Since My son and Daughter In Law work at home we are able to spend time both indoors and outdoors with all of the animals. However, French Bulldogs are more suited for indoor living as opposed to outdoors. We do like to bring them out when the weather is moderate. At Frenchie Kisses Kennel we keep a close watch on the dogs as we wander about and if they seem a bit tired we simply return them to our air conditioned or heated in the winter home. Luckily the weather here in Washington State does not have horrible extremes so air conditioning and a good wood stove keeps their life very comfortable. French Bulldogs overheat easily because of their overly large chest and compacted air way, along with their insistence on being active. Their bulk and being Brachycephalic makes it impossible for them to regulate their temperature efficiently. In addition, Frenchies are top heavy and therefore have a difficult time swimming. We are very cautious when exercising them during hot or humid weather, and at times must insist they take a break. Though they tend to love the water, they must not be left alone in water as they may not be able to get out after exhausting themselves trying to swim. French Bulldogs are known as non swimmers. That's not to say that they are dogs of little brain. It's more like their "can do," can't keep up with their "want to. We love that the dogs want to be with us, very close by when we are walking around on the property. Washington is Cougar country and we would not want them to wander far so we do keep a close watch on them when we have them out. They all tend to get along with the cats and we are working hard to convince them that all animals are our friends. Since the Frenchies are so rambunctious it is hard to convince all of our pets that they are sweet, friendly dogs. I have my mind set that all my pets are going to get along and I am hoping that my will is stronger than a Bulldog! The puppies are exposed to the cats at a young age to instill a respect for other animals. Our cats are everywhere we now have five the puppies can have access to. We also have volunteer feral cats, that we are pretty sure come from a catch and release program in our area as they just appear with ears notched and previously spayed or neutered. The puppies only meet one of them He has become an outside pet only does not like to be confined kitty and occasionally comes to the door to see what is going on. He is friendly with the dogs and puppies. Three of our cats are both indoors and outdoors so the puppies learn early on that cats are their friends. We now have three Chickens that wander the property during the day. We hope to also use them to condition the puppies to being comfortable with birds. This makes for very sweet gentle puppies as they mature. We are also able to care for them individually if they become sick and give them excellent medical attention. We have a wonderful vet who has taught us how to do much of the necessary medical care at home since we are 45 minutes from any Veterinarian. Sometimes without the training he has provided us we would lose puppies due to no access to immediate care. We can and do give mouth to mouth resuscitation if needed. We will do anything necessary to save a puppy or dog. We love them for the wonderful little family additions that they are. We now offer training packages for our puppies: Child Tolerance. You need the best exercise for German Shepherd puppies to keep them healthy, fit, and, more importantly… Out of mischief! Quite the opposite is true for your fast-growing breed! German Shepherd puppies should stick to only five minutes of continuous, on-leash leisurely walking at a time, based on their age in months. So, an 8-week-old puppy can walk for 10 minutes at a time on a leash, while a 6-month-old can walk on a leash for 30 minutes at a time. However, your puppy can enjoy low-impact, gentle exercises for longer periods of time. You can play games that work on sustained growth multiple times per day safely. Instead, exercise on soft surfaces, for example: Grass Sand Dirt paths or trails Stretching of soft ligaments at too early an age, strains on young, growing joints, and carrying too much weight on their overall framework can and will harm your young puppy. This leads to problems in adulthood, which you could avoid! Remember to watch for: Panting heavily with rapid breath Lagging on their walks for longer than usual Stopping on walks and standing Lying down on their belly or side If your dog is hyperactive and displays excessive chewing and destructive behavior, they may need engaging brain stimulation to help them use their brains to engage in their environments constructively. Ideally, you also need to teach them basic commands and house manners. Start now with basic obedience training to avoid later behavioral issues. Eventually, your active, adult GSD will need at least 2 walks of 45 minutes each source. Other great ways to exercise your German Shepherd puppy include working on their balance, enjoying mental stimulation, and playing gently with toys they love. Until your vet clears your dog as having their bones fully fused this is around 12 to 18 months of age , activity should be cautious and slow-paced. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best way to exercise German Shepherds. With free running, your dog is off-leash and can stop or slow as they wish. Limit and monitor on-leash walks and activity while your German Shepherd is growing. When walking on a leash, allow them to Walk at their own pace Stop and start as they please Sniff around leisurely to explore the grass, flowers, and trees Lay down, roll around, and dig in approved digging places Use a no-pull harness with a design that allows for natural shoulder movement to avoid unnatural gait development. Try this padded no-pull harness on your German Shepherd to avoid any neck injuries to her while she is young. This design also limits pulling and helps teach nice leash walking manners. The handle on the back of the no-pull harness makes it easy to grab your pup to stop them from running into a hazard or just to catch them! Read more helpful information on the benefits and disadvantages of using a harness or a collar to help you choose the right equipment for walking your new puppy. There are plenty of other ideas to try with your new baby German Shepherd. Even better? You can find so many ways to learn what your new German Shepherd puppy likes to play with for their fun and games! Keep reading for a German Shepherd puppy exercise chart and specific, step-by-step fun games to keep your new pup happy and healthy. Exercising puppies heavily too early in life may lead to joint damage. This is especially likely in large breeds with rapidly growing and heavily loaded joints, such as your GSD. High-Impact Activity to Avoid Jumping, especially from couches, furniture, or cars Twisting such as chasing a toy that wildly moves in many directions Exercising over hard or uneven ground especially sidewalks and asphalt Keep exercise short and frequent, as this is more beneficial than long, infrequent periods of activity. Of course, their exercise needs can vary based on a number of factors including age, fitness level, general health, food intake and more. As a rule of thumb, puppies will need five minutes of formal exercise such as walkies for every month of their age. These walks should be opportunities to explore their environment, work on training and good behaviour outdoors, and socialise with other people and dogs in a controlled manner. How much exercise does a senior German Shepherd need? You can also set your own goals manually in case they have higher or lower exercise needs. What types of exercise are best for German Shepherds? German Shepherds excel at all sorts of exercise and canine sports thanks to their working background. In addition to their daily walks, you could try:. It also helps to improve their mental health by reducing boredom and anxiety. Exercise can also help to prevent behavior problems from developing. There are many different ways that you can exercise your German Shepherd. You can take them for a walk, run or hike. You can also play fetch or Frisbee with them. Whatever you do, make sure that you are having fun too! Dogs are social creatures and love to spend time with their family. The age-appropriate exercise chart for German Shepherds is very important. This is mainly because they will require a different amount of exercise as they grow up and grow old. As German Shepherds age, they will generally need less exercise. This is because their metabolism slows down and they become less active overall. However, every German Shepherd is different and some may still need a good amount of exercise even as they get older. There are a few things to keep in mind when exercising an older German Shepherd. First, start slowly and build up gradually. Older German Shepherds are more likely to get injured if they try to do too much too soon. Second, focus on low-impact activities like walking or swimming. These are easier on the joints than running or jumping. Finally, make sure to give your German Shepherd plenty of breaks. They may need to rest more often than they did when they were younger. They need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy, and they love to play. Here are some of the best exercises for German Shepherds that will meet their exercise needs: 1. Walking your German Shepherd is one of the most important things you can do for them. It provides them with much-needed exercise and helps to keep their energy levels down. Additionally, walking also helps to socialize your dog and gets them used to being around people and other animals. Walking is a great way to start off with any dog, especially high-energy dogs. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the distance as your dog ages. Running Running is also great for high-energy dogs. You can start by running alongside your dog while they walk and gradually increase the speed as they get used to it. German Shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They are also one of the most versatile, which is why they make great family pets. However, German Shepherds are also working dogs, and as such, they need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Running is a great way to provide your German Shepherd with the exercise they need, and it can be a lot of fun for both you and your dog. Here are a few reasons why running your German Shepherd is important: German Shepherds were originally bred as herding dogs, so they have a lot of energy. This means that they need plenty of exercise to burn off all that energy. Running is a great way to bond with your German Shepherd. Frisbee or fetch Frisbee or fetch is another fun exercise for high-energy dogs. Dogs love to chase after things and this will help them use up some of that energy. Playing fetch or frisbee with your German Shepherd is an excellent way to help them burn off any excess energy they might have. German Shepherds are especially good hiking companions because of their athleticism and obedience. Hiking is a great way to bond with your dog and tire them out at the same time — both of which are important for a healthy relationship. Hiking is another great exercise for high-energy dogs. It is a great way to explore new places and get some exercise at the same time. Just be sure to start off with shorter hikes and work your way up as your dog gets used to it. Hiking with your German Shepherd is also a great way to meet other dog owners and socialize with your pup. If you live in an area with limited trails or parks, hiking can give you access to new places to explore together. And of course, spending time outdoors is always good for your mental health. So next time you and your dog are feeling cooped up, consider heading out for a hike — you might just be surprised at how much you both enjoy it. Share this:. Sep 06, Puppies need exercise to develop healthy bones, muscles and hearts. Exercise goes a long way to help curb anxiety and behavior issues related to boredom. But you may have heard that too much exercise can be harmful. How much exercise is necessary, how much is too much, and what kinds of exercise should you be doing? As a general rule, your puppy knows best. Normal puppy play is okay, and you should never feel as though you should stop your puppy from playing on its own accord. Short walks are also okay, as long as your idea of a short walk isn't 3 miles every morning! Short games of fetch and tug are also okay. Fetch is especially hard on the body because most dogs rapidly accelerate to go after the ball and rapidly decelerate once they get to it, so good throws is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises. Tug is also hard on the body, so minutes is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises as well. Swimming is a great, low-impact exercise. Just make sure your puppy doesn't ingest too much water while swimming. It's also recommended that you not play fetch in the water because dogs can accidentally ingest a lot of water when retrieving toys thrown into bodies of water. Examples of exercises that are too rigorous for puppies are long hikes, running steps, long games of fetch, long walks, running, jogging, weight pull and pulling carts of any kind, wearing vests with anything over a few ounces in it for anything other than a short stroll, flyball, and inappropriate amounts of agility training. All of these things are stressful on soft, growing bones and joints and can result in hip and elbow dysplasia and musculoskeletal deformities, diseases and injuries. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5 minutes for each month of the puppy's age of acceptable exercise no more than twice a day. For instance, 15 minutes of exercise twice a day is ideal for a 3-month-old puppy, while 20 minutes twice a day is ideal for a 4-month-old puppy. As a general rule, you can start building up puppies to adult levels of exercise once they turn 9 months of age if they're not expected to grow over 25lbs. By a year they can be exercised as an adult as long as you properly build up their stamina. For medium and large breeds, you can begin to build them up to adult levels of exercise by 15 months and it's safe to exercise them as adults once they turn 18 months old. German Shepherd dogs will naturally travel in a cantering-lope rather than a slow walk. That means that it is imperative that you train your puppy early on how to walk on a leash by your side without pulling. German Shepherds are a powerful breed and are capable of dragging handlers who aren't strong enough to hold them back. Eliminate the possibility of a physical tug of war by relying on solid training instead. Remember, exercise is also great for keeping hip and elbow joints stabilized in German Shepherd Dogs. Many large breeds are known to suffer from hip and elbow problems later in life, but dysplasia seems to unfairly target the German Shepherd. Regular exercise can help to build muscle around joints to protect them. The more muscle, the less stress on the joint. Make sure you keep your puppies lean, well hydrated, and wait an hour or two after your puppy eats before exercise. If you stick by these rules, you lessen the chances of hip and elbow dysplasia, panosteitis, strains, sprains, ligament injuries, bloat, obesity, heart disease and arthritis. Also keep the temperature in mind and watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stop exercise if your puppy no longer wants to play or stops to rest and everything should be fine. A daily German Shepherd exercise routine is a must for your high-energy breed! A daily exercise routine not only keeps them fit and healthy but also helps them develop better behavior. And you know how important it is to have a well-mannered dog! This guide has everything you need to start and keep your dog on the right track for a healthy life. So be sure to follow the right guide and advice for your German Shepherd. This information is for German Shepherds over one year of age who are healthy and without any known diseases or medical conditions. If you own an adult German Shepherd, his exercise tolerance will be almost limitless! This breed suits very active families and prefers lots of exercise daily source. They can become bored easily without a suitable daily routine. Exercises for German Shepherds The best exercises for German Shepherds move their bodies in a variety of ways while letting them explore their environment. They love to run, jump, sprint, swim, chase ball toys, fetch, tug, and catch. Walk your German Shepherd daily for the right amount of time. Walks are easy on most German Shepherds and are essential for dogs who spend much of their day indoors. Walking a German Shepherd is the most popular form of exercise for fitness and health. Walk your German Shepherd at least twice for 90 minutes Preferably split into 2 sessions in the morning and evening time Avoid extreme cold and heat to keep both of you safe Vary the surface you walk on to avoid damage to their joints from repetitive motions. Try this no-pull harness to have more control on your walks. The harness has 2 points to clip, in the front and on the back, which puts you in greater control of a wild-walking German Shepherd. The comfortable padding on the harness also helps prevent sore spots on your dog, avoiding any skin issues or fur loss. Walking Exercise Routine Two walks of 45 minutes to one hour each for an adult, healthy German Shepherd are a good start for an exercise routine to meet their needs. Remember, they require gentler exercises to avoid bone and joint damage. Jogging and running to increase endurance. German Shepherds love to run off-leash. Many German Shepherds love to run for fun with their owners. Your breed is built to move long distances over grassy, rocky, hilly terrain, and this shows in their desire for running. Look for softer surfaces to include with your daily exercise routine. Vary your surfaces for maximum health benefits. Also, running and jogging at a set pace is very repetitive on joints. Once your dog is more conditioned you can increase both the time and distance they run with you. Check their paws daily after each run to look for any sores, abrasions, or cuts. Tug-of-war game for strength and power training. German Shepherds are powerful and athletic, and they love to play games with their owners. Include simple strength training exercises at home to increase muscle mass and overall power by playing tug with your German Shepherd daily. And playing tug-of-war goes a long way in helping your Shepherd develop fuller, stronger muscles and more energy and vitality. The knots allow you to grip the rope and maintain control better while the cotton rope provides a soft surface for your German Shepherd to grip. Worried playing tug might make your German Shepherd more aggressive? German Shepherds are most active at dawn and dusk, so try to include at least 10 to 15 minutes of tug before work. Ideally, aim for tug daily if your dog enjoys the exercise. A flirt pole increases endurance. A flirt pole helps exercise your German Shepherd in small spaces. The flirt pole is a gift to worn-out German Shepherd owners! It not only helps your dog improve their basic manners and impulse control, but it also gives them a workout. And in just a few minutes of play! Look for a pole with an enticing lure to excite and interest your dog. How to Use a Flirt Pole with Your German Shepherd Lure your dog to play by dragging the toy on the ground in a large arching half-circle pattern. They chase the lure while you move the toy in different ways to keep them moving. They catch the lure and tug. You give their release or drop command and start the exercise game again. Avoid playing this game by moving the lure in tight circles or making your dog jump high in the air for it. If your dog is slipping frequently, definitely find another surface to play on. It can become damaged if left alone with your GSD or if they are allowed to tug on it excessively. Only use large arches on the ground to avoid sharp turns, especially for puppies. Include doggy squats for healthy hips. Have you heard of doggie squats for exercise? Dog squats help build strength in the large leg muscles. They also can help an aging Shepherd maintain their strength to keep them more mobile and prevent hip issues later in life. And in younger Shepherds that help give your dog the power to take on physical challenges. Dog squats are like human squats. Then, have them stand. Use treats to entice them to keep repeating the action. After two weeks, increase the reps in healthy dogs not puppies or seniors. Have your dog start with 2 sets of 5 squats and add on more squats gradually from there. Use a variety of tasty treats to keep them interested and motivated. You can increase the number of sets and reps as your dog looks more comfortable with the exercise and builds up strength in their hips. Running uphill improves muscle power and cardio health. Gently sloping hills are perfect for an exercise routine for your athletic GSD. Having your dog run uphill gives a great, free strength training workout. As your dog pushes themselves uphill, they must engage their rear leg muscles intensely. This is a great all-over bodybuilding exercise, but especially for their back end. Instead, look for a moderate rolling hill and encourage your dog by calling them up and down to you. This is also a cardio workout for you, too! Repeat this hill run a few times. Then, give your dog rest and repeat. Hill Running with Your German Shepherd Begin by exploring hill running only 2 times a week with plenty of rest in between hill runs to recover. You can gradually increase their routine to 3 to 4 times a week with longer sprints to keep their hearts in tip-top shape. A balancing disc helps improve reflexes and coordination. This is a balancing discs but only wobbles slightly on the top to avoid major falls or tumbles. The goal of balance activity is to enhance body awareness, encourage stable weight shifts, and promote stability and motor function. In a nutshell, balance exercises help teach your dog the way their body moves and how to alter their movements to adjust more easily. This means that your dog is less prone to injuries since their bodies are agile. Balancing discs are a very popular piece of exercise equipment for dogs and fitness professionals. It works by having your dog stand on the disc and using its muscles to stay balanced and stable. These are great for strengthening all muscle groups as a complete body workout. The Instability Challenge On the FitPaws balance disc, there are three basic ways to create a challenge for your dog. Have your dog place one paw on the platform and offer them a treat. Next, ask for both front paws on the board to increase difficulty. Finally, move into harder positions such as all four paws on the disc, sitting on the disk, or even backing up onto the disk with only the back paws. Balancing is also a great way to bond with your dog since they need to trust your commands and the support you provide to them. Balance Disc Exercise Routine 3 to 4 times a week start with an easy pose for your dog on the disc. As they improve their balance, increase the time slowly as you ask them to hold other poses, for example, front paws on disk, back paws on disk, and stepping on and off slowly. Sprints build muscle and cardio fitness. If you want to save your shoulder, try a dog ball launcher with your German Shepherd. And your German Shepherd naturally excels at speed because of its herding history. While excessive and sharp turns on the ground can injure your dog due to the stress of stopping, you can still play a game of catch in moderation. Instead of seeing how far you can throw the ball and having your GSD slide into the ground, aim for shooting the ball in the air a short distance in front to allow your dog to catch the ball and avoid harsh slides. You can launch tennis balls up to 50 feet in the air without exhausting your arms! Short sprints are great for burning away energy that would otherwise become pent-up anxiety in your dog. Sprints also increase lung and heart health, challenge muscles and balance, improve coordination, and make your German Shepherd happy! Instead, 3 to 4 times a week with rests during your sprints so they can catch their breath, aim for them to catch the ball from the air. Looking for the pawfect playtime for your German Shepherd? Weave poles for speed and agility. Your herding dog loves to learn to pole weave! Did you know that the German Shepherd holds the record for completing the fastest weave pole source? Nature made your breed for pole weaving! Weave poles are easy to teach by luring your dog through with a treat. Like this durable, adjustable weave pole that is easy to set up and store away, or can be adjusted quickly for beginners to learn the exercise. Set up your weave poles in your yard. Begin at one end of the weave poles and slowly lure your GSD through the poles. Reinforce their efforts with tasty rewards regularly. Once your German Shepherd has the hand of it, start narrowing the poles gradually together. This gives your dog a harder challenge. Many Shepherds love the weave and will readily enjoy it when you increase the difficulty with more poles. But some dogs, especially puppies, need extra practice to learn the weaving exercise motion. Stick with it for a great way to exercise your German Shepherd in a small area! Start slowly as they gain confidence in their new agility. Increase the challenge by adding in more poles or shortening the distance between poles. Encourage your dog to repeat the weave once they come through the end by running with them to the start of the weave poles and giving your command to weave again. Find a schedule that works for you and stick to an activity routine for the best health benefits for your companion. This means: You keep their mind active and out of trouble using puzzle games for your German Shepherd. You allow them to have a balanced social life where they interact with other dogs and people positively. Without a complete fitness and health program, your dog is likely to experience problems. And the worst part of it all? Some owners forget about starting at the most obvious foundation and neglect to give their German Shepherds the right diet. These negative behaviors can cause issues for your family that disrupts your lives. Start with a solid foundation to keep your German Shepherd healthy to avoid the fallout of poor fitness. Behavior and Mental Problems. For the most part, you let the puppy decide his own activities at this stage. Your puppy, at this tender age, does not need exercise; he needs activity. Indoor play consists of informal activities in which you educate your German Shepherd to avoid dangerous behavior while satisfying his need to be active. At this stage, it is more about mental activity games and basic training as opposed to physical activity. This nifty little toy is excellent for young pups. Here are some low-impact games that are appropriate for a German Shepherd puppy at 8 weeks of age: Puppy the Explorer Let your GSD explore the indoors while keeping a close eye on him. This also presents an excellent opportunity to teach him to follow you. You must do this organically. Wait for him to get in his explorer mode and start walking beside him. Remember not to exceed a period of 10 minutes of exercise in the second month and stop whenever your pup shows signs of being tired. The minute mark is the maximum duration, not the minimum. Initially, your puppy will get tired after a few minutes of walking around and exploring. In each subsequent week, he will be engaged for a few more minutes. You might need to use jazz hands to get his curiosity. Once your pup starts following your palm with his head, simply tap his nose and hug him. At this point, you might be tempted to start moving your arm out of his reach to prolong the game. Follow the Wiggling Toy This is the ideal transition exercise that I would start around the tenth week of indoor play. For this, I recommend the Pacific Pups Rope Toys Set from Amazon, not just because it is budget-friendly but because you can use toys of different sizes as your German Shepherd puppy continues to grow. Once you have him sitting close to you, introduce the rope toy and place it on the floor with your hand holding onto one end. Your job then is to make sure he takes at least four steps before he catches the rope toy. Again, this is a high-engagement, low-impact exercise that builds up the foundation for medium-impact activities later on. Jaw and Bodyweight Exercises Recommended age: 3 — 4 months Maximum duration: minutes per day, twice a day Risk factor: low Things to avoid: sprints Your German Shepherd puppy is now three months old; he is building on his training according to the standard puppy training methods, and you can start to interact with him more physically. Still, his growth plates remain open, and you still need to avoid exercises that strain the joints, especially ones located around long bones like limbs. At the same time, your German Shepherd has more energy and may want to exercise more than is good for him. As a result, your role has shifted. Here, instead of letting your puppy have the toy once he follows it and grabs hold of it, you play a small tug of war with him. If your GSD is used to getting the toy after following it, he may get too defensive when you tug it. I recommended the toy set for this reason precisely. The final thing worth remembering about this game is that you always lose! You place the rope toy on the ground and let your German Shepherd puppy follow it as you move it around. Once he grabs hold of it, you use your arm strength to keep it in place. Do not try to pull it too hard. It is also essential that you gradually move up the tug of war in time and position. Gradually you can move the tug toy slightly above the ground. Throughout this, make sure your dog is on a leash because you do not want to encourage grabbing and dashing. Ultimately, you have to let your puppy win! As soon as you release the toy, he gets to have it for a while. This is also the best stage to train him to release objects on command. Make sure your GSD is on a long leash before you start this activity. Associating running with playtime is risky. A long loose leash allows you to bring him back to you gently. Be prepared to spend a lot of time negotiating with your GSD. I suggest playing tug before this because it builds trust. When you roll the ball on the floor, your puppy will get it. You cannot expect him to bring the toy to you. You simply tug the leash gently and bring him close to you. Then, you hold the ball in place. You should not pull it away. That will only cause your German Shepherd to bite down on it harder. When you have it firmly in place, your dog will try to wrestle it free but will eventually let the ball go. You can encourage this by just talking to him in a reassuring tone and using training treats. As soon as he lets go of the ball, put it on the ground and roll it. As GSDs take pleasure in high-engagement activities, the activity itself becomes a reward. In my experience, this will always be a mixed bag. Some dogs never stop giving pushback at the retrieval stage, while others let go of the ball the moment you extend your arm toward it. Health German Shepherds were bred to be working dogs, accordingly, they are very active and require regular mental and physical stimulation. Without exercise, they are easily bored, and boredom can quickly turn into mischief. Like other working dogs, GSDs with too much-unexpended energy are more likely to destroy things, bark unnecessarily , and pester you for attention. Having a regular exercise routine for your German Shepherd will help prevent boredom. German Shepherds should get at least two sessions of exercise each day. For puppies, the general rule for the duration of each session is 5 minutes per month of age. This means that a 3-month-old pup should only be getting a maximum of two minute sessions of exercise per day while an 8-month-old should be getting a maximum of two minute daily exercise sessions. Please note that these are just general guidelines for the breed. As the pet owner, it would be up to you to observe and stick with what your dog can safely handle. Here are a few activities that can be incorporated into your German Shepherd exercise routine: Visiting the Dog Park Taking your German Shepherd to the dog park is an easy way to give your dog exercise. The dog park gives your GSD the opportunity not just to be around other dogs but also people that understand dogs and, therefore, know how to behave around them. The dog park is definitely a good place to let your pup learn to socialize and make new friends. Just be sure to supervise! There are schools that teach you how to train your own dog and there are others that train your dog directly and then pass on the commands to you. After taking an obedience class, make sure to practice the commands with your German Shepherd in different situations to stimulate both mental and physical discipline. Your German Shepherd is a very intelligent dog and one that is eager to please. Therefore, tricks training could be a rewarding activity for both you and your German Shepherd. Walking Walking is one of the most common ways to exercise your German Shepherd. The behavior exhibited during walks will set the foundation of every other activity you engage in. The first walks with your German Shepherd will probably be difficult. Your GSD may tend to pull and try to lead the way, but with training, walking will become an enjoyable activity that you and your German Shepherd will do on a daily basis. Running When your German Shepherd has been trained on how to walk properly, you can graduate to running as another form of exercise. German Shepherds are very energetic and can run long distances so running can be a good way to expel some of that Shepherd energy. Hiking Hiking is another enjoyable exercise option for you and your German Shepherd because it offers a change in scenery. If your GSD is like mine, it loves to sniff and explore new places. Hiking provides for a slightly more rigorous form of exercise while changing up the scenery from your daily walking routine. Be sure to bring enough water to both you and your dog to stay hydrated. If your GSD is like Allie, toss anything and your dog is likely to either catch it or chase after it. What can sometimes require training is getting your GSD to give the item back to you. Teaching your German Shepherd to play fetch can give both you and your dog endless hours of playtime together and exercise for your GSD. The benefit to fetch is that you can play fetch with your dog almost anywhere; on the beach, at the park, in your yard, or in the house. Remember to praise your dog for playing fetch with you. Rollerblading Rollerblading with your German Shepherd is a fun way of exercising for both you and your dog. Your German Shepherd can run alongside you as you skate, or if you are bolder, you could purchase a pulling harness and allow your GSD to pull you along. Start in a smaller controlled area to make sure you feel comfortable before moving onto the street or more public areas. Special pulling equipment should be used in order to engage in this activity safely. Also available are dog scooters you could use instead of a regular bike. Check out my full article on biking with your German Shepherd to learn more tips. Swimming Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for your German Shepherd because not only is it fun but it is also gentle on his hips and joints. Allie was a little hesitant when she had her first opportunity to swim. However, after she gradually gained confidence and eased into the water, she was hooked and did not want to get out of the water. Stand-up Paddleboarding Once you find that your German Shepherd loves being in the water, you can try some other water sports. Although stand-up paddleboarding will take some training if you live in a warmer climate this form of exercise could be a good one to teach your German Shepherd. Start by keeping the board in a place where your dog would be able to interact with it and be comfortable around it. After the initial curiosity has passed, place a treat on the board; the idea is for your GSD to get on the board to take the treat. Gradually train your GSD with different commands for on and off the board, and then wean your dog off of treats entirely. Once you think your duo is ready, practice first on the shoreline and then gradually move the board on the water. Just keep practicing and give your dog a lot of praise. Before engaging in any water sport, though, be sure to get your dog fitted for a personal floatation device PFD. Having a PFD is critical to making sure your dog is safe no matter what happens. Surfing Dog surfing is a fairly popular water sport. In fact, California hosts at least one competition each year and dogs are judged based on their confidence on the board, the size of the wave, and the length of their ride. Similar to stand-up paddleboard training, you can start training your dog at home and gradually move to the open water. You can teach him to surf along with you and later on, to surf alone. Eventually, you might even try windsurfing! Dock Diving If you find that your German Shepherd loves the water and, more specifically, jumping into the water, your GSD might be perfect for dock diving. Dock diving, also known as dock jumping, is a canine sport wherein dogs jump into a body of water and are judged based on distance from the dock. Whether or not you decide to compete, training for this would be a whole lot of fun and exercise for your dog. Agility Training Dog agility is a popular sport where dogs navigate and race through an obstacle course with the guidance of their handlers. Agility training is an incredibly fun and fulfilling activity as well as good exercise for you and your German Shepherd. Check your local area for training classes or try training on your own if you have access to an agility course or have the space to set one up. If your German Shepherd excels at agility training, you can choose to enter competitions. Whether for fun or for sport, agility training is great mental and physical stimulation for your German Shepherd. Fly Ball Fly ball is a relay race wherein dogs run through hurdles towards a spring-loaded device that releases a tennis ball. Then, they carry the ball back to their handlers on the other side, so the next team member can take his turn. There are typically four dogs in a team and the first team to have all members complete the course and cross the finish line wins the competition. While Fly ball is typically a competitive sport, many dog owners engage in this activity simply as a way to have fun with other dog owners, teach their dogs to socialize and play in a team. Treibball Treibball, also known as ball herding, is a competitive canine sport wherein dogs drive and gather large exercise balls into one specific area as they would if they were herding sheep. Schutzhund Schutzhund started as a way to determine optimal breeding lines and whether specific German Shepherds had the right traits to be suitable for work in various fields including search and rescue, odor detection, and protection. Currently, Schutzhund is comprised of three parts; tracking, obedience and protection. If you own a working line German Shepherd, Schutzhund is a fun sport to consider doing even if just for fun, and it has the added benefit of being a great form of exercise. Tracking games are good for your German Shepherd because it exercises his mind and body but also allows your GSD to practice his scenting ability. All you need to do is hide treats or toys for your dog to find. Gradually increase the difficulty to keep it challenging and make sure you give your dog lots of praise for every successful search. Hide and seek is similar to treat tracking, except you are the prize at the end of the search. Many dog owners express concerns about how tug of war can bring out aggression and a tendency to bite and clench. However, it is actually a great game to play with most dogs, and as long as your GSD can play by your rules it is a great form of exercise. Give your dog a job Since German Shepherds are working dogs another way to exercise your GSD is to give him or her a job. German Shepherds are known to be great police dogs, but they also excel at many other jobs. For example, Allie currently works in search and rescue on the weekends. The training and working helps to provide your dog with of exercise. Other examples of jobs are: therapy dogs, guide dogs, and narcotics detection. There are plenty of activities you can include in your German Shepherd exercise routine. As you engage in more activities with your GSD, your bond will become stronger. As the German Shepherd is such a fast growing breed compared to some other working breeds the opposite is actually more correct. The strain of over exercise on the skeletal make up of a youngster is often irreversible. The stretching of ligaments at too early an age, the strain on young growing joints, or the carrying of too much weight on the overall framework can and will do harm to the young puppy, and lead to problems in adulthood. Consider a young Shepherd in comparison to a 3 — 4 year old human child — certainly not ready to run a marathon even though the spirit may be willing! Should there be any chance that there is already some problem with wear on the joints of the hips and elbows, further advice would be sought as to appropriate exercise. Then, and only then, should you build the dog up to the desired level of fitness you require for whichever field you have chosen — be it show dog, trialing, agility or family companion with the adult animal — complete in growth. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best form of exercise for a youngster, for a young pup, upon tiring, can easily stop when they wish, and not keep on performing because they wish to please and keep up with you! Of course you will wish to lead train and socialise your puppy, but exercise on lead should be no more than that. Maximum time walking the dog at a fast trot of a puppy up to six months of age should be barely five minutes at one instance equivalent to a short stroll around your local block or park and then rest. Puppies need plenty of rest and sleep, just like a young toddler. Certainly they can play and romp in your back yard or in their kennel run, but they will stop when they feel tired, rest and then play again. Over six months — training on lead could extend to ten minutes if you wish, but again, moderation is the best guide, and if a puppy shows an inclination to tire, then stop! Moderation and common sense are the guidelines. Allow your puppy to grow steadily and slowly, and the fun of having a companion with which you can run your kilometres upon adulthood of the dog will not be impaired by the damage you may do,by doing too much, too soon.

Temperament German shepherd dogs, also known as GSDs, are a highly sought-after breed known for their loyalty, intelligence, and versatility. When properly socialized from an early age, these dogs are known to be great with children and other animals. They are often used as family pets and are known to be protective of their loved ones. However, due to their natural guarding instincts, German shepherds can be wary of strangers and may take some time to warm up to new people. This is why early socialization is so important for this breed. In terms of trainability, German shepherds are considered to be highly intelligent and easy to teach. They excel in obedience training, agility, and other activities that challenge their minds and bodies. However, it's worth noting that poorly bred German shepherds can have high anxiety levels, which can lead to behavioral issues such as aggression or separation anxiety. This is why it's essential to choose a reputable breeder when looking to adopt a German shepherd. Overall, German Shepherds are great companions for those who are willing to invest time and effort in training and socializing them. Training and Exercise German Shepherds are a highly active and energetic breed, and as such, require a significant amount of exercise to keep them physically and mentally healthy. A minimum of two hours of exercise should be provided to your German Shepherd each day to meet their needs. This can include activities such as walks, jogs, and hikes, and should include off-leash exercise in a secure environment such as a fenced-in backyard or a dog park. It's also important to offer a variety of activities to keep your German shepherd mentally stimulated and engaged. This could include playing fetch, agility training, or even participating in obedience training classes. This will not only help them burn off excess energy but also keep their minds active and prevent boredom. It's also important to note that exercise requirements for each German shepherd can vary depending on their age, size, and overall health. Therefore, it's always a good idea to consult with a veterinarian or a professional trainer to determine the specific exercise for your dog. There are many online resources available that can provide you with information on exercises for your German shepherd as well as tips on how to keep them physically and mentally active. In summary, German Shepherds require a considerable amount of exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being, a minimum of two hours each day, with a variety of activities to keep them engaged and stimulated. It's important to consult with a professional if you have any doubts or questions about the right amount of exercise for your German shepherd. Common Health Issues German Shepherds, like all other dog breeds, are susceptible to a variety of health issues. However, the breed is particularly prone to developing hip and elbow dysplasia, which is a genetic condition that can cause the hip or elbow joint to develop abnormally, resulting in pain, lameness, and arthritis. This condition can be debilitating and can significantly reduce the quality of life for affected dogs. To assist you in selecting a healthy German Shepherd, it's important to choose a reputable breeder who can provide documentation of genetic testing for potential health issues, such as hip and elbow scores for both parents. A responsible breeder will have their breeding dogs evaluated by a veterinarian and will have the appropriate certifications, such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA certification, to prove that their dogs have been cleared of hip and elbow dysplasia. It's also essential to remember that even with the best breeding and genetic testing, no dog is completely immune to the development of health issues. Therefore, it's important to keep an eye out for signs of pain or discomfort and to take your German Shepherd to regular vet check- ups to detect any health problems early on. Furthermore, providing your German Shepherd with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and proper veterinary care can help to prevent or manage many health issues and to ensure they live a happy and healthy life. In summary, German Shepherds, like all other breeds, are susceptible to a variety of health issues, but they are particularly prone to developing hip and elbow dysplasia. To ensure you select a healthy dog, it's important to choose a reputable breeder who can provide documentation of genetic testing and take care of your dog by providing them with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and proper veterinary care. Lifespan The German Shepherd is a well-known and beloved breed of dog that is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. These dogs have a lifespan of around 9 to 13 years, which is considered to be a normal lifespan for a large-breed dog. However, it's worth noting that the life expectancy of a German Shepherd can vary depending on various factors such as genetics, diet, exercise, and overall health care. A German shepherd that is well-cared for and receives proper nutrition and veterinary care can have a lifespan that exceeds the average. While these dogs have a relatively shorter lifespan compared to smaller breeds, they often live long, healthy lives, and provide their owners with many years of companionship and love. It's important to keep in mind that German Shepherds are prone to certain health issues that can affect their lifespans, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and certain cancers. By keeping an eye out for signs of illness and taking your German Shepherd to regular vet check- ups, you can help to detect and manage these issues early on, which can help to extend their lifespan. In summary, the typical lifespan of a German Shepherd is between 9 to 13 years old, however, this can vary depending on various factors such as genetics, diet, exercise, and overall health care. Proper care and regular check-ups are important to ensure they have a happy and healthy life. Another routine care expense for Labs is feeding. As they are a somewhat larger breed, they require a substantial amount of food to maintain their weight and energy levels. Additionally, treats, chews, and supplements can also be added to their diet, increasing the overall cost of nutrition. Proper grooming and hygiene are essential to keep a Lab healthy and comfortable. Remember that training and behavioral classes may be necessary to ensure your Lab is well-behaved and socialized, which can also be costly. These expenses should be considered when determining if a Lab is the right breed for you and your budget. How much a Labrador Retriever puppy costs depends on multiple factors, such as the breeder's reputation, the location of the pup, the bloodline, and more. Additionally, the cost may increase if the puppy comes with additional services such as health certificates, microchipping , or first vaccinations. Your pup will also need feeding, grooming, and bathing factored into their expenses, as well as beds, toys, chews, leashes, collars, harnesses, and much more. Consider the following: Buying From a Breeder vs. While adopting a Lab may be less expensive, it is essential to note that some shelters may have restrictions and requirements that need to be met before adoption. Keep in mind that the price of a Labrador based on color may vary by region and how popular that specific color is in that location. However, buyers should be cautious and avoid buying from dishonest breeders who may be selling mixed-breed dogs as purebreds. Breeders Reputation Reputable breeders who prioritize health, temperament, and breed standards usually charge more for their puppies. It's crucial to research the breeder thoroughly and ensure that they follow ethical breeding practices before making a purchase. This includes checking their breeding practices, requesting health certificates and pedigrees, and visiting their facilities in person if possible. Buyers should also be cautious of breeders who offer extremely low prices, as that might be a sign of unethical practices. Estimated Size The estimated size of an adult Labrador retriever is around about .Average Price To Buy A Lab Puppy From A Breeder The average price to buy a Lab puppy from a breeder is different from one person to the next, according to the reputation the breeder has in the community, the dog's bloodline, and their location. Again, the color of the Lab plays a significant factor as well. In addition to the cost of the puppy, there are also other expenses associated with owning a Lab. This includes routine care costs such as food, toys, grooming supplies, and veterinary visits for vaccinations and check-ups. Owners should also budget for unexpected expenses such as emergency veterinary care or unexpected illnesses. Remember that a reputable breeder may charge more for their puppies, but they are more likely to provide you with a healthy, well-socialized puppy from a good bloodline. Average Cost To Adopt A Lab Puppy Adopting a Lab puppy is generally less expensive than buying one from a breeder, but the costs can still vary widely. However, it's crucial to research adoption agencies thoroughly to ensure that they are reputable and the dogs are healthy and well-cared for before making a decision. You don't want to bring a sickly pup into your home, just to end up spending more on medical bills than you had anticipated. However, the costs don't stop there. Once you have your furry friend, ongoing expenses include food, vet bills, grooming, and more. In addition, Labs are known for their love of exploration and adventure, which means they have a penchant for getting lost. You don't want to get a new puppy with the understanding that the breed may be high maintenance, and then you lose track of your dog. The collar uses GPS and cellular technology to track your dog's location in real-time, so you can quickly locate your pet if they ever wander off. The collar also includes additional features such as activity monitoring and geofencing to alert you if your dog leaves a designated area. While the initial cost of the collar may seem high, it can save you money in the long run by preventing the loss or theft of your beloved Lab. Labrador Retriever Breed Guide Labrador Retrievers are outgoing and generally have a friendly disposition toward others. They are loyal, affectionate and make excellent family pets. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which makes them great for first-time dog owners. Due to their friendly nature, they also make excellent therapy dogs and are often used in service roles. Labrador Retrievers generally come in three colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. The coat is short, dense, and water-resistant, which makes them excellent swimmers. Labs can be medium to large dogs that weigh about 55 to 80 pounds on average, with the males usually outweighing the females by ten pounds. Typically, they're around two feet tall inches , and the males will have about a one-inch height advantage over the females. The average lifespan for a Labrador Retriever is around 12 years, although some can live up to 14 years. They are all around healthy, but like all dogs, there are specific ailments that you're more likely to encounter with a Lab, like obesity, ear infections, and hip dysplasia. As for lifetime care costs, they can vary depending on factors such as food, vet bills, and grooming expenses. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Labrador Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog from a shelter is usually less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder. Typically, dog shelters will include initial vaccinations, any spaying or neutering services needed, along with essential veterinary care up front. That helps cut down on some of the initial costs that owners usually spend when they first bring a puppy home. However, it's not uncommon that breeders will also at least include the first vaccinations for the pup upon its release to your family. Another option to reduce the cost of owning a Lab is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may already be trained and require less attention and socialization than a puppy, which can save on training costs and time. Moreover, older dogs may have lower veterinary bills since they may not require as many check-ups or preventative care as a puppy. Finally, another way to save money on the lifetime costs of owning a Labrador Retriever is to invest in preventative care. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary check-ups to catch potential health issues early on. While preventive care may require an upfront investment, it can ultimately save money by avoiding expensive medical bills down the line. Final Thoughts: The Cost of Owning a Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds to own, but they can be somewhat high maintenance after you bring them into your home. However, there are ways to reduce costs, such as adopting from a shelter or rescue organization, buying an older dog instead of a puppy, and being mindful of routine care costs. You can put off spending on these things until the budget allows. However, give some serious thought to investing in an emergency fund, as this would take a big worry off your mind in case of any unexpected trips to the vet. The costs will be a bit higher at first while you get your dog the shots it requires and pay for the frequent visits to the vet. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Once your dog is an adult, it will not require as many vet visits and will only need booster shots every few years, so the average monthly costs will be much lower. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. We recommend purchasing a high-quality brand with real meat like chicken, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. The protein in meat will help build muscle and provide the energy your dog needs to stay healthy. High protein diets will also help your dog stay full longer, and it will be less likely to come looking for food. Foods with corn as the top ingredient are mostly empty calories that will leave your pet feeling hungry and looking for more food, potentially causing it to become obese. During the shedding seasons of spring and fall, you will likely need to increase the brushing to several times a week to help keep the fur off your furniture and floor. Professional grooming can also help with teeth brushing and nail clipping. This medication can also help prevent heartworm. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Less - The Labrador Retriever is a medium to large-sized , short-coupled, powerfully-built dog with a short, dense, water-resistant coat; small, drop ears; and a short, thick otter-like tail carried level with the back or with a slight upward curve. The length of body is equal to or only slightly longer than the height at the withers, and the distance from the elbows to the ground is equal to one-half the height at the withers. Balance, outline, intelligence, temperament and movement are of overriding importance. The Labrador Retriever is a breed of moderation, thoroughly sound, and willing and able to do its work. The Labrador Retriever is a dog without exaggeration, so light, weedy dogs; long, low-stationed dogs; and cloddy, lumbering dogs are to be equally penalized. The Labrador Retriever is an enthusiastic hunter with a good nose and a soft mouth. They excel in all performance activities. Another essential characteristic of the Labrador Retriever is the short, dense, double coat that protects the dog when retrieving from water. Labrador Retrievers are noted for their excellent temperaments. This breed is friendly, outgoing and eager to please. They are extremely intelligent and easily trained to perform a variety of complex tasks. These dogs were brought to England, probably on fishing boats. Originally black in color, the first recorded yellow Labrador appeared in a litter born in .Chocolates were also recorded at about the same time, but never achieved the same level of popularity as the blacks and yellows. Originally bred to retrieve from water, the modern Labrador Retriever has proven to be one of the most versatile breeds, excelling in hunt tests and field trials, in obedience and agility events, and also as service dogs. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article.

By knowing about health concerns specific to Toy Poodles, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen inToy Poodlesto give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Toy Poodles. At the end of the booklet, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Poodle looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your Toy Poodle is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Toy Poodles are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections—the same ones that all dogs can get—such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination, which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, herage, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Toy Poodles. It is a serious disease that may causeor worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Roundworm egg as seen under the microscope. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest herskin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, and whipworms can get into hersystem in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Poodle is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovariesand usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Toy Poodles Illustration of degenerative valves in the heart. Over time, some dogs will develop heart failure. Heart Disease Heart failure is a leading cause of death among Toy Poodles in their golden years. Most heart disease in dogs is caused by weakening of a valve. A heart valve slowly becomes deformed so that it no longer closes tightly. Blood then leaks back around this valve and strains the heart. Pets with heart valve disease sometimes called mitral valve disease have a heart murmur. The same tests will need to be repeated at least every year to monitor the condition. If heart valve disease is diagnosed early, we may be able to prescribe medications that could prolong his life for many years. Veterinary dental care and fatty acid supplementation can help prevent heart disease and weight control can help diminish symptoms. Poodles are susceptible to a condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosis, in which a small vessel that carries blood between two parts of the heart does not close shortly after birth as it should. This results in too much blood being carried to the lungs, fluid build-up, and strain on the heart. Outward signs may be mild or you may see coughing, fatigue during exercise, weight loss, shortness of breath, or weakness in the hind limbs. We listen for a specific type of heart murmur to diagnose this problem during his examinations. If your pal has this condition, we may recommend surgery to close the problematic vessel. Toy Poodles are especially prone to a life-threatening heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in which the heart becomes so large, thin, and weak that it can no longer effectively pump blood to the body. As this problem advances, he may act weak or tired, faint or collapse, breathe in a labored way, or cough. The adrenal glands are situated along the vena cava the large vein in the abdominal cavity near each kidney. These small glands release many important hormones in the body. This is a common problem in dogs, and your Poodle is more likely than other dogs to be affected. The condition usually develops slowly, and the early signs are easily missed. Symptoms include drinking and urinating more than normal, increased appetite and reduced activity level. Later, a potbelly, thin skin, and hair loss are characteristic. Treatment usually includes oral medications, and requires close coordination with us to ensure correct dosing. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Poodles have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars and require daily insulin injections. It is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Toy Poodles. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Normal Knee Illustration of patellar luxation. Notice how the knee cap has moved out of the groove it normally resides in. You might notice that he runs along and suddenly picks up a back leg and skips or hops for a few strides. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from popping out of place. The exact cause of this condition is still not completely understood, but it is thought to be a problem with blood supply to the hip, which causes the femoral head the top of the thigh bone to become brittle and easily fracture. Usually occurring between six and nine months of age, it causes pain and lameness in one or both rear legs, and often requires surgery. Intervertebral disc disease. Note how the cushion of the disc materal has extruded and puts pressure on the spinal nerves. The disease is caused when the jelly-like cushion between one or more vertebrae slips or ruptures, causing the disc to press on the spinal cord. If your dog is suddenly unable or unwilling to jump up, go up stairs, is reluctant to move around, has a hunched back, cries out, or refuses to eat or go potty, he is likely in severe pain. He may even drag his back feet or be suddenly paralyzed and unable to get up or use his back legs. Call us or an emergency clinic immediately! For less severe cases, rest and medication may resolve the problem. As with so many other diseases, weight control helps to prevent this problem. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders which occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Toy Poodles are particularly prone to some relatively rare diseases of the blood. If the immune system destroys red blood cells, your dog quickly becomes anemic, weak, and lethargic. His gums will look whitish or yellow instead of the normal bright pink color. Sometimes an emergency transfusion of red blood cells or platelets is needed. Epilepsy There are three types of seizures in dogs: reactive, secondary, and primary. Secondary seizures are the result of a brain tumor, stroke, or trauma. If no other cause can be found, the disease is called primary, or idiopathic epilepsy. This problem is often an inherited condition, with Toy Poodles commonly afflicted. If your friend is prone to seizures, they will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control, with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and effectiveness. Note the length of the seizure, and call us or an emergency hospital. Unfortunately, Toy Poodles can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. Glaucoma, an eye condition that affects Toy Poodles and people too, is an extremely painful disease that rapidly leads to blindness if left untreated. Symptoms include squinting, watery eyes, bluing of the cornea the clear front part of the eye , and redness in the whites of the eyes. Pain is rarely noticed by pet owners though it is frequently there and can be severe. People who have certain types of glaucoma often report it feels like being stabbed in the eye with an ice pick! Glaucoma is a medical emergency. Cataract Cataracts are a common cause of blindness in older Poodles. Many dogs adjust well to losing their vision and get along just fine. Surgery to remove cataracts and restore sight may also be an option. Distichiasis is a condition caused by extra hairs that grow inside of the eyelid and rub on the surface of the eye. This is one of the most commonly inherited diseases in dogs, and your Poodle is more likely than other dogs to develop this painful condition. If untreated, these abnormal hairs can cause corneal ulcers and chronic eye pain. Several treatment options are available, and the prognosis is good once the hairs have been permanently removed. Kidney Disorder Fanconi syndrome is a disorder of the kidneys that allows vital blood nutrients to escape into the urine. Because these nutrients are so important, affected Poodles can experience excessive urination and thirst, weight loss and weakness from abnormal electrolyte levels. Symptoms usually appear between two and six years of age. The severity and course of the disease varies from dog to dog, with some remaining stable for years and others falling into fatal kidney failure. Skin Conditions Poodles are prone to a variety of skin problems, including one called sebaceous adenitis. The earlier the skin is checked out, the better his results. Skin Cancer Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a common form of skin cancer that in some Poodles tends to occur in the toenail bed, the base of the nail where the toenail itself forms and grows. If a toe or nail starts to look lumpy or swollen, or if the nail keeps breaking off, leaving a pink lump protruding from the broken end, call right away. If we determine cancer is the cause, amputation of his toe is needed to prevent the cancer from spreading. Taking Care of Your Toy Poodle at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Poodle live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. Daily brushing and regular grooming is needed every weeks to keep her coat beautiful. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. She is well suited to apartment life as long as she is given daily walks and short play sessions. She is highly intelligent and can be taught to perform a variety of tricks to keep her mentally stimulated. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Toy Poodle needs help. The Poodle comes in many beautiful solid colours, including black, white, brown, silver, cream, blue and apricot. Coat and Care requirements The nature of the Poodle coat makes it a high maintenance breed. The non-shedding, curly, thick coat has many advantages, but for the comfort and hygiene of the dog and health of the skin, it needs to be brushed regularly to remove dead hair from the coat and keep free of tangles. It is recommended that he be bathed and clipped every weeks. The non-shedding nature has great appeal to allergy sufferers. These designer dogs are bred with the intent of making them purebred dogs, so some breeders offer multigenerational litters. With such a mix of parent breeds and genes, Australian Labradoodles can vary in their size and looks. They usually have low-shedding, curly fur coats that come in a range of colors and patterns, as well as a medium-to-large build, a long snout, and floppy ears. Their thick coats resemble wool or fleece, giving them a teddy bear look. With the gundog and all-purpose hunting breeds, they are intelligent and hardworking. Exercise Like the parent breeds, Australian Labradoodles love to work. They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation each day, including a lot of play time. They tend to be calmer than Labradoodles and enjoy time with children and other pets. Image Credit: Josiah Gaulke, Shutterstock Training Australian Labradoodles come from intelligent, highly trainable parent breeds that perform well when they have a job to do. They do best with positive-reinforcement training and early socialization, which is important for preventing dog or people aggression and reactivity. Purebred dogs are often riddled with health problems because of their limited gene pool, but having up to six breeds contributing to the Australian Labradoodle may minimize the risk of inherited disorders compared to purebred dogs. However, it does depend on the health of the parents, and not every breeder is focused on producing healthy offspring. Australian Labradoodles are a great choice for therapy work as well. The original goal of the cross was to produce an alternative to the popular Labradoodle. Though not recognized by breed associations, Goldendoodles have been produced for several generations. Goldendoodles can vary in size, coat color, and coat texture according to their parents. Generally, they have round heads, broad muzzles, a heavily feathered tail, and floppy ears with a long coat with straight, wavy, or curly texture and a range of colors. They come in Standard, Miniature, or Toy variants from the Poodle. Most take after the Golden Retriever side with a friendly, affectionate, and trustworthy personality. They can be high energy and playful, so they make good family pets. Goldendoodles are prone to separation anxiety, however. Because of the gundog lineage, Goldendoodles have natural Retriever instincts. Exercise Goldendoodles were created from two active gundog and water retriever breeds. As a mix, they tend to have high energy and require a lot of physical and mental enrichment to thrive. However, a Goldendoodle raised in a mellow household will usually settle and enjoy more downtime. Both breeds respond well to positive reinforcement and consistency in training. Early socialization and conditioning are important to have a well-adjusted puppy. Some litters end up susceptible to health problems from both parents. Some of the common conditions seen in Goldendoodles include hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand disease, megaesophagus, skin allergies, ear infections, sensitive stomach, and a range of cancers. Image Credit: Megan Betteridge, Shutterstock Suitable For: Goldendoodles are versatile dogs that can thrive in a variety of homes, including family homes with children , with active owners, and in rural environments. Weight Gain Tendency Labradoodles have a tendency to enjoy food to the point of gaining weight and becoming obese. With a healthy diet, they are less prone to uncontrolled weight gain. Here are some fundamental differences: Their work ethic or desire to work is slightly different. The Labrador Retriever is a sold working dog that can continue working long after the work is done. This dog works because he enjoys the work. The Golden Retriever will do the work required because he loves and wants to please his owner but is ready to quit when the owner quits. Their motivation to work is slightly different. Whereas the Golden Retriever works to please the owner, the Labrador Retriever is more treat-motivated. As long as he continues to get treats, he wants to continue doing the job at hand. Labrador Retrievers seem to have a higher energy level and are stronger than the Golden Retrievers. Both dogs are loyal to their family members, but the Labrador Retriever is slightly more reserved and mellow. If a stranger would come into the home, the Labrador Retriever is more likely to stand back in the corner waiting for a bit while the Golden Retriever would rush up to the stranger to be pet. The Labradoodles take a little longer to access the situation and ensure that everything is cool before approaching a strange situation or person. Many owners say that their social skills are probably the most significant difference between the two breeds. Both dogs interact very well with children and other dogs. Temperament Labrador Retrievers are also more forgiving than Golden Retrievers, and this trait often carries on to the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. The Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, wants to keep on going like the Energizer Bunny. While both dogs interact well with their owners, Golden Retrievers are more sociable with strangers. Goldendoodles interact well with all people in the home, whereas Labradoodles are more dominant with certain family members. Labradoodles s are more territorial than Goldendoodles and also enjoy spending more time outside the home. Labrador Retrievers would be perfectly content staying in the home laying by your feet. These social and temperament traits that are possessed by the Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers can often be found in the Goldendoodles and Labradoodles Size The thing that most affects the size of these dogs is what type and size Poodle they were bred with. Other things can affect the size of the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle include genetics, size of both parents, birth order, gender, health, and nutrition. Standard Poodles can go from 40 to 80 pounds while Golden Retrievers average 55 to 75 pounds, and Labrador Retrievers go from 55 to 80 pounds. Keeping these figures in mind, you can see that there can be a lot of variances. They both have well-defined bodies. Goldendoodles tend to have longer bodies than Labrador Retrievers, but most breeders claim that the Labs outweigh the Goldens by the time they reach adulthood. Although standard Poodles are the size most commonly used in breeding to create Labradoodles and Goldendoodles, they also use the toy and miniature Poodles. Appearance Both Goldendoodle and Labradoodle dogs are beautiful dogs. When people see them for the first time they often wonder about the breed. The Goldendoodle also has a much fluffier tail. When you go to buy a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle, the breeder may ask what type of coat you prefer. Wool coat — This coat has a harsh kinky texture typically found on a Poodle. Fleece coat — This coat has a soft wavy texture and is most commonly found on both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. Color Hair length and consistency is not the only difference between the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle. Their colors tend to vary quite a bit as well. Labradoodles seem to be born with more color variations than Goldendoodles. Labradoodles may come in colors like chocolate, black, cream, red, white, yellow or a combination coat. Goldendoodles are usually in the areas of gold, caramel, apricot or red spectrum. The Labradoodle tends to shed a little more than the Goldendoodle but is also easier to groom than the Goldendoodle. You will save you time, money, and loads of frustration…take my word for it! Get Your Copy Today! Working Ability Both breeds will make excellent family dogs, but their love of people and willingness to approach strangers often take them out of the running for guarding purposes. This is especially true with Goldendoodles, who will not hesitate to walk up to a stranger and try making a new friend. Goldendoodles are just happy, happy dogs that are always smiling, which is the opposite of what you want in a guard dog. The Labradoodle tends to be more guarded and reserved when it comes to new situations, people or space, and this could be misconstrued as aggression if the dog was not properly socialized. The Labradoodle is considered a much better watchdog because he or she will bark when strangers come to the home, whereas the Goldendoodle seldom barks. Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers have long been known for their ability to hunt and retrieve their prey. These same qualities are passed on to the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. They love the outdoors and enjoy being around water. Service Dog Ability Both the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle have excellent service dog ability due to their friendliness, intelligence, loyalty and natural temperament. They have the ability to make people smile and laugh. Many people look at Goldendoodles as being clowns and even goofy-looking. Qualities like this are what make them such wonderful therapy dogs. Personality traits like this may be frowned upon for those looking for a guard dog but are highly valued when looking for a therapy dog. They have a natural temperament for it. They have higher intelligence. They have a better work ethic. Intelligent disobedience is when the dog will disobey a command if he or she believes the situation could be dangerous. This type of training is challenging, but many Labrador Retrievers seem to pick it up very quickly. This training ability has made Labradoodles the better choice for seeing-eye dogs, guide dogs and basic service dogs. Another trait that makes Labradoodles better for service dogs is their accepting and loving nature. This trait is vital when it comes time for the trainer to hand over the service animal to a new owner. As intelligent and loyal as German shepherds may be, they have the reputation of being a one-man dog. Labrador Retrievers have all the same wonderful qualities but do not have the one-man dog issue, which can make them better service animals. When their training is done, they are able to transfer their loyalty and affection to the new owner much quicker. This unique ability also helps Labradoodle make effective service animals. This tendency comes from the Labrador Retriever. Approximately one in five Labrador Retrievers carries a genetic mutation that gives them a predisposition to gain weight according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This not only contributes to the dog being overweight but is said to improve their ability to participate in more extended training sessions, especially if the training is food or treat-based. This gene mutation helps the Lab in his training because to be good service animals, they must train often and from an early age. Health Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are both relatively healthy dogs but, like most dogs, they do have certain diseases that they are prone to inheriting due to their breed. These diseases typically come from both sides. Labrador Retrievers are prone to develop: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Labradoodles are often chosen for service dog work. However, Goldendoodles are also very popular for therapy work. Which dog sheds more Labradoodle or Goldendoodle? The higher Poodle genetics makes this generation of Labradoodle to be the most likely not to shed out of all of the first generation makeups. They are also considered to be the most hypoallergenic. Do Labradoodles Goldendoodles bark a lot? Labradoodles are very vocal and communicative canines. In fact, they fall under the mild-barkers category. They usually bark for a reason. Not all Goldendoodles bark, but many do. Some only bark when they are in public due to excitement. Others bark all the time. Both the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle can be equally amazing companions, love children, and are make great family dogs. Doodles generally tend to suffer from a higher rate of separation anxiety than other dog breeds. Due to their highly sociable traits, they do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. These dogs want and need to be around people. Hershey the Multigen Labradoodle Both are known for their friendly and outgoing nature; Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are sweet-natured and enthusiastic breeds. These dogs thrive on strong, dependable relationships with humans, require moderate attention stimulation, and love human company. Both breeds are very intelligent and generally quite easy to train. As a pet, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are both obedient, loyal, loving, and affectionate. Neither the Standard-size Labradoodle nor Goldendoodle would be well suited for full-time indoor or apartment living, as they enjoy spending time outdoors, playing games like fetch and tug-of-war, and love taking long walks. These active breeds are always on the go and often quite amusing and entertaining to watch while at play. When properly socialized from a young age, they can get along well with small children and other pets, often making friends with other dogs quickly due to their social nature. Due to their need for human attention and eagerness to please and impress their owners, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles generally respond well to basic training. These bright dogs have the ability to learn to perform almost any task a trainer is willing to take the time to teach them. Big Goldendoodle! The Standard Goldendoodle does tend to be larger than the Standard Labradoodle. Puppies can still fall above or below their projected adult weights, especially when their parents are two different sizes, for example, if one parent is a Mini and one is a standard. Make sure the Poodle in your Doodle is a size you could handle because they might be as tall or taller! Weight is not as important. Such an awesome picture!! When she called, they explained that all the puppies in their program must pass a series of tests to qualify. One of the tests is a stress test, which includes a variety of loud noises, such as honking car horns, back-firing cars, gunshots, screeching brakes, etc. They said most breeds would panic and run at some or all of these kinds of sounds. The Yellow Labs consistently did the best in these stress tests for staying calm and in control and remained the most stable and dependable. This obviously is extremely important to the ultimate owner, who must depend entirely on his dog for his life when he is making his way thru busy traffic. The mixing of poodles with labradors was originally developed to be shed-free Seeing Eye Dogs in Australia this is where and how the whole story of Labradoodles started. The F1 has a higher incidence of shedding, while the higher generations are closer to non-shedding. .The F1 and higher generations also look completely different as well. Most Labradoodle breeders no longer breed the F1 generation Labradoodle due to the higher incidence of shedding, so they are harder to find. Do Labradoodles get curlier as they get older? No, Labradoodles coats do not change from curly to straight or vice versa. There is a puppy coat change, but the coat type will be primarily the same. Do not expect the Labradoodle puppy coat type to change. The Goldendoodle Goldendoodle adult coats can grow 4 to 6 inches long and have a wavy or curly texture. More curl usually equals less shedding, and straighter hair usually means a higher chance of shedding but not always. Conceptually, Golden Retrievers influence the Goldendoodle making them more energetic. They are affectionate and love to be with you and can get so happy to see you they can have a hard time not jumping on you and must be trained not to. They make their decisions well before they decide to come running to you. Goldendoodles can also be more mouthy than Labradoodles. They will want to taste you! Their natural desire to retrieve may keep their mouths occupied, but putting your thumb in their mouth can also do the trick with some of the more stubborn puppies or just by doing a high pitch yelp whenever their teeth touch your skin. This is especially useful with younger puppies. I refer to the Goldendoodle as a very zestful and happy-with-life kind of dog. Both doodles share similar temperaments smart, family-friendly, and easily-trained. Both doodles come in various sizes mini, medium, and standard and many colors. Both are loyal, loving family members. As for which doodle would work best for you… we find that people who are loyal to labrador retrievers generally want a Labradoodle, and folks who have grown up with golden retrievers typically want a Goldendoodle. The great thing is you get to choose! In intelligence and allergy friendliness, both are about par. Both are half retrievers and half poodle, intelligent and moderately active dogs. Look up and read the breed descriptions for each of the parent breeds, and then believe their breed descriptions. Neither will be a low-energy lapdog. For an insightful article on the differences between a Goldendoodle and a Labradoodle in training and temperament, please read the article by Gwendy Joysen, author of The Balanced Canine — Link to Article Me and my Doods at the dog park. .Do NOT get a Doodle mixed with a dog from a working-class bloodline unless you are very active. Do NOT let the dog become overweight. This is vital with these breeds. Almost all Goldens and Labs I see in public are usually overweight. A correct specimen is rarely over 75 pounds for a large male unless the dog is oversized or fat. Feed high-quality dog food. Clean the ears regularly — both breeds tend towards ear issues and food and skin allergies. Groom them regularly. The only drawback about owning a non-shedding dog is their high-maintenance coats it will just continue to grow and then eventually mat if not properly cared for. Talk to your groomer about an appropriate grooming schedule. Health Concerns in both breeds: As a hybrid cross, they grow healthier and live longer than either parent line. The only genetic diseases they can be prone to would be those shared by both parent breeds. The Goldendoodle and Labradoodle both tend to be a rather healthy dog, but Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers are all susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. They can also suffer from a number of inheritable eye disorders, so it is important that annual CERF Canine Eye Registration Foundation exams are performed before breeding. Both are prone to ear infections and yeast infections in the ears from moisture in the ears. It is important to make sure to keep them dry. The F1b Generation in the Labradoodle is much curlier and less likely to shed. There are however straighter F1b Labradoodles as well. So it all depends on what you like in regards to curl and how much grooming your willing to pay for. Allergy Friendly? Yes, First Generation Goldendoodles and Labradoodles have proven to live successfully with most families with mild dog allergies. Just remember, the more Poodle in your Doodle the better they will be for shedding and allergie concerns. The most obvious answer is that the Goldendoodle is the result of breeding a Golden Retriever with a Poodle while the Labradoodle is the result of breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. Blue Ridge Goldendoodles does not breed Labradoodles, however, we want you to be able to compare the two breeds. When it comes to choosing between the two, it really comes down to what you want in a dog. They tend to be more calm than the Labradoodle when taken into the hospital or nursing home. Both dogs are good choices when it comes to serving as guide dogs, although the Labradoodle might have a slight edge. Both dogs are loyal to their masters and are extremely friendly, but sometimes the Labradoodle will be apprehensive about entering a new space, such as your home. They will tend to check things out thoroughly before they settle in. The Goldendoodle, on the other hand, feels right at home wherever he is. To enhance this innate sense of trust and balance, Blue Ridge Goldendoodles makes it their priority to continually breed for the best possible temperament. When it comes to using the dogs for working, the Labradoodle is generally stronger than the Goldendoodle. If the dog might be needed to pull a load or be trained for other physical service, the Labradoodle would generally be the better choice. When it comes to looks and grooming, the Goldendoodle will typically have hair that is much longer than the Labradoodle. If you base your decision on the quality of the coat and the general beauty of the dog, you might give more consideration to purchasing a Goldendoodle. Speaking of coats, both dogs are categorized according to their coat with regard to potential shedding. In either dog, those with an F1 coat might tend to shed a little more than those with an F1B coat. One final difference to note is that the Labradoodle tends to weigh more than a comparable sized Goldendoodle. If you are specifically looking for the more playful and active dog, the Goldendoodle generally fits the bill. So, the question of Labradoodles vs Goldendoodles simply boils down to what you want in a dog and the purpose they will serve in your life. Both dogs are smart and easy to train. They are also similar in size, and the variety of sizes that are available. They are also both loving, loyal and make great family members. Just remember that either type will require plenty of exercise and play time. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord.
