White markings tend to be determined by the genes on the S locus. The white areas tend to be at the tip of the tail, end of the muzzle, breastbone, or paws. This is known as residual white. The cause may be unknown or may be due to a minor illness in the mother. This transition occurs when the pup is around months old and sheds his soft fluffy coat. This process can happen quickly or may take a few months. You may also see changes in the pattern. Nonetheless, she had many white markings across her chest as a puppy, which soon blended into her thick adult coat. Below is a picture of her at three months old. My 3-month-old German Shepherd Willow showing off her white chest markings! German Shepherds can have white paws. It usually appears on the tips of the paws. This study determined that the variant was associated with one or more spotting patterns in many dog breeds, including the German Shepherd. Regarding paws, white spotting can occur on one paw, all four, or any combination. What is a Panda German Shepherd? So, what exactly are they? They tend to have symmetrical markings of white forelock, muzzle, chest, belly, collar, and tail tip. The amount of white coloring can vary from dog to dog. They are typical-looking German Shepherds, other than their color, and have the same temperament and traits. The first-ever recorded Panda mutation occurred relatively recently in a female GSD in the year .Although these dogs look like they have Irish spotting consisting of white muzzle blazes and Border Collie-type markings, they are very different. This is due to being caused by the mutated dominant KIT gene. The gene that causes Irish spotting is yet to be identified. This allows German Shepherd breeders to establish whether the KIT gene mutation causes white patterning. There are often misunderstandings about whether German Shepherds with white markings can enter dog shows. However, this is a difficult question and depends entirely on the breed standard of the individual country. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. However, they are still allowed to be registered as purebred. They are also still permitted to participate in events, such as herding trials, tracking, and obedience. However, the consensus is inconspicuous white markings would not disqualify the dog from conformation. The UK Kennel Club also recognizes the all-white German Shepherd but states they are highly undesirable for conformation. However, they also refer to dogs having white markings. There are many varieties of coat colors in the German Shepherd breed. These are the main ones:. Next » by realone on 24 September - i have this litter of bou days and some puppies have white markings on the paws. The toe markings generally turn into color, usually a lighter tan and oftentimes the white chest spots will remain - it is not desirable but I have never seen an otherwise correct animal overly faulted for it. Seems to also run both ways, have seen white toes in both working and show lines and if you breed black and red dogs long enough you are gonna eventually have a blue!! I was told many years ago about this and when it actually happened, I was amazed!! One or more are sometimes void of pigment. This will remain most likely. This genetic feature is not terribly uncommon. Have had a show dog with one claw white and small patch on chest. Was the dominant pup so I took him for sport.Didnt matter to me. Have seen a few in shows and judges will overlook it if the rest is correct however all else being equal.Blues are simply a recessive that must be carried on both sides of breeding pair in order to appear in the puppies. The self color of the sire and dam have nothing to do with it. I don't think this much white will just disappear. Dreamtime, never said what I thought caused it, the comment was made to me by someone way more experienced than me.Have never researched it's transmission, would be an interesting study.Next » by stormy on 02 April - I went to look at a puppy today from a local breeder. She is the last little one left, and after seeing her I think I know why. She has white markings on her toes, chest, and a small white patch on her chin? Will these spots go away? Will the fade? What caused the spots? She is the only one out of the 10 pups with the white markings. Take a look at this dog. He is considered the first German Shepherd. His grandfather on his mother's side was a white German Shepherd. Eliminating that from the gene pool through selective breeding is part of why GSD's have so many health problems. If you like the puppy, go buy it, raise it, train it, most importantly enjoy it and provide it an excellent, life-long home, then the pup can wear its white markings as a badge of honor! As I have never seen this. And he is absolutely beautiful and wonderful. I don't care about breeding or showing. She would be a family pet and loved even with her white marks. There have been many top famous dogs with a little white on the chest and toes. Often it gets less noticed with age as the dog gets bigger. Good luck! The white gene is a recessive masking gene that causes the dog to be completely white. I bought a pup that had white marks on her toes and chest. Her pigment faded badly by her second birthday. So, beware, if you are planning to show this dog, it is NOT a good candidate for the show ring! Look at the nails. If they are white, the dog is lacking in pigment, and will likely fade as it gets older. If they are black and look like they've been dipped in India ink, it will be okay. Here's my pup at 8 weeks: and here's what she looks like now: by GSD Lineage on 02 April - Here is a nice pup. You can have a large blanket and white feet. Look at the parents! Eila vom Mecklenburger Bolz Goergeous pup. A German Shepherd can have natural white patches on them as a puppy that usually disappear into adulthood. Adult dogs might get white patches due to vitiligo, health problems, natural aging, or premature aging caused by stress or genetics. To learn more about German Shepherds and why these white patches might occur, keep reading! German Shepherds are typically bred to have little to no white patches in their coats. This is because they were bred to be animal herders, and only the darker dogs could intimidate the other animals into moving. A dark-furred German Shepherd can have white markings, but this is only an indicator of a breeding fault instead of anything more insidious. That particular German Shepherd has the recessive white gene in its DNA, passed down from one of the parents. If your German Shepherd has a white spot on its chest or paws, but is only a puppy, the spot will likely fade as it gets older. Even if this does not happen, as long as your dog has been registered with the American Kennel Club AKC as purebred, having or not having a white spot does not make it any less of a purebred. If the white spotting is extreme, you might have what is known as a Panda German Shepherd. This is caused by a mutated KIT gene. All-white German Shepherds also do exist, but they are rarer to find. As a result, all-white puppies are usually more expensive than the working kind. These dogs are usually bred from all-white parents or one all-white and one non-all-white with the recessive white gene. An all-white needs to inherit the white gene from both of the parents. That also takes all the health risks associated with albino dogs out of the equation. There is no difference between an all-white, a black dog, or a dog with white spots other than the coat color and, in some cases, hair length. Instead of fixating on coat color, you should be ensuring that your breeder is responsible and does health tests on dogs because some breeders overlook health issues to get the perfect coat color. As your dog gets older and older, those gray hairs will turn whiter. Stress It is common knowledge that stress in humans can cause hair to turn gray faster than usual. It is hypothesized that stress prematurely triggers the graying process — where either aging prevents the production of melanin , the chemical which keeps your skin and hair at the natural color it is, or your hair gets bleached from within via hydrogen peroxide. According to a study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science , anxiety or stress can replicate this process in dogs. If your dog displays anxiety or impulsivity in the form of the symptoms below, take note.

In fact over millions of years, magnetic north wanders considerably and occasionally reverses so that the magnetic north pole has been near the geographic south pole at some periods in the earth's history. In the arctic region, a magnetic compass is not very useful. In life's journey we are often uncertain where we stand, where we are going and what is the right path for us personally. These traits make Goldmation a perfect mix between a friendly companion dog and the ever-alert watchdog dog. Physical Appearance Size Goldmation is a mid-sized breed. The average height of a Goldmation is between 19 and 23 inches. A Goldmation will typically weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. Coat Generally, the Goldmation coat is straight, medium to long, and dense with some iconic spots inherited from the Dalmatian lineage. Therefore, expect your Goldmation to shed a lot, especially during the spring and autumn. You will need to brush your dog at least three times a week to prevent tangling and matting. Nose The nose is black as in the parent breeds. Photo credit: Pinterest Personality Goldmation is a very intelligent, loyal, and friendly dog. These dogs are perfect for active families with kids of all ages due to their energy, kindness, and willingness to play. Goldmation is also capable of protecting his owner. This is where his Dalmatian watchdog side comes into play. You will often see a Goldmation barking at strangers. Goldmations are intelligent dogs, that are willing to please their owners. Therefore, they are quick learners and easy to train. However, high intelligence and social nature also mean they need plenty of mental stimulants, interactions, and challenges to prevent boredom. A bored Goldmation will indulge in a wide variety of unwanted behaviors. The most notable and problematic are barking, howling, and destructive chewing. Health Problems Designer breeds will often be free of the health issues that often plague their purebred parents. However, there is always a possibility that a dog will inherit certain health issues from its parents. Generally, Goldmations are healthy dogs. However, they can inherit a susceptibility to cancers and heart issues from the Golden Retriever side. On the other hand, Dalmatians are prone to deafness, kidney stones , and thyroid issues. Both Goldens and Dalmatians are prone to joint issues such as elbow and hip dysplasia. Therefore, there is a high probability that their offspring will suffer from the same issues. Life Expectancy Researchers have shown that larger dog breeds have a shorter life span than smaller ones. Since Goldmations are large dogs, their life expectancy is on average between 10 and 12 years. Your dog can live above or below this line based on genetics, the way you care about him, and his lifestyle. Therefore, your Goldmation will need plenty of walks, exercise, and agility training to spend that energy and stay healthy. Conclusion Dalmatian Golden Retriever mix or Goldmation is a designer breed perfect for the role of a companion dog. Goldmations excel in active families with children, where they will get enough attention and playtime. So, if you are an outgoing, active person the Goldmation is a perfect dog for you. On the other hand, if you are a couch potato, Goldmation may not be the best choice. People Also Ask How much does a Goldmation puppy cost? Are Goldmations good watchdogs? Goldmations are capable watchdogs and will alert their owners if a stranger is approaching their home. My faithful companion, Toby, is a Corgi who means the world to me. I'm passionate about building strong bonds with dogs and providing them with all the love and care they deserve. Designer dogs, however, became quite popular in the United States in the s. The golden retriever dalmatian is thought to be one of the first hybrids developed. These designer dogs come from a long lineage of popular established breeds — the Dalmatian and the Golden Retrieve. Golden Retrievers were bred in Scotland in the mids. Their main task was to retrieve downed game from water or land for their hunter-owners. They came to the United States via Canada in .Dalmatians got their name from Dalmatia, a region in Croatia. These dogs have existed in Asia, Africa, and other areas of Europe since ancient times. Throughout history, dalmatians have been guarding sheep, trained to hunt, and were retrievers, performers, and guard dogs running alongside coaches protecting the horses and passengers. Their appearance depends on genetics! However, we do know that this is one adorable breed. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian is a medium to large-sized dog with a well-proportioned body. They usually have a long snout, a somewhat curved tail, and droopy ears. The adult Goldmatian is generally between 19 to 23 inches tall and weighs between 55 to 70 pounds. Their eyes are usually brown or blue, and they have black noses. As mentioned above, it is hard to say precisely what the golden retriever dalmatian will look like. Some are a perfect blend of both parental breeds. This pattern may be clearly visible and distinct, or it can be faint and subtle with just a tinge of the spots on their lighter coat. You never know — up to genetics! But in any case, the Goldmatian is just one of the cutest, most adorable designer dogs you could ever want! This breed will do well with single pet parents or with families. The important thing is that their family is active. This breed is best suited for people with a home with a fenced-in yard for them to run around safely. This is a very active breed with tons of energy; they need lots of exercise to use up all that energy. Also note this designer dog has a high prey drive, and they have a tendency to chase small critters. Therefore, it is crucial to keep this dog on a leash when taking them out for a walk. They LOVE to be with their human family and even get along famously with other dogs in the household. They are fantastic family dogs and get along wonderfully with children of all ages. Goldmatians do not like to be alone. Since this dog is a part golden retriever, they love to be around people. Therefore, they might not be an excellent fit for a family if they will be left alone for long periods of time. Left alone for long periods can lead to destructive behavior, including chewing on things and excessive barking. I know first-hand about separation anxiety with Golden Retrieves. We have a golden mix, and we left him home for less than an hour to run an errand. We lived at the time in a two-bedroom apartment, and we crate-train our dog as a puppy. He was three years old at the time and no longer confined to a crate when we left our home. Who knew that while we were gone, a kid would pull the fire alarm, and the fire department would pull up just as we were returning to our apartment? The alarm was a constant high shriek sound right outside our apartment. Our golden mix was terrified. He chewed a HUGE hole in an oriental carpet my husband had brought back from India while on a business trip! Needless to say, my husband was furious. But who could be upset with our pet? Separation anxiety is real among goldens, and when they become scared, they become destructive. Lesson learned. However, you must put the time into crate training your Goldmatian puppy. And notice I said puppy — it would be next to impossible to retrain an older dog. This will be discussed further along in this article. Another option if you have your heart set on this breed and must leave the house for long periods of time is doggie daycare. Doggie daycare is also an excellent option for your pet to learn socialization skills and how to interact with other people and dogs. Both of the parental breeds of the golden retriever dalmatian are very intelligent, which could make training your Goldmatian challenging since they tend to be a tad bit stubborn. Be consistent with your training and reinforce that YOU are the alpha dog, and your Goldmatian should obey. Remember always to praise and reward when they follow your instructions. There is nothing more satisfying to these dogs than to please their owner. Both of their parental breeds are shedders, so there is no way around this. To keep their coats shiny and looking good, they should be brushed twice a week at a minimum. This will also help prevent tangles and matting from occurring, especially during the two main shedding seasons in spring and fall. In fact, you might feel as though your pet is shedding so much that they will go bald during these times. But have no fear; this is normal. What about bathing? This breed is known to be droolers, and they are very active. Because of their drooling, they can develop a doggy odor, and when this happens, you know it is time for a bath. Usually, baths are needed once amount. Only do this occasionally, as they can dry out their skin. To reduce the doggy odor caused by their excessive drooling, you might find it beneficial to put some towels or lightweight blankets on top of their bedding. Before these start to become smelly, you can toss them in the washer, and this will help keep your Goldmatian smelling fresher longer. Also, make sure you check their ears, nails, and teeth several times a month, preferably weekly. Their ears should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth once a week, which helps prevent the smelly yeast infection that droopy-eared dogs are prone to. You can time this cleaning to coincide with their regular brushing routine, and your pet will think they spent some time at the spa! This also makes a great bonding experience between you and your pet. Their teeth should be cleaned at least once a week. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix comes from two very bright parental dogs. Patience is definitely needed here, and you must understand you will never stop their barking; it is only natural to them. Your goal is to control their barking. As mentioned before, Goldmatians are extremely intelligent. One would guess that would mean they are easy to train, and usually, they are, especially since they love to please their owner. However, sometimes they can and do have a strong, stubborn manner. As with both of their parental breeds, the golden retriever dalmatian loves praise and is rewarded for listening and following commands. Therefore, it is essential with training to take a positive approach and give them tons of verbal encouragement, plus a few tasty yummy treats when they have learned and responded appropriately to your instructions. The key to practical training is to be consistent, firm, and fair. Remember, as stated before, socialization is also an essential part of training. Because these dogs are so agile and physically active, they love a physical challenge. They will do well with agility training and other dog sports. In addition, these activities will help tire your dog out. Because these dogs are so intelligent, they will also benefit from mental stimulation training. Here are some examples of mental training to do with your Goldmatian: Interactive Games: such as doggie board games where your dog must complete some obstacles to get a treat or puzzle games where your pet is encouraged to figure out how to get a treat out Hide and seek: tell your dog to sit and stay this is assuming they know these two commands already , and you go and hide and then count to ten and call your dog. Once they find you give them tons of praise and a treat. Playing fetch: this simple activity provides both physical and mental stimulation, and most dogs LOVE playing this game with their owners. Puzzle games: a simple one is a Kong. With a Kong, you fill it with a treat, and your pet must lick, sniff, and shake to dislodge the treat to eat it. And lastly, do not forget crate training. This is very important on so many levels for your dog, no matter their breed. Their crate should be their happy place, a place to sleep, a place to be safe. If you must leave your Goldmatian for extended periods of time, and they have been appropriately crate-trained, their crate becomes a safe place to be while you are away and will keep them safe and out of trouble. If you need to be away for an extended period of time, and your Goldmatian needs to be in their crate, throw in a safe toy like a Kong filled with all-natural peanut butter make sure it does not contain artificial sweeteners as these are deadly to your dog and play some calming pet music. Also remember to provide water. A dispenser that hangs on the side of the crate is an excellent way to keep them hydrated. Once you return, make sure to immediately let your pet out of the crate, praise them, and then take them for a nice long walk to use up their pent-up energy. When you are home, leave their crate door open, and let them wander in and out of their crate at will. The Goldmatian is a high-energy and intelligent breed that needs physical and mental stimulation daily. At a minimum, Goldmatians should get approximately 75 minutes a day of exercise, and at least half of that should be focused and intense. This breed is highly athletic, so you can do various things to meet this daily requirement. You can take them on multiple daily walks, take them running with you, hiking, or swimming. Take them to a dog park to interact with other dogs. Do agility training. If walking is your main go-to activity with them, change your routes and walk at least two miles daily with them. Provide a safe, enclosed backyard space for them to play and explore safely. Please do not leave them alone outside for long, though, or their inquisitive nature might get them into too much trouble! It would be best if you still look for genetic disorders that are more common for Golden Retrievers and Dalmatians. Some minor conditions to be aware of include: Eye Entropion. The breed is a beloved pet in some areas, while others rarely have any around. It is essential to try and find a high-quality breeder who treats their dogs well. It is best to ask for a tour around their facility to ensure that they are the kind of breeder whom you want to support the adoption. They should be willing to show you around any area in which they allow their dogs. Ask to see the veterinary records for the dogs too. It will help you be more prepared as your pup grows older and you can keep an eye out for potential inherited diseases. The Dalmatian is thought to be a mysterious breed because their history is relatively unknown. The Dalmatian is a unique-looking breed that has gone through a large range of popularity in North America. They originally hail from the country of Dalmatia, which was in the Mediterranean. It is part of Croatia and is a region along the sea and some islands in the Adriatic Sea. Most people do not know much about the Dalmatian beyond what they seem to be in the movies. They are most noteworthy for their athleticism. They are an agile breed that can build up quite a bit of speed and endurance. Dalmatians have always been hard workers and have been used in a wide variety of roles. They have been hunters, war dogs, herding pups, protectors, and draft dogs. They are primarily known as being a companion to firefighters nowadays because they are extremely loyal and fearless. Their popularity has ranged. When they were first introduced to America, they quickly grew in popularity because they looked so unique. However, in the s, more and more breeds started making their way to American shores, and the Dalmatian became less popular. Dalmatians need plenty of time with their family or caretakers. They bond strongly and cannot be left alone for long at all. They are also active and need quite plenty of daily activity to stay well behaved. Golden Retrievers originally come from Scotland. Golden Retrievers have remained one of the most popular breeds in North America for many years. Most of this is because of their charming personality and laidback characteristics. These beautiful dogs originate from Scotland, having been bred by Lord Tweddmouth in the s. He was a viscount who ended up adopting a dog named Nous. This puppy was young and yellow and had wavy hair all over. Interestingly, Nous came from a litter of black puppies. Lord Tweedmouth began to breed Nous by crossing the dog with a Tweed Water Spaniel, a breed that has since become extinct. The AKC recognized the Golden Retriever in , and they currently rank number three in overall popularity compared to the other breeds recognized by the AKC now. Goldmatians, like any hybrid, is a mix of both of their parents. Both the Golden Retriever and the Dalmatian are devoted dogs who need plenty of time with their family. The Goldmatian inherits all of this and requires plenty of time spent with their humans. They are not incredibly hyper dogs, but they do need plenty of activity to stay satisfied from day to day. They can be quite rambunctious, especially as puppies. These dogs are brilliant, inheriting smarts from both sides of the family. This intelligence can make them somewhat difficult to train if they decide to be stubborn. It can also get them into trouble if they are left to their own devices for too long. Are Goldmatians Good for Families? Dalmatian Golden Retriever Mixes are gentle-natured and quickly learn where it is appropriate to be rambunctious and where it is best to remain calm. If they are socialized early on, they will do well around both kids and adults. Around strangers, they will bark loudly but typically behave in a non-aggressive manner. They need to receive socialization early on to understand how to behave well around other animals. They like to play around and have fun, so they often do better in a home with more than one dog. Around other animals, such as cats or rodents, observe them because they have a higher prey drive. Goldmation, or the Goldmatian is a hybrid of two smart and sweet dogs. It is feasible to provide a balanced diet for your French Bulldogs if you use the best store-bought or homemade dog food that contains all the nutrition needed by your dog and as prescribed by your veterinarian. The list below shows the best dog food options you can provide your French Bulldog: Dry Food: Dry dog food is commercially available kibble. This can be an excellent alternative for French Bulldogs with sensitive stomachs. French Bulldog puppies require high-quality dry food that is high in animal protein to aid in growth and muscular development. Wet Food: Wet food is contained in a can; it is primarily composed of water and is considered highly mushy food. However, wet food expires more quickly than dry food, making it the least practical alternative. Home-Cooked Diet: A home-cooked, protein-rich diet like a chicken meal is excellent for French Bulldogs. Unlike ordinary kibble, it contains no additives or preservatives. It supports healthy digestion and may help avoid various problems related to a bad diet, including obesity, dry skin and coat, pancreatitis, diabetes, and a low immune system. French Bulldogs are prone to developing a variety of joint and back issues. Along with other joint problems, they may develop luxating patella or hip dysplasia. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are critical components of a high-quality French Bulldog dog diet. These essential vitamins assist your French in developing the connective tissue necessary for healthy joints and spine support. Omega-3 fatty acids can assist your Frenchie to keep muscle mass and strength by reducing inflammation and soreness. Also, this can promote healthy skin by preventing itchy and flaky skin. Whether wet and dry food, raw food, or a homemade diet, each dog food offers several benefits and drawbacks. Consult a veterinarian before deciding to know exactly what food option suits your Frenchie. Any French Bulldog owner will attest that vomiting is far more common in this breed than in other dogs. While it cannot be totally prevented, you should know what human foods are toxic to French Bulldogs. Some of the foods to avoid are not only bad for Frenchie; many of them can be fatal. They may result in poisoning and, in the worst-case scenario, death. This section enumerates some of the most dangerous foods for French Bulldogs. I will discuss why these foods are poisonous and when you should contact a veterinarian. The first and most prevalent is chocolate. It contains a toxin called theobromine , which can cause a variety of health problems when consumed in large amounts. This can cause irregular heartbeats, seizures, and sudden death. Garlic and onions should also never be included in the diet of your Frenchie puppy or adult dog. Even a trace of these vegetables can result in anemia and red blood cell failure in your pup. Poisoning symptoms include lethargy, fatigue, vomiting, rapid breathing, and an increased heart rate. However, remember that you may not immediately notice poisoning symptoms because the toxic consequences may take a few days to manifest. Additionally, grapes are one of the most toxic foods for your Frenchie. A dog that has consumed grapes may exhibit stomach bloating and diarrhea. They need to be taken to a veterinarian immediately. In severe cases, gastric lavage is the best course of action. Candy, artificial sweeteners, corn on the cob, roasted bones, avocado, raisins, almonds, cherry, peach, plum, coconut oil, mustard seeds, alcohol, coffee, blue cheese, and tomatoes are also regarded to be unsafe for French Bulldogs. Furthermore, there are certain foods that you should avoid giving your Pitbull owing to the negative side effects they may cause. While they are not considered dangerous, they can cause nausea, diarrhea, and weight gain. Numerous dogs wind up at veterinarian clinics due to improper food intake. While prevention is always the best course of action, it is critical to understand emergency care and medication expenses. Read our article on French Bulldog costs to learn more about the medical expenditures associated with a French Bulldog. These adjustments should ideally take place over 5 to 7 days. Consult a veterinarian in this scenario, especially if you intend to switch to a raw or homemade diet. Feeding an Overweight French Bulldog French Bulldogs can quickly gain weight, resulting in various health problems. Thus, dog owners need to notice when their Frenchie gets overweight to assist the dog in maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy life. Average adult French Bulldogs should have a body weight between 19 and 29 pounds for males, while 18 to 28 pounds for females. The most common indications that your Frenchie is overweight include lack of muscle definition and difficulty breathing during brief exercises. In terms of visual indicators, a Frenchie within their healthy weight will have a thin layer of fat covering their ribs. Meanwhile, those with excess fat have noticeable deposits in the chest and stomach area. Also, you should be able to see and feel their spine as they bend and curl into a sleeping position. Furthermore, Frenchies have an hourglass form, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest when they are not overweight. Regardless of these symptoms, it is always advisable to seek confirmation from a professional veterinarian. Feeding an obese Frenchie means maintaining a consistent food plan throughout the day to aid in weight loss. Additionally, this stops your dog from eating more than it requires. Apart from planned feeding times, serving the correct meal proportions is essential. If your Frenchie is overweight, owners should focus on how much food is offered to them. Reducing their daily kibble intake by half a cup can help them significantly reduce weight. Moreover, you should offer them foods with fewer calories, more fiber, and more protein. As a result, your Frenchie will burn more calories and lose weight more quickly. It is preferable to give your dog treats that contain only one ingredient, are low in calories, and contain no added sugar, such as sweet potato and blueberry bites. Alternatively, you can treat your dog with items that are already in your refrigerator, such as tiny portions of sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas. Regularly weigh your dog, monitor how many calories they intake, and establish a target body weight for them. Also, pain can make a Frenchie nervous and unable to eat, so keep an eye out for evident signs of injury. Another common reason for your French Bulldog not to eat is discomfort in the mouth caused by dental issues. Furthermore, gastrointestinal conditions, certain medicines, vaccination, overfeeding, or other serious health problems can cause a French Bulldog not to eat. As a result, you must keep an eye on your Frenchie and contact your veterinarian if the condition persists for weeks. Do French Bulldogs Eat a Lot? French Bulldogs are opportunistic feeders by nature. Thus, they will continue to eat as long as you provide pet food. They may begin to require more than is necessary to fulfill their appetite due to this behavior. Also, when a French Bulldog is agitated, it may begin to overeat. The most effective strategy to combat stress-related overeating is to thrive in a calm environment. At times, your dog may become bored and eat more than usual to keep itself occupied somehow. Thus, you must keep a watch on any of these factors. Can French Bulldogs Eat Bones? Dogs should not consume cooked bones of any kind. The bones may splinter, resulting in deadly shards that might cause injury due to choking hazards. Thus, if you wish to offer your Frenchie a bone, vets recommend raw meat bones, preferably from farm-raised chicken. These are best given after a meal to prevent them from eating too much. Remove it after around ten minutes and store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for tomorrow. To avoid bacterial contamination, it is recommended to discard it after a few days and keep it separate from other raw meat and food. Can French Bulldogs Be Vegetarians? Each Frenchie is one-of-a-kind. Simply because your French Bulldog likes veggies does not mean it can go full-on vegetarian. Also, bear in mind that many veggies are dangerous and toxic to your French Bulldog. Certain vegetables are acceptable to be fed to a French Bulldog, but only in small portions. Final Thoughts French Bulldogs are, without a doubt, playful, intelligent, and compassionate dogs. On the other hand, Frenchies are greedy eaters, and food serves as their primary motivator. Thus, a critical component of owning this breed is understanding how much, how frequently, and what food to feed a French Bulldog. You can supply dry food, wet food, raw food diets, or a homemade diet for your pet. Since Frenchie pups and adults may have food sensitivities, providing or making the best dog food for their age and nutritional requirements is critical. By doing so, you can help your Frenchie prevent undesirable health problems. This can help guarantee that your Frenchie receives the safest and healthiest diet as much as possible. Diarrhea Stomach upsets are very common in Frenchies, so monitoring their diet is absolutely essential. Signs of a digestion problem include wet, runny, and loose stools. If a food allergy is suspected, the only treatment is an elimination diet. As a result, you will need to watch out for any food sensitivities your dog has. Reflux Flat-faced breeds such as Frenchies can suffer from reflux or struggle to swallow their food. You will need to monitor this when it comes to giving them their food. Dental Problems Flat-faced dogs often have crowded teeth which, in turn, can cause dental problems when it comes to chewing. While some French Bulldogs are hyperactive, others are lazy and love nothing more than lying on the couch all day. As your French Bulldog edges closer to adolescence, the amount of exercise they need will increase. Around 60 minutes of daily exercise split into two walks is plenty for your fully grown French Bulldog. As a result, too much exercise can even be bad for French Bulldogs. As a flat-faced breed, French Bulldogs can overheat and struggle to breathe and pant, especially in warmer weather. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome BOAS is a condition that can cause severe breathing problems and is caused by their shorter faces. As a result, you should make sure that you take precautions to keep your dog cool and make sure that you understand the signs of heatstroke in dogs. Consult With Your Vet Above all else, consulting with your vet should be your first port of call when bringing home your new puppy. Invest In A Slow Feed Dog Bowl A slow feeding bowl is a useful dog bowl to have as they are designed with ridges or grooves which are designed to slow your dog down when they are eating. However, some treats contain high amounts of sugar, colourings, milk products and fat. As a result, you will need to make sure that you choose your treats carefully and use them wisely, as failure to do so can quickly result in your puppy becoming overweight. The moisture in wet food reduces the risk of urinary infections and other related issues while your puppy is still getting used to drinking water. As a result, it costs more to feed your dog, even if you are buying the product in bulk for a cheaper price. Wet dog food cannot be left in a bowl for hours on end, and it can be messier. As a result, people often consider wet dog food less convenient to feed their dog and store. Dry Dog Food Benefits Cheaper Dry dog foods are affordable and are incredibly easy to store for longer periods of time, meaning that they have a longer shelf life than wet foods. Dry kibble is excellent for getting rid of plaque build-up in the process of your dog chewing crunchy, dry kibble. However, despite the lack of hydration this dog food provides. Your French Bulldog puppy requires high-quality dog food that provides everything it needs to meet its requirements and ensure healthy development. In Summary Generally speaking, you should be feeding your French Bulldog puppy 1. You can always supplement a few treats in between. Wink wink. A half a cup at a time will make sure your Frenchie is pleasantly tubby and happy. Some days, it seems like a French Bulldog can never get enough food. This seemingly natural hunger is relative to the breed and you should be weary of overfeeding your French Bulldog. Monitor your Frenchie as she eats and make sure she only eats her own food, especially if you feed your French Bulldog near other pets. Note that non-neutered males may grow into the low 30lb range. Always consult a vet. Ideally, 2. This sort of consult is always quick and cheap sometimes free and you owe it to your companion to get the opinion of an expert veterinarian. Overweight Frenchies can suffer from some very severe health problems, including heart disease just like humans , labored breathing, and lack of physical exercise. Never take a French Bulldog out to play in sweltering heat, they can die. Generally, older French Bulldogs will require slightly less food than their young counterparts. However, do not restrict food from your French Bulldog if they appear to be underweight or hungry. A reader pointed out in the comments below that these calculations would put french bulldogs in the 40lbs range somewhere around calories per day. This is obviously an outlier situation and no french bulldog needs that many calories. This means feeding your french bulldog less food as they age. If they look thinner than usual, you can move up by 5 calories per pound of weight until you find a magic number. No french bulldog is identical and our suggestions are based on average weights computed to a mean average calorie intake suggestion. Read: I use this calculator and a pad of paper. GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. Interested applicants should expect these puppies to be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality… to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. We are excited these pups will finally get to know what a nice soft bed, in a warm and cozy home with a loving family is all about!

In , the Phylax Society was formed to help the standardization process, but in-fighting over whether the dog should be cute or hard working led to the demise of this group after only three years of operation. Cherry eye Unlike us humans, our dogs have 3 instead of 2 eyelids and under that third eyelid is the nictitans gland. Though this condition does not require an emergency trip to the vet, if not addressed, a prolapsed nictitans gland reduces tear production and dry eyes. Severe cases can cause blindness. Epilepsy This is a neurological problem wherein the exact cause is hard to identify. There is no cure, instead, medications and a change to a vet-prescribed diet can help reduce the frequency and severity of the seizures. Skin infections Skin problems arising from ticks , fleas, food, or a sudden change in temperature may cause some dogs to suffer from skin allergies. The symptoms are itching, reddening of the skin, or hair loss. Hip dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition that results from a hip deformity. Blame it on genetics, big dogs such as a German Shepherd is susceptible to this condition. One of the causes is playing around after eating a large amount of food. This requires an emergency trip to the vet. If not, a dog can die from a bloated stomach. Canine degenerative myelopathy Canine degenerative myelopathy is a disease that is caused by the breaking down of white matter in the spinal cord. This results in weakness and eventually paralysis. It commonly affects older dogs. The first few symptoms are wobbling and pain while getting up. Osteosarcoma Osteosarcoma in dogs is a very painful bone tumor in dogs. It is more commonly found among larger dog breeds rather than small dog breeds. Elbow dysplasia This disease is also a developmental abnormality where the three bones in the elbow joint fail to fit together. This is more common among larger dog breeds. Cataract Aside from age, canine cataracts can also be caused by an eye lens disease, diabetes, or nutritional deficiency. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix lifespan If you provide your German Shepherd Greyhound Mix with proper nutrition, exercise, and regular trips to the vet for wellness exams, you can enjoy their company and companionship for an average of 9 to 14 years. GSD-Greyhound mix puppies can inherit either of the two coat types and so their appearance will greatly depend on which parent they take after. Apart from length and texture, the coat color could also be one of a great number of possibilities. Given all these possibilities, German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses tend to look vastly different from one another. Typically, all they need is a weekly rubdown using a hound glove or a damp cloth. In contrast, those that take their coats after their German Shepherd side have double coats that shed steadily throughout the year and then more heavily twice a year. GSDs need to be brushed at least once a week, but more frequently during the shedding season. As for the rest of their grooming requirements, a Greyhound-German Shepherd mix will need regular bathing and frequent tooth brushing. Strength Even though Greyhounds are not particularly known for its strength, its offspring with a GSD will undoubtedly be a strong dog. This is not just because of its size but also because it can take its strength after its German Shepherd parent. Additionally, its size alone can make it capable of developing great strength. GSD-Greyhound crosses are expected to run somewhere between those speeds. Exercise Requirement Because German Shepherds are incredibly energetic and Greyhounds even more so, you should be ready to give the Greyhound GSD mix plenty of opportunities to exercise. Ideally, they would get at least an hour of physical exercise per day apart from having access to ample space where they can run and play independently. Apart from physical exercise, the GSD-Greyhound cross needs opportunities to use their mental faculties so that they stay on their best behavior. They need toys and activities that stimulate their brains. Generally, this need can be met through regular training exercises. Nevertheless, what they lack in intelligence, they make up for in their eagerness to please their humans. The trainability of a Greyhound German Shepherd mix will depend on which parent they take after. Although the intellect of GSD-Greyhound mixes can vary greatly, you can at least expect them to be easily housetrained and learn basic obedience with ease. Temperament German Shepherd-Greyhound crosses are confident and courageous dogs. With proper training and socialization, they can be excellent family dogs. However, because of the prey drive they might inherit from their Greyhound parent, they might need extra training and supervision if they need to share a home with smaller animals. Additionally, Greyhound-GSDs are generally even-tempered and they are known to be gentle with their family members. Health German Shepherd-Greyhound mixes are generally healthy, although they are susceptible to life-threatening bloat. Owners of this crossbreed should talk to a vet about how to avoid this condition. Additionally, hip and elbow dysplasia are conditions that the German Shepherd-Greyhound cross can inherit from their GSD parent. From the Greyhound side, the most serious health concern is a genetic condition called Greyhound Polyneuropathy. This is a progressive neurological disorder that severely affects their muscles. Lifespan A Greyhound-German Shepherd mix can be expected to live between 10 and 14 years. Like all other dogs, they can live beyond the life expectancy of their parents when they are given a balanced, high-quality diet. Ample exercise, proper hygiene, and regular vet examinations will further enable them to lead long and happy lives. By enrolling in this program, dogs that are not eligible for purebred registration and are disqualified from conformation events can participate in many other AKC events. These include canine sports like Agility , Flyball , and Diving Dogs. The GSD Greyhound mix is not very common. So, professional breeders do not have enough financial incentive to propagate this cross. Final Thoughts A Greyhound German Shepherd mix is undeniably a beautiful dog with a noble quality and a pleasing personality. Nevertheless, it is a large dog with boundless energy. As we have established, this crossbreed is a mix between a German Shepherd and a Greyhound. They are both large breeds of dog, so as you would expect, the result of this cross-breeding is also a big dog. These terms are used interchangeably to describe this crossbreed. As these dogs are a mix, no two puppies will be the same. This is because it is impossible to know what personality traits and characteristics will be taken from each breed, making every dog different. Despite this, there are a few things that you can expect from this crossbreed. The main one being its size. You can generally determine the size that a litter of puppies will grow to by looking at the parents. As both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are large breed dogs, you can rest assured that the puppies will also be large. You can also expect them to be muscular, affectionate, and loyal. Is this the right mixed breed for You? Before you welcome any dog into your home, you need to decide if this is the right breed for you. Here are some of the key things that you need to consider before making that decision: Time One of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a Shephound, or any dog for that matter, is if you have the time to dedicate to this dog. Dogs are hard work, and they require a lot of time and effort if you want them to be well-behaved and loyal. This is especially important with Shephounds as both the Greyhound and German Shepherd breeds can be nervous at times. A lot of this is down to the fact that both breeds have been treated badly historically. A lot of Greyhounds are traumatized from a history of being forced to race against their will, and because of this, it can take a lot of time for these dogs to adjust to being family pets. Likewise, a lot of German Shepherds have lived their lives as working dogs, so it can take a little while for them to adjust to being pets too. You should bear this in mind when buying a Shephound. Space Another major thing that you need to consider before bringing a Shephound into your home is whether, or not, you have the space for a dog of this size. While they may be small when they are puppies, these puppies quickly grow into large dogs, so it is very important that you have enough space in your home for them. Nothing can prepare you for quite how big these dogs are, and as they grow in your home, they can quickly shrink your house. But, these dogs are large and heavy, so they take up a lot of space. If you only have a small house, or you have a large but busy house, then you might want to consider if you have the physical space to give to this dog before bringing one home. Professional Training Finally, you need to consider your provisions for giving this breed professional dog training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, so they will require training. Both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often have a very high prey drive , and this can make them very difficult to control when you are out walking them. This can be very difficult to do, which is why you should ensure that you have access to a professional trainer to help you. But, as both Greyhounds and German Shepherds are breeds that have existed for centuries, there are lots of facts that we know about these dogs. Without a doubt, German Shepherds are one of the most striking dog breeds in the world. With just a single look, you can easily identify one of these breeds by their classic black and tan markings, wonderful gait, and simply breathtaking look. They are famous for being one of the most loyal dog breeds to exist and are also well-known for being fiercely protective of their owner and their pack. These dogs absolutely adore being outdoors, and this is one of the main reasons why they make such wonderful herding dogs. This is, after all, where their name comes from. Instead, they are better known for being used as working dogs in the military, police , and even as support dogs for people who are blind or living with other disabilities. The main reason why these dogs are so commonly used as working dogs is that they are so easy to train. German Shepherds are undoubtedly one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. Anyone who has ever owned a German Shepherd will tell you that this breed can learn a trick after only one or two goes, they simply are that smart. They are affectionate, loyal, and kind. They really do make the perfect companion, and you know that you are never alone as long as you have a German Shepherd by your side. These dogs are energetic and healthy, and absolutely wonderful with children and other pets. This is why they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of similarities between these two breeds, and this is why this crossbreed works so well. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are also a large breed of dog. In terms of height, they are very similar, but Greyhounds are a lot thinner than German Shepherds. As Greyhounds were bred to run, they are extremely skinny, to the point where you can often see their ribs. While German Shepherd dogs are bred to be a lot bulkier. Yes, Greyhounds do look very slim, but this is because they carry absolutely zero body fat. Just by looking at a Greyhound, you can see how muscular they are, and this is partly aided by the fact that they have a very short coat. Greyhounds are most famous for being fast. These dogs have been racing dogs, and unfortunately, this practice still goes on today. Due to the shape of their body, Greyhounds are able to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, which is why they have been used in racing. But traditionally, Greyhounds were bred as hunting dogs with the ability to hunt foxes, rabbits, and even deer. They are unbelievably calm, and will spend a lot of their time sleeping. Just like German Shepherds, Greyhounds are incredibly loving, and there is nothing that this breed likes more than cuddling up to their owner and giving them lots of wet kisses. While they will be loving to all members of their pack, Greyhounds tend to choose one member to be their person, and if that person is you then you are truly blessed. They are incredibly smart, and as long as they are trained, then these dogs will not become aggressive. This is why they make such wonderful pets. Key Characteristics of the German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Shephound We have looked at these breeds independently, but it is time that we look at them together. Every Shephound is different as it is a crossbreed, however, there are some key characteristics that you can expect. One is the fact that your puppy is going to have a lot of growing to do. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are breeds that transform a lot during the first 6 months of their life. So, this makes it difficult to tell what their coat is going to look like when they grow up. It is also partly because these two breeds have very different coats. German Shepherds have incredibly thick fur, with multiple different layers, while Greyhounds have very thin coats which help make them more aerodynamic. Due to this, it is impossible to tell exactly what your Shephounds coat is going to be. If your Shephound is a mixture of a short coat German Shepherd and a Greyhound, then you can expect the fur to be mid-way between the two. However, if your Shephound is part long-hair German Shepherd, then there is no knowing just how thick their coat will be. Gentle Something that you can almost guarantee from a Shephound is that they are going to be gentle. Both German Shepherds and Greyhounds are docile breeds, and they are well-known for being gentle around their owners. So, this is something that you can expect from a Shephound. But, these dogs will have moments of madness. While these dogs will be calm and gentle most of the time, there will be periods where they will be hyper. When this happens, it is important to remember that Shephounds are big dogs, and they are incredibly strong. Loyal But there is one thing which you can definitely guarantee from a Shephound, and it is their undying loyalty. So, whether you are looking for a Shephound as a guard dog or a companion, you can always trust your Shephound to be by your side. However, if you are looking for a dog to use as a guard dog, then a Shephound might not be the best choice. You would be much better off choosing a pedigree German Shepherd. But if you want a dog that has your back until the end, then a Shephound is absolutely perfect. All dogs suffer from health conditions, and the majority of breeds will have genetic predispositions to certain issues. Joint Problems The most prevalent potential health condition that your Shephound might suffer from is joint problems. In particular, hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a genetic condition where there is a deformity in the hip or the elbow, which can lead to limited mobility and arthritis as your dog ages. This is a common health issue for both German Shepherds and Greyhounds, which is why this is the condition that your dog is most likely to suffer from. In fact, this is a condition that most large dogs, and even large cats, suffer with. This condition is a degenerative disease, so the earlier that you pick up on it, the better. That way, you can treat it early and prevent your Shephound from suffering too greatly with this condition. Skin Conditions Another part of the body that both Greyhounds and German Shepherds often suffer with is their skin. Both breeds are genetically predisposed to skin conditions, so there is a fair chance that your Shephound could suffer from this too. In particular, German Shepherds are prone to allergies, which can lead to a lot of scratching and discomfort. Cherry Eye Something else that these breeds are often prone to suffering with is cherry eye. This condition displays itself as a red lump on the third eyelid. This red lump is actually an enlarged and swollen gland that has become infected due to allergies. All dogs are at risk of experiencing this, and it is a very common condition. So, just be prepared that you might have to go to your vet to get conditions like this treated if you get a German Shepherd Greyhound mix. Epilepsy The final condition that your Shephound might be prone to is epilepsy. This is a condition that a lot of Greyhounds develop, so there is a small chance that your Shephound may also suffer from this. Epilepsy affects dogs similarly to how it affects humans, so if your Greyhound Shepherd develops this condition, then they may experience seizures. Dogs can experience seizures with lots of different causes behind it. Some dogs will fit if they become too hot, or dehydrated. But, these seizures could be caused by a health condition such as epilepsy or diabetes. So, you should be prepared that this condition could also develop in your Shephound. If your German Shepherd Greyhound mix does begin to experience seizures, then you should seek veterinary advice immediately. German Shepherd Greyhound Mix Temperament One of the biggest influences on whether you will choose a dog breed, or not, is temperament. Everybody wants their dog to have a good temperament, and for their dog to be loving. This is why a lot of people purchase dogs based on the temperament of that breed. So what is the Shephound temperament like? As we have said, Greyhound Shepherds are incredibly loving dogs, and above all else, they are loyal. Fiercely loyal, in fact. Generally, these dogs have a calm temperament, and they are usually very gentle. Especially when they are around children and small animals. But, for the most part, these dogs are lovely. Walk them regularly, and train them well when they are young, and you will have a fiercely loyal companion for the rest of their life. Ability to Train Speaking of training, you may also be wondering how easy it is to train a German Shepherd Greyhound Mix. Well, as you might expect, it is usually very easy to train a Shephound. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, and because of this, they can often pick up tricks incredibly quickly. A lot of people are surprised at how quickly Shephounds can learn commands, and people are also often surprised at how early in their lives these dogs will begin learning. From as early as 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd Greyhound mix will begin listening to their owner and learning commands. So start early with training, and you will have a very well-behaved dog. Nutritional Requirements Shephounds are very large dogs, so they do have some nutritional requirements. You should avoid feeding them grains as this can lead to GDV a bloating condition , instead you should feed them lots of protein. Make sure their diet is well-balanced with protein, vitamins, minerals, and also high in calories. Exercise Requirements The amount of exercise that your German Shepherd Greyhound mix needs will differ depending on your specific dog. Greyhounds only need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, whereas German Shepherds can need up to 2 h ours. Find a happy medium and go with the amount of exercise that suits your dog. Cost These dogs are expensive. Shephounds are also very rare, so you should expect to spend anywhere in this region for a healthy German Shepherd Greyhound mix. However, most Greyhound German Shepherd mixes are medium to large dogs with long legs and necks. They typically have short, smooth coats that can be any color, but they are most common in black and tan. They range in height from 23 to 30 inches, and they can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds. Greyhound German Shepherd Mix — Temperament The Greyhound German Shepherd mix is a friendly and intelligent breed that makes a great companion for families with children. When brushing your Shephound, be sure to use a good quality comb that can handle tangles and knots. Unlike other Greyhound mixes , they only shed their coats once or twice a year. This will help avoid any infections. This means brushing their teeth at least once a week and taking them to the vet for regular cleanings. German Shepherd chew toys can also help to keep their teeth clean. The most common health problems for this mixed breed include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, allergies, and bloat Hip and elbow dysplasia are both hereditary joint conditions that can cause pain and mobility problems in your dog. Bloat is a potentially life-threatening condition that affects the stomach. It is important to watch for signs of bloat in your dog, such as a swollen belly or pacing. If you think your dog is bloated, bring them to the vet immediately. However, some of these can be avoided by finding a responsible breeder who screens their dogs for these conditions before breeding them. Like the Greyhound Retriever mix , this mixed breed does best on a diet of dry kibble or wet food. When choosing a food for your Shephound, make sure to pick one that is high quality and made for large breeds. You will also want to avoid foods with fillers or artificial ingredients, which can cause digestive problems in your dog. Be sure to feed your Greyhound German Shepherd mix small meals per day rather than one large meal, as this can help prevent bloat and other health conditions. What kind of food is recommended? Some good options to include in their diet include: High-quality dry kibble with plenty of protein and fat Wet food that is high in protein, such as fish or beef Freeze-dried raw food, can provide a more natural diet for your dog For treats, avoid foods with lots of sugar or grains. Instead, try to find healthy options like bits of meat or veggies. You should also avoid giving your dog table scraps, as this can lead to obesity and other health problems. This mixed breed loves to run and play, so they will need an owner who can provide them with plenty of space to do so. A fenced-in yard is ideal, but not required. This breed needs at least 60 minutes of exercise per day, but more is always better. However, there are also some risks, including food poisoning, unbalanced diets and even difficulties in chewing and digesting certain raw foods. Is raw feeding better for dogs? Raw feeding is often lauded as the best option for your dog, but there seem to be just as many drawbacks as there are benefits, with you having to weigh them up depending on your individual dog and your own lifestyle. Plus… your own research! What a raw diet actually means Raw feeding often requires more care and attention given to the meal than simply opening a can, and raw diets can easily become unbalanced, lacking the nutrients found in shop-bought food if they do not contain the right amount of vegetables, supplements and organ meat. Handy Hint: I published a guide explaining what vegetables Frenchies can eat. It contains a huge list of veggies, some of which are safe, some of which could be potentially poisonous. Because of this, raw diets are best recommended to pet owners who are properly able to spend the time to properly figure out a balanced diet for their French Bulldog. Many people think it just means feeding your French Bulldog raw meat. You will need to get the 37 essential nutrients your Frenchie needs into the food, plus be able to balance out how much iron and zinc they need in their system to stay healthy. Proponents for raw feeding often cite raw feeding as the natural way, being that dogs were domesticated from wolves. However, dogs and wolves are not the same animal as they were thousands of years ago, with dogs having evolved through their domestication to adapt to what humans were feeding them. French Bulldogs, much like people, need a balanced diet to properly function. Handy Hint: If you are considering starting to put your Frenchie on a raw diet, please speak to your vet for more information. They will be able to properly recommend a raw diet plan and talk you through the pros and cons of the diet specific to your own pet. Do French bulldogs eat raw meat? Yes, French Bulldogs can eat raw meat. As many pet owners are aware, French Bulldogs will eat pretty much anything they can get their paws on. Like all dogs, you could put your French Bulldog on a raw meat diet and might even see benefits due to the lack of allergens that can arise from commercial food. But like all dogs on a raw meat diet, French Bulldogs need an equally balanced diet of meat, vegetables and other plant-based material to properly get the full range of nutrients needed for their body to healthily function. We occasionally let Claude eat a raw food diet, but most of the time his basic daily food will be kibble weighed out. French Bulldog raw diet plan So, what kind of food should you feed your French Bulldog on a raw diet? What are the benefits? And are there any drawbacks or dangers with cutting out ready-made dog food entirely? Unfortunately nobody is yet to create a French Bulldog raw diet calculator… so, as with all dogs, to ensure that your Frenchie is eating well on a raw diet you will need to make sure that you are feeding them the correct amount and with the correct ratio of meats to grains and vegetables. If your Frenchie has particular allergies to common dog food ingredients or additives, feeding them a raw diet can skirt around the worry of them eating a processed meal that contains allergens. Additionally, certain health issues can also benefit from having a raw diet read more on WebMD. You need to understand your dog and nutrition When putting your French Bulldog on a raw diet, setting out a diet plan can be very important. Different dog breeds all come in different shapes and sizes, meaning that different sizes and types of meat need to be chosen so that your Frenchie is able to eat well without any issues. French Bulldogs, because of their unfortunate history of overbreeding, can suffer from breathing and joint problems, and also are known for having numerous gastrointestinal issues and allergies. For a full list of all their health problems, click here. Because of this, extra care may have to be taken when feeding your Frenchie, catering to any allergies that they may have. Raw feeding, therefore, can actually be quite beneficial as it cuts out any additives or extra ingredients added to the recipe during manufacture that may cause an allergic reaction in your Frenchie. Raw meat, grains, vegetables and supplements are a great combination to create a fully balanced diet that provides them with all of the nutrients that they need. When feeding your French Bulldog a raw meat diet, most recommend feeding them out of a stainless-steel bowl. Stainless steel is a sterile material, meaning that bacteria cannot be easily transferred, and they are very easy to clean between meals. Your French Bulldog raw diet plan should also include elements such as fruit and vegetables. Many raw diet recipes are available online, but what is most important is that you get the right ratio of meat to grains, vegetables and other supplements. Meat: dogs can happily eat any kind of raw meat, as long as you remove the fat, the larger bones and the skin from any poultry, which can be unhealthy and even pose a choking hazard to your dog. The heart, lungs, stomach, muscle meat and intestines can all be fed to your dog. Organ meat is classified as the liver, kidneys, spleen, brain and pancreas. Vegetables: dogs are actually omnivorous, and a pure meat diet alone can cause negatives effects on their health. Vegetables that are raw to feed to your dog raw include carrots, broccoli, pumpkin, green beans and asparagus. Celery and spinach can also be included but in smaller amounts. While some dogs do suffer from grain allergies, most can eat them without a problem. Add cooked rice, pasta or other grains to their meal. Never feed your dog uncooked rice, and while some dogs do enjoy chewing on uncooked pasta be sure to keep an eye on them in case they start choking. Fruit: as well as vegetables, fruit can provide a great source of vitamins and also taste great. Fruits French Bulldogs can eat include blueberries, cranberries, goji berries, oranges , mangos, melon, bananas and apricots. Your dogs can eat apple but be sure to remove the core first as this can be toxic to dogs click here for the full list. Raw food to avoid While everyone knows that chocolate is toxic to dogs , there are in fact many different human-friendly foods that can be majorly harmful to dogs, especially when given to them raw. Fruit and veg such as avocados, grapes , onions, garlic, chives and raw potatoes are all toxic to dogs potatoes can be fed to them, but they must be baked or boiled first. Also, while dogs do love chewing on bones, they can post a choking hazard and sharp shards can cause internal injuries when swallowed. This is why I suggest you never you let your Frenchie chew on rawhide. This percentage of meat depends heavily on the age, size and energy level of your dog. It includes an easy to understand feeding chart. To figure out the portion size for your dog, speak to your vet for a good recommendation, as they will also be able to provide a good estimate for how much raw meat to feed them and inform you about the benefits and negatives of a raw food diet. What do you feed a puppy on a raw diet? Have you recently got a new French Bulldog puppy and want to get them on the same raw diet as your other dogs? Or do you simply want to see whether they will be happier and healthier on that kind of diet? Feeding a puppy a raw diet can be trickier than for adult dogs, as they have different eating habits. French bulldog raw diet benefits have still not been scientifically studied. Frenchie puppies typically need to be fed around three to four times a day, while an adult dog only needs to have two meals a day. These meals are smaller, adjusting the amount fed as they grow larger and need more energy for the amount they are burning off. If your puppy has previously been eating processed, shop-bought dog food, it is important that you transition them slowly, replacing one of their meals with a raw alternative over the course of a few days, until all of the meals they are eating are raw. This is because their digestive system needs to adapt to the new kind of food. When they are fully introduced to a raw diet, Frenchie puppies can begin to be given small, softer chews to begin to strengthen their jaw muscles to help them eat tougher meat and bones. However, as with all dogs, care should be taken as bones can pose a choking hazard. If you are interested in introducing your French Bulldog puppy to a raw diet, please speak to your vet who will be able to properly guide you through the transitioning process and suggest a tailored diet plan to your particular dog. The pros and cons of a raw food diet Health benefits of a raw diet 1. You know exactly what is in the food Commercial and processed pet food can contain additional sugars, filler ingredients, preservatives, colours and flavours that may either pose a risk to your dog or simply offer no additional benefits. Also, a French Bulldog raw diet of freshly sourced ingredients may be better in quality to that used in commercial dog food, as will not contain any additional additives to extend its shelf-life. Possible additional benefits Whilst there is no scientific evidence, fans of raw dog food diets say it can lead to healthier coats, cleaner teeth, better skin, higher levels of energy, and even smaller stools. Risks of a raw diet 1. Bacterial infections for your dog and you Untreated and raw meat can be infected with salmonella and other bacteria that can cause food poisoning in both humans and animals. Harmful bacteria from the raw meat can be released into their faeces, and people with weak immune systems can get infections even with microscopic trace contact. Choking hazards Bones can cause dogs to choke, break teeth or cause internal injuries from sharp shards inside the intestines. Unbalanced diet When people say that dogs are carnivores, many assume this means that they live off meat alone. It is important that you feed your French Bulldog a balance of meat, grains and vegetables, with an overly meat-based diet causing dogs to even get gout and uric acid stones. While a French Bulldog raw diet does consist of meat, it also needs to include fruit and vegetables, with some dairy such as raw eggs and yoghurt added in. Yes, we do let him have some raw food occasionally, but honestly, I would rather cook it first. There are pathogens in raw food that can lead to vomiting. Frenchies are renowned for being sick a lot anyway, and have very delicate stomachs. Whilst many owners will say that raw feeding is the more natural option and lauded as superior to feeding your dog human-manufactured pet foods, I am not in that camp. Unless you completely understand the basics of nutrition and understand what supplements your Frenchie needs, only feed raw food in moderation. We do not claim to be veterinarians. French Bulldogs can easily become overweight or underweight , especially the lazy ones. Some french bulldogs are hyperactive while others are couch potatoes. It is also critical that you maintain a consistent feeding schedule and never slack off on feeding your French Bulldog. Even more important than that is feeding your Frenchie the proper amount of food daily. Young Frenchies have high caloric and nutrient needs. French Bulldogs aged anywhere from weeks of age need a total of 1. Spreading out the meals minimizes the peaks of energy your French Bulldog will experience due to dramatic rises and decreases in blood sugar levels between meals. Feeding only twice daily can sometimes lead to gastric dilatation volvulus. By this stage, your French Bulldog is ready to get into an eating routine that they will continue on for the rest of their happy, little chubby lives, barring no serious medical ailments later on in life. From around 6 months to 1 year of age, you can start feeding your French Bulldog a very high quality adult doggy food. It is important to maintain a strict routine for your French Bulldog. See this guide in order to determine the appropriate weight for your Frenchie. Subject: How much should I feed my French Bulldog? Raw food is served to a dog by considering its age, weight, and health condition. Keeping all the BART diet ingredients appropriate will help your dog maintain a healthy weight. If your dog is more active and energetic, can you adjust the diet portion accordingly? It is a misconception that French Bulldogs cannot have a raw diet. Always serve raw meat and raw edible bones to your Frenchie and avoid cooked bones at any cost. Again, it is important that your dog has a healthy and nutritious diet. How to introduce a BARF diet to your dog? Most dog owners are afraid of introducing a BARF diet to their dogs. When deciding to implement a BARF diet, always begin with gradual steps. Carefully note how your French Bulldog reacts to this raw food diet. If your dog is doing well with this BARF diet, gradually increase the amounts until you achieve the recommended diet ratio. You can grind both the raw meat and the meaty bones when preparing the meal. Make sure to steam or slightly cook raw vegetables, including carrots, cucumbers, celery, green beans, pumpkin, etc. Otherwise, they will cause choking hazards. You can also add pasta, raw eggs, lentils, or rice to supplement the BARF diet. Carefully mix the appropriate percentage of all the BARF ingredients for your dog. Remember that a raw diet has little shelf life, so always prepare the food fresh and avoid storing it for a long time. It is free from preservatives providing more health benefits to your dog. It maintains oral hygiene and removes plaque and tartar. It helps to keep your dog stronger and maintain a healthy weight. It boosts immunity and energy levels in dogs. The variety of ingredients in this diet keeps your dog pleased. Your dogs will have smaller stools after using this diet. Drawbacks of a BARF diet for dogs: A raw diet has a greater risk of food poisoning in dogs due to harmful bacteria. Your dog may suffer from diarrhea when you switch to a barf diet. Dogs may experience nutritional deficiencies when feeding on a barf diet. Whole meat bones can cause choking hazards in dogs. Preparing raw food diet is expensive and time-consuming. Dogs with a weak immune system have a greater risk of getting a bacterial infection. Final thought: The barf diet has lots of benefits for your French bulldog. When you introduce a BAFF diet to your Frenchie, always remember to begin with a small amount and monitor your dog. Raw food diets are full of nutritions when it is fresh. Keep in mind that your dog may experience an upset stomach and allergies when served a BAFF diet.
