Originally the kennel was started by June and Norm MacLeod. June started with her first Golden Retriever in .Her first dog was a male named "Reid's Goldrange Blonde Bomber" who did well in the show and obedience rings. His stud fees helped to pay for her years at University. After graduation June and Norm welcomed several Goldens Retrievers and four children into their home. As breeders of Golden Retrievers in Ontario under this kennel name since and with registered puppies under this name since , in June and Norm MacLeod decided it was time to pass the reins to their daughter Holly MacLeod. Together with her husband and two children they are now carrying on the lines and legacy of Setherwood Golden Retrievers. Holly was born into a house of Golden Retrievers and has over 40 years of experience in her own right. Norm and June continue to be involved in the breeding, selection and in sharing years of wisdom as Setherwood now carries on as second generation family passion, and with an ongoing legacy of beautiful, healthy, Golden Retrievers. Silver beige White Apricot - This and red were two of the last colors recorded for this breed; so they are the newest and quite interesting. An apricot can produce a red. Some apricot Poodles are so light that they appear to be cream, however you will notice a red tint to the hair. A true apricot poodle will have some points or black spots on their skin. Liver points are acceptable but not preferred in the U. All blue Poodles are born black and then "clear" lighten as the pup grows. This often happens within the first year but this change can take place as late as 2 years in some cases. For this reason, many blue Poodles are registered as black. The outer coat of a blue poodle is usually as dark as that of a black, but hairs at the root is a mix of colors. The amount of each color depends on the age of the dog. In middle-aged dogs, medium brown predominates. True blue Poodles will have black points and dark brown eyes. Brown - A brown Poodle is a deep, dark color and in no way can be confused with Cafe Au lait which is much lighter. Pure brown Poodles must have liver points and dark amber eyes. Brown is created by the bb gene, as opposed to the BB gene of black Poodles, and therefore will have no black pigment anywhere on the body, including the eyes and nose. Cafe Au lait - This is a shiny light tan color and some confused this with silver beige. It is not uncommon for the pup to be born brown and 'clear' to this color. A Cafe Au lait should have liver points and dark amber eyes. Black - A true black Poodle is a deep ink black. The dog's coat will have zero blue or silver tinting and not have any white or silver guard hairs. The face when shaved will be deep black, as well. A true black will not "clear" or "fade". Blacks will have black points and dark brown eyes. See More: Black Poodles. Silver Beige - This is a diluted brown, therefore a true silver beige Poodle is born brown. By 6 weeks, silver beige will appear on the face and paws with a full coat change by the age of 2 years. The dog will have liver points and dark amber eyes. Red - This only became an official color in and now many breeders in Canada have come together to form the Apricot Red Poodle Club. A true red will have black points. Read about the fascinating history of reds here: Red Poodles. Silver - A true silver Poodle is born black and "clears" by the age of 2. However, you will know a true silver by the age of 6 weeks, when the face and paws "clear" and the rest of the coat will follow in suit over the next year or two. Silvers will have black points and dark brown eyes. This color is a diluted gray, caused by the silver allele V gene. White - Most white Poodles are a pure, snow white. However, some breeders will dub a white tinted with apricot or beige as being white. A bit of black spotting is acceptable on a white, however there should never be any ticking in the white. The ticking gene is a totally separate gene that makes the coat appear dirty. Gray - While a Poodle can be born gray and stay gray, it is also not uncommon for a black Poodle to turn gray at the age of years old. Cream - These Poodles will have black points; you'll know that a Poodle is cream and not Silver Beige or Cafe au Lait if his nose is black. It is the Cch gene which causes an otherwise brown Poodle to be cream. Color Changes When a Poodle puppy is a solid, one must understand that many variables can affect what will become the adult coat. When a pup keeps the same color coat, this is known as "holding". However, many Poodles 'clear'. To clear means when the coat fades or lightens to another color. A lightening of the coat does not necessarily occur evenly all over the coat, rather Poodle color will often hold more on the dog's ears and the thicker guard hairs. Cafe Au lait Poodles are born dark brown and change to cafe around the age of 2 yrs Blue Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Sliver Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Apricots are often born a dark shade that lightens by the age of 2 years Many owners can become confused as their Poodle takes on a completely different color as they grow. For example, a blue Poodle puppy could be misinterpreted as black, although a reputable breeder should be able to know the difference. If that puppy has parents with parti in the bloodline, as the coat clears during the first 2 years, other colors may appear and the once black looking puppy who was actually a blue parti becomes a parti with a wide array of possible colors. Fixing a Dull or Yellowing Coat It is common for a Poodle's coat to dull, become brassy or yellow as the dog matures. Sunlight, air pollution and constant bombardment of minuscule debris are at work here, in addition to the natural aging process cycling out a duller color than a Poodle once had. At all times, each hair strand is in 1 of the 3 phases: Growth, rest or release. Therefore, it is a gradual process.Owners may not notice a difference in the richness, depth and shine of the coat until the process has been going on for a while and enough hairs have grown in faded or dulled to make a drastic difference. The key to fixing and maintaining a beautiful color on a Poodle is to use a color enhancing shampoo. There are some great ones manufactured specifically for canines. In addition, while in general one does not want to use a human product on a puppy or dog, as long as the PH balance is correct, it most certainly can be used with excellent results. When a black, blue, or brown dog has the mutation in this gene, they gradually fade in color as they grow. Not all black, blue, or brown poodles have the mutation, but some do. You will begin to see the change in color starting at a months of age and it is usually complete by the time the dog is mature. In some dogs there may be small changes throughout the life of the dog. Skin Color Skin color can change as well. The most common reason for a Poodle to have a change of color on the skin is exposure to sunlight and this most commonly happens on the belly. It is not uncommon for a pink belly to have darker spots appear. An owner should be concerned if those darker spots are raised above the skin and should have the dog's veterinarian take a look at any raised, dark areas. Phantom Poodles Overview While it is the solid Poodle that is the most common, there is much to discuss regarding Phantom Poodle coloring pronounced fantom , which is different than mismarks, the Tuxedo and partis. Let's take a closer look into the world of Poodle colors to help explain what these colors are and why they exist. What Phantom Coloring Means A phantom Poodle is not a different breed or type of dog, this is simply a term to describe a particular coloring of the dog. This type of coloring, while extremely beautiful and preferred by many Poodle owners, is not yet accepted by the AKC in regard to conformation. This is much different than parti colored Poodles, even though both parti and phantoms have a mixture of 2 colors. This term only refers to Poodles that have specific markings on a solid background. Many refer to these markings as Dobie markings short for Doberman , however this pattern also appears on Dachshunds, certain Spaniels, Yorkies, Manchester Terriers and certain Coonhounds. These markings must be: Above each eye On the sides of the muzzle also referred to as the side of the cheeks Across the dog's chest Down the legs Under the tail All phantom Poodles are born with their markings. This does not occur as the dog ages. Phantoms are genetically linked to brindle Poodles. For this reason, a phantom Poodle dam or sire can produce a litter of brindle puppies and likewise a brindle Poodle dam or sire can produce a litter of phantom puppies. With most dog breeds, brindle is a term that means the coat that is striped, with intermingling dark and light hairs making a striping pattern. However, with Poodles, brindle means "sable". Sable is a term that means that the coat is one color yet the tips of the hairs are black. With most dogs, the sabling black tips fade out or completely disappear with age. Attribution: By V. Flying Spark at de. Whenever an apricot Poodle puppy was born, the German Poodle Club did not allow that pup to bred. These rules caused too much inline breeding to be done. Inline breeding is the pairing of dogs who are very closely related, such as father to daughter and is considered unethical by most reputable breeders in the U. The inline breeding caused bloodlines to develop too long of a lower jaw, overbites, incorrect number of teeth, and premature color fading. This is slowly, yet steadily, decreasing the above stated flaws. Care Phantom Poodles, just like any other double colored Poodle including tuxedos or partis, are defined by coat color only. There are no differences in regard to vulnerabilities to health issues and they do not require any different sort of grooming or care that differs from a solid Poodle. In addition, there are no behavioral or temperament differences with Phantoms. Where color lands on the coat is simply a matter of genomes and does not affect the personality of the dog. Silver Temperament Poodles are, by and large, intelligent and elegant dogs. Athletic and easy to train, all sizes of Poodle excel at obedience, agility, and tracking events. Despite their aristocratic appearance, Poodles are energetic, fun-loving animals who thrive on exercise and attention. Unfortunately, as breeders attempt to fulfill the demand by breeding for specific colors or characteristics, so they have turned to inbreeding methods to produce these. This has resulted in a higher level of inbreeding that is desirable or sustainable. Like all Poodles, proper coat care is extremely important to prevent mats, dreadlocks, hot spots and skin infections. You should bathe your Phantom Poodle every month with a shampoo made specifically for Poodle s and brush him daily. If you cannot manage the longer coat, keep him in a short cut. Proper nutrition is very important. Feed your Poodle a high-quality dry, wet or raw food. It is because of these origins that the Poodle gained its remarkable hairstyles. Even the classic Poodle topknot with its colorful bow comes from its sporting heritage. It is said to have been used to identify and locate the dog when working in the water. As it was introduced to other parts of Europe, like France and England, the Poodle was given a new role — that of truffle hunter. Working alongside a Dachshund, the Poodle would seek out the valuable truffles that the Dachshund would then expertly evacuate. Images from the 15th and 16th centuries show Parti Poodles in all their original glory, but few depict the Phantom Poodle. Probably because the phantom pattern is a recessive trait that can remain hidden for several generations. This is the collection of genes that allows colors other than black to manifest themselves. Expert breeders have also noticed a correlation between specific colors and the Phantom Poodle appearance, with red, white, and silver Poodles more likely to develop the Phantom patterning than the black or brown. Finding your puppy The first step is tracking down a reputable breeder that has Phantom Poodle puppies available. This could take months, if not years, due to the relative scarcity of the pattern and the high demand. How Much is a Phantom Poodle Puppy? You might think that, as the American Kennel Club will not accept Phantom Poodles in the Conformation Ring, these dogs will be cheaper than their solid-colored siblings. Phantom Poodles can be expected to live as long as any other type of Poodle although, it should be noted that Standard Poodles have a slightly shorter life expectancy than either the Toy or Miniature versions. While a Toy Phantom Poodle has an average life of around .Are Phantom Poodles Difficult to Train? Like their solid-colored cousins, Phantom Poodles are eager to please and highly intelligent. This makes them keen students, although their instincts may sometimes get in the way. Having been bred as hunting dogs, Poodles have a naturally high prey drive and awareness of their environment, which means they need lots of stimulation and exercise. Poodles are people-oriented dogs and, without enough human company, can develop unwanted and destructive behaviors. Early puppy training and regular exercise, along with stimulating games and proper socialization can help your Phantom Poodle adjust more readily to his environment and become a loyal and content companion. Can You Show Phantom Poodles? With the same friendly temperament and life expectancy as any other Poodle, the Phantom Poodle will slip into family life with comparative ease. Design: Liked the theme and the toys were definitely durable. Health: Treats were made in the U. I mean, I love celebrating Halloween early as much as the next person, but in March? Mostly I was just weirded out by feeling like I'd been sent a Halloween box in March? Happy early Halloween, y'all! But in addition to that, everything in the box felt extremely high quality. Design: Both dog toys here felt very high-end and durable. Neither one was hideous, and I liked that there was a subtle St. I also loved that the rope toy is created through Fundacion Mitz which gives jobs to women in vulnerable communities. Health: I appreciated that the Loving Pets treats were made in the U. Customer Experience: I canceled my subscription via email, and it was easy. The customer service representative was pleasant and I liked that I got an email warning me that my subscription was renewing before I was out of the cancellation window. Summary: I was skeptical of this box going in because subscribing on the Greater Good site felt a little jenky, but I was actually really wow-ed by the quality of the items in the box and the value. I loved the products, and loved even more knowing that my purchase was feeding shelter animals. And our pick for the best Dog subscription box is… Okay, I lied. I love that it gives back, and everything in it felt really high-quality and thoughtfully-curated. I loved seeing a Fair Trade toy in the box, too. It felt good to buy an indulgent treat for our pups that also helped pups in need. Thanks for reading! It can all be pretty discouraging, especially when you know you could be helping more dogs if you could just get more clients. Inside vs. Not only are these approaches largely ineffective, they require dog pros to step too far outside their natural comfort and skill zones. One outside-the-box marketing concept we teach dogbiz clients and dogbiz University students is community education marketing. This approach involves sharing your professional knowledge as a way of helping dogs and their people while raising awareness of your services. It pulls marketing in line with your primary mission, making it a worthwhile endeavor instead of a distasteful one. Another tenant of our marketing philosophy is doing for others instead of asking for ourselves. Good, active referral sources are a key to success as a dog trainer, dog walker, daycare operator, or the like. But referral relationships are challenging to begin. But it always feels good to do something for others—and doing so forms a much more solid relationship foundation. Why market outside the box? Here are our four favorite reasons to teach our clients and students to think outside the marketing box: Stand out. In a sea of business cards and brochures and informational fliers, good content really stands out. It shows off your expertise and professionalism instead of talking about it. And it gives people a more compelling reason to both pick up and hang on to your materials. Take the pressure off. When you change your angle to thinking about how you can serve your community and potential referral sources, marketing becomes about fulfilling your mission rather than self-promotion. Make more difference. Sharing what you know gives you a chance for broader impact. You can only train or walk so many dogs and not all guardians will hire a care provider. But when you use your marketing for community education, you expose many more people to concepts with the potential to improve their understanding of and relationship with their dogs. Get more clients. Community marketing is powerful. Sharing your expertise builds trust and brand loyalty and a much deeper awareness than traditional marketing in our industry. Dog lovers exposed to your knowledge and professionalism through your marketing efforts are far more likely to reach out to you when the need arises. There are truly endless ways to share what you know with your dog-loving community, or to assist fellow dog pros dedicated to serving the same. Here are two examples to get your ideas flowing… Example 1: Leave those brochures under your bed. Lesson learned. Instead of brochures, think about a series of useful tip sheets. You can take the tip sheet approach instead of traditional fliers, too. Marketing your puppy class? Put out tip sheets on puppy socialization, puppy biting, and housetraining—all with information about your class on the back. Looking for new dog walking clients? A tip sheet or rack card about how to choose a dog walker is invaluable education in this age of on-demand dog walking apps, and shows off your professionalism. Example 2: A quick interview. Been putting off stopping by to introduce yourself to local vets? Afraid to step foot back in the local pet supply store after having your request to put out business cards rebuffed? Who would say no to free publicity plus an ego boost? Ready to step outside your marketing box? Next, build a marketing calendar to maximize your efforts by spreading them consistently throughout the year. Site Highlights.

With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. We're here to help! We firmly believe that if you are going to do something in life, do it the right way and do it as best as you can. We view our puppies as extensions of our family. The adoption process is an opportunity to blend our family and yours, and we keep in touch with many of our puppies' families over the years. Our advanced health testing, cutting-edge socialization, and continual customer support provide the best experience possible for families who adopt our golden retrievers. We know purchasing a puppy is a huge decision in your life, and we invite you to join us. We believe in good health. Many breeders focus on a "show" quality dog or a certain look. At Summer's Goldens, we focus on life-long family companions. While we carry many Champion bloodlines, we use careful genetic selection to lower the COI Coefficient Of Inbreeding of our dogs and improve the breed. Lower COI contributes to better long-term health and benefits golden retrievers as a whole. We don't breed just for today; we breed with the future in mind to have healthy, happy golden retrievers for decades to come. We follow the health-testing guidelines of the American Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club of America by examining our adult dogs' hips, elbows, eyes, and heart. We only want the finest goldens to become mothers and fathers. We also do genetic testing through Embark , one of the most reputable and thorough genetic companies. By pairing healthy, genetically diverse parents, we provide the best possible conditions for puppies to live long and healthy lives. This is especially important for purebred dogs like golden retrievers. Not only do we focus on health, but we also take extra care to socialize our puppies well. We strive to cultivate friendly personality traits in our Golden Retriever Puppies for sale. High-quality socialization during the first two months of a puppy's life is one of the most critical components of its lifelong development. Socialization provides a strong foundation for emotionally healthy, well-adjusted adult dogs. This is easy to claim but hard to do. There simply is no replacement for quality time spent with puppies. We follow the lead of Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia and start with early neurological stimulation ENS when the puppies are just three days old. We continue thorough socialization until the puppies leave us. This includes exposing our puppies to a variety of different surfaces to walk on; human touch all over their bodies; temperature changes; different sounds like fireworks, doorbells, cats meowing, and car engines; children; baths and nail trims, and more. We want our puppies to be more than just physically healthy; we want them to be mentally and emotionally ready for their future families. You are welcome to read our reviews on Google and Facebook , as well as the Testimonials on our site. Our goal is to improve the breed of golden retrievers and provide outstanding companions for families. Contact us today and experience joy through our golden retrievers! What can you expect when you pick up your puppy? All of our puppies receive plenty of love and attention. We include a care package with every puppy to help you get started on the right paw. It includes the puppy's baby photos, a blanket with the mother's scent, toys, a bag of the puppy's current food, and more to help your puppy transition as smoothly as possible. We offer lifelong support for every puppy and welcome families' questions and updates. We feel responsible for our puppies and want them to have loving homes their entire lives. We ask potential families to complete the Puppy Application on our website. We allow families to choose their puppy based on the order of deposits received. All deposits are non-refundable unless we do not have a puppy for you. Please contact Marta with any questions! Where do our Golden Retrievers live? Therefore, it is imperative to look for a healthy well-bred Frenchie, even if you have to pay more. Although small, French bulldogs may have a stubborn streak in them making them a little bit more difficult to train than other dogs. French bulldogs do not need a lot of exercises. Frenchies have fairly low energy levels. So, if you want to take your dog for long hikes on trails, then a Frenchie is not for you. They are loud breathers and snore a lot. Here are several pointers that should help you in your search for the perfect fur buddy. A reputable and ethical breeder invests in genetic testing of their breeding stock and will be able to prove the same to you. An ethical breeder will not allow a dog who has been tested positive for genetic problems to be used for breeding. If a puppy is bred correctly and has an excellent health history then there is little chance of it developing any health problems. Your breeder should also be able to provide you the documentation of the vaccinations of the first 8 to 10 weeks of the pup. Good breeders will allow their breeding stock to have one or two litter every year so that they can protect the health of the female French bulldog. Even if there are multiple breeding females, a good breeder makes sure they do not have litters within the same period. So, ask the breeder about their breeding policy. Beware of the unethical breeders who exploit dogs and scam the potential owners. It is advisable to visit the facility and make sure that the dogs live in a positive and clean environment. A reputable breeder will not have several litters at once and also a variety of dog breeds for sale. An ethical breeder will also not try to let the puppy go before they are 8 to 10 weeks old. It can be dangerous for the puppy to be introduced into a new environment without prior vaccinations. Do not fall for what seems to be an abnormally low price. Ask the breeder about the health history of the parents as Frenchies have severe health issues in their bloodlines. Check for the eyes of the puppy as well as the parents for redness or any other issues. Always ask the breeder to show you the parents so that you know what your pup will grow into. It may not be always possible to see the father but this is a must with the mother. Ask the breeder if the puppies have been socialized. You can also ask the breeder for references who would have previously bought a French bulldog puppy from them. A refusal from the breeder should raise red flags! If a breeder is not telling you what you need to know, then just walk away. If you did not get a French bulldog that was AKC registered, you may find value in it, and the process in having your bulldog AKC registered is fairly simple. There are a lot of differences between male and female Frenchies in terms of personalities and temperaments. Male French bulldogs are more playful, mischievous, and assertive. On the other hand, females are often more docile, moody, dominating, and affectionate between the two. Female bulldogs are typically easier to house train than their male counterparts. Female dogs, although timid, get aggressive quickly if tempted and often more temperamental as puppies. They become calmer with age. Male French bulldogs also have the same problem but are less aggressive than females. These are some typical personality traits, however, the personality of a French bulldog is also dependent on the environment they live in, how they are raised, and trained. Spaying and neutering French bulldogs will also make a huge difference in their personalities, curtailing a lot of negative traits in both the sexes. Spaying and neutering French bulldogs reduces their health issues, makes them calmer, and easier to train. Another difference between a male and a female French bulldog is the difference in cost. Female French bulldogs are more expensive than the male French bulldogs because you can choose to breed her. Male Frenchies have big heads and a larger physical frame. They weigh more than females and are more susceptible to health problems than females. Male puppies are more energetic than females, who tend to be more relaxed. It ultimately boils down to the level of care and training you put into your dog. Why are French bulldogs so expensive? French bulldogs are expensive because of the expenses required for breeding and caring for them. The price of a French bulldog depends upon the number of puppies in the litter, color of fur, and the genes carried. French bulldogs come in an array of different colors. French bulldogs in rarer colors can cost a whopping price. The color of a French bulldog is dependent upon the genes of their parents. But some most common colors of French bulldogs are white, fawn, brindle, or pied white and brindle. Lilac, blue, and chocolate are rare colors and cost more than the other colors. Blue French bulldogs have a blue coat which is the result of a genetic disorder called color dilution Alopecia. French bulldogs are not easy dogs to breed and there are lots of reasons for this. If you are seriously thinking about bringing a French bulldog into your home you should know all the pros and cons of owning a Frenchie. Exorbitant Tests and Procedures A series of pricey tests and procedures are done during the breeding process. Progesterone tests These tests are required to know when exactly is the female ovulating. Blood tests are also needed to make sure the female is healthy and strong enough to carry puppies. Artificial insemination and c-section A natural way of mating is hardly accessible and therefore, female French bulldogs have to be artificially inseminated. This whole process is time-consuming and expensive. French bulldogs have relatively large heads and shoulders and so a female French bulldog cannot birth naturally as the birthing canal is very small and cannot handle the labor. Another reason is their narrow hips. The large heads and shoulders of puppies can also get stuck and can result in injury or their death. Therefore, all the French bulldog puppies are delivered through c-section, which is an expensive procedure. Then come the pregnancy tests, prenatal care, including check-ups, a good diet, supplements — all adding up the cost. High Protein Diet A French bulldog female also needs to be fed a high protein diet to induce lactation and to help her provide the puppies with plenty of vitamins. Constant Attention and Care French bulldog puppies can also not be left alone with their mommy for the first several days. A female French bulldog is a very good mom but can sometimes unknowingly roll over her babies and suffocate them. Newborn French bulldog puppies also need to be fed every three hours and require a great deal of care and attention. Health Issues Because they are brachycephalic dogs flat face they are prone to more health problems, especially breathing issues. Their skin folds look cute but can easily become infected. They are also susceptible to eye conditions like the cherry eye, and other problems such as hip dysplasia, joint disorders, and heart problems. A good breeder will conduct tests to ensure the pup does not have any of the preventable genetic health problems. Another reason for the high cost of the French bulldog is that their litter is relatively small with only one or two puppies. After understanding how much time, money, effort goes into the breeding of French bulldog puppies, you should have a new appreciation for the breeders. High-quality food, vet bills, toys, medicines, vaccinations, treats make breeding the French bulldogs an expensive affair. Despite the plethora of health issues associated with the extreme facial features of the French bulldog, there is a staggering demand for the French bulldog puppies which has given a fillip to unscrupulous and unethical breeding of this wonderful breed. From where you buy a French bulldog is your choice. However, always research carefully about where your French bulldog puppy comes from and buy them only from reputable breeders. It is important to do your homework on the breeder. The French bulldog is by no means a cheap breed but having pet insurance can surely mitigate those worries. Plus 4 Recommended Plans. But if you are looking for a furry companion who will have you amused and in splits all day, then look no further! Life is much better with a Frenchie. Post Views: .I know I did when my wife persuaded us to go and see our own dog for the first time. Of the four of them, this one little fella scampered over to me and immediately started chewing on my knuckles. That when I fell in love with him. It was a really simple decision in which one we wanted to take home. As you know, we went on to name him Claude. But, given hindsight, there are some questions I would have asked the breeder before deciding to buy him. And there are also some things I should have looked for too. It was our first ever dog though, so hindsight is a wonderful thing. However, there are unscrupulous breeders and there are certain health and physical problems view all Frenchie health conditions and concerns you should check for before you get too excited. It also includes some questions to ask a breeder when buying a French Bulldog puppy. Choose a male puppy if you want a more energetic dog: or a female if you want a more relaxed dog. There are subtle behavioural differences in the two genders which you can read in this blog post where I discuss the differences between male and female Frenchies. Make sure your breeder is knowledgeable: on breeding and cares for the puppies. I would always do online research into the breeder before I would even visit them. Be wary of what seems to be an abnormally low price: this can be a sign of an unhealthy puppy. Red eye can be a signal of a health problem. Ask the breeder how many litters the mother has had: a French Bulldog should only really have 1 litter a year , preferably only one every couple of years. Any more than that is a warning sign that she is being over-bred, and health issues could be present. Ask if the puppy has been checked by a vet: and has had the relevant vaccinations. If not, walk away as this should be handled by the breeder before the puppies go on sale. It can give you some insight into what type of dog your Frenchie puppy is going to grow into. If the breeder refuses to let you see the mother, then walk away as this is a huge warning sign. Ask if the parents have had health checks: as this can give you insight into any potential health problems further down the line. Conditions to look out for include hip problems, cataracts, cherry eye , deafness, and soft palate issues. Ask how old the parents are: if the mother is less than 3 years old, any genetic health conditions might not yet have manifested themselves. Ask how often the puppies have been handled: the more the young pups have been handled by humans frequently it will be far easier to get him used to all the excitement in store when you get him home. Ask to speak to a previous client: the best breeders will be more than happy to let you talk with people who have previously bought a Frenchie puppy from them. Ask for a hearing test: whilst this might not always be possible, it is a concern. White Frenchies in particular can develop hearing loss at birth due to a congenital issue. You can read more about this my recent French Bulldog hearing loss blog post. Cheap and rude breeders are an absolute no-no. When buying your Frenchie, you need a caring breeder that gladly answers your questions and shows you the parents and tell you about their history and problems. If you are dealing with a breeder who is just looking to make a quick buck and not telling you what you should know then walk away. How to best buy a healthy French bulldog puppy There are several factors you should consider before buying a French Bulldog who is hopefully going to live a healthy life. Sadly Frenchies can have some severe health issues in their bloodlines which you should look out for when purchasing your puppy. Health issues can include:. Keep on reading to learn everything about French Bulldog puppies! French bulldogs All you need to know about Frenchies: a short summary History in a nutshell French Bulldogs were first bred as a smaller version of the English Bulldog in the 19th-century England. They were particularly popular among lacemakers in Nottinghamshire, who initially kept them to chase rats but soon fell in love with their small size and calm, friendly nature. After the Industrial Revolution, they had to move to southern France where lacemaking was still done by hand and took their dogs with them. Frenchies soon got popular in the circles of French artists, actors, writers in Paris as well as rich Americans visiting the city. In fact, they loved Frenchies so much that they took them to the US, where they finally got recognized by the AKC in .Frenchie Characteristics French Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds thanks to their fun, adaptable, friendly nature and distinctive look. You can easily recognize them by their flat, heavily wrinkled faces and large, erect bat ears, which make them absolutely adorable. Despite having the strong, muscular body of a bulldog Frenchies are small in size: adult males usually weigh 20 to 28 pounds while females are 16 to 24 pounds. Frenchie Colors Frenchies come in a wide variety of different colors and patterns. There are standard French Bulldog colors like black, fawn, cream and patterns like pied and brindle, which are considered common for the breed. Rare and unique colors like blue and lilac, as well as patterns like tan and merle have gained more popularity in recent years. Frenchie Personality French Bulldogs probably have the biggest personality among all the dog breeds. They are funny, friendly and insanely affectionate, making them the perfect companions for anyone. They are also highly intelligent and need a fair amount of mental stimulation. Frenchies are like small children: simply irresistible! Giving only high- quality food, ensuring regular training and exercise, finding a good vet and not exposing them to too much heat is also essential to provide a long and happy life for your French Bulldog. They are little clowns who always do something silly to make you laugh! They are amazing companions who get along with everyone in the family from small kids to older people, other dog breeds and even cats. Shall we go on?! When it comes to age and gender, younger female Frenchies usually cost a couple of hundreds more than older male puppies. What's included in the price? Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. And what a sassy old lady she became! Delilah enjoyed traveling, we bought a camper so so could always be with us. Unfortunately her health got the best of her and she went to meet up with her brother. We adopted her when she was 13, so getting to spend 3 years with her was such a blessing. She loved to play fetch even when she could barely see the ball, she loved belly rubs and peanut butter. Her favorite thing ever was getting to go to the monthly meet and greets mainly to receive pets from everybody and volunteering at other events. During thunderstorms, she would bark at the door, to keep her family safe. My mother loved Noli and Noli loved Mom. I miss them both. We were so fortunate to have adopted him and his brother Mugsy from a rescue in Indiana. He gave us joy and love every day and never ever forgot his 8pm treat time. Even on his last night he made his way over to my chair, sat in front of me and waited for his treats. He was regal and reserved and the leader of his grumble - the alpha dog. He was the first out the door in the morning and the first to start the daily barking - at the neighbors, at other dogs, at anything moving in the trees - and he patrolled his yard with his fast moving little legs. He could catch food in his little mouth like a circus performer and he liked nothing more than ending the day with a neck rub and a Nutter Butter. He brought a lot of happiness to the people who loved him and a lot of comfort too when times we hard, with his quiet unassuming ways. God never made a better dog. I was so happy to get my own dog. She was the best thing that ever entered my life. She would run all around the backyard everyday. One day, I noticed a change in her. I took her to the vet and they said she had mast cell cancer. I was very sad and could tell she was in pain. I was sad to make the choice to put Joy down, but it was for the best. When I came home from the vet on Jan. Sweet dreams! She loved dressing up and running big circles around big dogs at the dog park. Her best friend was a boxer and she loved chasing the kids. She got to spend one night in our forever home and we woke up to her having trouble breathing. I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer. It was so abrupt and we had a hard time accepting the loss of our baby girl. We still miss her every day. I was so happy! My three kids were also happy not just for me, but to have a other dog in the house! I looked into the dog's brown and said "Welcome to your forever.I named her Lucky because.I have always wanted to have a dog named. My oldest, Lucy, 5 years old said " she looks like a Rascal! Not a Lucky! Adams is our last name of course I skip work the next day to be with Lucky and my three kids. My 3 year old, Mary and her twin, Kate love the park. So, We all got in the car and went to the park. Lucky was with us also! There is a dog park there too. Lucky went there She made friends all over!! I said to Lucy " Lucky is going to change our life! Well, we had other dog in house, Bailey, who was old at the time and did not want to deal with "this thing" in the house. I have always brought Bailey to work with me everyday. Well, when I went to work, I brought Bailey and Lucky stayed at home with the girls and their babysitter grandma When the new year started, Lucy had to go back to school. The girls really really wanted to go to work with me, so, they did. My husband, Matt took Lucy to school. Then he went to work. I picked up Lucy and went back to work. Bailey and Lucky Rascal were all there. For years Lucky has been to time of our life! Till that day, Lucky got sick. Bailey had already gone. I took Lucky to the vet. I went home to my kids and Matt. I told them the Lucky has to be put down. My three kids had friends over and made a funeral for the dog. Lucky, Lucky was in our life. Yes it did change us. It changed everyone! The eyes where green, but, looked at me with gratefulness. And I loved the white fur I was at the pound that day and I said " I want this pug. My family 3 year old girl, 4 year old boy and a husband with 2 cats and 1 other dog and I had just moved in our new house in LA. I was very happy for it. We were in a nice part of town and a nice house. For the animals and children had lots of room to play! Went this pug came home, my 4 year old said " lets name it Cookie!! Milo is a great name I thought. That night I think that poor pug forgot about his harsh past. He was only 4 years of age when we got him. All the years Milo had lived with us, where the best times of our lives. We moved to Lexington, KY 2 mouths after Milo's death. We where all very sad about him leaving us, but, I could not see Milo live in pain, so, I made that choice. I am hoping to get a new pug from bluegrass pug rescue! Miss you Milo! The blue eyes, the white fur, Rascal grew up to be like his name, Rascal. He was born in Louisville, KY. But, when he was 15, 4 days before his birthday we moved to New York. But, I could see the age getting to him, he start to feel sick, I could tell. It was April 30, , that I took him to the vet. The vet said " I am very sorry to say this but, I think Rascal needs to be put down. I opened the door and there, in the living room where my two children and husband. I was crying. I told them that we must put Rascal down. My daughter, Mary age 9 started to crying, she ran upstairs and hid, she did not come out to eat dinner. My husband, Alex and I went up to the vet after taking the children to school. I kissed Rascal and cried. Alex did the same. But, something came to me, I took Rascal out of the doctors arms and ran to the car. Alex got in and before he knew it was off. I picked up the kids from school, and we all went back to the vet. When we got there I gave Rascal a shake and kiss, everyone else did the same. Mary and Ella cried. I cried, Alex cried. I got a new dog, just for Mary and Ella, and so my other dog could have a friend. Mary and Ella named the dog Rascal Jr. I knew life would not be the same, but I get over it sometimes. In my heart, I still miss Rascal. In memory of our faithful, loving dog, Rascal. Those eyes melted my husband's heart and he brought her home. Unfortunately for him she bonded to me more and followed me everywhere, Her favorite place was on the couch, her favorite activity was eating. She developed mast cell cancer and it got bad fast. We couldn't let her suffer for our benefit so now she is gone. Pugs are the best little buddies ever! MIss you dear Stella! She brought so much joy to our family and our love for her had no boundaries. She was such a special girl and fought so hard! While her body gave out here on earth, it gives me peace knowing she's now strong, able to run and is without pain. Thanks again to all of you for loving and supporting her through her journey. He was loved so much and we are broken without him. Heaven gained a true angel and we will never ever forget him. We lost her so sudden and unexpectedly, of an unknown cause, at only 6 years old. She had passed in the night peacefully in bed with our son. She was our very first pug and was such a fun, playful, stubborn, and feisty little thing. She especially loved her alligator, Mr. Moo, and hot dog toys. Whenever we would return home from being gone she would get so excited and would howl…. She loved to lick the dishes clean while I was loading the dishwasher. Taking her to the vet or to get her nails trimmed was always quite the challenge! She often followed me wherever I went, even to the bathroom! She had the most pet-able head, and her tail was tight like a cinnamon bun. We loved how she would get so excited for Christmas and Easter mornings, just like our kids. Lily always got presents too! Lily was such a huge part of our family and was included in family photos. Although we lost her way too soon, we are deeply thankful for the short time we had with her. She will hold a special place in all of our hearts and we will be reminiscing about her often. Our special memories will carry us forward until we meet again, sweet Lily Bug. We will dearly miss him every day, he will always be in our hearts. Until I see you again Harley,R. She was the reason we rushed home after work, and the keeper of our hearts. We lost her to cancer after only 9 short years. Not a day goes by that we don't speak of her. Some people say that animals don't have souls. One day with Petunia would change their minds. My sweet girl wouldn't leave my side when I was sick. When I had a tough day she was there trying to cheer me up with cuddles and kisses. Petunia was pure love, and she is dearly missed. We all miss you Maxie Boy. We are devastated. Maya was the center of our lives. She made every day better, listened to all our problems and made us laugh at her quirky antics. We cherished her every snort, snore, rabbit hop, and attempt to eat bubbles and rain. Maya can never be replaced and will always and forever be the Pug that changed our lives for the better. She left broken hearts behind as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge but we thank god for every moment we were blessed to be her family. In a perfect world we will be with her again one day. We will love her forever. I was never able to have children. God, knew my heart and desire to be a mom, so gave me Chloe. She gave me 15 too short, beautiful years of PURE love and joy. If love, could have kept her here she would have stayed with me forever. You are forever loved and missed my precious baby, Momma. She is greatly missed. Daisy girl, I will forever cherish the happy memories we made together. Thank you for your unconditional love and for allowing me the privilege of loving and caring for you. I wish we had been able to have more time together but I am grateful for the time we had. I no longer rush home from work each day just to see you and sometimes, I forget that you're really gone. But, you still make me smile and warm my heart when I think of you. I love you my girl, my Baby Dee-Dee. He was funny, courageous, always hungry and the love of my life. We had a very special bond, we spent every minute together when I was home. We snuggled every night, and Piglet knew when I went to work, mom would be back soon. Piglet passed from an unknown illness, and it has broken my heart. She was so loyal, protective and loving. She would watch TV with me and play with me all the time, she kept me company and never left my side. At times she even went to work with me, and she loved it. She was so smart and knew exactly what I needed and I knew what she needed. She will forever be missed. I have a hole in my heart now and pray she doesn't feel like I left her at the Vet. I was on my way to pick her up so she could be home with mom, her favorite place to be when she didn't feel well, when I received the call that she had passed. I wish I would have taken her home the night before when I was visiting her and she gave me that look like mom, please don't leave me here. Piggy, I love you so much and miss you more than I could have ever imagined. Donna Williams.
Actually, you can, when it comes to vegetables. Feeding vegetables is a great way to keep your dog healthy while also reducing costs and extra trips to the store to buy pet food. Freezing Cooking vegetables in large batches and storing them in the freezer is a great way to save time and effort. After pureeing, put the veggies in an ice cube tray, and just grab a cube when you're in a hurry! Simple, and healthy. Although you often see rhubarb in jams and fruit pies, it is theoretically a vegetable! They are nutritious, low in calories, and are an excellent overall disease-fighting vegetable. They can be eaten raw or cooked. If feeding these veggies raw to your Golden Retriever, ensure you thoroughly wash them first to eliminate any leftover traces of bacteria or pesticides. Spinach Golden Retrievers can eat spinach. This super nutritious food has lots of good qualities to benefit your dog. It is high in iron and provides fiber, vitamins A, B, C, and K, beta-carotene, folate, potassium, and antioxidants. It fights disease and is a known cancer fighter. Although the food of Popeye, there is a little controversy about whether you should feed your dog spinach — a high dose of oxalic acid. Healthy dogs can efficiently process small amounts of dissolvable oxalates. I recommend steaming the spinach first as this is the healthiest way of cooking to preserve all the goodness. Sweet Potatoes Golden Retrievers can eat sweet potatoes. In addition to vitamins A, B6, and C, they are also rich in calcium, copper, thiamine, iron, folate, potassium, copper, and thiamine. Sweet potatoes are also rich in beta-carotene, which converts into vitamin A for healthy skin and strong eye health. They are great for the overall health of your Golden Retriever, support the immune system, and reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Because sweet potatoes are primarily starchy carbohydrates, if your dog is overweight, under-active, or diabetic, they are best avoided unless you give him very little. However, they are a healthier option than cooked white potatoes and are a popular vegetable in many dog foods. You should peel and cook them first before feeding them to your dog. Sweet potatoes also hold their nutritional value better when steamed or boiled rather than baking. Squash All varieties of squash are safe for your Golden Retriever to eat. Squash is very nutritious and has many health benefits for dogs. It contains beta-carotene, fiber, magnesium, potassium, vitamin A, C, and K. It is excellent for the eyes, skin, bones, and immune system and helps fight certain diseases. If your dog suffers from diarrhea, a small amount of cooked pumpkin mixed into his regular food can help. Zucchini Golden Retrievers can eat zucchini. This veggie is nutrient-rich and includes fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. Zucchini also belongs to the squash family, but it is generally easier to digest than most squashes. An excellent idea for the summer is to give your dog a thin slice of frozen zucchini. Too much can cause excess gas! Can Golden Retrievers Eat Vegetables? So now you have the list of all the vegetables your dog can surely eat; you might also be wondering, should Golden Retrievers actually eat vegetables? Are they not just carnivores? Golden Retrievers can eat vegetables and benefit from them in their diet. They provide an additional source of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Although dogs fall into the taxonomical order of Carnivora, they are deemed omnivores. But why? So they are not just carnivores. Other main physiological factors that support the idea that your Golden Retriever can eat vegetables include dogs with broad flat molars capable of grinding up fibrous plants and smaller intestines than other known omnivores. Vegetables can be a significant health boost for your Golden Retriever. They also contain no cholesterol and have less sugar than fruits. Generally, a few small pieces a day will be just fine for your Golden. Do you want to know what to feed your Retriever? Can Golden Retrievers be Vegetarian? Vegetarianism in dogs is a controversial topic. There are strong views for either side and a wide range of opinions in between. But what are the facts? Can Golden Retrievers be vegetarian? Golden Retrievers can be vegetarian as they are omnivores capable of digesting a meat-free diet. Most dogs can eat a vegetarian diet and thrive. However, careful planning with an expert canine nutritionist is essential to ensure your dog receives the proper nutrition to keep healthy. How to Feed Vegetables to Dogs Here are some guidelines on how to give your Retriever vegetables: Introduce vegetables slowly to avoid an upset stomach. Wash the vegetables first to eliminate dirt, bacteria, or residual pesticides. Cook veggies to aid digestion. I like to use a steamer. Give in small bite-sized pieces to prevent choking or stomach issues. You can feed frozen vegetables for convenience. Be vigilant of canned vegetables as many are high in sodium and other additives. They are allium family members, and the intake of toxic portions of these vegetables can damage red blood cells, making them more likely to burst and cause anemia. Garlic is five times more poisonous than leeks and onions. If your Golden swallows a toxic dose, he may show vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, weakness, difficulty breathing, and collapse can occur. Raw or green Potato Raw or green potatoes contain solanine that can affect the nervous system of your Golden Retriever. This poison can also induce blurred vision, disrupt digestion, and slow heart rate. Peeled cooked potatoes are okay as the amount of solanine is substantially reduced during cooking. Green tomatoes are also in this category. Rhubarb Leaves Although rhubarb plant stems are safe for your Golden Retriever, the leaves contain soluble oxalic acid, which is poisonous if ingested in sufficient quantities. Signs of poisoning include vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, weakness, shaking, and, in severe cases, kidney failure can occur. If you grow rhubarb at home, keep it enclosed and ensure your Golden is always accompanied in the garden area. Mushrooms There are thousands of species of wild mushrooms, and many are deadly to dogs. Mushroom poisoning in dogs can have serious consequences, including liver and kidney failure, confusion, convulsions, and in severe cases, death. Mushrooms purchased in grocery stores are primarily safe if they are plain, without butter, garlic, or seasoning. We all love treating our dogs and trying something new, and veggies are a great option. Many veggies are safe, but some are better than others. Experiment by feeding sparingly and little by little. Most vegetables are better served cooked to support digestion. Know the vegetables that are toxic to dogs. Related Posts You May Like:. This is especially true for vegetables. After all, vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Most of us could stand to get more of these healthy veggies, so why not our Golden Retriever, right? But, considering dogs are carnivores, and their natural diets do not include the need for vegetables, one might wonder if Golden Retrievers can or should eat vegetables? Golden Retrievers can eat some vegetables as a rare treat or snack. While they can eat some vegetables on occasion, moderation is essential. Certain vegetables should be avoided due to the potential for gastric issues or toxicity concerns. We discussed whether Golden Retrievers could eat fruit yes and good fruit options versus bad fruit options in a previous post. Unfortunately, we discovered that some fruits were outright toxic to Golden Retrievers, while other fruits were safe to eat in moderation. Others are not harmful, but they can cause digestive distress, resulting in gas, bloating, diarrhea or vomiting. The toxic vegetables need to be avoided outright, and you should ensure your Golden Retriever does not have access to those. Much like fruits, the occasional veggie indulgence is acceptable. However, any vegetables provided to your Golden Retriever should only be from the healthy list and in moderation. Some are outright toxic to your Golden Retriever, while others have the potential for some issues. Asparagus is not toxic to your dog. However, it can cause stomach issues — gas, bloating, indigestion — especially in its raw form. Cooked asparagus is more comfortable for your dog to chew. Cooking breaks down the vegetable making it less likely to cause stomach issues, but it also depletes many nutrients. There are better options for your dog, however. Garlic Garlic, like onions, is part of the Allium family and is toxic to dogs. In addition, garlic contains thiosulfate, which is a very toxic substance to canines. Thiosulfate can cause damage to red blood cells resulting in hemolytic anemia. Symptoms include rapid breathing, dark urine, lethargy, jaundice, diarrhea, vomiting, and gastric upset. Keep garlic and garlic-laden foods away from your Golden Retriever. Also, be mindful of garlic pills, which can be dropped on the floor and ingested by your Golden. Kale contains a few substances that are unhealthy for your Golden Retriever and potentially toxic at higher levels. Kale contains Isothiocyanate and calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalate is especially concerning because it can cause kidney and bladder stones. Isothiocyanate can cause gastric issues, specifically severe gastric irritation in large quantities. Avoid kale due to the nasty double combo of calcium oxalate and Isothiocyanate. Onions Like garlic discussed above, onions also are part of the Allium family and contain thiosulfate. Same toxicity, the same potential for hemolytic anemia, and other severe symptoms. Keep onions away from your Golden Retriever. Peas and Potatoes While peas and cooked potatoes raw is never an option for your dog were long considered healthy and may still be, this may not be the case after all. According to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration issued an alert about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy DCM in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds or potatoes as main ingredients. This alert is specifically concerning for the Golden Retriever owner. Stern also found the diagnosed Goldens were all eating the same grain-free diet that included potatoes and peas, among others, as the main ingredients. While at this time, the link between diet and DCM seems to be a correlation only, peas and potatoes make the unhealthy list as a precaution. Talk to your veterinarian if you have any concerns or questions. Wild Mushrooms Avoid wild mushrooms. Some can be very toxic and even deadly to your dogs. Yes, deadly. Mushrooms provide very little nutritional value to your dog. They are often prepared in combination with onions or garlic, which is highly toxic to your Golden Retriever. There are better, more nutritious options on the list for your Golden to enjoy, should you choose to make vegetables a part of its diet. These vegetables can make good snacks for your Golden Retriever in smaller quantities. Raw peppers might be difficult for your Golden Retriever to digest, so cooked peppers are better for digestion. If you choose to cook the peppers, be wary of any added sauces or spices such as garlic or onions. Also, peppers apply to bell peppers only — not chili or other varieties. Peppers are a good source of beta-carotene, vitamins A and C, potassium, folic acid, iron, and fiber. Bell peppers also contain vitamin B6 and are low in calories. Broccoli Broccoli could be on both the healthy and unhealthy list. Golden Retrievers can safely eat broccoli florets. However, the stocks can cause intestinal obstruction or choking concerns, so avoid those. Cooked broccoli without any sauces or seasoning is more comfortable for your dog to chew and swallow. Broccoli as well as cauliflower and kale contain isothiocyanate. This substance can cause stomach upset in your Golden Retriever. Because of this, you should only feed broccoli to your dog in minimal quantities. Large quantities can cause gas, bloating, and even significant health problems. However, provided owners feed the florets to their dog and keep the amounts very small and infrequent, there should be little issues with broccoli as an occasional snack. However, there are much safer options if you choose to feed your Golden Retriever vegetables. Brussel Sprouts Brussel sprouts are safe for your Golden Retriever. Brussel sprouts are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Yes, Brussel sprouts are healthy for humans and dogs alike. Similar to us as well, Brussel sprouts can cause gas and flatulence in our Golden Retrievers. So, be forewarned that your Golden Retriever may gas you out of the house after eating Brussel sprouts. Carrots Carrots are an excellent snack for your dog and are most definitely Golden Retriever approved. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, vitamin A, and fiber. While carrots can be eaten raw, cooked, or steamed is best. With raw carrots, much of the nutrients are lost due to cellulose. Cellulose makes it challenging to digest the vegetable and absorb the nutrients. Cooking breaks down the cellulose, making digestion and nutrient absorption easier for your dog. However, raw carrots are great for your Golden Retrievers teeth, and they like the crunch. So, consider mixing it up with raw and cooked to get both benefits. A full carrot can even be frozen to help a teething puppy with sore gums. Cauliflower is an excellent source of fiber, vitamins K and C, calcium, potassium, and folate. However, like broccoli, you need to go easy on the amount given due to its Isothiocyanate content. Isothiocyanate can cause gas, bloating, or significant health problems if given in large quantities. Celery Celery is a safe snack for your Golden Retriever. Low in calories and fat and high in fiber, this crunchy snack is packed with nutrients. Celery is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K and contains manganese, folate, and potassium. Celery is excellent diet food for dogs struggling with weight issues or obesity. But, like all vegetables and fruits, keep portion sizes small. Corn Yes, this vegetable some classify it as a grain is perfectly safe for dogs. The corn kernels are safe for dogs, not the cob. Corn gets a bad rap at times for being void of nutritional value. In truth, corn has protein, fiber, vitamin E and beta carotene, omega-six fatty acids, and linoleic acid which dogs cannot make on their own. Cooked corn is best for your Golden Retriever. Corn kernels are fine, but avoid feeding the cob. Green Beans Greens beans are a safe vegetable for your dog. Green beans can be eaten by your Golden Retriever raw or cooked. This vegetable is low in fat and calories, high in fiber, and is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K, calcium, folate, magnesium, and potassium. It also contains omega-three fatty acids. As with any extreme dietary changes, talk to your vet first before considering this if your dog has weight issues. Cucumbers The water-packed cucumber is a great summer snack for your Golden Retriever. A medium cucumber contains about eight calories in a half-cup of slices. Although this crunchy vegetable is packed with water, it also includes some excellent vitamins and minerals. Cucumber contains vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and magnesium. Lettuce: Iceberg, Romaine, and Arugula Lettuce, including romaine, iceberg, and arugula, are safe for your Golden Retriever. Lettuce is mostly water, and there is not much in it that should pose any safety issues for your dog. The high water content and low calories make lettuce a good snack for your Golden Retriever, especially in the hot summer months. Iceberg lettuce provides nutrients such as vitamins K and C and calcium, potassium, vitamin C, and folate. Romaine is high in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. Unfortunately, both iceberg and romaine are low in fiber. Arugula is incredibly healthy and nutrient-dense lettuce. Arugula is high in fiber and phytonutrients. Arugula also provides a healthy dose of vitamin A, calcium, folate, and potassium. Arugula is a cruciferous vegetable in the same family that includes broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Arugula has many of the high antioxidants and phytonutrients found in the cruciferous family. Also, wash all lettuce before feeding it to your Golden Retriever to prevent contamination with E. Spinach Spinach is one of those maybe vegetables like broccoli. In the case of spinach, that substance is oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can lead to kidney damage in your dog. However, your Golden Retriever would have to eat large quantities for that to be an issue. Feeding spinach to your Golden Retriever is a personal choice, but if you do, keep it in small quantities only to be safe. As for health benefits, spinach is packed with nutrients. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins A, B, C, and K. Spinach also contains iron, antioxidants, beta-carotene, and fiber. Squash including Zucchini and Pumpkin Squashes such as butternut, zucchini, and pumpkin are all safe for your dog to eat if cooked. Technically, zucchini and pumpkin are part of the squash family, which is why I have included them together. While technically, all squashes are botanically a fruit, they seem better suited to the vegetable list. Butternut squash is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. Zucchini is low in calories and a great source of fiber, vitamins A, C, and K, potassium, and manganese. Pumpkin is best steamed and mashed. Pumpkins are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, including beta-carotene, carotenoids, potassium, and Vitamin C; it also has some calcium and B-complex vitamins. In addition, pumpkin is high in fiber and low in sodium. Like fruits, the key is moderation, and the same rule applies. Gardeners should be mindful if your Golden Retriever has easy access to your garden. Your Golden Retriever may help itself to some of the vegetable varieties that are less than optimal or downright toxic to your dog. While small amounts of vegetables are okay, large quantities of vegetables — even healthy ones — can potentially cause gastric issues. For example, consider erecting a fence around your garden to ensure your Golden Retriever cannot help himself to vegetables in your garden. Our pup Bailey up on the garden boxes. Another concern is digestive issues. Some vegetables can cause your Golden Retriever some stomach issues, while others not so much. Vegetables in their raw form can be tough to digest for dogs. Provided your Golden Retriever is only getting a small amount, there should be little issues with vegetables, provided your choices come from the healthy list discussed. An older or senior Golden Retriever might not do well with certain vegetables that it tolerated well as a younger dog. Final Thoughts Vegetables, while healthy for us, can potentially cause issues with your Golden Retriever. However, veggies should pose little issues as an occasional treat or snack and often make a better alternative to commercial treats.

The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. During their senior years, Labradoodles are more susceptible to health problems, which means owners need to keep a watchful eye. Labradoodle Size The size of labradoodle puppies for sale directly relates to the size of their parents and which generation of breed Labradoodle breeders chose. The larger the puppies, the larger the adult dog will be, and the faster their growth will be coming out of the puppy stage. Life Span Did You Know? A Labradoodle is a popular designer dog breed. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. However, it did not become popular until when the mix was specifically bred to create hypoallergenic guide dogs. Featured Labradoodle Article.
