Golden Retriever Rescue of New Mexico is a c 3 nonprofit. We have been in business for more than 25 years and have successfully placed more than Goldens. We are here to help dogs find loving homes and to help you find a perfect match. We work hard to make sure that you have a dog that suits your family and your lifestyle. Here is the process for getting a dog: Fill out our adoption application by clicking here. The application system is very reliable. Your application goes straight into a spreadsheet that we use to consider what dogs might be good for you. You will receive a confirmation when your application posts to the database. Join our email list to hear about our dogs. The signup is near the bottom of the page. We use the list to let people know about new dogs. If you are interested in a dog posted on the list, come check the website for a photo and description and then email. What matters is whether the family is right for the dog. Check to see currently available dogs. Click on the link to the right that says Dogs to see who is ready for a home. We may have dogs that are not yet posted on the site. They are learning social skills, or waiting for spay and neuter surgery, and they are in the evaluation phase where we learn their temperaments and personalities. It is hard to say what dogs we will have a given time. We do have a long waiting list. Adoptions are done by considering the best match for the dog and the family, so where you are on the list numerically is not what counts. Please note that the listing may indicate our having 3 dogs, but the software is counting these paragraphs. This is not fancy, nor endowed. We rely on the generosity of your donations. This is a small group of people who love working together. We collaborate in scouting the state for Goldens, in providing transportation, in doing daily care that means feeding everyone and picking up the poops , fostering, rehab, socializing, training, vet care, assessment, matchmaking, and devotion. The dogs come in hurt, scared, sick, fat, skinny, neurotic, phobic, anxious, no haired, massive haired, lost, confused, not knowing what to do or be. And we heal them, love them, socialize them, get them healthy and figure out the very best home for them. We do have a waiting list. We place dogs by match rather than your place in line. The more information you provide in your application, the better we can match. What we care most about is your ability to provide a loving home suited for your dog. Be honest and share as much as you can about the particularities of your household. If you really want a couch potato, tell us. If you love seniors or dogs with special needs, tell us. If you run 5 miles a day and want a triathlete to run with you, tell us that too. Please join our email list. When I put up a new dog, I also send a notice to the email list. Subscribe to our group We are always looking for foster homes. Foster parents have first priority in adopting dogs so you might want to consider fostering while you are waiting for your doggie to arrive. Generally speaking, we do not place dogs out of state. If you have not submitted an application, we will not talk to you about a specific dog. We have answers. Check out our other picks for best quality and value wire dog crates. Wire dog crates are possibly the most used, the most commonly seen and generally speaking what people think of when you mention a dog crate. They come with a single door as standard, but some models have multiple doors side and roof for greater access. Advantages of Wire Crates: Very easy to keep clean. Allows the greatest airflow of all crate styles which is particularly nice in hotter climates. Many models fold flat for portability. Can come with divider panels for adjusting the crate size to suit a growing puppy. Most models have a slide out tray for ease of cleaning. Disadvantages of Wire Crates For some dogs, instead of comforting them being able to look around and see the family, the visibility can cause whining and stress. Some dogs are best covered over…but you can of course cover a wire crate. Can feel exposed, offering little shelter in colder climates. They may be collapsible for portability, but they can also be quite heavy! The noisiest of crates when dogs move around a lot. The easiest of crates to escape from for determined and intelligent dogs. Plastic Dog Crates Check out our picks of the best plastic travel crates. Plastic dog crates are the most often used for travel, particularly air travel. Advantages of Plastic Crates Lighter and hence more portable than wire, metal ones. Bottom of crate can sometimes be used as an open dog bed if the crate is no longer wanted. More sheltered, offering better insulation in colder climates Better for those that whine and cry if they can see activity and want to be a part of it. Less visibility better for easily distracted dogs and a greater feeling of security for a dog. More difficult than most wire crates for escape artists to get out of. Disadvantages of Plastic Crates Enclosed nature can stress some dogs who prefer visibility of their surroundings cure this with crate training! Harder to clean and therefore harder to keep fresh, and plastic can hold odors over time that become hard to eliminate. Cannot fold flat so need more storage space than wire crates. Reduced ventilation can cause overheating in places with a hot climate. Not very attractive, although people have different tastes. Way more practical for travelling types too, as can be folded flat and and weigh next to nothing, making them a highly portable option. Advantages of Soft-Sided Crates Extremely light and portable, most coming with a carry bag. Extremely easy to store when not being used and folded. Soft and flexible, they are more comfortable for the dog inside compared to most crates Great to use when out camping due to being extremely easy to put up and take down. Disadvantages of Soft-Sided Crates Not the most durable and long-lasting. Destructive dogs can literally claw and chew their way out, destroying the crate in the process. Some dogs can learn how to unzip and open the doors. Stylish Dog Crates Check out our list of of high quality, stylish, wooden furniture style crates. There are many styles of crate to suit those people who simply cannot stand the look of a wire or plastic one in their home, or are looking for something a little more stylish. There are crates made from rattan or a variety of finished wood crates available. Advantages of Wooden Crates Can more easily fit into the look of a home and its decor. Can double up as a shelf or end table to offer a usable surface. Huge number of styles available. Disadvantages of Wooden Crates Not good for destructive dogs who can really damage wooden crates. Not good for the house training process as any accidents will leave stains, possibly hard to remove odors and be hard to clean thoroughly. Expensive when compared to the others! In my opinion, until your dog is house trained and completely over their destructive chewing stage, the most practical crate is without doubt a collapsible wire type dog crate. You can see our pick of the best collapsible wire crates available by clicking here. Compared to other styles, a wire crate is by far the easiest to clean if there are any accidents, are highly durable and is the only one that cannot be damaged by the scratching and chewing of a destructive dog…and many Labradors love to scratch and chew! Recommended Crates By Us! With so many crates available to choose from, making the right choice is no easy task. These are the most popular crates with the highest feedback and most satisfied customers you can find. Quality and value proven by the feedback from many, many previous buyers: My Top Recommendation For US Readers: Midwest Life Stages Dog Crate This is — in my opinion — the best value for money crate available and with extremely good customer feedback to be found all over the web, many would agree. This is one crate you should definitely shortlist and compare to any others you may be considering. It would be extremely hard to better value in the UK for the money, so is definitely one to consider! But if you have a puppy, buy a crate for the size of adult dog they will grow to become and use a divider to reduce the size of this larger crate to suit them. For Labrador Retrievers this will be a 36 or inch crate. A stainless steel wire crate is the most practical and best value choice for a number of reasons as detailed above. But for transporting in a car or by air, a plastic crate would be the best choice. If you can afford to, I would suggest a permanent metal wire one for the home and a plastic one for travel. For those that would like to preserve an overall look to their house there are many stylish finished wood crates available and I think these can really look good in some houses. Material This is a polyester product, which is great for moving Labrador puppies. In theory, you can use this crate even as a dog home as long as your puppy is young, but that would make it harder for your Labrador to accept a metal crate later on. The harder potions of this crate are made of PVC, which is sturdier than polyester but is a nightmare to clean. Other Features While the product will last a much shorter while than its metal counterparts, it does present its own advantages. The key features include the breathability of polyester, lack of stimuli, and a fleece pet bed. It is pretty easy to carry and comes with a strap to help manage this. Convenience With this product, the convenience is dictated entirely by how well-trained your dog is. This travel crate defies that principle and presents a spacious way of housing your Labrador on your travels. Material This crate incorporates both metal and plastic, which is great for travel but inconvenient for home use. Opaque plastic on the side reduces this stimulation, while the metal wire window keeps your dog from feeling claustrophobic. The crate dimensions stand at 48 inches x 32 inches x 35 inches, comparable and even more spacious than many metal options. Instead, you should compare it to other portable options. The plastic sides are better than polyester panels commonly used in travel crates. The metal wire window alongside the ventilation holes at the back allows air to circulate properly. It features metal bars and a wooden roof, panels, and flooring. Material The product features wood which can be a concerning aspect because of the rivalry between dogs and wooden posts. However, this is plastic wood and is not as scratchable. According to the manufacturer, the wood is non-toxic and recycled. The stainless steel bars are obviously strong enough to make sure the crate boundaries are actual boundaries and not suggestions like they are with travel crates. Size The crate is .With a .Other Features The only prominent feature is the style and aesthetic appeal of this crate. While most crates look like jailhouses, this one looks like a luxurious house arrest destination. It comes in black, white, grey, espresso, and russet colors, of which I only knew three. Espresso is a fancy way of saying brownish-grey and russet, reddish-brown. This variety allows you to pick the crate that complements your furniture. Convenience Despite looking like a complicated piece of carpentry, the crate is easy to assemble and requires no tools. It also doubles as furniture making it more convenient for you to make room for the crate, especially if you live in a studio apartment. All in all, I love the look of this crate and the great choice of colors which will fit any decor. You can also use it as an effective time-out during training. Material The playpen is made of materials not disclosed by manufacturers, but I can convey it best by describing the feel. The exterior of this water-proof playpen feels like canvas, while the bottom feels like the outside of a tent. The material is sturdy but is no match to plastic or metal. Size This is one of the most spacious items on this post because it serves a different purpose. It is not meant to be the sleeping place of a dog or a traveling carry-case. It gives an inspiring environment for your Labrador and spans 61 inches in length and breadth across its octagonal shape and 30 inches in height. Other Features and Convenience The product comes with a carry mechanism that makes it look like a large laptop bag and features outer pockets and even a water bottle holder. Best Metal Playpen MidWest Homes for Pets Foldable Metal Playpen Click HERE to check the latest price on Amazon This product brings together the spaciousness of the previous option with the sturdiness of the first item in this post, making the perfect environment for your Labrador to relax or play within a relatively confined space. I love this idea as it gives your Lab loads more room whilst keeping him in a safe environment and allowing a positive experience. Material This playpen features metal wire panels and has an open top and bottom. In other words, the flooring could be grass or carpet, depending on the place where you assemble the playpen. Size Each panel is 24 inches wide, and there are eight panels. You can determine the width of the playpen by assembling the panels closely or even attaching extra panels. Convenience The most convenient thing about this playpen is that it takes your hands off of babysitting your dog. This also is the thing you must be most concerned about because leaving your Lab in his playpen for extended periods might make it easier for you to slack off on your responsibility to socialize with your best friend, take him out on walks, and play with him. Labradors need a inch-size crate, so their size is well-accommodated in it. The crate should also be 27 inches tall at minimum, so the dog can safely stand without hitting his head and 28 inches wide so that he can move around, lie on his side, and comfortably stretch out his paws. The best crate size for a Labrador puppy is 42 inches. A wire crate with a divider is perfect as you can start your pup off in a small enough space by setting the divider a few inches away from his full length and continue to adjust as the dog grows. This also speeds up potty training. Which Crate Should I Pick? Labradors are very social and strong enough to rip apart delicate boundaries that cordon them off from their favorite pastime: playing with people. Related Posts You May Like:. From potty training to behavioral training , a new dog owner has a ton of responsibilities—sometimes more than they can keep up with. Crate training benefits both you and your dog in significant ways. There are more dog crates for sale than you can count, and they come in all different shapes and sizes. Here are some of the top benefits of crate training your lab: Benefit 1. Dog Crates are Cozy and Relaxing Labs love their crate because they offer a safe place to rest, relax, and sleep. Image Source Some labs feel so attached to their crates, they may choose to eat their food inside or halfway in and out. For you, this can also reduce the stress of dealing with anxious dogs. Benefit 2. So here is one of the best training tips: crate your lab puppies to help them become house trained. A crate can help a puppy remain within a smaller area. Benefit 3. Essentially, having labs feel comfortable in their crate gives you options when it comes to transportation, house training, calming a stressed dog, and so much more. Buy an Adult Crate and Section It Off Crate size is really important because adult labs need to be able to get into the crate and turn around. There should be enough space for them to do this, but no more. This is also why a divider can give labs the right fit and adapt to their growth. Besides these tips, all you need to figure out is the size of your lab. Your lab might be taller when sitting upright than he is standing on all fours, so have your dog sit on its behind and look up towards you. Four Types of the Best Dog Crates In addition to different dog crate sizes, you can choose different builds that might suit your lab depending on their age and rambunctious nature. Image Source Type 1. Wire Crate Wire dog crates are the most popular type of dog crate and their construction makes them quite durable. The wire design allows for air to circulate around your pet, which can help cut down on odors. They also allow for handy slide-bolt latches that let you quickly open and close the crate while keeping it secured. Wire dog crates are best for a puppy that is extremely active. The wire construction allows your dog to look out of the crate and see what is going on around him. This is best for dogs that like to be able to see what is going on. Type 2. Plastic Crate The main advantage of plastic dog crates is the fact that they are lighter than metal wire ones. This makes them very portable and easy to move around. You can move them from one part of the house to another depending on where you want the dog to sleep. Plastic crates are often made of high-quality polyurethane, which makes them easy to clean and sanitize. This usually means buying plastic products with a carry handle. Many plastic dog crates have a divider panel, which can be taken out to enlarge the crate and create more room for a growing pup or adult dog. One of the advantages of using plastic dog crates is that they can be used for several different purposes. For example, the bottom of the crate can be used as an open dog bed if the crate is no longer wanted. Type 3. Type 4. Wooden Dog Crate Wooden crates are a great way to get the functionality of a metal crate, but with the luxury appeal of nice wooden furniture. Of course, this is also a much more eco-friendly material than metal. Wood is porous and absorbs urine which means that if your dog has an accident while in the crate, the pee will soak into the wood and leave a stain. You also need to factor in the amount of space in your home and how well you can travel with your crate. Each type of crate comes with its pros and cons. Buying the right size crate is only one of many steps in responsible labrador ownership , so make sure to check out our other training tips for raising a labrador puppy to give your new best friend a long, healthy, content, and happy life. Share on. Playpens and baby gates The right crate for you will not necessarily be the same as it is for me. Dog Crate Sizes Picking the right dog crate size is very important. An appropriately sized crate should have room for your dog to stand up and turn around comfortably. He should be able to stretch out and relax, and lay down on his side if this is his preferred sleeping position. However, it should not be much larger than the amount of space required to do these things. The reason for this is if you choose a crate which is too big you increase the risk of your dog using a part of it as a toilet, as they will not see the entire dog cage as their nest. If you are unsure by eye which is the right sized crate, then you can always measure your dog. To get the right length simply measure your Labrador when he or she is standing up. Take a note of their length and height as shown in this diagram. To calculate the dimensions of your required crate simply add 4 inches onto the length and 2 inches onto the height. Most show bred or chunky adult Labradors will be best suited to a 42 inch dog crate, but it really does depend so base it on your own Labs actual size and not what size you think he should be. For a Labrador puppy of 8 weeks to around 5 months old a 24 inch crate will be sufficient to give them enough space. But keep a close watch, as some pups grow faster than others and if they start to look cramped move them up a size sooner. Remember, for a growing puppy you can create the correct crate size from a larger crate using a divider. Expanding it as they develop. However you can of course buy a separate crate for your puppy to use when they are small. Puppy Crate When your puppy is little, you may like to choose a temporary crate which will fit them for the first few months. The downside of this option is that you will need to replace the crate with a larger one as they grow. It is entirely up to you personally whether you choose this method, however it is worth mentioning that Labs often chew until they are 18 months to 2 years old. This means that they will be adult sized but still benefit from having somewhere to be left where they will not cause damage when unsupervised. There are some good reasons that people choose to have another separate dog cage for their puppy even when they intend to crate the dog for the first couple of years of their life. Whilst a puppy is small you do not have to have such a large area of the house dominated by a big dog cage. You can also choose a cheaper or less stylish option, as it does not need to last as long. Small Crates A separate puppy cage can also help your new pup to feel more secure when you bring them home. A large crate divided gives the impression of a big space, rather than a cosy little den your pup can snuggle up in. It is easier to make a smaller crate feel safe and homely for your new friend. One of the UKs most popular crate brands is Ellie-Bo. The Ellie-Bo puppy folding, double door crate comes in a black, gold or silver finish so you can pick your preferred option. It is sturdy, chew proof and easy to move around, weighing just 5kg. The downside of the Ellie-Bo crate line is that they are only available in the UK. If you are in the US there are lots of similar options, and our favourite is this very similar puppy crate from MidWest. If you are looking for something with a bright cheerful color, then check out the Aspen Puppy Crate. It comes in a blue or pink finish, both of which are great fun. They also have all of the practical aspects of the other crates covered, in terms of the ability to fold down and sturdy construction. This crate does come with a divider, but you are unlikely to need it for a Lab sized pup. Large Dog Crate — 36 inches If your Labrador is from working lines or has a slighter build, then he is likely to need a Large sized crate. These will be around 36 inches in length, with slightly varying heights and widths. We have tried a few dog crates over the years. Here in the UK our absolute favourite brand is Ellie-Bo. They last a long time, they are very durable and easy to clean. The crate trays are also chew proof. For a large Labrador we recommend getting this model. It measures 26 inches high by 36 inches long by 24 inches wide. In the USA the most well reviewed and popular model is a very similar type of crate produced by the MidWest brand. It has all the benefits of the Ellie-Bo model including double doors and great durability. They measure a practically identical 27 inches high by 36 inches long by 24 inches wide. Extra Large Dog Crate — 42 inches For bigger, often show bred Labradors, you may well want to get an extra large dog crate. As with the large crates it is probably sensible to go with a well known and approved of brand. It is durable and secure to keep your extra large dog safe in his den. It also has double doors like the large version. This model measures 31 inches high by 42 inches long by 28 inches wide. It is durable, secure, and made of a sturdy practical structure. This crate measures 31 inches high by 42 inches long by 28 inches wide. Dog Crate Divider If you decide to buy a large or extra large crate from the beginning, you have the option of separating the space for your young puppy using a divider. Some crates can be brought with dividers, others are available to buy as single items. If you are buying a different brand of divider then make sure that you check measurements carefully before you order it. Wooden Dog Crates When choosing your dog crate, you may well want to have one that fits nicely in amongst your furniture. A great way to get a dog crate that looks good as well as having all the function of a metal crate is to choose a wooden one. It is also designed to be as easy to clean as possible. It works well as a coffee table too! This pretty yet sturdy crate comes in a large size so would fit many adult Labradors. Fully Wired The Pet Crate and Gate by Merry also has a wooden structure, but with metal bars and a plastic crate tray. Although this means that it is not quite as pretty as the previous model, it is perhaps more convenient for cleaning. It also has the added bonus of converting into a pet gate when not in use as a crate. Fortunately, there are several ways to go about finding a cheap dog crate that will do the job just as well. Free Dog Crates Make sure before you begin searching for cheap crates that you have looked into the free options. The freecycle website is great for finding items that people just want to get rid of to clear up some space. Also, have a quick word with any friends who have adult dogs if you are looking for a puppy crate. They might have one that their dog has grown out of, which they are glad to be rid of. Cheap Dog Crates If you need to buy a crate but want to save money, then looking for them second hand is a good bet. Although you will find crates on eBay and similar online auction sites, they can go up in price rapidly near the end of the auction so make sure that you know your limits before you start bidding higher. Choose your top point, and wait until 30 seconds before the auction ends to enter it into the bidding box for the best chance to win. Alternatively, consider cheaper options of the crate style you desired. Although double door dog crates can be very useful, you could consider looking at single door crates to save money. Just make sure you measure up and can definitely open the door in your desired location before you buy. This single door crate from MidWest has a lower price tag than some of the equivalent double door models. There are a few different varieties out there, and these are our top picks from each category. Car Crates Wire car crates are very popular, as they are of a similar construction to the indoor dog cages but with a sloped side which allows them to fit into the back of most estates. When you are choosing a crate for your car make sure that is big enough to comfortably accommodate your dog , but check the measurements carefully to ensure that it will also fit into the car itself. I recommend getting the tape measure out and checking the size of your car before you look. Remember to account for the slope of the rear window if it has one. It is sturdy, durable and even comes with a fleece to go over the plastic tray. Sadly, at present these are only available in the UK from this manufacturer. However there is a different option in the US which looks really good too. It is built in a similar shape to fit into the back of the car, but structured differently with thicker bars. If you are travelling by plane, then you will need a different type of travel crate. Flight Crates Plastic dog crates are a great choice for Labradors when flying. Although soft dog carriers are available they are not ideal for bigger breeds, as they are potentially less secure and harder to move about. This plastic dog crate is designed to hold a dog up to 90lbs in weight and is a comfortable length for most Labs at 39 inches long. You will want a travel crate for air travel to be snug just as an indoor dog crate is, but in this case it is even more important for helping the dog have a sense of security in his unusual surroundings. Dog Playpens Dog crates are brilliant beds for dogs, and a nice way to keep them secure in the home when you cannot supervise them as well as when travelling. They are however not suitable for leaving a dog in for long periods of time, as they do not provide anywhere for them to stretch their legs or relieve themselves. A great alternative option for securing your puppy in a more free manner, is to invest in a puppy playpen. These are especially useful when your Labrador is small and still inclined to chewing or messing in the house. Our favourite puppy playpens are those which are sturdy, durable and easy to use. It folds flat for storage or transportation, and provides a secure area for your puppy to play in outdoors or indoors. Alternatively, you could look at a sturdy plastic option. This Indoor and Outdoor Playpen from Iris gives a secure place for your puppy to play. It is easy to assemble and comes in a range of fun colours. Dog and baby gates Sometimes what you need is a barrier rather than a crate. This puppy is a member of your family. Happy puppies are puppies that are not constantly in trouble. Not being scolded, not eating dubious household items, electrocuting themselves, or getting their tails accidentally slammed in doors. Happy puppies have a nice place to sleep, a safe place to play not far from a door to their toilet area, enough to eat and approving humans to tell them how great they are. New puppies may be family members, but your puppy is a family member with very poor bladder control, no knowledge of the English language, and a terrible memory. Keeping him off your carpets for a few weeks is just common sense. In general baby gates are not beautiful things. But the situation is temporary, and if it really bothers you there are some nicer though more expensive options available. Including black metal gates , dark wooden gates and even bamboo gates. Once your puppy can control his bladder to some extent, and is beginning to understand some family rules, you can gradually extend the parts of the house he has access to. What type of gate should I buy? A standard baby gate will suffice for a Labrador puppy. I use plain white metal baby gates. These are fairly cheap and very practical. If you want to fit one into a space wider than a doorway you can also buy extender panels or a wider baby gate to fit the gap. If you are adopting an older dog, or if you want to permanently restrict your dog from part of the house and there is no reason why you should not do so if it suits you then you may want to buy a taller baby gate. An adult Labrador is perfectly capable of jumping a standard baby gate. Though many will not attempt to if it has always been there. Setting up the baby gates The best location for your gates depends on the layout of your house. I use them to keep puppies confined to an area that includes part of the hall access to stairs is blocked the kitchen and utility room. With access to the back garden. At the very least, you should gate your stairs so that the puppy cannot run up and down them, or have unsupervised access to bedrooms. When can I take them my puppy gates down? Once your puppy has grasped the concept of toileting outdoors without you constantly having to watch him. Once he can last a couple of hours between bathroom breaks, you can start to introduce him to carpeted rooms. Let him in there for twenty minutes or so, immediately after a successful bathroom break, and before his mealtime. This is the time he is least likely to have an accident. Build up the amount of time he is allowed access to the new room little by little. Remember that success breeds success when it comes to house training. Accidents are likely to be repeated because puppies like to pee where there is already the smell of pee. And it is nearly impossible to remove urine from carpets so thoroughly that a dog cannot smell it. If your puppy loves to chew things, you might also want to take a look at our guide to indestructible dog beds! Dogs love having a small den to sleep in, and once trained, will find comfort in tucking themselves away in a crate. But Labs come in many different shapes and sizes, and grow quickly as a pup. Benefits of Crating a Dog There are many benefits to using a crate for a new puppy or dog. Safe Sleep and Relaxation Space A crate offers a safe space for your dog to relax and rest in. This is the most important use of a crate and should be your first priority when crate training. House training your puppy will be significantly easier if they are confined to a small space. Puppies innately know not to eliminate in their sleeping area. Using this innate knowledge to your advantage can mean only a few days of accidents in the house. This avoids them chewing on furniture or getting into kitchen cupboards. Labs are an intelligent breed who love to chew. They will quickly work out how to open kitchen cupboards and help themselves to your food. This space is only safe if you have correctly and fully trained your Lab to be relaxed and calm in the crate. Ensure you read over our crate training guide before you attempt to secure your Lab inside the crate. Preparing for Future Travel If you plan on traveling with your dog in the future, then it is wise to crate train them while they are young. This will minimize the stress they feel when they are inside a crate. If they are familiar with sleeping in a crate, they will be able to relax. Dogs will be put into crates at the vets if they ever need surgery or an overnight stay. Again, you can minimize their stress by crate training from day one. Untrained or nervous dogs are a danger to themselves inside a crate. Crating can cause a welfare issue if the dog is stressed inside it. However, most puppies and dogs will get used to and even enjoy the crate once they are trained. What Size Crate for a Lab? As a general rule, your Lab should be able to stand up fully, turn around and lay outstretched in the crate, without too much spare room. Depending upon the individual Lab, they can vary in height and weigh between lbs. Males will be on the larger side and dogs from the showing line will be bigger than working Labs. Measuring Up Since your Lab needs enough room to move around, you can measure them to see exactly what size crate they need. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while they are standing. Add 4 inches to this measurement. Also, measure from the floor to the top of their head while sitting. Add 2 inches to this measurement. This will give them enough room to move around, but not too much room to do themselves any harm. It is easy to set up and comes with roller feet to protect your flooring. The plastic tub style base will contain any accidents and is easily washable. Depending on the size of your Lab, purchase a inch crate or inch crate with the divider. A divider is good for puppies, as you can make the crate space as big or as small as you need to. We recommend the extra-large size to contain an adult Labrador. This would not be suited to young Labs that still chew. What Size Car Crate for a Labrador? Your Lab will need the same sized car crate. They should be able to move around in the crate comfortably, without extra space. If you plan on having the crate in the trunk of your car, you will likely require an SUV or truck as crates take up a lot of space. Crates vs Playpens for Lab Puppies I always use a full sized adult crate with a divider for my puppies. It saves a lot of time and hassle. If you need to confine your puppy or dog to an area for extended periods of time, then it is best to use a playpen instead of a crate. A Lab will require a inch playpen to keep them contained. Playpens can be used indoors and outdoors to keep your dog contained. If you want an even larger contained space, purchase 2 or 3 playpens of the same brand and size and join them together. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. Leave a Reply Your email address will not be published. Read on, and learn more. Take things slowly. Drop some treats or a toy in the crate to encourage it to go in, and encourage your pup as it goes in. Do this for a few days, until your dog is willing to go all the way into the crate. Once your dog will go into its crate willingly, you can lock the door behind your Labrador, and leave in there for a few minutes at a time, as it gets used to the crate. Over the next few days, you can start leaving your dog in its crate for longer periods of time, working up to multiple hours. Feed your dog its meals in the crate — This is a great next step after introducing your dog to the crate. Put its food and water in the crate, and lock the door behind your Labrador as it eats. But over time, you can leave it closed for a longer period of time, as your dog gets used to its crate. It will begin to associate negativity with its crate, which can impair the crate training process. You may also want to use a crate cover to darken the environment, as some Labradors prefer a dark area where they can nap. The same thing is true of arriving home. Doing this will help ensure that your dog does not associate being crated with being left alone. Crating will just become part of its day-to-day routine, not a sign of abandonment. Take a look at these common FAQs about Labrador crates now. How long should I crate train my Labrador puppy at night? When your puppy is less than 9 weeks old, you should let it out of its crate to go potty about every 3 hours at night. As your puppy gets older and reaches weeks of age, it will be able to hold its bladder more effectively, so you can stretch this to a single break after about 4 hours after it goes to sleep. Once your puppy reaches 12 weeks, it should be able to get through the whole night without an accident, but you should work up to this slowly, to ensure your dog gets used to sleeping through the whole night without a potty break. Collars can get caught on metal bars in crates, and pose a strangulation risk. For that reason, you should never let your dog wear the collar while it is being crated. Is crating inhumane or bad for my dog? Not at all! Crating is a great way to housebreak your dog. When you crate-train your dog properly, it will think of its crate as a cozy bedroom or den where it can feel safe and relax. However, crating can be bad for your dog if you do it wrong. Your dog should not be locked up for more than 8 hours at most. Dogs, just like people, are not meant to spend their whole lives confined to a little room! Is it better to buy multiple crates, or a crate with a divider? Then, you can use a divider to create a properly-sized area for your puppy, and expand it as your dog grows. This will save you a lot of money, compared to buying multiple crates as your dog grows. It also helps your dog get used to its crate, which is more difficult if you are swapping out each crate every few months. Can I train an older Labrador to use a crate? Of course! The Cocker Spaniel may also experience hip and elbow dysplasia like the Golden Retriever. This breed has a life expectancy of 12 — 15 years. Keep in mind that the following information is based on its parent breeds. These are all predictions that vary from case to case depending on genetic makeup. In terms of physical appearance, the Cocker Spaniel comes in a variety of coat colors, so the forever puppy may not always be golden. It could be a mix of blue, black, brown, and white. The ideal attributes a Golden Cocker Retriever should have is a medium-length coat, floppy ears, and a smaller build than the Golden Retriever. We can predict the height of the Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel mix will range from 20 to 24 inches 51 — 61 cm. As we mentioned above its weight will range from 30 to 45 pounds 13 — 20 kg. The health concerns of a Golden Cocker Retriever are also based on its parents. Both the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel are capable of experiencing seizures associated with epilepsy and hip and elbow dysplasia. On the Cocker Spaniel side, however, you have more serious illnesses to worry about like glaucoma and cancerous tumors. On the bright side, both parent breeds have a good life expectancy, so your Golden Cocker Retriever will live a long and happy life of at least 10 years! Want to see how this mix grows up? For owners who really want a teacup-sized Golden Cocker Retriever, there are some toy ones on the market. And then you mix it once again with Cocker Spaniel to get an even smaller dog. A dog with dwarfism may look cute and small but it causes them a lot of pain throughout their entire lives. The height of a standard Goldendoodle reaches 20 inches 50 cm. The weight ranges from 50 — 90 pounds 22 — 40 kg. Additionally, the coat of a Goldendoodle will be much curlier than the Golden Cocker Retriever thanks to its Poodle parent breed. Before buying one, consider if a Golden Cocker Retriever is your best match in the long run. How will this dog fit into your daily schedule and hobbies? Does This Mix Shed? Both parent breeds have long-haired coats that invite moderate to heavy shedding throughout the year. Do I Need A Backyard? Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES. Purebred Golden Retrievers sometimes need two sessions. A fenced backyard or a playpen is also essential to keep your Golden Cocker Retriever from wandering off. Both parent breeds have a long history of being hunting dogs with a strong prey-drive. If your Golden Cocker Retriever sees or smells a small animal in the distance, it will run as quickly as it can to track it down. Dogs are just fine. For example, any sign of stubbornness or independence can lead to harder training. Start training as early as possible as puppies are easier to handle than adults. The temperament of a Golden Cocker Retriever should be: Happy. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They are not purebreds like their Golden Retriever or Cocker Spaniel parents. The mixed breed does shed, so aim to brush the coat daily if possible, being on the lookout for any potential mats. Golden Cocker Retrievers usually have no problems getting along with kids. This is a gentle and playful mixed breed that will happily become play buddies with your children This is not a dog who does well being left alone for long periods of the day. But digging into the background of their parent breeds can tell you a lot about where the dog comes from. Developed in Scotland, the Golden Retriever has always been renowned for their high intelligence and ability to take on agility and obedience-based tasks. When it comes to the Cocker Spaniel, this breed comes from Spain where they began as a hunting dog with a special expertise at tracking down and startling fowl. The Golden Cocker Retriever has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. As is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 30 to 45 pounds and range in height from 20 to 24 inches. A total family dog, the mixed breed will quickly form loving bonds with the humans in their life—and will also very much want to be in on the act with any day-to-day tasks and activities. This is not a dog who does well being left alone for long periods of the day. Even better, at the end of a long day of healthy outdoor action, the dog will love to cuddle up together as you relax and recuperate on the couch. Golden Cocker Retrievers usually do great around children. Golden Cocker Retriever Health Golden Cocker Retrievers are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. If you jog, bring the dog along! If you have access to a safe off-leash park, even better. If you have a safe fenced-in yard, add some interactive toys to the environment and let the breed explore and investigate. As with any dog who loves the outdoors, check that their nails are trimmed and in good shape, and examine the paw pads for any signs of damage. Doing this every two weeks should suffice. The coat is straight, medium in length, and usually described as being dense to the touch. The Golden Cocker Retriever does best in slightly warmer than usual weather. This is a gentle and playful mixed breed that will happily become play buddies with your children—just remember to make sure both parties are socialized correctly during the early days. In general, Golden Cocker Retrievers are fine around other household pets. But be sure the boundaries between the dog and existing household pets are laid down early. Ultimately, early socialization really pays off with this breed. View All Articles in Labradoodle Breeders Location Depending on your geographical location, you can expect to pay more money in certain areas. Naturally, the Labradoodle price is usually tied to the overall cost of living in that area. Of course, you might be tempted to adopt a puppy from a different state. Any of those can add a few hundred dollars to your total Labradoodle price. Breeder Stock Another factor that influences the Labradoodle cost is breeding stock. Breeding different generations of Labradoodles requires a certain set of parent dogs. For example, F1 or first-generation Labradoodles are often less expensive than F1b or F1bb Labradoodles. See Also: Click the image Demand Needless to say, the high demand can also hike up the price of Labradoodles, especially in more populated areas like major cities. The best reputable breeders have waiting lists that filled 6 months in advance, sometimes even up to a year or two. This in turn means that breeders will charge higher rates to keep up with the demand while not overbreeding the mama dogs. Size, Color, and Coat Type Another thing you should keep in mind is that certain sizes, colors, and coat types can cost you some extra money. For instance, some breeders charge more for Mini Labradoodles compared to Standard Labradoodles. Usually, the most hypoallergenic Labradoodles are found in F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb generations, which also require more genetic testing to achieve. See Also: Click the image Breeder Reputation Lastly, reputable breeders also charge premium rates for their Labradoodle puppies. Ethical, reputable breeders put a lot of time, money, and effort into breeding and raising healthy and well-rounded pups. All of this reflects in the Labradoodle price. Professional breeders have learned all about health and genetic testing. See Also: Click the image In addition to that, reputable breeders know the importance of early socialization , training, and other enrichment methods. Ethical breeders also follow breeding guidelines set by established organizations we mentioned above. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting a puppy from a professional, ethical breeder? Of course, there are many backyard breeders who have the best intentions in mind and only want to share the joy of this adorable crossbreed. However, oftentimes, these breeders might not conduct all the necessary health and genetic testing on their breeding dogs. Nor can they provide proper health guarantees for their puppies. Additionally, many backyard breeders do not choose new homes for the puppies as carefully as professional breeders. When a litter is born, they just sell all the puppies on a first come first serve basis. How much are Labradoodles when adopting from a backyard breeder? Puppy Mills Finally, we have the worst of the bunch — puppy mills. Unfortunately, these breeders only work for their own financial gain. More often than not, they neglect the wellbeing of their breeding dogs and puppies. Beware of pet stores, as well, as they often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills usually overbreed their mama dogs and keep them on tight schedules to produce more and more puppies. Meanwhile, the dogs and puppies are kept in unsafe and unclean environments, often in small cages and kennels. Moreover, these pups often come with serious health conditions. How much does a Labradoodle cost when adopting from a puppy mill? Above all, we urge you to avoid these breeders at all costs. As a general rule of thumb, larger, Standard Labradoodles require more calories per day compared to smaller, Mini and Medium Labradoodles. All of them are tried, tested, and recommended by Doodle owners. Training Training and early socialization both play a key role in raising well-rounded Labradoodles. Vet Visits One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is taking your pup to regular vet visits and wellness checks. And to be prepared for those unexpected vet visits, we recommend you choose a trustworthy pet insurance company. During the first year, you should make sure that your puppy is up to date with all of its vaccinations and preventative care for worms, fleas, ticks , and heartworm. Grooming You might already know that Labradoodles are high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and coat care. Time Investment Like any other pet, Labradoodles require a lot of time and effort from your part. Other Costs In addition to all the Labradoodle costs we mentioned above, there are other everyday items that your dog will need. These include food and water bowls, dog beds, dog crate, a collar and a leash, toys and chew toys, and poop bags. So, you know with absolute certainty that the Labradoodle is the right pup for you. But how can you find quality Labradoodle breeders? As fellow Doodle owners, we know how difficult it can be to find ethical, reputable breeders in your area. Why Are Labradoodles Expensive? Ethical Labradoodle breeders charge higher prices for their pups, as they carefully screen the breeding dogs through extensive health and genetic testing. In addition to that, they provide their clients with genetic health guarantees and implement various forms of enrichment methods when rearing the puppies. How Much Does A Labradoodle Cost: Final Thoughts Adopting a dog is not just a huge emotional commitment, but also requires you to think whether or not your finances allow you to take care of another living being. Hopefully, this article has managed to answer all of your questions about the Labradoodle cost of adoption and the ongoing costs throughout their lifetime. Avoid making the mistake of choosing the wrong Doodle temperament for your family, lifestyle, or current living situation. Allergy-Friendliness Price No Labradoodle is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic or non-shedding. However, with those positive qualities come a few drawbacks. A curlier, Poodle-like coat requires more frequent brushing and grooming. Additionally, Labradoodle generations that have a greater likelihood of being allergy-friendly and non-shedding will cost more. This is largely due to high demand for hypoallergenic and non-shedding dogs. For more information which generation you should choose, check out our complete guide to Labradoodle generations! Cost of Living Cost of living varies significantly across the United States and the world. As cost of living rises, so does the price of a Labradoodle. Depending on where you live, it may be beneficial to take a mini road trip and drive a few hours to a breeder further away. Doing so could potentially save you a substantial amount of money. What did they do to get such a good price? In some instances, they may have been given a puppy for free after someone they knew had an accidental litter. However, in most cases, the answer is they adopted a Labradoodle instead of purchasing it from a breeder. Adoption is a great option to consider. Even if you were able to find a breeder with Labradoodles for that little money, it raises a big red flag that they may not be reputable. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I also recommend you stay away from pet stores when looking at puppies. Click here to get an instant, online pet insurance quote from Healthy Paws! Color Labradoodles come in a wide variety of colors. There are solid choices like chocolate, cream, apricot, and black as well as multi-color patterns like merle, sable, tuxedo, and parti Labradoodles. In most cases, black is the least expensive Labradoodle color. However, keeping your options open to a variety of colors and choosing your future puppy based on their personality over their color is my recommendation! Reputable breeders can only supply so many puppies, so when there is an excess in demand prices can go up. One example of this occurring regularly is around the holidays. Like any other breed, Labradoodles are often gifted to children or spouses for Christmas. Because demand is so high around the holidays, many breeders increase their prices for Labradoodle puppies that are scheduled to go home in December. Why Are Labradoodles So Expensive? So, why are Labradoodles so expensive? Labradoodle prices are so expensive because poodle mixes are extremely popular due to their adorable looks and their potential to be low-shedding and allergy-friendly. Reputable Labradoodle breeders often have waitlists that extend many months into the future because they struggle to keep up with demand. You will almost certainly be asked to place a deposit for a Labradoodle puppy. This is a completely normal practice that secures your spot for a particular litter. It is extremely important that you do your research on a breeder before placing a deposit. You want to weed out puppy mills and backyard breeders before being financially committed to purchasing a puppy. Additionally, there are scammers who prey on eager Labradoodle buyers. These scammers, often found on social media, can be very convincing and use stolen photos to secure a deposit and then promptly disappear. Avoid these scams by finding trusted breeders through personal recommendations and other reputable sources. Visit them in person or at minimum have a video call to verify they are a legitimate operation with puppies available. Make sure your Labradoodle puppy has had a few essential health procedures before being sent home with you. They should at least be up to date with their first round of vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, deworming, and an overall health check by a veterinarian. Some breeders even extend this guarantee up to 2 years in length. Your Labradoodle puppy will usually be sent home with a few additional items. This often includes a small bag of food, a collar, and a toy or blanket that smells like their littermates. The smell provides them comfort during their first few days in their new home. Unfortunately that number is not even close to being accurate. A close up face image of Labradoodle puppy Max The price depends on many factors and can vary from breeder to breeder. While this might seem like a hefty price to pay for a puppy, the low prices that you find on social media or other ads are usually from puppy mills that try to over-breed these beloved animals in inappropriate and unethical ways. Low-quality living conditions notwithstanding, puppies from such places have a high probability of suffering from ailments and issues caused by genetic mutations occurring from rapid breeding. Labradoodle costs around the world In Australia the average prices for non-shedding Labradoodles ranged from AUD. There were some niche breeders that charged much more. Depending on how unique the coat color is, the price will vary. Parti-colored Labradoodles like Tuxedo Labradoodle or Phantom Labradoodle cost significantly more than a solid-colored cream, black, or gold Labradoodle. Sometimes, depending on your location, you may have to shell out extra dollars if you specifically want a multi-colored Labradoodle. Coat texture is another influencing factor. Shiny, sleek coats are more attractive and an indication of a superior bloodline. Hence, they are going to cost more. Curly and wavy-haired Labradoodles will be more expensive than straight-haired ones as they are almost non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Blue-eyed Labradoodles can be even more expensive, owing to their rarity and beauty. Labradoodle Size As they are crossbred, there are no specific breeding standards for Labradoodles. Most breeders classify Labradoodle puppy sizes as standard, medium, and miniature. Toy, teacup, miniature, and maxi are some other terms used to describe the size of Labradoodle dogs. The smaller the puppy size, the higher its price. This is because of the increased demand for smaller-sized dogs. Some breeders have their own standards and classifications when it comes to dog size and weight. While some breeders consider pound dogs as petite, others see them as miniature. Micro and petit are other terms that are used, both interchangeably and independently by different breeders. Usually, petit dogs fall in the pounds range, and micro dogs under 10 pounds. Age Typically, most people prefer buying a young puppy rather than a full-grown dog. Hence, prices are higher for puppies than dogs. For instance, a 6-month-old puppy is going to cost less than a 6-week-old one. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. Generation Type Another determining factor is the percentage of each parent breed in the Labradoodle puppy. F1B generations have a purebred Poodle and an F1 generation Labradoodle as their parents. While this is a rarer generation, they are cheaper as their chances of being hypoallergenic is lesser than that of others. Generally, F1B Labradoodles are the most expensive generation as they have the highest chance of being hypoallergenic. Location and Demand The Labradoodle breed is one of the most popular crossbreed dogs, a close second to the Goldendoodles. This has significantly increased their value and demand. Dog breeders of bigger cities will have a large client pool and higher earnings. They usually have a hard time keeping up with the demands and hence have to increase their price. Breeders from rural areas have comparatively lower demand and charge less for their puppies. Nevertheless, the demand for low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs is high everywhere, regardless of the size and popularity of a place. While it might be cheaper to buy your Labradoodle puppy from a rural breeder, you might still have to beat your budget to travel the extra distance or to have the puppy transferred to you. Although the low prices advertised at puppy mills might be tempting, getting a Labradoodle puppy from a reputed breeder is always a better option. Besides being spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, puppies from reputed breeders will also be appropriately socialized. This will make it easier for them to adapt to their new home. Most reputable breeders establish their prices based on their experience, investment, knowledge, credentials, and reputation with previous customers. Some breeders even incorporate training from a young age, and some puppies are potty trained at just eight weeks old. Reputed breeders also have health certificates and genetic records of both parent dogs in place. These certificates are proof that your Labradoodle is in the best of health and hygiene. Other Costs Associated With Labradoodles The preliminary cost of a Labradoodle will be substantially less than the total expenses involved throughout its life. Additionally, you might have to spend more on training foods and treats. Grooming The grooming needs of Labradoodles may vary depending on the type and length of their coat. Although Labradoodles are almost hypoallergenic, they need regular brushing and bathing. Medical Costs Most crossbreed dogs are usually less prone to ailments and diseases. Their larger gene pool also reduces their risk of inheriting diseases. One of the most common health issues with Labradoodle is hip dysplasia. And the surgical procedure to fix this is expensive, which is especially necessary for older Labradoodles. Besides this, there are other health care costs like vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups Ohio State Veterinary School source. It safeguards you against any unforeseen situations that may arise in the future with regard to its health. Training and Boarding Costs Although Labradoodles are very intelligent and highly trainable, it is advisable to enroll them in a professional training program to ensure their all-round development. It also helps address their excessive barking and jumping, which is common in Labradoodles. Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that can turn destructive when left alone for a long time. So whenever you go on trips, you will have to leave them at a doggie care center. Can Labradoodles smile? Ideally, you should purchase an adjustable crate whose length you can adjust as and when your puppy grows. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs who need toys to maintain their mental stimulation and to keep them from getting destructive due to boredom. You might also have to make a one-time investment on a good quality bed as they often tend to chew and scratch at it. Labradoodle Adoption Price While you may want to get your Labradoodle puppy from a shelter, the chances are slim as Labradoodles are highly sought-after breeds that are usually kept in tight breeding groups. This is usually done to cover the cost of medical and maintenance care. Adopting a puppy from a rescue shelter is a noble idea, but you must also prepare to deal with any possible future problems with their health and temperament, as rescue dogs usually have health and behavior problems. My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat Avoiding Disreputable Breeders The pet business has now emerged as one of the biggest industries worldwide. Unfortunately, this has also birthed unethical puppy mills, backyard breeders, and online pet stores, who have little to no knowledge about raising and nurturing puppies. Often, unsuspecting pet lovers trying to save some money fall prey to these tricks and end up with an unhealthy puppy with health and temperamental issues. This leads to them spending a lot of money on the treatment and maintenance of these puppies down the road. So, is there a way to distinguish between good and bad breeders and avoid paying exorbitant prices by accidentally supporting these puppy mills? Start by doing plenty of research on the breeder and consciously avoid backyard breeders, pet stores, and online stores. Additionally, look out for these red flags: Unusually low-priced puppies. The breeder refuses to show the living conditions of their dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are kept in harsh conditions and small cages. Puppies seem reserved, edgy, and nervous around people. The breeder has no health certificates of puppies and its parent dogs. Breeder refuses to provide any paperwork. Here are some standards and conventions practiced by trustworthy breeders: They breed puppies indoors and will take equal care of the parent dogs. They offer ample space and freedom to their puppies and dogs to run, play, sleep, and do everything they desire. They periodically clean and groom the dogs. They promote a healthy bonding of puppies with their mother and littermates. They try to gauge if you are capable of raising a particular dog breed. They offer tips and tricks on puppy care and maintenance. They have health and vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian. They offer proper legal protection like providing a guarantee for puppy replacement after around 1. Going through previous testimonials and customer reviews is another way of determining the credibility of a breeder. Find out how long the breeder has been in the business. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. If you are thinking that a Labradoodle might be a perfect addition to your family, you are right. They are friendly and intelligent dogs, and many have a low-shedding coat, which means they can be a good choice for families dealing with allergies or asthma. But exactly how much will it cost you to bring a Labradoodle home? The cost of a Labradoodle actually varies significantly depending on the specific dog and where you get it. We will go through all the things you are likely to have to pay for within the first six months of bringing the puppy home, and what you can expect to spend on the care and upkeep of your Labradoodle throughout their lives. The Cost Of Adopting A Labradoodle How much it will cost you to bring a Labradoodle into your household will vary significantly depending on where you get the puppy from. Whether you are looking for a standard Labradoodle or one of the small breeds that are the result of breeding a Labrador retriever with a miniature or toy poodle, also makes a difference, with the smaller dogs being more expensive. Why Are Labradoodles So Expensive? Labradoodles tend to be expensive because they are such desirable dogs. They are a mix of a Labrador retriever and a poodle, designed to be the perfect service dogs. Labrador retrievers have long been known as excellent working dogs because they are intelligent and motivated, which means they can be trained to complete the required tasks, and they also have a friendly and loving personality, so they know how to behave in public. This is essential when service dogs are able to enter public spaces that will be full of people, children, and other animals. However, the problem with Labradors is that they shed a lot. This means not only that they can be challenging to clean up after at home, but that they can be a health hazard in restaurants and places that need to maintain sanitary conditions, such as hospitals. Enter the poodle. Instead, the hair gets caught up in their coat and needs to be brushed out regularly. They are also highly intelligent, even more so than Labradors, which means they have a great ability to learn new tasks. They are also very loving, having been bred as companions, though they are a bit more wary of strangers than Labradors are. So the idea is that you combine a Labrador retriever and a poodle to get a Labradoodle, which has all the characteristics to work as a service dog and also has a low-shedding coat. But, since breeders are often catering to a specialist market, they do need to be careful to control for the characteristics they want. They need to be very careful to breed for the low-shedding coat since a Labradoodle naturally has an equal chance of inheriting a high-shedding Labrador coat and a friendly personality, as well as intelligence and an ability to learn. This is a lot of work for the breeder, so they charge more. The smaller pups cost even more because they are harder to breed due to the size difference between Labradors and small poodles. However, if you do come across a Labradoodle that does have the high-shedding coat of a Labrador, you might be able to get them a bit cheaper, as they will be harder to sell as service dogs. But be warned! It is almost impossible to tell whether a Labradoodle will have a low-shedding or high-shedding coat until they are at least 12 weeks old. With so much variation in the price of Labradoodles, it can be hard to know whether you are getting a good deal, or if you are being ripped off. Below are the main factors that affect the individual prices of Labradoodles and will push the price above or below the standard. These factors should help you determine whether a Labradoodle is being priced appropriately. Location Yes, just as housing costs more or less depending on where you live, the same is true of Labradoodles and all other dogs. Size As we have already said, size makes a big difference, and small Labradoodles that are the result of breeding between a Labrador retriever and either a miniature or toy poodle are significantly more expensive. This is because they are harder to breed, and they are also highly desirable pups. A mini Labradoodle can cost twice as much as a standard-sized version. Coat Type Labradoodles have three different coat types, which are classified as flat, wavy, or curly. Flat coats are most like the high-shedding coats of the Labrador, while curly coats are most like the low-shedding coats of poodles. Wavy coats fall somewhere in between. It will be no surprise to learn that curly coats are the most popular, and that dogs with these coats are more expensive. You might get a Labradoodle with a flat coat at a discount because they are shedders. This is easier to predict if you are breeding two Labradoodles that both already have the desired coat characteristics, but is very difficult to determine with first-generation Labradoodles. Coat Color Labradoodles come in a much wider range of colors than Labrador retrievers, and many of the more exotic coat colors are highly prized. Dogs like the Phantom Labradoodle and the Tuxedo Labradoodle are very coveted, and this can add significantly to the price of the dog. Breeder Reputation The fact of the matter is, when you are buying a dog from a breeder, you are putting a lot of faith into the assumption that everything they are telling you is true. They are the ones telling you that the parent pups have undergone extensive health screenings and that they have controlled for desirable characteristics. For this reason, reputation is very important among breeders, and you should always do a little bit of research on your breeder before purchasing. If you do find a good breeder with a reputation for producing happy and healthy pups, you can expect to pay more. They are at the top of the market, so they can afford to demand more money. Plus, good practice is usually more expensive to deliver. Additional Expenses When Buying A Labradoodle Puppy There are other expenses related to bringing a new puppy home beyond the price of the puppy itself. When you but a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable breeder, the price usually includes: Initial vaccination shots. Labradoodle Coat Color Since the Labradoodle is a mixed breed, a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle, you will find a great variety in its coat colors. The price of a Labradoodle is thus affected by how rare and unique a particular coat color is. Take the example of the Phantom Labradoodle or the Parti Labradoodle, or the Tuxedo Labradoodle, which are known for their attractive, multi-colored coats. These varieties thus cost significantly more than the more common, solid-colored ones that are cream or golden-brown throughout. This needs to be taken into account when you go on the search for your ideal pup. Labradoodle Coat Type When it comes to the type of coat and fur, you will come across three Labradoodle varieties. These are those with wavy, curly, or flat coats. These are indicative of the generation of the pup. On average, Labradoodles with curly or wavy coats are found to be more expensive than those with flat coats. This is mostly on account of the former being more hypoallergenic and non-shedding. The three major sizes of a Labradoodle are the standard, small, and medium-size. Apart from these, there is also the mini variety, which has three more sizes, namely, micro, teacup, and toy. The latter, distinct types are going to cost additionally. Demand Much like anything else, the cost of the Labradoodle is also operated by the swings of demand and availability. At the moment, it is certainly one of, if not the most popular crossbreed in the market. The demand has only been growing over the last two decades. When this is the case, instead of forcing the dogs into breeding more pups, the reputable breeders find it more profitable to hike up the price of the individual Labradoodle. This majorly impacts the cost of the breed everywhere. Location The geographical area makes a substantial difference to the cost of a Labradoodle. If in the US, you buy your Labradoodle from a breeder in California, you would be paying a lot more than if you were to get it from a place in the midwest. However, trying to get it from such a place if you live in California might not be the best idea. First, the reduction in price would be compensated by the cost of flying the pup out to you. Plus, actually choosing your pup amongst the others would be a little tough in such a case. Breeder Repute and Record The breeder you get your pup from and if they are reputable or not is a major factor when it comes to calculating the cost. Just as getting a pup from a shelter or a rescue is cheaper, buying it from cheap or at-home breeders will be significantly less expensive. If you are looking to have the puppy in your family for years , making certain that it is in good health and shape is all the more crucial. In the case of a reputable breeder, you can rest assured of the quality of the breed as there are robust health checks and screenings the dogs are subjected to ascertain the health of their heart, patellas, eyes, elbows, hips, etc. Where You Can Find a Labradoodle! The costs of breeding a healthy litter include: Health screening for the parents. Travel and accommodation to meet a suitable stud dog. Veterinary costs for mom and her litter. Extra food. Whelping supplies, such as a whelping box, heat mats, and bedding. Time off work to look after mom, and start socializing her puppies. Backyard breeders, puppy mills, and online sellers may offer puppies at bargain prices, but only by cutting their own costs first. So their puppies are more likely to leave home with inherited health problems that require expensive treatment later. Or with behavioral problems like separation anxiety or stranger-directed aggression, which are difficult or impossible to overcome. Lots of people are overwhelmed by the upfront cost of a well bred puppy. Adopting a dog from a shelter is one way to find a dog for less, but without supporting unethical breeding practices. And some regions even have dedicated rescue organizations which specialize in rehoming Labradoodles and other Poodle crosses. This is a much less expensive route and adoption fees often cover things like initial vaccinations and microchipping. Such as whether they carry any late-onset inherited diseases, or are reactive to certain triggers. What Factors Determine Labradoodle Cost? There are a number of factors which may make people willing to pay more for a Labradoodle. Breeder Good breeders are rarely in it for the money. Even if they sell their puppies for a more money than they spent on them, the profit divided by the number of hours they spent caring the dam and her litter works out in cents! All breeders have their own personal philosophy on pricing pups. They might have a reputation and a waiting list which means they can charge more than the competition. They might also charge highly to deter people from buying their puppies on impulse. Provided you ask politely, a reputable breeder will be happy to explain how they arrived at the cost of their puppies. But a breeder who refuses to discuss how they set their price at all may be attempting to cover up the fact that their puppies have been very poorly raised and are not worth the asking price. Breeding Stock Breeders who invest in meticulous health screening of their sire and dam may pass the cost of that onto their buyers, and they have every right to do so. Puppies from thoroughly health tested parents cost more upfront, but they are likely to cost less in lifetime veterinary fees. Labradoodle puppies from parents with show or field titles may also be advertised at higher prices. The puppies of Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle will have a greater chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Other factors There are other things which might affect Labradoodle costs too. For example, in cities and urban areas, miniature Labradoodles might command higher prices than standard Labradoodles. Some factors have nothing to do with the dog at all. For example, many reputable breeders avoid producing litters around Christmas time to avoid buyers passing them on as gifts to other people, or buying them on impulse without really thinking it through. Low quality breeders on the other hand, tend to push their prices up at this time of year. The Cost of Owning a Labradoodle in the First Year Whether you go a shelter or a breeder, adoption fees and purchase price are only the beginning of what it costs to own a Labradoodle. The first year will typically be the most expensive because this is when most major expenses occur. Such as Having the dog spay or neutered. Training classes. Accessories like a crate, bedding, toys, collar and leash. Labradoodles have a high frequency of joint disorders such as hip and elbow dysplasia, which may require expensive monthly prescriptions to manage. But purebred dogs are your best bet if you are looking for a working dog to do a specific job. Labs were originally bred to retrieve fish from hooks or traps for their owners. Over the generations they became known for being the best dog to have with you if you were doing any kind of shooting. They are skilled at running, swimming, fighting, and following their sense of smell. Springer Spaniels are an old breed; the Romans are said to be responsible for their original European distribution. Springers are sporting dogs, bred to retrieve and flush out game. They will need the long hairs on their legs and ears clipping to keep them free of undergrowth! The Springador Temperament Labradors are friendly and outgoing, and mix well with others. They do bark to sound the alert, but are even tempered on the whole. English Springer Spaniels are friendly and playful. They are also known for being hardworking, steady, and obedient to a point. Springador dogs are incredibly driven when it comes to prey, due to their working roots. Novice handlers find it hard to control them outdoors or under distracting conditions. You should avoid casual walks off leash unless you have taught them to come when called in every scenario. Recall is everything and takes a long time to proof with a dog this driven. Your Springador will have lots of energy, be prone to noise and sadly nervous aggression too in some working lines. Stamina is a key part of their personality. Springador Training All dogs can benefit from basic obedience training and socialization at an early age. They are easy to train, and react well to positive reinforcement. Springer Spaniels especially are very energetic and have a high prey drive, which means they should get recall training from a young age. Springadors can be headstrong! These dogs, because of their Labrador blood, will pull on the leash if possible, so training them not to do that will help save your arm! Also, Labradors stay puppy-like for a long time. This is another good reason to train your Springadors. You may wish to consider advanced training — agility, or therapy, for your Springador. They like to work, and their high activity levels make this good enrichment for them. Springador Exercise A small apartment may not be the best place for your Springador. With so much energy to spare, they really need space to roam. Their minds must also be exercised, so we do recommend agility training or retriever training to keep them stimulated. Springer Spaniels especially are not happy when left alone much, so you should take that into account as well. Springador Parent Health Tests Because Labs and Springer Spaniels are prone to similar inherited diseases, you might not see the health advantages as much in the Labrador x Springer cross as with others. The pups of any mixed breed dog will have similar concerns to their parents, so keep that in mind as you shop for Springadors. But it is impossible to know exactly how those health problems will manifest in a cross-bred puppy. It is important, always, to have a health screening for your dog, and to know its family health history whenever possible. Make sure that both parents have good hip scores, clear eye tests and are PRA clear. The Lab parent should also have good elbow scores. However, in general, both dogs are robust and healthy breeds. Also, purebred dogs may not live as long as mixed breeds. But the longevity of your English Springer Spaniel Lab mix depends on a number of factors, including diet, environment, and quality of life. It also depends on genetics, so when you choose your Springador, consider the health of both parents and their families. Your dog may live anywhere from years. By keeping your Springadors healthy and happy, you can ensure they live as long as possible! As with all interactions with breeders, do your research. If you can, visit the home where your potential pup is growing up. That way, you can meet the parents, see the conditions where she was raised, and view for yourself how the breeder interacts with the dogs. Remember to ask the breeder for health certification for the dogs. A breeder with integrity will have no problems with this. Always meet the mother when buying a puppy. Springador Puppies Remember that if you want to buy cross-bred puppies, they are at risk for the same health problems as their parents of either breed. You could get more Lab, or you could get more Springer Spaniel qualities. This goes for their health issues, their temperament, and their physiology. Springador Rescue If you are willing and able to rescue a Springador, rescues do exist. You may also be able to fix a mix inside a shelter, too. You will also have less choice when it comes to age, gender, and other aspects of your new dog. Training or re-training may be required. If you want to rescue a Springador, you may have to be patient to find the right animal for you and your family. The dog you want might not be waiting in a shelter yet. Should a Lab Mix take after their Labrador Retriever parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and affectionate dog that loves their families. Labrador Retrievers are energetic dogs that tend to have an extended puppyhood. They are also social, friendly, and tend to be patient and gentle with children. This makes them fantastic pets as they also tend to get along well with other dogs and even other pets, despite their retriever tendencies. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. You still want to ask questions about the other parent breed as they are bound to introduce some potential quirks of their own. Although Labs are happiest with room to run, they adapt well to apartments as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection. They also do well in most climates, but do not like to spend long stretches of time alone. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? As with purebred dogs, health often depends on reputable breeding practices. Just as a mix can inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Labrador side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Labrador Mix include patellar luxation , hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cataracts. The other parent breed will likely introduce some other potential conditions to this list. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Labrador Retrievers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. First-time owners may have a challenge at first with their high energy and exuberance, but tend to be successful. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. If the other parent breed tends to be more challenging to train, then you will want to be prepared for that potential and be ready to enroll in puppy training classes if you need them. A Lab Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Labrador Retriever coat, it will be short and will shed throughout the year with heavier shedding as the seasons change. Weekly brushing and the occasional bath keep a Lab coat healthy. Trimming nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Because dental care is often overlooked, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Brushing teeth every day or using an enzyme toothpaste daily in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed helps prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Labrador Retrievers are high-energy working dogs that need plenty of exercise and a job to do to be happy. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you should expect a Labrador Mix to be a high-energy dog as well. Even if the other parent breed sits in a lower activity range, you will still want to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog should they take after their Lab parent. Fully-grown Labrador Retrievers tend to stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Labs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed could affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Labrador Retriever Mix. Featured Labrador Mix Article.

So, when they refuse to eat, you know that something might be wrong. Sometimes, this might be because of the sensitive gut the breed is known for. But in many cases, it could be a sign that they are sick or in pain. Additionally, this could also be a sign of other conditions like oral problems or parasites. However, there are fussy GSDs that prefer variety. This issue is most common for dogs that are given access to table food or are fed a wide variety of dog food. They might also lose their appetite when they are depressed. In other cases, medicines can cause nausea or digestive upset, which will also keep your dog from eating. Sometimes, German Shepherds stop eating the dry kibble that they normally eat. Or, they might ditch the kibble entirely in preference of wet dog food. Here are some of the most common reasons why your dog could be refusing to eat dry food: They have dental issues When oral problems get bad enough, your GSD might refuse to eat due to the pain it causes. This could be caused by cavities, a broken tooth, or swollen gums. In this case, a rotation between kibble brands and variants will help. They just prefer another food Dogs might refuse their regular food in hopes that they will be given another that they have tasted and loved. This might be table scraps or another kind of dog food. In cool weather, German Shepherds use up more energy to keep themselves warm. But in the hot summer months, they prefer to lounge around and keep cool. After some exercise, give them time to cool down completely before giving any food. Dogs can survive up to five days without food as long as they keep drinking water. Your dog can lose their appetite for their regular food when they have plenty of better-tasting treats throughout the day. Make feeding enjoyable. GSDs are always eager to please. Try topping kibble with different types of food that might whet their appetite. Sometimes, a little bit of boiled chicken or beef broth will do the trick. They might not like the print, the ability to see their reflection, or the feeling on their tongue. Using another feeding bowl might help. Give them plenty of exercise. The energetic German Shepherd may need to tire themselves out to work up an appetite. Give your dog the daily exercise they need and then wait at least half an hour after any physical activity before giving them their meals. However, when your dog refuses to eat, you should also keep an eye out for other signs that could be a cause for concern. While many types of food might help jumpstart their appetite, there are several that might do more harm than good. Even if these foods might get them to eat, the effects might be more harmful. If their change in appetite veers too much from their norm it is best to make an appointment with the vet just to be safe.

Everything is enhanced with lavender and mint for that pleasant experience. It creates a proper lather that will help you clean even a Pug puppy that loves to get dirty. Keep in mind that this shampoo contains tea tree oil. If your pooch has very sensitive skin, it might be best to skip this product. Features To Look For Pugs are dogs with some unique needs that make them stand out from the rest. Their wrinkly faces and unique coat types are why they require some special care. You cannot just walk into the store or open a website and buy the first product you see. You need to check for ingredients and think about what might be the best combination for your pup — and what ingredient might cause harm. The same goes for both humans and for our four-legged friends. Certain ingredients, such as tea tree oil, are extremely toxic for dogs, even when not eaten but simply absorbed through the skin. As such, you should aim for products that are as natural as possible but make sure to check the ingredients thoroughly. On the other hand, there are some ingredients that are good both for us and for our pups. This makes your Pug a bit more allergy-friendly and easier to groom. Hypoallergenic Pugs are prone to various skin allergies. They have dry skin that is very easy to get irritated. This is the most sensitive area, and nothing that is too harsh should touch it. Also, if you notice any redness or hair loss on your Pug, make sure to get him to the vet so they can see whether he has any allergies or skin sensitivities that you might not be aware of. Still, picking a hypoallergenic shampoo is a good way to stay on the safe side and try to avoid problems before they arise. Antifungal And Antibacterial One of many health problems Pugs are prone to are hotspots. These are inflamed skin lesions that often contain pus. You might also know them by the name acute moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis. This is a condition caused by scratching, and one of the main reasons why your Pug will scratch excessively are fungal infections. This is especially the case with wrinkly dogs, such as Pugs or Shar Peis. Things also go vice versa, and fungal infections can be a consequence of hotspots — or rashes and allergies — after the dog was licking them and scratched for too long. Its saliva and other bacterias will cause the scratched spots to become infected. Bathing your Pug with anti-fungal shampoo can be a good preventative measure. While they are not a replacement for medication, they are a good thing to have nearby when you have such sensitive dogs. Good For Dog Hair Pugs are dogs that experience moderate to high levels of shedding. This is especially the case with fawn Pugs, as they have a double coat, with a thick undercoat and a bit longer topcoat. Two times a year, during the shedding season, their shedding amount will increase, and this can make it really challenging to clean. One of the things you can do for your Pug is to pick the best dog brush and make sure you use it at least a few times a week. Another thing is to buy one of the best shampoos for Pugs. There are many deshedding shampoos currently on the market that you can use. These shampoos have such ingredients that they make the hair follicles stronger, reducing the number of loose hairs and making the shedding season a bit more manageable. Keep in mind that using these shampoos is not a replacement for the rest of the grooming session. Still, the difference should be noticeable after just a few months of using such shampoos. No Harmful Ingredients When looking at the ingredient list, there are a few things to be aware of. If you see the label proprietary blend of coat and skin conditioners and moisturizers, avoid this shampoo at all costs. This is a label manufacturers use when they want to hide the true ingredient list. You need to learn as much information about the best Shampoos for pugs, as well as some tips that can help you have the most out of bath times. Here are a few dog bathing pieces of advice you might find useful: Bathe Your Pug Often Pugs need more baths than most other breeds. Their skin and specific coat type means they get dirty faster, and you might need to clean them more often. For example, most dog breeds will need a bath every few months. This is the same no matter their coat length or size. However, Pugs might need baths every few weeks. In fact, during the shedding season or if they get a skin infection, you might need to bathe them every week! As such, you need to find a balance. Due to many wrinkles, crannies, and nooks, this area is a paradise for dirt, food, and harmful bacteria. As such, make sure to clean his face regularly with a gentle face cleanser or some similar product. If shampoo gets into them, it might irritate them, causing redness or even vision problems. Similarly, due to the shape of their nose, they are prone to breathing problems. This will only worsen if the water gets into their noses — especially if this is something that keeps on happening. When looking at puppy shampoos, there are a few things you need to have in mind. First and foremost, Pug puppies are even more sensitive than their parents. This is how sensitive they are. Look for tearless, hypoallergenic shampoos that are specially formulated for puppies. Also, look for a shampoo with a pH value of 6. These shampoos are considered pH-balanced when it comes to dogs, as dogs have a more neutral pH balance compared to humans. Do Pugs Need Conditioners? Conditioners will help your dog get free of mats and tangles. Instead, you might want to use conditioner for the appearance benefits it brings. Technically, you can use human shampoo on dogs. Dog shampoos and human shampoos have different pH values. As such, your gentle shampoo might harm your pup. Also, many shampoos we use have artificial fragrances and colors. These are bad not just for dogs, but also for us. However, while you might say that you enjoy the flowery smell of your shampoo, your dog probably hates it, and now he cannot get rid of it no matter what he does. As such, you should never use the same shampoo you use on yourself to bathe your beloved Pug. Check ingredients, check price, place the shampoo in your cart and make your pooch shiny and clean! Next, we'll dive into the details of each of these to ensure that your Pug receives the most benefits possible. Shampoo for Pugs What shampoo should do for a Pug: Remove accumulated body oil. Around-the-clock, a dog's body is producing natural oils that are secreted through the hair follicles. These serve a practical purpose of naturally protecting and moisturizing the skin. But, these do not evaporate; rather, they accumulate. When these build-up, they block skin pores, interfere with normal air flow, and can cause an unpleasant odor. One of the goals when shampooing a Pug is to cleanse away these oils in a healthy way. The wrong type of shampoo can either be too harsh, stripping oils so severely that a dog's skin is left raw or irritated or, opposite to that, is not effective enough and simply skims over the oils. Promote good skin and fur health. Pugs tend to have sensitive skin, so shampooing is an opportunity to soak your Pug in ingredients that correct any dryness by improving moisture levels, restore health and elasticity, help protect the skin going forward, and work to resolve issues like itching, rashes, hot spots, and other common skin problems. Help free loose hairs. The Pug is a high-shedding breed with lots of short hairs either right at the fall stage or trapped in the dense coat. The brushing you do before baths and the shampooing process can help fully loosen and remove these hairs. What to avoid: Knowing what is best to use on a Pug involves knowing what to stay away from. This includes: Soaping agents. It's easy to assume that some sort of soap should be used when bathing a Pug, but canines can have adverse skin reactions to soaping agents. Instead, plant-based cleansers should be used. Additives including synthetic preservatives, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, polyethylene glycol, and artificial perfumes or dyes which can cause allergic reactions or irritation, and some are linked to health issues including organ damage and some cancers, with long term use. A pH balance under 6. The best shampoos for Pugs: It takes a lot for a shampoo to be considered a great choice to use on a Pug. It must be effective enough to reach and remove excess body oils from deep beneath this breed's dense coat but at the same time be gentle on the skin. For times of heavy shedding often in the late autumn and early spring , Furminator deShedding Ultra Premium Shampoo can be a great help. This is designed to release dead hairs from the coat in breeds like the Pug that have thick fur. This is applied, left on for 10 minutes, and then washed out. Since this works so well, this should not be used more than once a month. Shampooing tips: Once you've chosen a great shampoo for your Pug, you'll want to be sure to follow a few guidelines for optimal results: 1. Before you shampoo your Pug, go over the coat to remove dead hairs. While a slicker brush can work okay, an awesome alternative is the Pet Grooming Gloves by Pat Your Pet ; there's nothing to hold and the rubber tips are incredible at snagging onto dead hairs from even the thickest of coats, allowing you to de-shed your Pug must faster than with a brush. Since Pugs have such dense coats, be sure to thoroughly soak the coat down to the skin before applying any shampoo. This is best accomplished by using a spray nozzle. Be generous with the shampoo, you do not want the beneficial ingredients to be spread too thin. Young Pug puppies and black-coated Pugs with a single layer of fur may be able to be scrubbed by hand, however with adult non-black Pugs that usually have a double-coat , a bath brush will help you massage the shampoo down to skin level. Massage the shampoo in for 3 to 5 minutes. If your Pug has any sort of skin or coat issues, you can massage for up to 10 minutes to allow nourishing ingredients to soak in. Once you rinse out the shampoo, always follow with a condition; this is covered next. Wash-Out Coat Conditioners What conditioner should do for a Pug: Shampoo and conditioner are meant to work together; stopping with the shampoo can be a mistake that can lead to unhealthy fur and poor coat texture. During the bathing process, hair cuticles the outer layer of the hairs open up. This is great for when you're washing your Pug. But, if they are left in this state, the fur will be very vulnerable to external elements such as cold air or dry air in the winter , and contact friction all year-round. The fur can become overly dry, feel like straw, develop split ends, and lose its shine. A conditioner is designed to smooth the hair cuticles back down to their 'closed' position, thus resetting the protective shield of the hairs. In addition to this, once the real cleansing work is done, via the shampoo, the conditioner is your opportunity to slather the coat once final time with moisturizing and restorative ingredients. This will help carry your Pug over until the next bath. This works excellent when paired with any of Earthbath's shampoo formulas see the previous section of ' Shampoo for Pugs '. The oatmeal, aloe, and additional vanilla and almond are a perfect blend for this breed's sensitive skin. This is often used alongside brushing and is meant to be applied as often as every day but can be done randomly as needed. Though this sort of product can work as a detangler, something Pugs do not need, but these can have lots of other benefits. Let's look at what a good leave-in will do: Offer round-the clock protection from environmental and weather related elements including UV exposure in the summer and dry arid air in the winter. Protect fur from contact friction. Help repel tiny debris, dirt, urine, allergens, and irritants. Lock in moisture for a healthy shine. Keep a Pug smelling nice and clean. So, as you can see, spritzing your Pug can be a helpful part of overall grooming and upkeep. Hotspots are also common within their folds because there is not enough airflow, and moisture becomes trapped, which can develop into a yeast infection or other irritations. Considerations Ingredients Synthetics: Additives such as synthetic preservatives, parabens, sulfates, and artificial dyes and perfumes can cause further skin irritation or other health issues when used long term. A pH-balanced formula offers a gentle cleanser. Natural: All-natural ingredients provide the safest route, and you may opt for organic ingredients if that is important to you. Natural ingredients include essential oils, coconut oil, oatmeal, aloe vera, almond oil, and many others. Be careful of certain essential oils because they can be irritating to some dogs. These may include tea tree oil and peppermint, to name a few. However, chamomile and lavender are two essential oils that are known to treat skin allergies. Moisturizing: Ingredients that moisturize the skin and the hair provide many benefits. They can help heal and restore the skin, which allows your Pug to feel better. Popular ingredients for moisturizing include coconut oil, oatmeal, and aloe vera. Deodorizing: Ingredients that deodorize will help remove tough odors naturally and effectively. Many will combat bacteria and fungus to help prevent infections from occurring. Common ingredients that deodorize are zine, rosemary, lavender, and aloe vera. Image Credit: Selfmade studio, Shutterstock Price Some specialty shampoos can be pricey, especially if you have to bathe your Pug weekly. Keep the price in mind if you are on a budget, but know the formula of the shampoo so you can stay away from products that are known to exacerbate skin allergies. Guarantee If you are unsure if a product will be effective, find one that offers a satisfaction guarantee. It will bring you peace of mind and ease any concerns you might have if it is an expensive product. Bathing your Pug frequently can result in drying out the skin, but it may be necessary if your dog gets dirty often. Products that are not soap-based and formulated to be gentle on the skin will help prevent skin issues from occurring. This prevents odors, hair loss , itchiness, and bacteria, and yeast from forming. Rinse out the creases of all shampoo. If any residue is left, it could cause skin irritation. Dry between the creases. Use warm water when bathing — not too hot nor too cool. It should be a comfortable temperature. To help with de-shedding, you can buy special brushes that you fill with soap. Brush your Pug regularly to remove loose hair. Conclusion Pugs make great companions, and their owners adore them to pieces. But sometimes it can be challenging to care for their sensitive skin and high-amount of shedding hair. This review list highlights seven of the best shampoos for Pugs. An affordable option is the FURminator de-shedding shampoo because it helps remove excess hair to prevent constant shedding from your Pug. However, when it comes to pugs , it absolutely is. They are known for having extremely sensitive skin. It is vital that you choose a gentle shampoo for your canine otherwise, you may find yourself with an itchy dog. Ingredients First and foremost, the ingredients in the shampoo matter a lot. Generally, the more ingredients there are in shampoo, the more likely a dog will react to one of the ingredients. Therefore, you preferably want a shampoo with very basic ingredients. If the ingredients are few and natural, then the odds of your dog having a reaction is not terribly serious. Of course, some dogs will have reactions to specific allergies. If your dog commonly has reactions, then you need to check the ingredient list and find the common denominator. Other times, they will be obvious chemicals. With that said, many dogs do not have specific allergies, though they may be sensitive to some harsh chemicals. Many pugs react to harsher chemicals, for instance. Therefore, we highly recommend that you choose a more natural option. For instance, many include vitamin E, which is vital for skin health. Furthermore, aloe vera is commonly added. If they have serious reactions, you should avoid shampoos with those ingredients in the future. Image Credit: Ezzlo, Shutterstock Price While we would all like to not worry about the price of products, it is extremely important when shopping. When looking at the price, keep the size of the bottle in mind as well. Smaller bottles may cost less, but they may actually be more expensive in the future. Therefore, you should look very carefully at the size and price. We took into account all of the prices while reviewing each product. Therefore, you should have a good idea of what each product costs by reading out reviews. We highly recommend that you keep looking at the price every few times you purchase to ensure that it is still worth the price. Effectiveness While we do want these formulas to be gentle, it is also vital that they clean effectively. However, there are several different ways that shampoo can work. For instance, while the primary purpose of shampoo is to clean, there are other ways that they work too. It all depends on what you need. If your dog has a clinical problem, then you may need a medicated shampoo. Obviously, this is going to be a bit different than just finding a cleaning shampoo. We highly recommend that you speak to your vet about the specific formulas that you should be looking for. Often, they will have a specific option that you need to purchase. Conclusion There are lots of shampoos out there that may be gentle enough for pugs. However, they are not all made equal, so it is vital that you choose the right option for your canine. Of course, what your exact dog needs depends on a variety of factors, so you may need to try many different formulas before you finally settle on one. Plus, it is also a solid option for practically any sensitive dog out there, making it great for multi-pet homes. However, the bottles are a bit smaller, so you may pay more in the long run. We hope that one of these formulas is suitable for your canine. When in doubt, we recommend speaking to your vet, especially if your dog has health problems. Often, they can recommend appropriate ingredients. golden retriever puppy art - We appreciate your time and hope we can answer any questions you have about our English golden retriever puppies. We have a 14 acre farm located just outside of Culpeper, Virginia. Our golden retrievers are all in the house with us, although there is a dog room. This room provides the golden retrievers a safe space where they can't get into trouble if they are without supervision. A group of dogs tend to pack together and follow a leader, even in behavior they wouldn't do on their own so it's important to keep them safe when alone. As a breeder, I spend much of my day in the dog room working. More time if there is a litter of puppies for sale! I put my goldens out every hour or so and let them stay out until they ask to come in, usually 15 or 20 minutes. We both get a lot of exercise with this schedule. As the days grow longer, they enjoy staying out longer. Winter was my first breed dog and now, at five, is a pet only. Snow is the only breed female I have but this will be her last litter. She will be going to her forever home after this litter. She has another four years of breeding but I believe she will be better served by letting her find her perfect home. Reine and Summer are the future breeding couple and will be bred next year. Although we started breeding Cream Golden Retrievers in , we have been raising goldens retrievers for over 40 years. We agree that crate use is highly recommended for at least the first few months as it aids in house-training, prevents boredom destruction, maintains a safe environment for the puppy from curiosity mishaps, as well as a peaceful place to nap with a toy and a blanket. Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.
