders will put a higher price on their low quality dog to look professional and make their dogs appear more valuable. Some breeders import very expensive dogs so they can breed them to sell puppies at a higher price bracket. The torso should appear rugged with powerful legs, the angulation should be correct and the stance when viewed from the side should look as if the German Shepherd were ready or capable of striking in a nanosecond. The West German Shepherd is a herding type breed and should weigh between 70 to 90 lbs and be 22 to 26 inches tall.
