Armed with this knowledge, you can stop by the powder room on the way to the meeting, feeling confident that all is well. Obviously, there will be times when you need to take him out before the scheduled moment arrives, especially in the beginning, but when he can rely on you to take him out to go potty at certain times or after specific events, he will begin working at holding it until the appointed time. For example, always take your puppy out first thing in the morning, not after coffee, and not after checking your email or chatting with your friends on Facebook. Take him out first thing. The secret that all great dog trainers have figured out is how to ignite that love of learning that dogs carry deep inside. Get ready to open up a whole new world of possibilities. From the outside, enlightened training looks like any other training in the beginning. Your puppy has to learn the concept first. You start with very simple steps and build from there. Get a handful of healthy treats that your puppy loves. In a quiet area with minimal distractions, approach your puppy and call his name. Do this five times in a row, several times a day for two days. If your puppy is a genius, and if he is a German Shepherd the chances are high that he is, do the exercise anyway several times per day as described. Eventually, you can transition from using treats to simply praising him when he gets it right, but for now, use treats. To clarify one point, your puppy is not born speaking English. You can use whatever word you choose to let him know when he has done what you are asking him to do. This is the marker you will use throughout his lifetime to let him know when he has performed on cue correctly. Be consistent. You do this initially by luring his eyes to your eyes with your hand that is holding the treats. Call his name, bring your treat hand up to your face, and the instant your puppy makes the slightest eye contact, reward him. Do this several times, then move your hand a few inches away from your face. Call his name, and when he looks at your hand for a treat, do not give it to him. He will become confused, and at some point, he will look you in the eye for clarification. Instantly reward him. Practice this several times a day for a few days, gradually moving your hand away from your face until eventually, it is in a normal relaxed position by your side while your puppy looks at your face when you call him. When you have mastered this exercise, you are ready to move on. First, you will lure him into position like you did when you brought his eyes to your face, then you will transition to having him sit when no treat is offered. With your puppy standing next to you, call his name. Praise him when he looks at you, but do not give him a treat. Instead, place your hand holding the treat in front of his nose and lift your hand directly over his head. Do not pull his head up with his leash, and definitely do not push his butt down to force him to sit. Let him work this out on his own. Step away, call him to you, and repeat. Faster than you expect, he will drop his butt to the floor on cue and proudly accept his reward. As soon as your puppy will reliably sit when you give him the cue and lift your hand over his head, give him the cue but keep your hand at his side. Wait for him to work it out. If he gets frustrated and loses interest, show him the treat and try again. Eventually, he will sit without needing you to guide him, at which point you will lavishly praise him and move on to the next lesson. Do not push him down, do not pull his front legs out from under him. Wait for him to lie down on his own. If he stands up to get the treat, have him sit again and start over. Eventually, he will lower his front end to the floor. Instantly praise him and give him the treat. Once your puppy will lie down consistently when you cue him and lure him with the treat, give him the cue and wait for him to lie down without showing him the treat. You may have to go back to luring him a time or two, but because you taught him how to learn on his own, eventually he will get it. The division is not as pronounced as with some breeds but it is worth mentioning. If you are looking to work or compete with your dog you will need to make sure that their lines are right. Show bred Golden Retrievers tend to be broader and have paler, thicker coats. Working bred Golden Retrievers have a slighter, more pointed skull, rangier legs and a darker, thinner coat. Their general appearance though is similar, and their temperaments again do not differ to a great degree. You will probably find a show bred dog slightly less serious and a little less mature. And a working bred dog might look a little less like the postcard Goldie. Golden Retriever Appearance Golden Retrievers are large, powerful dogs with long fur and an athletic build. They are strong and bred to be hard working and very loyal to their owners. Coat type and color can vary quite widely. And while short haired goldens do exist, most have longer hair and are inclined to be quite fluffy. With a fairly high maintenance coat, made up of long wavy fur with a dense water resistant under coat. The texture of the fur can range from very wavy to almost flat, and shaded from lightest cream to dark gold. Working bred Golden Retrievers tend to be of the darker variety, verging on reddish shades at their darkest. Show bred puppies are often a very pale cream or a lighter golden shade. They may also have a few white furs in places. Any dog in the breed can have a white chest to a smaller or greater degree. However this is considered a fault by the American Kennel Club. Around 22 inches tall and weighing anywhere between 55 and 75lb. Those pups from working lines will likely be at the lighter end of this spectrum. And those from show lines at the heavier end, with a considerable amount of crossover in the middle. Females will also be lighter than males in general. Adding to their distinctive expressive faces. Their ears are floppy and well furred, but should still be able to move. Pure bred Goldens have balanced bodies, with a straight back and legs in proportion to their backs. Their muzzles are pronounced, with wide powerful jaws and a black nose. With this traditionally wolf-like physical shape your Golden Retriever puppy should grow into a fit and active dog. One who exercises with ease and has the potential to gracefully run, jump and swim. They are cheerful, biddable, intelligent and devoted companions. Not only adoring to their families, but generally very happy to greet friends and strangers into the house with open arms. Socialising your puppy is still important to keep him feeling confident when meeting new people and going to new places. He should have a fairly positive natural disposition to everyone he meets. Coming up to greet you with a wagging tail when you arrive. They are normally good with children. However younger Goldies may accidentally knock them by bouncing up, or as a result of their enthusiastically wagging tail. It is sensible to keep any large dog supervised when little children are around due to the unpredictable nature of their interactions. And to protect them both from accidentally upsetting the other. Have a good dog crate and an area of the house where the dog can retreat to when necessary. This will help them to keep a healthy relationship. The Golden Retriever is also clever and easy to train. Are Golden Retrievers Smart? Golden Retrievers are intelligent dogs. They have been put to a lot of important roles in society. From guide dogs to drug dogs, search and rescue to bomb detection. They also do very well in agility and obedience competitions. And excel when trained using modern positive reinforcement methodologies due to their eagerness to please and love of treats! Golden Retriever Training It is worth mentioning that although Golden Retrievers are relatively easy to train, they are very big and strong dogs. This means that training is not really a choice. Unless you want to spend the next few years picking up knocked over guests. Or being dragged around at the end of a leash on walks. As your puppy is likely to love people and other dogs. As well as going for a walk, you will need to teach him the right way to behave. This applies when on and off the leash, in order to make sure your time spent together outdoors is fun rather than stressful. Teaching your puppy to walk to heel will make life with your friendly Golden Retriever much more fun. Golden Retriever Exercise Golden Retrievers are athletic, intelligent dogs. They therefore need plenty of physical and mental stimulation in order to be happy and settled at home. Your time spent dog training can account for a large chunk of these requirements however, with activities. Obedience training, retrieving and advanced agility are fun ways to get you both together and burning off some excess energy. Are They Noisy? Although they may well be vocal when someone knocks on the door, this will usually be down to excitement rather than nerves or aggression. Golden Retrievers are not naturally terribly vocal. Raise your puppy not to bark at guests by making sure that you ignore noise from a young age. Golden Retriever Grooming If you are looking for a dog with a low maintenance coat, then a Golden Retriever is not the right breed for you. They are profusely shedding dogs. Ones who need daily grooming and even then will leave your house and clothes with a light layer of fur. When you bring your puppy home you will quickly need to get them used to being brushed. Daily grooming can be a nice bonding activity between you and your dog. Make sure it is a familiar and pleasurable experience to him from a young age and you will find this much easier to keep on top of as he grows. A good quality dog brush and an excellent dog hair approved vacuum cleaner are essential items for the Golden Retriever owner. The fur surrounding them can catch dirt and make ear infections more likely. Regular ear cleaning and keeping the fur close to the inner ear cut short will all help to reduce the chances of ear infections. Potential For Poor Health The breed are generally robust and healthy dogs. However, there are some serious concerns that you need to be aware of before you go searching for your puppy. Like most pedigree dog breeds, the closed gene pool has led to a prevalence of some inherited diseases which are established in the gene pool. Some of these you will find in many large breed pedigree dogs, and they include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and PRA blindness. When you look for your Golden Retriever breeder, ensure that the mother and father are both PRA clear. And that their hip and elbow scores are better than the breed average. Cancer in Golden Retrievers There is some serious evidence to suggest that cancer is a real problem in Golden Retrievers. The best way to find a puppy with a lower chance of suffering from cancer is to get one with older parents who are cancer free. Preferably from lines of dogs who lived to a higher than average age without suffering themselves. In terms of reducing the risk of cancer, the older the stud dog the better! However, if they manage to avoid the common problems with cancer, they can live significantly longer than this estimate. Golden Retriever Puppies Good Golden Retriever breeders will health test both parents, and only breed from dogs with excellent hips, elbows and eyes. As well as temperaments! They will make an effort to socialize the puppies when they are still with them, feed them a high quality food and make sure they spend lots of time around the human members of the family. The mother will have a strong bond with their owner, and a purpose beyond producing puppies! Either as a working, show or companion dog. Prices may vary according to how titled the parents are either in the show ring or as hunting dogs And prices may be higher in some regions than others. Golden Retrievers are large and hairy dogs. They need plenty of space inside and outside. Their feathery tails have a habit of knocking items off furniture and occasionally small children off their feet. However, if you want an all-round gentle natured, fun, exuberant member of the family then a Golden Retriever is a great choice. Who will happily accompany you wherever you get, get along with whoever they meet and provide you with a great deal of love in the process.

The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. It's not rocket science, but there are tips that make application faster and easier for you and your dog. The crusty stuff is actually skin and hurts your dog if you pick it off, just like us pulling a scab off a skinned knee too soon. If you stop using Nose Butter, the dryness and crust will probably come back. When our hands are really cracked and dry we can use lotion to get them in shape, but we can't slather lotion on our hands once and be moisturized for life. Like cutting your dog's toenails.Nose Butter is part of their health care regimen. That stung! It's not that your dog dislikes Nose Butter we hope not , they DO dislike being held tightly and restrained. Bully and flat-faced breeds already have compromised breathing systems due to their adorable flat faces. If held tightly they will struggle to protect their breathing. Toy breeds know they are small and will often put up an unbelievable tussle to get away. Dogs are often triggered by being held tightly or controlled. This may come from puppy play, when they wrestle and play-fight. It's not fun for dogs or us to have siblings pile on and make us feel helpless. I'm looking at my three sisters. If a Labrador has an undesirable trait, their offspring likely will, too. There are several non-negotiable evaluations that take place before considering a dog for our program, such as sound hips and elbows, a clear eye test, size within the breed standard, a proven pedigree, etc. Once we have checked all of those boxes, we look at the overall personality of the dog. I have never had a problem with him destroying anything in our house, but will bring you anything wood related outside weather it is a stick, log, or a wood ladder. Hunting: Training Abe to retrieve birds consisted of 15 minutes a couple times a week. His drive to keep working in a pattern to find the bird was all him. For September dove season, I decided to take Abe 7months old hunting with a group to see how he would do. Duck season 9months old was much the same, once he got a smell of a duck, Abe was on it and retrieved 36 ducks. He again worked good with other dogs and again performed blind retrieves on ducks that sailed further than expected. Abe is typically by my side when hanging around the house, but definitely knows when I am loading up the truck to hunt, and then he will not leave the truck. Family Member: Every day I can count on Abe playing with my kids. I can also count on either seeing them laying on Abe or Abe laying on them. You can tell Simpsons love each pup that is born. I have zero prior bird training experience, but SLR gives them a huge jump start by getting them out swimming, helping to break them of being gun shy and retrieving live birds all before 8 weeks old. Reed has a drive to retrieve and is showing all signs that he will be a great bird dog, we are very excited for this to be his first year to hunt. He has a great temperament which is not unusual for a Lab of course, but he is pretty laid back for a pup. Reed is a loveable, sweet boy who enjoys cuddling almost as much as he likes retrieving. In addition to his drive and great temperament, he is a beautiful dog. I have and will continue to recommend them to friends and family! He is healthy, friendly, playful and well behaved. He trains easily. The whole process was a good experience. We were communicated with on a regular basis. We visited Jaxx just for a meet and greet. While looking at the pups, we decided that one of them were the cutest puppies we had ever seen. From day one, he learned very quickly. Labrador puppy scammers have even worked their way into the pet space. Sadly, criminals have been creating realistic websits claiming to sell Labrador puppies however all images and videos have been stolen online. The puppy is not in the scammers possession. Tips for Avoiding Online Labrador puppy Scams Ask for multiple pictures of the pet, including poses with specific items a recent newspaper, a tennis ball, etc. Ask for a phone number for the person selling the puppy and a veterinary clinic the pet has been to. If they do give the phone numbers, call and ask questions. If the seller says they are in a particular state but asks you to send money elsewhere, especially another country, avoid it. If the person is claiming to be a breeder, ask for breeder registration information. Never pay in cash via Zelle, Cashapp, money order or Western Union.
