Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs. Bringing her home actually reminded me of bringing home a baby. Super sleepy and well behaved for a minute, then they turn into the needy baby. That meant teaching her to sleep in her kennel at night, and go in her kennel when we are gone. I was convinced we would be up all night from the start, but she slept through the night well from day one! When we first began, we opted to keep her crate farther away from the bedrooms so everyone would sleep well. She let us know when she was awake and did bark when she was first put to bed. We also opted to keep a sound machine in the room for white noise. This helped her not hear us in the even we had to get up with any kids. Picking The Right Crate Penny uses this crate, and has since being a puppy. As a new puppy we were able to put the divider in to make it feel smaller and more cozy. Now, she sleeps in it without the divider. When she was small we put towels down for her to sleep on so they were easy to clean. She treats towels like a baby blanket and drags it out to lay on, so we ended up giving her a blanket at about 7 months old. Buy the dog crate we love for Penny here! Potty Training Bernedoodle Puppies Because puppies typically do a great job at not having accidents in their crate, that is a good step in getting them house broken. Then after another week or so, she became completely house broken. We were VERY careful not to allow her to be in any room unattended. When puppies are unattended, you can expect accidents. Following her cues was very helpful in establishing a schedule. Just like potty training a toddler, puppies too give off body signals to alert you that they need to go. Once we realized those cues and timing, potty training was set. Lastly, in the event of an accident, Penny is placed in her kennel instead of taking her outside once we knew she knew it was wrong. We attempted a 2 week, all day, training session. No Dogs On The Furniture? However, I lost that fight, fast. She loves to be on furniture and sometimes even tries to be on my lap. A Teething Bernedoodle Puppy A teething puppy can be rough. Puppies tend to nip and chew on anything they can sink their teeth into- even if that means a finger or two. The kids quickly learned not to play near her mouth. We keep these bully sticks on hand. Honestly, it is an investment because she goes through them really fast. It has been the best thing for keeping her from chewing on anything in our home or from nipping, which will lessen with time. How To Curb Jumping? Jumping has been our hardest behavior to curb for Penny. She is a big dog and is very strong. Jumping has been our biggest hurdle to work through and it is a continual work in progress. I think for most bigger dogs, this is a difficult behavior to address. Bernedoodles are especially prone to jumping due to their affectionate nature. They want to jump for love just to be in your space. These photos were at roughly 6 months old and in dire need of a grooming Barking Problems I am often asked if Penny barks a lot. From time to time, she will bark in her kennel for 10 seconds to remind us she wants out, but by no means is barking in excess. Bernedoodle Grooming Bernedoodles are considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog that does not shed. That said, they do shed SOME just like you do as a human. Penny by no means sheds on our clothes or our furniture. We from time to time do find a little fluff of hair against the baseboards, but for the most part have noticed no major shedding. Our oldest son is also allergic to dogs, and has done very well with Penny. Shedding dogs give him hives and Penny has not done that for Jack. Even with minimal shedding, Bernedoodles do have to be groomed. We take Penny to be groomed where we have them do the whole nine yards, including cutting her hair. Between the grooming sessions we also do a few things to take care of her at home. However, she still requires regular grooming appointments and brushing at home. The more often you brush your Bernedoodle, the more used to it they will get so they handle it better. Toy for cleaning teeth — We try to brush Pennys teeth, but also have opted to use this toy with toothpaste. Greenies Bones — We also give Penny Greenies bones every few days which helps keep her breath fresh and her teeth clean. Shampoo — Although we get Penny groomed it is great to bathe your Bernedoodle at home from time to time. Paw Cleaner — This has been one of my favorite purchases with Penny. You fill it with water and clean their paws when they come in when it is muddy. We keep it by the back door for stormy days and it has been so helpful! Bernedoodle Play and Socialization So how much attention does a Bernedoodle really need? Puppies will always need socialization and attention. Penny, however, is easy to please. Throwing a ball for her outside is a great way to entertain her. As with most big dog breeds one of the best ways to handle energy levels is to take them on a daily walk. Long walks take time for them to be ready for in terms of obedience, but overall we have found that slowly walking more has been the best way for her. She is much more well behaved when slightly worn out. Of course, if you need assistance in getting energy out, a puppy daycare is a great option for socialization and to fill those exercise needs. Penny loves other dogs and enjoys playing. We have 4 little ones at home and their safety is our biggest concern. That said we also have taught them to respect Penny in return. We allow Penny to eat on her own and although sometimes the kids do interrupt, we try to encourage them to leave her be. She is incredibly loving with the kids. No matter what coat the Labradoodle has it will require daily brushing to prevent matting and removal of burrs. Wool coat Labradoodles inherit the poodles curly coat and require grooming quite often as their hair will not fall out. Whereas the fleece coat is a cross between the Labradoodle and Poodle coats, it grows straight, wavy or loosely curled and does not require as much maintenance. Labradoodles require regular exercise and Standard Labradoodles would not suit apartment living or small yards, they require a moderate to large yard. Miniature Labradoodles can be kept in apartments or in a house with a small sized yard but require daily exercise. All sizes of Labradoodles need some form of high intensity daily activity to prevent increased weight gain. It is also important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet for your pup to prevent obesity. Labradoodles are extremely intelligent dogs which is why they are used so often as guide, hearing and other support type dogs. Labradoodles will thrive on regular training and puppy preschool is a must! At puppy preschool pups are taught obedience and socialisation but the owner will also learn a lot about the breed, training strategies and toxic foods. There will be no body odor or shedding in the Fleece and Wool coat Early generation dogs with a hair coat will have both odor and shed in varying degrees. It is acceptable to see a coat change from the puppy to adult coat, and also during hormonal changes in fertile bitches. This coat will not shed, and needs to be groomed out. COAT Coat length should be inches long. It should be straight, wavy or forming spirals and should naturally grow in staples with a soft texture. It should not be too thick or dense nor should it be fluffy or fuzzy. It should be a single coat. Appearing to contain a silky lanolin in texture. Appearance can range from an almost straight to a flowing wavy type coat with lots of body. Appearing to contain a sheep lanolin in texture. The ideal wool coat should hang in loose hollow spirals. It is acceptable to exhibit a spring appearance rather than spiral. Coat Colors of The Australian Labradoodle These days you can find the Australian Labradoodle in a number of different and beautiful colors. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the topcoat, referred to as sunning, this is quite expected and acceptable. The Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors. BLACK This color should be a solid black in color with no sprinkling of any other color through the coat. Nose pigment to be Black. BLUE This color should be a dark to medium smoky blue in color. The blue coat color will develop over time yrs but as a developed adult should have an even coat color. Nose pigment to be Rose in color [matching the coat color]. Nose pigment to be Rose in color. Eye color is many times light in shades of hazel or green. CHALK This color should be a white color but when compared to white is rather a chalky white in color. Nose pigment to be Black or Rose. True chocolates are born almost black in color and maintain the rich dark color throughout their lifetime. Color should be even. When compared to white this color will have a yellow tint or vanilla tone. A true Gold should not have a lighter root than the outer coat and preferable have an even coloration over the entire body. This color may fade as the dog grows older. Nose pigment to be Black in color. Lavender dogs are born chocolate and will develop over time yrs. Parchment dogs are born milk chocolate and will develop over time yrs. From a distance adult dogs can be mistaken for a dark or smoky cream. In the early stages of the breed it was considered a rare color group, however it is is now quite common. The parti gene was introduced through the poodle lines or the Cocker Spaniel lines in the history of the breed. Or a dog that is born dark with golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. Rare color group RED This color should be a solid even rich red in color. A true red should not be lighter at the root than the outer coat. Reds can fade as the dog grows older. Rare color group SILVER This color can range in shades from very light pewter in color to a dark charcoal in color it is preferred to see an even color through the coat but acceptable to see uneven layering of color in the coat. Silvers are born Black with the coat color developing over time yrs. Payments Labrdadoodles require trimming about four times a year. This coat usually requires trimming two to three times a year. All allergy and asthma friendly labradoodles have a coat change from puppy to adult usually between months of age. During their coat change it is recommended that you groom them daily. The coat change can last anywhere from a week to several weeks. This is usually the time when owners decide that their beautiful furry doodle needs a shorter look. Not all Labradoodles are Allergy and Asthma friendly. They have had an extremely high success rate so far! We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. We recommend that any family or person who suffers from dog related allergies or asthma should look into a Wool coated Labradoodle as they have the highest success rate. Not all breeders are experienced in selecting coat types so make sure that you find a breeder who not only knows the look but also the correct texture of the coat type you are looking for. Because the breed is still in the development stages we are still are seeing some variations within the three coat types themselves. Also your fleece coats while over all are softer than your wool coats in texture they still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. The Australian Labradoodle requires varying degrees of grooming depending on their coat type. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. This coat usually requires trimming one-two times a year. The Micro Fine Fleece Supper soft and fine texture in wavy or spiraling coat is an allergy and asthma friendly coat, if kept well groomed. This coat also requires trimming about three-four times a year. The Cotton Wool Super dense curly-straight coat with a softer texture than the original wool or loose wool coats This coat is reminiscent of a giant cotton ball when groomed out and is so dense that it almost keeps it self standing straight up.
