The boxador dog is a crossbreed developed by mixing a purebred boxer and a purebred Labrador retriever. Although both parent breeds are officially recognized by the AKC, the boxer Lab mix has the status of a designer breed. Boxadors have several different names and are also known as laboxers, boxerlabs, and boxerdors. While some boxerlabs take more after one parent than the other, others are a perfect blend of both parent breeds. Generally speaking, most inherit a boxer-like frame but are sizably built like their Labrador retriever parents. Although their appearance is unpredictable, there are a few traits you can expect to see when it comes to size, coat, and color. Size Being a cross between a Labrador retriever and a boxer, boxerlabs tend to be medium to large size dogs. Most are between 23 and 25 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds when fully grown. And males tend to be larger than females. Color The Labrador retriever comes in three colors — yellow, chocolate , and black. On the other hand, the boxer also comes in three different colors — white, fawn, and brindle. Keeping this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Lab boxer mix can come in many different coat colors. The most commonly seen colors in this mix are brown, black, brindle, and white. Coat While a Lab has a short, double water-resistant coat, the boxer is a short-haired breed with a smooth and silky single coat. Most laboxers inherit the short, silky, and smooth coat of their boxer parents; however, some can have a denser coat of a Labrador. Since your boxerlab will inherit character traits from both its parent breeds, you should meet both the Lab and the boxer parents. Since both boxers and Labrador retrievers are friendly, playful, loving, and devoted companions, chances are that their mix will be too. Although boxer Labs can act as either of their parent breeds, they are generally extremely playful and energetic. Depending on how much your mix takes after its boxer parent, they might act goofy and cheerful most of the time. Boxerlabs form strong bonds with their people and do best in large families that have the time and energy to interact and play with them several times during the day. People-oriented and loving, this mix craves companionship and tends to develop separation anxiety when left alone a lot. If they are forced to stay home alone while you are at work, boxerlabs can easily become bored and destructive. Activity Level As an offspring of two very energetic working breeds, the laboxer is a very active dog with high exercise needs. Being such an active and athletic dog, your mix will need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day in addition to two walks. Activities such as running, hiking, swimming, or agility are all great ways to keep your pooch exercised and in excellent shape. Since boxerlabs love to play, games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, hide and seek, and tug-of-war are ideal ways to interact with your pooch and keep them entertained and exercised at the same time. Having a securely fenced backyard can be a big bonus when owning this mix. This way, you can keep your laboxer exercised and in great shape without leaving the comforts of your home. This mix craves companionship and is happiest when involved in all family activities. But, besides love and affection, you should also pay attention to: Exercise As mentioned previously, the lab boxer mix needs at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day. In addition to two regular daily walks, you should take your dog for a run, hike, or swim to burn excess energy and stay in good shape. Fun-loving, playful, and goofy, this mix loves games and will enjoy having a variety of interactive dog toys that will stimulate their curious mind. Games such as fetch or hide and seek are also a form of exercise that will also keep your pooch entertained and mentally stimulated. Intellectual Stimulation In addition to being highly energetic, laboxers are also intelligent dogs that can easily become bored without mental stimulation. If left to their own devices without interactive toys, your mix will chew and rifle through your belongings just to have some fun. And when you are at home, interact and play with your pooch as much as you can to stave off boredom and encourage good behavior. Companionship True to their parent breeds, boxadors are outgoing, people-loving, and easy-going dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and families. Bred to be loving companions, laboxers are delighted when they are involved in all family activities and are best suited for large families. This mix craves affection and company and can easily develop separation anxiety and other behavioral problems if left at home alone a lot. Ideally, a boxador dog should live in a large family where they will have company at all times. Grooming Most boxerlabs have short glossy coats that are easy to keep clean and are a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Brushing your pooch once or twice a week is enough to remove loose hair and dander and keep their coat clean. In addition to regular brushing, you will also need to bathe your dog once every two months or as needed. Diet An ideal diet for a Lab boxer mix should be formulated for medium to large-sized breeds with high energy. Make sure the food you are feeding to your pooch is rich in protein and reinforced with all essential vitamins and minerals. Like their Labrador retriever parents, this mix has a tendency to gain weight easily and can become obese in no time. To prevent weight gain and all health problems associated with it, feed your dog two times a day and stick to a regular feeding schedule. Known Health Problems The boxerlab is considered a healthy breed, but they are predisposed to some of the same health problems that boxers and Labrador retrievers face. The most common health issues seen in this designer breed are: Hip and elbow dysplasia: Both boxers and Labrador retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so boxerlabs can develop it too. Allergies: Like people, dogs can develop food or environmental allergies. Itching is the most common symptom associated with allergies. However, some dogs also exhibit respiratory problems and might cough, sneeze, wheeze, or have a runny discharge from their eyes or nose. Hypothyroidism: This is a relatively common endocrine problem in dogs caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Dogs suffering from hypothyroidism usually experience symptoms of lethargy, weight gain, and changes to the skin and coat. Life Expectancy The Labrador boxer mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. But, when cared for properly and taken to regular veterinary check ups, this mix can live longer. Highly intelligent and eager to please, most laboxers are fairly easy to house train, and learn basic obedience. Boxerlabs, like all other dogs, react the best to positive reinforcement training techniques and reward-based training. The idea behind this approach is to reward good behavior using treats or praise and to ignore bad behavior. This type of training has been proven to give the best results and is highly effective even if you are dealing with an extremely willful dog. Besides training, laboxers can also benefit from early socialization and should be exposed to many different people, situations, sounds, and sights from a young age. Early socialization can help your laboxer puppy get used to other people and pets and grow into a friendly and well-rounded dog. Who Should Own A Boxador? Bred to be a loyal and devoted companion, the Lab boxer mix is best suited for active people and families with children. This friendly mix craves companionship and is best suited for large homes and families who can spend time and play with their dog every day. Buying A Boxer Lab Mix Puppy Spend some time researching reputable Lab boxer mix breeders before you decide to welcome a laboxer puppy into your home. Since this is a fairly new designer breed, be prepared to spend more time researching and tracking down a reputable breeder. Once you locate a breeder you like, schedule an appointment to meet the puppies and the mother and to inspect the facilities they are kept in. If by any chance the breeder refuses to show you the conditions the puppies are kept in, walk away and look for another breeder. A reputable breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and will also be able to provide health certificates for both parents and all puppies. However, you may end up paying more, depending on the breeder, your location, lineage, and gender. History Of The Breeds Boxer Originating in Germany, the boxer is a medium to a large-size working dog breed that was used as a guard dog. Although they might seem intimidating, boxers are goofy and mischievous canines that make great family companions. Highly energetic, easy to groom, and loving, the boxer is a great choice if you are looking for a loyal family pet that can also double as a guard dog. Easy to train, friendly, gentle, and affectionate, Labs make great family pets and companions to people of all ages including children. Due to their amazing temperament and high trainability, Labrador retrievers are often used as service dogs for people with disabilities and make great guide dogs. Boxerlabs make amazing pets for active people or large families with children. This loyal, energetic, playful, and friendly mix forms strong bonds with its people and likes to be involved in all family activities. If you are active and have enough time to interact and play with your dog every day, the Lab boxer mix will be a great pet. Are Boxer Labs aggressive? However, they form strong bonds with their owners and are naturally suspicious of strangers. Therefore, early socialization is a must if you want your mix to grow into a friendly and well-behaved dog. The Boxador is a designer mixed dog breed that is a cross between a Boxer and a Labrador Retriever. They are sometimes also called a Boxer Lab Mix, although Boxador tends to be a more popular term. Because this is not an established purebred dog, the Boxador is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other official organizations. With mixed breed puppies, you can get any combination of the physical characteristics and character traits of the parent breeds. A Boxador puppy could take completely after their Boxer parent or their Lab parent or could be some combination of both. In general, Boxadors tend to be intelligent, friendly, energetic, and loving. Overall, these dogs tend to make a great addition to a family. Both the Boxer and the Labrador are known for their happy-go-lucky, friendly temperament. They also have a playful spirit and are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. In general, the Boxador tends to have a similar temperament. Playtime with small children should be supervised as these dogs will grow into large, energetic dogs and small children can be knocked over by their excitedly wagging tails and energetic play. They tend to be loyal, friendly, and playful and love spending time with their families. Due to the hunting instinct in the parent breeds, a Boxador may have a high prey drive and enjoy chasing things. Boxadors tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They do tend to be a better fit for larger homes with a fenced-in backyard where they can run. However, as long as they receive plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well to apartment living. As with many dog breeds, they are sensitive to extreme heat and can be sensitive to cold. But, overall, this dog breed does well in just about any climate. They love to be around their families and have a high energy level, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Mixed dog breeds can inherit some, all, or none of the potential health issues present in their parent breeds. When it comes to the Boxador, they are a relatively healthy breed. Some of the potential health conditions to be aware of include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, and heart conditions. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parent breeds and to see any relevant health clearances can help allay potential concerns about health you may have. Both the Boxer and the Lab are highly intelligent dog breeds that are eager to please their owners, which makes them both highly trainable. You can expect your Boxador to be highly trainable as well. These dogs respond well to positive training techniques and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Although it tends not to be necessary with this breed, enrolling in puppy training and obedience classes is an added bonus and can offer some extra opportunities for socialization. Boxadors usually have a short and dense coat. They will shed moderately year-round and more heavily twice a year as the seasons change. Generally, brushing their coat a few times a week is sufficient. This will help keep your dog more comfortable and will keep some of the loose fur contained to the brush instead of all of around your house. In terms of bathing, these dogs only require the occasional bath or more often as needed if they have gotten dirty or have been swimming. Dental care for dogs is especially important. Both of the parent breeds of this designer dog breed are high-energy, so you should expect your Boxador to have a high energy level as well. In addition to regular daily walks and playtime, your Boxador may enjoy running with you, going for a swim, going hiking with you, and taking trips to the dog park. They also are a good fit for several canine sports like dock diving, agility, and more. Their joints are still developing before this age and can be damaged by strenuous exercise. A fully-grown Boxador will usually stand 20 to 25 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 55 to 80 pounds. A Boxador generally lives 10 to 14 years. Boxador Puppies for Sale.

From a very young age we train our puppies in a few things that aid them in being successful adults as family members, companions, service dogs, agility dogs. The Coltriever is a mid sized dog, they weigh between pounds and are built similar to a Golden Retriever. Available Puppies Our next litter will be in September ready for their new home in early November. Usually we have… Early Learning Each of my litters is born inside my home, rather than a kennel setting. This allows them to hear the sounds and smell the scents associated with a household from the very start. They are continually exposed to the everyday sights and sounds of a family home. This includes potentially scary sounds such as vacuum… About Our Puppies I have been raising Coltrievers in Lacey, Washington since .They are a designer dog, which is a mix of Golden Retriever and Border Collie breeds. They are a mid- sized dog, weighing between 40 and 80 pounds. The conformation of a Coltriever is similar to a Golden Retriever. Their colors vary with some black… Thank you for giving me my Sprinkle. We have never owned a dog that is so calm. Not a nervous bone in her. You did a wonderful job picking her for me. They are active, dedicatedly loyal, and have an intense eagerness to please their owners just for a little attention. Their obedience is quickly reflected through their affectionate and friendly nature, thus making them good with kids. Though some Gollies might tend to be shy, they are highly sociable, being in a jovial mood most of the time. Hence, they do not do well when kept alone for extended periods. Some dog enthusiasts think that so much of cheerfulness in their character failed to make them a good guardian. This assumption, however, is not correct, since their alertness is readily apprehensible from their barking instinct. Gollies are very active and responsive, making for excellent watchdogs. They would start to bark the moment they come across a stranger around and alert their family members about the same. Care Exercise These canids need regular exercise to burn down their calories. Take them out on a walk or jog on a routine basis to channelize their energy positively. Let them play in an enclosed yard if you have one. A total of around 90 minutes of daily physical activities is enough for this breed. Grooming The coat of the Golden Collie is average to long, and their shedding is moderate to high. For this, they need high maintenance, especially if your dog is double-coated, having a long and rough outer coat with a soft undercoat. Brush them regularly, at least times a week, so as to keep their coat smooth and glossy. Regular brushing also promotes blood flow and enhances hair growth. Hence, it is better to consult your breeder about the health history of its parents. Interactive toys that make sounds or dispense treats would give your dog the incentive to work harder. Try frozen Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter. This trick should work. To prevent your dog from being overly excited when your guests come in, teach him to display a controlled behavior when the doorbell rings. Ask your puppy to sit close to the door, and press the doorbell, holding a treat in your hand. If your puppy starts to show any sign of excitement, go close to it and ask it to calm down, showing the gift, but do not give it away. Next, repeat the process and do the same, if your dog shows any sign of excitement. Give the treat as it obeys you and sits down calmly. Doing this activity from time to time would help your dog will learn to put a check to its overly wild behavior as well as refrain from incessant barking habits. Since they are known to shed frequently, they can cause allergies and other irritations. The basic grooming processes needed are: Brushing their furs weekly with a solid bristle brush to prevent them from shedding their coats too much; Cleaning their ears weekly to prevent ear infections; Bathing of one to two times a month; and Having their nails trimmed once they get too long. For first time owners who do not have experience with grooming dogs, this can be difficult because this breed requires high-maintenance grooming. You should see a veterinarian first to ask the grooming practices necessary for your dog. You need to follow the practices always. Excessive shedding is possible, so bath should be given at most twice a month. Their skins can also dry out if bathing is done irregularly. When bathing your dog, use a shampoo specialized for their furs to keep the quality. This mix is also prone to ear infections. Prevention is better than cure, so every week cleaning of the ear should be done. Their ears are one of the essential parts of their body. They cannot carry out their daily activities if their ears are in bad condition. Also, you must also trim their nails if they got too long to avoid future injuries from scratches. There are times that they even scratch their skins, so you must always monitor their nails. Golden Border Retriever Health Problems If the parents of the mixes have disorders, the chances are high that the offspring can inherit the disorder. However, there are cases in which the puppies are healthy even if one of the parents is diagnosed with a disease. It is better to check the pedigree of the crossbreed to verify if it is free from a severe illness. In biology, there is an incident known as hybrid vigor; it means that the offspring is better than its parents in several aspects such as physical characteristics and health. When you adopt a Golden Retriever Border Collie crossbreed, these are the following disorders that can attack your puppy: Skin Allergies Heart Diseases Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Because this breed shed too much, they are vulnerable to skin allergies. Once grooming is not taken care of, allergies can follow. Aside from the allergies that the shedding will bring you, your dog can also be affected by excessive removals of coats. Even though they are medium-sized dogs, bloating is also common to them. When the food matrix is not followed correctly, obesity can happen; it is a prerequisite to severe disorders. The excess weight of your dog can result in heart problems. As mentioned, this breed is highly intelligent, one of the mental diseases that this breed can develop is the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD which can be similar to humans. It will be a nuisance not just for your dog, but to you also. If they have their check-ups regularly, most of these mixes live up to 15 years. Make sure to prioritize their health. Border Collie Mixed with Golden Retriever Food Requirements Researches have proven that the amount of food intake in an individual dog is varying. The nutritional requirement of each dog is dependent on factors like weight, height, and the activities done by your dog. In the case of Border Collie mixed with Golden Retriever puppies, there is also no suggested food servings. For this breed, table foods or the foods consumed by humans cannot be fed to them. They are sensitive regarding the food they are eating. The dog food that you must give to the puppies should contain the necessary amount of vitamins and minerals for their growth. Puppies can be fed thrice in a day. As they grow, their needs for food is decreasing. To prevent obesity in dogs, a meal given twice in a day is recommended. Make a schedule on when to feed them so that they will be used to it; make sure to follow it regularly. In feeding your dogs, make sure to check the suggested amount of servings in the pack of the dog food that you bought. Monitoring the feeding habit of your dogs is essential. Their optimum performance will be achieved if they are given the right amount of food. There are also diets designed for highly skilled dogs. You should consult a veterinarian if you are planning a diet for your dog. Make sure to match their food matrix with their activities. If you want to give your pooch a happy and healthy life, start with nutrition. Avoid food that could be harmful to their health, such as the worst dry dog food. In case you brought a puppy to your home and the little munchkin is just getting used to regular food, take a look at the list of the best puppy food brands. Older dogs should also eat healthy food which is suggested in the best senior dry dog list. Your puppies come from two different parents, which makes them more likely to grow to love dry dog food for small dogs or best large breed dry dog food. They require long hours of exercise. An average of 90 minutes a day is recommended. The hours needed for their exercise is comparably longer to the number of minutes required by some breeds. The reason for this is their highly active lifestyle. Without exercise, the level of their energy can be difficult to match. Even if you are not supervising them, they can exercise on their own. Allocate a place in your home where they can play around. They will eventually stop exercising once they get tired because these dogs know their limits. If you have a backyard at your home, it is the perfect spot for your dog to exercise. Let it run around your yard. With that simple activity, risks of developing serious heart conditions can be reduced. Besides, extra calories can also be burned; therefore, they can be less prone to obesity. As discussed, Golden Collie can make a great exercise companion. You can have them join you in your exercise routines such as: Jogging. This means they are not considered a purebred dog or a designer dog breed. Border Collies are athletic, loyal dogs with a high energy level. They love to move and work with their families. You can also meet the mother dog in-person for an idea about what to expect regarding general size and temperament. On the Border Collie side, you have a highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dog that loves to be active and loves to work. Border Collies get along well with other dogs and children, but can be reserved or slightly suspicious towards strangers. Otherwise, they will find their own entertainment, which might result in them herding your children or a flock of sheep into your kitchen. The Border Collie Mix could take all of its characteristics from the Border Collie, from the other parent dog breed in the mix, or be any combination of characteristics from both. Before bringing a Border Collie Mix home, make sure you take some time to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed of the litter. This will give you a good idea of what possibilities to prepare for in your Border Collie Mix puppy. The Border Collie is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They may be a high-energy dog breed that prefers wide open spaces, but they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. A well-exercised, mentally engaged Border Collie is also okay with being alone. In terms of climate, this dog breed does best in a moderate climate as they do not do well in hot or cold climates. With a Border Collie Mix, you could end up with a dog that is moderately adaptable like the Border Collie. Or, you could end up with a dog more similar to the other parent breed. This could result in a more adaptable or less adaptable dog depending on the cross. Having a conversation with the breeder about the other parent breed can clear up some of the confusion and give you a better idea of what to expect. Border Collies are generally healthy, but can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. You can also ask about the genetic history of the parents and check out health screenings and health clearances to rule out some conditions. On the Border Collie side, you have a dog that is highly intelligent and eager to learn. They are generally difficult for the average person to train, so you will want to enroll in obedience and training classes with your Border Collie Mix puppy regardless of the other parent breed. Even if the dog breed in the cross is highly trainable for novice dog owners, there is the possibility the puppy will pick up Border Collie characteristics and be more difficult to train. A well-trained and properly socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a well-rounded dog, so make sure you start training and socialization early. Border Collies have a weather-resistant double coat that requires weekly brushing. They also have heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change and need to be brushed more frequently during this time. Depending on the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix, their coat could require more or less grooming. Finding out about the other parent breed from the breeder will give you an idea of what you could expect when it comes to coat. Regardless of the coat, all dogs need to have their nails trimmed, teeth brushed, and ears checked regularly. For most dogs, trimming nails once a month is sufficient. When it comes to dental care for your dog , brushing their teeth daily is recommended. This will help prevent the tartar and plaque buildup that leads to dental disease. If your Border Collie Mix has ears that drop down, they are more prone to moisture and developing an infection. Regularly checking them and cleaning as needed helps reduce the risk of ear infections in your dog. Border Collies have a lot of energy and never seem to get tired. They love to be moving and working. Plus, they were originally bred to run several miles a day and they still have the energy to do so. It is important that you are prepared to handle a high energy working dog when you choose a Border Collie Mix puppy. If the other parent breed is a couch potato, your puppy could end up having a lower energy level. A Border Collie tends to weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and usually stands 18 to 22 inches tall. The other parent breed could cause this to vary. So, be sure to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix. Also, make sure you stop by to meet the mother dog. There are always exceptions, but the size of the mother will at least give you something to work with. A Border Collie typically lives 12 to 15 years. You could expect a similar range in your Border Collie Mix with the understanding that the other parent breed could affect the range one way or the other. Featured Border Collie Mix Article. I had to know what she was, where she was from, and how I could get one. I was told she was a Crooked Rooster Coltriever. Then, I remembered Crooked Rooster! I looked it up, contacted Holly and heard back within a couple hours. We talked on the phone for over an hour and a half. I fell in love with what Coltriever stood for and where they came from instantly. We set up a time to come tour the farm, and meet the puppies. We were placed in a pen with all the little all black Coltriever angels, and immediately saw Baloo. We knew he was the one. Baloo was the most perfect little squishy guy I had ever met. We chose him and have never looked back. He has changed our life for the better and has been the most amazing buddy we could have asked for. He loves other dogs so much, and so we contacted Holly to see if she had any litters available. She did! We went to meet them, and fell in love instantly with Tibbs, just like Baloo. Holly talked us through our meet and greet with the boys and what we should look for in how they interact. Holly is always very knowledgeable about her puppies and it makes you feel very safe about making this big of a life decision. I am now obsessed with our two Coltrievers, and am excited to have them apart of our life forever!

Momo has never been shaves, but she is certainly "shave curious". The below is a great article from www. We found it super interesting and helpful so are reprinting it here! Researching this issue and talking with experts makes one thing very clear: Opinions are divided, with half advocating shaving pugs in the summer, and the other half advising against it. As a pug parent, the best you can do is make a good, well-reasoned and well-researched decision. Consult a trusted veterinarian or groomer to get their input on the subject. Ultimately, though, the decision is yours. Trust yourself to make the right decision for your adorable pug! Two sides of the argument: 1. This is the main reason for arguing against shaving a pug. The fur insulates the pug from hot and cold; without that defense, they are at greater risk of becoming too hot in the summer, or too cold in the winter. According to Kathy Salzberg, a Certified Master Groomer who has been grooming pets since , pugs should not be shaved. That double coat protects them from heat and cold. Pugs are indoor dogs anyway, so there is no reason to shave them. Bred as companion animals, pugs are comfortable at room temperature. They should not spend too much time in the heat. Shaving may be an unnecessary expense. Shaving to keep them cool may actually pose a danger to your pug. Having a shaved pug might lull you into thinking they are okay outside for more significant amounts of time. Even shaved pugs cannot tolerate extensive time outdoors in the heat. They are still prone to overheating and sunstroke, and shaving adds potential sunburn to the mix. More bug bites are also a real possibility for the pug without a lot of hair for protection. The pug simply sheds shorter hairs, not fewer. There is really no point in shaving a double-coated dog. Perhaps an even stronger voice in support of shaving pugs in the summer comes from pug owners themselves. A veterinarian may direct a pug owner to shave her pug if the dog has a medical problem such as fungus or severe allergy. Shave a pug for your own medical reasons. Sarah Hadley from Broadway Veterinary Hospital. Reputable groomers recommend shaving pugs. The fact is shaving pugs makes money for groomers. But they are also believers in the benefits of a well-executed shave accompanied by warnings about too much sun right after the shave. Anna Stallcup from Nampa, Idaho owns a pug and has had experience in shaving her pug. Protect your shaved pug with sunscreen if you are out in the sun for longer than 10 minutes. This is important especially during the first weeks following the shave. For those days, bring along sunscreen for both yourself and your pug. However, all sunscreens are not equal. Research the best sunscreen for your pug. Whether your pug is shaved or not, be aware that the areas on a dog most likely to get sunburned are the nose, tips of the ears, around the mouth, the underbelly, and eyelids. Black pugs are the ones who really benefit from being shaved in the summer. Because their dark fur absorbs instead of reflects heat, black pugs are better candidates for a summer shave than their fawn. Really the answer is simple, a little elbow grease goes a long way to help stop pug shedding. The best way to stop pug hair shedding is regular grooming. It helps reduce the hair pugs they give off during a normal day and doubles as a bonding time! March 11, Pugs will win you over with their big bulgy eyes, their friendly demeanor, and their funny antics. They make the cutest puppies and if you have kids, they will absolutely melt for them. As they grow, you will start seeing that after hugging, playing with your Pug the cloth start showing hair stuck to them, at which point you may ask yourself; How much do Pugs shed? They are not that large… Pugs shed a lot, I mean, really a lot. Pugs shed all year and will require care and grooming if you want to keep the fur situation under some form of control. Not as simple as it seems Every pug owner becomes aware of this issue sooner or later and has to come to terms with it and learn how to deal, cope and manage. Why do Pugs shed so much? Pugs are no that that large and have relatively short fur. So why is it really that they shed so excessively even compared to dog four times their size? Double coat Whereas most dogs can have a short or long coat of fur, Pugs actually have a double coat. Not all Pugs have a double coat. The vast majority of fawn colored Pugs do; however, most black Pugs have a single coat. Not only do they have a double coat, but it is also denser than most dogs. The average dog will have hairs per inch and a Pug may have up to or hairs per inch, that is about times more hairs. Quick Growth cycle Your Pugs hair, like most other dogs, has a growth cycle in which there are four stages. The growing faze, known as Anagen, is when there is active growth of the hair. Second is the Catagen stage, where the hair has reached its designated length and stops growing. Next is the resting stage, called Telogen, where no growing actually occurs and is more of a static faze. Finally, there is the Exogen stage where the hair falls and the shedding occurs. These cycles do not work simultaneously on all the hairs so your dog will not find itself bald between cycles. Pugs tend to move through this cycle quicker than most dogs and also have a very short Telogen stage. This means there will constantly be hairs growing and shedding at the same time. What about seasonal shedding? There may be slight variation due to seasons to get ready for growing the winter coat in the fall and to get rid of it in the spring, but after many generations of being an indoor dog who is not really exposed to the seasons and does not depends on a thick coat for warmth in the winter, there may not be a significant difference. Diet and health may actually make more of a difference than the calendar. At what age do Pugs start shedding? Even though Pugs have a double coat, they are not born with it. Pug puppies are born with a single coat and will shed it to grow their adult double coat. Since smaller dogs mature fairly fast this may start at months old. Sadly, the frustration is not going to help and neither is your vet. There is no magic cure, your Pug is going to shed, generously. Come to terms The first thing you have to do, in order to rationally deal with the shedding issue, is come to terms with it. Although there some steps and measures you can take to reduce the phenomena and its effects, there is no way to completely eliminate it while still having a Pug at home. Take care of the Fur Brushing is probably the number one action you can take, to reduce the number of hairs that are accumulating on your cloth, furniture, and floor. Assuming the rate and amount of hair your Pug is growing and shedding, the more you will remove actively, the less there will be in other places. The bonus is that when brushing, you are moving the dead hairs from the Exogen stage. What that means is the fur will be comprised of more young and healthy hairs and as such will also be softer and shinier. It is advised to brush your pug outside of your home, maybe in the park or an open area. If that is not possible do it in the bathroom or in the tub. Also, wear something which will be easy to clean. There is going to be a lot of hair involved. Some brushes have a vacuum accessory that may also help. Try and make it a pleasant experience for your dog, maybe combine the brushing with some back rubbing, you want your dog to like it and cooperate and not have to have to fight for it every time. Routine The more you brush the less hair you will have to deal with. Two to three times a week should give you a noticeable improvement, but you can brush your Pug daily. Try to work it into your daily playtime routine and your fluffy one might even look forward to it. If you spring a treat into the routine it might even be better. Depth To make the brushing effective you have to brush the undercoat as well as the guard hairs. Make sure you really get in there. There is a wide variety of brushes, gloves and other products you will want to try out, to find out what really works for you and your Pug. I have compiled a comprehensive list of brushes including the famous Furminator, the SlickPro self-cleaning brush the Pet Grooming Glove and more in our Recommended Gear page. Pugs are also known to be sensitive to certain foods and detergents and are prone to allergies We used to clean our Pugs nose folds and paws with the same wipes we used for our baby. After a while, we noticed that these areas were always pinkish and irritated. Keep it nourished Skin and coat health is probably most affected by nutrition. They come in a variety of shapes and products and are excellent not just skin care but many other medical issues in humans too, by the way. They are commercially available from vegetable sources such as Flaxseed oil, Soybean oil, Canola or Walnut oil. However, dogs do not absorb and metabolize vegetable-based oils as well as we do and therefore it advisable to use deep sea fish oil such as Salmon oil. You only need small amounts depending on age and weight so make sure you get good quality oil and properly store it. Anti-Shedding Pills Do consult your doctor before giving any of those pills. The good ones are just multivitamins with Omega 3 masked as a treat. Some others have more of the treat and less of the vitamin. In any case, they may be too rich if given too often. Personally, I prefer to give my supplements as supplements, but regardless of personal feeding preferences, if your Pug is healthy and eating a balanced diet, these pills may do some good to the skin and coat, but they will not stop the shedding. Keep it clean Clean skin will also help keep it healthy. In most cases, a dog living at home will not really NEED to take a bath, hardly ever. We tend to project our hygienic standards to our pets and if you share your house and even your bed with a dog, it is understandable but, a dog is still a dog. Their skin needs to have its natural oiliness and constant cleaning may actually do more harm than good. Having said that, if you do want to give your pug a bath, make sure you use the proper products. If you feel the need to wash your pooch on a weekly bases make sure to use a very mild and gentle detergent. Shampoos There is a huge variety of shampoos and detergents, catering to anyone from the frugal and practical to the most discerning and pampering dog lover. Most of them are concentrated enough that a few dabs may just be enough. Lucky for us Pug owners we can splurge on high-quality shampoos, they will last for a very long time. What about all the hair everywhere? If you can adopt a laid-back attitude towards the hair everywhere, your life will be easier, but as we know, we all have our limits and at some point some sooner than others you will have to do something about. Hair on the floor Wal to wall carpeting will certainly be challenging. If it is resembling your fawn Pug in color or black , you may not see it as much… We have ditched rugs and carpets a long time ago. We live in a warm enough climate that a Granite floor is both comfortable and practical. Regardless, a good vacuum cleaner is an asset to any Pug owner. I can also recommend one of the robotic vacuum cleaners. Ours used to collect a large fistful of fur on a daily bases and made life a little easier. Be sure it is either strong enough to handle pet hair or even a dedicated set of brushes to better deal with the challenge. Hair on your clothes If you are planning to cuddle with your pug and watch a movie, just throw your clothes into the washing machine. They come with multiple layers of adhesive and are excellent at picking up stray hairs or localized patches. The only downside is if Furniture If you are planning on new living room furniture, it is a good time to consider both the type of material as well as color. Leather, for example, makes cleaning easy and vacuuming a breeze. Black leather with a fawn Pug could be problematic as every tiny hair will be visible. Consider a color or pattern which will camouflage the hairs between cleaning not to get frustrated the day or a few hours after thoroughly cleaning up. Additionally, there are a few more products which can alleviate the problem on a day to day base. There are Mega sized Lint Pickup Rollers which will not get clogged as fast as the smaller ones, and brushes that work well on different surfaces. If there a larger concentration in her favorite spot the roller will get clogged very quickly. Additional Questions Do pugs Drool? Pugs do love to cuddle and rub their head against yours, whatever is in the area, fortunately, Pugs are not serious droolers. They will lick you and rub against you to the point of somewhere between moist and wet, but usually, a drooling Pug will be an indication of a dental issue of sorts. Do Pugs Bark a lot? Pugs are generally not a breed that barks a lot. Some small breeds seem to try and make for their size with noise and will yap at anyone and anything for no apparent reason. And the Best Brushes and Tools to Use Overview Pugs are considered to be a heavy shedding breed, though, there can be a difference between black and fawn coats. The level of shedding will vary from moderate to severe at times. Other factors come into play such as age puppy vs adults and season. But, one thing is clear, if you have a Pug you need to be prepared for what is involved in having a high-shedding dog that may leave hairs all around the house and have a coat full of dead hairs that need to be pulled out. Tips to Help Manage a Pug's Shedding - The 4 things you can do to help control shedding and keep your house fur-free. The Best Brushes and Grooming Tools for Pugs - Top recommendations for quickly and easily pulling out as many dead hairs as possible. Brushing Tips - Some helpful tips to make each brushing session as productive as possible. Why Pugs Shed So Much There are several reasons why Pugs shed so much: Most non-black Pug dogs fawn, silver-fawn, apricot-fawn and some black Pugs have double coats, a soft inner layer and a short outer layer. With double the coat, you have double the shedding compared to a single-coated breed. So, again, the more hairs there are, the more shedding there is. For all canines, the hairs on the coat go through a 3-step process: Growth, rest, and shed. For Pugs, this 3-step cycle moves more rapidly than with some other breeds. Elements that Can Affect a Pug's Level of Shedding There are some factors that affect how much a Pug sheds; some you can control and others you can't: Type of coat. If you have a black Pug, the coat may be a single layer that sheds moderately, but some do have the double coat. If you have a non-black Pug, chances are that it's a double layered coat that sheds heavily. The season. Though Pugs shed all year round, there can be a significant increase in both the autumn and the spring. While this seasonal shedding is somewhat dependent on temperature changes it is also triggered by changes in sunlight hours. When days start to become shorter in autumn, this triggers the body to shed some fur as a thicker winter coat grows in. When days start to become longer in the springtime, this sends a new trigger to the body to shed the winter coat. Young Pug puppies have minor shedding compared to their adult counterparts. Once a Pug reaches the 1 to 1. Baths can trigger a Pug to shed due to the massaging process that frees loose hairs and the the cleansing agents in the shampoo breaking up natural body oil that was holding some of the dead hairs in the tightly packed coat. However, this is a good thing since it means you can be prepared for it. Heat cycle, for females. Un-spayed females that enter into heat cycles may have extreme shedding as the cycle is winding down. This is connected to fluctuating hormone levels. Tips to Help Manage a Pug's Shedding Sure, this breed can shed a lot, but this element is worth it to have such an adorable and loving canine family member. And, while there is nothing that will completely stop a Pug dog from shedding, there are lots of things you can do to keep shedding under control and keep things manageable. Routinely brush the coat to remove loose and dead hairs. When a Pug sheds, some hairs will fall to the floor and some will stay trapped in the coat. The more that you can pull from the coat, the fewer will find throughout your home, on your furniture, clung to your clothes, etc. And, for those hairs trapped down deep, they become encased in body oil, block skin pores, and start to get stinky if they are not removed. So, pulling these out will help keep a Pug's coat healthy and prevent bad odors. It is recommended to brush a Pug at least 3 times per week and as often as once a day. It is also best to go through the coat immediately before giving a bath and right afterward. Use a tool that goes deep enough into the thick coat. There are lots of types of brushes and grooming tools for dogs because there are lots of different types of canine coats. You'll want to avoid brushes that would just skim over a Pug's coat, like bristle brushes, and use a tool, brush, or grooming mitt that is designed to reach deep into thick coats and latch onto loose and dead hairs. Omega fatty acids supplements. Poor coat quality that results in hair breakage can mean extra shedding. So, keeping your Pug's fur in excellent shape can help control shedding levels. For this, omega fatty acids is the type of supplement that can be very beneficial and additionally can promote healthy skin and help reduce any joint pain or inflammation. There are different types of omegas and the best combination for good skin and coat health is EPA eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA docosahexaenoic acid fatty acids which are both derived from fish. Wild fish is preferred over farmed fish, since farmed fish are often fed vegetable oil-based pellets which can interfere with the levels of EPA and DHA. Control shedded fur in the house. The more loose hairs you find on your floors, furniture, and personal items, the more it will seem that your Pug is shedding. So, keeping these hairs in the house to a minimum plays a role in managing things. A tape lint roller can work very well for picking up hairs from clothes, fabric-covered furniture, bedding, and small rugs. For large areas of all types of flooring surfaces, a vacuum cleaner specifically designed to pull up pet hairs and trap dander like the Shark TruePet Vacuum for Carpet and Hard Floors can be very handy when having a breed like the Pug. This has a detachable 'pet tool' hand-held vacuum for getting smaller areas that fallen hairs can cling to like steps, chairs, and even window blinds. And, the HEPA filter and anti-allergen seal catches and traps .It's best to go over any carpets or furniture with fabric coverings at least once a week since the longer hairs remain the deeper they will work themselves down into the fibers. It reaches deep down through even super-thick and densely-packed fur. And it does this without doing any sort of damage to the top coat, which is important. This is made with stainless steel combs which are very durable. As an added plus, it's really comfortable to hold. Note that this is best for fawn Pugs not black Pugs with single-layer coats. There is nothing at all to hold. You just slip this pair of gloves onto your hands and go over your Pug's coat. As an added plus, most dogs find this pleasurable since it feels like getting a friendly petting massage. If you're looking for both efficiency and ease-of-use, this is the best choice. As a Finishing Brush, a Bristle Brush Once you've pulled out all of the loose hairs from your Pug's coat, you may wonder if there's something else you should be doing. While it is not mandatory, going over the coat with a quality bristle brush like the Chris Christensen Soft Tufted Boar Brush will create a 'finished' look and add shine. This sort of brush is also terrific for when you're looking to simply remove debris and touch up the coat without needing to de-shed your Pug. In addition, if you are using a leave-in spray like Nootie Daily Spritz to protect the integrity of the hairs, help the coat repel dirt, debris, urine splashes, allergens, and contact irritants, and keep the fur properly moisturized, use the bristle brush to distribute the product through the coat. Brushing Tips 1. You may be wondering how long you need to brush a Pug for. Five minutes? Until there are no more loose hairs coming out? Quite honestly, if you went over the coat until zero loose hairs remained, you'd be brushing your Pug forever. So, the goal should be to set aside 10 to 15 minutes every 1 to 3 days to remove as much fur as you can in that session. If your Pug is relaxed and you want to continue for a bit longer, that's just fine. But never feel as if you have to keep going past that point. It's easy to focus on brushing just the flanks sides and back of a Pug, but going over the back of the head, neck, chest, legs and even the tail are important as well. This will help control heavy shedding, including how many hairs fall out around the house and how many are stuck in the coat. Whether you are using a de-shedding tool, grooming glove, or bristle brush, go in the direction of the fur growth, not against it. Excessive Fur Loss Though Pugs shed a lot, normal shedding for this breed is never so much that the coat looks thinned out or as if it is missing spots of fur. So, if your Pug is shedding to this extent, this is considered abnormal and may be linked to any number of health issues. Possible reasons for excessive fur loss with Pugs includes mange, severe allergies, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, and alopecia X. Coat loss to this degree should be diagnosed by the veterinarian. Did you find this article to be helpful? This will allow you to receive newsletters that announce new articles and important updates. There are a few things that cause pugs to shed: Coat: a pug with a double coat will shed more than a pug with a single coat. Age: puppies shed less than adult pugs. Shedding will increase once the pug reaches age 1. Pugs will release more hair during and after the bath. Make sure their post bath zoomies and shedding! These routine brushings should happen on the regular at least 3x a week and as often as once a day. Your house and clothes will thank you! I recommend taking your pug outside to brush, either in your backyard or on a stoop. That way the hair is released into the wild instead of into your house. Here are some good pug brushes that we recommend:. If excess shedding is a deal breaker, consider a black pug — They tend to have single coats and shed less than double coated apricot or fawn pugs. Why do pugs shed so much? Anyone who shares their home with a furry friend will tell you that shedding is one of the few downsides of adopting a cat or dog. One day your house is clean and tidy and the next, your furniture seems furrier than your pooch! Shedding is totally natural, and all cats and dogs shed some of their fur either year-round, seasonally, or both. The first reason is that they shed their fur year-round. The second is that pugs tend to have double coats. It also means they have more fur to shed at any one time than breeds with just a single layer of fur. Other double coated dog breeds are also known to be heavy shedders, including Shiba Inus and huskies. Top reasons why pugs shed so much There are many other non-double coat related reasons that pugs shed so much. Here are some of the most common: Allergies. Pugs are prone to allergies and can suffer from irritation caused by cleaning products, pollen, pest bites, and more. If you suspect your dog is allergic to something — alongside shedding, excessive licking is a key indicator — speak to a vet and try and eliminate possible irritants from your home. Hormonal cycles. You might notice her losing more hair towards the end of those cycles. Pug puppies tend to shed a lot more as they start to transition out of their puppy coat at around three months. They will then continue to shed heavily through adulthood. How can I tell if my pug is shedding too much? These include bald spots, increased itchiness — which could indicate irritation or allergies — and generally thinned fur. All of the above may indicate excessive shedding. Try to use deshedding tools like furminators and other grooming tools like grooming gloves or mitts that are designed for double coated pups, before finishing with a bristle brush. A dedicated once-a-week grooming session should generally do the trick, but some pugs may require daily brushing to keep their shedding under control. Cap the brushing session at fifteen minutes for your own sanity. Pugs also benefit from regular baths and the use of dog shampoo designed for deshedding. Try to bathe your pup once a month to really deep clean their double coat. Just be sure to thoroughly dry them with a towel or blow dryer before letting them back into the house, otherwise you might find your clean bedding ends up covered in wet dog hair! And be especially careful around their tight facial folds. Feeding your pug a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet can help maintain healthy skin and fur and prevent heavy shedding. Some great human snacks to add into their diet include carrots, cooked salmon, and mango in moderation. Remember to keep their water bowl refreshed and topped up, as hydration is also important. As well as ensuring your pug has nutritious dog food and snacks, you can also add supplements to their diet to ensure a healthy coat. Look out for supplements that contain linoleic acid, flaxseed oil, and omega 3 fish oils sometimes called omega fatty acids. They can recommend the right ones for you. Flea, tick, and allergy prevention. Shedding in pugs can sometimes be caused by external irritants, including fleas, ticks, and allergies. Keeping your pug protected against these irritants as much as possible can help reduce unnecessary, excessive shedding. Natural flea treatments and flea and tick collars are effective and convenient, while allergies can be assessed and treated or managed under veterinary supervision. Do Pugs Shed? Pugs shed a lot. Pugs are considered to have originated in China, but there is evidence that suggests they originally came from Tibet, where the extreme cold weather meant that only the dogs with the thickest, most insulating coats were selected for breeding. For this reason, many pugs today have a double-coat, which means they shed almost twice as much as most dogs. In addition, unlike most dog breeds, pugs shed more heavily year-round, with peaks during fall and spring, as their coat adjusts to the weather with the seasons. These reasons coupled with their predispositions to allergies and other health-related issues make for heavy shedding that should be taken into consideration before getting a pug. How Much Do Pugs Shed? But how much do pugs actually shed? Well, it varies from dog to dog, but the one universal truth is: a lot. Here are a few general rules of thumb: Black-coated pugs are less likely to have a double coat, which means that they are likely to shed less. Dogs with allergies will shed more than ones without. Some medical conditions will make your pug shed more. Frequent bathing may remove protective oils and cause more shedding than usual. Pugs shed more in the fall and spring, as their coat prepares for more extreme weather. Tips to Help Reduce Pug Shedding 1. When purchasing food, make sure to get omega-acids rich food. If no quality food is available locally, consider getting dog-specific supplements. Fresh water at all times While keeping your dog hydrated is important for many reasons, one little-known reason is that dry skin may promote shedding. Make sure your pooch has clean, fresh water at all times. My favorite way to get my dogs to drink more is to use a water fountain like this one. They are always happier to drink from a fountain than from a bowl with standing water. Just make sure to clean it regularly and to keep it topped-off for the best performance. Groom Your Pugs Regularly The most important thing is to brush your Pug regularly, groom your dog outside is even better, if at all possible. You can also check our best brush for Pugs guide to get more options. Bathe your pug, but not too often. A recommended interval is between weeks, depending on the weather. Care About the Emotional Health A little-known cause of excessive shedding in dogs is stress. While none of us want to stress our four-legged-friends out, there are several ways in which we may be inadvertently doing just that. Pugs were bred as lap-dogs. As such, their mission in life is… well, you. You are the center of their attention, the love of their life, and the reason for their existence. When you leave them alone for more than hours per day, they get sad, anxious, and stressed. One good way to mitigate this situation is to have friends, family or neighbors check in on your dog during the day. Too many surprises. While pugs are easy-going and friendly beings most of the time , too many new things in a short period of time can vex them, like they would any animal. This is especially true if the changes are big, like moving to a new home or going on a prolonged vacation. In those cases, consider leaving your buddy with a trusted caretaker for a while so most of the changes happen out of its sight. Another great way to mitigate stress-inducing situations is to keep a certain routine so your pug knows what to expect even if their environment changes. This can be a bed-time routine of eating-playing-cuddling, a morning walk followed by a treat or something else. Just keep it consistent so your dog has an anchor in their life. If your home situation is negative or stressed, whether because of a transition period or something else, your pug may be negatively affected by it. A set routine helps your dog anchor in this case, too, so that might be another thing to consider. Keep an Eye on Their Physical Health While this may seem obvious to some, there are several underlying medical conditions that may result in abnormal shedding. Your dog licks or scratches a single spot or area incessantly. Your dog already has allergies. In this case, they may be prone to developing a new allergy. Your dog recently got stung by an insect this may result in an allergic reaction. Your dog is younger than .Your dog is less active, has less appetite, and does not act like his usual self. If you notice any of the above, please consult a veterinarian. In any case, it is advisable to have a veterinarian examine your pug at least once a year, to rule out underlying physical issues that may promote excessive shedding in your dog and to make sure your dog has a long, good life. It helps if you have a professional vacuum created for animal fur, like Bissell. Cover your couches so all you need to do to get them clean is launder them. Use a bed cover for the same reason, or get your pooch their own bed to sleep in. FAQs 1. Do black pugs shed less? How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in North Carolina? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Send us an email or give us call .If approved to adopt one of our puppies you are welcome to place a deposit to hold until your puppy is ready to go home. Greetings from the Wysongs! Northern Indiana based, Bruiser Bulldogs offers purebred English Bulldog Puppies for sale to loving adopters seeking to find a higher quality English Bulldog. Mitch and Erica believe in producing a healthy English Bulldog puppy first and foremost. Through years of research and development, Bruiser Bulldogs is leading a new movement away from the overdone, wrinkled bulldog that has been long plagued by health problems. By embracing a healthier, more athletic look they are able to ensure that each and every English Bulldog Puppy for sale by Bruiser Bulldogs is supported by a platform of health tested, clean genetics. Mitch and Erica believe it is their responsibility to provide emotional and mental support for the lifetime of each and every English Bulldog puppy they produce. To ensure the success of every adoption, Bruiser Bulldogs will always be committed to helping Bruiser Bulldog adopters care for their English Bulldogs to the best of their ability. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. We can connect with our laptops or smartphones and buy things online instantly from the comfort of our own homes. First, the vast majority of adverts selling puppies online are fake. In most cases, the dogs never existed, and buyers are duped out of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many of the puppies for sale on Craigslist have come from puppy mills. These places are run purely for profit and will cut corners to boost their income. They keep their dogs in basic accommodation usually kennels , which are often filthy. The puppies are often weak and sickly, and many die pretty early on. There have also been hundreds of cases where people have bought purebred pups, but these turn out to be mutts. The answer is clear: Avoid Craigslist when buying animals! If you find a reputable local breeder, they will welcome you to the site to visit with them and meet the parent dogs. Some may allow you to see the pups, but access is sometimes restricted to stop them from getting sick. Check out the breeder thoroughly, and be sure to ask questions. A good breeder will tell you to do this anyway, as they have nothing to hide and will be only too pleased to connect you with happy customers who will provide testimonials. Even so, these beautiful animals can be found in shelters across America, along with thousands of other dogs. Instead of buying from a breeder, why not consider giving one of these dogs a forever home? If you think you could provide a loving home to a dog in need, take a look at the following site: 1. They are simply two devoted dog-lovers who spend much of their time helping homeless dogs. All puppies can be a challenge. Like other dogs, the GSD will go through teething. It will need potty training and obedience training. They are very social animals that need company, especially human company. Without this, they become frustrated and sometimes aggressive. German Shepherds shed a lot! Your GSD pup can come in one of 11 standard colors , not just the classic black and tan you often see. GSDs have a lifespan of between 7 and 10 years, and they have a few health concerns to watch out for, including arthritis and hip dysplasia. All good breeders test for the main health problems, which is another reason to use them. In conclusion, the German Shepherd is a wonderful animal that deserves a home that can match its energy and intelligence. Related articles:. The genetics behind coat color in dogs is complex , and it is determined by multiple genes. In the case of the Chocolate Goldendoodle, the Poodle parent may contribute the chocolate gene, while the Golden Retriever parent may carry a gene that dilutes the color to a lighter shade. It is worth noting that while the chocolate color is highly sought after in Goldendoodles, it is not a rare color in either Poodles or Golden Retrievers. However, the combination of the two breeds and their various coat colors can produce a unique and beautiful chocolate coat in the Goldendoodle. While the chocolate color is highly sought after in Goldendoodles, Chocolate Goldendoodles are not considered a rare breed. This is because the color is not exclusive to the Goldendoodle and can be found in other breeds, such as the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. However, it is worth noting that not all Goldendoodles come in the chocolate color. Goldendoodles can come in a variety of coat colors, including cream, black, red , and apricot, among others. The color of a Goldendoodle's coat will depend on the genetics of its parent breeds and the specific breeding practices of the breeder. When searching for a Chocolate Goldendoodle, it is important to do your research and find a reputable breeder who follows ethical breeding practices. A responsible breeder will prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs and work to produce puppies with desirable traits, including a chocolate-colored coat. Understanding the Coat Types of Chocolate Goldendoodles The coat of a Chocolate Goldendoodle can vary depending on the genetics of its parent breeds, making it challenging to predict exactly what kind of coat a puppy will have. However, understanding the different coat types of Poodles and Golden Retrievers can give you a good idea of what to expect from your Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Poodle coats come in a variety of textures, including curly, wavy, and straight. They also come in different densities, from thick and fluffy to fine and silky. Poodles can have a single coat or a double coat, with the latter being more common in smaller Poodle breeds. Double-coated Poodles have a dense, soft undercoat and a topcoat that is coarser and curly. Golden Retriever coats are typically straight or wavy and have a dense, water-repellent undercoat. Their topcoat is longer and can be either flat or slightly wavy. Golden Retrievers shed seasonally, so you can expect some level of shedding from your Chocolate Goldendoodle, especially during shedding season. When a Poodle and a Golden Retriever are bred, their offspring can inherit any combination of these coat types. Chocolate Goldendoodles can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat, and it can be dense or silky, depending on the specific genetics of the parents. Some Chocolate Goldendoodles will have a single coat, while others will have a double coat. Chocolate Goldendoodle Coat Types Straight Chocolate Coat The Straight Coat is a low-maintenance coat type that is ideal for people who prefer a simple grooming routine. This type of coat is usually straight or slightly wavy, with a soft and smooth texture. The coat may be shorter than other coat types, making it less prone to matting and tangling. Straight Chocolate Goldendoodles do shed, but they require minimal grooming, such as brushing once or twice a week, and occasional trimming to maintain the coat's length and shape. This coat is usually tight and springy, with a soft and plush texture. Curly Chocolate Goldendoodles are typically low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with allergies. However, the tight curls require regular grooming, including frequent brushing and clipping to prevent matting and tangling. Professional grooming every weeks is recommended for this coat type. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat The Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat is a beautiful and low-maintenance coat type that is a cross between the straight and curly coat types. This type of coat is usually longer than the straight coat and has a gentle wave or loose curl. The coat may have a shaggy appearance, especially around the ears and face, adding to its charming appearance. This coat type requires moderate grooming, such as regular brushing and occasional trimming to keep the coat from matting or tangling. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Goldendoodles are low-shedding but may require professional grooming every weeks. It is not uncommon for Chocolate Goldendoodles to change color as they grow older. This change in color is a natural part of the dog's aging process and is caused by several factors, including genetics, sun exposure, and the environment. One of the main reasons for the change in color is due to genetics. The genes responsible for coat color can be turned on and off throughout a dog's life, leading to changes in color over time. Additionally, certain coat colors can be dominant over others, which can affect how a dog's coat develops as they grow. Sun exposure can also play a role in changing the color of a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Just like human hair, a dog's coat can lighten or darken due to sun exposure. Exposure to sunlight can bleach the coat, causing it to become lighter, or darken the coat, leading to a more vibrant color. Finally, the environment can also impact a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat color. Exposure to certain chemicals or pollutants in the air or water can affect the coat's texture and color, leading to changes in the dog's appearance over time. Generally, chocolate Goldendoodles are much like other Goldendoodle varieties, as they are also smart, friendly, and playful. For starters, the chocolate Goldendoodle is among the 13 Goldendoodles colors we have to date. Like the other colors of this mixed breed dog, chocolate Goldendoodles can come in patterns like sable, parti , merle , brindle, tuxedo, phantom, and abstract. However, since chocolate Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and other international purebred dog registries. This is why these beautifully-colored dogs cannot show off their coats and stunning looks in conformation shows organized by the AKC. The same is true with other Golden Retriever and Poodle mixes. Are Chocolate Goldendoodles Rare? Unfortunately, chocolate Goldendoodles are quite rare. The chocolate color is a recessive gene, which means both parents need to carry the chocolate color gene to produce a Goldendoodle. Producing a chocolate Goldendoodle can be quite difficult because Golden Retrievers do not have the chocolate gene. Thus, breeders need to breed a Poodle with a Goldendoodle that carries the gene. However, while it may take some time to find a breeder that produces this color, the chocolate Goldendoodle is not as rare as blue, gray, and silver Goldendoodles. Apart from their chocolate-colored coats, they possess the same traits and features that characterize Goldendoodles. On average, a standard Goldendoodle is a medium-sized dog that typically grows about 23 to 29 inches in height and weighs 60 to 85 pounds. However, do not be surprised to find Toy, Miniature, and medium-sized Goldendoodles. Their size will depend on what Poodle size variation was used in the breeding process. Chocolate Goldendoodles may also feature a soft-textured coat that can either be curly, wavy, or straight. Furthermore, these dogs have slightly elongated, well-built, and muscular bodies. Its face is characterized by long eyebrows, mustaches, and proportionate muzzles. Its oval eyes often come in dark brown or blue. As with any other mixed-breed dog, the appearance of chocolate Goldendoodles can vary widely depending on which parent has more dominant genes. However, it is best to personally verify the Poodle size used in breeding. In simpler terms, it is impossible to produce a chocolate Goldendoodle by randomly mating a Golden Retriever and a chocolate-colored Poodle. This is because Golden Retrievers do not have the recessive brown gene. That said, to produce a chocolate or brown Goldendoodle, breeders need to mate chocolate Poodles with Goldendoodles carrying the chocolate gene. The problem, however, is that not every Goldendoodle has the said gene. The generation of the Goldendoodle matters a lot to breeders who want to end up with a chocolate Goldendoodle. Do Chocolate Goldendoodles Stay Brown? Chocolate Goldendoodles change their coat color as they grow older. Their coat color may fade to silvery beige or light brown. Do All Chocolate Goldendoodles Fade? Most, but not all, chocolate Goldendoodles fade to a light brown or silvery beige color as they mature. This is a very normal process that Goldendoodles of certain colors, such as chocolate and black, undergo. As previously mentioned, the color of chocolate Goldendoodles fades to a light brown, often a silvery beige, as they mature. Unfortunately, the genes for silvering have not yet been isolated, making it difficult to predict whether silvering will occur in your dog. There is currently no genetic testing available that can determine silvering in Goldendoodles. That is why you can expect no less from chocolate Goldendoodles. Chocolate Goldendoodles are friendly dogs. They love getting attention, which is why they love being around people. They do not shy away from strangers, making them not good as guard dogs. However friendly as these dogs may seem, brown Goldendoodles have favorites, just like their Poodle parents. They tend to cling to one person in the household. If you have kids at home, you should not worry about getting them along with your chocolate Goldendoodle, as they are very gentle and patient with kids. However, as always, it is best to supervise them. Likewise, this hybrid is also a great option if you have other animals living at home. The problem, however, is that chocolate Goldendoodles do not thrive when left alone for long periods. These dogs are so highly social that they are prone to developing separation anxiety when left alone. Given the right amount of attention, love, and care, a chocolate Goldendoodle will make a great addition to any family. These natural charmers will surely please you with their natural humor and wit. Chocolate Goldendoodle Lifespan and Health Issues The chocolate Goldendoodle is a generally healthy breed that lives between 10 and 15 years, given enough love, care, and a proper diet. However, since both its parents are predisposed to various health issues, chocolate Goldendoodles are also prone to developing or acquiring some of them. Here are some of the most common health problems seen in chocolate Goldendoodles: Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is common in both Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles, making chocolate Goldendoodles susceptible to the same problem. This health issue occurs when the hip joints fail to develop normally, resulting in the dislocation of the ball and socket. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : Although progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a non-painful condition, this inherited eye disease progresses slowly over time, eventually leading to complete blindness in dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure available for PRA, but most dogs adapt well to their vision loss and continue to have a good life, given proper care and support. It is caused by a lack of protein, which is required to assist platelets in forming clots to seal broken blood arteries. In affected dogs, uncontrolled bleeding may cause death. As always, it is important to have your chocolate Goldendoodle routinely examined by a qualified veterinarian. This is to ensure that your dog is in good condition and avoids serious health conditions. You should note, though, that the expenses do not end there. The initial costs of owning a brown Goldendoodle puppy are summarized in the table below: Type of Expense. Share 0 Shares In your search for the beautiful Goldendoodle breed, you probably must have stumbled upon the chocolate Goldendoodle. The Chocolate Goldendoodle gets its dark chocolate coat from the Poodle side of its gene pool which is the more dominant gene in the chocolate Goldendoodle designer dog. The chocolate coat is a popular choice amongst most Goldendoodle dog lovers and breeders strive to produce such beautiful dogs. This article reveals everything you need to know about the Chocolate colored Goldendoodle in order to help you make an informed decision when next you would be searching for the perfect Goldendoodle for you and your family. With that being said, please ensure you read on, to learn something new. What Makes the Goldendoodle Chocolate Chocolate Goldendoodle To get a Chocolate Colored Goldendoodle, you should ensure that one or both parent breeds being crossed should possess a chocolate coat. This is oftentimes the Poodle parent as the poodle comes in a wide variety of coat colors about 10 varieties. However, crossing a chocolate Poodle with a chocolate-colored Golden Retriever would also give you a chocolate Goldendoodle. In addition to the Poodle parent being chocolate in color, you have to ensure that its gene is the dominant gene in the Goldendoodle, this is why the generation of the Goldendoodle being bred matters. The dark chocolate coat color of the chocolate Goldendoodles is most likely to be accompanied by a silver coat color from birth till at least 2 years would have passed. For multigen Goldendoodles , you have to ensure that both Goldendoodles being used are Chocolate colored Goldendoodles. Using only one chocolate-coated Goldendoodle would not guarantee a beautiful Chocolate Goldendoodle. Are Chocolate Goldendoodles Rare? Chocolate Mini Goldendoodle Although both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle each possess chocolate coat variations, these coats are still recessive for both breeds, which is why the chocolate Goldendoodle is regarded as a rare hybrid. Finding a Chocolate coated Golden Retriever can be quite hard, and so is finding a Chocolate coated Poodle. However, a good breeder can work with just the Chocolate Colored Poodle and make sure it is the more dominant gene in the Goldendoodle. How to tell what kind of coat a Chocolate Goldendoodle coats In addition to your Goldendoodle producing a chocolate coat, it can also be quite challenging to figure out the exact kind of coat the Goldendoodle would produce. There is a great way to tell what coat color a Goldendoodle would end up with and that is through the nose or nostrils of the Goldendoodle puppy. Pay close attention to the coat color around the nose of the Goldendoodle, this would give you an insight into what the original color of the Goldendoodle would be. Chocolate Goldendoodle Coat Types There are 3 possible coat types your Goldendoodle would be most likely to end up with. These coat types might not be easily determined by looking at their coat type as puppies. It is random and can be subject to change at any time. However, the disadvantage to this coat type is that the puppy might not be hypoallergenic as Goldendoodles with straight coats are known to shed with ease and a lot. Curly Chocolate Coat Over time, people have sought Goldendoodles with the Curly coat more than Goldendoodles with the other 2 coat types. This is because the Curly Coat is easier to groom and take care of than the 1st Coat type of the Goldendoodle. This coat type gives the Goldendoodle a more poodle-like appearance and hence is less shedding than the straight coat type. Meaning your Goldendoodle would most likely be Hypoallergenic and great for dog lovers with dog hair allergies. But they would require more grooming than the other 2 coat types. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat Chocolate Goldendoodles with a shaggy or wavy coat type, are oftentimes the most common Goldendoodle types you would find. Their coats are mid-curly and are the easiest to groom. Still, regular grooming should be given to all Goldendoodles regardless of the Coat type. A minimum of one or two hours a week should be dedicated to grooming your favorite furry companion. It keeps them comfortable, happy, and healthy. As we have stated earlier, Goldendoodles are known to change color as they get mature. This is not the same for all Goldendoodles though. Some Goldendoodles might undergo minor coat color changes like developing a silvery shine to their Coat or maybe a more drastic color change from dark chocolate to a more light brown variation. This is a sign of maturity and should not be taken with much seriousness. If you are in dire need of ending up with a chocolate Goldendoodle, discuss with the reputable breeder to know how often their pups change color and also help in deciding what particular Goldendoodle is guaranteed to end up with the desired chocolate-colored coat variety. Image source: doodlecreek. One very common temperament of the Goldendoodle is its intelligence. This intelligence trait is gotten from the Poodle side of its gene pool as Poodles are widely known as intelligent dog breeds. The Goldendoodle is very easy to train and oftentimes well-behaved. They are energetic, but their high intelligence and proper training can make them an ideal dog companion to have in indoor living spaces that are small. If your Goldendoodle looks more like the Golden Retriever, it would be much needier than a Goldendoodle that looks more like a Poodle. In general, they are sweet and loving family pets and enjoy time around the family, playing games and being chased by the kids. They are terrible guard dogs, as they are most likely to alert you of any possible disturbance than confront it, so you can be sure they make good alert dogs. Also, they are quite friendly and open to new faces, especially when socialized early and properly. Chocolate Goldendoodle Appearance Chocolate Goldendoodle. Image source: RedRail Doodles Chocolate Goldendoodles look like regular Goldendoodles but with dark chocolate coat color. However, their Coat types do have a major impact on how the Goldendoodle looks. Depending on their Coat type, the Goldendoodle can either look like a Golden Retriever or look like a standard Poodle. If they possess a straight coat type, they look a lot more like the Golden Retriever and if they possess a wavy, shaggy, or curly coat type, they look a lot more like the Poodle Goldendoodle. Their Coat conformation makes them very adorable dogs with a teddy bear-like resemblance and are more loved by the women and your girls. Their hypoallergenic coat also makes them well sought after by people around the world. Chocolate Goldendoodle Size These beautiful angels come in 3 major size groups. Now all three sizes of the Goldendoodles are there to suit your various living conditions. Mini Chocolate Goldendoodle Mini Chocolate Goldendoodles can be further divided into two groups, the teacup Goldendoodles and the petite Goldendoodle. They weigh between 15 pounds to 30 pounds and have a maximum height of 13 inches to 17 inches. They are great apartment dogs and can live in small spaces. Medium Chocolate Goldendoodle Medium Chocolate Goldendoodles are quite common and are for families not in search of a large dog and also not in search of a small, tiny dog. Getting a Mediums Sized Goldendodole would mean getting a Goldendoodle that weighs between 40 to 60 pounds and can grow as tall as 17 to 20 inches. Standard Chocolate Goldendoodle Standard Chocolate Goldendoodles are loveable Goldendoodles that are best kept in a house with enough space to run and play. Their high intelligence and good housebreaking practice can make them suitable for apartments and smaller spaces too. They weigh between 50 to 80 pounds and can grow as tall as 20 inches to 24 inches in height. Chocolate Goldendoodle Generations There are multiple generations for breeding a healthy ChocolateGoldendoodle. However, here, we would look at a few generations of the total Goldendoodle generations and how to get a chocolate-coated Goldendoodle from these breeding generations. To get a chocolate-coated F1 Goldendoodle, you would need a chocolate-coated Poodle compulsory and a Golden Retriever of any color Chocolate Golden Retrievers would be excellent. F1B Chocolate Goldendoodle The F1B or First generation backcross Goldendoodle is an excellent generation that gives you a better chance of getting a Goldendoodle variation you prefer than an F1 generation Goldendoodle. This forces the Poodle gene to be more dominant than the Golden Retriever gene. F3 Chocolate Goldendoodle An F3 or multigene Goldendoodle brings with it, the highest possibility of ending up with the desired Goldendoodle variation. What are the Color Variations of Chocolate Goldendoodles? There are only two variations of coat color, the dark chocolate Color variation, which is the most common of the Chocolate Goldendoodle. It is partially regarded as an official poodle color by the AKC. For the 2nd Chocolate Goldendoodle color variation, we have the coffee brown coat color. This has a lighter shade of brown than the dark color variation for the Goldendoodle. It is quite beautiful and oftentimes comes with a shiny silvery glint on them. Chocolate Goldendoodle Lifespan How long your Chocolate Goldendoodle lives can be affected by many factors, proper breeding practices being one and health vigor being another. However, for the Chocolate Goldendoodle, you get an average lifespan that varies from 10 years to 15 years. When compared to the parents, we can wholeheartedly say, that the Chocolate Goldendoodle lives longer than the Golden Retriever and is about the same lifespan as that of the Poodle parent. In comparison to other Goldendoodle color variations, the Chocolate Goldendoodle shares pretty much the same lifespan as other color variations of the Goldendoodle. They all live for as long as 15 years on average which is quite good, as you get to enjoy the loveable company of your loveable furry friend for a much longer time period. However, you should note that the lifespan can be affected by health defects and genetic issues which would be discussed later in the article. Training the Chocolate Goldendoodle One of the best traits of the Goldendoodle, in general, is their high intelligence which helps make training the Goldendoodle a lot easier and enjoyable. The chocolate Goldendoodle is no exception as they are very intelligent and would adapt to being trained with much ease. When compared to the Golden Retriever and Poodle parents, the Goldendoodle inherits its high intelligence from the Poodle although, the Golden Retriever is also an intelligent dog breed. They are more likely to learn a trick faster than most dog breeds out there. The Chocolate Goldendoodle is eager and willing to learn new tricks, this makes them perfect dogs for show competitions as well as suitable dogs for therapy, service, and work dogs. As long as the Goldendoodle is trained early, it would pick up new tricks with relative ease. Every chocolate Goldendoodle breed is best trained using positive reinforcement. This ensures you make use of positive treats and non-strict corrections to keep the puppy motivated and well trained. Try as much as possible to not get frustrated while teaching your Goldendoodle new tricks, as this would do more harm than good. Common Chocolate Goldendoodle Health Problems Before getting a Chocolate Goldendoodle puppy, or any Goldendoodle puppy from a breeder, it is quite important that you ask or enquire from the Goldendoodle breeder about the breeding practice used or employed by the Goldendoodle, as even though the Goldendoodle has a higher tolerance to diseases and health defects than the Golden Retriever or Poodle parent, they still suffer from following conditions; 1. Hip Dysplasia The dysplasia of the hip or elbow is quite common with large dog breeds like the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. It occurs when there is an unusual displacement from the regular working of the ball and socket joint. It is a very painful condition that could limit or altogether stop the movement of the Goldendoodle. Goldendoodles with Hip dysplasia might require surgery if the condition gets too critical. Cataracts Also known as cloudy eyes, cataracts can be quite damaging for the Goldendoodle, in this case, the Goldendoodle would develop a white blur in his vision that could later grow to completely render the Goldendoodle blind. With Older Goldendoodles, the condition might go bad, as the condition can not be treated. However, younger Goldendoodles could later regain their sight when surgery has been done. Skin Sensitivity Over time, your Goldendoodle might develop skin issues that can result from poor grooming practices and improper health practices as well. These can lead to skin reactions, spots, and other blemishes that can leave the Goldendoodle uncomfortable and in pain. Because of their sensitive skin, it is required you observe regular Grooming for the Goldendoodle to keep them happy and playful. Arthritis Arthritis is quite rare for the Goldendoodle, but it does happen and can be very painful or life-threatening for the beautiful furry angel. A Goldendoodle that suffers from Arthritis would suffer from inflamed joints, which could lead to overall discomfort for the Goldendoodle puppy. Seizures Seizures or Epilepsy are quite common for the Goldendoodle. Also life-threatening, Goldendoodles inherit this terrible condition from both breeding parents of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. This condition could be avoided with proper breeding practices, this is why you should always deal with a reputable breeder. As it has already been stated, the Goldendoodle with a straight coat is prone to more shedding than a Goldendoodle with a curly or shaggy coat. However, all Goldendoodles are considered hypoallergenic, with low to no shedding coats. This, therefore, affects the required amount of grooming each chocolate Goldendoodle would require. For Goldendoodles with long straight coats, they would need to be groomed a minimum of 2 to 3 times a year. This would involve bathing and brushing the coat. For a Goldendoodle with a wavy or curly coat, 4 to 5 times a year of regular grooming would be required. This can be achieved with regular brushing, dental care, and also nail trimmings. Ask the right questions and demand the right certifications. Other Goldendoodle Colors. It is also know as "piebald" and is similar to the paint patterning seen in horses. If a merle dog is bred to another dog that carries a merle gene, puppies can be born either deaf or blind or both. A dog can carry the merle gene without looking merle, so it is imperative that genetic tests are performed. Merle patterning can only appear on black or chocolate-based dogs. A Cream or red dog can carry the gene, but the patterning will not be seen. We often refer to Classic Merle as "Cookies and Cream. Watercolor merle dogs are born a lighter version of their base color for example, a silver watercolor merle is born a dark grey and continue to lighten over their first two years. These puppies can also have some LIGHT merle-type patchwork patterning, enhancing the watercolor effect. This patterning may show up as early as 1 month of age or not show up until the puppy clears to its adult, lighter color. Watercolor merle produces colors previously unseen in Goldendoodles and is an incredibly striking color. Our stud, Knox, is the only Goldendoodle we know of the produces this color. Black dogs with Watercolor Merle will be born a dark grey color. Chocolate dogs with Watercolor Merle will be born a gold color. Since Knox only became a stud in late , we don't yet have photos of other adult dogs with this coloration, but so have some examples of how puppies have matured to date. Watercolor merle is also known as Maltese merle or atypical merle. Sable can appear on any base color. It appears seemingly out of nowhere and hasn't yet been associated with a particular gene. Seal only occurs on Black dogs. Questions about Goldendoodle puppies for sale? We have answers. What is a Goldendoodle, exactly? My love and passion for the Australian Labradoodle is not the result of an allergy issue. By chance I came into contact with this breed years ago. The Australian Labradoodle is a very people oriented dog. To give an example; I went with my puppy to puppy training and instead of playing with all the other puppies, my Labradoodle first went to greet the other dog owners. The other participants were amazed! My example above is one of the many examples I have of the Australian Labradoodles being a very intelligent, social and unique dog. These dogs have really stolen my heart. The Australian Labradoodle was originally ment to work as a therapy dog. For example making contact with autistic people, because they are so human-oriented and also seek eye contact. Because of their hypoallergenic coat they are a great alternative for people who are allergic to dogs. The Australian Labradoodle is a sensitive dog. Look in them in the eyes. That is why the Australian Labradoodle is not suitable for little companionship; they love good company around them. Attention, challenges like games and long walks are really necessary. They are certainly not kennel dogs. They need a loving home and lots of love from their owner s. If you think you can give your dog a loving home, lots of attention and exercise, than maybe the Australian Labradoodle is the perfect dog for you and your family. All Rights Reserved.

Friday, March 16, Puppy Surprise by Playskool I am going to veer away from my normal doll talk to share two things with you. First, an awesome toy called Puppy Surprise. Remember how I mentioned a while back about how much I like surprises? Well, this toy is perfect for me. It's perfect for a lot of kids in the year old range, too, in my experience. I think I have bought one of these for almost every kid I know in that age range. What is Puppy Surprise? It is a plush dog who is pregnant stuffed with removable puppies. The surprise is, you don't know how many puppies she has until you open the box and the dog. She could have anywhere from 2 to 4 puppies, and if she has 4, one of them is likely to be a runt. It's awesome. The puppies are also gendered, so you don't know if you're going to get boys or girls. In the early 90s, Hasbro made a similar toy, also called Puppy Surprise, but these dogs had vinyl faces. The older toys are also still available on eBay, but they tend to command higher prices, especially if the set is complete and in good shape. I like both versions, but slightly prefer the newer ones because they are all plush. A few years ago, when these started to go on clearance, I hoarded a ton of them so I could give them away as gifts. I have a few left over. Let's have some fun with them! Playskool Puppy Surprise discontinued. The dogs are about 9 inches tall and come in a fairly simple window box. The box emphasizes the surprise element, which works like a charm to get me to shell out my money: I hope it's 4! I need to know!! The box also gives you the exact odds of getting each number of puppies, which I think is very nice: 2 puppies: 1 out of every 4 boxes 3 puppies: 2 out of 4 boxes interesting 4 puppies 1 out of 4 boxes It also says that all twins are girls. The chances of having a boy are 1 in 6. Those are good odds for the fellas. Each mother dog has a pattern on her cheek called a "Pretty Patch. This way, if you have lots of these dogs, you can always reunite a mother with her original puppies by matching the patches. The gender of the puppies is indicated by the lining of their ears. If the lining is pink they're overheated girls, if it is blue, they're holding their breath boys. There are lots of different colors and styles of dog to choose from. I have seen purple poodles, pink poodles, black and white spotted dogs, pink and white spotted ones with fluffy ears, cream ones with fluffy ears, pure white ones, tan and pink ones.Playskool also made some different animals, like cats and rabbits. This one is a bit drab. She was on a massive clearance sale: You have to wrestle her out of three wire ties, and that's it. Let's get right to that part. The puppies are in the dog's belly, which opens and closes with velcro. It's nicely done and the dog has enough stuffing to be cuddly even without the puppies. Of course you can't tell how many puppies there are inside until you open her up. My kids and I used to hold every single box in the store and try to tell from the weight which ones had the most puppies. Here is the exciting moment! These dogs should come with a scalpel and sutures. It's a girl! She looks just like her mother: And it's.Who also looks just like her mother. Ah, well. These babies are essentially identical, but the way they are stuffed gives them very different personalities. The firstborn is very cute and normal and maybe a little shy-looking, and the second one has some serious attitude. She'd be telling dog jokes and running all over the place making trouble if she were real: Hey, hey! Did you hear the one about the chihuahuas and the light bulb? Ok, let's try again. I happen to have another one: This is my favorite out of all of the colors. She reminds me of my very first dog: She has a different Pretty Patch: Here we go! After a few confused seconds, the woman's partner repeats: "Shut up, are you taking the piss? How much was it? Are you taking the piss? Shut up no you didn't! After confirming how much it cost, the surprised partner then stands up only to have the woman put the small toy poodle puppy in his arms. Stock Image. During the peak of the first lockdown in May demand for pets soared by percent above levels in the UK. Getty Images According to the U. And a survey by Pets4Homes found that during the peak of the first lockdown in May , demand for pets soared by percent above levels. Demand for puppies rose by over percent, peaking at 60 million online searches in May alone. The top five breeds bought during lockdown, according to the survey, also included poodle crosses—with Cavapoo, which is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a p oodle , ranked at the top; followed by a Cockapoo , which is a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a poodle. According to Purely Pets , if you are considering owning a Cavapoo, you should "try to choose one that has been bred with a Miniature, rather than a Toy Poodle — the latter are more prone to hereditary health problems. In fact, this breed can suffer from serious health issues, so heavy vet bills can loom. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? We want to see the best ones! Send them in to life newsweek. Puppy Surprise What exactly about the birthing process do toy companies perceive to be so child-friendly? Aside from the fact that labor begets a child, that is. Children are both innocent and inquisitive, and parents have a hell of a time balancing those two conflicting natures without sadistic toy manufacturers coming in and mucking it up with biologically confusing playthings. In the late 80s and early 90s, Hasbro came up with a glorious marketing scheme guaranteed to disappoint one in five children. I'll tell you how. In a natural order-defying act of toy bizarreness, the good people of Hasbro developed a velcro-adhered pouch that children could simply open and close as they please. As you can imagine, this led to inevitable confusion about birthing. A whole slew of Puppy Surprise-toting kids spent years thinking that when you're done playing with a baby, you can simply shove it back into the womb. No problem here. The "surprise" element of Puppy Surprise referred to the fact that the doll could contain three, four, or five puppies. Kids are fairly simple creatures, and are thus easy to persuade that more equals better. In fact, every child was convinced that as special as he or she was, it was only fair that their doll contained the maximum of five puppies. You can bet parents had a swell old time consoling these children when their doll as most did contained a scant three puppies. Three puppies? Don't insult me, Hasbro. What can I do with three puppies? Five, now that's a fun toy. But three? Come on. Note that sped-up fine-print speech at the end: "Puppy Surprise comes with three, four, or five baby puppies! One in five Mommy dolls comes with four or five puppy dolls. They are, unfortunately, pretty adept at counting and thus are clearly aware when they are being cheated. I remember a birthday party at which one of my classmates received a pink Puppy Surprise with five puppies. How was I supposed to compete with that when my spotty mommy doll had been significantly less fertile? This was the precise moment in a child's life when they learn that life is not fair. Luckily for parents, they also learn greed, envy, anger, and all sorts of other fun hard-to-quell negative behaviors. Thanks, Hasbro! I implore you to check it out. Really, I'll wait. Fortunately, if you struck out the first time, there were approximately one million alternative variations you could subsequently beg for to try your luck of the litter again. All dolls in the Surprise line had similar by-the-books adorableness achieved by the winning combination of hard plastic faces and soft, pliable bodies. The box assures us that each of our babies, just like us, are unique. Unlike us, their uniqueness is broadcast by a ribbon round the neck declaring the puppy to be of the male or female persuasion. Conveniently, in Hasbro world all of these animals and their corresponding offspring were roughly the same size. Lucky for us, the fun didn't stop there! As the ever-competitive toy market necessitates, Hasbro had to milk this concept until the Mommy Surprise ran dry. Let's investigate some of the odder exploits Hasbro undertook in order to continually surprise us: Drink n' Surprise. To those of us now immersed in semi-adulthood, this sounds like a typical weekend. Back in the early 90s, however, you would have been far happier to wake up to this surprise the next morning. In this case, if you shoved a tiny bottle of water down your puppy's throat, you could be rewarded with a variable physical reaction. As the tag-line said, "Will your puppy drink n' wet or drink n' burp? Surprise Outfit These lucky pups came complete with a mysterious box that could contain any type of outfit. Just imagine! Sure, you only had three puppies to speak of, but that one comes dressed as a mermaid. Makes up for it, right? Playful Hair Surprise In essence, you yanked on the little guys' till their hair was visible, with blue hair indicating a male and pink a female. The hair could also be re-retracted yep, two re-s into the body. That certainly is.There were oodles more there those came from, but they all generally shared the same ridiculous elements of Surprise. There was always some element of unexpectedness that lent some excitement to the toy opening process. After that moment had passed, however, the doll lost quite a bit of its luster. Unsurprisingly, Hasbro began releasing "sold separately" packs of babies for reasons we can only assume are related to the continuous bitching from the four in five kids whose dolls contained just three babies. Though children delighted in this manner of cheating the system, there was a fatal flaw in the system. The velcro-pouch wombs were just big enough to accommodate innumerable additions to the additional litter. At least it gave us an easily identifiable means of judging whose parents were child-spoiling suckers: the ones whose Puppy Surprise dolls' painfully bulging bellies dragged on the floor. Served them right. I was stuck with three puppies, none of whom had retractable hair or a mermaid costume. The only thing to console me? My Mommy Doll got to keep her svelte pre-litter figure. In your face, kids whose parents buy supplemental toys to appease their obnoxious children. In your face! Posted by Children of the 90s at AM.

older labradoodle puppies for sale - Pointerdor owners say these sturdy dogs are softies at heart and love to please their people. Bred from Labrador Retrievers and German Shorthaired Pointers, these puppies are one of the most sought-after breed mixes. Their history goes back long before the term designer dog was coined. Lab Pointer mix origins — why breed a hybrid? Using two dog breeds from the same group, in this case the sporting group, does however increase the chances that the resulting puppies will be similar, because the parents have similarities too. It is interesting to note that Lab Pointer mix origins, go back much further than the desire for designer puppies. Basically the Labrador Pointer crossbreed is nothing new and has been around as a capable hunting companion and all round family pet for many years. Part of the sporting dog group, and many serve dual roles as hunting companions and family pets. They are modern, multi-purpose, gun dogs capable of hunting up game, pointing at it, and retrieving it. These breeds are both athletic working dogs that need plenty of exercise, are very playful, and get bored quite easily. For this reason a German Shorthaired Pointer and Lab mix can be a good choice for an active household that can make plenty of time for play and who are willing to devote time each day to training their dog. These are loyal, intelligent dogs who can be independently-minded, but are very amenable to training. They form strong bonds with their owners. They do best in a stimulating environment — one that challenges them both mentally and physically. Their offspring typically weigh anywhere between 50 and 85lbs, with males being larger than females. And cross-bred puppies are likely to grow to a height of around 23 inches at the shoulder a little less for females Shedding When it comes to coat length and texture things are a bit more predictable with a GSP cross as both Labs and German Shorthaired Pointers have short fur. Labradors can be heavy shedders due to their double coat. The GSP coat is very short and easy to care for. Mix pups do not shed like a lab and their coats are often sleek and shiny. Exercise Coming from two working breeds, Lab Pointers have a lot of energy. They love being outdoors and are ready for anything — running, swimming or hiking. These pups should also have an enclosed yard where they can run around and stretch their legs on a daily basis. They can become destructive, burning off their excess energy by chewing. Exercise is also an important way to keep these high-spirited dogs healthy, and stop them from becoming overweight which could lead to health problems down the road. Health Any puppy has the potential to inherit health problems carried by its parents. Different breeds are often prone to different diseases, and this means that some cross bred puppies have an advantage in terms of health. One of the advantages of buying a cross breed puppy is that the known reduced health risks are reflected in lower pet insurance premiums. Lab Pointer Puppies Video History Though not much is known about its origination, this new breed has obtained recognition by the American Canine Hybrid Club as well as a few other clubs that recognize designer breeds. Temperament These energetic, sweet-tempered dogs have a pleasant and courteous disposition. Being fond of playing, they can get highly possessive as far as their toys are concerned. Though gentle and loving, they have an independent nature, not requiring too much attention, unlike other breeds. Moreover, separation from their owners for some time will not have a great impact on them. Having a loyal nature, they are extremely devoted to their masters, trying all means to please them. The Lab-Pointer behaves calmly with other canine breeds, also being friendly with children provided they are not rough with it. Another interesting trait this breed has inherited from the Pointer is its brilliant sense of smell that makes it alert on sniffing something unusual or encountering any unfamiliar face. Care Exercise It is essential to make them exercise regularly to maintain a good physical and mental health. To channelize its high energy levels in a positive way, owners should take their pets out on a walk two times in a day or make them run daily. Lab-Pointer puppies are more active compared to the older dogs as the latter tend to calm down with age, preferring to be indoors. Grooming Requiring less grooming, their short or medium-length coat should be brushed once or twice a week to keep off dead hairs. Bathe the dog when dirty to prevent them from getting too smelly. Cleaning their ears will minimize chances of infection. Health Problems This hardy breed has no known health problems as such. However, it might be prone to certain common ailments suffered by its parents like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataract, cherry eyes and allergies of Pointer as well as dysplasia, luxating patella, hereditary myopathy and deafness of Labrador. It may even suffer from some of the common dog diseases. Training The English pointer-lab mix is convenient to train though it sometimes becomes a mammoth task to obtain their attention. Therefore, they need a firm and tactful trainer who will handle them in a patient, thoughtful and gentle way, tempting them to follow his commands through rewards and incentives. Socialization and obedience training are also to be imparted to help them come out of their timid nature and mingle well with strangers, children as well as other pets. If kept as only pets and not for hunting then owners should make a conscious effort to keep their chasing instinct under control. Feeding Give your dog between 1. Moreover, they should also be provided a nutritious diet to meet their protein and mineral requirement. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Created by crossing the Labrador and pointer breeds, the Lab pointer mix is one of the latest designer dog breeds. Smart, devoted, and full of energy, these doggos inherited some of the best traits of their parent breeds. Other than that, they are easy to train, relatively low-maintenance dogs, which makes them a good option for newbie dog parents. As the name hints, the pointer Lab mix is a mixed-breed dog developed by crossing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred pointer. However, they are recognized by the following organizations: American Canine Hybrid Club Dog Registry of America, Inc Lab Pointer Mix Appearance While there is no way of predicting the exact appearance of any mixed breed, the typical Pointerdor will inherit certain traits from both its parent breeds. Having said that, Lab pointers are typically medium-sized dogs with long and muscular bodies. This mix has a deep chest, a powerful stance, and long, strong legs made for running. They have broad heads, medium-length muzzles, and wide, floppy ears that hang down to the upper jaw. Their almond-shaped eyes are usually brown, but they can also come in a lighter color. Size Since the Lab pointer is a new designer breed, there are no set standards when it comes to size. As a cross between a pointer and a Labrador retriever, you can expect this mix to be a medium-sized dog. Pointerdors are usually from 22 to 28 inches tall at the withers and can weigh anywhere from 35 to 80 pounds. Coat Color This mix can inherit the coat color from either of its parent breeds or sport a mix of colors. Since both pointers and Labs come in a variety of different colors, there are many color possibilities for their mixed-breed offspring. In most cases, though, the average Lab pointer mix is either white, brown, or black in color. Coat Texture The Lab pointer has a short, dense, and waterproof double coat that is relatively easy to maintain. As a double-coated breed, these dogs tend to shed moderately all year round and go through a heavier shed during spring and fall. If you or any of your family members are allergic to dogs, research the so-called hypoallergenic breeds and low-shedding dogs like the labradoodle , as they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction in allergy sufferers. Luckily, in this case, both the pointer and the Lab are members of the sporting dog group and share certain character traits. There are two sides to every pointer Lab — a devoted family companion and an athletic gundog. The loving and friendly Pointerdor forms strong bonds with its family and likes to be involved in all family activities. They are best suited for large and bustling families that will include their dog in all indoor and outdoor activities. As an offspring of two sporting breeds, the pointer Labrador retriever mix is a highly athletic and energetic dog that needs plenty of space to roam around and explore. If not allowed adequate space to run and play, this mix will quickly become bored, frustrated, and destructively chew everything in sight, beginning with your shoes and progressing to furniture and other belongings. These friendly and sweet-tempered dogs get along with everyone, including children of all ages. Not only are these pooches gentle and patient with kids, but they also love to play and will quickly become best friends with any child capable of matching their energy levels. Activity Level As an offspring of two sporting dog breeds, the Lab pointer mix is a very athletic and energetic dog that needs a lot of activity, more specifically at least 1 to 2 hours each day. When not provided with the intense exercise it needs, this mix will soon become restless and destructive. Caring For A Pointerdor Like any other dog, a pointer Labrador mix will thrive and stay happy when properly taken care of from a young age. To keep your dog happy and healthy, be sure to come up with a consistent care routine as soon as you bring them home and stick to it for the rest of their life. Exercise As mentioned before, Lab pointers are very athletic and energetic dogs that need a lot of exercise to stay physically and mentally stimulated. Ideally, this mix needs up to two hours of intense activity every day to release all their pent-up energy and stay in excellent shape. Activities such as running, jogging, swimming, agility exercises, and games like fetch are all good ways to keep your dog exercised. Intellectual Stimulation Lab pointers are intelligent dogs that can easily become bored and frustrated if not exercised or mentally stimulated every single day. Like their Labrador parents, these dogs tend to be mouthy and will chew everything they can sink their teeth in when bored and under-stimulated. To avoid getting your belongings chewed, invest in tough and durable chew toys , and keep your mix stimulated with interactive and puzzle toys. Companionship Loving and loyal, Lab pointers form strong bonds with their owners and make affectionate family companions. They like to spend time interacting with their people and are the happiest when they are involved in all family activities. Grooming Despite being moderate-to-heavy shedders, Pointerdors are fairly easy to groom. Their short double coats have to be brushed two or three times a week to remove loose hair and dirt. Bathe your mix once every two to three months or every time they return dirty from an outdoor adventure. Check their ears for waxy buildup and dirt once a week, and clean them as necessary to prevent painful ear infections. Diet An ideal diet for a pointer Lab mix should be formulated for a medium-sized dog with high energy. Their food needs to have high levels of protein, fat, and carbs, combined with all the essential vitamins and minerals your dog needs to stay healthy. To prevent obesity and all health problems associated with it, avoid free-feeding your dog and stick to a regular and consistent meal schedule. Known Health Problems Pointer Lab mixes are generally healthy, but they can be affected by the same health problems that are often seen in their parent breeds. The most common health issues they experience are: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They are not purebreds like their Labrador Retriever or Pointer parents. The most common colors of coat for a Lab Pointer are creamy white, brown, and black. Exercise and outdoor time is vital to the Lab Pointer. Lab Pointers can have a higher than usual prey drive, so make sure not to leave them unsupervised. Lab Pointer dogs and children get on great together. They will form strong bonds and become playmates, but early training and socialization is very important. Lab Pointer History The Lab Pointer is one of the newest mixed dog breeds around, with most estimates saying it came on the scene some time in the last decade. These days, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the United States. The Pointer hails from England, where they were bred for tracking and pointing purposes. The Lab Pointer has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Although, as is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 35 to 80 pounds and range in height from 22 to 28 inches. The mixed breed likes to be around humans and will want to take part in most of your daily activities. To that end, the dog does not do well left alone for long periods of time. So if you have a large and busy family, the Lab Pointer will fit in well with your schedule. Although, be warned. In general, Lab Pointers are loyal but not especially suited to being guard dogs. If you have kids, all the better. Lab Pointer Health Lab Pointers are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Labrador Retriever and Pointer face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. The Lab Pointer needs a very high amount of exercise. If you come across water on your hike, the breed will love to go swimming. Weekly teeth brushing sessions should be implemented with a Lab Pointer. Your vet can help advise you about which brand of toothpaste is appropriate for your dog. Bathing your Lab Pointer only needs to be done if it comes back in a dirty state after an outdoor adventure. They should not be clicking loudly against the floor. Make sure to check their ears for debris and pests, especially after spending time outdoors, and clean their ears regularly. Your vet can give you advice on how to do this at home. Lab Pointer Feeding An ideal Lab Pointer diet should be formulated for a medium-sized breed with high energy. In general, the Lab Pointer is an adaptable dog when it comes to climate. Just make sure to provide a suitable dog coat if the weather gets too frosty and your canine seems cold. Also, during hotter months, make sure shade and fresh water are always available during the outdoor sessions the mixed breed loves so much. Luckily, the Lab Pointer is a mixed breed that is relatively easy to train. Even with a well-trained dog, you should always supervise play time between kids and dogs so that neither party accidentally harms the other. Make sure to properly introduce your Lab Pointer to any other pets and set boundaries right from the start. Ultimately, early socialization really pays off with this mixed breed. Make sure to reward your Lab Pointer for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regimen when you bring them home to your family. Lab Pointer Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Lab Pointers because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Pointer breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Lab Pointer mix puppies Thanks to their spirited nature, Lab Pointer mix dogs need a lot of exercise, and space. A big back yard is best — somewhere fenced in where they can run and explore. Alert and intelligent, the gun dog breeds and breed mixes are usually a joy to train. Part of the sporting dog group, and many serve dual roles as working companions and family pets. Often with a second dog backing the first in an identical position. Setters and Pointers perform the same function and were very popular before breech loading guns were invented. They gave the hunter a chance to load their weapon and get close enough to the game to take a shot, before the bird was flushed. These dogs were bred to gallop over huge areas of moorland and open countryside, searching for tiny traces of scent in areas where game birds are few and far between. This required a big powerful deep chested dog capable of quartering large areas independently, with a hunter following — on foot or on horseback These are the true Pointers — sometimes called English Pointers. However, what many people mean when they talk about Pointers is a very different dog. They are modern, multi-purpose, gun dogs capable of hunting up game, pointing at it, and retrieving it. And for the most part, that is a good thing! These breeds are both are athletic working dogs that need plenty of exercise, are very playful, and get bored quite easily For this reason a German Shorthaired Pointer and Lab mix can be a good choice for an active household that can make plenty of time for play. And who are willing to devote time each day to training their dog. Lab Pointer mix origins — why create a hybrid? To understand the origins of a Lab x Pointer mix, we can begin by going back a few decades. The early crosses were often promoted as having the best attributes of both parents. Claims were made that Labradoodles for example would all be hypoallergenic or at least low shedding like their poodle parent. When we cross two very different dog breeds, which attributes each puppy will get from each parent is to some extent a lottery. The puppy could get the best attributes of both parents, or the worst. Using two dog breeds from the same group, in this case the sporting group, does however increase the chances that the resulting puppies will be similar, because the parents have similarities too. It is interesting to note that Lab Pointer mix origins, go back much further than the desire for designer puppies. HPRs have probably long been included in the occasional Labrador breeding programme, albeit illicitly, in order to incorporate the pointing instinct into certain lines of retrievers. Basically the Labrador Pointer crossbreed is nothing new. And has been around as a capable hunting companion and all round family pet for many years Lab Pointer mix size Both Labs and German Shorthaired Pointers are among the larger of the medium-sized dogs. Their offspring typically weigh anywhere between 50 and 85lbs, with males being larger than females. And cross-bred puppies are likely to grow to a height of around 23 inches at the shoulder a little less for females A Lab crossed with a true Pointer however, is likely to be a taller dog altogether. The true Pointer reaches up to 28 inches in height, and some of his cross-bred puppies may well do the same. Labrador Pointer mix colors There are just three coat colors for Labrador Retrievers — black, yellow and chocolate. Pointers, on the other hand, can be found in 8 different colors. Including liver, lemon, black or orange. And in combinations of these colors with white. They often have distinctive and beautiful markings with usually a white muzzle with dark ears and eyes. German Pointers come in all kinds of pretty variations of the color liver a rich dark brown either solid or mixed with white spots or ticking. In the UK, the GSP is also found in all those variations but with a black base color rather than liver. Within any hybrid litter, you can expect a lot of variation. A German Shorthaired Pointer black Lab mix might not necessarily be black. If it favors its Pointer parent, it could be a mix of colors. Even experienced breeders sometimes have a hard time predicting what their new Pointer Labrador pups will look like! Labrador Pointer cross shedding When it comes to coat length and texture things are a bit more predicable with a GSP or Pointer cross as both Labs, Pointers, and German Shorthaired Pointers have short fur. Labradors can be heavy shedders due to their double coat, The GSP and Pointer coat is very short and easy to care for. Mix pups may take after either. The German Wirehaired Pointer has a broken or rough coat which is low maintenance A quick once over with a body brush two or three times a week, and the use of a de-shedding tool when necessary should be sufficient to cover the grooming needs of your Lab Pointer Mix pup. Lab Pointer mix temperament There are two sides to a Labrador x Pointer mix. The sweet-natured family pet, versus the energetic working gun dog. These are loyal, intelligent dogs who can be independently-minded, but are very amenable to training. They form strong bonds with their owners, so can be prone to separation anxiety. And they do best in a stimulating environment — one that challenges them both mentally and physically. While it might seem like this headstrong mutt needs a lot of exercise and attention, just like either of their parent breeds, they will repay you over and over with their affectionate, loving nature. It is worth noting that the pointing breeds, which traditionally had to work much more independently and over greater distances than the retriever breeds, tend to be more independent in nature. Labrador versus Pointer temperament The Labrador Retriever is one of the most co-operative dog breeds on the planet. That is why they are so widely used as service and therapy dogs. When you mix a Labrador with a German Short Haired Pointer, you are likely to lose some of this intense desire to co-operate with people, that is the hallmark of the Lab. You may gain some pointing skills, and you may have a dog with better genetic health. But that pure Lab temperament is hard to beat from a training point of view. When you mix a Labrador with a true Pointer, the resulting puppies can be very different indeed in temperament from a Retriever puppy The Pointer is a more independent and less biddable dog that the Labrador. So its important to take this into account Labrador Pointer exercise Coming from two working breeds, Lab Pointer mixes have a lot of energy. They love being outdoors and are ready for anything — running, swimming or hiking. A Labrador or GSP needs at least an hour and a half walking each day. A true Pointer needs far more and many are ideally suited to being exercised on horseback. These pups should also have an enclosed yard where they can run around and stretch their legs on a daily basis. They can become destructive, burning off their excess energy by chewing. Exercise is also an important way to keep these high-spirited mutts healthy, and stop them from becoming overweight which could lead to health problems down the road. Lab and Pointer mix health Any puppy has the potential to inherit health problems carried by its parents. Different breeds are often prone to different diseases, and this means that some cross bred puppies have an advantage in terms of health. When it comes to Lab Pointers, the ones to watch out for are elbow and hip dysplasia, epilepsy and progressive retinal atrophy PRA. It can affect both Labs and Pointers. Labs and Pointers are also prone to the degenerative eye disorder, PRA. However, this disease, like many others can be screened for and eliminated from the gene pool. They should screen for diseases such as PRA as standard. They can also carry a genetic form of hemophilia known as von Willebrands Disease which prevents blood from clotting. Again, these are diseases that your breeder should screen for with every litter. What next? Sadly the growing popularity of hybrid dogs has led a lot of unscrupulous dog breeders to enter the market.
