Unlike other compact breeds, Labradors are not the best choice for pets if you live in a studio apartment. Make sure you have enough space in your house for your Labrador to breathe and move around throughout the day. The Need For Daily Exercise Labradors are highly energetic dogs and require a good amount of exercise on a daily basis. They need at least two hours of physical activity every day to keep themselves fit and healthy. Before you bring home a Lab puppy, make sure that you have time for their daily exercise routine. If you skip these sessions, your pet is likely to get obese, irritable, and unhealthy. Heavy Shedding If you or anyone in your family is allergic to dog hair, bringing home a Labrador may not always be the best choice. Labrador Retrievers are moderate to heavy shedders who blow their coats twice a year. With a Lab puppy at home, you are bound to see dog hair on your couch, carpet, bed — practically everywhere. However, regular grooming sessions help you deal with excessive shedding. Slow In Growing Up It is common for Labradors to retain their youthful tendencies for a fairly long period of time. This means that you may have to deal with chewing problems and separation anxiety until they are at least fours years old. We can proudly boast that all of our dogs and puppies come from only the very best and proven bloodlines in the world. Each one of our males and females is health tested, titled, and has at least one parent that has earned a VA1 title Excellent Select, 1st place. The competition for VA is fierce and very few dogs attain this momentous achievement. Our Dogs Titles: So, what does all of this mean and why should it matter to a pet buyer? Working titles focus on the structural soundness and ability to demonstrate trainability and reliability in obedience, but more importantly, temperament is evaluated. Show titles provide a valuable tool for ensuring that the breed standard is followed. This is an in-depth evaluation that records the qualities and shortcomings of the dog. The temperament, conformation, courage, and function are reported. Temperament and character, along with physical and mental soundness play an enormous role in selectively choosing which dogs are breeding prospects. The German Shepherd is an athletic, loyal, self-assured, attentive, and intelligent dog. This applies to both competition dogs and family pets. Purchasing a puppy from titled parents ensures that the dogs being bred have passed vigorous testing and several judges along the way oversaw the process. Following this standard eliminates a biased breeder from breeding indiscriminately and encourages the goal to be producing the best puppies possible. At Centennial German Shepherds, meticulous planning and an abundance of thought go into producing every litter of puppies. Striving for excellence gives breeders credibility and provides the potential buyer with absolute assurance that their puppy is a product of deliberate and quality mating. Capo and our beautiful granddaughter, Shannon The meaning of Our New Kennel Name After working, showing, and breeding German Shepherds for over 25 years, we decided it was time to create a new kennel name and logo to signify our presence in Colorado the Centennial State combined with our Italian and Estonian foundation dogs. Centennial GSD chose to use the head of our gorgeous female Gucci and combine the American and Italian flags across her face to signify our team concept. Additionally, we blended the American and Estonian flags across our impressive male import's face to represent the Margman presence at Centennial. Our puppies are raised inside of our home where we can interact with them from birth until the day they leave with their new families. We assess them, take notes, photos, and videos, and create a detailed log about each puppy so that we can explain their individual characteristics and personalities as clearly as possible to anyone who is inquiring. We evaluate each puppy's growth and development, along with littermate interactions and responses to "daily life" situations on a full-time basis. Once the puppies are mobile, they are introduced to toys and small obstacles which are intended to spark curiosity and promote problem-solving and confidence. We understand that visiting the puppies or looking at photos is difficult, as both are only small snapshots of time in the rapidly changing life of a growing puppy. Visitors might experience the litter just before or after a nap, eating, playing, or any other event or activity that may skew the true personality of the puppy, and relying on a few minutes or even hours to make a decision can be overwhelming. For these reasons, frequent communication with prospective families from birth to placement is crucial. By clearly conveying expectations, we are able to assist in the selection process to ensure happiness and success for both the puppy and the individual families welcoming the youngster into their new home. Centennial GSD works hard at producing the finest German Shepherd Dogs through methodically and meticulously scrutinizing compatible bloodlines and pedigrees to ensure each breeding results in producing the best litter of puppies possible. Combining specific lines or avoiding lines that have genetic faults is important as we always have the betterment of the breed in mind. This is done by carefully choosing a mating pair that compliment one another by enhancing positive qualities and making an effort to reduce any faults known in one or both bloodlines. Our foundation dogs and the dogs we use for breeding trace back to the best Italian, Estonian, and German bloodlines. We seek out dogs with a geographically diverse gene pool while also studying line breeding to keep the integrity of the breed intact. By doing this, we reduce the risks associated with more closely related dogs. Our breeding dogs have certified hips and elbows, have been tested for DM, and are titled; ensuring that they are healthy both physically and mentally. None of the dogs in our breeding program and many generations back have joint or known hereditary issues and all of the dogs possess stable and wonderful temperaments. At Centennial quality over quantity always comes first. We stay in touch with our families after the sale of our German Shepherd puppies, whether it be for help with a question or just a friendly email to check-in. I sold several puppies almost two decades ago both out of state and overseas and have been fortunate enough to form beautiful friendships with many of those people that will last a lifetime. We take pride in our Colorado German Shepherds. Our goal is to produce healthy and beautiful German Shepherd puppies that win in the show ring, excel as working dogs, succeed as therapy or service dogs, and most importantly, flourish as loving family companions and guardians. I traveled to Estonia to pick up my female puppy Briatore Nordica, and while I was there I met another puppy her half-brother named Margman Othello. He was a gorgeous and friendly 7 month old sable youngster. Both puppies shared the same father, the magnificent multiple VA Margman Torsten. I was immediately smitten and consequently brought both back with me to Colorado. I also had the honor and pleasure of hosting Torsten, his owner, and his breeder at my home when they traveled to the United States for the first time after a Sieger Show. A few years later I imported another Margman female black and red who was bred to Torsten. Her puppies were wonderful and she enjoyed a nice life in Colorado. By this time Margman had become a household name and known for quality German Shepherds around the world. We had lovely puppies; a mix of sable and black and red, both long and short coats. It was then that I began my great love for the long haired German Shepherd. Rio was phenomenal in the show ring, he earned his SchH3 title, placed V1, and produced puppies that achieved the same and other working titles. He was a gentleman in the house and had a flawless character which he passed down to his puppies time and time again. His puppies excelled as therapy dogs, service dogs, and as healthy and loving family dogs. Rio was intelligent, possessed a solid temperament, and was stunning to look at. My beloved Rio was by far one of the best dogs I have ever had the privilege of owning and set the bar high for our future dogs. Now, many years later, I have once again imported a Margman dog; an impressive male to show, breed, and enjoy as a perfect companion dog. We look forward to combining the lines again and producing the best puppies possible. Expanding the gene pool while still staying true to the standard is our goal with future litters. Margman Dacapo is magnificent; an absolute dream dog. In we imported our first Margman long coat, a deeply pigmented black and red girl. Margit has bettered the breed by thinking outside of the box. To understand the origin of the Long-Haired German Shepherd, we must first delve into the history of the German Shepherd breed itself. Originally developed in Germany during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, German Shepherds were bred for their intelligence, versatility, and working ability. In the early years, long-haired pups were considered a fault and were often disregarded or even discarded. However, as time passed, enthusiasts began to recognize the unique beauty and charm of these long-haired individuals. The most striking feature of the Long-Haired German Shepherd is, of course, its lustrous coat. Imagine a canine draped in a flowing mane, resembling a majestic wolf from a fairy tale. The coat is dense and silky, often with an undercoat that provides insulation against varying weather conditions. These dogs are known for their athletic build and well-proportioned physique. On average, a male Long-Haired German Shepherd stands between 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder, while females generally measure between 22 to 24 inches. Their weight can vary between 50 to 90 pounds, depending on factors such as genetics, diet, and exercise. The coat of a Long-Haired German Shepherd is not just a visual delight; it also has practical benefits. This luxurious coat serves as a natural insulator, keeping the dog comfortable in both hot and cold weather. The double-layered coat is designed to regulate body temperature, allowing them to thrive in various environments. While their long locks exude an air of grandeur, they also demand a bit more care compared to their short-coated counterparts. Brushing: Regular brushing is essential to prevent matting and tangling of the long hair. A quality brush designed for long-haired breeds will help keep the coat in prime condition. Not only does brushing remove dirt and debris, but it also stimulates blood circulation and distributes natural oils, resulting in a healthier coat. Bathing: Just like any other dog, Long-Haired German Shepherds need regular baths to keep their coats clean and healthy. This can make grooming more manageable and help the dog stay comfortable, especially during warmer months. Special Attention: Pay close attention to areas prone to tangling, such as behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail. Regularly check for mats, which can be uncomfortable for your canine companion. Ensure they have access to fresh water at all times to keep their skin and coat hydrated from within. While they make loyal and loving companions, they do require dedicated grooming and exercise routines. Long-Haired GSDs can be social and friendly with proper socialization from a young age. Which coat to choose for your German Shepherd? Be careful not to let yourself be guided by the aesthetic side! It will not be the nails, the pretty little details, or the pockets that will preserve your German Shepherd from the cold. What is important is, first of all, the material. In fact, it is important to ensure that the coat is well suited to bad weather: snow, rain, cold weather. And to do this, the outfit must be warm enough and waterproof. That said, it will also be necessary that the overcoat is convenient to put on because it should not that it becomes a chore to prepare your German Shepherd. If the coat is well made, you will prepare more willingly and without difficulty your German Shepherd for his ritual hike. On the technical side, it is better for the coat to have a loop or an opening on the back to attach the leash. And then, to be appreciated by your doggie it will be necessary that this coat is suitably adjusted to the size and the morphology of your German Shepherd. It will not be necessary to acquire a garment too tight or too big. Among them, there were animals with both long hair and with a shorter, more rigid. At the same time, the founders of the breed believed that long-haired dogs could not work in adverse weather conditions. They were therefore considered a tribal marriage. In this, there is a certain truth: a luxurious mane and combed on the ground quickly turns into Kolton, from which branches and weeds come out. In , the first club was organized, dedicated to this particular branch. Breeding them as a separate breed is quite complex because, for a pair of long-haired parents, the offspring can be born with a normal short-hair cover. Just like when raising members of an ordinary breed, in the litter, a baby can have long hair. It should be noted that only in Russia such a variety of dogs is recognized as a separate breed. There are specialized clubs, exhibitions are organized. Abroad, long-haired puppies are considered a marriage. These are the dogs that are bought by big Russian clubs for breeding. When the animal dries, using a piece of deer and a comb, you must give the coat a beautiful appearance. Bi-color dual color Coat The long-haired German shepherd does not always have a double coat and is more susceptible to the cold and heat than its short and medium-haired counterparts. While this looks very nice and neat, it can have some negative side effects. The coat can trap water down the back and cause skin irritation that leads to infection. This is even more true for long-haired GSDs because their long coats get tangled, matted with dirt, and require daily brushing. A comb with long teeth will help get all the way through the coat to get tangles and shedding out, and a shorter brush will help smooth out the coat. If the coat is left to tangle and mat, it will pull on the skin, which will lead to sores, irritation, and infection. It is essential to run a comb or brush through their coat for at least a few minutes every single day. Owing to the fact that they have long tufts of hair around their ears, their ears can trap dirt and become infected fairly easily. The exercise can take the form of activities like going on walks, taking hikes, going to a reputable dog park, playing fetch in the garden if you have the space to run around, or intense training sessions. Additionally, mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise and will tire your dog out as much as if they went for a jog around the block. Puzzle toys , sniffing games, and obstacle courses are all excellent ideas for mental exercises. Finally, keep in mind that because long-haired German shepherds lack an undercoat and have extra-long hair, they can struggle to regulate their body temperature and will overheat easily if they spend too much time out in the sun. They have often completed house training as young as three months old. Many new owners appreciate this aspect of the breed when it comes to purchasing a new puppy. Both the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois are experienced police dogs. German Shepherds were first developed in the s by the Germans. They were bred with several different breeds to try and obtain the most trainable dog at that time. The result was successful, and the German Shepherd still stands out today as one of the most trainable dog breeds. Their temperament was another significant facet of their breeding. The goal was to have a level-headed dog that was obedient and protective. Since the beginning, their breeding may have changed their bone structure and stature slightly, but they still act similarly to the way that they were initially bred. They have become the second most popular dog breed in the U. The Belgian Malinois was bred at approximately the same time as the German Shepherd. The Belgian Malinois has a slightly more confusing timeline because their breed was first recognized as the Belgian Shepherd. Then, the breed was steadily split into three separate dog breeds, with the Belgian Malinois having a short coat and fawn coloring. Both dogs, especially since being imported to America, have been actively and consistently used in the police force. They have the perfect temperament for reliability, a balance of aggressiveness and obedience, and medium to large stature. The German Malinois has a high prey drive. If you have any cats, small mammals, or other smaller dogs, make sure the German Malinois is trained, so they know how to behave around these other animals. These pups have a strong desire to please their master or trainer, which is a large part of their acknowledged obedience. Occasionally, they exhibit more difficult tendencies in training, such as stubbornness or overexcitement. However, this is relatively rare and may signify a change in training style is needed. The German Malinois can be aloof toward new animals and humans. Their protective instinct is sometimes too strong for them to have the capacity to accept anything into their trust readily. This feature makes them an excellent guard dog and watchdog. Watch out for any unwanted aggressive behavior, particularly between two male dogs. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The reason for this is their heightened prey drive from years of being a herding dog. The German Shepherd side of them is generally good with kids, whereas the Belgian Malinois often is not as friendly, especially if they are pushed or pulled around. Keep a close eye on them around little kids. Due to their overall attitude concerning new animals and humans, it is best to get them accustomed to strangers by having them visit your home or go to the dog park. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She has the intelligence and loyalty of a Belgian Malinois. She already knows how to sit and lie down, and can walk off the leash. Piper is one of the greatest dogs we have owned. She gets a long with our cats and my young nieces. This is definitely a breed that needs to be brought up with children in order for them to have a good temperament with them. She is loyal and very protective, yet sociable once warmed up to people. She will remain petite, which she got from her dad, the Malinois. She is currently 35lbs and will mature no more than 10 more pounds. She has a double coat and medium-long hair, no shedding though. Still has her puppy hair, especially behind her ears. She loves the water and the snow, and has a very willing temperament. This is a great mix to own as they are a low maintenance and easy keeper. The only problem with her right now is she had a breakout of mange on her muzzle which the vet said is normal and is treatable. It is common to appear on pups around 6 months in age. This is a picture of her under my desk at work. His dad is a German Shepherd and his mom is a Belgian Malinois. We've never had a Mal before but we have had a GSD. He loves everyone. He's wary of new people. He loves our .Our GSD was my momma's boy. Rhemy can't pick a favorite! It's really sweet that he loves my husband as much as me! Tracked himself home on a walk at 3 months old! In the first picture I sent he was about 4 months old, in this picture he is now 4 years old!! Super smart and a real lover boy. Look at that beautiful face!! He came from a breeder in Cream Ridge, NJ. She said he was a "breeder mistake," but we think he is just perfect!! He is a real clown and loves to lounge on this blanket. He is 4 months old in this picture and is a real face washer!! She has exceptional intelligence. She understands sit, lie down, shake, speak and high-five by both verbal command and hand signals. We're still working on several other commands, of which 'stay' seems to be the hardest. At .She must constantly have something to chew on , otherwise she will shred anything within reach in record time, so rawhide chewbones are a necessity. She also replaced my broken paper shredder. Her herding instincts are very strong and will chase anything that moves, including a leaf blowing across the yard, butterflies, birds, etc. She has a variety of toys, but prefers the stuffed animal ones that squeak or make noise. She loves to play tug-of-war with her toys, be chased and chase you. Her love of water and mud puddles is exceptional and if you have a walk-in shower, don't leave the door open with the water running! She amuses herself by playing with her toys when left alone, but if someone is around, she has to be with them. When she needs to go out, she will find someone and lick their hand kisses until they take her out, otherwise she will lick and nip at your toes and heels to get you moving. She's very alert and will bark and growl at anything unfamiliar as long as she is standing behind your legs. Her worst fault is that if she is out in the open, she does not want to come when you call her. She wants you to come after her and just as you get within reach, she bolts off like a jackrabbit, and there's no catching her. We've learned the best way to get her attention is to ignore her and walk off like we're leaving her. The other fault is her constant attempts to get your attention to play with her, especially if you're trying to get ready for work. She waits until you get one leg into your jeans and then grabs the other, making you hop around on one leg trying to get the other pants leg back. As you pull on a sock, she either grabs the end and pulls it off, or she takes off with the other one so you'll have to chase her down. After you've gone through this same scenario with the shoes, she then follows you around pulling the laces to untie them or pulls back the Velcro straps. Her antics are limitless as is her energy level. Belgian Malinois are intelligent, protective, playful, and energetic. They tend to make great family pets. Should a Belgian Malinois Mix take after this parent, you should be able to expect something similar. A Belgian Malinois is known for their intelligence and prized for their hardworking nature and protective instinct. Their high energy and playful personality means they tend to retain a puppy-like demeanor until they are about three years old. They get along well with children as well as other dogs and pets in the household as long as they are socialized with them. Because of their protective instinct, socialization and training early and often are particularly important. The other parent breed could introduce some potential traits that could affect temperament. So, you do want to ask the other breeder about them. You can also meet the mother dog in person to see what sort of temperament she is modeling for her pups. Belgian Malinois are moderately adaptable dogs. Their high energy tends to make them a better fit for homes with securely fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as sufficient time is dedicated to giving them the exercise and training they need. As long as the other parent breed has similar adaptability traits, you should be able to expect the same in a Belgian Malinois Mix. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A mixed-breed dog can sometimes win the genetic lottery and inherit none of the potential health conditions common to either parent breed. At the same time, they could inherit potential conditions common to one parent or both parent breeds. From the Belgian Malinois side, potential health concerns include hip dysplasia, thyroid disease , and progressive retinal atrophy. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing issues on to puppies. Although the Belgian Malinois is highly intelligent and picks up on things easily, they are also high-energy dogs with an independent nature and a strong will. This means they are generally not a good fit for first-time dog owners. Puppy training classes are recommended, even for an experienced owner, as these classes often offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. A Belgian Malinois Mix can inherit a coat similar to one parent breed or a coat that is a blend of both, so grooming requirements will be different depending on coat type. Should they inherit a Belgian Malinois coat, they will shed moderately year-round and heavier when seasons change. A weekly brushing and the occasional bath are usually sufficient for this coat. And, you will want to brush them more often during seasonal changes. When checking ears, you are making sure they are clean, dry, and free of debris or pests. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. But, many dog owners skip or overlook this, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Belgian Malinois is a high-energy, athletic dog breed. They need daily walks, playtime, and extra activity every day to stay happy and healthy. They also need a job to do and are good candidates for dog sports like flyball, agility, and more. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Belgian Malinois Mix to be a high-energy dog as well. German Malinois Puppies Image Credit: Alina Ziabrieva, Shutterstock German Malinois puppies are known for their intelligence and trainability, making them a popular choice for those looking for a highly active and intelligent companion. German Malinois puppies are full of energy and require plenty of physical and mental stimulation to help them reach their full potential. Early socialization is crucial to help them develop into confident, well-rounded dogs. In terms of appearance, German Malinois puppies can resemble either parent breed, and their coat color and pattern can vary. They typically have a muscular and athletic build, with a medium-length, dense coat that requires regular grooming. Feeding a high-quality diet and providing plenty of exercise will help them grow into healthy, active dogs. With proper care and attention, German Malinois puppies can grow into loyal, loving companions that form strong bonds with their owners. German Malinois is not suitable for many homes, especially homes with young children. These dogs are also not great for homes that already have other pets. Are These Dogs Good for Families? German Malinois tend to take after the Belgian Malinois, making them a bit more aggressive, but their temperament can be unpredictable. This is why socialization at a young age is important. Some German Malinois can be less tolerant of young children due to their intense herding and hunting instincts. At the same time, other German Malinois take after the German Shepherds, making them relatively calm and tolerant around young children. Because this breed is unpredictable and their tendencies are not shown until they are adults, it is best to avoid getting a German Malinois if you are considering having children or already have young children. Older children will be fine with this breed since German Malinois get along just fine with adults. Although certain German Malinois can be okay with children and other family members, most are not compatible with other pets. Their herding and hunting tendencies mean that they want to herd or hunt small animals, including cats. With other dogs, they can be aggressive and incredibly territorial. This is especially true if both dogs are males and were not introduced to one another at a very young age. For these reasons, a German Malinois is best as the sole pet in the household. Its high energy means that it is best suited for homes with large yards and people who are very active. For this reason, you should feed your German Malinois about 3 cups of high-quality dry food a day. Select a dog food specifically for large dogs and dogs of its specific age group. This breed has a high activity level, meaning they need about 14 miles of walking a week and minutes of playtime a day. Incorporating mental activities into their playtime can make a huge difference. For example, playing fetch, retrieving, and tracking can be a great choice for keeping your German Malinois active. If you are unable to commit to minutes of playtime a day, do not get a German Malinois. This breed needs a whole lot of activity. If you do not exercise it properly, the dog can become mischievous and bored, making you an irresponsible dog owner. The best way to train a German Malinois is by using positive reinforcement but having a strong and firm voice at the same time. By integrating positive reinforcement with a firm voice, the German Malinois will start to listen since you show the dog you mean business. Since this breed is eager to please, using the right technique can make training a breeze. These dogs have coarse fur and shed. This dog breed often develops too much earwax, leading to infections and other ear issues. Cleaning out the earwax frequently will prevent these issues from occurring. As a result, German Malinois are really healthy too. These dogs can live quite a few years and live so healthily. Providing your German Malinois with proper exercise, food, and grooming will help prevent the most common health conditions for this breed. Minor Conditions.

Commonly employed as Guide Dogs, they love having a job to do, which means they will adore training. Anyhow, they will be a breeze to train. They will also do almost anything for your soft words and approval — your praise will work just as well as treats. Because they are so gentle, they are a great fit for families with a variety of lifestyles and ages. They need a good amount of exercise; mental as well as physical. Let us rephrase — a hefty amount of exercise. Besides you and food, being in water is what they love the most! They have a very strong sense of smell, so retrieving or scent work games tend to be the biggest treat for most. Golden Retrievers are the social butterflies of dogs. They love most people, and are not discreet in showing it. You know how us Brits can be about politeness. That being said, make sure you also teach them the wonders of giving things up. It can lead to great things! But it can also be less helpful when they give you a love bite on your arm — give them a toy to carry instead. Shift to some play, and revisit training later — we want training to be associated with fun, and not something they begin to dread. Crawl around on the floor and take note of what you see. Puppies will chew nearly anything, so make sure that there are no valuables down at puppy-height, or things that could be poisonous to them or be a choking hazard. Make sure there are no open cabinets or pantries where your puppy could get into food. Be careful of small trash cans that could hold some smelly trash that would be enticing to a puppy. And finally, next are a few other random tasks to do before you bring home your new puppy. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! Not exactly. Find a vet. This will help with training, socialization, and general learning how to be a puppy parent. Check your yard or house for any escape routes. A week after bringing Oliver home, it was very obvious to me why she asked me that. Puppies are hard work! Their little bladders can only hold it for a few hours, so this is expected. Chewing Puppies will try to chew any and everything. Like every thirty minutes often. Now, for the most important expectation of them all… You will miss puppyhood! Yes, you will miss the sleepless nights and puppy bites. So make sure to take lots of videos and pictures. How would you like to be treated in this situation? Here are some tips to help your puppy get comfortable in their new home. Let your puppy make decisions When you get to your house, set them at your open front door and let them choose to walk inside. Let them explore their new home on their own terms. Letting them make decisions can give them a sense of confidence, hope, and control, and ease into their new home. Limit visitors Now is the time to build the bond with your puppy and let them get to know you, not overstimulate them with a lot of people. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. In general, just keep things low key when you bring them home and let them get used to their surroundings. Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them. They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay , but it also includes life skills like crate training , potty training , how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash. Socialization Socialization is something that is not talked about as much as it should be. It can help mitigate fear and aggression and help them become confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. You can socialize your puppy with other dogs by setting up play dates with gentle dogs that you know are vaccinated and by going to puppy kindergarten. Dog to other living beings includes humans, cats, and other animals. You can socialize them with other people by taking them to a pet-friendly store like home depot, and you can socialize them to other animals by taking a walk by the neighborhood cat with lots of distance between them, so neither animal gets overwhelmed. Dog to stuff is the broadest category, but no less important. When Oliver was very young we were on a walk and a FedEx truck drove by. He had never heard a big truck like that and was terrified. So make sure that your puppy is comfortable with trucks, cars, the garage door, buses, umbrellas, and whatever other objects they may encounter. For instance, if you live in Chicago, get them used to trains, buses and crowded streets. Every day, separate out five special treats for your puppy. For example, you might let your neighbor give your puppy a treat, or maybe you take your puppy to a bus stop and when the bus goes by you give them a treat, or maybe you introduce them to a cow and give them a treat. The treat helps them have a positive experience with these new things and people, plus it helps you easily remember to expose them to lots of these new things. Do this for the first four weeks of their life and before you know it, your puppy will have been exposed to new dogs, people, things, or environments, and will be well on their well to becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppy Raising Mistakes Below are some mistakes that new puppy owners make that could make it harder to train and raise their puppy into a happy, confident adult. Not remembering how young they are Puppies are like little toddlers. Waiting to train your puppy until they have a problem Training your puppy before they have any behavior problems will make life so much easier for you. Forcing things too quickly Things like crate training and potty training take time. Setbacks hurt more than stretching their limits will help, so be patient and take things slowly. Conclusion Golden retriever puppies might just be the best living beings on the planet. However, they are a lot of work and can be quite naughty sometimes. How do you know if the Golden Retriever is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on Golden Retrievers! Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. Later in the s, they soon became a popular breed amongst American families when President Gerald Ford had a Golden named Liberty as his family dog. Golden Retrievers, like their name states, are golden! Their luxurious coats come in a variety of light to dark shades, ranging from light like the white Golden Retriever or English Cream to dark golden colors, even close to chocolate. Their coats feature feathering down their backs, chest, belly, hindquarters, and tails. Goldens have soft expressions combined with floppy expressive ears that give them a puppy-like appearance even as adults. Another thing to note of the Golden Retriever is that those fluffy coats are actually what are known as double coats. These pups, with consistent early socialization, can adapt and thrive to living in a home with other dogs, or pets, and children! They love to play and make great playmates. That being said, their social nature can lead to dependencies on their owners and family. Golden Retrievers may develop separation anxiety if left alone and not properly trained from an early age. Golden Retrievers may also contract heart disease called subvalvular aortic stenosis SAS that with early diagnosis and treatment can allow for a regular life-span. Some overly energetic and friendly pups can get excitable around new people and dogs. That can result in some unwanted whining, lunging, and jumping. When done correctly, socialization helps teach your puppy the proper way to greet people, other dogs and create boundaries. During socialization sessions, you can work with your puppy on those common over-excited behaviors when meeting strangers. And if you're not sure how to do this on your own, hire a local puppy trainer or join an online puppy training school to help set you up for the best success! Do Calming Obedience Exercises With all their high-energy and high-drive, teaching your Golden how to be calm in everyday scenarios will help tame that wild side! Great calming exercises include having your puppy learn to wait for their food bowl and in thresholds each time you enter or leave a space. This also extends to activities like fetch. Goldens are a natal for this! This can be done simply by having your pup drop the toy when they return and pausing for a few moments giving them a chance to settle before throwing it again for them to retrieve. Teach Them to Walk Nicely on Leash Many high-energy pups have a tendency to lunge toward exciting new things! Couple that with a social nature, and you may encounter that your Golden Retriever puppy will start to pull on leash. Focus on teaching them proper leash manners including how to walk in Heel position and how to pass other people and pups without lunging, jumping and excited whining, barking or nipping at them! That can greatly help possible bad encounters with strangers and other dogs while teaching them great habits! Did you recently bring home a Golden Retriever puppy? Parasites Neutering and Spaying Finally, she addresses specific topics for new owners and breeders each with a distinct chapter, including a puppy's first visit to the vet written by Jean H. Cunningham-Smith, VMD. This book is basically a compilation of responses to questions owners of new puppies have asked her over the course of three decades working with new owners and their families. In addition, she discusses matters she finds interesting or fascinating. Nor does she avoid discussing areas controversial in the breed: "Not everything is known about so-called genetic defects," she says. She is not only clearly fascinated with the lives of these wonderful creatures, but she is as closely connected to their world as she is to ours. From the Publisher: Golden Retriever puppies. How can we better understand these little creatures who live in a world of perceptions more acute and quite dissimilar from ours? What is their world of sense impressions like when compared to ours-a world of different colors, of sounds unknown to us because existing in octaves above and below our hearing ability, a universe of olfactory qualities and substances so completely unfamiliar to us? Why are our perceptions so different from theirs? Where do these two "worlds" come from? One answer of course resides in understanding that we and they were able to survive, and have evolved, in response to environments that were important to each of us. We adapted. In this sense, we are also both very similar. Ann Johnson stands in the middle of these two worlds-our world and the world of the puppy-where there are so many differences and similarities-where answers may be true for one but not for the other. What Ann brings to this discussion are very personal and practical ways of looking at the subject of raising Golden Retrievers, which has inspired her during more than thirty years of studying the breed, along with devising solutions that have helped her, that work for her. The wellspring of science rests on a curiosity about the natural world and the desire to make improvements, a desire to understand the puzzling mysteries of life on earth. Thus, the aim of science, it can be said, is to "to advance our understanding of nature. Even today these methods orchestrate the way research is still carried on. Not that much has changed in methodology during the past years, except in the rigor with which it is now practiced and the practical need for universally understood definitions and terminologies. What inspires science, however, is its openness to challenge-the willingness to acknowledge new and better explanations based on recent information and confirmation. Every perceived confirmation lends support to the evidence that the new explanation is indeed more nearly the correct one for a certain time or place. There are still so many questions and problems for which science does not yet have complete answers or indeed any suggestions for answers. For instance, why do two primate species almost phenotypically identical, the Chimpanzee and the Bonobo, have two totally different social structures-one entirely male dominated; the other completely female dominated-and both completely successful? Or why are the phenotypes of certain species-for example, the coelecanth and horseshoe crab-unchanged after millions of years? In the area of the micro-world, what are the effects of "protein folding" and what are the evolutionary origins of exons and introns? The world of nature changes; the world of nature also remains the same. It is time to understand the natural world in biologically scientific terms, to trust the observations of practicing scientists, to sift the facts, and to adjust our thinking according to new realities based on the evidence. New facts and the interpretation of facts are increasing exponentially, in bursts over short time periods, and undergoing intense scrutiny. Scientific knowledge is accumulating at a rapid pace. Indeed, that is the calling of scientists, and their bliss. They glide slowly along complex mental pathways toward "truth," which is the testing of fact or an explanation for its possible refutation, choosing the path that will lead most quickly to results. For example, the author does not shy away from addressing areas that are of major concern to breeders and owners. Focusing on the nature and history of cancer and canine hip dysplasia, she offers an overview of different perspectives presently in vogue. Her own explanations, though slow to develop, are based on decades of observation, on discussions with other breeders and owners, on the considerable literature on these subjects, and on results. Her conclusions may challenge previously "accepted wisdom," but her observations must be, at the very least, addressed. One thing that sustains her hypotheses, controversial though they may be, is the scientific perspective. It is the legitimate and necessary goal of breeders to improve the breed. But this goal will not be realized if "improving the breed" is based on fundamental misunderstandings relevant to life or lives that can be well lived. It is also the duty of breeders to share their experiences and to provide hypotheses and offer better explanations about ways to reach their goals-explanations based on observations and on the search for exceptions-and to discuss them and have them challenged. In this book, the author has handled complex and controversial areas in a straightforward way that I hope will open doors to more fruitful discussions of these topics in future, in an arena of intellectually honest debate. From the Author: For more than thirty years I have been raising my Gold-Rush Golden Retrievers and have enjoyed seeing these puppies go off to become happy members of many families. The relationship between the Golden and his family is very special because nothing pleases the Golden more than to be with his family. I hope this book will be of value both to new puppy owners as well as responsible breeders of Golden Retrievers who address questions posed by owners of their new puppies. These observations and ideas of course are based on my own experience, reading, personal research, and interactions with responsible breeders past and present, and I trust they may be of some benefit to those who believe, as I do, that a thorough knowledge of the breed will enable us to enjoy better the unique qualities of our beloved Goldens. I do not regard this book as a definitive work on puppy management and training, or a reference book on canine pediatrics. It is basically a compilation of responses to questions people have asked me during the course of more than three decades of working with new puppy owners and their families. In addition I refer to matters that I have found interesting as a biologist and to situations and "laws of nature" that have helped me understand those Goldens that have been such a great part of my life.
Some dog breeds are excessive barkers. They bark at almost anything, which can cause grounds for complaints. It can also be frustrating for you, as the fur-parent, to constantly deal with a dog that excessively barks. So do Labradoodles bark a lot? Labradoodles are very vocal and communicative canines. In fact, they fall under the mild-barkers category. They usually bark for a reason. This breed is gentle, kind, and is among the highly socialized dogs. All dog barks. It is part of being a dog. It is also one of their ways to tell you something. Asking your dog to not bark is like asking a person to stop talking. So within reason, it is perfectly fine for your Labradoodle to woof. You need to learn how to decipher what is causing the yapping. And identify whether it is within reason or something for you to worry about. And again, since Labradoodles are medium barkers, knowing the common reasons for their dog shouting can come in handy. Attention-Grabbing Yapping Like you and all the rest of the creatures here on the planet, if you feel like you are being ignored or neglected, you will do something about it. If you have not spent much time with your Labradoodle, you will observe some of its behaviors that are aimed to get your attention. It might become annoyingly playful where it starts stealing your shoes. Your furbaby might even chew on some furniture. Come notice me! For your dog, it is a fix for being ignored. The Case of Night Barking Labradoodles are not keen night barkers, which is good, but if they start becoming one, there might be some things triggering it. Medical condition: Sick Labradoodles and the older ones suffering age related degeneration can eventually turn into night barkers. Pair that with failing eyesight , and every shadow and rustle means Red Alert. With no people to interact with, out of boredom, your naughty Labradoodle might start barking for no reason at all. Are you walking and exercising your Labradoodle enough? Separation anxiety: This may be true for Labradoodles as well as any other kind of dog who is yet to become comfortable in your new home or Labradoodles who have been in an abusive home before. Labradoodles are very social and love a cuddle. This can be night critters, raccoons, or cats that are making a habit of visiting your home when night falls, or even some nefarious people outside. Fear of thunderstorms: Labradoodles are very sensitive to flashes and loud noises, and thunderstorms include both of these. Expect that during lightning and thunderstorms, your Labradoodle will feel scared and will have an unstoppable woofing episode. Dogs can also get nightmares. Excitement to the Highest Level This is barking for joy! Once your best friend calms down, the barking will also stop. Barking to Protect Your Labradoodle may protect you or it may be protecting itself from something that it feels is a threat. Additionally, this breed also has a penchant for barking at people walking by. The overwhelming number of unknown faces may cause your dog to give a loud warning of its presence. Hey, Unfamiliar Faces! New faces of family, friends, and guests may warrant some unnecessary woofing from a Labradoodle. Initially, the unfamiliar faces are seen as risks to their human family, but after settling down and having seen that they are welcomed, your Labradoodle will calm down but may still be on high-alert. Provide timely praises and even treats when your dog does something good. Gradually expose your Labradoodle to loud noises. Recordings of thunderstorms playing in the background can be a good starter. Never approach or surprise your Labradoodle when it is eating. Take the time to assure your doggo that there is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, with consistent effort, you can even have your Labradoodle bark only when necessary. There are many methods that Labradoodle trainers and owners use, but below is a 3-step method that is known to help with too much barking. This may not be the top favorite because it involves ignoring your Labradoodle, but the method is proven to be effective. Yes, even if you get frustrated and angry, turn a deaf ear and pretend that you do not hear anything. Continue ignoring your dog even if it takes hours at a time. Training Step 2 — Give Due Recognition After a yapping episode, your Labradoodle will also get tired and will stop on its own. When this happens, give your dog all your attention. As soon as it stops barking, it is time to give some treats and plenty of praise and cuddles. Training Step 3 — Do the Cycle Continuous reinforcement is essential. There should be no exemptions on your part to not do this religiously. You will notice that the woofing episodes will start getting shorter. A Black Labradoodle with brown furnishings facial hair Additional Tips and Tricks for a Barking Labradoodle Never show anger toward your dog for its barking. And never physically punish your doggo for any reason! Showing anger toward your dog can lead to fear and even aggression in them. Establish a routine for your Labradoodle. This will allow adequate enrichment and assurance to your furbaby when it is left alone. This needs to be a consistent practice. If your dog usually spends time in the yard facing the street where the unfamiliar passers-by can trigger a woofing episode, then try having your dog in the back of the house. Labradoodle bark collars — do they work? A: Non-shock bark collars are designed to provide a gentle deterrent to excessive barking without delivering an electric shock. Q: My older Labradoodle has started barking more often without any apparent reason. Could this be senility, and how can I manage it? A: Yes, older dogs, including Labradoodles, can exhibit increased barking due to cognitive decline or senility, known as Canine Cognitive Dysfunction CCD. This is somewhat akin to dementia in humans. Create a Routine: Dogs with CCD benefit from a structured routine, as predictability can help reduce anxiety and confusion. Provide Mental Stimulation: Engage your Labradoodle in gentle but mentally stimulating activities. Puzzle toys or simple training exercises can help. Medication: In some cases, veterinarians might prescribe medication to manage symptoms of CCD. Comfortable Environment: Ensure your dog has a comfortable resting place, and consider using calming products, like pheromone diffusers or calming wraps, to help reduce anxiety. Patience: Understand that your dog is not barking on purpose or to be defiant. Be patient, gentle, and consult with professionals for guidance. Addressing senile barking requires a blend of patience, understanding, and proactive care to ensure the well-being of your aging Labradoodle. Q: Do Labradoodles have a tendency to howl? Reasons can vary, from responding to certain noises like sirens , to seeking attention, to expressing discomfort or anxiety. Most of the time, they bark within reason as it is also a means of serving their purpose as dogs. But when you observe that they seem to be yapping to draw attention or are developing an unwanted behavior, then make sure that you take the necessary actions to correct it. Labradoodles are bright, so you can incorporate training to address their behavior. Brief History of the Labradoodle The story goes that the Labradoodle was first bred in Australia in to become a guide dog for a blind woman somewhere in Hawaii. Today, the Labradoodle doodle breed has made its mark with its adorable looks and reliable alertness. Used as companion animals and the occasional therapy dog — the Labradoodle temperament is famous. Known for being affectionate with humans as well as other pets, this playful breed prefers to be involved in all human activities. Not only do they love to play, but they are also good at handling responsibilities. Similar to their parents, Labradoodles are full of energy. From doodle puppy to senior dog — they crave your attention and love being around you. They do suffer from separation anxiety. As excellent swimmers, you can count on these furballs ready to join you in some playful water fun. Some puppies can be loud, while others are more reserved. The same can be said of the appearance of their coat. Some Labradoodles take more of their Poodle parent breed heritage while others their Labrador Retriever breed. Some Labradoodles require higher maintenance and are more prone to shedding. It all hangs on which side of the parent it is leaning toward. But overall, a Labradoodle is a kind and enthusiastic dog that can make your day better. They need a lot of physical and mental stimulation, so this dog is best for people who have enough space where they can freely run around. Aside from always being enthusiastic, Labradoodles also love jumping around. So you need to be extra watchful if your kids and Labradoodle are playing in the same area. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. If you really want to stop the barking, then you will have to find the main cause of the behavior. Communication The first thing you should know is that all breeds of dogs bark to some extent as a way of communicating. Your Labradoodle probably has numerous different kinds of barks and each one is used to convey a different message. I have told my family that it is not reasonable to expect a dog to never bark at all, as that would basically be like expecting your child to never speak a word either. If you really want to understand these differences, you will have to pay attention to the duration, frequency, and pitch of the barking. Where on the other hand, if your Doodle is barking with a slow, low pitch bark mixed with a sense of aggression, your furry friend is feeling threatened in some sort. If you are able to understand what your dog is saying with the barking, then you will be able to address the problem. If you manage to remove whatever is threatening your dog, he will almost certainly stop barking. So, the first step to stop a Labradoodle from barking is to understand what he is communicating and why he is barking. Labradoodles are pack animals and they understand that there are followers and leaders. And one of the primary goals for the pack leader is to protect the pack. They are just howling out for you to return back home. They are really just trying to do one of their primary jobs. All-day long, and all over your home, you know exactly where they are. They are always safe. But what if they suddenly walk out of the home and close the front door behind them locking you inside, how would you react? But what if you found that the door was locked and there was no way for you to it. Every single door and window in your home is locked tightly. Then how would you react? Would you find your phone and call for help? Shout and scream for help then? Well yes, you probably would, and that is exactly what your Labradoodle is doing in this situation. But for some reason, this is still one of the most common practices to get a Labradoodle to stop barking. I think that because these distractions temporarily manage to stop the barking is the reason why so many people think they seriously work. You must give your dog enough opportunities to associate the command with being quiet. There are several benefits to teaching your Doodle this command. It gives you a verbal cue that will quiet down your Labradoodle in any given situation. Train the Command Try and figure out what situations make your Labradoodle bark and attempt to recreate one of those. Your Doodle will usually start barking when you do this. Then you repeat this process several times. You can probably expect that your Labradoodle will test your resolve. Mental Stimulation If you have a Labradoodle that barks for no apparent reason, they might also simply be bored! Labradoodles are highly intelligent dogs that require mental stimulation to avoid boredom from becoming an issue. Exercise: You should always exercise your dog before you leave as a tired dog is a lot more likely to relax. One of the most efficient ways to help your dog burn off some excess energy is to take them out for some playtime. Find the right area: Try leaving your dog in different sports. Some dogs will relax more when inside, others outside and some also prefer smaller spaces such as a bathroom. There are several things that can make a dog uncomfortable. So consider if your Labradoodle has enough shade, space, water and so on. Watered and Fed: You should always make sure to leave water down and that your Doodle is well-fed and warm before you leave. Pick up the Bones: You could also try and leave toys around for your dog but avoid using bones. Check out this link to see the current price on Amazon. Music and TV: You could also consider leaving the TV or music on for your dog as these distractions can also be of help. Dog Walkers: A break during the middle of the day can definitely help break up a monotonous day for a dog. I got him out walking twice a day, and he loved it and it was also highly beneficial for me. I was able to get out of the office twice a day, and the walk gave me a lot more energy for the rest of the day. Leave Quietly: You should leave your dog quietly. Say your goodbyes 5 minutes before leaving to help your dog stay relaxed when you finally leave. Anxiety Jackets: You can also find comfort and anxiety jackets online, that will help to keep your dog calm and relaxed. They are not guaranteed success though, as it depends on the dog. I would suggest if you are really serious about how to stop a Labradoodle from barking that you also take a look at something called The Dog Solution. And they offer many training methods for other issues you might have with a Labradoodle. If you provide your dog with confidence throughout the entire training process, they will be able to gain a sense of confidence if you are able to remain consistent with the expectations and commands. You will have to remain calm and patient. These are two personal traits that will inspire confidence in your Doodle. When you first introduce your Labradoodle to any new skill or behavior, it will typically take some time. Their initial response may seem like they are not ready to play along, but the reality is that they are just trying to figure things out. Although barking is a normal behavior for dogs, when it is excessive or uncontrolled it becomes unacceptable to the owners or neighbors. For example, if barking is an attempt to get a person or animal to retreat and the person retreats, then the barking was successful and the behavior has been reinforced. If barking is response to new sights or sounds, or is intended as a greeting behavior, then the Australian Labradoodle will become more anxious if it is not allowed to greet or if it leads to anxiety, yelling or punishment by the owners. You can reduce barking in your Australian Labradoodle puppy by socializing them to as many new people, dogs, places, sights, sounds and odors as possible. If there are no negative consequences and the puppy is not rewarded for barking, it should get used to these stimuli. For puppies that need more enrichment or companionship, a second dog may help reduce anxiety induced barking. Before trying to stop your dog barking, you need to understand several things: 1. The principle is to ignore barking and reward what you do want quiet. A favored dog treat or clicker saved for quiet training can be most effective. Do not reward any barking behavior by giving attention or by allowing the barking to be successful e. Do not punish barking as this can increase anxiety or may inadvertently serve as attention. Focus on teaching your dog that when it is quiet it will be rewarded. To reduce departure anxiety, establish a predictable routine that provides sufficient enrichment but also provides times when your dog learns to spend time alone. Dogs that bark to get attention should receive no attention until they are quiet or calm by waiting and ignoring, training quiet or by using a head collar. For example, dogs that bark in the yard or at people passing by should be left inside the house or in a place where they cannot see people through the fence. When you achieve good control over your Australian Labradoodle you can start managing the problem: 1. Teach your dog the quiet command. Your dog can be taught to quiet by teaching the bark command then reinforcing quiet. You can effectively stop barking by using a food or dog toy lure or a head collar and then reinforcing quiet behavior. A quiet command should be paired with each session where the dog can be successfully taught to quiet. Training should be done in areas where there are no distractions. Gradually shape the behavior so that your dog stays quiet for longer periods of time. Other devices that may help stop barking and achieve quiet include devices that are activated by owners shake can, ultrasonic trainer, noise devices and those activated by the barking itself e. While these products may work as a deterrent in the short term, they are most successful if the owner is present to train and reinforce the dog each time it is quiet. During training, it is important not to leave your dog alone in situations where it might bark. Identify the stimuli that initiate anxiety induced barking and gradually desensitize your dog. Ensure you introduce your guests to your pet properly and let them get to know your guests to minimize barking. I have one neighbor my dog adores. Although raising awareness about how fireworks affect animals, there are still so many used throughout the year that traumatizes dogs, causing them to hide away, run away, or bark a lot. So instead of getting angry and shouting at them to stop, ignore them. Doing this will teach them that barking is not the way to get what they want. Step Two: Reward The Good Habit Once your Labradoodle has stopped barking, give them a treat or a cuddle to encourage your desired behavior. Positive reinforcement will get you a lot further than shouting. Step Three: Repeat To see results with your training, you need to be consistent. Your Labradoodle will learn a habit over time. The barking episodes will slowly decrease once they pick up on the pattern: barking gets you nothing, and behaving gets you treats. Provide Enough Exercise Be sure to give your Labradoodle enough exercise. Lack of exercise is one of the biggest reasons a dog will bark. You should count on providing your adult Labradoodle with around minutes of exercise throughout the day. While puppies and senior dogs will need less but still enough to tire them out. A good way to prevent them from barking during thunderstorms and other loud noises is to play similar sounds around them gradually. Provide Enough Toys Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent, so you need to keep them entertained and mentally stimulated as much as possible. Sometimes, the owner can be trying with every imaginable step to stop the barking, but it continues. There are several methods you can use to train your dog to stop barking. You can try one of two methods or a combination of both. Early Socialization: Socializing your Labradoodle puppy around as many people, places and things as possible at a very young age will make him more comfortable when he does see those things in the future. This will eliminate barking out of fear or anxiety or because he feels someone is invading his territory. Ignore the Barking — Reward the silence Try ignoring the barking. In most cases, the dog is barking to get attention regardless of the type of bark. The second the dog stops barking, give him praise and a treat. At the same time, do not punish the dog for barking or put him in his crate. In a controlled situation you can try and get him used to being around cats, especially early on if this will happen frequently. Teach her what will make you happy: A good way to teach your Labradoodle puppy to not bark excessively is to correct the problem at the first unnecessary bark. The second the dog stops barking, praise him and give him a treat. The earlier the training begins, the easier and quicker it will be. As annoying as excessive barking can be, sometimes it can be caused by a health issue. If he is in pain or discomfort, he really has no other way to communicate with you. Excessive barking can be caused by something as simple not so simple to your pup like a bee sting or toothache to something as complicated as a brain disease. If the dog has a health issue that causes ongoing pain, this could very easily make the dog bark. Older dogs often suffer from chronic pain and may bark when the pain becomes serious. Unless you think licking the burglar all over while wriggling with happy excitement is a mark of a good guard dog! The standard Poodle, however, typically makes an excellent watchdog. But if your Labradoodle inherits their personality from the Labrador Retriever parent dog, you will definitely need a Plan B for your home security needs. As an admirer of one of these lovely furry companions, you may question how much it costs to buy and own a Labrador Retriever. We'll explore the upfront price of purchasing a puppy and the routine costs associated with pet ownership. We'll also cover various factors that can impact the cost of a Lab and provide tips on how to reduce the cost of owning one. The cost of a Lab can vary depending on several factors such as its age, color, purpose show or field , whether it's a purebred, and more. Routine Care Expenses Owning a Labrador Retriever requires some routine care expenses, which should be taken into account when considering the overall cost of having a pet. One of the essential expenses is veterinary care, which includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, and emergency medical care. Labs are prone to specific health issues, such as hip dysplasia , eye problems, and skin allergies, which may require additional medical attention and expenses. Another routine care expense for Labs is feeding. As they are a somewhat larger breed, they require a substantial amount of food to maintain their weight and energy levels. Additionally, treats, chews, and supplements can also be added to their diet, increasing the overall cost of nutrition. Proper grooming and hygiene are essential to keep a Lab healthy and comfortable. Remember that training and behavioral classes may be necessary to ensure your Lab is well-behaved and socialized, which can also be costly. These expenses should be considered when determining if a Lab is the right breed for you and your budget. How much a Labrador Retriever puppy costs depends on multiple factors, such as the breeder's reputation, the location of the pup, the bloodline, and more. Additionally, the cost may increase if the puppy comes with additional services such as health certificates, microchipping , or first vaccinations. Your pup will also need feeding, grooming, and bathing factored into their expenses, as well as beds, toys, chews, leashes, collars, harnesses, and much more. Consider the following: Buying From a Breeder vs. While adopting a Lab may be less expensive, it is essential to note that some shelters may have restrictions and requirements that need to be met before adoption. However, buyers should be cautious and avoid buying from dishonest breeders who may be selling mixed-breed dogs as purebreds. Breeders Reputation Reputable breeders who prioritize health, temperament, and breed standards usually charge more for their puppies. It's crucial to research the breeder thoroughly and ensure that they follow ethical breeding practices before making a purchase. This includes checking their breeding practices, requesting health certificates and pedigrees, and visiting their facilities in person if possible. Buyers should also be cautious of breeders who offer extremely low prices, as that might be a sign of unethical practices. Estimated Size The estimated size of an adult Labrador retriever is around about .Average Price To Buy A Lab Puppy From A Breeder The average price to buy a Lab puppy from a breeder is different from one person to the next, according to the reputation the breeder has in the community, the dog's bloodline, and their location. Again, the color of the Lab plays a significant factor as well. In addition to the cost of the puppy, there are also other expenses associated with owning a Lab. This includes routine care costs such as food, toys, grooming supplies, and veterinary visits for vaccinations and check-ups. Owners should also budget for unexpected expenses such as emergency veterinary care or unexpected illnesses. Remember that a reputable breeder may charge more for their puppies, but they are more likely to provide you with a healthy, well-socialized puppy from a good bloodline. Average Cost To Adopt A Lab Puppy Adopting a Lab puppy is generally less expensive than buying one from a breeder, but the costs can still vary widely. However, it's crucial to research adoption agencies thoroughly to ensure that they are reputable and the dogs are healthy and well-cared for before making a decision. You don't want to bring a sickly pup into your home, just to end up spending more on medical bills than you had anticipated. However, the costs don't stop there. Labrador Retriever Breed Guide Labrador Retrievers are outgoing and generally have a friendly disposition toward others. They are loyal, affectionate and make excellent family pets. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which makes them great for first-time dog owners. Due to their friendly nature, they also make excellent therapy dogs and are often used in service roles. Labrador Retrievers generally come in three colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. The coat is short, dense, and water-resistant, which makes them excellent swimmers. Labs can be medium to large dogs that weigh about 55 to 80 pounds on average, with the males usually outweighing the females by ten pounds. Typically, they're around two feet tall inches , and the males will have about a one-inch height advantage over the females. The average lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is around 12 years, although some can live up to 14 years. They are all around healthy, but like all dogs, there are specific ailments that you're more likely to encounter with a Lab, like obesity, ear infections, and hip dysplasia. As for lifetime care costs, they can vary depending on factors such as food, vet bills, and grooming expenses. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Labrador Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog from a shelter is usually less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder. Typically, dog shelters will include initial vaccinations, any spaying or neutering services needed, along with essential veterinary care up front. That helps cut down on some of the initial costs that owners usually spend when they first bring a puppy home. However, it's not uncommon that breeders will also at least include the first vaccinations for the pup upon its release to your family. Another option to reduce the cost of owning a Lab is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may already be trained and require less attention and socialization than a puppy, which can save on training costs and time. Moreover, older dogs may have lower veterinary bills since they may not require as many check-ups or preventative care as a puppy. Finally, another way to save money on the lifetime costs of owning a Labrador Retriever is to invest in preventative care. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary check-ups to catch potential health issues early on. While preventive care may require an upfront investment, it can ultimately save money by avoiding expensive medical bills down the line. Final Thoughts: The Cost of Owning a Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds to own, but they can be somewhat high maintenance after you bring them into your home. However, there are ways to reduce costs, such as adopting from a shelter or rescue organization, buying an older dog instead of a puppy, and being mindful of routine care costs. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. If we have helped you create a budget that allows you to get one of these amazing pets, please share this guide on how much it costs to own a Labrador Retriever on social media. Featured Image Credit: scott, Pixabay Contents. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:. Your Labrador puppy will need a bed, collar, leash, poop bags, food bowls, food, treats, toys, grooming supplies, and a dog crate. It is important to get any dog licensed to avoid legal issues. Training Labrador Retrievers are easy to train and do not require professional training. But, some keepers choose to take their Lab to puppy school. Because they are highly motivated, Labradors also do great in agility training. This is also a great way for them to use up their energy. Owners can either build their own agility course or pay to put their dog in agility classes. Vet Fees and Insurance One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is all the vet visits. This includes all of their shots and monthly checkups. A way to help reduce the cost of veterinary bills is through buying pet insurance. It is best to start paying for a pet insurance policy when your Labrador is a puppy. Senior dogs are more expensive to cover since they are more likely to develop health problems. Food When it comes to feeding a Labrador, they are not cheap. Labradors eat a lot of food. They are medium to large-sized dogs and weigh around 70 pounds. These prices are based on feeding a high quality kibble. Wet food can easily cost several hundred dollars more. Backyard Breeders One important thing every potential owner should remember is to avoid backyard breeders and pet shops. It is true that these places sell dogs for a much lower price. But, that does not mean they will be cheaper over their lifespan. Backyard breeders do not screen their dogs to determine if they have inheritable health problems. This results in Lab puppies being born that are more likely to develop health issues such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. These breeders also do not provide proper veterinary care for their puppies. Many are sold while having worms or fleas and having received no socialization. Ethical Labrador breeders ensure their breeding stock is screened and their puppies are healthy and socialized before placing them into their new homes. Labrador Retrievers can develop diseases of the eye. The form of this disease that is very common is Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration. Caused by an inheritable genetic mutation, it ultimately leads to blindness. Screening will help to prevent you from buying a puppy that may become blind later on in life. Dogs with this disease will lose their sight between one and eight years of age. Hip and Elbow Scores Another health problem that Labradors are prone to is hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a genetic skeletal disease that causes the hip joint to not form properly. This results in the femur grinding against the hip causing deterioration and loss of function. Many Labradors with this condition end up having to undergo surgery to reduce pain and regain function in their hips. The average hip score for a Labrador retriever is 12, so any score below that is considered good. Ideally, good breeders will only breed dogs with hip scores under .This will prevent you from purchasing a Labrador puppy that will require expensive surgery later on in its life. Purpose American Labradors are best suited for active families. Families that enjoy activities such as swimming, running, and hiking. They are great for families with older children who can engage and play with them more. American Labs would also do best with owners who can dedicate more time to them because they require a lot of exercise every day. People who work from home or part time would be ideal. English Labradors would make great pets for quieter families because they have a calmer personality. They are also gentler and would do well with a family that has young children. Since they are less active, they are suitable for a busier family who has less time to exercise them. Their docile, patient attitude also makes them excellent candidates to be service dogs so they would be a great dog for people who need one in their life. Summary The price of a Labrador can vary depending on if you get one from a breeder or rescue. Its color, pedigree and health will also influence the price. All Labradors are prone to health conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and hip or elbow dysplasia. Make sure the breeder screens for these health conditions before breeding. This will help to ensure your puppy is healthy. The cost to keep a Labrador healthy, exercised and happy can get pricey. But, if an owner has done their research and prepared themselves, then Labradors make an excellent addition. What Lab do you prefer? American, English, or mixed? Let us know! He has spent decades training working dogs and spends most of his spare time studying, reading and learning about their behavior and welfare. For the complete list please see our Boxer Breeders List page. Boxers are best known for their short coats, but they also come in long-haired varieties. Prices vary on the type of coat. The price of a boxer puppy may also vary because of the place you get the Boxer. For example, most breeders in or around Georgia charge significantly more than a breeder who is located in another state or country. Prices will also fluctuate depending on whether or not the puppy is show-quality. Boxers are known for being loyal to their families and being intelligent. They are generally very friendly with children, strangers, and other animals unless they have been trained to be aggressive American Kennel Club. They require moderate exercise but do best in homes where someone is around during the day because they do not like being left alone especially if they have never been apart from them before. Overall these characteristics make the Boxer a great family pet. These clearances can be found by looking up the parent dogs on the OFA website offa. They should also show you where and how they were raised and keep them until they are at least eight weeks old to ensure that they have been properly socialized, which is crucial for a Boxer puppy. Ask about any hip or eye problems in their lines. Where and how many generations of champion bloodlines do they go back? This is usually more important for those who want to breed their new puppy as it shows they have a lot of knowledge about the breed and can provide you with knowledgeable information. Are there any known health problems in their lines? Most responsible breeders will be able to tell you that they care for all of their dogs and even give them regular check-ups and if not, this is a red flag. Visit Your Georgia Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find a responsible breeder, it is important to do some research. A decent Boxer breeder should be more than willing to tell you about themselves and their dogs. When you visit your Georgia boxer breeder in person, look for cleanliness and organization of the house or kennel. The area should not have any bad odors, and the puppies should appear healthy with shiny coats and bright eyes. They may be very active, which is normal but if they seem lethargic this could be an indication of illness or improper nutrition. It is also recommended that you ask for references from previous customers as well as veterinarians who have seen these dogs before. This will help ensure that you make a good investment when looking for a Boxer puppy. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Georgia Once you have found a breeder that meets the previous criteria, it is time to ask for references. A responsible Boxer Breeder will be able to provide any information about their dogs that you request. Ask them if you can speak with past customers of theirs so that you can find out how they were trained and cared for as well as the personality of these dogs. This way, you are making sure that this potential dog is right for your family before you make any final decisions. References can also be found online. If you find nothing, this may be a red flag since anyone can put anything on the internet. Make sure to contact them directly instead of through their website or Facebook page to avoid scams or other dishonest sellers who use these outlets for marketing purposes only. This allows you to get a more honest opinion about the breeder and their dogs without worrying about repercussions later on. We all know that there is little recourse for unsatisfied customers but rest assured knowing that these people will not hesitate to give you an honest answer if given permission to speak freely. Meeting past customers will also give you a better idea of what type of dog they have put into your family. Meeting the previous owners allows you to look for certain traits in a potential puppy, such as energy levels or age appropriateness. Another good way to find out about your breeder is to ask them if they have a veterinarian that they use for their dogs. A responsible boxer breeder should be able to provide you with this information without hesitation since taking care of their animals is important to them. If the Boxer Breeder does not have any sort of medical history available about their lines, this might be a red flag. If they are unwilling or unable to answer these questions, this could also mean that they are hiding something from you or do not know the answers themselves. These individuals may be backyard breeders or puppy mill owners who are looking to make a quick buck and care little about the health of their animals or their customers. A few signs that your Georgia Boxer Breeder is unethical include: They Do Not Have References: If you ask your breeder if they can provide any references from past buyers and they refuse, this could mean several things; Either they do not know how to get in touch with them unlikely or there is something wrong with these dogs that no one wants to talk about. Inquiring further will help you identify which it is but under either circumstance, it is best not to work with this kind of breeder. They Have Inflated Prices: Another way to spot an unethical boxer breeder is by the prices that they have listed on their dogs. If these Boxer dogs seem much more expensive than other breeders you have looked at, this might be a sign that something is wrong with them. This could involve health issues or genetics, but it is likely just a scheme to get more money from you without putting in the proper amount of time and care into these animals. Very Little Information about Their Breeding Program: Ethical and good Dog Breeders will do everything that they can to supply you with as many details about their breeding program as possible. They want you to feel safe and comfortable knowing what types of treatments the dog will receive and what they will be born into. There is no excuse not to provide you with this information; if your Boxer Breeder does not, then move on to another one. If you want a full-bred Boxer dog, make sure that you tell them before you purchase the animal. Many responsible breeders ask their customers for preferences when it comes to the age or sex of their dogs so that they can match up your needs with the right puppy. Responsible breeders will not only be able to answer this question, but they should also be able to provide you with information on what type of issues other puppy owners have experienced. If the breeder claims that all of their Boxer Dogs are healthy, then you should push for further explanation. If none of the puppies or adults have any medical concerns then that should be something that makes you feel safe. However, if there were previous owners who dealt with anything severe in the past, this information should still be available somewhere. This can include genetic conditions or simply problems with allergies or skin rashes. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy When you look at a breed as hearty as the Boxer, it can be easy to underestimate how much work and time this dog will need to be happy and healthy. However, if treated properly and cared for well by their owners, these dogs can make excellent pets; which is why it is so important that you take the following steps before bringing your pup home: The biggest thing that you want to do before you bring your Boxer home is to make sure that the living conditions are appropriate for this breed. You will want to have a large, fenced-in yard where your dog can move around freely and play. If you live in an apartment or condo, then it may be time to start looking into other options; Boxers need room to run which cannot be provided adequately in these types of environments. Another important thing that needs to be prepared is the area where your puppy will sleep at night. Not only should it be isolated from any drafts or cold air, but it should also provide warmth during the winter months. Be sure to look into buying bedding or blankets specifically designed for dogs if necessary. Your Boxer will also require training as soon as possible. This breed is known for having extremely high intelligence, but it does not come naturally to them; you will need to work hard to train your Boxer Puppy and give them boundaries that they can grow up comfortably within. You should start this process as early as possible so that it becomes second nature by the time your pup turns into an adult and needs more rules and regulations than just potty training. Potty Training Your New Boxer Puppy The most important thing that you need to teach your new Boxer is how to use the potty appropriately. You do not want to deal with any accidents in the house, and making sure they are trained properly will ensure that this does not happen. The best way to accomplish this is through crate training; it may be a very foreign concept for many owners, but it is also one of the most effective methods when it comes to house-breaking puppies. It is recommended that you put your Boxer Puppy into a crate at night while you sleep and then carefully take them out first thing in the morning so that they can use the bathroom right away. Do not allow them too much time without being taken just before bed because they might make a mistake in your absence. Another important step that you should take is to keep your puppy on a strict schedule; this means taking them out for walks regularly and making time every few hours to play with them, feed them, and then let them use the bathroom once more. This will ensure that they do not have accidents inside of the house because their body will be used to getting into the habit of relieving themselves outside. You need to make sure that there are no areas where they can get injured or choke on something by accident. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. Chance was an owner surrender to the animal shelter and was in rough shape. Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care.
