They can also create loud and resounding barks to alert you in the case of an intruder. As a Sheepadoodle owner, you may frequently see your dog trying to herd children and other pets, accompanying the behavior with nipping. However, training should begin early in life, and you should expose your puppy to new people, places, pets, sights, and sounds. Sheepadoodle puppy standing on the grass. Keep up with mental and physical stimulation from the puppy stage and adulthood. The goal is to help your dog learn and maintain positive characteristics. The best way to ensure your dog acquires favored traits is by introducing a reward-based training method. When raising a Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle, your dog will manifest a strong desire to learn and please you. Both dogs listen to commands, and with consistent training, they learn what you want and never forget. Lifespan Doodles are generally healthy dogs, and with proper nutrition , exercise, and regular veterinary care, you can expect your Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle to live longer than many other breeds. How long do Bernedoodles live? With good care, feeding, breeding, and exercise, your dog can live more than the average time frame. On the other hand, Sheepadoodles have a lifespan ranging from 12 to 15 years , with others living longer than this. Cost The cost of a Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle puppy varies depending on the breeder, size, age, and color. Bernedoodles have an adorable tri-color coat that makes them more precious. Bernedoodle vs. Sheepadoodle: Final Thoughts Picking between the Bernedoodle and Sheepadoodle can be a headache for anyone. While both have desirable similarities, thanks to their Poodle parents, they have distinctive traits you can use to choose the one that suits you and your family. A Bernedoodle is suitable for homes with limited space and smaller children. However, if you choose this dog, expect to pay a little more. On the other hand, a Sheepadoodle is less expensive but requires plenty of space at home to play around. The dog is highly energetic, so you should schedule daily exercise. Bernedoodles tend to have a larger range in prices, and may be more expensive, especially if you are looking for a desirable tri-color pattern. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle: Appearance Size When you say Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle, most people instantly think of a giant. This is the standard, and arguably the most common, size of Sheepadoodles and Bernedoodles. There are toy and mini sizes for those who want a tinier version. Tiny, Mini, Medium, Standard All of the size ranges are pretty comparable. For example, the Standard Bernedoodle averages between pounds, while the Standard Sheepadoodle ranges from pounds. Additionally, Bernedoodles may appear a little leaner throughout. Colors Coloring is a category where the Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle vary significantly. While both breeds can come in a variety of colors, there are patterns that are more similar for each. Sheepadoodles are generally more than one color. The main consideration when it comes to the coat is the generation of doodle. The coat needs regular brushing to prevent any matting. Frequent brushing is the best way to prevent matting. The Bernedoodle and Sheepadoodle both require brushing at minimum every other day. If they recently got a haircut , you may be able to space out brushings out to every days. I have an F1BB doodle with a curly coat that would often get matted, despite my daily brushing. Read More: Do Sheepadoodles Shed? The Bernedoodle is a goofy pup who is affectionate and playful. The Sheepadoodle are good natured and sociable dogs who make great companions. Both of these dogs make fairly good watch dogs and guard dogs as far as doodles are concerned. Not only can their size be intimidating, but they both are protective and yet not aggressive. Both of these breeds enjoy spending time with their family—potentially an excessive amount that can turn into separation anxiety. Sheepadoodles in particular can often be guilty of this. Activity Level There are some differences in activity levels between the Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle. They usually require about an hour of exercise per day. At minimum they should get about a half an hour each day. Without proper exercise, both breeds may exhibit destructive behavior due to their built up energy. Trainability Both Sheepadoodles vs Bernedoodles have their challenges with training, although neither are too difficult to train. They are both highly intelligent and curious, which can result in a bit of a stubborn puppy. For this reason, they may be more of a challenge than other doodle breeds for a first-time dog owner. These dogs both have a working dog heritage, so providing them with adequate mental stimulation is important. This can easily be done through scent walks, teaching them fun new party tricks, or by making training fun for them with these brain games. They enjoy having tasks and training to do which gives them a sense of purpose. The Bernedoodle and Sheepadoodle both have the potential to be great family dogs. The Bernedoodle may have a slight advantage in this category. Sheepadoodles can have some herding tendencies from their Old English Sheepdogs heritage. They may try to herd other pets or children by circling or nipping at them. Some Bernedoodles may have some prey drive, so they may need extra time to learn how to act appropriately with small animals in the house or around the yard. Both the Sheepadoodle or Bernedoodle can make wonderful family pets. With proper socialization as a puppy , both breeds can learn appropriate behaviors around children and pets. Both breeds have an average life expectancy of years. Potential Illnesses Both of these breeds benefit from the health advantages that mixed breeds enjoy from their genetic diversity, but there are still health issues to be on the lookout for in the Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle. I have Healthy Paws pet insurance and for an affordable price I get peace of mind that my pup will be able to get any necessary veterinary care. Should you get a Sheepadoodle or Bernedoodle? The conclusion… Bernedoodles tend to be slightly more expensive than Sheepadoodles. While both of these breeds are prone to separation anxiety, Sheepadoodles tend to be a bit worse. Sheepadoodles have herding tendencies which may be problematic with small children where Bernedoodles have a prey drive which may pose issues with other smaller pets in the household. While both the Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle require lots of exercise, the Sheepadoodle requires more. Compare the Bernedoodle. Both dog breeds are excellent family dogs, but each has unique characteristics that might sway your selection one way or the other. Here are the seven key differences between Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles to consider when reserving one of these designer dog breeds. Parent Breeds and History The Sheepadoodle is a hybrid of a poodle and an Old English sheepdog, while a Bernedoodle combines a poodle with a Bernese mountain dog. Sheepadoodles were initially bred as companion dogs in the s, with the idea that the poodle would give the Old English sheepdog a hypoallergenic coat. The Bernedoodle is a more common but much newer breed. Finding the perfect puppy is hard and the perfect breeder — even harder See what Doodle Pups we have for you! Get Started Sheepadoodles vs Bernedoodles Size Size is the first factor that sets these designer dogs apart. Bernedoodles have a wider range of height 21 to 29 inches and weight 10 to 90 pounds. Conversely, Sheepadoodles can weigh from 45 to 80 pounds and are usually 13 to 24 inches tall. Bernese mountain dogs are bigger than the average English Sheepdog, so it makes sense that their hybrid breed is also bigger. However, Bernedoodles puppy for sale come in mini sizes with a miniature Poodle parent, as well as medium and standard sizes when bred with a standard Poodle. You may also consider a mini Sheepadoodle, a crossbreed of a Sheepdog and a Toy Poodle. Reputable breeders can provide more information about the purebred parents so you can estimate whether the puppies will grow up to be smaller or larger dogs. Sheepadoodle coats are usually red and white, gray and white, or black and white. Their fur also tends to fade to white as they age, which is a poodle trait. Bernedoodles offer all options of straight, wavy or curly hair. Sheepadoodles only have course, curly hair. If you struggle with mild to moderate allergies, we highly suggest getting a wavy coat Bernedoodle. Get Started Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Personality Both these doodle breeds are hybrids with working dogs, so they need a lot of activity. However, Bernedoodles tend to be calmer and more relaxed than Sheepadoodles, especially when they get out of the puppy stage. They need less exercise compared to a Sheepadoodle. Sheepadoodles are usually the higher-energy doodle of the two dog breeds, requiring lots of mental and physical stimulation. However, they can develop separation anxiety when left alone for too long. They do well as emotional support animals since they develop a strong bond with humans. Early socialization is essential for these dogs since they have watchdog tendencies. The Bernedoodle and the Sheepadoodle do well with younger kids and other animals. Bernedoodle and Sheepadoodle owners report that their pets are good with small children. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Health Conditions Breeders conduct careful health testing to make sure both purebred parent dogs are free of underlying genetic concerns. However, dogs in the doodle family do have some common health issues. Large dogs may develop joint problems with age, but a good diet and lots of exercise can help them lead healthier lives. Sheepadoodle vs. Bernedoodle specific health issues may include skin, heart, ear and eye conditions for the Sheepadoodle. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Average Life Span Dog lovers will be relieved to know that these pets have relatively long life spans. A mini Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle will tend to live longer than a standard Sheepadoodle or Bernedoodle. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Family Lifestyle The bottom line? Bernedoodles are also a little better than Sheepadoodles with younger children. However, you should have experience training large breeds or consider a trainer to help you with this doodle breed. On the other hand, a Sheepadoodle may come out ahead for your family if you have a larger home with lots of outdoor space. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Temperament When it comes to character, there are some important distinctions between the two types of Doodles. Bernedoodle owners tend to describe their pups as gentle, loving, and caring. These are qualities that they inherit from the calmer Bernese. In fact, Bernies are generally known as being fairly low-energy dogs on the Doodle spectrum, at least. They have more laid-back personalities and often just go with the flow. However, be sure not to forget that watchdog part of their nature. Sheepadoodles, with their herding instincts, are a little more high-energy — although Doodling them has mellowed them out somewhat. It has also made them easier to train than their OES ancestors. Nevertheless, they are still great fun to be active and exercise with. People with Sheepas often describe them as playful and silly. Yet, just like Bernies, they can be a little on the protective side. However, this usually manifests itself in slightly different ways. For example, if you fail to take the lead in this relationship, you might find yourself or your children being wrangled up and hustled about by a bossy hound. While this is the most popular coat type, Bernedoodles can also have solid, parti, and merle-colored coats. The latter one especially is becoming more and more highly prized. See Also: Click the image Sheepadoodles, on the other hand, are usually just two colors — most often black and white, but sometimes grey and white, or red and white. Sheepas are also more likely to fade in color as they age — a phenomenon that perhaps can be explained by the Poodle Fading Gene. The reason for this is that hair is still shed, but rather than ending up on your floor or furniture, it becomes tangled up with healthy hair causes knots and even matting. Both Bernese and OES have incredibly thick, double coats that are prone to shed. The OSE, in particular, is known to be an extremely heavy shedder. So, if your Sheepadoodle does get this kind of fur, they will need frequent brushing to keep it off your floor and furniture. Finally, the third and to us best coat kind is the wavy in-between one. There could be issues with both shedding and tangling with this hair type, but these problems are much reduced. For this reason, this coat needs much less brushing — two to three times a week compared to daily with either of the above. They are still susceptible to some of the same canine health issues based on size and breed , but a lot less so. However, the first thing you need to do to ensure you have a dog that is in super good health is to purchase them from a reputable breeder. They will not only have tested the parent pups to ensure there are no heritable diseases , but they will also make sure the puppies themselves are in the very best of health before they go on to their forever homes. Standard-sized Sheepadoodles and Bernedoodles could both have problems with their joints due to their larger size. A healthy, well-balanced diet of high-quality kibble and plenty of exercise walking rather than running can help with this. As can a nicely cushioned bed. Sheepadoodles can suffer from ear infections , entropion eyelids rolling inwards , heart conditions, and skin problems. So these are all things to chat to your vet about. In terms of wellness, Doodles as clever, active dogs need plenty of stimulation. This includes at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day — walks, games, and the opportunity to play with toys. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle: Lifespan As Doodles are super healthy dogs, they often enjoy a much longer lifespan than other types. If well looked after, both Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles tend to do well throughout their lives, maintaining a good level of health and activity. Related Content Both Doodle types can live until years of age. However, the rule is that smaller dogs tend to outlive larger ones, so Toys, Minis, and Mediums will likely have a longer lifespan than Standards. However, start a little too late and you could encounter a few issues. The exact nature of these differs depending on the specific nature of the dog in question. That, coupled with all their natural strength, can make them a bit of a handful for novice owners. Issues with socialization only serve to make matters worse when it comes to these cautious dogs. Sheepadoodles are usually a little easier for newbies to control. They are incredibly obedient pups, making them pretty effortless to train at any time… just as long as you keep things interesting. These dogs really do have an endless appetite for play, so make training a game, and it will be a breeze. In the home, the bigger Bernedoodle does surprisingly better in a smaller space. They are also better behaved when meeting new people and animals as long as they have been thoroughly socialized, of course. For training tips and tricks, check out our article Obedience Training for Dogs: Mastering the Basics. The initial expense, however, is not the only one to consider. You also need to factor in food, grooming, and vet costs. It goes without saying that the larger the dog, the more food they will eat — so there is not much difference between Doodle types here. Things can get pricy with the woolen coat if you let it get all matted up. Plus, the groomer will likely have to shave your dog. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Family Friendliness Probably one of the key questions you will have about these dogs, especially if you have young children , is how family-friendly they each are. Well, most Doodles are extremely family-friendly — after all, the breeds were picked for Doodling for a reason. More often than not, they adore kids and enjoy playing with them for hours at a time. See Also: Click the image In a recent survey we conducted where Doodle owners were asked to rate different aspects of their pets, Bernedoodles were consistently rated excellent when it came to how they were around the family. That being said, you should always closely supervise children playing with any dog. Sheepadoodles are just as friendly, but their herding nature, coupled with their energy levels, may mean they are better suited to a house with older children and teenagers rather than younger kids. Sheepas are super affectionate dogs, but their working background could also make them more likely to nip. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Which is the Puppy for You? One is absolutely no better than the other. However, each type of Doodle has specifics that may make them more suited to you and your family. Opt for a Bernedoodle if you: Have limited space. Lead a more sedentary lifestyle. Have plenty of experience training large dogs. Are willing to pay a little more Have younger children in the house A Sheepadoodle might be more appropriate if you: Have plenty of space in your home, including a lovely big garden. Like going on family hikes, trips, and adventures with your dog. Are more of a newbie dog owner. Prefer to pay a little less for a puppy. Have older children or teenagers. Choosing the right kind of dog for your home can be a tough call — made all the tougher by the fact that all Doodles look like giant teddy bears no matter their parent breeds. However, it is a crucial decision and one that should only be undertaken after a fair bit of research. Hopefully, the overview of these two gorgeous dogs provided in this article can help you to understand them a bit more and see a little more clearly the one that will fit in with your lifestyle and your family the best. Short haired dogs and those that are lean, such as the whippet and greyhound would also benefit from a warm coat. A warm dog coat is also recommended if your dog lives in an area that regularly has low temperatures below zero or has a particularly wet climate during the winter. This applies to all breeds including Labradors and even those that are acclimatised to low temperatures. Unless your dog has a double coat, most dogs do not have much hair on their stomachs which is exposed to the cold. Senior dogs or dogs recovering from illness or injury may not be so mobile or able to run around easily to keep warm. A warming coat or jumper would be just the job for an older Labrador or other breed to keep their body temperature high and allow them to enjoy being outside. Double coated dog breeds such as Labradors are already well equipped to brave the elements of the winter weather, it is not recommended to put a coat or jumper on that kind of breed. How to Choose a dog coat — What to look for Dog coats are made in a variety of fabrics, but fleece and wool are the most popular and also the waterproof types which are great for wetter and snowy areas. Always buy a coat that is easy to care for so it is always dry and readily available for those wet muddy days. The coat should fit right down the back to the base of the tail, leaving the legs free to move easily. Coats in particular, can be difficult to find a good fit for your dog. This is especially so if they are very slim or more portly. Look for a coat that has a wrap-around strap which is more adjustable. Product sizes vary a lot, so it is best to measure your dog. Any good pet owner can feel anxious about how their dog may respond to extra-cold winter nights. As a puppy parent, you may even find yourself wondering if it would be worth the money to buy a coat for your Labrador puppy. Labrador puppies do not typically need a coat in the winter because they have a thick, double-coat that provides warmth in colder temperatures. However, protective items such as coats and booties should be considered if extended time in cold weather is expected. I'll also share with you some of my favorite items for cold-weather protection when necessary. Labradors do love the cold! Labradors were bred in historically cold climates , dating back to 16th century Newfoundland. Around the 19th century, traders shipped the breed to England, from which point they slowly made their way around the world to Canada. This breed made a name for itself by swimming through icy waters to assist fishers in pulling in nets filled with their prize. Labradors seemed made for the task, not only because of their webbed paws but also their waterproof, double-insulated coat. The soft, downy undercoat insulates Labradors against the harsh winter chill. Extended periods of cold exposure can put your dog at risk for illness. Puppies can shake for a variety of reasons, but will often do so as a sign of being cold. Your Labrador puppy could be shaking from spending too much time outside in the cold weather. Prolonged exposure to the cold can make your dog ill. If your Labrador puppy is still shaking after being brought indoors, then you may need to consult with a vet for further assistance. They should be fine for fifteen or twenty minutes-- long enough to use the bathroom or get in a quick playtime, but keeping your Labrador outside any longer may result in illnesses related to freezing temperatures. In addition to shaking and shivering, keep an eye out for : Whining. We may receive commissions from purchases made via our links. Being one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, Labradors live in various weather conditions around the globe. Many pet owners are concerned about how their Lab will handle winter. If you also want to know whether your Labrador needs to be safeguarded in winter, you've come to the right place. Labradors don't get cold in winter for the most part because they are bred to withstand cold weather and swim in freezing waters. However, over-exposure to icy environments can cause hypothermia or frostbite. Many Lab owners don't know how to help their pets stay warm and healthy during winter. So in this article, we'll discuss why Labradors can handle cold so well, whether they get a winter coat, and what you can do for your pet. So many to choose from on Amazon! Click here to see a list of them on Amazon. To understand how Labradors deal with cold, we need to look at their history. While the breed's name might suggest that they originated in Labrador, Canada, they first came about in Newfoundland in the 16th century. Labradors were initially known as the St. John's or the lesser Newfoundland dogs. They were imported to England in the early 19th century. Canada is known to be very cold. Fishers from Britain owned these dogs and trained them to help with fishing. They grew up swimming in icy water, being an active part of the fishing industry. Labradors would pull in nets filled with fishes, and they would also jump in freezing water to catch the fishes that had fallen off the hooks. Labs were perfect for this job because their double coat repelled cold water, and they were also excellent swimmers, thanks to their webbed paws. As you can see, this breed is naturally comfortable in cold climates. Labradors not only have a high tolerance for winter, but they actually enjoy frosty weather. Taking a walk or playing outside, even when it is cold, is what they do! Their origin also explains why they are eager to jump in and start swimming whenever they can. However, even though Labradors are fond of snow, they can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite if they are over-exposed to cold temperatures more on that later. Related article: What is the Ideal Temperature for a Labrador? Do Labradors Get a Winter Coat? Now that you know Labradors don't mind the cold at all, you might be wondering what makes them tolerate winter so well. The answer is that they have a cold-resistant, magical double coat. This double coat not only keeps them warm in winter but also keeps them cool in summer. We can say that Labradors are "well-insulated. It is typically rougher than the Undercoat. While the Topcoat is water-proof, it is the Undercoat that does the magic. It produces an oily residue that allows your Labrador's fur to repel water so that the skin stays dry even while swimming. This is why nobody recommends shaving your Labrador. Shaving takes away the crucial insulation from heat and cold. Their double-coat also explains why it is not recommended to bathe your Labrador regularly. Bathing will only remove the natural protective oils, leaving the coat dry and flaky. If you've ever owned a Labrador, chances are, at some point, you must've felt frustrated by all the shedding. Many Lab owners complain about how much they shed. Little do they know that this double coat is what makes Labradors do well in a cold environment. However, this double coat also makes you clean all the fur from your clothes and furniture. Although Labradors shed throughout the year, they have a biannual molt the first just before winter and the other in spring. As winter approaches and the temperature falls, Labradors shed their summer coat and grow a thicker, warmer coat for the winter. And during the spring molt, the winter coat is shed. A new one replaces it for the summer. Do Labradors Need Jackets in Winter? After the discussion we've had so far, some questions still remain: when is it too cold for Labradors? Should your Lab be wearing a jacket in winter? The usual consensus among dog experts is that Labradors don't need jackets or coats for winter. Anything below that and your Lab will eventually get cold. It's recommended to take your dog indoors if that happens. However, there are other factors to consider, as well. Labradors' cold tolerance is influenced by their general health, age, how accustomed the dog is to the outside, and their Undercoat density. If you're not cautious, your pet may become hypothermic. So it's better to look out for signs of discomfort in your dog and have a winter coat handy. It is available in 9 sizes and colors, allowing you to buy the perfect one for your pet. It is also lightweight, water-repellant, and windproof. This means your Labrador will stay warm without feeling anything. Even though your dog will probably handle the cold just fine if he's healthy, you should watch out for signs indicating that your pet may be getting uncomfortable in the cold. Once you have lived with your dog long enough, you'll be able to sense when there's something wrong with him whether he's angry, sad, sick, or cold. However, there are a few signs that you should look for to make sure your Labrador isn't cold: Shaking or shivering. Additional dog coat questions and tips At what temperature does a dog need a coat? Is it okay to put a coat on a dog? Dogs should not be wearing coats in mild weather, while indoors, or just for fun. If your dog is clearly opposed to wearing a coat for example, shows signs of anxiety or repeatedly tries to take it off , then modify their routine to minimize their exposure to cold weather. Which dog breeds need to wear coats and jackets? Shorter-haired dogs: Dogs with fine hair, especially if they have low body-fat, will get cold faster. Senior dogs: Older dogs have weaker immune systems and often suffer from arthritis or other age-related ailments; cold can exacerbate these problems. Short-legged dogs: Dogs like Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, and Corgis can lose heat quickly if their low stature puts them in contact with snow. What about in-between size dogs, like Jack Russells? Or the gigantic yet short-haired Great Dane? Or your mutt rescue? It really depends on the individual dog. Do dogs even get cold in the winter? Dogs get cold just like people do. But some dogs, like Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies, were bred for cold climates. Then again, if you have a Chinese Crested, they probably get cold when you open the fridge. No matter what their breed, dogs who are accustomed to warm weather may experience cold more strongly. Hypothermia causes muscles to stiffen and breathing and heart rate to slow. In serious cases, it can be fatal. A winter coat can help prevent hypothermia, but has no effect on frostbite, which afflicts extremities. Watch for chilly dogs Even if your dog is wearing a coat, stay with them while they are outside so that you can monitor them for shivering, whining, or anxiety. These behaviors could indicate that your dog is too cold; even with a coat on. If your dog is going to run around at the park, the coat will retain their extra body heat, making them even warmer. What are the features of a good coat? Waterproof fabrics are important, because a wet dog will get colder much faster than a dry one. Check that zippers are fully closed and not pinching, and velcro is securely fastened. A dog wearing a coat indoors can overheat quickly. We hope this article has helped you decide whether and what kind of coat to put on your dog. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have specific questions about keeping your dog warm this winter. Related articles. Do Labradors Get Cold in Winter? Yes, at low temperatures Labs can experience the effects of cold weather conditions, and face potential risks. But Labradors are a great cold weather dog breed with a double coat that keeps them cozy in cold air and water. Newfoundland, located in Canada, is a chilly place. Winter temperatures average around 32 degrees in December and rarely rise above 61 degrees in the middle of summer. For a dog to thrive here it needed to be tough, and settlers to the area took note. Dogs who had warm and water-resistant coats were beneficial since settlers of Newfoundland used Labs to help them ice-fishing. Labradors were first in line to retrieve nets and other fishing equipment from the water. I can only imagine the temperatures of the icy water in the North Atlantic. Centuries of this type of breeding resulted in the version of Labs we know today. Signature Double Coat As mentioned, Labs are known for their thick and water-resistant coats. Most Labrador Retriever owners will notice this trait by the significant shedding their dog exhibits. Labs have an outer coat, sometimes referred to as a guard coat, as well as a thick inner coat, referred to as an undercoat. Each of these coats serves a distinct purpose. Hence the name guard coat. The undercoat is usually much softer and denser and acts as insulation to a Labrador. It protects them against the chill of the air and ice-cold water, keeping their bodies warm even in the middle of winter. The undercoat also keeps Labs cooler during the summer. It acts as a temperature regulator, making sure your dog can be comfortable to work and play year round. The undercoat produces an oily substance that covers the coat of the Lab, making its fur water-resistant and keeps its skin dry. Knowing this, you may feel confident your Labrador can take on any cold temperatures your climate may throw its way. Every dog has their limits, and before you take your Lab outside on a frigid day, there are a few things you should consider. Temperatures that may not seem so cold at first glance will brisker depending on the wind. Labradors that may be very comfortable with the still air temperature are not immune from cold wind. It can cut through their layers of coat, and chill noses and paws. Younger adult dogs, in general, are more resilient and adjust better to changes in climate. If you are the owner of a senior Lab, pay special attention to air temperatures. You should look for cues from your dog that tell you it may be too cold for them to stay outside. It is also unwise to leave a Labrador puppy outside in the cold conditions. Their small size and inexperience make regulating their body temperature more difficult. This leaves them vulnerable and means that they should never be left out on cold days or nights. See Also:. A coat will help protect your dog from the cold weather and keep them comfortable while they are outside. If you are worried about your dog getting too cold, you can always put a sweater on them under their coat. A chihuahua, miniature pinscher, or similar companion dog may require extra protection if it is smaller than the average dog. Short-haired dogs, such as the whippet and greyhound, as well as lean dogs, such as the whippet, would benefit from a warm coat. If your dog lives in an area that experiences frequent below-zero temperatures, he or she should be protected with a warm coat. It is not recommended to coat or dress a dog with a double coat because they are already hardy enough for the winter. Double-coated breeds such as Labradors are already hardy enough for winter. Shorthaired dogs , such as a Labrador, a greyhound, or a beagle, are more susceptible to heat stress than other animals. Short-haired breeds, such as Greyhounds and Whippets, should be kept out of cold weather in addition to lean-bodied breeds. Seniors are more likely to develop arthritis or an weakened immune system, so they should be given a coat of winter protection. In addition to the loss of heat regulation as one ages, even thick-coated dogs may find themselves in the cold. Although your Labrador can usually tolerate temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit, not all dogs can. What do our dogs need during the winter months? In almost all cases, it is not a viable option. Fur keeps a dog warm during the winter, and it is usually sufficient to cover most of its body. Credit: top10canada. However, as a general rule of thumb, most labs need to be kept at a temperature of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit in order to maintain a comfortable working environment. On a hot day, 31 animals died as a result of being left in a hot car in , according to the American Society for the Prevention of Animals. Since , the United States has seen eight of the ten warmest years on record. For the sake of their health, it is critical to understand what temperatures are acceptable for dogs and which conditions can cause their body temperature to spike. Humidity can affect the natural process of digestion. When driving, it is best to turn on the air-conditioning while still inside the vehicle and open the windows on both sides. Dogs, like humans, cannot tell us how they are feeling in the heat, and they do not make any sense of it. It is critical to take steps in order to prevent your dog from reaching the point of irreversible heatstroke. If you shave your dog, the fur will be rough rather than soft, which could be the case in the case of hair regrowth. A lab coat is not only required for many professions, but it also serves as an essential safety device. Wear a lab coat to avoid spills and accidental contact when working in a lab. Many other professionals in a lab wear a lab coat as well. Scientists, electricians, chemists, and many others can be found in this category. A lab coat, in addition to being a fashion statement, is also intended to protect one from harm. Can Labradors Handle Cold Weather? Credit: www. When the weather turns cold, they enjoy playing in the snow, and they also enjoy the winter months. When the weather is below freezing, you should bring your dog in for the night or nights until it is warmer. Taking a blanket into the cold can help them stay warm and secure. If your Labrador is outside, it should have access to water that is not frozen. Because Labradors are prone to joint and bone problems, it is critical to keep them as healthy as possible. If you are going to let your dog play outside during the winter months, make sure he or she is kept safe. Dogs are sometimes allowed to go outside in places like Alaska and other states, and their fur protects them from the cold. For larger breeds, such as Labrador retrievers, an additional coat or sweater is not required for them to be able to enjoy the open spaces. Your Labrador will not require any boots to explore the open space when it is not wearing them. If your dog is injured or lives in a snowy environment where there is a lot of chemical melt-off, you may want to consider purchasing boots or socks for him. Because dogs lack sweat glands, their only way to dissipate heat during winter is panting. If your dog has difficulty breathing, is experiencing extreme shivering, or has seizures, you should take them to the veterinarian as soon as possible. If the infection is not treated, there is a risk of permanent damage to the paw. When you let your dog out for the winter, dress him in layers and provide him with plenty of water and shade. Make an appointment as soon as possible to bring them indoors if they begin to show symptoms of illness. Credit: backroadramblers. Husky, Labs, and Golden Retrievers are examples of dogs with thick coats that do not require winter clothing. Small breeds and short-haired dogs such as Chihuahuas, Doberman Pinschers, Pointers, and Greyhounds may get more easily colds. The double coat of fur on Labradors is a type of hunting coat. They are well adapted to cold temperatures , and they can withstand temperatures as low as 20F - 6. While their paws are well-equipped to protect them from the elements, they are not as well-equipped to protect themselves. Snow boots keep the paws from getting covered in snow and ice. Labradors are intelligent and loving dogs that are completely devoted to their owners. If you want your dog to enjoy running around and playing in these boots, you should make sure they are strong enough to allow him to reach for them without slipping. You can gently introduce your dog to snow boots by offering him a treat and gradually introducing him to them. Every Labrador is a unique individual with a distinct personality. Your dog may refuse to wear his snow boots at any time, so you may have to make the decision. If you choose a dog sled option, it will keep your dog safe during the winter. To train your dog to wear snow boots, keep him in a holding pattern and give him treats slowly. If the temperature outside is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, it is acceptable for dog owners of small breeds, puppies, senior dogs, or thin haired breeds to remove their sweaters or coats. As a result, it is advised to avoid setting a stone. If they are struggling or are lost, it is critical to return them to you as soon as possible. Should Labrador Wear Clothes? Some people choose to dress their Labrador in clothes to keep them warm during colder months , while others believe that Labradors do not need to wear clothes since they have a thick coat of fur. Ultimately, it is up to the owner to decide whether or not to dress their Labrador in clothes. Dog coats , sweaters, and boots are becoming more popular as an alternative to traditional dog clothing. The benefits of wearing clothes to your dog include: comfort, warmth, and relaxation. Dog coats are designed to make your dog feel as if he or she is receiving a gentle hug from you. If your dog is not dressed up, he or she may feel less special. To keep an eye on your dog at all times, it is best to keep a close eye on him and monitor his reaction to the weather changes. If they show signs of being cold, such as shivering or acting hesitant around going outside, wearing a coat may be a good idea for them. If your dog enjoys dressing up, you could spend some quality time together. If you go out for a walk with your pet, you can also try on different outfits at a pet-friendly restaurant or park. You should select outfits that are comfortable for your dog so that they do not feel stressed. Some people dress their dogs in warm clothing when it is really cold outside to make them more comfortable, but this is not necessary. Labrador Shedding Winter Coat When it comes to shed, the majority of it happens during the winter and in the spring. During the spring and winter, they shed the most. To keep warm in the winter, lab coats are shed to make way for a new layer of fur. They shed during the summer to help cool them down, but they are not as dense as they are in the winter. Labrador Coat The Labrador coat is a type of dog coat that is popular among Labradors and their owners. The coat is made from a waterproof and windproof material, making it ideal for dogs who live in wet or cold climates. They are water-resistant because they have a double layer, dense coating. The standard adult Labrador coat is less fluffy, denser, and more practical than a toy. Fur lengths, on the other hand, can vary greatly between Labradors. Despite the breed standard stating that Labradors have short, straight fur, they are able to have a longer, wavier coat. The fibroblast growth factor 5 gene, also known as the FGF5 gene, is responsible for this fur type. Fur with this gene is recessive in its recessive form. It is critical to provide two copies of the recessive gene to the Labrador puppies to increase their fur size. Dogs with long hair and fluffy coats are slightly different from standard Labradors. They will still be purebred Labs that will be able to blend in with other breeds. The most significant difference between these types of dogs is their grooming requirements. Fur with longer hairs tends to tangle and knots, so regular grooming is required. Post navigation.
I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. Ary is always available to help answer questions of give advise and loves to keep up with his pups as they grow and beyond. In researching, we found Ary and the Olde English breed and could not be happier with the decision to get Bruce. Ary was incredible throughout the process, explaining everything we needed to know about the breed and the process of importing him into Hong Kong. He checked in with us several times before the flight and was in constant contact via text when we went to the airport to pick up Bruce, who arrived a little skeptical of his new surroundings but perfectly healthy and happy. The extent to which Ary cares about every one of the amazing dogs he sells is clear through his attention to detail and willingness to put in any extra effort to make sure his puppies get to, and stay in, good homes. He took to his kennel training and potty training so fast! In searching for our puppy, we did our due diligence researching online and then visiting your property in person. Stick to softer surfaces, like grass and dirt paths, while your pup is young and their bones are not fully fused. Most GSD owners simply want to take train their puppy to walk on a leash in the neighborhood and park without getting pulled down the street. There are three basic ways to communicate how you want your German Shepherd puppy to walk on a leash with you: the stopping method, the turning method, and the luring method. The Stopping Method Open the door, but only open the door if your dog is sitting. This step could take some time and practice. Once you both are out the door, have your dog sit again. You need to lock the door and your dog needs to sit for this. During your walk, have your dog sit for you at various times. When he does offer a tasty, high value, quick-to-eat treat. Now immediately start walking again and give the release cue. Stand still and wait until he sits. This could take a while. This is important, especially because one day your little pup will be large enough to injure you if they pull you along on the walk wildly! This will take lots of time and patience. But setting a strong and obedient walk foundation allows you to enjoy your walks more and maintain control over your large breed dog as they mature and grow stronger. The Turning Method Use the same steps as above to get outside your house and begin your walk, except instead of stopping and waiting on your dog, turn in the opposite direction and begin walking the other way. Quietly turn around and guide them along when they get a few steps ahead of you. You may also tire of turning. But stick with it. Either of these techniques takes plenty of patience and a strong mental character. But your dog loves to learn. Their mind is like a sponge at this young age, but they also lack obedience skills and an attention span. Use treats and toys to get your dog to follow you. The Treat Luring Method: Hold the treat at their eye level in front of them so they can see and smell the treat. Take one or two steps forward, having them follow the treat with their nose and eyes. They will probably keep following the treat. She loves them! Take a couple of steps forward while squeaking the toy. As they follow, keep stepping forward and squeaking the toy. After a few successful steps forward, let them play with the toy as their reward. Keep up this game to motivate them to follow you. Eventually, your dog gains confidence in their new surroundings and with your help and will walk on their own. Never allow your dog to run loose near traffic. Never unleash your dog in a new area. Never allow your dog to eat objects found on the ground. They could be poisonous! Never think a person running or someone on a bicycle sees your little pup. Puppies are quick moving and can dart in front of a moving person causing them to trip and fall. This can also injure your dog as they may fall on top of them or kick or step on them. Pup is distracted Remember that being outside with your dog is equivalent to you going to Disney Land! Give them a chance to develop their attention skills, or use the high value treats to make them pay attention to you. If you are limited in the places you can go, choose different routes so your dog gets to experience new smells and sights. The dog looks stressed or afraid Find quieter areas to walk in or use the lure and reward method to help them overcome their walking fears. Carry them home and end your walk. Next time, go a shorter distance and take less time. Use positive training and rewards to communicate. The best walking setup for a puppy is a no-pull harness that connects at two different points in the front and back. No-pull harnesses are great for introducing your puppy to structured walks while keeping them safe and happy. Need More Manners Training? Your GSD needs to learn more than just walking nicely. He also needs to learn all the basics of obedience. Use this free training guide to get started today! This activity is usually one of the longest and hardest to teach since you are competing with the sights and smells of the great outdoors! Stay patient, positive, and stick to your training. Your doggie will love you for it! She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. Whether you have a puppy or an older GSD you are most likely going to have to train your German Shepherd not to pull on leash. Leash pulling with German Shepherds is often a result of their curious nature compounded with their high energy. This is especially true in new environments where they tend to get over-stimulated wanting to sniff and survey everything around them. I know from experience that the more excited your dog is to walk the more pulling is going to occur. When Allie was a puppy the beginning of walks were like a pulling festival. However, once we got toward the middle of the walk and she was less excited she walked next to me naturally without any hassle. Their size makes a difference because this task gets more and more difficult the heavier they get. The most ideal time to engage in leash training is after exercise or active play. This is when your GSD has already expended excess energy and is going to better listen and focus. As per my example in the beginning of the article, if I had tried to leash train puppy Allie before her walk when she was all excited and worked up, both she and I would have gotten frustrated. But after her walk she was much calmer because her energy had been expended so it was easier to get the desired behavior from her. Home is a familiar environment that is less likely to get your GSD as excited as another new location. The key is that you want to minimize new things that will distract and over-stimulate your German Shepherd during training. A flat collar would be most comfortable for your German Shepherd. I prefer a belt-type flat collar because a clip-type collar might break under substantial tension. However, there are many other types of collars to consider depending on your needs. For your leash, select a sturdy one that feels comfortable in your hand and is comfortable to grip tightly. The ideal length of an everyday walking leash is 4 to 6 feet for most people. Get them over that excitement before starting your training sessions. Allie walks on my left side. The side closest to your dog will be your treat hand and the other would be your leash hand. Capture their interest by getting them to sniff the treat and then slowly walk a few steps to see if they will follow. If they do, give them the treat and praise them for doing a good job! Do this a few times and let them realize that yummy treats come when they walk with you. Another tip is whenever your dog starts to pull, change directions. For example, if you are walking to the left and your dog starts to pull turn and walk to the right. This tactic shifts their attention and refocuses your GSD on walking with you. Gradually increase the steps after the heel command as you dog gets the idea. Once your dog can heel for steps, increase it to steps, and so on. You can test this by holding a treat in your leash hand and then no treat in what used to be your treat hand. If the pup walks nicely beside you, treat them using your leash hand. Continue practicing this and gradually build up distance. Whenever your GSD attempts to pull, stop walking completely, and repeat the command. Set longer and longer distances and praise them for each milestone. Final Thoughts Teaching your German Shepherd to walk nicely on a leash is by no means a quick and easy task. Just be patient and enjoy the process. Once you perfect the walking behavior, you can safely and enjoyably engage in many other activities with your dog. Here are a couple of good videos that demonstrate how to train your dog not to pull on a leash:. When choosing equipment for your German Shepherd puppy, it is best to start simple. Fit your pup for a nylon or leather collar that you can adjust as she grows. The exception is a harness with a strap across the front of the chest. Another option is a head collar that fits a dog similar to a horse halter. Head halters are best left to professional trainers as dogs may have difficulty adjusting , and improper use can cause great discomfort for your pet. Approach your dog to connect a leash rather than call her to you. Be prepared with plenty of treats or favorite toys because leash training requires constant reinforcement. Some trainers do not believe in food treats, but you need some kind of powerful incentive. According to most sources, including a blog by Petmeds. Adjust the collar if possible, so it does not feel tight across your fingertips. Similar to the collar, the leash should also be simple. Unless your puppy chews excessively on his leash, you can use one of leather, nylon, rope, or plastic. For heavy chewers who you cannot deter, you can use a chain lead. Keep in mind a lightweight material will be less distracting for a small puppy. The most effective length for your first leash is about six feet. You will eventually need a short lead also of about three feet. Begin leash training in a controlled environment You can start leash training your Shepherd as soon as she arrives home at eight to twelve weeks. Most of your initial work should focus on making your pup comfortable with a collar or harness and leash. Indoors There are a few reasons you should initiate leash training indoors. Your house is a safe area with well-established, clear boundaries As a training venue, your home will have the fewest distractions. Allow your pup to drag the leash When you initiate leash training, your primary goal for young puppies should be to help them get used to have something attached to their collars. Once you snap on the leash, allow your pup to walk around or even play. You can allow your pup leash time for 10 to 15 minutes at a time two or three times a day. Your pup can have some of his leash sessions in an enclosed yard as well. We recommend you only attach the leash for no more than 10 minutes at a time in the beginning and never leave your pup unsupervised. Your pup could destroy the leash by chewing, or worse, entangle himself in it or wrap it around furniture or some other object. Finally, leash work is mentally challenging for pups. Take advantage of skills your puppy learns in fun activities like fetch or remedial bite work and use them in your leash training. The first few lessons, especially, are exercises in persistence, each session marked by gradual improvement. Eventually, your pup should accept the leash as an extension of her collar. Walk your German Shepherd pup around the house Your puppy can learn a lot about walking on a leash in the safety of your home. After you have allowed your puppy to drag the leash for a few days, she may throw a tantrum when you pick up the end and try to lead her. If your puppy resists the restriction picking up her leash causes, simply remain still until she stops fighting. Reward her immediately when she relaxes. You may need to repeat the process numerous times as she may balk at any tension you put on the leash. Avoid jerking on the leash, pulling against your dog, or applying constant and unyielding tension. Pulling on your dog will only make her jerk against you with greater force. You may have found out the hard way that you rarely win a pulling contest against your dog even if you can drag her several feet across the floor. When your pup seems ready, walk him for short periods around the house just as you would outside. At first, do not worry about obedience to the leash. Reward your pup any time he allows the leash to go slack or whenever he looks toward you for direction. Also, reward him for walking at your side. Give your dog direction and purpose by tossing treats in various locations throughout the home, allowing your puppy to sniff them out and eat them on your walk. Random treats will keep your puppy in a good frame of mind, relaxed about the leash, and interested in the task at hand. It is time to go out in the yard With consistent and positive leash work, your puppy will be ready to expand her range beyond your home in a relatively short time. Your next stepping stone for leash training should be an enclosed outdoor area. Despite the fact you are working in a fenced-in space, you should teach your puppy that every training session is like a normal walk. Once your puppy is as comfortable with the leash outdoors as he was in the house, start incorporating more obedience and additional structure into your exercises. Your yard or other designated areas will provide security for your puppy, but there will be more distractions than there were inside. Again, persistence and positive reinforcement will keep your puppy on track to becoming a pleasant walking companion. There are a few times when it is beneficial to walk your dog on your fenced-in property as opposed to in public. Young puppies — Puppies have an underdeveloped immune system, leaving them susceptible to viruses prevalent in the environment like Parvo. They do not typically complete their vaccination series until the age of 12 to 16 weeks, and initial boosters do not completely protect them. You should isolate a very young puppy from potential exposure to viruses. Uneducated dog — You do not want to walk a dog without leash knowledge outside of an enclosure. German Shepherds who do not walk well on a leash can injure your arm by pulling or yanking, get away from you, or injure themselves. Social skills on a leash make your pet safer. Aggression — Leash training in an enclosed area will help you avoid confrontations with people and other dogs if your pet is aggressive. While muzzling your dog in public is an option, it does not prevent any underlying aggression and associated stress. What are a few proven methods for leash training German Shepherd puppy? What are the basic leash skills? Your German Shepherd puppy should learn a few basic skills before you attempt to leash walk her in public. When you initially go outside your yard, choose familiar routes, If you know the path you are taking, it increases the security for your dog. As your puppy continues to master leash walking, you can eventually start venturing on new routes, increasing the novelty. It is also about this time that we recommend moving to a short, stiff leash to begin training heel. A short lead keeps your puppy near you, and a lack of flexibility in the material gives you better control. No lunging at people or other animals. Walk by your side — Teach your puppy not to switch from side to side as this is a serious problem that can cause you to trip and fall. Calm and confident demeanor without pulling your arm — A large, powerful dog like a German Shepherd who pulls relentlessly can cause serious injury to your shoulder and make you lose your balance. How do you eliminate your dog pulling on his leash? When you begin leash training in earnest, you should get a leash that is short but does not pull your puppy too tightly. Your puppy should always work from the left traditional or right side for consistency. One of the most effective ways to train your dog not to pull on her leash is to abruptly stop walking when she tugs on you. You do not need to pull or yank your dog towards you. Your pup will soon notice that you have stopped moving and she cannot go anywhere. When your GSD puppy notices you have stopped and looks in your direction, reward her with a treat. Resuming the walk is also a reward. Halting every time your puppy pulls on you at the end of her leash requires consistency and patience. Many puppies get into the bad habit of switching sides during a walk, often crossing right in front of you. You can address random changes in direction by making an about-face and reversing your path. Every time your puppy heads in a direction counter to your chosen line of travel, abruptly head opposite to where she wants to go. Your ultimate goal is to reward your dog when she allows the lead to go slack and make her work harder when she applies tension by going against you. Another method of training your puppy to walk politely by your side during walks is to use a type of carrot and stick maneuver. Hold a treat just in front of your dog while walking, and if she can maintain her position by your side for 10 feet, she gets the reward. You may have to shorten the distance in the beginning. What about advanced leash training? Although not suitable activities for puppies in their advanced stages, you can begin herding and agility training of your German Shepherd puppy with the aid of a long leash. We mainly aim to illustrate how effective leash training of a Shepherd as a puppy is the backbone to more advanced skills. Long Line Long-lining can be a nice addition to your leash training. The following two videos are examples of effective GSD leash training This video illustrates the use of a short leash and why German Shepherds make efficient police dogs. The most notable features are frequent praise, consistency, and persistence. Also, notice the trainer is using play as an incentive. In this case, the leash is only a backup because the puppy is so well-trained and engaged.

I went to meet Mike to talk about an upcoming litter and Bailey was sitting by herself. I pretty much changed my mind and wanted her immediately. She was introduced to a 6 year old cocker spaniel with and IVDD condition and they became best friends. Great Temperament, Incredibly smart and absolutely beautiful addition to my family. Mike has been following up since I got her checking to see if I had any issues. His training packet was detailed and if you follow the crate training and feeding regiment you will have no problems. Angelica I brought home an F2 labradoodle from here. My pups has already learned several commands within a few weeks of having him. The breeder has plenty of space for the pups and you can tell that there is a lot of care put into the environment. My dog has a great temperament and deals with people well. Upon the first meeting my pups was excited to greet people you can tell he had been socialized well. Mike does well with communication and answers any questions. Highly recommended! Javier Sanchez Got my black lab from Mike trained. He is very good and is comfortable with a crate, walking and great temperament. Overall an awesome dog from a great breeder! Maura Eaton My 12 year old son did all the research on Mike and his company. He had 5 star reviews across the board. Once we saw the picture of Zoey, a Chocolate Labradoodle, we knew we had to meet her. Mike's business is clean, the dogs are all loved by him and well trained. Zoey was Stage 1 trained. This is my first dog as an adult and Mike was excellent in providing advice and recommendations. After we adopted Zoey, Mike would periodically check-in on how Zoey was adjusting to her new family and home. As you can see in the pictures, she is very happy. Mike knew her personality well - smart, sweet and social. A perfect fit and addition to our family. He worked on training with the puppy before we brought him home, which was a big help in the adjustment! I would recommend Mike to anyone looking for a labradoodle puppy. Our puppy has been the best addition to our family and we have enjoyed working with Mike. John Schmadeke We were looking for a labradoodle puppy from a reputable and experienced breeder. Mike was super helpful, and we really appreciated that he cared so much about things like genetics and DNA testing for the dogs. Mike has always been available to answer our questions and to give advice. Tom Riniker We found Mike to be very professional, knowledgeable, and helpful when we purchased a puppy from him. His kennels are clean and organized, and his puppies are well cared for. He really loves his career and it shows! He has followed up with us on numerous occasions regarding the health and well-being of our puppy, and I always know I can reach him if I have questions. Thanks for everything, Mike! Yunhua Chen I have bought a stage 2 F1 labradoodle from Mike. His name is Zen, and just like his name, he is a well-behaved and well-trained little man. He only cried about 15 - 30 minutes during the first few nights and later he was sound asleep. I highly recommend Mike as a breeder because not only he deeply cares about the dogs, but also he has the expertise to make the dog the perfect match for you. Michelle Balchunas Mike was absolutely wonderful to deal with and very helpful with adding a new puppy to our family. If you are looking for a lab to add to your family we would highly recommend working with Mike. Charles Arnold Mike was a great help with our new puppy, Archie. Great experience… and a great dog. Junie is gentle, kind and very loving. She's also extremely athletic and smart. Working with Mike was a very smooth process and his "dog siting" service has proved helpful as I do travel on occasion. Having someone I could trust to care for Junie is super helpful. Mike James I recently had the fortunate privilege of working with Mike to find my next pup. For multiple reasons, the breed is perfect for me - the temperament, lifestyle often on the water , and hypoallergenic fits a tough lifestyle. I without hesitation recommend you work with Mike if you are looking for an amazing pup and great support network. Charlie is so gentle. He was just outside getting petted by his fan club, the neighbors. He licks. I got him the week of July 4th he was outside during that noise. He looks at noise. One of his other puppies was the same way, gentle. Day one he knew the trail through the woods back to our house. Charlie is a beautiful Chocolate lab with the softest hair. I got him at 16 weeks. You have no idea how helpful that is. Of course you want a healthy dog. Took the shots like a champ. The Vet remarked how firm his joints were. Yes he lets you brush his teeth! He goes to the door when he has to go. Another reason I wanted a 16 week pup. Peanut butter to continue gentle licks on my fingers. He always gets small chicken or liver for COME. You should see him come. Is Charlie gentle because some hunting dogs have a gentle mouth or is he gentle because Mike treated him right? Oh do exactly as Mike says on the take home instructions, he knows his dogs! Highly recommend! We brought our pup home with all the documentation of his superior genetics. Mike also sends several handouts which help prepare you for puppy ownership and ensure a smooth transition for your pup to his new home! In addition to his exceptional breeding he is exceptionally well-trained. We opted for a stage 2 puppy and not only does he sit, lay down, stay, he has an incredibly calm demeanor and his additional exposure to other dogs was also incredible. He is so well-tempered and well-behaved due to his additional training. We are so happy and in love with our sweet boy! Brent Viditz-Ward We were looking for a chocolate lab puppy for a long time from a reputable breeder and our experience with Mike was wonderful. He took time to get to know us and make sure that the dog was going to a good home and is always available to answer questions, give advice, etc. I highly recommend Mike and his puppies! M Fowkes Mike is a fantastic breeder. We got an F1 puppy from Mike. She is a sweet beautiful girl. Before she was born Mike knew what the puppies would look like generally, and was really easy to communicate with. He is very responsive when I had a lot of questions. He is like that even now that my puppy is 4 months old…available to answer questions and be supportive. Josie Palma-Aurelio We stumbled on this website when we were looking for our next fur baby. All the reviews speak truthful about Mike. He calls us to check on Nala for updates and gives us pointers on how to take care of her. Nala is such a lovable puppy and we are so happy to have her. We highly recommend! Juan Tellez Mike was a great helping my family and puppy get adjusted to our home. You can tell Mike has a lot of dedication and love towards his dogs. Snoop has been a great addition to our family! We are first time pet owners and Mike handheld us through the entire adoption process. His reference material, responsiveness and his genuine care for the puppies has helped us navigate the critical period of 12 weeks smoothly. The puppy is super smart outwitted me in a game of hide n seek when he was 10 weeks old! He is a bundle of joy! We are first time pet owners and had a lot of questions! He is always enthusiastic in answering any questions we have and supporting us before and after getting the pup! He cares about his dogs and pups and it shows in the research he has done and the knowledge he has about them! He has a lot of information on his website about the breed, food, toys and snacks! He also gives a couple of handouts when we book a pup with him and some when we take them home! Those helped a lot in the preparation for our pup! When you take them home, he also gives you details about the breed, vaccination records, and DNA testing done for the litter! Our girl, Shuri, is very energetic and curious! She does really well when we train her and has already learnt so much! For anyone looking for a labradoodle, Mike is the best! Jocelyn I highly recommend Mike. We are first time dog owners and he made the process so easy for us. Our labradoodle has made an excellent addition to our family!

The good news: this makes it easier not to mention cheaper than ever before to get your hands on a puppy. The bad news: there are plenty of scammers looking to take advantage of your lack of experience. The two main types of scam in the world of dog breeding are false advertisements and puppy mills. The first will advertise Goldendoodle pups usually with cute photographs. The second have puppies but prioritize profit over the health of their animals. Puppy mills overbreed their dogs and raise the pups in appalling conditions. So, who knows what condition your pup will be in when you receive them. However, organizations have sprung up that are committed to promoting the responsible breeding of these popular pets. To be registered with these guys, a facility has to jump through all kinds of testing and health hoops specific to Goldendoodles. If a breeder carries this certification, you can be sure they have healthy dogs. A reputable facility will be very upfront about all that they do and why. They will usually offer to show you the test results so you can see for yourselves or run them by an expert of your own choosing. For some idea of potential Goldendoodle problems, check out our article on Doodle Health Issues and Diseases. Look For a Health Guarantee A health guarantee is usually built right into the purchase agreement when you are buying a puppy. It generally says something along the lines of if you find something wrong with the puppy as a result of their breeding or early care, you can return them and receive a refund. This guarantee tells you that the breeder has faith in the quality of their dogs. You can feel more confident buying from them. A puppy mill would not make this offer. Brush your red Labradoodle a few times a week to reduce the chances of skin or coat issues. Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections, so cleaning their ears often is important. Brush their teeth daily using a dog safe toothbrush and toothpaste. Finding a Red Labradoodle Puppy Red is still not the most popular Labradoodle color, but it is on the rise. And, they get along well with children and other pets, as long as they are properly socialized. Do you have a red Labradoodle at home? Or are you hoping to welcome one into your family soon? References and Resources. Apricot vs Red Labradoodle The main difference between an Apricot Labradoodle and a Red Labradoodle is the intensity of the red color of their coat. Apricot Labradoodles often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color. Wavy and curly coats are the most common while straight coats are usually seen in reverse Labradoodle generations where the Labradoodle has been bred back to a Labrador Retriever instead of a Poodle. Their coats feature light, loose waves and give Labradoodles a teddy bear appearance. You usually find Red Labradoodles with wavy coats in first generation litters. Red Labradoodle Curly Coat Curly coats are the next most common coat type. They are much denser and thicker than wavy coats and more closely resemble the coat of a Poodle. Red Labradoodles with curly coats are usually seen in back-cross generations where the Labradoodle has been bred back to a Poodle e. F1b, F1bb and F2b Labradoodles. Curly coats are usually more hypoallergenic than other coat types. They are usually not as hypoallergenic as wavy or curly coat Labradoodles as they usually are from a generation that has a higher percentage of Labrador Retriever genes than Poodle genes. Hardly any straight hair Labradoodles have red hair but it is possible.

So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments.
